the parking lot of my college apartment building, was a snarling, sociopathic shrew. All attempts to win her affections were met with ferocious hisses and swipes of her dagger-like claws. She routinely peed on my pillow, bit my hand when I tried to give her a treat, and pooped not in, but right beside, the litter box. Tongue in cheek, I named her “Miss Personality.” After my roommate’s parents took the little she-devil, I was certain I would never invite another feline into my life. But then one evening 20-something years later, an aged, bedraggled, orange tabby strolled onto our deck. Emaciated, covered in bald spots, and with one ear chewed off, he was not much to look at. I gave him a piece of steak, only to have him turn his nose up at it. I instantly fell in love with the finicky rascal, as did my husband, who bestowed him with the name Vincent Van Gogh, on account of that missing chunk of ear. The vet wasn’t sure how old Vinnie was when he arrived, though the word ancient was used. His liver was a wreck and his legs quite decrepit, yet he was happy to give us his unconditional love for the next two years. Simply put, he stole my heart. So when Vinnie passed, I decided to heal my broken heart by opening it to another kitty. At the shelter, though, I couldn’t decide between the orange tabby that reminded me of Vinnie or the precious calico next to him. I called my husband and asked if he wanted two—he replied no, so like any good wife, I adopted them both anyway. Playful, naughty, entertaining, and a bit wild, Moxie and Tig have stolen our hearts, too. And though cats have a reputation for being aloof—standoffish, even—it occurred to me that a person can learn a lot about love from a cat. Vinnie, for instance, taught me to look past first impressions; after all,

what he lacked in beauty, he more than made up for in unabashed affection. He also taught me to appreciate the small stuff—like a paper bag left on the floor or the inexplicable delight of knocking my pen off my desk. Moxie and Tig have taught me to keep things fun and interesting, whether it’s a surprise attack from behind the couch, a scurry up the dining room curtains, or a halfalive dove dropped on the kitchen floor (admittedly, not so fun for the dove). I even learned a love lesson or two from Miss Personality. For starters, she taught me the importance of respecting another’s space—it took me being terrorized and bloodied, but I did finally learn. She also taught me that you can’t buy love, not even with cat nip. Mostly, though, that feisty feline taught me to learn to take a hint. (Oh, the money I would have saved on band aids had I caught on to her subtle [and not so subtle] cues earlier.) Thanks to that little miscreant, I learned to pay attention to the red flags in a relationship and came to understand that guy who hadn’t called was not being mysterious, wasn’t attending his grandmother’s 27th funeral, and didn’t have a broken phone—like Miss Personality, he just wasn’t that into me. If you find yourself in a similar relationship setback where your phone isn’t ringing and your heartthrob just ain’t that into you, don’t panic. Pour yourself a glass of wine, put on some lipstick, and pull yourself together, because you never know who’s going to walk onto your back deck and into your heart!

Most Romantic Moments

We see perfect love stories on television or on the big screen all the time . But here at Lake Norman Woman, we think the love stories from real life are the best. That’s why we asked our follower s on social media to share their ooiest, gooiest, mushiest moments with us, and they did not disappoint! Here are some of our favorites. AMANDA GONZALEZ

JESANNE RODEN-REYNOLDS

HAILEY KEMPER

My husband and I grew up in the same neighborhood right here in the Lake Norman area in Huntersville. We began dating in high school, and now we’re raising our three kids in the very neighborhood it all started!

My husband’s proposal was so romantic. I lived in Pennsylvania at the time on the street that we both grew up on. He took me out to lunch that day and brought me white carnations with blue tips, and then I returned to work, perfectly content with my Valentine’s gift. A snow storm started that afternoon, and I had been texting him for advice on the safest route home in the snow. As I started my drive, I saw a blue sign that asked, “Will you be mine?” Then I came to another sign that said, “You will be a wonderful wife.” It was then that I noticed one of the carnations was tied to the sign. I kept driving and saw, “Will you grow old with me?” Outside my neighborhood was a sign saying, “You will remember this day forever.” Then, as I turned onto our childhood street, I saw signs leading to my house, each with one word: “Jesanne”; “will”; “you”; and in front of my house, on one knee, was my now-husband and the sign, “marry me?” It was perfectly romantic!

I met my husband at a party soon after I moved to Mooresville in 2009. Because I had just relocated to the area and wanted to have some fun without being tied down, we only went on one date; although we did keep in touch through mutual friends, Facebook, and texting. I shared with him one evening that I was having a particularly bad week at work, and the next morning after I walked my dog I came home to flowers taped to my door with a note saying, “Sorry you are having a rough week, hope these help put a smile on your face.” Three years after that first date, I asked him out again, and now we’ve been married four years!

Leading The Way As we rise into leadership roles, it’s not always easy to navigate the leadership path. After all, there are as many leadership traits as there are leaders. LKN Woman talks to area leaders in the hope that we can learn from each other’s successes and failures in confronting leadership challenges. ROBIN SMITH SALZMAN, Owner/Marketing Director, Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram

The oldest of five children, leadership came fairly naturally to Robin Smith Salzman. Teachers described her early on as dependable, kind, hard-working, willing to step up and take the lead, yet quiet and unassuming at the same time.

HER DEFINIT ION O F LEADERSHIP:

Leadership to me is having the ability to make those around you be the very best that they can be. Nothing makes me prouder than having an employee, past or present, acknowledge that I helped them attain their career and personal goals.

“My leadership role model,” Robin explains, “was no one in particular. Within my own family, for as long as I can remember, I was the leader. This carried over to my career where it has always come naturally for me to organize and lead … always focused on just getting the job done.” Robin says her leadership style is “firm but fair.” A great listener who truly cares about others, it is important to her that her employees know that they are all treated fairly and that she empathizes and will support them with their individual challenges and goals. One of her leadership roles within the dealership is handling sensitive personnel issues as well as overseeing all marketing aspects of the business. “We love this area,” Robin smiles. “The individual communities and the amazing people make this such an incredible place to work and live.” With that said, another important element of good leadership is giving back to the community. Locally owned and operated, the business has strong roots in the Lake Norman and surrounding areas, and it is their goal to give back to local organizations and non-profit groups that improve the lives of the residents here.

Here are some other benefits to becoming a more compassionate human being: Cellular inflammation in the body is at the root of cancer and other diseases, and a life of meaning and purpose, rich in compassion and altruism, says one study, leads to lower inflammation and longer lifespans.

Compassion is a buffer against stress. A study at the University of Michigan discovered that “people who engaged in volunteerism lived longer than their non-volunteering peers, but only if their reasons for volunteering were altruistic rather than self-serving.” Compassion also boosts our health and well-being because it helps broaden our perspective beyond ourselves. Research shows that depression and anxiety are linked to a state of self-focus—when all we think about is “what’s good for me?” Another way in which compassion may boost our health is by increasing a sense of connection to others. One study found that lack of social connection is worse for your health than obesity, smoking, or high blood pressure.

AN LKN WOMAN WHO PERSONIFIES WHAT MAKES LAKE NORMAN WOMEN SO GREAT

Who helped guide your heart?

My mom is definitely my inspiration. She was a strong, single woman from Vietnam who spoke little English. She taught me and my sister to be independent, never accept handouts, and have a hard work ethic so we could provide for ourselves. Most importantly, she taught us to be thankful, especially for the opportunities we have in the United States. She was a great example of always being hospitable to guests in our home.

What brought you to the Lake Norman area?

My fiancé and I love the lake and we wanted to move closer to it, so now we live in Mooresville. We love the water and the lifestyle—and easy access to all the wonderful shops and restaurants.

What makes your heart sing?

It makes me happy to help and bring people together … inspiring and empowering others. I am also passionate about leading my team. I love watching a business grow. Growing the people on your team is a very important part of success. I’m also a big animal lover and absolutely love music, especially live music! Music moves me.

What roadblocks have you faced and how did you cope?

My biggest obstacle was adjusting to a different lifestyle after having my own business in New York City. I started working at Rock Barn right after returning to the area, and it took time to adjust. I struggled so much as a child, coming from overseas to fit into life in a small southern town. Sometimes I notice that the fearful feeling to fit in is still ingrained in me, but I recognize that and move on. It is how you embrace your feelings and how you react—I choose to react with gratitude and joy.

i am an LKNw oman because… It’s my home! Even through all the glitz and glamour of New York City, I’m home again here. I’m still that girl who loves making people happy, and I am blessed and very grateful to call Lake Norman home.

BE

HEART HEALTHY!

Are you just tired or is it something more? IN OUR HUSTLE AND BUSTLE WORLD,

being tired is just part of the game. But how do you know when it might be something more serious? According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic fatigue is different than being sleepy or exceedingly tired because it lasts longer and is more debilitating: “It’s a nearly constant state of weariness that develops over time and diminishes your energy and mental capacity. Fatigue at this level impacts your emotional and psychological well-being.”

*

© Studio Grand Ouest | Dreamstime.com

Chronic fatigue can be a sign of congestive heart failure, which happens when your heart doesn’t pump as well as it should. It can also indicate anemia (the leading cause of fatigue in women), urinary tract infections, diabetes, fibromyalgia, or thyroid issues. HERE ARE SOME FATIGUE FACTS TO HELP YOU DECIDE IF IT’S TIME TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR—

First, rule out other causes such as alcohol use, medications, excessive physical activity, lack of sleep, unhealthy eating habits, or caffeine (caffeine affects the adrenals which triggers counterproductive stressors in the body).

w

24 LKN

| FEBRUARY 2018

Note that anxiety, depression, grief, and stress are all natural causes of fatigue but are still issues you may want to address if they persist.

If your fatigue lasts for more than two weeks (despite efforts to live a healthy lifestyle), it may be time to talk to your physician.

Shortness of breath, fast heartbeat, dizziness, or extreme pain such as severe headaches can be indicators.

If you find simple, daily chores too much to handle, and your lifestyle in general is affected, please talk to your doctor.

For more information on fatigue and all its symptoms, causes, and treatments, contact the Mayo Clinic at www.mayoclinic.org.

A VALENTINE’S DINNER

TO REMEMBER!

kitchen

Pair this dish with a nice Sauvignon Blanc and serve with wild rice and salad … candles and rose petals on the table round out a beautifully romantic dinner! Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Duxelle With Dijon Cream Sauce YOU WILL NEED:

4 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh mushrooms 1 package fontina cheese 1 pint heavy cream 1 16 oz. jar Dijon mustard 2 tbs butter 8-10 strips of bacon (*Tip: Use the prepackaged, fully cooked bacon)

Salt & Pepper

w

26 LKN

| FEBRUARY 2018

Melt butter over medium heat in a large skillet.

1 Add onions, mushrooms, garlic, salt & pepper to

taste. Sauté until tender. Remove from heat to cool. (keep seasoned pan handy for cream sauce later)

2 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Meanwhile prepare chicken breasts for stuffing by

3 pounding them until thin and “rollable.”

Take your onion and mushroom mixture and place a

4 small amount on one of the pounded chicken breasts

(*Tip: divide your onion/mushroom mixture into 4 equal parts before rolling into the chicken breasts so you’ll be sure to have enough for each breast). Add a small slice or chunk of the fontina and then roll/fold the chicken closed, using the bacon and toothpicks to tie together.

5

Place on a deep baking sheet or in a casserole dish (lightly coat with cooking spray prior to placing chicken) Bake for 45-60 minutes, depending on thickness

6 of rolls. Chicken is done when juices run clear or

internal temperature is 180 degrees F.

DIJON CREAM SAUCE:

Take the pan you used to sauté the onions and mushrooms and pour in 1 pint heavy cream. Heat on medium to medium-high (stirring constantly) until the cream just starts to bubble and begins to thicken, reduce heat, add Dijon mustard and stir until desired thickness … promptly remove from heat as cream is easy to scorch.

Dr. Ryan Whalen and wife Brooke, owners of Whalen Dentistry in Cornelius, met through Brooke’s sorority skit project in their senior year at Virginia Tech. Through his fraternity, Ryan had been assigned to participate in the philanthropic event.

“She fell in love with me right away,” he says with a wink and a smile. Brooke says his blue eyes made her heart melt. The two became fast friends and, after a few months, they went on their first date. “He was a true gentleman,” gushes Brooke. “He picked me up in his Jeep, opened doors for me, and took me to a nice restaurant.” The couple married in May 2008 and are looking forward to celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. Ryan and Brooke have two

daughters: Belle, 7, and Lane, 4. The family’s beloved golden doodle, Beamer, is also the wellloved therapy dog at their office. The Whalens moved to the Lake Norman area after Ryan finished dental school at West Virginia University School of Dentistry. Brooke was living and working in Washington, DC, and was decidedly ready for a yard and a place to park her car. “I became a certified public accountant while in DC,” she says, “and more than

together.” Both Ryan and Brooke recognize the amazing and inspiring teams working at both locations. “A great team and a great work environment can be difficult to find,” says Ryan, “but we are lucky to have both … at both offices.” To unwind, the couple enjoys traveling or stay-cations on the lake, as well as vacations with their friends. Ryan also loves to golf, and Brooke recharges through exercise. The couple takes annual trips to Cabo San Lucas with friends, and the family just took their first trip to Disney. “We loved every second of it,” Brooke says. “It’s such a joy to hear the girls giggling and having fun.” A Europe adventure is next on their bucket list. Ryan and Brooke have also gained an appreciation for the local beer scene in recent years. Although they don’t share the same taste in beer, they enjoy trying different craft brews at local taprooms, restaurants, and tasting events. “Charlotte and Lake Norman make it so easy to try new things,” Brooke says, “and it is a fun, social outing to enjoy with friends and family.” 10 years ago now, I took a job with a large company in uptown Charlotte where I still work today.” As a young girl, Brooke expected to follow a career in art or music, but her college job and classes ignited her passion for business and accounting. “All the different roles I’ve had in my career have helped shape me as a business partner for Ryan,” she says. “I wouldn’t change a thing.” During the recession of 2008, Whalen Dentistry was formed. “It was tough, scary, and rewarding all at the same time,” Brooke points out. Ryan is proud of having built the business from the ground up, especially during such trying economic times. “I feel like the commitment we have to our patients and our focus on patient experience and compassion have kept us growing,” states Ryan. The couple also credits the grace of the hearts of the folks of Lake Norman who have welcomed them and continued to support them. There has been so much support, in fact, that Ryan and Brooke have purchased another dental office—Cornelius Dentistry. “We have learned so much in the past several months,” Brooke says, “and it’s been a fun project for me and Ryan to work on

A hard-working team, they deeply care for their employees and patients alike, and that is evidenced in everything they do. Whether at work or play, they know they are an example for their children and are setting the pace for their future. “Our kids are kind and beautiful, budding souls,” Ryan smiles. “I am so proud of my amazing family and grateful to be building and growing businesses with my incredible wife.” Brooke continues: “Ryan and I try to teach our daughters to be kind and work hard above all else … and definitely to not sweat the small stuff!” When life gets hectic or off-kilter, Brooke is encouraged through her daily devotional, Jesus Calling. “It has an uncanny way of calming my nerves and speaks to my heart just when I need it most,” she adds. Their faith in God helps keep the couple focused and on the right path in life. “We found our home at Lake Forest Church in Huntersville right after we moved here,” explains Brooke, “and it continues to be a source of inspiration and guidance.” The most important quality, the couple believes, is to have a caring and compassionate heart for others. The Whalen family and their respective office teams put that mantra into action every single day.

There was a time not too long ago when I wasn’t a big fan of cats. Looking back, I ‘m not really sure why I felt this way, but I was absolutely certain that I just wasn’t a “cat person.” I A D M I T I T.

community

Enter Vinnie. This ancient orange tabby showed up on our back deck two summers ago while we were grilling steaks. Emaciated and covered in bald spots, he meowed incessantly until we offered him a couple of bites of our dinner. After giving the meaty morsels a cursory sniff, the starving feline turned up his nose and looked at us disdainfully as if to say “Seriously? I don’t eat red meat.” That was it…we instantly fell in love. This finicky feline’s right ear had been gnawed to shreds at some point in his past, so debating between Holyfield and Vincent Van Gogh (Get it?), my husband and I decided on “Vinnie” as his new moniker.

Feral cats are rarely adopted because of their terror of humans, and up to 73 percent of those brought into shelters are killed. Unless they become a Lucky Cat, that is. It wasn’t very long after Vinnie moved into (took over) our household that another feline showed up in our neighborhood, this time a kitten. Scared, but hungry, this kitty would meow for hours outside various homes, but unlike Vinnie, he would run away as soon as anyone made an effort to touch him. He was interested in being fed, but not in any human contact whatsoever—he was feral. With two homeless cats showing up in our area in such a short period, I began looking into the problem of “community” cats and discovered that there are tens of thousands of feral and stray cats in Mecklenburg County alone. Often abandoned by owners who for whatever reason decide they no longer want a cat, these felines breed and produce kittens, forming large colonies that have very little or no human contact. Feral cats are rarely adopted because of their terror of humans, and up to 73 percent of those brought into shelters are killed. Unless they become a Lucky Cat, that is.

who is the

Lucky cky One?

Lake Norman Lucky Cat began in 1998 as an alternative to euthanizing feral cats through a Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage (TNRM) program. Lucky Cat humanely traps and transports feral cats to a veterinarian to be evaluated, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated. While friendly cats are put up for adoption, ones that are not interested in humans are returned to the site where they were trapped—they are then “managed” by a dedicated caretaker who provides food and water daily as well as a simple shelter.

laura MAULTSBY LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.

on FOLLOWING YOUR HEART:

My passion truly lies in helping people sell their homes! Staging is key and I love to stage homes. My best day is fabric shopping and hunting deals at the High Point Furniture Market. It is very gratifying to be able to be successful in a sale after the homeowner has had several agents who weren’t able to sell their home. The excitement of the homeowner and the buyers during a sale is what keeps the spark in my passion.

on

INSPIRATION: As a child, my mom and grandmother inspired me to learn to sew. When I was 20 years old, my mom bought me my first sewing machine. After getting married two years later, I made a duvet cover, pillows, curtains, and recovered a headboard for our first home. I recently had the motor rebuilt because I’ve worn the thing out! I love sewing and making beautiful things, just like my mom and grandmother did.

Laura Maultsby Maultsby Realty Group at Keller Williams Realty MOUNTAIN ISLAND, NC

FINDING YOUR STRIDE: My husband left his job in June 2016; we started a team and began working together. With four children, it was a very scary risk, but we knew we needed to regain control of raising our large family. It was very important for us to have a balanced home/work life. It took a few months to figure out our roles, but we found our groove and enjoy working as a team. I’m so thankful to work beside my best friend every day and provide for our family.

on MAINTAINING PERSPECTIVE:

When I’m having a bad day, I ask myself what are you grateful for? Who loves you? Why do you do what you do? Asking myself these questions always helps to redirect my negative thoughts and motivates me to change my perspective. If I’m up against a hard task, or making a hard call, I ask myself – would you rather make that hard call, or eat a frog? The answer is always – make the call! The Heart of Your Home Many fond memories are made around the dining room table; holiday meals are shared, games played, birthdays celebrated. Having a special place to gather enhances those experiences! By: Kim Mehta

trend is live-edge wood slabs finished in an industrial chic style, often using simple metal legs which come in many different styles and finishes. Selecting the right slab for your home is the key to making it personal. There are dozens of species of exotic woods to choose from based on the size required and the color desired.

Monkey Pod can be found in Southeast Asia but also grows in Central America. The color ranges from deep tan to medium brown and the unique grain pattern gives this species an iridescent quality. One stunning species that will always catch your eye is Waterfall Bubinga from Western Africa. The dark red color combined with a bubble grain pattern is sure to impress.

For a large, grand table look for Guanacaste, Monkey Pod, or Bubinga. These trees are gigantic and produce beautiful slabs ranging from 30”-50” wide and up to 12’ long. Guanacaste is a gorgeous species that grows in Central America. It is a rich, dark brown with light sap along the edges which makes it a great alternative to American Walnut, which does not grow that large.

Smaller areas may require smaller slabs. Many species are available in 25”-35” widths and lengths of 8’10’. The range of colors is vast: Olivewood from Italy is creamy colored with brown lines running through the grain; Wenge from Africa is very dark brown with black grain; Purpleheart from South America is…you guessed it…bright purple! There is no need to stain the slabs because the natural colors are what make each one unique. Slabs aren’t just for dining room tables—the creative uses are endless! Replacing that boring coffee table with a unique, custom-made piece will bring new life into your home design. Bar tops, light fixtures, and headboards are other ways you can work a piece of slab furniture into your home. Many custom furniture makers are finding creative ways to fill in cracks or holes with colored or glow-in-the-dark resin. Others have even created pebble-filled streams down the center of the slab or added a river of blue glass. Home Sweet Home, Home Is Where the Heart Is, There’s No Place Like Home … there is a reason why there are so many well-known catch phrases to relay how much your home means to your family. Sweet memories linger every time I pass by our dining table that seats 14 easily. This piece of furniture will be passed on to my children and will be a reminder of all the good times spent there together.

GETTING AT THE HEART OF

oral surgery

Q

A SPECIAL EDITION Q&A

By: Dr. Michael Foran

Q

WHAT IS AN ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty of dentistry that is recognized by the American Dental Association. To become an oral surgeon, one must first complete dental school. After graduation, the dentist must then complete an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. This residency lasts four to seven years, depending on the program, and is the longest residency of any of the dental specialties.

Q

ARE ALL ORAL SURGEONS BOARD CERTIFIED?

No. After completing residency, oral surgeons are encouraged to become board certified; and this is a twoyear process that involves passing a written qualification exam, followed by a rigorous oral examination. Not all oral surgeons complete this process. Board certification is important because, without it, many hospitals will not allow an oral surgeon to operate in their facility. Having surgical and admitting privileges to a hospital gives an oral surgeon access to other medical professionals and equipment that are not available in the private office setting. Board certification is also required to be a member of OMSNIC, the largest insurer of oral surgeons.

Q

WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?

Any dentist in any specialty may attend short courses after graduation to receive a certificate to perform some level of sedation in their office. Oral surgeons spend four to five intense months as an anesthesia resident in a hospital setting and generally carry the more complex certifications of deep sedation and general anesthesia. They must also be certified in advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS), and their offices must have crash carts that contain the same life-saving drugs and equipment that are used in emergency rooms and trauma bays.

Q

WHAT DO ORAL SURGEONS DO?

Q

DENTAL IMPLANTS SEEM TO BE PREVALENT IN DENTISTRY TODAY. ARE ORAL SURGEONS CONSIDERED IMPLANTOLOGISTS?

Oral surgeons are devoted to performing surgery on the head and neck area of a person. Much of this surgery is in the oral cavity. Oral surgeons specialize in the extraction of third molars (wisdom teeth) as well as infected and nonfixable teeth, and even healthy teeth that require removal for orthodontics and braces. But oral surgery is not just limited to the removal of teeth. Oral surgeons are heavily involved in the management of trauma to the face. They perform simple procedures such as fixing a small fracture of the jaw, to complete reconstruction of complex facial injuries. Additionally, these physicians manage simple to complex dental infections. Much of this management involves removal of the infection source as well as cleaning the deep areas of the head and neck to remove the extensions of the infection. Oral surgeons remove both benign and malignant lesions of the head and neck area and can provide moderate and deep sedation in their office as well as general anesthesia in some cases.

No, the terms implantology and implantologist can be very deceiving and are marketing terms that anyone can use. The American Dental Association does not recognize implantology as a specialty; subsequently there is no such person as an implantologist. Preparing the mouth and the bone for dental implants and the placement of the implant itself is a large part of our training and specialty. Many oral surgeons have advanced imaging equipment that they utilize for implant planning and precise surgical placement.

Dr. Michael Foran is a board-certified surgeon with Carolina Oral and Facial Surgery located at 19910 North Cove Road in Cornelius. You may contact them at 704.892.1198 or visit www.carolinaoms.com.

number one priority – my family.” During a road trip, Kristy and her husband of six years, Neil, discussed their long-time dream of owning their own business. They committed to actually doing the research this time and found that becoming franchisees might be the best solution. Subsequently, the couple chose to buy into Massage Heights. “It’s a true family-owned business,” Kristy says, “with family-focused management … it won us over!” Kristy and her family live in Cornelius just a few minutes from their business location. “The number one thing I love about Lake Norman is the small-town feel,” she says. “We are a community of caring, casual, friendly, and loving individuals.” Kristy adds that time with her family is very important and they often enjoy spending the day on the lake or taking long walks in the park. “My family is everything to me,” she beams. Kristy is also aware that perspective is key in realizing your own happiness. “Knowing that no matter how hard I think things may be, someone else out there has wished for, begged for, and prayed for what I have,” Kristy so aptly acknowledges.

In fact, Kristy has faced her own obstacles in life, which serves to heighten her awareness of the importance of perspective. Twelve years ago, after being sick for months with enlarged lymph nodes (and eventually unable to walk due to pain), Kristy had a lymph node biopsy. She was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis, a chronic inflammatory disorder with unknown origin. “High doses of prednisone were the treatment,” she explains, “and with terrible side effects, it became my enemy.” Determined to take charge of her own health, Kristy began controlling the inflammation with changes in her diet. She no longer eats any animal protein, which triggers inflammatory reactions within the body. “Today, I am healthy and have been declared in remission.” Kristy knows that the condition could recur at any time, but tries not to let it consume her thoughts. “I am a firm believer of living each day to the fullest – you never know what tomorrow will bring.” By: Michelle Love | Photography By: Chelsea Bren

a heartfelt VALENTINE'S DAY By: Jan Brittain

I’ve been privileged to share in many conversations over matters of the heart. I’ve sat with people facing the end of their own lives and with individuals coming to grips with the death of a loved one. I’ve stood with couples making promises to each other and to God as they entered the covenant of marriage. I’ve met parents at the altar of baptism as they promised to raise their children within the community of faith. I’ve sat by hospital beds, in hospital waiting rooms, and paced hospital hallways. I’ve met with parents distressed over the bad choices their children were making. I’ve offered support to spouses whose marriages were at risk. I’ve prayed at the graveside as goodbyes were said. I N 4 0 Y E A R S O F M I N I S T R Y,

All kinds of good things might actually happen. Husbands and wives would spend time in meaningful conversation about how blessed they have been because of their marriage and what hopes they have for their shared future. Parents would take time to hug their children and then spend a little quality time with them. Friends would express their appreciation for their mutual support and engagement. Adult grandchildren would take time to call their grandparents to say “thank you.” If we would choose to use Valentine’s Day as a day to focus on matters of the heart, our relationships would become a bit stronger, our lives would be a bit better, and everyone important to us would be a bit happier. I for one would choose that any day over flowers or a box of candy. Rev. Jan Brittain is the senior pastor at Williamson’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Mooresville.

All these very different circumstances of life have one thing in common. In such moments, everyone is focused on matters of the heart. It’s true. In these critical moments of life, the really important things rise to the surface. I’ve never heard a person with a terminal illness express regret over failing to spend more hours at the office or on the golf course. I’ve never heard a parent say they should have spent less time with their children.

The simple truth is this: when you get right down to the nitty-gritty the only things that really matter are, in fact, matters of the heart. Wouldn’t it be great if we could use this Valentine’s Day to do more than send heart-shaped candy and fancy greeting cards? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if February 14th became a call to attend to matters of the heart?
