I GET VACATION ENVY.

Especially when I see social media photos of friends sailing away to a place where they can frolic in crystal clear waters while sipping something right out of a coconut. And though I know green-eyed monsterness is not typically a trait one aspires to, I simply can’t help myself—I wish that it was me who was doing the frolicking and the sipping.

But the opposite happened to me recently when a friend posted photos of her week-long trip to Disney. I didn’t feel the least bit jealous. In fact, because I had found the Magical Kingdom not quite as magical as anticipated in a previous experience, I’m quite sure I would rather lick a monster’s face every day for a week than go on that vacation.

In all fairness, my aversion isn’t Disney’s fault. It’s a mob of teenage dancers that is to blame. Well…if I’m being honest, that’s not fair either. e lack of magicalness was actually due to raging teenage hormones, and the hormones in question weren’t those of the dancers…they belonged to my then 17-year-old twin sons.

We were coming out of a rough couple of years, and this was our “We might make it through your teenage years alive” trip. Nowhere seemed more tting for this adventure than to “sail away” to the happiest place on earth. To maximize the happiness, I had mapped out a strategy and splurged on advance tickets. e plan for day one was to check in, change into our matching t-shirts, and jump on a trolley to our rst park. Let the magic begin!

e magic didn’t show up at check-in though; we stood in line nearly two hours. e magic was still nowhere to

be found as we lugged our suitcases across the expansive property in a torrential downpour in search of our room— which we couldn’t nd. We did nd the pool though. And that’s when the magic did show up, if not for me, certainly for my sons—or at least those hormones of theirs. I saw the look of elation on their faces before I saw what awaited us on the deck of the pool (and in the hot tubs and in the pool itself)—hundreds of bikini-clad teenage girls who were at the hotel for a weeklong dance competition. My boys had indeed stumbled upon the happiest place on earth.

And so they never left the hotel—or at least not willingly. And while I’m sure every one of those girls was as delightful as a Disney princess, serving as pool monitor for the majority of my vacation wasn’t all that magical for me. It just goes to show that when you set sail, you never know what the tide is going to bring. Sure, it can bring a pool so packed with a horde of teenage bodies that there’s no room to dip even one middle-aged toe, or it can bring in something fantastical (like a pool packed with a horde of teenage bodies). So take a chance this summer and set your sails…I promise I’ll only turn a little green if the tide brings you some of that frolicking and coconut sipping! w

REV. Jetton Etheleen

on HER NORTH CAROLINA ROOTS: I was born in Charlotte and raised in Mt. Vernon, New York. I lived in the suburbs of New York City for over 22 years before moving back to North Carolina. Although I consider myself a Carolinian, I will always have fond memories of my years up north.

on BEING BLESSED AND HAVING FAITH: My absolute favorite quote is, “I was made to praise Him.” These are the words that guide me. Faith has always been the path I have followed and, in 2007 I accepted my calling and became an ordained minister. I served on the Town of Davidson Board where I advocated for families for several years. My own family is also a passion of mine … I am so proud of them. My husband Danny is my rock, and we have three grown sons who live in Charlotte — Danny Jr., Joey, and Kristopher. They bring me so much joy!

on LENDING A HAND AND HELPING

OTHERS HEAL: In 2006, I founded Arms Wide Open Ministries International, a 501(c) non-profit. Our vision is to see multicultural and multi-racial communities bind with all different types of churches to help and encourage those in need to further the kingdom of God. I firmly believe that our lives can continually and spiritually grow and change with the Lord’s love. I want to be a part of that as much as I possibly can.

on EMBRACING THE BEAUTY WITHIN: When I was 16, I began losing my hair. That is a really tough age to go through something like that — being a teenager is hard enough! I was ultimately diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, and since that time I’ve taken steps to remind myself (and others) that real beauty is what’s inside. The year I became a minister, I started writing my book, “God, I Am Not My Hair.” Now, I’m all about empowerment and showing others who are struggling that if I got through this, they can too. w

Did You Know?

Happy of July!!4 th

As we all learned in grade school, the Fourth of July commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence. While the legal separation of the thirteen colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, the signing was not until days later (historians still debate the actual date). Part of the Committee of Five who prepared the document, John Adams wrote: “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” w

How did your parents influence your careers?

DR. LEMBO: We were very close to our dad. He owned a dental practice for 40 years in Michigan, and our mother was a hygienist. They both instilled in us a respect for health and how important it is to take care of your teeth. We feel blessed to be following in their footsteps.

DR. MONTGOMERY: Our path to success has not always been a straight one, but we have been able to learn and grow from the tough situations thanks to what our parents taught us. Change is inevitable so how you react and adjust will determine whether you sink or swim.

Lembo

What else has fueled your professional lives?

DR. LEMBO: Before Lindsay and I went into business together, I had my own dental practice in Michigan for many years. Although my dream was to work with my sister, it was a hugely satisfying experience to have my own successful practice.

DR. MONTGOMERY: I would have to say my military service. I proudly served in the United States Navy as a general dentist at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. I was also deployed overseas in Operation Iraqi Freedom providing dental care to military personnel. It was some of the most challenging work I’ve ever done, but I learned so much about myself. It was incredibly rewarding.

Talk to us about the strong work family you have created.

DR. LEMBO: We’ve been in practice for over 12 years now ... it has gone by so fast, but the journey of it all has been amazing. We have a great group of women who bring a positive attitude to work every day—which lifts all our spirits!

DR. MONTGOMERY: We are eternally grateful for everyone on our team who makes it happen … team members who are not only committed to the practice, but to a high level of achievement and to our common goal and motto: Happy team, happy patients!

DR. LINDSAY

Speaking of awesome people, tell us a bit about your homelife.

DR. LEMBO: My husband, Joe, and I have been married for over 22 years and we have two children: Joey is 15 years old and an amazing athlete. He loves football and recently got his permit to drive. Isabel is 13 years old and is also an outstanding athlete. She is quite the defender on the soccer field. She always says, “soccer is my life,” and we appreciate her enthusiasm.

DR. MONTGOMERY: Married for almost 17 years now, my husband Darren and I have a daughter, Coralyn, who is 9 years old and enjoys math on every angle. She is rapidly rising up in the belt levels of Tae Kwon Do at R.T. Berry School here in Mooresville—having just recently earned her green stripe belt. This is giving her confidence and focus, especially in school and with making new friends. w

the SCOOP on

lakeside

living

THERE'S SOMETHING UNDENIABLY enchanting about lake living - an idyllic retreat where time seems to slow down, and every moment is steeped in serenity. Nestled amidst nature's embrace, the tranquil waters and breathtaking views o er a respite from the chaos of everyday life.

But what's lake living without a generous scoop of ice cream? ere is nothing better than celebrating life’s little pleasures, such as indulging in a sweet treat near the water's edge.

Your home was most likely built to consider the water views from a perch such as a barstool—a place where you can observe and engage in lively conversations. e barstool has become the stage for a microcosm of lake living’s vibrant tapestry.

Lake living is not just about picturesque views or leisurely activities. It's about the intangible moments of connectiona shared laugh, a stolen glance, a heart-to-heart conversation as the stars twinkle above.

So, whether you nd yourself captivated by the allure of lake living, indulging in a scoop of ice cream, or debating life's mysteries from the comfort of a barstool, channel your youthful exuberance and indulge in some playful design.

To enhance this idyllic setting, bring the essence of the lake indoors through your interior design choices. Incorporate soft and serene color palettes inspired by the surrounding landscape: blues reminiscent of the shimmering water, sandy neutrals reminiscent of the beach, and greens reminiscent of the lush foliage. Let the colors transport you to a state of blissful calm every time you step inside. But please leave the “At the Lake” signs on the store shelves. Look to add the feeling of the scenery, not the directional signs of a kitschy cluttered beach house décor.

Embrace the lusciousness of ice cream by incorporating fabrics and textures that mimic its delightful qualities. ink plush velvet cushions in avors like chocolate, strawberry, or mint chip. Indulge in the velvety smoothness of an ice cream sundae-inspired area rug underfoot, complete with sprinkles and whipped cream motifs, i.e., beautiful trims and draperies. ese playful elements add a touch of whimsy to your lakeside abode, turning it into a truly sweet escape.

Who doesn’t want to live in an ice cream parlor by the lake? w

Tending to TOOTH Injuries

SUMMERTIME BRINGS LOTS OF OUTDOOR FUN and adventure, but it also brings the opportunity for more accidents. Dental injuries often occur as a result of sports, falls, and even water activities. Some of them are minor, but what happens when there is a hard hit and a lot of bleeding involved? What if a tooth is knocked loose or completely out? What is the right thing to do?

Knocked Out Out Of Place

If someone falls or gets hit in the mouth with enough force, the entire tooth (including the root) can be knocked out of the socket. is whole tooth is about twice the length of what is normally visible in the mouth—about 1 inch long. ere will be a visible hole (bleeding) in the gums. When this happens, the nerves and blood vessels will be damaged, but it is possible to reposition and save the tooth. e odds of saving a tooth are highest in children but very possible in adults, too, if swift action is taken upon injury:

1 Find the tooth. Hold it by the crown (chewing end) and try to avoid touching or wiping the root, as this surface contains vital cells that aid in reattachment. If dirty, water can be gently poured to rinse off, but caution should be used to handle as little as possible.

If a tooth cannot be found after being knocked out, it is important to control the bleeding of the gums by placing pressure on the socket with a napkin or gauze.

2 Put the tooth back in the socket. This is the best option for the tooth when possible. Be sure to orient the tooth in the proper direction and insert without using too much force. Hold or bite in place with a napkin until a dental professional can take over.

If the tooth cannot be clearly and easily reinserted, it is important to keep it moist by placing in a cup of milk, saline, or in the mouth next to the cheek. Avoid tap water, which can cause the root cells to swell and burst.

If a child knocks out a baby tooth, the tooth should not be reinserted, as this could damage the adult tooth growing underneath.

3 Call a dentist immediately. The sooner a tooth is reimplanted and stabilized, the better the chance the tooth will reattach permanently.

After an injury, a tooth may not be completely knocked out, but can be pushed back, forward, or upward into the gum. When this occurs, a dentist should be called immediately, as the tooth root or socket could be fractured. An x-ray and exam can determine the presence of any fractures and help determine the course of action. Loose and displaced teeth can be repositioned and stabilized with a splint for up to two weeks or longer if a bone fracture is noted. w

TENACITY. COURAGE. ENDURANCE. These are just a few of the words that come to mind when you meet Erin Ficenec, a top realtor at the North Shore office of Ivester Jackson | Christie's.

Wi

Step

EEarly in her professional life, Erin was an analyst for Bank of America in the line of business known back then as “corporate workplace”—which was in fact their corporate real estate division. Raising young kids with two working parents became a bit daunting at the time so Erin made the decision to become a stay-at-home mom.

She and husband Mike have four children (Skyla, Zack, Joseph, and Kate) who are now 19, 17, 16, and 11 respectively.

“I considered it a gift,” Erin explains, “to have been able to stay home with my children for a good 10 years before returning to the workforce. When our youngest daughter was in third grade, I felt the timing was right for me to follow my heart and start my new career in residential real estate.”

Having waited decades to fully pursue her career, Erin received her real estate license just before the pandemic began. Since then, she has grown her business exponentially by consistently being a top producer in her rm—earning her the prestigious designation as a Luxury Home Marketing Specialist Guild Recipient.

“I have always loved residential real estate,” she continues. “I remember house hunting with my parents when they were moving to South Florida. ey still recall how

StrengIN EVERY lakenormanwoman.com . JULY 2023 27

opinionated and insightful I was during their home search, even at a young age … this was the reason I chose to take real estate nance courses in college.”

Although Erin was born in Cooperstown, New York, her family moved to Lake Worth, Florida, when she was 6. She graduated from high school there and attended the University of Central Florida where she studied business administration with a concentration in nance, grooming her well for her chosen profession.

“It is such a joy to work with buyers and sellers on their next exciting journey,” she smiles. “My clients welcome me in as an honorary family member, and I can’t imagine a better blessing than that! One of my favorite things is when I see clients on social media celebrating special moments in their new home—how rewarding it is to watch them welcome a new baby, host birthday parties, or put up that rst Christmas tree. I feel a tremendous sense of pride knowing I was there when it all began.”

Firmly grounded in gratitude, Erin has a unique perspective and takes nothing for granted. Challenged mightily to overcome innumerable odds, her world drastically changed one October night, just shy of her 21st birthday. While returning to campus after visiting her parents, Erin was involved in a devastating car accident. e SUV she was driving had a tire blowout and the vehicle ipped several times, hitting numerous trees, before landing upright in a marsh on the side of I-95 in Florida.

“It was about 9:00 p.m.,” she recalls, “and it was very dark outside. I woke from a concussion to nd large chunks of glass in my left foot. I was pinned under my dashboard and tried many times to move my seat, but it was stuck. I sat there, wondering if anyone had seen my accident. I did not have a cell phone to call for help (it was the year 2000 after all), but luckily a good Samaritan stopped and came to my aid. Police and rescue arrived very quickly and even had to shut down I-95 so they could use the “jaws of life” to remove me from the vehicle. e rescue personnel warned me that the process of getting me unstuck would be very painful. What I didn’t know is that they were going to have to break my leg … I can’t describe the pain in words! I was airlifted to the nearest hospital and underwent

nine hours of surgery, which resulted in a titanium rod being placed in my right leg. e doctors told me that they weren’t sure if I would ever walk again.”

After undergoing months of rehabilitation, Erin was adjusting to her “new normal” and spent her 21st birthday in a wheelchair. With a lot of faith, tenacity, courage, and endurance, Erin knew that she would walk again, despite what the doctors had said. By February of 2001, she was walking with the help of crutches and kept pushing ahead until a few years later when she was not only able to walk without assistance, but she started running again. Much to her delight, Erin was able to exercise and run throughout all her pregnancies. Eventually the titanium rod was removed, and today she regularly enjoys Pilates and yoga. She even ran a half-marathon without any pain.

“I have carried a ghter mentality throughout my life because I understand what it is like to come back from a near-death experience. I live life to the fullest. Each day is di erent from the last, but I strive to be at my best by being grateful for everything, big or small, and handling challenges with grace … and with strength in every step.” w

Home Staging T HE Bene ts OF

especially in a competitive market. As an experienced real estate agent, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of home staging. Sellers that invest in staging benefit by elevating their property’s appeal, attracting more buyers, and ultimately securing a faster sale at a price that exceeds their expectations.

SELLING A HOME CAN BE AN EXCITING YET CHALLENGING PROCESS,

Enhancing First Impressions

ey say you never get a second chance to make a rst impression, and this holds true when it comes to selling a home. Staging allows you to showcase your property’s full potential, creating an immediate wow factor that captivates prospective buyers. With strategically placed furniture, tasteful décor, and appealing color schemes, staging transforms an empty or cluttered space into a welcoming and inviting environment. ese rst impressions are crucial in capturing buyers’ attention and ensuring they envision themselves living in your home.

Highlighting Key Features

Every home has its unique selling points, and staging helps accentuate these features. Professional stagers have a keen eye for arranging furniture and décor to draw attention to architectural details such as a cozy replace, elegant crown molding, or stunning panoramic views. Expertly highlighting these attractive aspects through staging allows buyers to recognize the full bene ts of your property.

Creating a Sense of Space

In the realm of real estate, space sells. Staging helps maximize the perceived square footage of your home by utilizing appropriate furniture and layout techniques. By eliminating clutter, organizing belongings, and strategically arranging furniture, staging creates a sense of spaciousness and ow throughout the property. Buyers are often drawn to homes that feel open and airy, as it gives them a blank canvas to envision their own furniture and personal touches. e perception of space not only increases buyer interest but also allows for better-quality photographs, attracting more online attention.

A Competitive Edge

In today’s competitive market, staging can provide a distinct advantage. Staged homes stand out among the sea of listings, making a memorable impression on potential buyers. With online platforms playing a vital role in the home search process, staging helps your property shine in photographs and virtual tours, enticing buyers to schedule in-person visits. Furthermore, staged homes often receive more o ers and tend to sell faster than their nonstaged counterparts.

Staging has become an indispensable tool for maximizing a home’s appeal and sale potential. So, if you want to sell your home faster and for top dollar, consider the benefits of staging as an invaluable investment in your selling strategy. w

spoiler alert:

MEN AND WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT. Ok, so maybe that fact didn’t really surprise you. After all, it’s been 28 years since John Gray popularized the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. And as much as we love sharing women’s stories, we decided it was time to lend the Martians of LKN our ear, too. This month we share the perspectives of Mike Griffin of Leavitt Elite Insurance Group.

ENJOYING THE RIDE

I’m very proud of my family and my marriage to Cindy. We have a great relationship! We have been fortunate to travel several times a year, and our favorite places include any of the islands in the Caribbean and several European countries, including Spain and Portugal. I love outdoor sports and like to hit the links whenever I can. Now that our children (Rob, Meredyth, and Courtney) are grown, we value life’s simple pleasures— watching our children succeed, getting together with friends, and enjoying all that the lake life has to o er.

MOM & DAD

BUSINESS PRIDE

Now doing business as Leavitt Insurance Group, a change in name only, our Gri n team continues to provide elite coverage for our Lake Norman neighbors. My goals and e orts remain the same: to be a trusted insurance advisor and leader for our experienced group of agents. We all feel it is a great responsibility and an honor to serve our clients by providing them with the correct insurance products to protect their needs at a fair price. When we say, “we’re family,” we mean it!

KEEPING A “FINS UP” ATTITUDE

I am the eternal optimist, always seeing the glass half full. is has been instilled in our agency team members. ey have learned to bring me solutions and not problems. An attitude of gratitude and an acceptance of what is challenging you at the moment will provide you with the necessary tools to problem-solve … no time to waste spinning your wheels—remain positive, focused, and nd practical solutions that will help you move forward.

EACH DAY IS A GIFT

Much of my entrepreneurial spirit I learned from my dad. He was an HVAC contractor and was very instrumental in showing me how to run and grow my own business. He started his own business when I was about 10, and I observed his marketing approach and how he connected with people. My Mom taught me to always see the best in others and to treat them the way I would want to be treated. Everyone is important and whatever problems they are having are as signi cant to them as anything that I am experiencing.

I was in a gas explosion when I was 23 and su ered burns over 85 percent of my body. Spending several weeks bedridden gives you a lot of time to think about life, especially about your faith and what your real purpose might be. I hope, and like to believe, it made me a better, stronger person. I try to practice what I preach and that is to be kind and patient with others, always give them a chance, and be humble in your successes. w

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN 1955, this New York Times bestseller gives readers a front row seat to the exceptional life of Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) from the perspective of his longtime friend and travel companion, A.E. Hotchner, or simply “Hotch” as Hemingway so a ectionately dubbed him. Hemingway loved nicknames and had them for those who were in his orbit; while no one knows exactly where the moniker came from, Hemingway preferred to be called “Papa” by those closest to him.

With some background needed for clarity’s sake and for those unfamiliar, Hotchner lls us in on the gregariousness, grandiosity, and largerthan-life public image that brought Hemingway so much admiration, accolades, and over-the-top adversity. Setting Your Sails for ACTIVE LISTENING

AS YOU SAIL THROUGH summer do you feel as though there is too much wind in your sails? Are you moving through life so quickly that you feel as though you are rarely present in conversations at work, with your friends, or with family? Are you focused and engaged on the present or distracted and mentally absent? Being present in conversation shows respect and lets the speaker know that you are interested and that they are truly being heard.

When was the last time you spoke with someone and received a limited response or grunt that indicated they were far from actively listening to your one-sided conversation?

When was the last time that

you weren’t present when someone was speaking to you? My guess is you don’t have to think back much farther than yesterday to nd examples to answer both questions.

Do you want to break the habit of passively listening (not really paying attention to what is being said) and set your sails for slowing down and practicing active listening? Do you want to build stronger relationships? Listening involves using your ears as well as your eyes to observe body language. I coach online rather than by phone because active listening requires taking in verbal cues to ensure better interpretation and communication.

There are eight steps you can take today to be present in conversations and deepen your relationships:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Stop, take a breath, and give your brain a few seconds to slow down.

Put down the cell phone or tablet, no multitasking.

Make eye contact with the speaker.

Pay attention to body language.

Repeat #1–Stop, take a breath, bring back the wandering brain.

Be curious.

Ask questions.

Being present through active listening will allow you to have clear communication, deeper relationships, resolve con icts, and build trust. Set your sails this summer for smooth sailing and engaged conversations with your Lake Norman friends, family, and coworkers. w
