closets, my house, my files, my finances, and … oh, who am I kidding, my life in general. Be a better mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Re-write my will. Put my photos in albums (Do they still make photo albums?). Read better books, improve my golf game, eat more broccoli. Become a bestselling author. Stop saying “like” as in “I’m, like, so hungry.” Stop making New Year’s resolutions.

DANA JORDAN

That’s typically what my resolution list looks like. But as glad as I am that 2021 is finally here, I feel rather anxious about it, too; after all, I don’t think anyone can deny that 2020 was a bit of a jerk. So I decided to simplify my resolution list and make it not only obtainable, but also one that could beget a satisfying and rewarding year, no matter what comes: in 2021, I’m going to be more like my dog, Chloe. I came to this decision after Chloe ate my teeth whitening gel. I was not happy with her when I arrived home to find pieces of plastic, cardboard, and goo strewn all over my den the evening of the crime. Though she tried to placate me with her sad, puppy-dog-eyed look of contrition, I went to bed angry with her, and she slunk off to the laundry room, tail between her legs and guilty as charged. And then morning came. I awoke to find Chloe standing over me with her favorite toy in her mouth and a fiercely wagging tail. Remorse gone and ill deed forgotten, she wasn’t the least bit concerned about the night before— she was in today. While thoughts such as “What will I fix for dinner?” “Am I contributing enough to my 401K?” and “I need to get more teeth whitener” were already rattling around in my brain, Chloe’s thoughts were focused on that moment: "This toy makes an excellent squeaky noise!” Chloe doesn’t spend any time at all thinking about when she wiped out at the dog park and face-planted in front of all the other dogs, or, in addition to the gel, all the other things she has dug up, chewed up, and thrown up. She’s not still upset at me for accidently leaving her out in the rain or for bringing home that dastardly cat. And she doesn’t worry about stuff that may or may not happen. Somehow she innately knows that doing so would interfere with her naps, her focus on watching out for the Amazon delivery van, or chasing said cat. She simply takes life as it comes, enjoying each moment as it is happening, only now she does so with a smile that dazzles. I know that if I am more like Chloe, I have a shot at enjoying 2021—thriving even, regardless of what is going on around me. Though riding in the car with my head out the window and greeting new acquaintances by sniffing them in the behind does not appeal to me in the least, I resolve to emulate Chloe and take 2021 one moment at a time…and call the dentist about that teeth whitening gel so I too can do so with a stunning smile. w

MEREDITH Reiber LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE

LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO

CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.

on FINDING YOUR PASSION: I am one of the lucky ones who found my career path early in life. I began teaching group aerobics while in college and when I realized I could turn a hobby into a career, I eagerly jumped into the fitness industry. My first job was a Navy Fitness Specialist training active duty and veterans. From there I discovered a love of all movement and pursued multiple certifications from the American Council on Exercise. I have since moved to gym management and currently manage the Anytime Fitness in Kannapolis. Having been in the fitness industry for almost 10 years now, I’ve witnessed exercise improve the quality of life for so many; but, I’ve also watched the struggle and frustration that so many experience while killing themselves in the gym to yield little to no weight loss. It was at this point I became a licensed nutrition consultant with The Diet Doc and a certified nutrition consultant through The National Academy of Metabolic Science. on FINDING YOUR HOME: I grew up outside of DC and attended the University of Tennessee. Since then, I have lived in Key West, Australia, California, and Ohio. As a self-proclaimed, “entrepreneur trapped in a gypsy soul,” I am excited to finally establish roots in North Carolina with my husband and nutrition company. I met my husband eight years ago while he was living in Cornelius, and I visited Lake Norman frequently. What really sold me on Lake Norman was the active lifestyle the community has—be it paddle boarding, a jog through the neighborhood, or hopping from one yoga studio to the next … exercise is everywhere! on BEING PART OF A TEAM: My business partner, Alexa Miller, has been a key player in my success. Alexa owned the first gym I managed and introduced me to The Diet Doc. What I lack in, she makes up for. Her weaknesses are my strengths. Being able to inspire others is one thing. Being able to be inspired by others while working with your best friend is truly a gift. They say you are the average of your five closest friends – if I am half the woman this duel-business-owner-mom-ofthree is, I’m doing pretty good in life.

MEREDITH REIBER THE DIET DOC MOVEMENT

on BELIEVING AND ACHIEVING: Dream, believe, achieve. I have this written on a bracelet I wear daily to remind me I am capable of all that I dream of accomplishing. My yoga training taught me that when mindset meets movement, profound change can occur. Much of my work as a nutrition consultant and trainer is lifestyle coaching. Diving into our relationship with food, versus the food itself, tends to be the part of one’s diet that needs the most attention. Learning to exercise because we love our bodies, not because we hate them, is what creates sustainable health. w

Meredith Reiber is the co-owner of The Diet Doc Movement with best friend/mentor/previous boss, Alexa Miller. As a personal trainer, yoga instructor, NAMS certified nutrition consultant, and entrepreneur, her intention is to help others discover the healthiest version of themselves through all things movement and nutrition. oxygen

it’s not just for breathing anymore

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is one of the best kept secrets in medicine! HBOT IS A MEDICAL TREATMENT

administered in a chamber in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen under pressure. This treatment produces up to a 15-fold increase in blood oxygen concentration causing oxygen to reach every cell in the body. This stimulates healing in all tissue, including the brain. It is an extremely safe, non-invasive, painless therapy. Initially used to treat divers that were experiencing “the bends” from surfacing too quickly, HBOT has evolved into a therapy for 14 insurance-covered conditions such as treatment of non-healing diabetic wounds, osteomyelitis, radiation injury from cancer therapy such as osteoradionecrosis of the jaw, and radiation cystitis or proctitis, among others. HBOT is supported by research and used in other countries for over 80 conditions. Studies have shown great benefit for those with concussions, traumatic brain injury, autism, stroke, irritable bowel syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many other medical conditions. THESE ARE A FEW OF THE THINGS IT DOES FOR THE BODY: It is a very potent antiinflammatory. It is more potent than steroids. It stimulates the body’s own production of stem cells by 800 percent. It stimulates new blood vessel growth. It stimulates the body’s immune system hence its use to treat bone infections. It acts as a signal inducer of DNA for over 6000 genes, turning on good genes and turning off bad genes.

COSMETIC SURGERY

It is recommended to do one treatment the day before the surgery and 5 to 10 post surgery. This will greatly reduce swelling, bruising, scarring and the chance of infection, all of which result in a better surgical outcome. COGNITIVE AGING

Cognitive function usually peaks around the age of 30 … from there it is a subtle decline. These agerelated declines most commonly include overall slowness in thinking as well as difficulties sustaining attention, problem solving, and multitasking. More than half of those 60 and older express concern about the decline in their cognitive abilities. That decline may unfortunately culminate in dementia. Dementia occurs when the pathological processes (such as Alzheimer’s) ends with significant brain cell death and tissue loss. WHAT IF THERE WAS A TREATMENT THAT COULD REVERSE THIS PROCESS?

Researchers at Tel Aviv University and the Shamir Medical Center led by leading world hyperbaric researcher Dr. Shai Efrati, released a study on November 21, 2020, that demonstrated the ability to do just that. They demonstrated the ability of HBOT to lengthen telomeres by 25 percent. To quote Dr. Efrati: “Telomere shortening is considered the ‘Holy Grail’ of the biology of aging … the significant improvement of telomere length shown during and after these unique HBOT protocols* provides the scientific community with a new foundation of understanding that aging can, indeed be targeted and reversed at the basic cellular-biological level.” w *Please note that the protocol does require 60 consecutive (five days per week) HBOT sessions. DEPRESSION? AS WE FOCUS ON RECOVERIES AND RESTARTS this month, surviving these unprecedented times has brought on other challenges as well—particularly protecting our mental health. Since the pandemic started, The American Psychological Association (APA) states that 8 out of 10 adults say this is the most amount of stress they have encountered in their lifetime … and that takes a large toll on our individual and collective mental health.

We can all relate to feelings of sadness and bad moods, but how do you know if it’s depression or just the blues? According to the APA, if you experience five or more of the following every day for two weeks or longer (and the symptoms interfere with your daily activities), you may have major, or clinical, depression— Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping Sad, anxious, or “empty” mood Thoughts of death or suicide

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

PERHAPS IT’S MY OWN

heightened need for connection after the last 10 months of enforced solitude, or maybe it’s my hope that 2021 will bring positive change that caused me to connect so strongly with this novel’s themes of bone-crushing loneliness and transformation, but Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine really touched me. Eleanor is a young woman who has experienced childhood trauma, moved from one foster home to another, and as an adult struggles to form relationships. The novel is set in Glasgow, Scotland, where Eleanor spends the workweek avoiding her coworkers and her weekends consuming frozen pizza and a lot of vodka. She has no friends, no social skills, and a very limited understanding of social norms and conventions. That doesn’t stop her from believing, however, that she is, as the title states, “completely fine.” Sure,

Eleanor’s rigid routine provides her a means of support and a sense of safety, but that’s about all. With a day-to-day existence that is completely devoid of connection, acceptance, or joy, it doesn’t take the reader long to realize that Eleanor is anything but fine.

own existence is. As a result, Eleanor makes you laugh out loud and breaks your heart at the same time.

What Eleanor lacks in social skills, though, she more than makes up with witty observations about the people and the world around her. In fact, it’s a darn shame her life is so utterly solitary, because the laugh-out-loud inner monologue Eleanor constantly has with herself would liven up any break room office chatter. Unfortunately, though, Eleanor’s coworkers view her (somewhat justifiably) as painfully awkward and bizarre. That’s ok by Eleanor—she simply blames their own stupidity. But sadly, her side-splitting commentary is also quite ironic because, unfortunately, she can’t see how painfully tragic her

Though this book serves as a great reminder of how damaging loneliness and isolation can be, it’s also an example of the human spirit’s amazing resilience. As broken as Eleanor is, she keeps putting herself out there. And though her instinct is to protect herself from life, with the help of a bit of kindness and understanding that comes in the form of a goofy coworker, she manages to open her heart and let others in. There is a twist along the way that explains why Eleanor became so closed off in the first place, but ultimately the ending is a happy one, reminding the reader that it is never too late—for any of us. w

IF YOU ARE UP EARLY AND PASSING BY THE LOVELY ESTATE that encompasses Johnson Carriage House & Meadows in Mooresville, you might catch a glimpse of owner Lillian Johnson out for her five-mile daily walk. Lillian describes this as her meditative time … when ideas come together and creative solutions often present themselves. “I find this is a good time to plan things,” Lillian smiles. “It’s often when I make decisions about the property.” It’s also a great way to stay fit while enjoying those quiet moments before the day’s activities begin. And for Lillian, the activities filling her calendar can be quite extensive.

Moments Mother to three (high school students Sophie and Scarlett and collegiate son Aaron), Lillian, a nurse, is also the practice manager for husband Tony’s dental practice—in addition to operating Johnson Carriage House & Meadows. How does she manage all the tasks that come with those responsibilities plus balance them with her home and family life? “Calendars!” Lillian quickly offers, and explains that being organized is key. And, as it turns out, organization and a strong work ethic were attributes Lillian discovered early in life. “I grew up just outside of Louisville, Kentucky,” she says, “and after high school I joined the Army Reserves and used my GI bill to further my education. It was early in my military career that I earned my veteran status during operation Desert Storm.” One of Lillian’s favorite quotes is, “If you give someone a crutch, they’ll use it.” Lillian and her husband have always tried to instill that in their children, especially Sophie who is special needs. “We must prepare our daughter for the

day when my husband and I aren’t there for her anymore,” Lillian shares. “We’ve always tried to treat her equally. We encourage them all to persevere during difficult times … to know that there is going to be someone out there who will believe in them and give them the opportunity they need. Be strong. Be confident. Never give up on your dreams.” Part of Lillian’s commitment to work-life balance includes reserving Mondays as days off and planning special getaways for the family, as well as strictly observing no work over holidays. “We make sure there are family-only dates on that calendar,” she says. “We have dates set aside for family time here and we also enjoy a great escape to Charleston on a regular basis.” To streamline duties, Lillian has assistants on the estate grounds who help with event preparation as well as guest management. “I have a very talented team here on the premises and a wonderful working relationship with a variety of local vendors.” Lillian is a perfectionist

whose attention to detail and deep commitment to providing an unforgettable, flawless experience for guests has earned the property a sterling reputation. Johnson Carriage House & Meadows is a nationally recognized, award-winning property. But it wasn’t established as such when the property was purchased. It began as a family home and horse farm and serendipitously evolved into a space which others can also enjoy. The idea for hosting weddings on the property came quite unexpectedly while gathering the family for photographs during her husband’s 40th birthday party. The sweeping staircase which graces the home was the natural spot for a group photo. The caterer for the event noticed the choice of backdrop for the photography session and mentioned to Lillian that the home was the perfect setting for photos and the property would be a beautiful wedding venue.

Be strong. Be confident. Never give up on your

dreams.

The idea intrigued Lillian, so when that same caterer contacted her the next year about procuring the property as a wedding venue, she decided to move forward. “I love to entertain,” Lillian says, “and I love hosting events and huge parties. So this was a natural evolution, and it’s an on-going evolution.” Over the years, Lillian has added versatile spaces with an eye towards providing a seamless experience, whether for weddings or other special events. She has also created several entrances to preserve privacy for guests and family. The property includes exquisitely designed buildings evoking Old World charm, including the stable, replete with Pegasus depicted on the vaulted ceiling, and the pavilion which boasts three sparkling chandeliers and a working masonry fireplace. For brides, there is a cottage, affectionately referred to as the “Hen House,” where bridesmaids can manage their wardrobes and makeup. For grooms and their entourage, the stable includes a private suite and lounge with a widescreen TV. In case an outdoor wedding or event needs to be moved indoors, fear not … Lillian’s got a plan! “We can’t control some things and the weather is one of those aspects beyond our control, but we do have solutions so the day can proceed without interruption and with the same excitement.” During a beautiful

wedding on a day punctuated by an on-going deluge of rain, Lillian spontaneously filled a decorative vial with rainwater and presented it to the newlyweds after their ceremony. “I explained that this was a special remembrance of the day – and perhaps they would like to use it when they christen their first child.” That thoughtful, sentimental gesture defines who Lillian is at her core. Intertwined with her cherished roles as wife, mother, and successful businesswoman is a bit of an alchemist: Lillian specializes in creating magical moments that last a lifetime. w

How Infrared Saunas Boost Immunity Infrared saunas induce an artificial fever, raising the body’s core temperature 1-4 degrees for a short amount of time. As the body’s core temperature rises, the body’s immune system responds in some unique ways. While the majority of the cells in our body operate at peak capacity at 98.6°F, our immune cells like phagocytes, killer T cells, antibodies, and white blood cells actually work best at 100104°F. That’s why heat is such an effective way of fighting infectious diseases, most of which are severely weakened at temperatures above 100°F.

HEAT Immune Function An Unbeatable Duo HERE IS A QUESTION FOR YOU: When is your

immune system running at max capacity? Research confirms that your immune system’s performance peaks when your body temperature rises above 102 degrees. That answer might surprise you — especially given how much society fears fevers and rushes to medicate. And it’s the reason that sauna bathing, which creates an artificial fever state, is one of the best things you can do for your immune system. I believe heat bathing is one of the top three most powerful strategies to enhance your health – on par with nutrition and exercise. If there was a pharmaceutical drug that had the same benefits as a sauna, it would be the best-selling drug of all time. Unfortunately, it’s vastly underrated as few people are aware of how powerful it is. Short-term exposure to heat that raises core body temperature is actually our body’s way of creating a state of hormesis, or state of beneficial stress, that helps eliminate true threats, like viruses or other pathogens. Just like the stress of exercise makes our heart and lungs stronger, the stress of heat strengthens our immune system. L K N e x p e rt

Here are a few tips for sauna bathing to help boost immunity: Relax and embrace the heat. While it’s true that most of the cells in our body are optimized at 98.6°F, for most people those cells can easily withstand a core body temperature increase of 1°F-4°F without sustaining damage. On the other hand, viruses and other pathogens are significantly weakened at temperatures above 100°F. Hydrate. During sauna bathing, you’ll be sweating. Make sure you are well-hydrated before and after each session. Keep in mind that all of your cells are most effective when they are hydrated. Work your way up to higher temperatures. I recommend starting at 130°F for up to 30 minutes and working your way up to 45 minutes at a higher temperature. If you’re new to sauna bathing, or dealing with health issues, give yourself plenty of time as you work up to higher temperatures. Talk to your healthcare provider if you’re in a high-risk group. Extensive reviews have found that sauna use is generally well tolerated and safe. However there are a few people who should use a sauna with caution, including anyone who is pregnant, has very low blood pressure, hemophilia, or who has had a recent heart attack. Talk to your healthcare provider before you start sauna bathing if you have any medical concerns. w

MOM-PRENEUR RULE #2

THE

know when to adjust your sails

-PRENEUR E N T R E P R E N E U R I A L S P I R I T — you don’t have to be Lori Greiner to have the dream, the drive, the

grit, the want-to! Female entrepreneurs are making

lasting contributions to the business landscape and

have become an essential part of the U.S. economic health. But what does it take to be a successful

entrepreneur AND run a family? This month we

hear from LKNW Mom-preneur, Dr. Lori Schneider, owner of Lakeside Neurology in Cornelius.

[

MOM-PRENEUR RULE #1

find a work/family balance that is right for you

[

Running your own business is a lot of hard work, but it is also very rewarding. As a mother, the demands of family and work can be overwhelming at times, but I have always appreciated the fact that as a business owner I am able to set my own hours. This was crucial when I was raising my children. Running your own business requires excellent organizational skills. If you have young children, a strong support system is also extremely important.

My husband, JP, and I became empty-nesters this past September when our son, Justin, went off to college at UNC Charlotte. Our daughter, Jessica, also lives in Charlotte. In order to adjust to our new lives and to remain close, we have set aside Sundays as family day. JP and I also now enjoy date nights every weekend … we love taking long walks, riding our bikes, going out to dinner, and watching movies and television series. MOM-PRENEUR RULE #3

pursue your dreams, work hard, and seize opportunities

Since I graduated from medical school, I dreamed of having my own private practice, and I have worked hard to achieve it. In 1994, my husband and I were recruited to this area by Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, and they were instrumental in helping us set up a successful private practice here. We will always feel an incredible debt of gratitude to them.

[

MOM-PRENEUR RULE #4

have faith in yourself … focus on your strengths

I love the autonomy private practice allows me. If I want to add a new service or line of products to my practice, I can immediately incorporate it without having to get permission from a group of administrators. I can spend as much time as I need with my patients without having my time managed by someone else. I have always been great at planning and executing new ideas and problem-solving, and I enjoy overseeing large projects and multitasking—so running my own practice comes pretty naturally to me. I start with a vision and then carefully lay out the steps needed to achieve it. I am very tenacious and do not get discouraged easily … there is always more than one way to tackle a problem. MOM-PRENEUR RULE #5

Dr. Lori Schneider is a board-certified neurologist who is also certified in Medical Acupuncture. She graduated from New York University School of Medicine and completed her Neurology residency at Albert Einstein School of Medicine (Long Island campus). You can schedule an appointment with her at Lakeside Neurology, 191615 Liverpool Parkway, Suite A, Cornelius, 704.896.5591 or visit www.drlorischneider.com.

aloud! family teens your teen, translated MASTERING YOUR EMOTIONS

IT’S

FAULT …

WHAT???

So, how do you master that control? Here are a few suggestions:

HAVE YOU EVER SAID THAT? I know I have … many

times. “You made me _______” --fill in the blank. It could be happy, angry, sad, crazy, confused, feel ugly, feel pretty, feel smart or dumb; any and all of these and many more. You find yourself feeling that you can’t control the thoughts, feelings, and emotions swirling around in your brain, and you find yourself lashing out or maybe feeling helpless. But really, is that true? I’m sure, by this time in your life, you have been told a million times that you are responsible for your actions and the consequences of those actions. Read that again: You are responsible for YOUR actions. Just yours, that magnificent person you see in the mirror. Not those of anyone else. Hmmm… . What does that even mean? I believe that it means that no matter what anyone else says or does, you are responsible for only one thing—and that is your RESPONSE to that thing they do. Of course we all enjoy a compliment and love to get what we want. And, of course, we have all been in arguments or conflicts. We have all felt good, and felt bad, based on what someone else has done or said. But remember, even in situations where you are unhappy with what’s occurring, that you do not have to attend every exchange with another person you’re invited to, and you are the only one in control of you.

• Remember that your thoughts directly cause your feelings and behaviors, not what anyone else does or says. Negative thought patterns can distort your perception of reality, contributing to feelings of stress, anger, and helplessness. Regain your sense of calm by taking back control of your thought patterns. • Stay present. Today is truly all we have. We can never change things from the past or predict things in the future. Find a quiet space to think and focus on the present, become aware of your emotions, and decide the best response to make in stressful situations. • Be kind. Be kind to yourself. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we make one of those terrible knee-jerk reactions. We have all done it. But give yourself grace. Grace to think it through so that the next time your brain will automatically go to the response you would prefer … the healthier, more positive, and productive response. w

THIS MONTH, LKNW CELEBRATES SOUL SISTERS ANN DESPEINES & COURTNEY FERRELL

You reminisce,

POTLUCK ROOMMATES

learn, dance,

Ann and I met in college back in 2007 when we ended up being roommates during our freshman year at Johnson & Wales University - Charlotte Campus. The funny thing is, before meeting each other, we both tried to get out of being roommates. She was a fashion merchandising major from Virginia and I was a sport, entertainment, and event management major from Florida; it seemed we were opposites from the start.

sing, complain, celebrate, play, cry, and dream. Brought together by fate and kept together by love, LIFE AFTER COLLEGE

Soul Sisters are forever yin and yang … from the very first breath to the very last, they have each other’s back.

After college, Ann moved to New York to pursue her fashion career and I moved to the panhandle of Florida to continue my education in graduate school at the University of West Florida. Even though we were over a thousand miles apart, we still found time to catch up with each other and often traveled to see one another. REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO GOOD

A few years after our wedding, Chris and I decided to move back to Charlotte to be near his family as we looked forward to starting a family of our own. I remember telling Ann our plans to find a house and on the same call, she told me Wil was getting a promotion and they were moving back as well! We were both overjoyed to be back in the same city again. Today, Ann and Wil have a 2-year-old little boy named Roman and a new baby girl named Vera. Chris and I have a son named Conrad who just turned one. Our families now both live in Huntersville just eight minutes apart … we are truly blessed. w

I GOT YOU, BABE

Our friendship over the years has grown and morphed as we went through our college party stages, graduations, moving to opposite ends of the east coast, career changes, a business launch, weddings, childbirths, and our return to North Carolina to establish our families. We have encouraged and challenged each other every step of the way. We have been the shoulder to cry on and the one to provide a straightforward kick in the butt to get moving when the other needed it. success story

t

HE FOUNDATION IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE MOST FORMATIVE PART of our life. It often

directs one’s life path—whether you do the opposite of what those basics provided or go along with the seeds that were planted early on. After Summer Tabor earned her bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology from Marshall University, she realized that psychology was not the career path she wanted to take, and her roots were calling her into real estate. “My grandfather built homes and my father, a civil engineer, inspected homes, so I have been immersed in the home industry since I was a child,” she explains.

rooted

Summer grew up in Charleston, West Virginia, where her mother taught her independence, good character, and all about God. “Growing up she always emphasized to me the importance of going to college and being able to support myself in life,” Summer says. “She is my biggest cheerleader. My mom has been through a lot in her life, and I cherish her beyond belief – she is truly one of the smartest people I know.”

SUMMER TABOR LAKE NORMAN REALTY

On the work side of things, Summer was offered the position of broker-in-charge at the Davidson office of Lake Norman Realty back in 2013. “I was ecstatic,” she says. “I knew that Lake Norman Realty had been in business in the area for a very long time, and the brokers they employ had a long tenure with the company. A lot of brokers company-hop in this business, but in 20 years I have worked for just three companies.” Very helpful for both Summer’s work and home life, she and husband Chuck have been studying the Dave Ramsey program, which helps folks to better manage their money and become debt-free. “We have learned invaluable life lessons,” she says. “I wish I had known about this course when I was in my twenties. “Whether you own your own business or work for someone else,” Summer continues, “remember that there will always be low moments in your career … that’s when you have to embrace the work and keeping moving toward those high moments … because they WILL come!” Admittedly, achieving that ever-so-valuable work/family balance can be a challenge at times, but Summer makes it work—being fully present for her 5-year-old daughter, Sophia. “I prioritize my time with her,” she smiles, “and I am there for each and every soccer practice, game, and dance rehearsal.”

I definitely found my roots in real estate, and I am forever grateful.

WORDS matter

Words are magic. They actually change our brain chemistry! As wordsmiths here at LKNW, we are especially fond of words that will resonate with our readers, in hopes they will help guide & inspire you.

At the end of life,

She woke up every morning with the option of being anyone she wished. How beautiful it was that she always chose herself herself. –TYLER KENT WHITE

we spend January 1 st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives…not looking for flaws, but for potential.

for what it’s worth, it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. i hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, i hope you have the strength to start all over again.

MIND body spirit By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nur ture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.

HIT RESTART IN 2021 …

WITH THE POWER OF CHOICE! Living with excess baggage is like driving a dump truck loaded with heavy boulders or a semi packed full of cargo. Unless you raise the bed of the truck and let the boulders fall to the ground, or unpack the semi, you are carrying weight with you wherever you go—which is physically and mentally exhausting. Most women I meet want to be free. Yet, there exists a conundrum for many of them. The process of achieving personal freedom can feel overwhelming and nearly impossible. Somewhere along the way we may have lost sight of ourselves. If our dreams are at the bottom of the pile, along with our own needs and wants, it can feel easier to keep pulling the weight around than to stop, unload, and sift through the rubble.

46

The truth? Living weighted down is not easier. We lie to ourselves when we believe that it is. As long as we do, we will never soar through life with ease. How much better does it sound to feel light as a feather rather than to move through life as a packed-to-the-brim dump truck or semi? Think about what you might accomplish—Think of the peace. Think of the freedom. Think of the power of choice. Dreaming of freedom is one thing … making a conscious decision to pursue it is where the rubber meets the road. The encouraging news is that if we are overloaded, we simply need to make different choices that will help us restart and recover day by day. We capitalize on our power to choose and begin to shed the weight when we make one conscious decision after another to move in the direction of freedom. Therefore, we need not overhaul our lives overnight. Small decisions make the process doable. Hit RESTART on your life by recognizing your ability to choose:

WE CAN elect to use our voices and

decline commitments that interfere with activities or with people we find more important. WE CAN adjust our schedules to

accommodate our own needs and wants. WE CAN redirect our focus. Instead of

traveling through the land of “what could have been,” we can choose a different path. WE CAN address our unhelpful

tendencies, such as the disease to please, that prompt us to add weight to our already cumbersome load. WE CAN adopt a new way of thinking,

one that empowers us to view ourselves as worthy of delving into the pile to uncover our dreams and finally locate ourselves.

Are you following the theme? We CAN make choices that lighten the load and help us to hit restart on our lives. Your choices can exhaust you, or they can free you. Take advantage of your limitless power to choose. Freedom awaits, my friend! w
