of that intuitiveness when it came to experimental aircraft, sure nailed it when he crooned those words about the ups and downs of life.

I suppose it goes without saying, but I definitely prefer the diamond-y days over the rocky ones. It’s quite easy to rise above—to elevate, as our theme this month suggests—when the day is going right…like when I stumble upon a half bag of Reece’s Cups that I hid from myself in a seldom-opened drawer. On the rocky days, I mostly pout. My well-meaning husband will try to help by reminding me that I have so much to be grateful for. I usually respond by mumbling curse words under my breath. It’s not because he’s wrong, it’s that his reminder only makes me feel worse…like a selfindulgent brat who has some kind of gratefulness disorder.

I wish I could be more like Charlie Brown on my stone days. Sure, he is a bit pensive for a kid, but with good reason.

After all, nearly all of his days are stones. He’s continually humiliated by a bully who not only calls him a horrible name liking his head to an unflattering shape but who also takes great pleasure in pulling a football away just as he’s about to kick it. Adding insult to injury, his adult neighbors give other children candy on Halloween, but only give him rocks. In addition, Charlie pines for the Little Red-Haired Girl and a kite that will fly, both of which remain just out of reach. It’s no wonder that at the tender age of eight he needs a psychiatrist.

If I were Charlie Brown, those neighbors would have flaming bags of poo decorating their front stoops, and Lucy would receive the swift kick meant for the football. But retaliation isn’t Charlie Brown’s style. Even though he faces day after day of disappointment, he remains hopeful that tomorrow he will triumph. Charlie Brown chooses to focus on the diamond days sure to come—to rise above, even when his circumstances are less than ideal.

We all have our stone days in which, to quote Mr. Denver once again, “the hard times won’t leave us alone.” But there is a lesson to be learned from our loveable loser friend who never kicks the football or gets the girl or pulls a Reece’s cup out of his trick or treat bag: it’s our response to moments of defeat that really defines the type of person we are, not the moments themselves.

What might the days that I get nothing but rocks look like if instead of pouting I choose to be thankful for the simplest of gifts?

Rather than mumbling curses, what if I opt to see the good in others? If I can harness some Charlie Brownness, those days just might look less rocky and a lot more blingy.

And while I may not be inclined to philosophical contemplations like Charlie Brown, I’m no blockhead either: blingy is better. w DANA JORDAN PUBLISHER

on A DIVINE PATH: I have always known I wanted to work with people. I grew up in Kendallville, Indiana, and after college I worked for the state’s Department of Education, Mitchell Community College, NASCAR Tech, and the Charmaine Modeling School. My husband, Todd, and I are high school sweethearts and we moved to North Carolina in 1997. I stayed home with our two beautiful children Ashtyn (20) and Colby (18) until God opened a new door for me. In 2015, a good friend of mine asked me to fill in for her at Liberty Preparatory Christian Academy in Mooresville. This would be the jumpstart to my career in education. The school grew quickly, and I was tapped to lead the admissions department in 2020, a very unpredictable time. Thankfully we doubled our enrollment and moved to a new, thriving campus. God definitely had a plan for me! on OVERCOMING OBSTACLES ONE PRAYER AT A TIME: Although my parents divorced when I was young and we struggled financially, my mom stayed faithful in God’s word. As a single mother, she taught me to be strong, independent, humble, and grateful for everything. She’d tell us, “Every day is a gift.” As a small family unit, we relied on each other a lot, and it made me and my brother particularly close. My mom remarried to the best stepdad anyone could have asked for, and he taught me many family values. I’ll always be grateful to him for that. on THE BEINGS WHO’VE SHAPED ME: I am so blessed to raise two happy, kind, successful kids. My proudest moment is watching them follow God's path.

I am very proud of both of them for becoming who they are today and to see them work hard to achieve their goals. Colby was diagnosed with Steven-Johnsons syndrome—a rare skin condition—when he was a baby.

The doctors told us he might not make it through the night. I simply would not accept that ... my faith was stronger than the diagnosis. We prayed and he recovered. Now a bright energetic teen, I couldn’t be more thrilled with all he’s accomplished! on UNWINDING MINDFULLY: I’m so thankful I work for a place that puts God and family first. My family is my world! I love that our home is the “hangout house” ... almost every day my house is full of kids. I let them be themselves and will always listen to them. I keep up on the current trends so that I know what they are talking about. It’s not always easy, though! I try to unplug from work as much as possible when I’m at home and focus on being 100 percent present. I’ve found that spending time boating and reading by the pool is cathartic, as is spending time with my two shepherd dogs, Marley and Shelby. All the people (and furbabies!) in my life show me how important it is to be in the moment. w

between sleep, memory, and learning is a complex phenomenon that is not entirely understood; but, say researchers, the quality and quantity of sleep are essential when it comes to brain function. If we don’t get enough sleep, our moods, motivation, judgment, and perception get off track, all of which affect learning. This is especially true for children as they are acquiring knowledge at a very rapid rate, and sleep patterns can be tricky—if not downright challenging—for our kids. Here are additional factors why sleep is so important to your child’s learning and overall brain health:

Sleep deprivation keeps you from being able to focus your attention properly.

Adequate sleep is essential for proper memory function.

Recall occurs when we’re awake, but research suggests that memory takes place during sleep when neural connections are being strengthened.

REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is critical in visual learning, and SWS (slow-wave sleep)— which is deep, restorative sleep—contributes to memory and newly acquired information.

5 Things To Help Your Child Sleep 1 Establish a bedtime routine and be consistent.

2 Begin dimming the lights and settling the mood as bedtime approaches.

3 Have healthy bedtime snacks. Proteins such as oatmeal or whole wheat toast with peanut butter encourage sleep.

4 Get away from electronic devices and read aloud together before bedtime instead.

5 Do not use bed/ bedtime as a punishment.

always been really interested in creative activities, so the summer before she started second grade, I decided to start giving her lessons in ballet, jazz, and tap in a studio we built in our basement.”

“My dad signed me up for dance classes when I was 5 years old,” she shares. “I loved everything about my dance studio growing up, and I got involved in every way possible.”

After a few weeks, the mama teacher had a bonafide “a-ha” moment smack in the middle of a lesson: why not teach other students and families looking for a more personalized dance experience?

And just like that (well, after a ton of hard work!) Neighborhood Dance was born. Michelle says she’s incredibly proud of how her dance community has flourished—something she couldn’t have done without the support of her family, which also includes her son, Luke.

Michelle attended a performing arts high school and danced through her collegiate years by training at Florida School of the Arts. When she graduated, she got her first professional performing job on the Disney Cruise Lines and, soon after, moved to the Big Apple.

All of her hard work, training, and perseverance paid off, and her Off-Broadway dreams resulted in her favorite role to this day — Rumpelteazer in the celebrated musical, Cats. “That was a thrilling time for me,” she recalls. “That show and that part hold such a special place in my heart.”

Those experiences led her to where she is today—teaching and mentoring students of all ages about how transformative the performing arts can be. That particular journey began when she and her husband, John, moved from Connecticut to Lake Norman. It completely changed their lives for the better.

Michelle’s daughter, Emily, inspired her entrepreneurial spirit back when the now-teenager was in elementary school. “Emily’s

With roots embedded in Pine Mountain, Georgia, Dr. Lake’s journey began at Tulane University where she earned her undergraduate degree in both molecular biophysics and chemistry.

Continuing at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, she not only obtained her medical degree but also earned a master’s in public health, further shaping her holistic approach.

Today, as a double-board certified physician in both internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Lake’s practice is defined by her warm, compassionate nature.

Choosing the more extensive med-peds training (four years versus three in the broader family medicine residency), she emphasizes, “I enjoy the gentleness needed for children but also the intellectual depth required for complex medical cases spanning all ages.”

Balancing the demands of medicine with her personal life is a challenge she navigates with finesse, but like any busy mom in today’s world it doesn’t come without intent and purpose. “When not at work, most of my time is spent with my husband and children,” she shares. “We have two sons: Robbie, 15, and Liam, 14 ... and an adorable

goldendoodle named Sanibel. We make a point to eat together every night, and we usually spend an hour together before bedtime. On the weekends, we always plan some sort of family activity.”

With much to be grateful for, the good doctor is fully aware of her blessings and takes nothing for granted. In a world where time often dictates the depth of care, Dr. Lake’s practice stands as an oasis—a place where patients are not hurried through appointments but embraced with time, empathy, and understanding. In other words, essential human bonding.

It is evident to see in Dr. Lake’s eyes the joy and passion she has for what she does. She loves each and every person with her whole heart. Her comprehensive and compassionate healthcare addresses every concern each patient has— leaving no stone unturned.

“Primary care medicine,” she says, “has turned into a gerbil wheel of popping on a band-aid and shipping a patient to a specialist for more expensive care within ‘the system.’ Better primary care involves taking the time to listen to the patient and doing a thorough exam to discover the root of the problem and not just treat symptoms. I have not let the climate within the industry change how I practice medicine. I have and always will focus on building relationships and helping folks with disease prevention and management. for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but physicians are looking to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as a treatment that is showing great promise in mitigating its symptoms.

HBOT targets the source of the condition by treating damage and inflammation in the brain. As a result, parents and children with ASD are seeing promising results.

For people with autism, HBOT has shown improvement in behavior, memory, social interaction, language and verbalization, cognitive function, reduction in repetitive behavior, increased eye contact, improved sleep patterns, and improved motor skills.

HBOT has proven to be a very potent anti-inflammatory and promotes neuroplasticity in the brain.

Previous research has shown that microglial cells, which are the immune cells of the nerves in the brain responsible for fighting infection, is always activated resulting in constant inflammation in the brain. Dr Efrati and his group published a research article in 2022 that studied autism in an autism animal model. Efrati’s group reported that HBOT reduces inflammation and improves blood and oxygen supply to the brain thus improving brain function.

The gastrointestinal system is another area that is often affected with a correlation between incidence and severity of ASD symptoms.

Our kitchen sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria. To sterilize, wet it completely and microwave for one minute. You can also run it through the dishwasher. The extreme heat will zap any bacteria growing in your sponges. Repeat this every few days.

Wash your bedding at least once a week on a hot setting. While you sleep, your body sheds dead skin cells and these accumulate in your bedding. CREATING A ZEN GARDEN AT HOME M E R R I A M -W E B ST E R ’ S D E F I N E S Z E N as “a state of

calm attentiveness in which one’s actions are guided by intuition rather than by conscious effort” and that the transmission of wisdom is supposed to be nonverbal.

Zen is an ancient branch of Buddhism but has morphed into a catch-all term meant to evoke calmness, meditative states, enlightenment, and intuitive insights.

Zen gardens are simple and are intended to get the most meaning with the fewest materials. Often called “rock gardens,” they usually consist of sand, rocks, and sometimes water. In North Carolina’s mild climate, you can enjoy an outdoor Zen garden yearround or if you prefer, create it indoors ... the magic is the same! Here are a few things to meditate on:

DO SOME RESEARCH. You’ll want some visual inspiration so search online to see what elements you may want to include such as soft lighting, stones, or a fountain (though not one of the basic elements in a Zen garden, the sound of water is therapeutic).

ZEN GARDENS ARE STRUCTURED AROUND SEVEN GUIDING PRINCIPLES. Your Zen garden should promote most or all these concepts: Austerity (Koko), Simplicity (Kanso), Naturalness (Shinzen), Asymmetry (Fukinsei), Mystery or Subtlety (Yugen), Magical or Unconventional (Datsuzoku), and Stillness (Seijaku).

SIMPLICITY IS ZEN! A Zen space should be simple and uncluttered—it needs to elicit a feeling of calm. Create your space with calmness in mind and with just a few decorative items.
