A S T H E H O L I D AY S E A S O N A P P R O A C H E D this year, I wasn’t
terribly excited…2020 had left me worn out and limping toward the finish line. And though I know we’re not supposed to admit this, I was shuffling toward Christmas with a sense of dread and a wish for it all to just go away. The thing is, though, Christmas is rather difficult to opt out of—it’s everywhere—and it’s so bright and noisy. I knew that I could just hide behind the twinkling lights and the sparkling tinsel, the upbeat Christmas songs playing on the radio, the cookie swaps, the gatherings with family and friends sharing good food and gifts, and all things bright and beautiful about the season—but I wasn’t feeling bright and beautiful in the least. Instead of letting my light shine, I felt like stocking my freezer with 117 gallons of ice cream, putting on some pants with a huge expandable waist, and hiding under the covers with my laptop so that I could binge watch holiday-themed episodes of “Snapped” and stuff my face from Thanksgiving all the way through the New Year. I was in a dark place.
DANA JORDAN
JODIE GOLAB
But then I went to the local bookstore. Even though bookstores are one of my favorite pick-me-up places, it wasn’t the magic on the shelves that brought back my shine that day. It was what I found tucked between the pages of a novel I was browsing through: a five-dollar bill and a note that read: “Merry Christmas! If you are finding this money, enjoy a coffee on me or pass the merry along to someone else. Wishing you peace and joy this holiday season!” As I read that stranger’s words, my face lit up—and not just because I now had five extra dollars. This benefactor had no idea that I had been stumbling around in the dark— that her act of kindness shone upon my malaise like a beacon leading me back to safe harbor. She had simply decided to push back against today’s impersonal-ness by offering a sign that there are kind-hearted souls who brighten this troubled world by doing generous, honorable, and selfless things. As I purchased my coffee with my newfound windfall, it occurred to me that perhaps I’d been looking for a spotlight when all I really needed was a tiny spark to remind me of humanity’s goodness. In doing so, I’d overlooked everyday kindnesses that offer countless moments of light: a smile from a passerby, a reassuring hug, a helping hand in times of trouble— small gestures of compassion and connection that not only allow people to shine a light on who they are, how they want to live, and what matters to them, but to spread their light to others as well. We all hold a magnificent gift, a light that burns bright within our own heart. The choice of what to do with that light is of course our own—perhaps we can use it, like the stranger who left a note and a gift in the pages of a book for an unsuspecting shopper, to be a shining light in a dark world. And isn’t that what this season is really all about? w

LIFE IS A GIFT … UNWRAP AND ENJOY! Giving LKN men a voice on page 46, be sure and read Mike Griffin’s story (owner of Griffin Insurance) where you’ll learn the true meaning of gratitude. 6 ways to let your
light
SHINE!
Believe in yourself first.
No one can believe in you better than you can … not even your mom! It is imperative that you like yourself and trust yourself. It is a choice and you must make it daily.
Keep a balanced life.
Let your light shine by keeping a healthy balance of mind, body, and soul. Take time to listen to what your thoughts are telling you. Likewise, listen to your body … nourish it appropriately; and go into nature to breathe in peace of spirit. To put it simply: “Eat, Pray, Love.”
FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS.
It’s easy to self-criticize and focus on what we CAN’T do—instead, focus on what you CAN do. We all have something to bring to the table. And play to those strengths when choosing a job or hobby.
See obstacles as challenges.
When you encounter things or people standing in your way, use your God-given talents to maneuver around those in a positive, problem-solving manner. Those who aren’t supportive of you do not need to be in your circle.
Be stellar at being YOU.
Always be your authentic self. Dr. Seuss perhaps said it best: “Today you are YOU, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You!”

LIZwilson LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE
LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO
CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.
on BACKGROUND AND BEING INSPIRED: I was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States when I was 3 years old. I became a naturalized citizen as a young adult and grew up in northeast Ohio in a modest household, attending both private and public schools. I earned my finance degree from Kent State University. I’ve always been inspired by successful business women around me. Having worked in a Fortune 50 company, I had the great pleasure of being surrounded by amazing women who inspired me daily. That’s actually why I’m so passionate about opening Blo. It helps me do what I’ve always loved – mentoring other women. I come from a big family and my mom was a guiding light in teaching me about work ethic and being a strong female. She has been an inspiration to me and though she passed away a few years ago, I think about her often and know she’d be so proud of my accomplishments. on LIFE’S BIG MOMENTS: When I was a teenager, my grandmother passed away unexpectedly. She and I were very close; I was actually named after her. She was such a strong (and even stern) parent figure in my life. That was the first time I realized how fragile life is and how important it is to live in the moment and ensure that every day matters. The other big event that “shocked the system” was having children. I was a young mom – in my early 20s – and I didn’t realize, of course, until they came along how fierce love can be. on PRIDE: I’m most proud of the relationship my husband and I have formed with our two adult children, who live within walking distance of us. We do a lot together and see one another almost every weekend. Our son, Rich, and his wife, Stephanie, have two wonderful boys, Bryce and Tucker (7 and 5 respectively). Daughter Jennifer and her husband Matt have a sweet 2-year-old, Quinn ... we’re very fortunate. We also have many relatives living here in Charlotte – two of my sisters in fact. So we remain close with the entire family, even those who live further away. I’m proud my family has stuck together … for me, family is everything. on THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAYTIME: I really enjoy the art of balancing work and family life. It’s always been something I’ve had to focus on throughout my entire career. Doing the things that bring you pleasure is a must. We love to boat on Lake Norman and play golf when we get a chance. We also love to travel and spend time with our children and grandchildren. When we can combine the two (travel + family), it’s even better! And the cherry on top is my job and how rewarding it is to be in a business where I get to experience playtime through others’ eyes on a daily basis—especially the smiles of teenagers whose entire appearance is transformed, to their delight, through a simple hairstyle change … how blessed am I. w

is saying "yes" dulling your sparkle? F UN COC KTA I L NA P K I NS are great
gifts and recently a friend reminded me of a set I gave her. The napkin saying was, “Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle.”
Life is full of struggles, obstacles, and life events which can extinguish our sparkle. However, when we overextend ourselves because we’ve chosen to say “yes” when we should have said “no,” we’re the one responsible for the loss of inner glitter. If you default to saying “yes” when your schedule is overwhelming, your soul is tired and your gut is screaming “no,” welcome to the world of internal incongruence. Internal incongruence is when your heart, head, and gut are not on the same page and it causes you to live and act out of alignment with the authentic you. When we are congruent – our head, heart, and gut are all in agreement that our light shines. Truth is, most of us need to go through “Commitment Rehab” before we can be internally congruent. One thing we all need to remember is when we say no, we are only saying no to one option. When we say yes, we’re saying no to many other options. Sometimes it’s tough to determine which activities and commitments deserve our time and attention. So, here’s a few filter questions to help evaluate obligation invitations:
16
DECEMBER 2020
w OMAN.COM
L AKENORMAN
Ask yourself …
Is this opportunity something I am passionate about and will gladly do whatever I need to? If the answer is yes, then commit. If there is an aspect of the assignment you dread, take a pass. What is the yes-to-stress ratio? If the short-term working late or missing bed-time goodnights stresses are worth the joy of serving, commit. If hesitant, take a pass or ask if there is a smaller role. Is my response motivated by guilt? If saying yes is only because the requestor helped you with a project, you have permission to decline. Maybe offer to do something with less responsibility. Do I have margin for the surprises? If you don’t have the time to handle the dropped balls and lastminute cancellations, take a pass. Am I the best person? Sometimes we need to say no in order to give another person an opportunity to shine.
When we know we shouldn’t commit, we have a responsibility to ourselves and the inviter to bravely, graciously, honestly, and clearly say: “No, I appreciate you asking me. The project sounds great and as much as I would like to help you, I cannot make that commitment at this time. Thank you for understanding.” This is a simple expression that works. Learning when to say yes or no is the ultimate productivity hack. If you’re used to saying yes most of the time, saying no won’t be easy. However, the better we are at simplifying our obligations, the more we find ourselves humming the old hymn, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.” w Michelle Hoverson is the author of Mentoring Moments with Myself – a collection of letters to her younger self on life, faith, love and leadership. A Little Background I grew up in a small Iowa

We have two amazing children who teach us invaluable life lessons everyday: Thomas (20) and Wesley (10). Thomas has ADHD (inattentive type) and Wesley is diagnosed with autism and ADHD (hyperactive type).

Choosing Your Path I initially wanted to become a physical therapist but after job-shadowing an occupational therapist, I was drawn to the idea of how OTs look at people as a whole and can work with all aspects of a person’s life—from babies to older adults—with everything they need to be able to do such as play, learn, socialize, transition, writing, dressing, safety awareness, mobility, sports, etc.
My Passion … My Heart I have always wanted
to work with kids and worked in the schools for more than 10 years in Illinois. While I saw students with a variety of diagnoses (Down syndrome, developmental delays, motor planning difficulties and dyspraxia, handwriting difficulties, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and more), my area of focus has been related to autism, ADHD, sensory processing difficulties, and executive functioning skills. I also provided services to children 0-3 years old through the Illinois Early Intervention Program where I saw them in their home environments and worked on fine motor skills, play skills, sensory regulation, and general skill development.
R&R Family Style I really enjoy spending time
with my family … we like to explore the area, go hiking, or just play board games at home. I love decorating for the holidays and having gatherings with friends and family. I unwind by doing yardwork and walking our precious pit bull Marley.

2 Cool Quotes This one hangs on the wall at the
clinic: “Don’t wait until you reach your goal to be proud of yourself. Be proud of every step you take.” I feel like so many people are rushing to be the first and the best with everything that they only celebrate when they see the trophy and don’t enjoy the moment and everything it takes to get there. The other quote I really relate to is by Robin Sharma, which says, “No kid is unsmart. Every kid is a genius at something. Our job is to find it and encourage it.”

Adapting to Change I am constantly growing the clinic in order to
reach more families and provide more awareness and education to people in general. I feel many parents, caregivers, and educators can be so overwhelmed with their own demanding schedules that they struggle with adapting to what a child with special needs requires to flourish. I work diligently everyday to provide more educational services geared to parents and educators and how they can be advocates for our kids and adapt during these challenging times. w WRITER LESLIE OGLE

HOLIDAY WEIGHT can weigh heavy on you!
I N M O RE “ W E I G H S ” T H AN O NE, but fear not … you got this! With the holidays, cold weather,
and yes, the pandemic, we are likely to be eating more and exercising less this holiday season, so let’s get back to the basics. Here are a few easy things you can do that make a BIG difference: Break a sweat! Try not to skip your regular exercise and, in fact, take it up a notch to combat all the extra calories. A brisk walk around the block will help relieve stress as well, especially if all that family is trying your patience!
Have daily weigh-ins. Weigh yourself twice a day instead of once. It may be painful but it will help you face your realities and perhaps keep you from that extra piece of cake.
Be mindful of holiday spirits. It’s also easy to indulge in festive alcoholic drinks over the holidays but be wary of these “evil” spirits. Not only does the alcohol add calories but often the mixers and ingredients carry their own load of sugars!
Eat small amounts. Portion control is key so use a small plate, choose wisely, and eat slowly. Also, don’t starve yourself thinking you’re saving calories for the “good stuff.” This actually accomplishes the opposite and you can end up overeating.
Take it or send it. If you are going to an event, take a healthy dish with you. If you are hosting an event, send your guests home with leftovers. You can even purchase colored cellophane wrap so a leftover plate of cookies turns into a thoughtful gift. w

AFTER DIVORCE TEN YEARS AGO, I ENDURED A PAINFUL TRIAL
I never dreamed I would have to face: I crawled, climbed, fell, and barely survived a high-conflict divorce, my own personal “valley of the shadow of death.” It was expensive in every area: emotionally, mentally, financially, and physically. Looking back now from the mountaintop, I’m thankful for the woman it made me into. Divorce is a scary, chaotic, and challenging event … no doubt about it. But there is a way for you to turn your loss into leverage, to rip off the shirt of shame and rebuild your life. Healing begins with the transforming of your mind. It begins when you decide to rise from selfpity, walk out of the victim mentality, and reemerge to thrive. Using this formula will help you not only divorce with dignity, but position yourself for an unstoppable chapter two. Here are a few steps you can start today:
24

I know your mind feels like it’s in a blender. If you want the blending to stop – and all the doubt and mania that comes with it – you’ve got to flip the switch. You have the power to control your thoughts through meditation and mind-hacking. Replaying how you got to where you are post-divorce won’t help you get to where you’re going; it actually causes deeper ruts in your brain and keeps you in the trauma. It’s time to let the past go and gain clarity by mastering your thought process. Create an environment of structure and routine to architect a plan for your future.
It takes commitment and grit to leave one life behind for a new one, no matter how healthy the change is. Once your body, mind, and soul have a proper framework to help grieve and process through your divorce, then the excitement begins! That’s when you begin to deeply learn who you are and refine your non-negotiables that serve to reinforce your freedom and healing.
Identify problematic and self-limiting patterns to get rid of shame and guilt.
Your obsessive thoughts are leading you to practice problematic habits. And you get stuck in these habits because unjustified shame that you’ve carried from your partner as well as childhood is causing you to confine yourself to selflimiting beliefs and patterns. If you’re feeling discarded, not enough, scared, lonely; it’s time to recalibrate. Those feelings are potholes that will keep you from walking forward. Design and then create a physical environment that is comfortable for you and fill it with people who will support you.
You’re the architect of your life; each small action step you take is an investment into your future. We are all learning how to be brave and vulnerable despite our wounds. What often breaks us, makes us. And none of us have to live broken or limited to the blueprint we once used to build our life. w WRITER HILARY PORTA

unclench your
From dental problems to migraines, the culprit might be controllable. 2020 HAS BEEN A YEAR OF
unprecedented changes to society’s routines, and new-found circumstances have shown up with remarkable consequences in the dental chair. When our dental practice reopened to routine care in mid-May, there was an immediate increase in phone calls of tooth soreness and sensitivity, jaw pain, facial tenderness, and migraines. But most significantly, was the high frequency of tooth fractures … and it has continued. On average, we are now seeing three to four fractures every day, and some days more! What is going on?
The most obvious answer is pandemicrelated stress and anxiety, which is leading to significant clenching and grinding. There has been national news coverage over the past couple of months citing this same phenomenon across the country. Mental health is taking a toll, and tension is being held in the jaw, often subconsciously, resulting in extreme amounts of force on the teeth. However, several other factors could also be to blame. With so many people now working from home,
26
DECEMBER 2020
awkward workstations (sofas, beds, kitchen counters) and poor posture can directly lead to increased grinding at night. Also, people tend to be more restless, not sleeping well at night due to stress, and the mental arousal translates to clenching of the jaw. Many patients are unaware that they are grinding or clenching their teeth. In many cases, it is a subconscious act that is done at night; however, many also do it during the day when they are concentrating, driving, exercising, etc. Teeth should not touch at all, unless one is actively chewing, speaking, or swallowing. With contact, the teeth signal to the brain that chewing is going to occur, and muscles of the jaw contract. If gone unchecked, this tension will build, resulting in jaw pain, neck stiffness, headaches, tooth pain, and ultimately fractures.
L K N e x p e rt
So what can be done?
Awareness is the key. Be mindful of grinding or clenching during the day and any jaw soreness, especially in the mornings. Notice posture during the workday and sleep patterns at night. Avoid chewing ice and hard candy to prevent unnecessary stress. Visit your dentist for routine cleanings and evaluation for signs of wear, sensitivity, and weakened teeth.
w OMAN.COM
L AKENORMAN
If signs of clenching and grinding are present, talk to your dentist about having a custom bite guard made—which acts as a physical barrier between the teeth to absorb and distribute pressure. In preventing direct contact of the teeth while wearing the guard, the muscles of the jaw will also remain in a more relaxed state, preventing the destructive buildup of pressure. A custom fit guard will ensure a more precise fit and better retention than any bulky “heat and wear” over-the-counter guards. The more comfortable the guard, the greater the likelihood of its wear, which is proving to be a key line of defense in dental health maintenance this year. w

OUT WITH 2020, IN with a new YOU!
IT’S NOT A SURPRISE THAT
most Americans are happy to see 2020 coming to an end—it has been one for the record books! In fact, a recent study found that nearly 70 percent of all Americans reported higher levels of general stress this year than ever before. And while we all are aware that stress can negatively affect our body, our thoughts, and our behavior, you may not know that many common skin conditions such as increased fine lines and wrinkles, acne, sagging skin, hyper-pigmentation, and enlarged pores are made worse, or triggered, by stress. So how do you push back against the effects of stress on your skin and look your best for the holidays? Of course, the tried and true remedies of getting enough rest, drinking plenty of water, and eating a healthy diet will help the appearance of your skin, but there is a technology that has been used by celebrities for years that will have you radiating a fresher, younger appearance as 2020 winds down. It’s the Sapphire 3® Oxylight® that’s available at Eterna Aesthetics. Oxylight combines the use of several effective skin rejuvenation therapies such as LED light, microdermabrasion, microcurrent, oxygen, and customizable blue, yellow, and red light-wave settings to provide immediate improvement in the tone, texture, elasticity, and appearance of your skin. All these features work together to reduce inflammation, clear toxins, and stimulate collagen growth.

WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT the “self” these days. From self-love to self-care, in these challenging times, nurturing the whole self is a lofty goal. Sure, putting yourself first sounds perfect, but for women pulled in a million directions at once, it’s nearly impossible.
I’m thinking a pep talk with Kimberly Freel, Clinical Director of Physician’s Plan Weight Loss + Wellness in Huntersville, might be the lift we could all use right now. Her passion is helping people lose weight. You could even call it her destiny.

KIMBERLY FREEL PHYSICIAN'S PLAN WEIGHT LOSS + WELLNESS
“I’ve struggled with my weight since I was 7 years old,” she says. “I understand how hard it is to live in a body that you’re not comfortable in.” Growing up in the small town of Johnson City, New York, Kimberly recalls how she felt self-conscious about her weight, despite being an outgoing, bubbly teen. “In school, I appeared self-confident,” she recalls, “and I was popular with my classmates. In reality, being 100 pounds overweight made me feel incredibly insecure with my body on the inside.” For years, she tried every fad diet that made the headlines — from slurping nothing but cabbage soup to pre-packaged food programs. They worked initially, but the results were never long-lasting. She ultimately curbed the emotional (and physical) rollercoaster of yo-yo dieting after her third daughter, Morgan (now 26), was born. She developed a healthier eating lifestyle and began an exercise plan. “Finally, within one year, I lost over 100 pounds and I’ve kept it off for over 20 years.” That was the beginning of her life-changing trajectory to change people’s lives, from the inside out—for once she reached her third year of weight loss maintenance, she decided to share her story while simultaneously helping others with their own weight and body image struggles. An assistant manager position at a local weight loss franchise in New York state jumpstarted her passion … it was

a job that morphed into a promotion several years later, and a brand new area to call home. “I had no intention of moving, but in 2001, I was offered a regional manager position in North Carolina. I opened seven offices in the Charlotte area and simply fell in love with the locale.” Kimberly flourished in her new position, and the Lake Norman area embraced her in a comforting way. “Coming from the cold temperatures of upstate New York, the mild winters and never-ending summer days were a perfect match for me,” she smiles. Another great combo? How her own weight loss and revamped lifestyle opened so many doors personally and professionally. “I gained self-esteem and achieved success beyond my expectations,” she says. “Losing weight taught me that anything is possible — if you want it badly enough.” That kind of perseverance has punctuated all aspects of her life, especially during the pandemic. A firm believer in dressing for success, she says she strictly adhered to that philosophy during the lockdown. During phase one, she explains, when she worked from home, she kept to a strict schedule of waking early, working out, and dressing as if she had a reception room full of patients. “I started the day energized and felt more productive
than if I had stayed in my jammie-pants!” And while it may seem as if Kimberly is all work and no play, she’ll be the first to tell you she is all about striking a blissful balance. “I love making people happy and offering help and support, but I’ve learned you can’t be all things to all people in order to have quality of life.” Her feel-good ways to seize the moment include dance fitness classes, strolling with her pups, Lilly and Sophie, and, most importantly, savoring the sweetest blessing in her life, her 2-year-old granddaughter, Lucy. “Each moment I have with her is so special to me. She simply owns my heart.” Professionally, her perfect work day means celebrating with patients as they achieve their goals. “It is truly so rewarding. Everyone has a shining star burning inside them. Once you find it — the sky is the limit.” Given her zest for helping her clients create their best selves, it’s not surprising Kimberly’s favorite quote is “success is by choice, not by chance.” She is a woman who wears her past struggles proudly, and inspires countless women every day.
“Being overweight was a curse and a blessing,” she says. “Feeling so insecure wasn’t easy for the first 28 years of my life. Although, I wouldn’t change a thing. Going through the journey has given me the compassion to truly relate to patients’ struggles — and to help them achieve their goals.” We think her impassioned words hearken back to another trailblazer who is a source of strength for so many — Oprah Winfrey. “She is a big influence on my life. I love how she relates to the weight loss struggle and can also be vulnerable about her own personal story.” After all, our stories make us strong — one shimmering milestone at a time. w

Sorting through old ornaments brings back so many memories. My mom has kept every ornament my brother and I have made throughout the years. It brings me joy to see all the photos and cards of my friends and family displayed together. Christmas also brings more opportunities to have a cup of hot chocolate and brings time away from school to be with my family. Giving Christmas presents is one of my favorite things about Christmas. I buy Christmas gifts throughout the year so I don’t have to scramble at the last minute. Each gift has been thoughtfully chosen, and I think that’s the best kind of gift to give. Above all, I believe it’s important to remember the reason for the season: celebrating Jesus’ birth. Mom and I bake a cake and sing happy birthday to Jesus every Christmas. However, Christmas for teens like me can be very stressful. My parents are divorced and growing up, it was draining to celebrate any holiday … especially Christmas. That part really sucked the spirit out of the season, but it’s not like

that anymore. Although I wish I could’ve always chosen who I would spend “the most wonderful time of the year” with, it wasn’t all bad. I really enjoyed the time I spent with my mom and brother, BJ. He passed away four years ago from leukemia. Christmas has been hard since BJ died. Most of my favorite memories with my brother were during Christmas. The two of us used to love exploring in the woods beside our house. There used to be a house there a long time ago, and we would spend time just walking around the woods. Once, we found an old tire and some rope and strung it over a limb of a huge oak tree. We never really attached the rope, so we couldn’t swing on it, but it looked really cool. When it would snow, BJ and I went out in the woods and looked for animal tracks. I know I’m not the only one who has had not-so-great Christmases, but I still love the season. We have tried to make new traditions and create a Christmas season that still brings us joy even though a big piece of our family is missing. My brother is always near in spirit, and I know he would want me to enjoy life. The part of Christmas that matters the most still remains. w WRITER CARLY CORRELL

what can you do if you’re allergic to the family pet? IF YO U HAVE PE TS , it’s important to keep them warm and comfortable
in these cold winter months. This often means keeping or bringing them inside more frequently. If you suffer from allergies, these symptoms are all too familiar: the runny nose and itchy, watery eyes. But how can you know if your symptoms are related to pet allergies and not some other cause? DIAGNOSIS If you have more frequent or severe allergy symptoms when your pet is indoors, there’s a good chance your pooch or kitty is the culprit. However, the only way to know for sure is to be tested by an allergist. The two most common ways of testing are skin or blood tests. Skin tests involve using a series of small plastic instruments to lightly prick the skin and introduce a variety of allergens just under the surface. In as little as 15 minutes, any allergen a patient is allergic to will cause redness, itching or swelling at the site of the injection.
42
DECEMBER 2020
Patients with particular skin conditions or who are taking some types of medications cannot undergo skin testing. For these patients, we utilize blood tests, also called ImmunoCap. A blood sample is drawn and sent to the lab, where the suspected allergen is added to the sample. Then, the sample is tested to measure how many antibodies the blood makes to fight the allergen.
w OMAN.COM
L AKENORMAN
Another form of testing, patch testing, can help identify delayed reactions. In patch testing, potential allergens are placed on the surface of the skin and covered with a bandage. In 48 hours, the bandage is removed and the skin is checked for swelling or rash.
L K N e x p e rt
Here’s an interesting fact: people with pet allergies are not only allergic to dander (pet hair). They’re often actually allergic to a certain protein in their pet’s saliva on the dander. Cats, for example, groom themselves with their tongues, creating lots of loose dander covered in saliva. It’s light and sticky, so the dander clings to clothes and shoes, spreading from place to place and person to person.
TREATMENT Avoidance is the best way to treat pet (or any other) allergies. But no one wants to banish their furry friends. Medicines such as overthe-counter nasal steroid sprays and antihistamines can alleviate symptoms. Some antihistamines can leave you feeling drowsy — so be sure to read and follow directions and use with caution until you know how your body will react. Cleaning the air inside your house with a HEPA filter can help by removing the dander from the environment, especially in enclosed spaces like a bedroom. Allergy shots (also called “immunotherapy”) are very effective and can, in time, “reset” your immune response to the protein in dander — lessening or even curing your allergies altogether! w

SHARE SOME TRAVEL TIPS AFTER A RECENT TRIP TO MIAMI
Miami is the seat of Miami-Dade County and the cultural, economic, and financial center of South Florida. The city covers an area of about 56 square miles between the Everglades to the west and Biscayne Bay to the east. Miami is the sixth most densely populated major city in the United States with a metropolitan area that is home to 6.1 million people, the secondmost populous in the southeastern United States and the seventhlargest in the nation. The city has the third tallest skyline in the U.S. with over 300 high-rises, 55 of which exceed 490 feet.

Staying in the Kimpton EPIC Hotel will put you right in the heart of Miami with views of the stunningly beautiful Miami skyline and Biscayne Bay. We found the hotel to be beyond friendly and accommodating, especially with guest safety in mind. Hand-sanitizing stations were everywhere, and smiling hotel personnel always had the door open for you—touchless everything. We were treated like celebrities and standard rooms are super-affordable, especially during the off-season (summer). Our precious dog, Jack, was also famously treated with an adorable “Doggie Bag” that included a toy, a ball, a handy portable dog bowl, some baggies for our walks, and a doggie-bone treat to boot! Everywhere in the hotel is exquisite—the restaurants, the pool, the gym, the spa. The views are so spectacular, we stayed entertained for hours on our balcony sipping wine and watching the city; but having a burger and a margarita while lounging in a cabana on the rooftop pool was worth leaving the room for! www.epichotel.com will not disappoint! Area 31 at the Kimpton EPIC Miami hotel has panoramic views of the amazing Miami skyline and Biscayne Bay from the 16th floor. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR CAREER?
I grew up and went to grade school in Statesville, later attending Elon University, Mitchell College, and UNCC majoring in accounting and minoring in business administration. I began my insurance career in 1978 and it wasn’t until about two years later that I decided this was a great business. My dad was an HVAC contractor and was inspirational in showing me how to run your own business. I remember him going out on his own when I was about 10, and the marketing approach he used to let people know he was starting his own business made a lasting impact on me. CHANGES IN LATITUDE, CHANGES IN ATTITUDE
Growing up in Statesville, I remember Lake Norman being built, so it was inevitable that I developed a love for the water—particularly through boating and water skiing. I also love to travel and play golf … both allow me to unwind and get away from the everyday stress of running a business. My wife, Cindy, and I have been fortunate to travel several times a year. Our favorite places include the islands in the Caribbean and many European countries. One of our most memorable trips was a tour of Spain and Portugal. KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE
MIKE GRIFFIN, GRIFFIN INSURANCE
I grew up playing sports and developed a quiet, yet very competitive, nature. I have always wanted to compete at the highest level of my ability and am willing to do what it takes to get better. This carries over to everything in life, both personal and business. I still play competitive softball and have probably played over 2,500 games since I started in my early 20s. In 2011, I was named to the ASA All-American Team for ages 55 and older.
SPOILER ALERT: Men and women are different. Ok, so maybe that fact didn’t really surprise you. After all, it’s been 27 years since John Gray popularized the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. And as much as we love sharing women’s stories, we decided it was time to lend the Martians of LKN our ear, too. This month we share the perspective of Mike Griffin, owner of Griffin Insurance in Mooresville.
FAMILY TIES
I’m very proud of my family and my marriage … Cindy and I have a great relationship! And from that we have three incredible kids: Rob and two daughters, Meredyth and Courtney. My work family is amazing as well! I took over a very small insurance agency when I started and with the help of some very good employees, we grew it to one of the ten largest agencies within the Nationwide Insurance group of companies. In 2011, we were named to their Sales Hall of Fame, a small group consisting of only 52 agencies in their 91 year history.

MIND body spirit By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nur ture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.
THE GREATEST WEAPON AGAINST STRESS?
OUR ABILITY TO CHOOSE OUR THOUGHTS! I know you feel you can’t control it. The thoughts, feelings, emotions tumbling in your mind—like dirty rags in a washing machine… around and around and around. Perhaps your brain feels overwhelmed and it keeps you up at night. I bet your last few months have held a lot of sleepless nights, racing thoughts, and lack of focus. I bet you’ve lost weight, or gained weight, or don’t even recognize yourself. Maybe you feel like there’s nothing you can do to heal your pain, fix your wounds, and clear your mind. I’ve been there. I know how it feels. The anxiety you feel is your physiological response to stress. It’s your body and mind going into survival mode. Physiologically speaking, this is the way your body and mind try to protect you from danger. But when anxiety floods the mind with toxic thoughts and fear, you can go from survival mode to complete chaos. Here are a few tips to reduce your anxiety:
QUESTION YOUR THOUGHT PATTERN. Our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things like events and environment. In response to stress, negative thought patterns can take root in your mind and distort your perception of reality. One way to regain your sense of calm is to challenge your fears and take back control of your thought patterns. Positive thoughts only!
COUNTERACT WORRY WITH PRESENCE. When we spend too much time outside of the present moment, we can get depressed and anxious … literally filled with fear. By focusing our attention on the present moment, we counteract rumination and worry. When you find a quiet space to think
and focus on the present, you come into an awareness of your emotions and create more adaptive reactions to stressful situations. You can train the brain to bring attention to the present moment so you can more clearly process through emotions.
DIRECT COMPASSIONATE THOUGHTS TOWARDS YOURSELF. Your worth is not determined by your ability to handle stress or your response to stressful situations; it comes from within. You are worthy because you say you’re say you’re worthy and say because you believe it. Make selfpraise familiar. Become a champion for yourself. When you notice feelings of anxiety, reassure yourself by saying reaffirming and true statements like, “I am strong. I am capable. I am enough.” w
