L I S T E N I N G T O Y O U R H E A R T is not always easy,
especially with all the “noise” that modern culture bombards us with. For me, it was especially hard to hear my heart, because in addition to the cacophony around me, it was quite loud inside my head, too. I not only spent an inordinate amount of time in there analyzing every action I took and every word that came out of my mouth, but there were also quite a few other voices in there vying for my attention. I even argued with them, reiterating my position, listening to my imaginary opponent’s counter argument, and then forming a counter argument to that counter argument. It was exhausting! Not only that, when I was growing up, my father actually chastised me for letting my heart lead my head. As far as he was concerned, the only thing a heart was good for was pumping blood around your body. Well, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but because raising a daughter didn’t come naturally to my dad, he decided he would just raise me as if I were a boy. As such, he was certain that allowing my emotions to rule my intellect would make me soft. (I feel you cringing … but this was the 70s.) And that’s how I came to live most of my life in my head, listening to voices I didn’t need to be listening to and overthinking things that weren’t worthy of a lot of thought. So imagine my surprise when I realized that my head didn’t really know all that much and what I thought it knew was mostly wrong. It was time to start using my heart more and my head less.

That doesn’t mean that my heart-felt decisions always take me down the easiest path; in fact, though my heart has never led me astray, it has steered me down some painful ones: it told me to walk away from someone I loved who was not good for me; it told me to leave a well-paying job and start my own business; it told me to bring home the crazy pit bull running around the adoption pen like a tornado. All of these decisions—the heart-wrenching and scary parts notwithstanding—turned out to be the right ones for me in the end. And my heart told me to give online dating one more go, even though I had kissed a lot of frogs and was certain there were no princes to be found. It’s a good thing I tuned in, too, because in listening to my heart, I met my husband— the most genuine and loving man I’ve ever known. He’s smart and funny, honest and kind. He’s my compass when I’m lost and my anchor when I feel adrift. He’s my partner in discovering that life is one big adventure, but only if you live it like one. Sure, the noise in my head can still distract me, but that’s ok, because the message that my heart now sends me could not be more loud or more clear: he IS my heart. w

Include superfoods in your daily diet. Think blueberries, brown rice, spinach, sweet potatos, salmon, walnuts, and oatmeal. Know your numbers. A normal reading for women over 20 is any blood pressure below 120/80 mm Hg; 140/90 or higher is considered too high.

D U R I N G HE A RT AWA R E N E S S M O N TH, it is a personal time of reflection. Have you ever loved someone so much that you wish you could give them your heart? Well, I literally attempted to be a heart donor while still living! April 9, 2015, I begged the doctor to extend my 12-year-old son Gabriel Michael Jacobs’ life by placing my heart in him. He experienced sudden cardiac arrest due to a heart defect we didn’t know existed. The doctor emphatically answered no, and I believe it was the right response since I needed to remain here to cheer for my remaining four children (Frankie, Ivan, Jeremiah, and Jayla) through their life’s journey.

Gabe is smiling from heaven because we formed Gabe’s Heart Foundation (501 c3 non-profit organization) to keep his heart beating on this earth. We do this by placing portable automated external defibrillators around the country where youth congregate. This gives trained individuals time to administer CPR and utilize the portable defibrillator while paramedics arrive. Gabe’s Heart Foundation will host our
A heart of gratitude is what I possess to be chosen as the mom of four more amazing children. I learn from each of them every day. My oldest son Frankie recently completed his studies at Chapel Hill with a major in computer science. He has a digital marketing agency and is currently pursuing a job in his field. Ivan, who beat cystic fibrosis, is a junior at UNC Charlotte and lost 100 pounds on his personal weightloss journey. He is a dual NASM certified personal trainer and also edits videos and serves as a student ambassador with Boomer Esiason Foundation. Jeremiah, who also battles cystic fibrosis, recently graduated high school with honors. He is an avid fisherman, builds websites, acts, and works another job as well.
My daughter, Jayla, who also kicks cystic fibrosis in the head, is in the 10th grade and is in the Arts Honor Society. Jayla draws animations from scratch on her YouTube channel. Ivan, Jeremiah, and Jayla (CF Trio) served as Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Ambassadors and spoke at The Guys and Dolls annual auction event to help raise $2.2 million last year! Gabe was affectionately known as “Guardian Gabe” serving as an anti-bullying mediator amongst his peers. He loved football and played in the national playoffs for the Northeast Dolphins Little League team the week prior to his passing. They retired his jersey #95, which looks like an NFL jersey since he stood 5’10 tall. My heart is thankful for my children and for my hero, my mom, who uprooted her life to help us navigate this difficult journey. w

DEPRESSION
HEART DISEASE—
Partners In Crime? W E A L L K N O W T H AT ST R E S S I S N OT G O O D F O R T H E H E A RT.
Same goes for smoking and obesity—these are no-brainers. But what about depression? Should it be formally and officially classified as a risk factor for heart disease? Most of the researchers answer with an unequivocal “Yes,” and the American Heart Association (AHA) agrees. “Depression should join the ranks of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and smoking as an official heart disease risk factor,” according to an expert panel convened by the AHA. Most of us realize how mind and mood affect our health. Just think how many times a headache has emerged after a stressful day. But, taking that notion a step further, and you can see how our mood can affect the cardiovascular system directly by creating a state of “emergency readiness” in which stress hormone levels rise, blood vessels constrict, and our heartbeat speeds up. If someone is depressed, this sense of emergency readiness becomes constant, which in turn damages the blood vessels. Simply put, the heart does not get the body’s signal to slow down and relax. The good news is that depression, despite being so pervasive, is treatable. And with proper awareness and education, people are more likely to seek that treatment. While not yet considered an “official” risk factor for heart disease, depression is certainly being singled out as a primary indicator, and that alone will make a positive impact when it comes to heart patients being appropriately screened, diagnosed, and treated. w
Here are some easy things you can do to improve your mood and heart health. While common and somewhat obvious, they are essential to good living and bear repeating for sure! STRETCH IT AND MOVE IT! Stretching and yoga-type movements have a fantastic calming effect and help keep you focused and fit. Additionally, exercise in general helps raise your endorphin levels, which relieves stress and ignites the pleasure centers of the brain. DON’T FORGET YOUR OMEGA-3S! Not only do our bodies need them, but research has shown that they help with depression as well. To load up on these naturally, think seafood and spinach! WATCH WHAT YOU EAT! Small and frequent meals that are low in saturated fat are the way to go. And remember, be sure to get your daily recommended servings of fruits and veggies! WATER, WATER, WATER! Remember the 8x8 rule, eight 8oz glasses of water a day. GET MORE SUN TIME AND FUN TIME! Need we say more?!

oral health can affect your heart. Whether you have an existing heart condition, congenital defect, or are at risk for cardiovascular events, it is important to make your dental provider aware of your health history. In fact, disclosing your entire health history is only going to help your dentist be able to safely treat you in the dental office. Your oral health can provide your medical and dental providers with warning signs for a range of diseases and conditions, including those in the heart. According to University of Pennsylvania Medicine, gum disease is found in nearly half of American adults ages 30 to 70 years old. With periodontal (gum) disease being as prevalent as it is, knowing how it can negatively affect your cardiovascular system is important. Bacteria that is in a mouth with gum disease can travel throughout the bloodstream, ultimately coursing through your heart. This can lead to inflammation and infection of the heart valves and vessels. Having your gums evaluated for periodontal disease every six months is an easy and effective way to prevent or lessen the risk of a vascular event such as a heart attack or stroke. Harvard Medical School tells us that you may be at a two to three times greater risk for having a heart attack or another serious cardio problem if you have gum disease. It is also important to know if you need to be premedicated for a dental appointment to prevent harm to your heart and its different anatomical components. According to the American Heart Association, if a patient has a prosthetic heart valve, congenital heart disease, or a history of infective endocarditis, it is necessary to take an antibiotic prior to dental work or a hygiene visit; this is called antibiotic prophylaxis. Again, this is an example of why it is extremely important to inform your provider about your health history. w
18
FEBRUARY 2024
.
lakenormanw oman.com
CONNECTION BETWEEN THE HEALTH OF YOUR GUMS AND YOUR HEART: There is an increased risk of heart disease if you have gum disease (periodontitis). Poor oral health increases bacterial infection of your bloodstream, which can directly affect the heart valves. Tooth loss patterns have been tied to coronary artery disease. Diabetics or those with prediabetes need to be diligent in oral care because those conditions put you at a greater risk for heart disease.
TIPS TO MAINTAIN ORAL HEALTH
(Especially if you have cardiovascular disease):
Brush at least 2x daily. Use floss or interdental brushes daily. Keep up with your routine dental appointments. Make sure your dental provider is aware of heart problems and your health in general. Follow instructions from a healthcare provider in regards to medication, i.e. antibiotic prophylaxis.

TEEN SPOTLIGHT
A Go-Getter From the Get-Go Perhaps my biggest passion is helping others. I volunteer with Bags of Hope throughout the year and was recently nominated as a candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2024 Charlotte Student Visionaries of the Year campaign. This sevenweek philanthropic leadership development program raises money to help cancer patients not only survive but thrive after treatment. My other passions are dance and swimming, which I’ve been doing most of my life. I’ve been with SwimMac Carolina for 10 years, and I’m on my school’s team as well. I’d also like to start a summer program for families in surrounding neighborhoods in my community who are unable to afford swim lessons.”
Motherly Inspiration My mom has inspired me so much. I am so grateful to her and all that she does for our family ... she works, takes care of us all, and still finds time to volunteer at my various activities. She motivates and encourages me to pursue my dreams, to be there for others, and to learn something new each day.
Bright Aspirations My dream is to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and study science. Ultimately, I want to be an orthodontist. I’ve been intrigued with this line of dental work after my own treatments, and I’m fascinated by the art and science of braces and teeth alignment.
Overcoming Obstacles, One Breath at a Time A challenge I have faced is being diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction, which has been affecting my swimming performance for about a year. It causes dysfunctional movement of the vocal cords, restricting the airway when you inhale. Despite this condition, I continue to push myself and give 100 percent each time I get in the pool. It’s taught me that although things do not always go as planned, if I just believe in myself and have the courage to never give up, that’s a huge win!
Peyton HAWKINS
Why World Cancer Day (February 4th) Means So Much I got involved with LLS because I want to make a difference, especially for kids, so they can be given the best chance to live out their hopes and dreams. Cancer does not discriminate and affects people of all ages. Breast cancer is something that has affected my entire family. I never had the chance to meet my grandmother and three of my aunts—they passed away before I was born. As I strive toward raising $100,000 for my campaign, I think of how the funds will help so many patients and their families. Whether it is helping them afford lifesaving medicine, helping them get to their doctors’ appointments, or connecting them with LLS support services, it makes me smile to know that these types of fundraisers exist and that I can be a part of it.
Peyton Hawkins is a sophomore at Lake Norman Charter in Huntersville. When she’s not busy with her swim teams, dance, coaching, and volunteering, Peyton enjoys travel, listening to music, watching football, and hanging out with friends and family. Life is not a dress rehearsal. And while this phrase may have become a bit cliché through the years, the words resonate for a reason. You mustn’t wait for things to get easier, better, different to start living. The time is NOW. If all the world is a stage, then each day you must don your costume and answer the curtain call, as it were ... it’s showtime!
Do this while remaining superbly authentic, grounded, and grateful and you’ll know a little more about Marlene Billesdon (Helen Adams Realty in Cornelius). A true go-getter, Marlene also founded her own company, MovingmadeeasywithMarlene, because of all the places she has lived. “With my personal experience of relocating numerous times, including internationally, “she explains, “I understand the challenges that come with the process. That’s why I am committed to delivering a seamless and stressfree move to the best of my abilities.” Born in Toronto, Canada, Marlene grew up in the small town of Brantford before moving to her parents’ hometown in Portugal where she finished high school. Her preference to attend college back in North America led her to the University of Waterloo in Ontario where she majored in English and economics. Marlene’s husband was born in California but lived in Canada for much of his life. He spent a lot of time in Hilton Head with his grandparents, which spurred his interest in retiring to the Carolinas. “We moved to Lake Norman about 10 years ago,” she says, “to be closer to family, and we absolutely adore it here.” Real estate runs in Marlene’s family with her father being a successful home builder in his day and her sister owning a real estate firm in Canada. After graduating from college, she worked in sales for a telecommunications firm and then decided to be a stay-at-home mom to her three children becoming, in her aptly chosen words, “a Domestic CEO managing a bustling household of boys.”

Marlene’s father is her hero and biggest inspiration. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 from Portugal with just $20 in his pocket. Determined to make a better life for his family, he worked hard at learning English and even harder in labor-intensive jobs. “He started working for a plumbing/ heating company,” she shares, “and worked his way up to VP of Purchasing and eventually opened his own construction company building homes. My dad’s tenacity, work ethic, and unwavering love for his family has always inspired me to pursue my dreams and to never give up. At 91 years of age, he continues to amaze me – he has been married to my mom for 70 years and even though she has Alzheimer’s, he has been her primary caregiver until last year. His love for her and his family, especially his grandchildren, is truly remarkable.” Sadly, Marlene’s family is no stranger to disease and loss. Her aunt passed away from ALS at only 55 years old, and her cousin (who was more like a brother to her), lost his life in a car accident when he was just 30. “It’s a very difficult part of life and it’s particularly hard to watch your loved ones suffer from a distance ... my parents have been stuck in Portugal since COVID so it can be a challenge to say the least, but we keep our gratitude intact.” A large part of Marlene’s heart is devoted to Little Smiles of North Carolina—a volunteer-driven, nonprofit charity that provides gifts and fun activities for children impacted by serious illness or trauma. Her mother-in-law, Margi Kyle, is the founder of the North Carolina chapter and knows all too well the countless hours spent in the hospital with a child. Her son (Marlene’s husband) broke his neck when he was
”

15 years old and spent months in the hospital. This fueled Margi and the entire family to give back and pay it forward. “We all volunteer as much as we can,” Marlene says, “and I donate a portion of my sales to the North Carolina chapter of Little Smiles and to the Alzheimer’s Association.”
Fluent in Portuguese and formally trained in jazz, tap, ballet, and Portuguese Folklore Dancing, you can see where Marlene gets her energy and zest for life. As it is for so many of us, the hardest part of a full life is time management, but Marlene seems to keep all her plates spinning.
This passion for helping others runs deep for Marlene, and it is evident in her business as well. “Building relationships,” she smiles, “is one of my greatest joys. I love working with diverse individuals. There’s always something new to learn when collaborating with others from different backgrounds and cultures. Staging homes to make them ‘showstopper-ready’ is one of my favorite parts ... it is my greatest desire to provide honest and transparent services to help people achieve their real estate dreams. It is incredibly rewarding.”
Recognizing how fleeting life can be, her perspective is impressive and noteworthy: “I tend to go all-in and lose track of time so maintaining the delicate balance of work and home is something I continue to cultivate. I find that daily exercise is essential to maintaining a good headspace. A lot of problems can be solved with a good, long walk or on the pickleball court! Be kind to yourself and spread love and gratitude; you will find more of it yourself. I believe that what you focus on gets bigger, so let’s focus on the good stuff. Life is a one-time offer ... live it well!” w

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue …. Tradition
after long-standing tradition, let’s look at some interesting (or not!) wedding facts:
lakenormanw oman.com
The tradition of a wedding cake comes from ancient Rome where guests broke a loaf of bread over the bride’s head to wish the couple good fortune and fertility.
Grace Kelly’s wedding dress had a bodice made from 125-year-old lace.
In Egypt, the bride’s family traditionally does all the cooking for a week after the wedding so the couple can relax.
In the western world, the tradition of the bride wearing a white dress started with Queen Victoria in 1840. Until then, brides just donned their finest gown. w

STAY HYDRATED -
Drink plenty of water to keep impurities away and keep the area around your eyes from becoming too puffy. As a bonus, it will make your skin glow and speed up your metabolism! It’s the easiest way to get ready for any big event.

OVERINDULGE IN SNACKS -
The no-brainer side effect of not eating healthily in the weeks before the wedding is the chance that you may not fit into your dress. But that’s only one of the negative consequences. Fried foods, junk food, and sweets will leave you with clogged pores and less than glowing skin.

While a warm glow to the skin looks great in person, you can easily overdo it. You certainly don’t want to have to deal with unsightly tan lines or a spray tan that’s too orange. It’s best to avoid heavy tanning or last-minute sprays during the week before the wedding. w

Four Conversations To Have Before Saying "I Do"
We’re Here to Help
By Robin M. Mermans, Esq., Owner of ROAD to RESOLUTION
IF YOU AND YOUR PARTNER ARE RECENTLY ENGAGED – congratulations!
FINANCES, ASSETS, AND DEBTS Prior to getting married, financial conversations are a must. This can be a difficult topic to approach, so having a trained legal professional guide the discussion is helpful. We will talk about income, taxes, assets, debts, investments, gifts, inheritance, and trusts and how your financial obligations toward one another will change once you wed. 1
This is such an exciting time in your lives and you should enjoy every moment of pre-marriage bliss! As you look ahead to your future together, it’s important to also look at the legal ins and outs of marriage. Tying the knot isn’t just a personal commitment to one another – it’s a legally binding contract. As a Collaborative Family Law attorney with personal and professional experience with marriage, divorce, and parenting, I created a Pre “I Do” Education service so couples can understand the terms of the consequential legal contract called marriage, prior to saying “I Do.” Understanding various topics including financial, professional, and familial prior to marriage can create a stronger foundation for a successful relationship. Here are five topics that are discussed with newly engaged or soonto-be engaged couples during our Pre “I Do” Education meeting:
980.260.1600
|
2 PROFESSIONAL AND CAREER GOALS While you and your soon-to-be spouse may have one outlook right now on professional careers, it could change over the next several decades together. It’s important to discuss goals and what plans might look like from a legal standpoint if one or both of you changes careers, starts a business, leaves the workforce, loses a job, retires early, etc.
CHILDREN AND FAMILIES If you and your partner want to have children together, there are additional legal responsibilities as well as personal obligations that you’ll have to one another as well as your children. During our meeting we’ll explore everything child-related from from finances and health insurance to childcare. 3
4 FUTURE OF THE MARRIAGE When you get married, you’re dreaming of forever. But the reality is that half of all marriages end in divorce. Ending a marriage is never easy so we will discuss how pre and post nuptial agreements can help prevent future legal issues and protect not just one, but both parties. Divorce impacts couples in varying ways, but understanding this prior to marriage can create a stronger foundation for a successful relationship.

ROAD to RESOLUTION’s Pre “I Do” Education takes the guesswork out of legal obligations once married. Couples will gain an understanding of how marriage impacts finances and families so they are prepared to wed with not only confidence in love but confidence in the legal consequences too. Please give us a call at (980)260-1600 to learn more and schedule your Pre “I Do” Education meeting. Robin M. Mermans is a Collaborative attorney, certified mediator, and co-parenting coach. She owns ROAD to RESOLUTION: Divorce Mediation and Collaborative Family Law, in Charlotte. With her unique perspective as an attorney, mother, and stepmother, she is an expert in shared parenting solutions and co-parenting guidance. She is committed to using her personal story and passion to help her clients save time and money, while avoiding unnecessary emotional turmoil during their divorce journey and on their road to resolution.

A BAD FIRST IMPRESSION IS HARD
for a potential buyer to get over— you can’t unsee what has been seen. In order to attract the largest pool of buyers to pay top dollar for your home, follow these strategies. Preparing a home for sale doesn’t have to cost a lot of money; however, it does take some effort to maximize a return on investment.

Declutter and depersonalize each room. It’s hard for buyers to envision themselves living in your home if there are obstacles blocking their view. To make the home feel spacious, remove oversized furniture that takes up too much floor space, clear out about half of the contents from closets, and take down artwork and personal photos that cover significant wall space. Go ahead and pack these items in moving boxes/ containers and store them in the garage. Buyers don’t typically purchase a home for its amazing garage space, so it is ok to use this area as temporary storage in efforts to declutter the rest of the home. Hide valuables. Cabinets and drawers in the kitchen and bathrooms are often opened to view the amount of space. Take stock of what is stored there and secure items you care about such as medicine, jewelry, keys, passcodes/ passwords, and anything else that might be important. Deep clean and deodorize. A deep and/or professionally cleaned home can go a long way in a potential buyer looking past blemishes the home might have. Dirty, stinky, and cluttered homes give the buyer the impression the home is not well maintained and leads to the question,
lakenormanw oman.com
“What else is wrong with it?” Kitchens and bathrooms should be sparkling, and older carpets should be steam cleaned or replaced if there are stains or odors. Apply inexpensive upgrades. Renovated kitchens and bathrooms will almost always reap a significant return on investment. However, there are less expensive things you can do to increase home value and bring it up to date such as freshly painted walls and cabinets as well as new light fixtures. Hire a home inspector to conduct a pre-list inspection. Home inspections are relatively inexpensive, and it allows an opportunity to identify if there is anything wrong with the house that you might not know about—such as roof leaks, a leaky/moldy crawl space, plumbing leaks, or deficiencies with windows, HVAC systems, or appliances. Oftentimes it’s cheaper for the seller to coordinate their own repairs/replacements ahead of listing the property for sale rather than waiting for the buyer’s inspection report to discover any problems. Once the improvements are made, they can be included in a listing description as a selling feature which will make the property stand out from others. w

3 FITNESS PROGRAMS FOR OLDER ADULTS: Age-appropriate fitness programs are on the rise, as is the number of physically fit and active seniors.
TRENDS
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has released its findings of the new fitness trends for 2024. This annual survey not only offers insight into what fitness regimens are most popular and effective, but for businesswomen everywhere it sheds some light on what drives the market. So without further ado, here are the Top 5: 1 WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY: Smartwatches, heartrate monitors, and other fitness trackers are helpful health aids and provide motivation for many.
2 HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING:
An example of this would be to run as fast as you can for one minute and walk for two; then repeat the intervals for 15 or more minutes. The best part? No gym required!

spoiler alert:
MEN AND WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT. Ok, so maybe that fact didn’t really surprise you. After all, it’s been a few decades since John Gray popularized the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. And as much as we love sharing women’s stories, we decided it was time to lend the Martians of LKN our ear, too. This month we share the perspectives of Emmanuel Deku with Opulence Group Real Estate. SPORTS AND HOBBIES AND TRAVEL, OH MY!
EMMANUEL DEKU,
OPULE N CE G R O U P R E A L E ST A T E
FROM AFRICA, WITH LOVE
I grew up in Accra, the capital city of Ghana — a country in West Africa. I lived in numerous cities in the United States before moving to North Carolina in 2010. We had family and friends who lived in Mooresville and my wife, Jayne, and I absolutely fell in love with the area when we visited, as did our two kids, Jayden and Emma. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. PLENTY OF POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
Psalm 23 centers me greatly: ““The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” And when I need a reason to smile, I think of the times I spent with my mother. I have so many memories with her, and that keeps me grounded.
My favorite hobby is playing table tennis. It brings out my competitive spirit! I also love to unwind by listening to music and podcasts or watching sports shows. My other passion is traveling internationally any chance I get. I’ve visited Toronto, London, Dusseldorf, and Paris to name a few. Honestly, my favorite places are the ones brimming with good food, good music, and good friends. ALL ABOUT ADVICE
If I were to give my younger self some nuggets of wisdom, I would tell him to work hard. But perhaps more than anything else, I think the best advice is to be kind, patient, and always, always smile.
SWITCHING GEARS BY SWITCHING CAREERS
I worked in IT (network administration) for years, but after being laid off in 2016, I decided I did not want to work in corporate America any longer. That was the impetus for me to take the leap into real estate in 2017 when I was in my 50’s. I never looked back. Around that time, I also started making healthier choices to live a more balanced life. I began waking up early to exercise, and I poured my energy into my new career. It was scary, but invigorating. LOVING LIFETIME LEARNING
I’m proud of my ability to be disciplined, compassionate, and to empathize with others. I’m a big proponent of keeping everything in perspective. Some of my favorite mantras are: “Mind Over Matter,” “It could’ve been worse,” “In everything good or bad, always come from a place of gratitude,” and my favorite, “Be Happy” — not because everything is good all the time but because you can choose to see the positives in the situation. I also love the belief that the purpose of life is to LIVE IT! That always keeps me motivated. w

We know how busy life can get—kids, work, family, friends … sometimes just getting dinner on the table is a Herculean feat! So in an effort to save our readers some time, effort, and money here are a few tips, tricks, and hacks that might come in handy in your busy world!
Elegant But Easy This Valentine’s Day (or any special day!), prepare this easy yet elegant Beef Wellington that’s sure to impress. First, sear the tenderloin pieces on both sides (45-60 seconds per side). After they cool, spread a bit of Dijon mustard on each filet and wrap in puff pastry (from your grocer’s freezer). Bake the Wellingtons in a 400-degree oven until the pastry is fully cooked and golden brown (about 20 minutes).
Repair to the Boudoir Easy fixes to glam up the bedroom include new light fixtures, lamps, and hardware; area rugs or runners; plants and a table-top fountain; a focal-point piece of fine art. (Painting in photo is an MGFreeman original. Visit www.marionfreeman.com)

Lookin’ Good! To glam up your looks at the last minute, apply lipstick to both your lips and your cheeks, also rub a bit on the tip of your nose and chin—be careful not to over apply, the idea is to freshen-up your color, not clown-it-up! Sunglasses (even as a headband) and a scarf are nice to have on-hand as well for a quick, dressy look.

Glam Up Your Next Party Set the mood with lighting. Swap out white light bulbs for colored ones and adorn some areas with twinkle lights. Once the sun goes down, place light dimmers on low and light candles throughout the house. In the bathroom, clear your counters of everything except a fresh bar of soap and at least one fresh hand towel. For a really nice effect, float tea candles in the bathtub with some flower petals ... it’s a game-changer!

stressors, which become a deterrent to inner peace. Life is fragmented and disconnected. Our minds race at a frenetic pace creating an unenjoyable state of being. We live in a hurry-up, go-do state of life. If you stop and sit for just 30 minutes, what churns in your mind – silence and openness, memories and dreams, OR problems and responsibilities? In most minds, there is no stillness or silence. Our minds reel trying to solve problems while balancing life and work. It is a maze of who, what, where, how, and what-ifs.

A HELPFUL MINDFULNESS EXERCISE IS to close your eyes, take a deep breath in, hold it, and then release all the air and heaviness out. Repeat your breath work two more times and on the last breath imagine your roots extending from your feet, which are connecting to Mother Earth. Your roots extend deep into her soil, allowing whatever negative thoughts, emotions, or experiences to be released from your body into the core of Mother Earth. IT IS AT THIS POINT YOU BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY toward meditation and mindfulness. Terms which are increasingly used in conjunction with improved mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. You detach from outside stimuli and quiet yourself. Your focus is on being in the present, totally engaged in experiential experiences without judgement. It is the pause, the deep breath, the emersion of yourself that produces the calm inner peace. This practice slows you down, engaging your world and allowing you to live in the moment. MAKE A COMMITMENT TO SLOW DOWN, BE PRESENT, AND CONNECT. Active listening is a hard and important skill.
You commit to a conversation to truly hear and feel what is being said. You are centered and engaged in that moment. Release random thoughts and judgmental nuances. Eye contact binds the moment. This solidifies your intention to be more aware. It is the measure of what is going on around you. You are choosing to live, to be more creative, and to be more considerate of yourself and others.
MINDFULNESS ENGULFS THE SENSES. Notice your world through your senses with pleasure. Immerse yourself in tastes, sights, and sounds. Nature and mindfulness go handin-hand so enjoy the beauty around you. Take in the rays of sunshine, the intricacies of a wooded path, the song of a bird … stop, breathe, embrace. You are in that moment and that moment alone. You are grounded and subsequently freed from negative energy. w LKN EXPERT
