AS THE BRIGHT LIGHTS AND GLOW OF Christmas fade into memory, we’re left with the quieter, slower days of winter. January often feels like a stark contrast to the holiday season’s hustle and bustle. The glittering decorations are packed away, the festive gatherings are over, and we’re left with short days, long nights, and a chill in the air.
Here in the Lake Norman area, we’re known for our long, sun-soaked summer days on the water—boating, swimming, and soaking up every golden hour. Winter, in comparison, can feel slower, quieter, and less exciting. But gaining momentum isn’t about wishing this season away. Instead, it’s about finding joy in what we have right now and embracing life’s natural rhythm.
LKNw TEAM
This time of year is an invitation to slow down, to appreciate the warmth of a crackling fire, the coziness of time spent with loved ones, and the peaceful beauty of the lake in its winter stillness. It’s a chance to pause, reconnect with those around us, and focus on making every day count—not through lofty resolutions, but through small, meaningful actions.
@LKNWomanMag
Momentum doesn’t have to look like grand leaps or dramatic changes. It’s found in the intentional choices we make every day. It’s choosing to savor the quiet moments, whether it’s a long conversation with a friend, tackling a small project that’s been lingering, or simply taking a walk by the lake and soaking in the crisp air.
This month’s issue is all about gaining that kind of momentum—through stories that inspire connection, health, and purpose. Whether it’s nurturing relationships, building habits that last, or finding new ways to create joy, our January issue is here to help you step into 2025 with intention and excitement.
As we move into this new year, let’s let go of the pressure to be perfect and focus on what truly matters. Together, let’s celebrate progress over perfection and the beauty of winter’s quieter pace. Here’s to making every day count—and to embracing the season for what it is: an opportunity to slow down, savor the moments, and reconnect with what truly matters. w

MIND, BODY, SPIRIT: Assessing And Managing Emotions
Welcome 2025 by reviewing your insurance to ensure it aligns with your needs and provides optimal protection. Here are a few key tips to get started:
Review your home’s market value to ensure your dwelling coverage is sufficient for replacement. Any improvements you have made will affect the value as well. Added valuable items like jewelry or heirlooms recently? Be sure to create a home inventory and get valuables insured, so you have adequate personal property coverage.
Evaluate how your vehicle is being used and any life changes from this past year. Additional coverage features can be tailored to fit your specific needs. Factors like credit history, marital status, driving records, mileage, and car type impact auto insurance costs. Do you use your car for your business? Your personal auto policy will not cover business use of a vehicle. You’ll
Make sure your financial liabilities are covered and loved ones are financially secure if you pass. The new year is a great time to review your assets, liabilities, dependents, and stage of life. Recently become a new parent? You’ll want to protect your child financially, not just your spouse. Child care should be part of your life insurance planning.
Have you added employees, changed operations, updated payroll or total sales projection, or moved business locations? It is time to re-evaluate the specific needs of your company and ensure your insurance coverage is aligned with your business needs. Schedule a yearly policy

A NEW YEAR, A NEW YOU:
Embracing Personal Growth through Education
THE NEW YEAR IS A TIME OF REFLECTION and renewal—a season for setting goals and embracing opportunities for growth. While many resolutions center on health or finances, this year, consider focusing on education as a transformative path to personal and family enrichment. Whether it’s enhancing your own skills or supporting your child’s academic journey, the start of the year is the perfect time to explore how education can unlock potential.
For parents, January is an excellent opportunity to reassess your child’s educational experience. Is their current school environment fostering curiosity, con dence, and a love of learning? Are they being challenged in a way that builds resilience, or supported in overcoming obstacles? If the answers leave you uncertain, it may be
time to explore alternative school placements or supplemental learning opportunities.
Choosing the right educational setting is one of the most impactful decisions you can make for your child’s future. Whether it’s a shift to a school with a specialized focus, enrolling them in extracurricular programs, or simply becoming more involved in their studies, small changes can lead to signi cant growth. Use the New Year to have honest conversations with your child about their goals, interests, and challenges.
At the same time, personal education should not take a backseat. Your commitment to lifelong learning sets an invaluable example for your child. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, pursuing professional development, or diving into topics
BY PRIORITIZING LEARNING—FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILD—YOU’RE NOT JUST IMPROVING A SINGLE YEAR; YOU’RE CREATING A FOUNDATION FOR A LIFETIME OF GROWTH AND ACHIEVEMENT.
you’ve always been curious about, your enthusiasm for growth will inspire them to value learning as a lifelong endeavor.
e New Year is a perfect moment to align family goals around education. Make it a family resolution to learn something new together—whether it’s trying a new recipe, exploring local history, or embarking on a creative project. Not only does this strengthen bonds, but it reinforces the idea that education is a shared journey, not a solitary task.
Remember, education is about more than test scores or diplomas; it’s about fostering the skills and mindset to navigate life’s complexities. By prioritizing learning—for yourself and your child—you’re not just improving a single year; you’re creating a foundation for a lifetime of growth and achievement.
As the calendar turns, let your family’s commitment to education become a cornerstone of your resolutions. Here’s to a year of discovery, success, and shared learning! w

Below, Marlene gives us an inspiring glimpse of the woman behind the business as she shares some of the things, experiences, and people that motivate her, fill her heart, and bring a smile to her face.
KEEPING IT PERSONAL
ALL IN THE FAMILY
ALTHOUGH MARLENE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN Canada, she went to high school in Portugal—her parents’ home country. After a few years, she returned to North America to attend the University of Waterloo in Ontario and eventually landed in the Lake Norman area. “My husband's family,” she explains, “is originally from California but had been living in Cornelius and Hilton Head for over 25 years. With our three boys and fur-baby in tow, we made the move more than 10 years ago to be closer to our family, and we absolutely adore it here!”
Real estate has been in Marlene’s family for over 30 years. Her father was a successful homebuilder in his day, and her sister owns her own real estate rm in Canada. is, coupled with her passion for helping others, led Marlene to her career in real estate. “I decided to go back to school and get my license,” she smiles, “and I have never looked back.”
Marlene Billesdon is a North Carolina and South Carolina licensed real estate broker with Helen Adams Realty. She is also the owner/ founder of Moving Made Easy with Marlene. You can connect with her at 704.351.7547 or visit www.billesdon.com.
My passion for education and building relationships with people fuels my desire to provide honest, knowledgeable, and transparent real estate (and moving) services to help people achieve their dreams. With my personal experience of relocating to a new state and country, I understand the challenges that come with the process. That's why I am committed to delivering a seamless and stress-free move to the best of my abilities.
PORTUGAL, PICKLEBALL, AND PLAYTIME
My father is my biggest inspiration. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 from Portugal with $20 in his pocket determined to make a better life for his family. He worked hard at learning English and working in the mines and labor jobs before sending for my mother and eldest sister. He eventually started working for a plumbing/ heating company and worked his way up to vice president of purchasing and eventually opened his own construction company. His tenacity, work ethic, and unwavering love for his family has always inspired me to pursue my dreams and to never give up.
Since my parents live in Portugal and we have a ton of family there, it’s one of our favorite destinations when we travel. In my dailies, I find exercise is a must for clarity of mind and overall health for body and soul. I especially enjoy pickleball and going to the gym. When it’s time to get a respite from the routine, nothing is better than sitting back with family and friends by the fire sipping wine. I am truly blessed and exceedingly grateful! w

“Hello, Parents!” From Melissa Forsyth I welcome students, parents, and visitors to the campus, and I’ve become quite familiar with forgotten lunches, homework, and other essential items that require extra trips to the school by parents. As someone who sees rsthand the impact of forgotten items, I wanted to share some practical tips you might utilize to help your child develop valuable responsibility and organizational skills.
Establish a morning and evening routine to ensure your child gathers necessary items (backpack, lunch, homework, etc.).
Help your child create a checklist of items to bring to school each day. Setting alarms or putting sticky-notes on the door as reminders can be helpful, especially for out-of-the-ordinary things such as special projects or something stored in the fridge.
Encourage your child to problem-solve and come up with solutions that work for them to remember their items. A reward system for consistent responsibility can be effective, while consequences such as temporarily removing or delaying privileges or screen time can motivate students to be more organized.
Consequences should be geared towards teaching responsibility, not punishment. Acknowledge and praise your child's efforts to stay organized. Be patient; developing organizational skills takes time, but it’s a worthwhile life skill to cultivate.
Study Strategies from Ms. Hoowe
• Have a dedicated space for completing homework assignments.
• Take small breaks.
• Use calendars (digital or paper) to schedule upcoming deadlines.
• Practice with flashcards.
• Rewrite class notes and/or make graphic organizers of notes.
• Use digital study options like Kahoot and Quizizz.
• Incorporate fun activities into studying for younger students: writing with chalk, using watercolors, jumping rope.
Phonetically Speaking: Tips from Mrs. Warren
When a child asks, "How do I spe ________?"
Don't just give the answer—ask your child to tap out the sounds they hear in the word. A student can be trained to tap one nger to the thumb per sound. e word "pot" has three sounds, /p/ /o/ /t/. Write three sound lines on a piece of paper, one line per sound, like this:
_____ _____ _____ . e child then "maps" one sound per line P O T . is process allows a child to break apart the word; map the word so they can visually see the three sounds; and then represent each sound with a letter or letter combination. w

Cyber Threats Are Evolving—
Is Your INSURANCE
Keeping Up?
AS CYBERATTACKS CONTINUE
to be increasingly frequent and cybercriminals become even more sophisticated and aggressive, cyber risks remain as the number one overall business concern. Not only are businesses vulnerable to cybercrime, but so are family homes and individuals – from ransomware incidents to fake scamming emails, to social media power outages, everyone is a target. Here are some things to consider as we enter 2025:
Top Current Cyber Threats
Phishing, spoofing, baiting
Third-party system hacking or email compromise
Weak security systems, software, cloud storage, passwords, and configuration
Cybercriminals using AI (Artificial Intelligence)
Unintentional human error or intentional insider threat
Extortion and ransomware
Malware/malicious software
Poor cyber education and prevention
Cyber Insurance Coverage
Cyber liability for businesses can help your business be prepared by providing a combination of coverage options to protect and services to aid in the recovery steps when data breaches and other cyber incidents occur. A cyber liability policy helps cover costs associated with notifying affected customers, recovering compromised data, repairing damaged computer systems, financial losses due to business interruptions, lawsuits, and more. Since cyber liability policies vary widely, choosing an insurance carrier that offers pre-claim services and guidance— beyond just handling claims—is highly valuable.
Cyber home coverage for individuals can be an optional endorsement to your homeowner's policy with a suite of coverages and services built to respond to cyber extortion, fraud, data breaches of personal information of yourself and others through your computer, connected mobile devices, and smart home devices. This coverage will help cover costs of data recovery, system restoration, cyber extortion response, direct financial loss resulting from fraud, and forensic and legal review costs from data breaches. w

7 Cybersecurity Tips
1 Pay attention to news alerts for cyberattacks and security warnings. Be alert and be cautious of suspicious texts, emails, phone calls, links, ads, and websites.
2 Set up multifactor authentication on all critical accounts and change passwords regularly. For businesses, ensure only authorized users can remotely access your network.
3 Keep your systems and software updated and use a firewall and antivirus software to help detect threats.
4 Maintain credible offline and cloud data backups of critical business or personal data and regularly back up your important data.
5 Businesses should use a Managed Detection Response (MDR) service for detection and response and have a regularly reviewed and updated Incidence Response Plan. Have clear procedures in place for employees to follow when a threat is suspected.
6 Make sure your business disaster recovery plan also extends to cyber incidents. This includes how your business will perform essential functions if completely unable to access client records, phones, and any core operating system.
7 Obtain a cyber liability policy for your business and home cyber protection insurance for your home.

LKNw JANUARY 2025
on CHOOSING A CAREER: From a young age, I always knew that I wanted to go into the healthcare field. My grandma and I would play doctor often when I was a child. When I was around the age of 10, she became very ill with cancer and passed away not long after. A year later, I also lost my grandpa to cancer as well. This further cemented the healthcare field for me as a career—originally thinking I would be an oncologist due to my experience with my grandparents.
on FINDING THE RIGHT FIT: As I entered college, I became more interested in dentistry. Growing up I had a good relationship with my family dentist and eventually got to shadow him and others. It soon became evident that this was the path for me. I loved the hands-on aspect and being able to help patients become healthier and happier. The fact that I could improve their oral health and help them gain confidence by fixing their smile was, and continues to be, extremely rewarding.
on FAMILY THAT FORMS US: As mentioned previously, my grandmother was a big influence. She spent a lot of time with me in my formative years reading to me, teaching me, playing games with me. She also had children at a young age and during a time when most women were stay-at-home moms; however, she always worked. From a factory mill to an after-school daycare program, to a correctional facility and even a nurse, she did it all while taking care of her family. She was a successful working woman while also being fully present in her home life. My other inspiration is my husband. He is my biggest supporter and number one fan. He is such an optimistic and kind person and has truly helped me see the world through a better lens.
on HARNESSING HAPPINESS: “Happiness is a mood, not a destination.” This quote resonates with me because like many people, I feel that we are always trying to get to the “next big thing” ... whether that’s pursuing academic degrees, getting married, having children, or going on that big vacation you saved up for. If you are constantly waiting to be happy, once you have achieved whatever you were trying to achieve, you inevitably miss out on the happiness we can find in our everyday lives. w

FOR ANNIE HANSON, CEO & Founder of e Closet Niche in Mooresville, the journey thus far has brought her many blessings—but not without a lot of hard work and some steep challenges along the way. As a busy mom, wife, businessowner, philanthropist, and friend to many, Annie’s world may spin fast, but her indominable spirit, unwavering faith, and genuine kindness inspire all who enter her orbit.
Finding your niche in life isn’t about a destination. It’s an ongoing journey of alignment with your true self— discovering where your unique passions, skills, and values intersect in a way that feels ful lling and impactful.
“I was raised that if you wanted anything in this world,” Annie shares, “you had to work hard for it yourself. Nobody was going to just hand it to you. I set goals and work hard to prove to myself I can do this and live the life that God has blessed me with—to continue to stay focused and humble on doing HIS will in every aspect of my life.”
Born in Winston Salem and raised in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Annie is married to husband Jon and together they share three children: Taylor (20), Jacob (19), and Colton (6). “My husband and I will celebrate 10 years of marriage this year. With our combined family, we like to say that together we have a ‘his, hers, and ours’ ... our kids are truly one of the biggest inspirations in my life. To pass along what was instilled in me and raise our kids to be hardworking, passionate adults is the greatest gift, and challenge, there is.”
Demonstrating the familyentrenched work ethic, it was her grandmother who got Annie her rst job—sowing socks in a mill for the summer when she was just 14 years old. From waiting tables to being an executive assistant, ight attendant, door-to-door sales, website designer, and even event singing (she’s been singing since she was 4!), Annie’s vast experience, skills, and interests have become fortuitous on many levels.
“I returned to college,” she says, “at Southeastern College in Charlotte to earn my license as a professional clinical and neuromuscular massage therapist— which led me to open my rst business, Carolina Club Spa, in 2009. In 2013, after a serious injury on my horse, massage therapy was not a career I could continue full-time, and I ended up back in corporate America trying to nd my way. I just felt like I had never quite discovered my niche, as it were, and was feeling a bit lost.”

at was all about to change. A family friend reached out about a local custom closet company that was hiring designers, and she thought Annie would be the perfect t. “At rst,” Annie recalls with a grin, “I thought, no way! I know nothing about designing closets or home projects except my own. After a lot of thought and prayer, I decided to give it a try, and I was shocked! Not only did I enjoy it, but I found out I was pretty darn good at it.”
After working for two other custom closet companies, Annie learned a lot about the industry and ways in which she felt she could improve. She especially enjoyed building relationships and being immersed in her community.
“I wanted to be able to do what I love,” she explains, “while creating a company that is based on relationships ... bonding with my clients on a personal level and o ering a quality product at a reasonable price. With much prayer and a huge leap of faith, in 2021 I formed e Closet Niche. I built it upon the ve values I feel are the building
Annie started e Closet Niche by herself, from the ground up, in her garage, and it is now a fullservice custom closet company and design studio with multiple employees and positions to ll. ey recently won the 2024 Best of Lake Award in the Specialty Category for the second year in a row. With Lake Norman Home Builders Association and voted on by builders from the National Home Builders Association, Annie graciously accepted the award: “It is an honor and a pleasure to be recognized as part of this incredible industry. I can’t thank my team enough for all their hard work and dedication.”
With faith as strong as her work ethic, Annie says she may not have it all gured out, but with belief in what is possible and holding tight to yourself and your values, you just might nd your perfect niche.
“I often turn to Jeremiah 29:11,” she smiles. “’I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ I live by faith that even though I don’t know what tomorrow brings, I have assurance that He does have a plan. I will continue to pray for His will in my life and business and that He will allow me to continue to serve the community and give back where I can.” w

LUXURY & VACATIONReal Estate POISED FOR GROWTH
OUR AREA CONTINUES TO RANK among the best places to live in the United States. Because of the mild climate; accessibility to mountains, beaches, and major cities; strong regional growth; and, believe it or not, a ordability compared to other markets, North Carolina’s luxury and vacation real estate is poised for signi cant growth in 2025.
With continued interest in second homes and remote work exibility, a lucrative market is predicted for the new year. Despite the destruction of Helene, there is ongoing interest in key regions like Western North Carolina. Asheville and many of the surrounding towns are expected to rebound quickly—giving more options for investment, growth, and renewal. Similarly, the coastal regions are maintaining demand, driven by buyers seeking waterfront properties and vacation rentals.
For precise investment opportunities or trends tailored to speci c regions, consulting with local real estate professionals or marketspeci c reports is recommended. e luxury and vacation real estate market is continuing to evolve, and trends in personalization, sustainability, technology, and the allure of unique travel experiences are making waves. Here are some key insights into the market:
PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCES: Luxury buyers and renters increasingly value tailored amenities such as curated itineraries, exclusive access to local attractions, and enhanced in-home experiences. is trend helps properties stand out and achieve higher client satisfaction and retention.
SUSTAINABILITY AND WELLNESS: Eco-conscious practices are becoming essential, with buyers favoring properties that incorporate renewable energy, eco-friendly designs, and wellness amenities like gyms and spas.
PRIVACY AND MULTIGENERATIONAL ASPECTS: Ultraprivate properties remain in high demand, particularly for families and high-pro le clients. Spacious homes that cater to multigenerational groups with family-friendly features and separate quarters are increasingly popular.
TECHNOLOGICAL INTEGRATION: Smart home technology, virtual concierge services, and enhanced connectivity are crucial di erentiators. Properties equipped with advanced tech features are more appealing in today’s world.
INVESTMENT STABILITY: Luxury properties are seen as resilient investments. Buyers often prioritize these as secure holdings, even amidst economic uncertainty. Prime urban and vacation destinations continue to command strong demand. w

Incorporate Remineralizing Products
• Use toothpaste with fluoride, which strengthens enamel.
• Try products with hydroxyapatite, a natural enamel component.
• Rinse with a fluoride mouthwash for extra protection.
Chew SugarFree Gum
Gum with xylitol reduces harmful bacteria and promotes saliva production.
Maintain a Balanced Oral Microbiome
• Avoid overusing antibacterial mouthwash, which can disrupt the natural bacterial balance.
• Include probiotics, such as those found in yogurt, to support oral health.
Adopt Consistent Oral Hygiene
• Brush twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and remineralizing toothpaste.
• Floss daily to remove plaque from between teeth.
• Visit a dentist regularly for professional cleanings and early detection of enamel issues.
When to See a Dentist
While natural remedies can be effective for early enamel damage, advanced cavities require professional treatment. If you experience persistent tooth pain or sensitivity, consult a dental professional promptly. w
The Best Part of Waking Up
“My kids continue to make me the proudest mom ever – not because of what they do, but because of who they are! Ellie (25) works for an NFL football team as a scout. Kase (24) works in the outdoor adventure business and splits his time between California, where he is a whitewater rafting guide, and Wyoming, where he works on the ski slopes. Buchanan (22), Jake (22), and Walker (20) are in college, doing college things, which I hope includes studying.”

Robin M. Mermans ROAD TO RESOLUTION
bisque recipe
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 cups half & half
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons dry sherry 1/2 pound crabmeat (I buy mine at Publix’s seafood counter in a small 8-oz container)
1 tablespoon Old Bay Dash of salt & pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
Finely chopped chives, Lemon wedges, for serving
1 Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the flour and whisk for about 1 minute, until well blended.
2 Whisking constantly, gradually add the half & half.
3 Add the mustard, Old Bay seasoning, salt, and pepper.
4 Bring to boil, whisking frequently. As soon as the soup starts to boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, until thickened, about 30 seconds.
5 Stir in the sherry and crabmeat. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. If the soup is too thick, add water, little by little, until desired consistency. Garnish with chives and lemon wedge.

ASSESSING & MANAGING EMOTIONS
AS WE ENTER 2025, let’s gain momentum toward being the best version of ourselves. With decades of scientific research under her belt, here are some insights from the wise and well-studied Brené Brown:
I always assumed that my emotions responded to my body freaking out. But really, my emotions are responding to my “thinking” assessment of how well I can handle something.
We feel S TR ESSED when we evaluate environmental demand as beyond our ability to cope successfully. This includes elements of unpredictability, uncontrollability, and feeling overloaded.
I used to use the terms STRESS and OVERWHELM interchangeably, but that does not serve us well. The growing field of neurolinguistics is teaching us that language doesn’t just communicate emotion, it shapes how and what we’re feeling.
The big learning here is that feeling both stressed and overwhelmed is about our narrative of emotional and mental depletion — there’s just too much going on to manage effectively. Naming the emotion helps us understand how to move through it.
OVERWHELM is the all-too-common feeling that our lives are somehow unfolding faster than the human nervous system and psyche are able to manage well. Our bodies and minds are experiencing that quicksand feeling.
There is growing evidence that the antidote to feeling overwhelmed appears to be nothingness or “non-doing” time. Now, I’ve trained myself to couple the terms “overwhelm” and “do-nothing.” When I am actually feeling overwhelmed, I say, “I’m overwhelmed, and I need 10–15 minutes of nondoing.” I normally walk the parking lot at work or go outside at home. Non-doing is important because there’s a growing body of research that indicates that we don’t process other emotional information accurately when we feel overwhelmed, and this can result in poor decision making.
