T H E D O M I N A N T V I E W O F H A P P I N E S S TO D AY is that we can deal

with the curve balls that life throws at us, and the negative emotions that often come with them, by simply choosing to be happy. Growing up in an age when we didn’t really analyze happiness so much—we mostly just let life unfold and we were either happy, or not, about the result—I wasn’t quite sure what to write about choosing happiness. So I did what people do these days in times of doubt; I looked for advice on the Internet. Following are some of the suggestions I found for “Choose Happy”: “Focus on the positive things in your life”; “Smile more”; “Hold back a complaint”; “Eat a healthy snack”; “Watch funny movies”; “Connect with nature”; and my personal favorite, “Allow yourself just 90 seconds in which to ‘suffer.’ When that time is done, move on to your main goal, which is to be happy for the other 86,310 seconds of the day.” I’m not saying any of the above is bad advice. In fact, I concede that all of those things are a lot better than living your life as a miserable, downtrodden Negative Nancy. But there are times when I am not happy. On occasion when I feel that way, I just want to throw myself a great big pity party. And trust me, healthy snacking is not on my mind. Plus, it’s going to take more than a minute and a half for me to consume an entire bag of Reese’s Cups, eat a gallon of chocolate fudge ice cream, drown my sorrows in a glass (or two) of red wine, and watch “The Fault in Our Stars” repeatedly on mute while listening to my 100 Saddest Songs Ever Recorded playlist. Life can be hard and no matter how much I want to be happy, sometimes, I just can’t be. It is not easy to bounce back immediately from trouble or disappointment, and it’s my belief that sometimes when we are down, we just need to be down and allow ourselves, temporarily, to wallow. Please don’t misunderstand me—I am not anti-happiness. Notice I stressed the word temporarily above. Because if there’s one thing I know for sure and didn’t have to look up on the Internet, it’s “this too shall pass.” And the “choose happy” proponents are right; there are choices we can make so that it will pass faster. When the grease stain on my pillow from my unwashed hair is as big as the chocolate stains on my unwashed t-shirt, I know it’s time to put an end to the pity party and choose happy instead. My turnaround may start with simple things such as celebrating that my dropped toast landed butter-side up or replacing my sad songs playlist with something more upbeat, but when I find reasons to be happy, I do indeed start to feel happier. Before long, I’m even considering that healthy snack option. After all, scientists have confirmed that dark chocolate is beneficial for our health—and Reese’s makes peanut butter cups in dark chocolate. Now that, my friends, friends makes me happy. w

MOM WITH A MISSION I am not a musician, but I own a music school—I know, crazy, right? But I’m just a mom with a mission to provide kids with a fun way to learn to play an instrument, be in a real band, and perform live.

Owner, Elevate Rock School Lake Norman

SPEAKING THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE Music speaks where words, emotions, and thoughts often fail. Put simply, it makes people happy! When the right music plays, people light up—from babies to great-grandparents—their bodies move, their inhibitions drift away, and they go to a happy place.

SUNNY SIDE UP I’m proud of my focus on trying to live happy. I really try to look at the positive side of things and think the best of people. If I feel stressed, I take a few deep breaths to release the negative, and I reflect on whether I’ve done the best I could that day and if my heart has been in the right place. Then I hug my son and my husband for an instant pick me up.

A ROCK N’ ROLL TOT… AND TEEN My son, Brac, who is now 13, has been the driving force behind Elevate Rock School – Lake Norman. He begged for a guitar as soon as he could talk, though I have no idea how or why as we didn’t own any instrument other than a piano I used to plunk away at pathetically. He plays guitar, bass guitar, piano, drums (a little), and sings.

IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME! Brac took lessons at the Elevate Rock School in Fargo, North Dakota, before we moved to Mooresville. I tried different things to get him into music here, but nothing brought back that energy and passion he had while at Elevate Rock School. Then it dawned on me that if he loved it so much, so would other kids, and I could bring this opportunity to them! I could scatter joy through music and put smiles on kids’ faces.

happiness

is healthy!

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE PHRASE

Don’t we all wish it could be that easy! In the midst of work, carpooling, soccer practice, homework, juggling busy schedules, taking care of pets, “happy” does not always feel like a natural emotion. “DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY”?

Overall, I feel “happy” the majority of every single day, but I haven’t always. I love my station in life and all of the chaos and craziness that comes with it, but let’s be honest. We all are human and experience the entire spectrum of emotions throughout our days—not just the blissful, happy feeling we all strive to attain … and maintain! But, do you feel happy when you are woken up for the umpteenth day in a row at 5 a.m. by a toddler after nights where your head didn’t hit the pillow until after midnight? And surprise homework assignments, lunches yet to be made, and other must-do chores have you feeling less than enthusiastic. In those moments where it is challenging to find the happy, we have to dig deep, take a big cleansing breath, and practice gratitude. It is physically impossible to be angry, grumpy, or anything other than happy and peaceful when you approach each situation from a place of gratitude. Have you ever tried?

I share this insight from an amazing experience I had several months ago. My husband and I had a minor misunderstanding one night after the kids had gone to bed (yes, that happens to us on occasion too). I went to my normal “reset spot,” which is the middle of our sloped driveway to sit and take some deep breaths. I was irritated because I felt so misunderstood, and I could not shake it. God somehow cut through my irritation, which led me to pray. I thanked God for all of the things about my husband that I was most grateful for. Immediately, my selfcentered frustration began to melt away. I went back inside, hugged him, and told him I loved him—and I wasn’t forcing it like I stubbornly sometimes do. I’ve applied this “gratitude trick” to numerous situations, and it truly resets my brain to a happy and more peaceful intention. Happiness is a conscious decision. It takes practice and discipline. There is no question, though, that the more intentional you are about consistently choosing happiness, the easier, more frequent, and more natural it becomes. You receive the energy you put out into the universe. So next time you’re feeling especially stressed or unhappy, just kick back, go to your happy space, count your blessings, and smile … the universe will smile back! w

just what the

doctor ordered: Research has shown over and over that happiness is good for your health. In addition to the fact that contentment strengthens your immune system and prevents disease, here are some other healthy tidbits to consider (based on individuals who scored high on happiness and optimism scales)— Happy people are 35 percent less likely to get a cold. Folks who cultivate happiness produce 50 percent more antibodies in response to flu vaccines. They have a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and infections. People who are able to maintain a good sense of humor, an indication of inner happiness, outlive those who do not keep jocularity prominent. Those who score high on the happiness scale also live longer with cancer and/ or are more likely to beat it. One study found that a sense of humor cut a cancer patient’s chance of premature death by up to 70 percent. For more information on the body’s response to happiness, visit www.healthline.com. TIRE ‘EM OUT.

PASS THE TIME. Travel delays are almost inevitable, but games are a fun way to make the time fly while you’re waiting. Whether it’s 20 Questions, a travel version of a popular board game, or a quick game of Go Fish, your child (and you!) will appreciate the distraction.

Z Z

Z

TAKE BREAKS.

Children often travel better when they’re tuckered out and sleepy. If you’re flying, have your child push a small suitcase around the waiting area or ride the escalators with you. If you’re driving, try to leave the house before dawn so you can just scoop up your drowsy child, put her in the car seat, and hit the road.

If you’re driving, try to make regular rest stops so your child can blow off some steam, get some exercise, use the restroom, and/or have a snack.

TAKE A BUS.

ENGAGE THEM. When children are actively involved in something, they are less likely to act out. Talk to your child about the trip and ask her what she’s looking forward to. You can also give her a disposable camera and ask her to document the trip. This will encourage her to observe her surroundings and focus on her interests.

nine tips for

traveling preschooler with your

Traveling can be stressful, period. Add some young children to the mix, and it can be downright challenging. As you hit the road this summer, keep these handy travel tips in mind:

Or the subway or a train or a boat. Children love the novelty of public transportation, so if it’s available at your destination, use it. Large cities, such as New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C., usually have public transportation systems that are fairly inexpensive and easy to use.

SANITIZE. Traveling means coming into contact with more germs than usual, especially if you’re flying to your destination. Be sure to pack plenty of antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer to disinfect your little ones’ hands, especially if they’ve come into contact with the seat-back pockets of airplanes, which can be full of harmful bacteria.

CHECK THE WEATHER. Make sure you pack for any weather conditions you might encounter. You don’t want your child to be too hot or too cold. Extra clothing could add some extra bulk to your luggage but, if the weather changes, you’ll be glad you’re prepared.

STOCK UP.

SURPRISE THEM WITH TREATS.

Bring a stash of toys, snacks, coloring books, crayons, and other goodies to keep your little one from getting bored or hungry during the trip.

While good behavior doesn’t automatically warrant a reward, a piece of candy or a wrapped toy can certainly encourage your child to “keep it up” if he is being particularly pleasant. w

success story

But for Robin, giving up has never been an option. “When you are part of a team, when you have people working for you who have families to provide for, you carry that responsibility. You do whatever it takes to help everyone be successful.” Robin and her husband drew from their savings to keep the business afloat, and to keep every employee on the payroll. When their savings were exhausted, they begged and they borrowed until the economy turned around.

PHOTO: THERESA WENGEL

Work Hard, Be Patient, Never Give Up! If you chose the latter, you already know about Robin Smith Salzman, co-owner of two local dealerships: Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, and Gastonia Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Robin may be the mother of three kids, and the grandmother of eight, but she takes care of her employees like they’re family. While some folks have humanistic maxims stitched on their throw pillows, Robin truly lives by hers, and puts her money where her mouth is.

P O P Q U I Z . When

you hear the word “success,” what kind of person pops up in your mind? Is it a Wall Street tycoon, an Ivy League-educated businessman who learned at his father’s knee how to make a killing in stocks? Or is it a grandmother who drained her savings to save her car dealership, and retain every employee, when the economy tanked?

22

JULY 2019

“A few simple things have guided me in my life and my career,” she says. “Treat people how you want to be treated, and give back more than you take.” Her commitment to this philosophy was tested in 2008, when the financial collapse took its toll on the auto industry. When folks are struggling to pay the rent and put food on the table, buying a new car becomes an impossible luxury. And when cars aren’t selling, it’s tough for car dealership owners to pay their employees. Robin and her husband were faced with some tough decisions.

w OMAN.COM

L A K E NORMAN

“We have been blessed to come back stronger than ever. We’re grateful, now, to give back to our community, and to our employees who helped us make it through a rough time.” The proof is in the pudding: in 2013, five years after the economy collapsed, Robin and her husband were able to add the Gastonia dealership to their flagship in Lake Norman.

The auto industry offers tremendous opportunities for women, from sales to service to accounting. “Women tend to be more detail oriented than men,” Robin says. “This can be helpful when it comes to all the paperwork that comes with purchasing an automobile.” A standout example of a woman succeeding in the auto industry is sales associate Maggie, who recently celebrated her 15th anniversary at the dealership. Maggie is Ram certified; she drives a Ram truck. “Truck sales are the most fun for Maggie,” Robin says. Along with all of the loyal employees at Lake Norman’s and Gastonia’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealerships, Maggie embodies Robin’s prescription for success in automobile sales: “Work hard, become an expert in your product, provide great customer service…and always be respectful of your second family: your coworkers.” w

EASY THING

you' ’ll ever do!

I HAVE THE MIRACLE CURE for whatever ails you and your teen. You don’t have to leave your sofa to get it, and it’s 100% free. You ready? Okay, all you have to do is…listen. No, I’m serious. It’s that easy. But once you tune in to how you listen, you’ll understand how hard it is.

Let’s start with why listening is the magical elixir. I’ll summarize a whole lot of psychological findings with this nugget: as humans, we deeply crave connection with other humans. Feeling connected comes from feeling understood. If you can meet that basic need—if your teen feels that you understand her— everything else becomes happier and smoother.

24

JULY 2019

We feel understood when another person mirrors back the true kernel of what we communicate. Now pay attention, because this is the most vital bit: to catch, and mirror back, that true kernel, the listener has to tune in to what the speaker is saying, as opposed to their own thoughts or interpretations. That’s the tough part.

w OMAN.COM

L A K E NORMAN

If you’re familiar with Buddhism, you’ve heard of the term “monkey mind,” which describes the constant, swinging, chittering movement of our thoughts. Naturally, because our brain is ours, most of our thoughts— science says we have 48.6 of them per minute—focus on ourselves. Our reaction to how something looks. Our experience with a given topic, and whether it’s good or bad. Our hopes and dreams and values. So naturally, when your teen talks, you hear what she’s saying through the lens of your own thoughts. What I’ve learned, through my training and practice as a teen life coach, is that this natural, normal process— hearing others’ words through our own mental filters—tends to backfire, when the goal is building trust with and supporting other people.

that our words made them think about. And we feel…a little bit shunted. A little bit hurt. Maybe a little bit resentful. This is why people spend big money on therapy and coaching: because a welltrained professional knows how to listen without applying a personal filter. They know how to erase themselves from their own brain, and listen purely for what the speaker is saying, with words and tone and body language. When you experience that kind of listening, you feel wonderful: light and accepted and understood and safe. You feel like you are capable of doing whatever is best for you. It’s not easy, this selfless style of listening. It requires a Herculean mental effort to make the monkey mind go dark; to let go of one’s own thoughts. But if you can do it, it will shift your whole dynamic with your teen. It’s the best free fix on the market. w

Here’s why. We yearn to feel understood, right? But when we speak, the listener interprets our words using their mental L K N e x p e rt mold. They respond with suggestions on what they think we should do, or judgements on how they perceive the topic, or stories about their life

There are 2 choices for this room:

What could you use this space for in your home? What if you had a space where you could get away for stress-free fun? What would that look like? Some ideas are: Kids whimsical playroom, a musical or theatrical performance space, a game room, a meditation room, a media room, an office, ‘Sheila’s Indoor She Shed,’ a library, a Man Cave, a craft room, or even an exercise space. The possibilities are endless! The American Journal of Play (Fall 2016) discusses the importance of playtime. Play is often purposeless and demands a suspension of the self-conscious. This is where we find creative solutions, creative inspiration and child-like joy in freedom from our everyday decision fatigue. My best friend tells me she gets this freedom when she exercises. here she is!

How does multitasking bring you joy? I believe that women, in

general, are endowed with the ability to multitask well. We are able to manage time because we are often thrown into this dynamic of multitasking at a young age. It is important for us to use these skills to our advantage and enjoy the ride—making the best use of our time and abilities. On the road a lot? No problem! I just listen to audiobooks that teach me something so I feel like I’m always learning, and then I put that learning into action … that brings positive energy and happiness!

Who are the loves of your life? I have four wonderful children of

whom I am extremely proud. They are Mady (24) who has just been accepted to nursing school; Rob (22) who is a last-semester senior at Western Carolina and a member of the National Guard; McKenzie (18) who has been accepted to Liberty University; and David (16) who is a junior at North Lincoln High School.

What do you want others to know about you? In my business, it is not really about me. People think I sell real estate. I don’t … I sell dreams. The dream of watching their baby take her first steps in the house. The dream of playing football in the backyard. The dream of growing old together. Memories … that is what it’s all about. I have a passion for helping people reach their goals and dreams, and as a real estate professional, I am able to do just that. My family has moved a dozen times in the last 24 years, and I have lived in most of the areas of the Greater Charlotte area which gives me a unique perspective that helps prospective buyers.

When you’re not making dreams come true, what is fun-time for you? We fell in love with the easy, vacation-like way of life here, so we really take advantage of all that Lake Norman offers. Although I would like to travel more—with Scotland, Ireland, Italy, and the Swiss Alps topping my list. I also love horses and incorporate horseback riding whenever I go on vacation. In fact, I used to own an equestrian farm, and my daughter, McKenzie, still has one horse named Bella. w

Lumineers® vs Veneers

Struggling with cosmetic dental concerns can lower your confidence and self-esteem and, in some cases, it makes you consistently hide your smile instead of wearing it proudly. Cosmetic dental procedures like veneers and Lumineers are gaining in popularity due to their ease and affordability over more invasive dental correction procedures. Let’s talk a little bit about what makes each option similar as well as unique:

Both Lumineers and veneers: Improve the look of crooked, misaligned teeth Give you a whiter/ brighter smile Cover cracked or chipped teeth Are made from a thin layer of porcelain Bridge gaps between teeth

Feel comfortable and look natural Are tough and durable Are easy to maintain Won’t stain or change color with time Are custom-made to create a perfect smile Come with similar price ranges

Veneers require some removal

and reshaping of the original tooth (or teeth). Your cosmetic dentist removes enamel to leave enough room for the veneer. As a long-term solution, this permanent removal of enamel may be concerning to some folks, but for specific scenarios it can be precisely what the patient needs to restore their smile. Veneers can usually be applied in two or three visits and can last for 10-15 years.

Lumineers are similar in

function to veneers but the procedure is less invasive. The original tooth is left unchanged and the enamel undamaged. Generally, they’re about the thickness of a contact lens but still strong and durable. This lessinvasive approach to correcting teeth is the reason many patients prefer it over veneers. Finally, Lumineers are quicker to apply than veneers because the teeth are not shaved down before applying the new layer.

Are you considering a smile makeover? A well-trained, cosmetic dentist with the proper credentials and many years of experience placing veneers and Lumineers can listen to your goals, evaluate your teeth, and determine which option is the right choice for you. w WRITER DR. ROBERTO PALMIERI

“treat people right, and the rest will fall into place.”

Before we try to unravel the magic, let’s rewind a bit. Fresh out of college, Dr. Megan Lineberger practiced general dentistry. But looking at what her now-husband Matt, who she’d met in her first year of dental school, was studying in his orthodontic residency, she switched teams. While Dr. Megan is from Michigan, Matt has roots in North Carolina. When the two first started dating, they visited the Lake Norman area, and she fell in love. “I am a total water person, and I love the warmer weather here, as I prefer to spend my time outside.” For a stark

understanding of how much she appreciates our weather, do a Google Image search for the term “Michigan winter.” Yikes! Dr. Claire Fedore, Dr. Megan’s colleague, is also a native of Michigan. The two share their appreciation of the natural beauty of our slice of the map. “I grew up spending winters on Michigan’s Walloon Lake,” Dr. Claire says, “and have always gravitated toward the water. There’s something so peaceful and majestic about viewing the sun setting over the lake.” Her father a dentist, Dr. Claire was exposed to

dentistry at an early age. In fact, it was sort of a given that she would join her father’s practice after dental school. But Dr. Claire also discovered the specialty field of orthodontics and immediately knew it was the right fit for her. But back to Dr. Megan, Dr. Claire, and Dr. Matthew because there’s more happy kismet in that bit of the story. The three met when they were all studying at the University of Michigan. “I remember meeting Claire in an interview,” Dr. Megan says, “and I really liked her personality. Three years later she reconnected with us in North Carolina.” I mean, there’s coincidence, and then there’s fate. I think we can agree on which one is happening here. Maybe that’s what’s at the root of Lineberger Orthodontics’ magic: the practice was written in the

lenses. The struggle, they admit, is real. Describing the challenge of starting and running a business with her husband, Dr. Megan says, “Marriage is hard enough. Raising children together, then adding the stress and pressure of a business on top of it…it’s no joke!” Dr. Claire, in turn, describes the

stars. Or maybe it’s the massage chairs. The I-pads. The Starbucks coffee. The giant Jenga. Or, nope. It’s the fresh-baked cookies. That’s the draw. But then again, maybe not. Maybe it’s the stuff the patients can’t see, hear, feel, taste, or smell. Like the fact that Dr. Megan and Dr. Matthew discussed their vision for the practice during long conversations throughout dental school. Or the mutual respect the doctors have for each other, with a flow Dr. Megan describes like this: “We all know our individual strengths and have naturally fallen into our roles.” Or the fact that they operate with guiding principles that balance hard work with respect for others. When asked what her favorite quote is, Dr. Megan offers a line she learned from her late

grandfather, who owned a family business in Flint, Michigan: “Treat people right, and the rest will fall into place.” Meanwhile Dr. Claire summed up her driving force like this: “It is important to me to do everything in my power to provide the best care. That continually keeps me motivated … to never stop learning and improving.” At Lineberger Orthodontics, these principles are not mere words. They are bona fide action. “We have the perfect platform to give back,” Dr. Megan says. One way they do so is through their Stats 4 Smiles program, wherein they’ve teamed up with professional athletes to deliver free orthodontic care to kids and adults who could not otherwise afford treatment. But don’t let all this goodness lure you into thinking the doctors see their lives through rose-colored

difficulty of moving away from her family in Michigan. “There was an expectation that I would work with my father after dental school, so moving away felt like I was letting down the individuals who are most important to me.” That’s it! That’s the final ingredient in the magical recipe that produces a most lovely blend of happiness, success, and gratitude. Down to the tiniest detail, these guys are fun and they spread the love. They are family. They connected from the start, and stayed together to build the dream. They’re perfectionistic; they’re respectful. And they admit that it’s not always easy. So yeah. CONNECT WITH LAKE NORMAN WOMEN & LKNW

Aren’t those words music to your ears? I think as women, we aren’t asked that question nearly enough—or maybe someone has asked, but we were just too darn busy trying to meet everyone else’s needs that we didn’t hear.

Here aatt LKNW,

the staff has been thinking about what we need more of in our lives. Although we’re at different stages in our journey, all of us at the magazine are masters at multitasking and pretending like we have all that we juggle under control. We are caregivers, housekeepers, bookkeepers, laundresses, chauffeurs, short-order cooks, handy women, decorators, nurses, personal shoppers, teachers, administrators, accountants, go-getters, maintenance workers, designers, landscapers, seamstresses, zoo keepers, and more—and that’s when we’re not working! But still, even with all of that, each of us felt like there was something missing. After some collective soul searching, we realized that we were all longing for more of the same things: more connection, more support, more comradery, and more fun. Then we thought of you, dear readers, and considered that if we feel this way, perhaps you do too? So we began brainstorming about how we

could get those things—for all of us. We have a vision in mind, a vision for a place where like-hearted women will keep each other strong, authentic, empowered, laughing, loved, and inspired. But before we dish out the details, we’d like to hear from you! We believe you‘re the best to guide us through the planning process. We want this community to lift you up and cheer you on, so tell us…what do you want and need in your life? Let us know your thoughts on that question and a few more by going to https://www. surveymonkey.com/r/QYWV73Q and filling out a brief survey. In the wake of spring cleaning, stores often have more selection during summer months; all of a sudden those cute new additions to your wardrobe seem more affordable. With everyone spending time outdoors, gym attendance is a bit on the sparse side. Look for gyms to discount memberships and even offer special perks.

Home goods such as appliances, furniture, and décor are also on sale much of the summer—most folks are spending money on outdoor fun. we’re gonna need a bigger boat …

But don’t be afraid!

WHILE RESEARCH CONFIRMS THAT

are indeed on the rise, the chances of actually being bitten are virtually non-existent. It’s just that more people are surfing and swimming and enjoying our oceans—so from Cape Cod to the Carolinas, we are hearing the news and, understandably, it sends shockwaves. But, in reality, we should be more worried about what humans are doing to sharks. Many are facing extinction, including the tiger, nurse, and whale shark. According to the National Geographic Society, humans kill approximately 100 million sharks a year and that is a very conservative estimate. If sharks were to die out, there would be devastating effects on the maritime ecosystem and our planet in general. We must respect and protect these often-misunderstood fish. In the meantime, here are some facts and tips about sharks: SHARK ATTACKS

46

JULY 2019

w OMAN.COM

L AK ENORMAN

You are more likely to be struck by lightning, make a hole-in-one as an amateur golfer, or win the Powerball Jackpot than to be bitten by a shark.

It is safer to swim in groups because sharks are more likely to attack lone swimmers. If you are attacked, pound them on the nose and head.

Most shark attacks occur in shallow water close to the shore.

Sharks have a keen ability to sense blood, so never go into the water with a wound of any kind. Sharks can smell one drop of blood in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

In 2008, a polar bear jaw was found in the stomach of a Greenland shark—wow! The Shark Attack Capital of the World is New Smyrna Beach in Florida. If you have swum at this beach, you have likely been within 10 feet of a shark. Sharks hang out in estuaries, inlets, and in steep drop-off pools, so avoid these areas. Also avoid excessive splashing and horseplay; it is believed that sharks are attracted to such activity, assuming it is wounded prey and thus an easy meal.

Leave your shiny, sparkly, bright-colored jewelry/clothing/ etc. on the beach. In the water, say experts, sharks see glistening and assume it is fish scales, ie, dinner! Shark attacks are almost exclusively a case of mistaken identity. They bite, realize you are not on their menu, and then retreat. w

YOUR

epidermis

IS SHOWING!

The importance of our skin as it relates to breast health and your lymphatic system

fifteen years ago what the most important job of our skin was, I’d have said its barrier to water and infection, and I would have been correct. But, if you’d asked me to expand on the ways the skin provides protection, I would have drawn a blank. At that time, I specialized in orthopedic and sports physical therapy, concentrating on what is just below the skin: muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and nerves. Other than an occasional friction massage over a postoperative incision, I did not give it much notice. A few years later, this all changed. I F YO U H A D A S K E D M E

Eighty percent of our lymphatic system lies just under the top layer of our skin, the epidermis, and above the deepest layer of our skin, the hypodermis or superficial fascia. These vessels, if damaged, can affect lymphatic drainage. If lymph flow is unable to return to normal, it can lead to lymphedema, which is irreversible. Damage or disruption to the superficial lymph vessels is caused by many things: surgery, compression, cuts, blunt trauma, infection, radiation, and cardiovascular disease, to name a few. My passion is to educate people on the importance of their skin, specifically the lymphatic and fascial systems, in order to improve overall wellness and prevent disease. Here are some things to consider: LYMPHATIC DRY BRUSHING. This

stimulates the superficial lymph vessels and exfoliates the skin. Be sure to use a natural bristle brush and gently brush towards the heart. Perform each day before getting in the shower or tub.

LYMPHATIC BREAST MASSAGE. This gentle massage helps clear lymphatic channels, increases circulation, and reduces uncomfortable congestion. Perform each day while in the shower. WEARING BRAS. Try to go bra-free as often as possible.

Constriction of breast tissue increases inflammation and inflammation, if chronic, can lead to disease. Decreasing the constant compression enhances breast health through improved lymph flow. I understand many women are concerned with drooping breasts; however, research shows that bras do not

48

prevent breasts from sagging. Sagging of breast tissue is caused when the Coopers Ligaments are stretched through significant weight gain/loss, multiple child births, and impact activity without proper support. LYMPHATIC MASSAGE. Lymphatic massage involves a series of special strokes used to move the lymph towards the heart and back into the venous system. Manual lymphatic drainage (massage) is beneficial for several conditions: chronic pain, swelling or edema, skin disorders, fatigue, insomnia, stress, digestive problems, arthritis, headaches. HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR FASCIA. The most important thing you can do to keep your fascia healthy is to drink water! Remember, fascia wraps around the muscle allowing muscles to glide against each other. When fascia around the bundles and fibers gets “sticky,” muscle strains occur. When this happens, do NOT ice! Allow the body to heal itself during the acute phase, 10-14 days. During this time, gentle myofascial massage and passive stretching is beneficial to assist with realigning the muscle fibers. w L K N e x p e rt

Laura’s brother and family had made the move to Mooresville from Chicago and, after several visits, Laura and husband Trey, a general contractor, decided to trade the New York City suburbs for a quieter Lake Norman community. “Like many of the people who have moved here, we came for a better way of life,” says Laura. However, Laura says that she has found the balance that she was never able to achieve in NYC. “I’m able to make my own hours and structure my time around my family’s needs,” she smiles, “and I also finally gave up on expecting myself to be able to do everything that needs to be done!” Laura says that after nearly drowning under work and housework for several months, she finally decided to hire someone to help with the simple chores around the house. This allowed her to focus her energy on the two most important things – her family and their business. “Knowing how and where to delegate work is very important – it’s nearly impossible to run a successful business, raise children, do housework, and still have any time for yourself,” she relates. There have been moments when the pressure has been exhausting, but Laura has yet to give up, and states, “I’m an optimist and I have a long-term vision – that is what keeps me going every day.” w WRITER MICHELLE LOVE

BETTER ME … BETTER YOU … BETTER WORLD

MIND body SPIRIT

By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nurture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.

happiness IS A CHOICE … 1 AND IT REQUIRES EFFORT AT TIMES! “HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE THAT REQUIRES EFFORT AT TIMES.” Those words belong to the ancient Greek

playwright, Aeschylus, the Father of Tragedy.

Yep. The guy known for his sweepingly tortuous tales of death penned words about happiness being something we choose. It’s funny to think of happiness like that — as if it’s the same as choosing which sweater to wear, or tea to drink. It got me thinking that by choosing to be happy, we take ownership of it. Happiness is ours to savor, to nurture, to — if we let it — blossom. Pursuing happiness takes courage, patience, and lots and lots of work. Most of my early morning wake-ups leave me craving a few more slaps of the snooze button — not a cheery smile and a can-do attitude. But I also know that happiness isn’t just about grins and a “go get ‘em!” attitude. It’s knowing we have the ability to change our life. If this seems crazy-hard, remember another famous saying by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” w Lindsay Martell is a writer and voiceover actor. THESE ARE MY FAVORITE STEPS TO TAKE, ESPECIALLY ON THE DAYS WHEN “CHOOSING HAPPY” SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE:

Before you flick off your light at night, say, “Tomorrow will be a good day,” and smile (even if you don’t feel like it). Putting those words into the universe gives them power. Let those words distill overnight, and become your mantra.

Take 20 minutes to do each of these three things:

- Try a new exercise. If you already hit the gym, run, or cycle on a regular basis, take another 20 minutes to do yoga (you’ll find scores of short yoga mini workouts on YouTube) or stretch. Try tai chi, cardio barre, ballet fitness, or old school low-impact aerobics. You’ll be amazed by how energized you’ll feel after moving your body in a new, dynamic way. - Tackle one digital chore you’ve been avoiding. We all have that e-clutter that sits on our devices, taunting us with its heft and unruliness. Time to purge those duplicate photos, recipes you’ll never make, and apps you rarely visit. Spending just 20 minutes a day weeding out is a powerful way to clear your head. - Prep healthy food. In under 30 minutes, you can rinse, slice, and chop enough healthy fruits and veggies to last you and your family a week. Nothing fuels happiness more than happy bodies.

3

Give yourself a break. Women try to do it all. We juggle family, work, relationships, and commitments while appearing effortlessly put-together and cheery. If doing so is causing you to want to crawl back under the covers every day, it’s time to stop. Perfection isn’t real. Choosing positivity means embracing the good and the less-than good — celebrating the little things that add up to the kind of women we strive to be: imperfectly happy.
