ANYONE WHO KNOWS MY FAMILY KNOWS ONE THING: we love stories. And oh, do we have some gems. One of my alltime favorites comes from a Christmas long ago, when a neighbor’s hunting dogs met an untimely and tragic end. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “What kind of monster would laugh about this?” I promise, we’re not heartless! But the owners’ response—a series of handwritten roadside signs—was a masterclass in grief management, small-town drama, and seasonal irony. The pièce de résistance? A sign that boldly declared: “Merry Whatever!!!!”

To this day, my family has wholeheartedly embraced "Merry Whatever" as our unofficial holiday slogan. When the Christmas cookies burn, the tree falls over (again), or someone buys one of us a self-help book we didn’t ask for, we just shrug and say, “Merry Whatever.” It’s become a way to laugh through the tears, lighten the tension, and remind ourselves that even in the middle of life’s biggest messes, there’s room for a little humor. If the grieving dog owners could use humor to spread their message on a country road, surely the rest of us can channel that same energy when our turkeys are dry, our presents are late, or Aunt Betty starts a political debate at dinner.

LKNw TEAM

Let’s face it, the holidays aren’t always Hallmarkperfect. Maybe you’re grieving a loved one, managing a mountain of boxes during a move, or dealing with the triple threat of flu season, no Wi-Fi, and a broken coffee maker. Or maybe, like so many of us, you’re simply trying to survive another season without a parent, a spouse, or a child. Whatever your story, you are not alone. Life can be messy and maddening, but in that chaos, we often find the moments that make us laugh, bond, and remember what truly matters.

So this holiday season, when life inevitably goes sideways, I invite you to join me in the mantra of #MerryWhatever. Let’s toast to the hiccups, heartbreaks, and hilarity of it all. After all, the holidays are less about perfection and more about the beautifully imperfect stories we collect along the way.

Here’s to embracing the chaos with humor and heart. Merry Whatever, friends. W

LIVE, LEARN,

Life takes practice! And though they don’t always come wrapped in a shiny red bow, the lessons we learn along the way are invaluable gifts that are worth sharing. Here are a few noteworthy examples featured in this issue:

TRUST THE PROCESS

“So

let go my soul and

trust

in Him. The

waves and wind still know His name. And through it all, through it all, my eyes are on You, and it is well with me.” Skip on over to PAGE 14 to see why these song lyrics resonate with Dr. Sheila García Santana with Graystone Eye. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Dr. Garcia credits her parents with instilling in her early on the importance of education, career, and caring for others.

... AND THE JOY OF THE SEASON CAME SHINING THROUGH

Be sure to check out our cover story on PAGE 32 where we catch up with smile-maker Dr. Julianne Colvin of Crawford & Colvin Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Huntersville. Dr. Colvin has been making people smile for many years now, beginning with a dental mission trip to Guatemala where she solidi ed her calling and career. “I was able to serve a physical need while giving more from my heart—a demonstration of God’s grace through compassion, gentleness, and a desire to meet others where they are.”

HOLIDAY SEASON OF GIVING, SUPPORT, AND INSPIRATION

Discover the true essence of the holiday season in our special section, Unwrapping Hope, on PAGE 18. Proudly presented by our sponsor, Reach Fertility, this thoughtful feature includes meaningful gift ideas, inspiring stories of local charities making a profound impact in our communities, and informational articles about infertility to provide support and awareness.

SPREADING LOVE, HEALTH, AND WELLBEING

Don’t miss the inspiring story on PAGE 50 where we introduce you to Rachel Pritchard, co-founder of CODA Wellness in Davidson. Along with her sisters, Xhenis Levack Smith and Stephenie Backes, she strives to build trust and empower clients on their health journeys.

“From the moment you walk through our doors,” she smiles, “the inviting atmosphere makes you feel grounded and welcomed—reflecting our dedication to creating a supportive place where clients feel heard and valued.” W

Sheila GARCÍA SANTANA

on FAMILY, HOME, AND HAPPINESS: I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. My mother is a teacher, and my father was an economy major working as a social security clerk. They were both the first generations in their families to attend college. My parents instilled in me from an early age the importance of education and building a career. I decided to stay in Puerto Rico for college and medical school due to academic scholarships. Afterwards, I moved to Boston where I did my ophthalmology residency at Boston University and then a two-year surgical retina fellowship at Yale University. Around that time, I met my husband, but we remained long-distance for five years due to our respective training. We are celebrating our ten-year wedding anniversary this year and we have two children ages 7 and 1.

Dr. Sheila García Santana specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous. A part of the surgical team at Graystone Eye (2424 Century Place SE in Hickory), you can reach Dr. Garcia at 828.304.6611 or connect with her online via graystone-eye.com. f

GRAYSTONE EYE

on BEING WRITTEN IN THE STARS: I had many interests during college unrelated to medicine including Spanish literature, math, physics, philosophy, and dance. I always excelled academically in the natural sciences and the decision to go into medicine was practical at the time. What I knew for certain is that I wanted a career that gave me a sense of purpose. I developed a passion for ophthalmology after assisting a retinal detachment repair as a medical student. The waving retina is reminiscent of the aurora borealis, and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I am lucky that I enjoy my work, and I am forever grateful.

on A CLEAR PERSPECTIVE: Vision is a precious thing that many of us take for granted, but we depend on good vision for work and independence. Restoring sight to someone who is facing the threat of blindness is very gratifying. The most challenging part of practicing medicine is not being able to provide timely care because of insurance limitations or other factors.

on KEEPING PLATES IN THE AIR: I don’t think there is such a thing as work-life balance but rather a juggling act. Sometimes you lean more in one direction than the other depending on where you are needed. I try to be deliberate and mindful with my time both at work and home. I give myself grace when I need to say no to things, when I can’t always be present, and when I’m late because I was needed elsewhere. Many times, it’s the people around us, like our life partners, who make juggling possible.

on WORDS THAT RESONATE: “So let go my soul and trust in Him. The waves and wind still know His name. And through it all, through it all, my eyes are on You, and it is well with me.” These song lyrics resonate with me because good things take time, and sometimes you just need to trust the process. W

RECONNECTING WITH LOVED ONES

A REMINDER OF THE GIFTS THIS SEASON

This season, unwrapping hope could mean reconnecting with those we love. Amid our busy schedules and the swirl of holiday preparations, making time for honest conversations, laughter, and shared experiences can be the greatest gift of all. Reach out to friends or family members you haven’t seen in a while, check in on neighbors, or simply make a little extra time for those close to you. Connection brings hope, reminding us that we’re not alone on this journey.

AS THE HOLIDAY SEASON APPROACHES, thoughts often turn to gift-giving, festive meals, and family traditions. But there's something deeper we all long to unwrap during this time of year: hope. Hope gives us strength to face life’s challenges, faith in brighter days, and courage to believe that change is possible. Although they may not come with a shiny red bow, consider these heart-felt gifts of hope:

GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITIES

Volunteering can be an uplifting way to spread hope. Whether it’s serving meals at a shelter, gathering donations, or visiting a nursing home, many people find that acts of kindness and compassion become their own source of inspiration— lighting a fire of optimism and gratitude that can carry us through the year. The holidays offer a chance to amplify this spirit of giving, reminding us that hope often grows when we lift up those around us.

REFLECTION AND RENEWAL

Many of us go through the year moving from task to task, rarely stopping to think about what truly matters. The holiday season offers a unique moment to slow down, savor, and reflect on the past year. What brought you joy? What challenges did you overcome? What are you grateful for? Setting aside time for gratitude or journaling can help us focus on the good that exists in our lives, helping to cultivate a sense of hope and direction as we look forward. W

Sooner Is Almost Always Better:

Understanding the root cause of fertility challenges is the first step toward a successful outcome. By seeing a fertility specialist early, you can receive a comprehensive evaluation that may identify underlying issues such as hormonal imbalances, structural problems, or genetic conditions. Early diagnosis allows for timely intervention, increasing your chances of conceiving naturally or with assisted reproductive technologies (ART).

Age Matters:

Understanding f ty Challenges

MAKING THE DECISION TO START OR GROW your family should be a wonderful time of your life. However, having a baby isn’t always as easy as it might seem and when things don’t go as planned, you may nd yourself in need of fertility help.

One in six couples in the U.S. has di culty conceiving so you certainly are not alone. Fertility treatment can be a deeply personal and complex journey and while there’s no one-size- ts-all answer to fertility challenges, here are some things to consider when deciding if you should seek the help of a fertility expert:

SPONSORED & PROVIDED BY:

DR. SETH KATZ | REACH FERTILITY

Dr. Seth Katz is a reproductive endocrinologist and the medical director at Reach Fertility. He has been treating fertility patients in the Carolinas for more than 15 years. Consistently recognized by his peers as a “Top Doctor,” he proudly leads the team at Reach Fertility offering their patients compassionate care and the most advanced reproductive technologies. Reach Fertility has 10 fertility specialists and three area locations: Charlotte, Ballantyne, and Lake Norman. Learn more at www.reachfertility.com or call 704.343.4444.

Age is a significant factor in fertility, particularly for women. As women age, the quantity and quality of their eggs decline, making it harder to conceive. For women under 35 it is reasonable to try to conceive 6-12 months before seeking fertility help; for women over 35, sooner is better. For men, age can also affect sperm quality, and early intervention can help address potential issues.

Affordability:

Delaying a visit to a fertility specialist can lead to more complex and costly treatments down the line. Early intervention often means simpler, less invasive treatments, which can be more cost-effective in the long run. Additionally, understanding your insurance coverage and financial options early on can help you plan and manage the costs associated with fertility treatments.

Advanced Technologies and Innovations:

Fertility treatments have come a long way, and staying informed about the latest advancements is crucial. Fertility specialists are at the forefront of these innovations, from genetic testing to cutting-edge ART techniques. By consulting a specialist early, you can take advantage of the latest technologies that may improve your chances of success.

Fertility Timeline:

Elective egg freezing is a way for a woman to take control of her own fertility timeline. This kind of preservation will allow time to cultivate a meaningful relationship, pursue education goals, or devote extra time to a business or career. Preservation options also exist for male and female cancer patients who wish to preserve eggs, embryos, or sperm in advance of oncology treatments. W

Identify, Label, and Honor Your Feelings

HOPE UNWRAPPING

Your fertility journey is full of emotions. It is important to identify and label those feelings and what is causing you to feel that way. It is okay to take time to cry and express your sadness. Holding your feelings inside actually takes more mental energy than releasing them. Give yourself permission to feel whatever emotions are triggered and accept that this is exactly the place where you need to be—in the present moment.

Seek Childfree Forms of Celebration

d INFERTILITY Managing Holiday Stress

If family events are too painful, skip them and plan activities for you and your partner. Trips out of town or even a “micro-adventure” to a local hotel allow you to celebrate and explore something new together.

Take a Break

THE HOLIDAYS – a time of year filled with cheer, shopping, cooking, and attending gatherings. However, for those struggling with infertility, this season can also intensify the daily reminders of that struggle. Family tensions, awkward questions, and travel may have you considering staying home this year - and that’s totally fine too! But, if you want to be part of the gatherings, here are some tips for handling stressful situations:

Give to Those in Need

Spread some cheer to others in your community. Visit an elderly relative or volunteer at a local hospital, nursing home, or homeless shelter. Bringing a smile to the faces of others with holiday blues can have a gratifying effect.

If you are scheduled to undergo fertility treatment over the holiday season, it might be worth placing on hold until things are less stressful and busy. A small break does not negatively impact the success of the treatment and can even provide a much-needed emotional break.

Give Yourself Permission to Say “No” to Invitations

It is okay to be selective with events you choose to attend this season. You may not feel comfortable around too many babies, children, and pregnant women. You may not want to have to field questions about your own fertility. Your close family and friends will understand. If you have an event that you MUST attend, make a plan for a “safety net.” Enlist your partner or a friend to stay by your side to help navigate painful conversations, to provide a supportive shoulder, or to give you a break to talk freely during the event. ThereHope IS

WE HAVE ENDURED A CONTENTIOUS political season. If we were to believe all the advertisements and rhetoric, one might feel a bit overwhelmed and hopeless. Many of us are exhausted with all the work needed to unite our country, counties, and communities from societal pain and strife.

But guess what? ere IS hope, and there are champions out there working to solve problems every day. Our country has a strong charitable sector dating back to the mid-1600s. People who have worked together for the greater good of others jump into action when the need arises. ey provide vision, action, volunteers, and critical dollars.

Charitable people are ordinary men and women who stay the course and understand how to solve problems rather than create more. People of every color and from various backgrounds unite to help our neighbors who are going through devastating experiences. ey are administering aid to those who need a helping hand to gain footing and get back to living a life that is meaningful and fruitful.

During this holiday season, you may be thinking about how you and your family can work through charable organizations to o er hope. Here are some things to help guide you:

• Decide whether you want to have influence on a national or local level.

• What are you enthusiastic about? What group of people do you want to offer hope to?

• Consider giving a holiday gift to an organization with a mission that aligns with your values. Think about giving a gift in honor or in memory of a person who taught you the importance of giving and sharing.

• Do you want to have influence after you are gone? Consider leaving a legacy gift that is dispersed from your estate. Hint, let the charitable organization know so they can understand your deep commitment to their work.

e election might have drained us, but Americans can unite and solve societal problems through giving, loving, and sharing. ere is hope and our charitable sector is leading the way. Go forth and do what you can this holiday season and help spread the hope and the love that makes America great! W

That’s why I’m excited to invite you to join our Closet Cleanup Chaenge! This is an opportunity to decluer your space and make a meaningful di erence in our community by donating items to a chosen local charity.

Whether you’re motivated by the promise of a well-organized closet or the chance to give back to our community, I hope you’ll join us in this challenge. W

YOUR CLOSET CLEANUP CHECKLIST

To make this challenge easy and rewarding, we’ve put together a stepby-step checklist. I recommend tackling one category at a time, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Remember, the goal is to make your space functional, inspiring, and efficient.

WHY TAKE THE CLOSET CLEANUP CHALLENGE?

We all accumulate clothing, accessories, and “just in case” items that end up hiding in the corners of our closets. is challenge is designed to help you clear out what you no longer need, creating space for what truly matters while giving back. By donating gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories, you’ll directly impact those in need and contribute to the positive ripple e ects of generosity.

1. ASSESS & CATEGORIZE: Begin by sorting everything in your closet into three main categories: Keep, Donate, and Discard. Remember, if you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s probably time to let it go.

2. EVALUATE SEASONAL ITEMS: Pack away out-of-season items in labeled containers, freeing up space for what you’ll wear daily.

3. ORGANIZE BY TYPE & COLOR: Place items you use most frequently at eye level. Color-coding can help create a visually pleasing flow, making it easier to find what you need.

4. USE STORAGE SOLUTIONS: Incorporate bins, hooks, and dividers to maximize space and keep smaller items, like accessories or scarves, organized.

5. BAG UP DONATIONS: Once you’ve filled your donation bags, take a moment to reflect on the difference you’re making in someone else’s life.

Here are some wonderful charities in the Lake Norman area that accept clothing donations and could benefit from your generosity this holiday season:

“BE THE REASON SOMEONE SMILES TODAY” has become a popular expression. From social media to meaningful memes, clearly it resonates with the masses. You could say Dr. Julianne Colvin (Crawford & Colvin Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Huntersville) is credited with the a able advice ... she certainly learned to implement it early in her career, but it has evolved into her mission in life. Her love, care, and service for others has now spanned nearly 20 years in dentistry rooted in a dental school mission trip to Guatemala where she quickly became the reason many were smiling.

“ at trip gave me clarity of purpose early on,” Dr. Colvin shares. “I was able to serve a physical need while giving more from my heart—compassion, gentleness, and a desire to meet others where they are. To understand the person behind a problem and make a di erence is life changing ... to see the potential for a healthy, genuine smile that re ects more than just their teeth. A passion for serving others became the motivation for my career.”

After completing dental school at West Virginia University, Dr. Colvin desired to expand her skills and expertise and was accepted into the competitive Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at UNC-Chapel Hill. She not only gained valuable experience in implant dentistry, complex cosmetic cases, and practice management, but also realized how much she loved living in North Carolina. She and her husband, Jason, were married following her residency and relocated to Huntersville, where she joined a private practice as an associate dentist and discovered ways to become involved in her community.

Professionally, she joined the local chapter of the Seattle Study Club, a dedicated community of dental professionals who collaborate to learn and provide the best care for their patients. She regularly volunteered with community clinics, such as Mission of Mercy and e Dental Bus through the Ada Jenkins center, which provide free dental care for underserved populations in the community. “Having the ability to make a di erence for someone in a tangible, comforting way, often moves me to tears,” she explains. “Lives are changed when we lead with empathy and compassion.”

Although Dr. Colvin knew her career was in dentistry, music had always played a foundational role throughout her life. As a member of Lake Norman Baptist Church at that time, she joined the

worship team on the piano and keys ... serving nearly every Sunday for 11 years until the Covid pandemic a ected the ability to gather.

“I am a fairly accomplished piano player,” Dr. Colvin says sheepishly. “I was focusing on dentistry as a career, but I wanted to continue to nd ways to serve in all areas of my life. Music is transcendent and healing, and having the opportunity to lead music at women’s retreats and weekly services was such a gift. e connections I made with others during that time continue to be blessings in my life.”

As her experience in dentistry grew, so did her desire for ownership. In 2012, Dr. Colvin was presented with the opportunity to partner with a colleague, Dr. Brent Crawford, who she had known in the community for many years. Sharing the same vision for dentistry, it was the perfect t. eir common goal to have an o ce centered on service and creating an experience that surpassed great dentistry alone came to fruition. “We wanted a comfortable, inviting atmosphere,” she explains, “where patients felt more like family and knew their best interest would always be top priority.”

Over the years, Crawford & Colvin Dentistry has become a pillar of exemplary care and service in Huntersville and the surrounding areas. eir o ce enjoys serving collectively in community events such as Team Smile and Mission of Mercy—nonpro t organizations that provide free dental care to those in need. Annually, they also partner with the Wounded Warrior organization to sponsor candy buy-backs and give donations to e orts overseas. ey sponsor local youth sports and school fundraisers and have organized holiday angel tree drives and hurricane relief e orts.

“Our team members are not only experts in their eld,” Dr. Colvin adds, “but are among the most generous, caring individuals one will ever meet. We love serving together in the community but truly feel our biggest impact is in the daily care of our patients. Dentistry is scary for many people, and being able to earn their trust through compassion and seeing the turnaround from fear to appreciation is why we do what we do. ese patients

With Dr. Colvin and Jason both being business owners that give back to the community, their two sons, Tyler (14) and Carson (11), are learning from their parents’ example. e Colvins strive to instill in them a sense of sel essness and perspective that helps them see beyond themselves. “It’s about developing a heart that values and appreciates di erent walks of life,” she continues, “and nding humility and a sense of purpose that will empower them to become thoughtful and caring leaders.”

,As she reflects on her 20 years of dental service, Dr. Colvin realizes her favorite part has been the people. ,

As she re ects on her 20 years of dental service, Dr. Colvin realizes her favorite part has been the people. Dentistry has been a beautiful and reciprocal path of connection, compassion, and generosity for Dr. Colvin: “Having the opportunity to be smile-makers reaches far beyond our abilities as dental professionals. True success is measured through the creation of joy, hope, and smiles in the lives of those around us.” W

5 THINGS YOU SHOULD BE DOING

1

Get involved with the family finances. Understanding the costs of maintaining the household is important but that is not enough. I speak publicly on this topic almost monthly because it is so critical. As women, we can nd ourselves in very vulnerable situations when divorce, illness, or death of a spouse hits. If you are not well-versed in what you earn, owe, spend, and save as a couple, it can feel impossible to pick up the pieces and successfully navigate through a crisis.

5

IN TERMS OF FINANCIAL SUCCESS, it is important for women to understand that we face unique challenges. Not only do we live longer on average than our male counterparts, but with nearly 50 percent of all marriages ending in divorce,* women need to remain nimble should their life situation suddenly change. Following are five tips that will give you more financial power:

2

3

Create a spending plan.

I like to think about earning, saving, spending, and giving as a plan rather than as a budget. Many people don’t like to be on a budget but, as with many other areas of our lives, we are more likely to reach our nancial goals if we have a plan as compared to being unintentional.

Understand your credit situation.

I don’t encourage credit card debt over long terms, but it is important to have access to borrowing should the need arise. Some married couples that share credit cards nd that the borrowing application/ approval is just on one spouse. e other spouse may simply be an authorized user. Establish your own credit history and borrowing capacity by having investments or loans in your name and a personal credit card that you pay o each month.

ARE YOU 60 OR OLDER?

Have you noticed a deterioration in your short-term memory? Do you forget important appointments or frequently lose items? Cognitive function peaks around the age of 30 ... from there it is a slow, steady decline that could eventually lead to dementia or Alzheimer's. But fear not! Hyperbaric Oxygen erapy (HBOT) can help. HBOT is a medical treatment administered in a chamber in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen under pressure. is treatment produces up to a 15-fold increase in blood oxygen concentration causing oxygen to di use into every cell in the body. is stimulates healing in all tissue, including the brain. It is an extremely safe, non-invasive, and painless therapy. Here is some more information on how HBOT helps our aging minds and body:

Rr Your Aging Mind and Body

BODY TISSUE'S LACK OF OXYGEN

To quote HBOT researcher and expert, Dr. Efrati: “The occlusion of small blood vessels (atherosclerosis), like the occlusions which may develop in the pipes of an aging home, is a dominant element in the human aging process. We found that HBOT induced a significant increase in brain blood flow, which correlated with cognitive improvement. We can conjecture that similar beneficial effects of HBOT can be induced in other organs of the aging body.” HBOT addresses this by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) to re-establish blood fl ow to the tissue not getting enough oxygen—in the same way it stimulates new blood vessel growth to repair non-healing diabetic wounds.

STEM CELL EXHAUSTION

As we go through life, tissue and organs become damaged. Stem cells are produced by our body to repair that damaged tissue. The regenerative process is much more efficient in young people because of higher numbers and more efficient stem cells. As we age, the number of stem cells decreases along with their function because of mitochondrial dysfunction. Aging is also a failure to regenerate the damage due to a decrease in the number of stem cells. HBOT induces stem cell mobilization from the bone marrow to the blood stream at up to an 8-fold increase and induces the differentiation of stem cells to the various tissues such as heart, muscle, kidney, and brain to aid in their repair.

TELOMERE LENGTHENING AND DECREASE IN SENESCENT CELLS

As we age, the caps on the ends of the chromosomes shorten. This has been considered the holy grail of the biology of aging. Senescent cells are old malfunctioning cells that harm the body. In 2020, Dr. Efrati’s group released a peer-reviewed study that showed for the first time that telomere length could be increased by over 20 percent and senescent cells decreased up to 37 percent. Their protocol consisted of 60 HBOT treatments, 5 days per week, for 12 weeks. Patients following this protocol report improvement in short-term memory, attention, information processing speed, and executive functions. W

GIFTS FROM THE HEART: F LAVORS OF THE SEASON

WHETHER YOU’RE PREPPING TO GO TO A neighbor’s holiday party, making something special for the office crew, or you’re just in need of some creative gift-giving ideas, these tasty recipes are simple and make for heartfelt, meaningful gifts ... embracing the joy and flavors of the season!

CANDIED PECANS

You will need 2 cups pecan halves (walnuts or cashews work well, too); 6 tablespoons brown sugar; 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon; 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt; 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract; 1 ½ tablespoons water; 2 teaspoons orange zest, optional; pinch cayenne pepper, optional. Simply combine sugar with spices, vanilla extract, and a little water in a skillet. Heat everything until it looks like a glaze, and then stir in the nuts. Continue to stir the nuts around the glaze for a few minutes then put on a baking sheet to cool—about 10-15 minutes.

WREATH PIZZA

Preheat oven to 475. Roll out pizza dough on a floured surface to form a large circle. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and spread pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce and arrange halved mozzarella balls and cherry tomatoes around the edges of the pizza, creating a wreath shape. Add festive toppings like pepperoni or basil to resemble holly leaves and berries. Drizzle a little olive oil over the top and bake in a preheated oven for 12-15 minutes.

CUCKOO FOR COCONUT

Preheat oven to 325. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine one 14 oz bag sweetened coconut flakes; 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips; 2/3 cup chopped almonds; and one 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk. Scoop out dough (large, heaping tablespoon) onto prepared baking sheet and flatten just a bit with your thumb. Bake cookies for 12 to 14 minutes or until tips of coconut are just starting to brown. A Smile Goes A Long Way!

UNDERSTANDING DENTAL HEALTH

WHAT IS THE GREATEST RISK TO ORAL HEALTH?

ere are several major risks to oral health. Of course, cavities are caused by acidic bacteria from the breakdown of sugar in the diet. Sugary drinks consumed throughout the day pose the greatest risk (gum disease that can lead to bone loss). ere is a strong genetic component to gum health as well, but smoking, medications, and lack of hygiene contribute to the severity. Dental wear from clenching and grinding (often brought on by stress) causes cracked and broken teeth. is can lead to the need for root canals, crowns, and tooth extractions.

MAINTAINING GOOD DENTAL HEALTH IS ESSENTIAL not only for a bright smile but also for overall health and wellbeing. Plus, it affects your mood and attitude! With the massive expansion of dental treatments over the past several years, it is imperative to trust your dental team and understand some of the basics. This article explores fundamental dental care, the popular trend of teeth whitening, the connection between dental health and sleep apnea, and various oral health risks.

?

WHAT IS THE BEST FORM OF DENTAL WHITENING?

ere are two main types of whitening. First is in-o ce whitening that can increase brightness quickly with a series of bleach gel sessions under a UV light. e bene t of in-o ce whitening is that patients will reach their maximum whiteness quickly, and this choice is great in preparation for special occasions. Secondly, at-home bleaching allows patients to bene t from the time and dose dependency of the bleach. is usually consists of clear bleach trays in which professional bleach gel is applied. e trays are reusable, enabling patients to “touchup” bleach over time. Dental whitening does not damage or weaken the teeth, but it may cause increased sensitivity.

RACHEL PRITCHARD, MSN, FNP-BC, and co-founder of CODA Weness in Davidson, embodies compassion, ambition, and dedication to holistic health. Growing up in Ortone, Michigan, she began her career as a nursing assistant in her home state, working her way up through multiple roles. Each position she held gave her invaluable hands-on experience, and she has carried those principles and lessons with her.

“I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Oakland University,” Rachel shares. “And from 2008 to 2014, I served as a registered nurse in an oncology unit where I gained a profound appreciation for the patientcaregiver relationship.” Motivated to expand her impact, Rachel completed her MSN at the University of Michigan and moved to North Carolina to work in family practice, where she spent the next decade deepening her commitment to patient wellness.

Co-founding CODA Wellness gave Rachel an opportunity to create a space for transformative care, o ering therapies such as hormone replacement therapy, weight

loss programs, IV infusions, and anti-aging treatments. “My clients’ dedication to improving their health and wellbeing,” she says, “has been a great inspiration—motivating me to build CODA as a place where clients can achieve lasting health transformations.”

Rachel is married to her husband, Chris, and they share two daughters: Fiona and Sydney. In establishing CODA Wellness, her sisters, Xhenis Levack Smith and Stephenie Backes, have been instrumental co-founders. eir shared vision and teamwork have shaped CODA into a community-oriented wellness space, supporting the business's growth and success.

“Each day,” she explains, “we strive to build trust and empower clients on their health journeys. From the moment you walk through the door, the inviting atmosphere of CODA is designed to make you feel grounded, welcomed, and as if you’re in a warm home rather than a clinical healthcare environment. is approach re ects our dedication to creating a supportive place where clients feel heard and valued.”

In addition to nature walks and tending to her garden, Rachel is an adventurer at heart. She and her family are currently converting a Sprinter van into a camper, complete with solar panels, a stargazing tent, as well as an art area for the kids. ey're planning a July 2025 trip to Michigan where they’ll explore, connect, and create lasting family memories—a re ection of Rachel’s values of connection, purpose, and joy in life’s simple moments. WORDS matter

We know how busy life can get—kids, work, family, friends … sometimes just getting dinner on the table is a Herculean feat! So in an effort to save our readers some time, effort, and money here are a few tips, tricks, and hacks that might come in handy in your busy world!

RIMMING THE GLASS

Rimming your cocktail glasses is a fun way to add something extra special to your holiday parties. Cover a small plate with honey and dip the rim into the honey. en you can get creative and add garnishes such as herbs, coconut, chocolate akes, or crushed peppermint.

MOCKTAILS

THAT’S MY JAM

TIPS, & HACKS

Don’t need hops n’ barley to throw a little party! Instead of alcohol, try these ingredients to give your mocktails an extra zing and layers of avor: warm spices like ginger, cinnamon, or cardamom (which has a piney, fruity, and almost menthollike avor); orals such as elder ower, rose, lilac, and chamomile; heat (hot peppers); herbs (fresh thyme, sage, rosemary, cilantro).

Add fresh fruit such as lemons, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, or limes which will then create a new avor once they’ve melted in the cocktail. Herbs such as rosemary, mint, sage, and thyme are great ice cube options.

EDITION Christmas Spirits

With this hack, you get the best of both worlds: you get fruit avor and a sweetener, all at a low cost. You won’t need to make your own simple syrup if you use jam or preserves. Just make sure you get the right avor of jam for speci c cocktails. Mixologists recommend apricot jam with whiskey, and raspberry jam pairs well with vodka.

For extra cheer at your holiday party, shake things up with this easy cocktail. Simply pour 1 ounce vodka, 1 ounce amaretto, and 1 ounce of heavy cream into a shaker filled with ice. Pour into martini glass and top it off with a dusting of nutmeg and garnish with cranberries, a sprig of rosemary, chocolate sprinkles, or whatever your creative Christmas spirit can create.

of the season LE S SONS

LOVE IS IN THE AIR, BREATHE DEEPLY

The holidays remind us of the importance of relationships. Connecting with family, friends, and community fosters a sense of belonging and love, encouraging us to nurture our bonds.

TO-DO LISTS THAT SEEM never ending ... shopping lists even longer than that! Days are shorter; life is busier; and family is coming to visit—yes, the holidays can start to feel overwhelming. But when that happens, take some time to decompress and remember that this time of year can offer great opportunities for reflection and growth. These lessons can enrich our holiday experience, deepening our spiritual journey and helping us cultivate a sense of peace and fulfillment. Here are some healthy mind, body, spirt lessons of the season:

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Taking time to reflect on what we’re thankful for helps us focus on the positives in our lives, and what you focus on grows. This practice can shift our perspective, allowing us to appreciate the present moment and all the blessings in our lives.

GIVING BACK AND PAYING FORWARD

Acts of kindness, whether through gifts, volunteering, or simply offering support, highlight the joy of giving. Generosity nurtures compassion and strengthens our connection to others.

NOURISH YOUR SOUL

FORGIVENESS HEALS

ADJUSTING OUR SAILS

Amidst the busyness, the holidays teach us to be present. Practicing mindfulness allows us to fully engage in the moments that make the season so joyous. Pray, meditate, write in your journal, walk in nature, or just curl up with a hot cup of herbal tea.

The holidays can be a time to mend relationships. Embracing forgiveness, whether for ourselves or others, frees us from past burdens and opens the door to healing and reconciliation.

The end of the year invites reflection on our experiences, growth, and aspirations. This period of introspection encourages us to let go of what no longer serves us and embrace new beginnings.

JOY AND CELEBRATION

Celebrating the season reminds us to find joy in our lives. Embracing happiness, even in small moments, fosters a sense of lightness and hope.
