about the start of a new year. The new calendar with nothing on it promises a clean slate, new adventures, and so many new doors waiting to be opened. But what about the doors you should close? After all, opening new doors is exciting; closing them can be much tougher. I’ve had plenty of experience with doors that are difficult to close. In fact, there was a time when I felt as if nearly every door in my life seemed to be screaming, “Shut me, please!” My love life, my family life, my career…none were going the way that I wanted. Even though the changes I needed to make were abundantly clear, I feared the unknown and was overwhelmed by the possibility of letting others down. So I kept trying to force those doors open until I was broken and exhausted. But despite these extreme (and now with hindsight, somewhat embarrassing) efforts, the doors kept slamming shut. Then during a weepy afternoon of feeling sorry for myself and watching Titanic for the 117th time, I had an epiphany. Some doors need to be shut. How did this revelation come about, you ask? Why through the example of the Grand Poobah of door closing: Titanic’s heroine, Rose DeWitt Bukater. I admit, when it comes to door sharing, Rose is less than accomplished—I mean, seriously: she couldn’t have scooched over just a bit and let Jack climb on there with her? But, when it comes to door closers, Rose is the bomb. She closes the door on living a life that she has no interest in even though it offers financial security. She shuts the door on the conventions of the day, even though they assure her a place in high society. She slams the door on her toxic relationship with her fiancé, even though that means facing a world she knows nothing about on her own and

penniless (well, except for that 56-carat blue diamond in her pocket). Rose didn’t just teach me that some doors should be slammed shut, though; she also taught me that a closed door doesn’t mean that life is over. In fact, after closing the door on everything her life had been up to that point, Rose goes on (and on and on). She chugs beer, spits like a man, poses nude, makes love to Jack in the back of a car, and dances with abandon. And though she had to close the door on Jack (again, why not just scooch over?), by going on to travel the world, become an actress, and take up exciting hobbies, Rose proves that closed doors are almost certain to lead to new ones waiting to be opened. With some help from Rose and quite a bit of reflection, I was able to discover the power and purpose in the closing doors in my life. When I finally shifted my focus away from those closed doors and paid attention, I found that other doors had opened to me—doors that brought more happiness and satisfaction into my life than ever before. What about you? Do you have some doors you need to close, ones that are keeping you from moving forward and embracing new possibilities? You can be like me and pull on those doors until you’re battered and bruised or you can be like Rose and be ready when new doors bring far better things into your life. Don’t worry, those new doors will open for you as if by magic, but only when you’re courageous enough to close some first.

Leading The Way As we rise into leadership roles, it’s not always easy to navigate the leadership path. After all, there are as many leadership traits as there are leaders. LKN Woman talks to area leaders in the hope that we can learn from each other’s successes and failures in confronting leadership challenges. JULIE MILLS, Progressive Pilates
Choosing the right thing, regardless of the consequences, is the hallmark of integrity. And if you ask Julie Mills, certified Pilates instructor and owner of Progressive Pilates in Cornelius, it’s the hallmark of a good leader, too. “Without integrity,” she asserts, “a leader’s message is meaningless.”
HER D EFINITION OF LEADERSHIP:
A leader is someone who inspires others to grow and achieve their true potential by helping them reach the goals they didn’t even know they had.

Committee chairperson for the Junior League of Dayton
Julie saw firsthand how a superior leader can have a positive impact on others while working for a boss in Minneapolis who exuded integrity as well as other leadership skills in all of his interactions with his team. “He inspired me to be the best I could be and empowered me to do my job at a high level simply by treating me as a respected professional at all times….I had the utmost confidence in his abilities, and mine, when I worked with him,” she recalls. With that gold standard of leadership as her example, Julie has excelled as the leader of her own team at Progressive Pilates as well as at numerous leadership positions with the Lake Norman Rotary Club over the past eight years, including in her current role as the club’s membership chair. With a willingness to get her own hands dirty and treating her team members as equals at all times, Julie also relies heavily on her own core principles to guide her through difficult situations. And every leader, no matter how skilled, will face difficult situations—and they will make mistakes, Julie asserts. But like all great leaders, Julie does not let those situations or missteps deter her. “In those circumstances,” she says, “I make it a point to understand as many perspectives as possible. One of Steven Covey’s seven habits of highly effective people is to ‘Seek first to understand, then be understood.’ It’s one of my favorites!” In a nutshell, though, she believes it really all comes back to integrity: “In a perfect world, the values and goals of those I am leading would align with mine. When that’s not the case, I look inward to my central beliefs and standards and use them as a guiding light to make the right decisions.”

Fitness Trackers 2 0 1 8
Fitness trackers have become much more than just basic step counters. These activity bands are now a complete wellness device, with 24/7 heartrate monitoring, sleep tracking, and sedentary alerts. The right fitness band depends on your individual needs and how active you are. Some folks may just want to count steps; others want GPS for running and advanced resting heartrate data. The good news is that there’s something for everyone. Following are a few things to consider when searching for the right tracker:
COMPATIBILITY
Be sure it will sync with your cell phone or computer. Some trackers only work with Apple’s iOS; others only work with Android. And it is important to note that many do not work with Windows. BATTERY LIFE EXPECTATIONS
DATA COLLECTION
Battery life can last from one day to several months. A tracker with a color touchscreen and a host of sensors will need to be charged more often than those with simple LED lights. Also, not all are rechargeable; some run on coin cell batteries like the ones used in calculators.
These smart devices have a variety of features depending on your needs and lifestyle, for example, various trackers offer: Heartrate monitors to track your pulse throughout the day; Gyroscope to determine if you’re standing, sitting, reclining, swimming, biking, etc.; GPS to track your location; Magnetometer to detect specific movements and determine what direction you’re moving in; Barometer to determine your altitude when climbing stairs or hiking trails.
WATERPROOF NEEDS
FASHION VS FUNCTION
A lot of trackers are worn on the wrist but some can be worn as a pendant or clipped to your clothing. However, they do come in a variety of shapes, colors, and materials so make sure you feel comfortable wearing it.
Many are simply “splash proof” so it’s important to consider how waterproof your tracker is. Some can withstand a shower or a swim, others not so much, so do your homework here as well.

i am an LKNw oman because…
AN LKN WOMAN WHO PERSONIFIES WHAT MAKES LAKE NORMAN WOMEN SO GREAT
What’s your window on the world?
Women today have a lot of opportunities that have been provided because women before us have spoken up and worked hard to clear the path for us. Today’s women have tools to help with time management; they have employers that offer flextime for family needs; and they have support systems that are larger than just the immediate family. Many changes have come about from when I first started juggling my kids, home, and career. My dream was that my daughter could have it all—and there’s no reason why she can’t!
Close to the mountains and the beach, Lake Norman is an amazing place to live. It is not too far to drive back to our home town in New York, and it offers so much entertainment and great weather to be outside enjoying life.
How does your work fit your personality? With my financial background and office skills (and having moved to several states and bought and sold several homes), I was a natural fit for the housing industry. I am constantly inspired by the people I meet and absolutely love putting people in their dream homes.
What’s fun when you’re not working?
My passion is to leave the earth a better place than when I got here, so I like to plant beautiful things … I unwind with a good book or tend to my garden. And travel is one of the reasons why I work. I love to see new places – our trip to Ireland was a dream come true and recently we took a Mediterranean cruise that was so fantastic.
Who helped and inspired you along the way? My parents always let me discover
who I was, and they taught me how to work hard and how to stay strong and be a leader. I also had a great Catholic education with teachers who inspired me. And, without a doubt, I have the most amazing husband! He works long, hard hours and is so caring and protective of me and the kids. My associations with friends and influences from day-to-day encounters have all helped mold me into a pretty independent hard worker who cares deeply about those around me and the way I treat them.
What would you tell a young you? Be open to changes, enjoy your kids because time goes by in a blink, take time for yourself once in a while, dare to dream, climb the ladder, and be ready when the kids don’t need you as much anymore. I often recite my favorite quote by A.A. Milne: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why we call it the present.”

Women’s Pelvic Health:
CUTTING-EDGE
VAGINAL TREATMENTS Eventually all women develop signs of menopause which may include vaginal atrophy leading to painful intercourse. This is known as Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GMS) and is due to declining estrogen BY DR. JOHN HETTIARACHCHI levels as the ovaries start to fail. This syndrome may also occur after removal of the ovaries or anti-estrogen chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer. The lack of estrogen causes the superficial vaginal cell lining to become very thin and friable. The natural vaginal secretions/lubrication, folds and elasticity is then lost. The vagina becomes less pliable, shortened and narrowed. Women then start experiencing vaginal dryness, itching, burning and pain with intercourse. The thin vaginal skin tears easier due to the lack of lubrication. I have found my patients may avoid any physical contact for months or years due to these factors. The lack of Estrogen also causes vaginal canal pH imbalance changing the environment from acidic to more alkaline. The normal “good” vaginal lactobacilli bacteria start to disappear. While the “bad” bacteria begin to dominate leading to increased bladder infections. Then a cycle of over prescribed antibiotics may begin. Many women we see also complain of vaginal looseness which occurs with stretching of the pelvic muscles and ligaments--or weakens with aging or childbirth. For women who want to avoid vaginal surgery or hormonal treatments, our boutique office offers the complete package of
options including laser, radio-frequency or PRP options. In fact, it is the first center in Charlotte to offer the MonaLisa Touch Co2 laser with extensive experience in treating varieties of vaginal issues. It is a well-tolerated non-invasive 5 minute in-office procedure. It usually requires 3 treatment sessions to revitalize the vaginal tissue to pre-menopausal health. With having performed thousands of such treatments over the past 2 years, I can’t stress the importance of seeking out a Urologist or Urogyn who also has Board Certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) to provide this type of treatment. You should expect the expert to perform a thorough consultation and pelvic exam to determine the degree of atrophy and goals of the treatment. At our center, we design an individualized treatment protocol. Developing different treatment plans for each patient has helped us to achieve the optimal results for each individual dependent on their unique need and response throughout the treatment plan. Our patients see improvement in vaginal lubrications, enhanced sexual encounters, decreased bladder infections, vaginal burning, urinary incontinence and vaginal looseness. In addition, we have several radio-frequency options for other women who may be looking for an alternative to laser therapy. We have found a new technology that can significantly restore collagen in the vaginal canal. These modalities help tighten the vaginal canal and help restore vaginal sensation and pleasure. The build-up of new collagen around the urethra and bladder can improve bladder leaks/ incontinence. The lack of estrogen creates physical changes in the pelvis and this may affect the patient emotionally. For those suffering with sexual dysfunction we offer the “O” shot. It is a concentration of the patient’s own concentrated blood products—platelet rich plasma (PRP) with growth factors that is injected into the clitoris and “G” spot in the vagina. My patients are saying “it’s a life changer, a marriage saver, and a simple lunchtime procedure.” I’ve even had another postmenopausal woman say “why wouldn’t a woman want to have this done to recapture their youth?” My greatest reward is providing care to breast cancer survivors and patients who suffer with Lichen Sclerosus because they’ve never had any options for therapy until now. I’ve treated women who have been celibate for well over 10 years and after treatment at our practice, their quality of life has improved dramatically. For more quotes from our patients, please visit www.realself.com and look up Dr. Hettiarachchi.
Dr. John Hettiarachchi, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, is board certified in Urology and Urological Surgery and subspecialty certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. The Blank Page By: Starr Miller
LIST WHAT YOU NEED TO ACCOMPLISH A WELL-IMAGINED SPACE:
Often when thinking about a new year or a new opportunity we can see it as a blank page. Everything is new and possible. However, as any writer can tell you a blank page can also be rather daunting. What is the first step, word, thought? How do I begin? When I was in design school at Parsons, the first semester was spent getting our heads out of seeing obstacles and concentrating on using our imagination. We were not given a white box to start; we had to start by using our imagination and develop the blank space for ourselves. This is one of the harder things to do in life. Build something from nothing. Frankly, as an interior designer, it is easy to take what a client tells you: I like this color, I only like symmetry, I want this furniture and I don’t want changes to the space. That process is a bit like taking an order in a restaurant. What is harder, yet more intriguing, is to take that information, along with everything else you learn about a client, clear the space of any restrictions, and start from a blank canvas. This allows years of education and experience, pure imagination, and possibility to take over and lead the way. This is what designers live for.
w
24 LKN
| JANUARY 2018
Do you need to add pieces? Is the color scheme what you want, and does it suit your taste; is it just the color everyone is using this year or are they the colors you have always used in the past?
BEFORE NOW, HOW DO YOU MANAGE A LESS INVOLVED PROCESS FOR YOURSELF? 1
Measure out your room and furniture, separately.
2
Draw out your blank room (to scale) with zero furnishings in it.
3
Then, cut out furnishing model pieces (to scale).
Have you added enough pattern to make it interesting or are you playing it safe with solids?
4 Start placing the furniture in different places around your room. (Look at magazines to help you think of options.) Sit and think. Come back the next day and review again. Can you imagine other options?
NOW ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING PRACTICAL QUESTIONS: Have you allowed for proper storage?
Is there a floor outlet where you need it?
AFTER
Is there enough lighting for reading?
Can you easily move around the space using doors and obvious travel paths?
Does the arrangement let everyone see the fireplace/TV/view?
Do you have different textures in the space to add depth?
Have you extended the design to the vertical, connecting the ceiling and the floorplan? Do your choices flow with the connecting spaces? Have you gotten rid of the items you do not really love? If not, do so now! Have you used your imagination?
My philosophy is to embrace the blank page and take your time. If you get “writer’s block,” go read a book and come back to it tomorrow. My best ideas come in the middle of the night. Maybe yours will too. Starr Miller is the president and principal designer at StarrMiller Interior Design, Inc. Contact her at 704.896.3321 or visit www.starrmiller.com.

A LIFETIME OF
Learning OPENING NEW DOORS FOR CHILDREN By: Michelle Love | Photography By: Chelsea Bren
Huntington Learning Center’s J A C K I E P A C E is proud of her Charlotte heritage. “I’m a Charlotte native and a product of Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools,” Jackie says. Passionate about education, she always knew she wanted to be a teacher. Jackie graduated UNC-Chapel Hill, earning a degree in math education; and, while in college, Jackie married her childhood sweetheart, Stephen Pace. The couple recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. Jackie and Stephen moved back to Charlotte after graduation and started putting down roots. Jackie began teaching math at McClintock Middle School. After their two children (Brian and Kathy) were born, Jackie began tutoring students in math. When the children were older, Jackie taught mathematics at Charlotte Latin School. While there, she started math teams, and they competed at local and state levels. “It could not have been any more fun for me,” Jackie smiles. With her passion to learn, Jackie left Charlotte Latin in pursuit of a master’s degree in educational administration.

Hanging on her office wall is Jackie’s favorite quote, and it has become Huntington’s mantra: “Always remember you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” And that is what they instill in all of the children at Huntington. The assistant director at Huntington,
RACHAEL H O W E R , adds,
“I was still trying to find a way to make a difference in the lives of more kids,” she says. Jackie then came across Huntington Learning Center and found her place as executive director. “Little did I know,” she recounts, “that my life’s path would lead me into a business where I could have the opportunity to change the lives of thousands of kids.” The reward for Jackie comes when parents and former students contact the Center to say, "Thank You." She has received many calls from moms and dads thanking her for the role she had in helping their child get to college, graduate college, or even get that coveted career. “One mom called to say that we had changed her daughter’s life and wanted us to know she was graduating college as a teacher,” Jackie recalls fondly. Those phone calls become special moments for the entire staff. With all her life experiences, Jackie is most proud of her family. “When you watch your children turn into amazing adults, it is the best feeling in the world,” explains Jackie. Son Brian is Stephen's business partner and was recently selected as the NC Home Builder of the Year, but he also has played the keyboard for several church groups, and is the father to three girls. One of his daughters, Kathy, is the mother to a special needs son with a mitochondrial disease. She has used her circumstances for good and organized a special needs program for their church.
“If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” This phrase frequents Rachael’s thoughts, especially when she is contemplating a new life event. Rachael has been with Huntington for more than seven months and has settled in quite nicely as a new team member. “You have to quit thinking about all of the what-if’s,” she insists. Rachael’s best advice to her students is to not let your own negative thoughts prevent you from pursuing your goals. “As I got into the teaching profession,” she says, “I realized my admiration was for the teachers who made learning fun. I want to be that kind of teacher.” Rachael’s undergraduate education is in media arts/TV video production, and she soon plans to pursue a master’s degree in teaching. Rachael grew up in a small town in central Pennsylvania and attended college in Pittsburgh. After graduating, she met her boyfriend, Brooks, who proposed marriage to her this past summer, and they plan to wed in September. With a glowing smile, Rachael exclaims, “Brooks motivates me to go after my dreams and grow as an individual.” The couple moved to Cornelius in June, with Max, their cat. “Moving to the Lake Norman area is the best decision we could have made,” Rachael says. “Everyone is so friendly, and the lake is gorgeous!” She and Brooks enjoy recreating on the water during their off time, and Rachael also loves to travel, sharing that her trip to Ireland in 2013 was life-altering, opening her eyes to the various cultures and people around the world. On the excursion, Rachael met two new friends and they have become life-long travel buddies. The trio has traveled to New York, North Dakota, and Canada. For Rachael and Jackie, leading Huntington Learning Center is a way to change lives by making learning fun and helping children walk through the doors of life confidently and armed with knowledge. Learning is a lifetime collection of choices, selecting the path that will lead you in the direction you want to go. These two women are on a mission to help children find their way, and stay on the path to success.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR YOU AND THE FAMILY
Gray top
As Mark Twain is noted as saying, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” So if you like to travel, don’t wait … adventure awaits! Here are a few things to keep in mind on your next trip:
Black top
Rise and shine Start your day early. Not only will you get to do more activities and sightseeing, but you will enjoy fewer crowds and shorter lines. You can also get more bang for your vacation buck with early-bird specials. When the heat of the day and the masses emerge, you and your family will be ready for a break poolside!

Talk to locals Locals are usually more than happy to share knowledge about their hometown. You will be amazed at the bargains they steer you to, the hidden area attractions, that special hole-in-thewall diner that serves the best burger ever—and don’t be surprised to be regaled with stories and history that your travel app won’t be privy to!
Pack light, but strategically Allow each family member one small suitcase and one small travel bag. A Family Travel Kit is always good to have on hand as well—a small bag that contains essentials such as extra cash, basic toiletries, firstaid items, bottled water, nutrition bars, flashlight, etc.
Try to keep your routine You don’t want to be too regimented on vacation, but everyone will feel better if they get enough sleep, stay hydrated, and make healthy food choices… and don’t forget the sunscreen!

WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR: Even as a young child I knew I loved
business and children. After having kids of my own, I began to research schools and discovered The Goddard School. I really appreciated the school’s play-based, holistic curriculum. As an owner, I could combine my passion for entrepreneurship and children into one business—it was the perfect fit. I absolutely love helping children develop a foundation for a life-long love of learning. It’s so fulfilling to make a daily positive impact on the lives of our students.
on
LIFE LESSONS: My son was born seven weeks prematurely. It was completely unexpected and unexplained. I was told my pregnancy, up to that point, had been perfect. This was our first child, and we had no idea what to expect. It was the first of many examples where my children (we have two: Russell, 6, and Abigail, 4) showed me that I can’t plan, control, or always schedule my life. It made me a better person, a little more flexible, and gave me a crash course in motherhood!
on
BEING A PROUD MAMA: Raising my children is my biggest job and hopefully my biggest achievement once they are grown. Recently my son tried to donate his entire allowance of $10 to the police raising money to buy Christmas gifts for children (the police officer was kind enough to give him change). He then went on to purchase me a hot cider with his money. It’s days like those that make the hard work worth it.
on PLAYING TO YOUR STRENGTHS:
Laura Catto The Goddard School HUNTERSVILLE, NC
The modern woman is expected to “do it all.” I’ve found this isn’t very realistic. Accepting your strengths and weaknesses is the key to a healthy balance. I’m not a great cook and I have accepted that (thankfully my husband is an amazing chef). However, I am very organized so I am the “secretary” of the household.
on
GRATITUDE: I’m so thankful for my parents, and all they did for me. They both pursued higher degrees as adults, instilling in me the value of education. My dad was a teacher and he made learning fun for me. They also both worked hard and never lived above their means. Their examples of budgeting, saving for big purchases, and prioritizing in general helped me gain financial freedom (for example, I paid my student loan off within two years of graduation). They also arranged their schedules so they could be with me and my brother as much as possible, always putting their family first. Laura Catto is the on-site owner of The Goddard School located at 9534 Kincey Avenue in Huntersville. She can be contacted at HuntersvilleNC@goddardschools.com or at 704.489.3893.Visit www.goddardschool.com for more information and locations.

USE PADDED INSOLES.
They really do help!
Self
AVOID THIN SOLES. It will almost always
give you pain on the bottom of your foot. “You want a thicker sole,” says stylecaster.com, “or a little bit of a platform, which will offset some of the pressure when you’re walking. A rubbery material will absorb that pressure.”
MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR PODIATRIST. If
you wear high heels regularly, you will inevitably have foot problems … your podiatrist will become your BFF!
KNOW YOUR SHOE SIZE.
There’s nothing worse than exacerbating pain by trying to squeeze into a smaller size; it’s better to have extra room than not enough.
Kick your shoes off during the day and stretch your feet and toes.
GO FOR THICKER HEELS.
Those stilettos are killers! A thicker heel keeps your feet from shifting so much.

wearing high heels makes the outfit, but your feet take the heat! According to WebMD, “problems range from common concerns like bunions, corns, and calluses to more complex issues like misshapen hammertoes or that excruciating pain in the ball of the foot that seems to grow worse with each passing year.” A recent survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association revealed that approximately 42 percent of women admitted they would wear a shoe they liked even if it was painful, and roughly 73 percent admitted already having shoe-related foot problems. With this in mind, here are a few tips for wearing heels.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month! © Shannon Fagan | Dreamstime
The good news is that the cervical cancer death rate has gone down by more than 50 percent over the last 40 years, but still it is estimated that there will be 15,000 new cases diagnosed this year with a resulting 5,000 deaths.
HPV H PV
Various strains of the human papillomavirus virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease, play a major role in cervical cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, HPV is among the most common sexually transmitted infections in the United States. However, most women who become infected do not know they have it; the body’s immune system usually rids the infection naturally within two years. By age 50, at least four out of every five women will have been infected with HPV at one point in their lives. The majority of women infected with the HPV virus do NOT develop cervical cancer but they are alarming numbers regardless.

from burnout to new beginnings Dr. Lindsey Mashburn is the owner of South Lake Women’s Healthcare, a gynecological practice in Cornelius. Lindsey graduated from North Mecklenburg High School and the College of Charleston, attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and completed her residency at Wake Forest University. After realizing in medical school that she loved obstetrics and gynecology more than her focus of neurology, Lindsey changed paths. However, after being on call every third night and trying to be supermom, she began to struggle with the workload. In fact, she states that over half of OB/ GYN physicians experience burnout. She was at a crossroads and needed to make a change in her life. A C O R N E L I U S N AT I V E ,
Lindsey turned to her strong faith to find a solution. “After lots of prayer and soul searching,” she explains, “I decided to leave the obstetrics side of medicine and concentrate only on the gynecology side.” It was a tough decision for her, but realizing there was a real need for the specific care of women’s health outside of childbirth, Lindsey found her niche. “I am able to schedule more time with my patients and not get called away for deliveries,” she smiles. Lindsey also focuses on educating her patients on the processes their bodies are going through during the menopausal transition. “There is so much more to menopause than hot flashes,” she winks. Being a native, Lindsey already had a love for the Lake Norman area; however, after becoming a business owner, her appreciation grew. “There is a great sense of community here as a small business owner,” she says. “From the LKN Chamber, to the Lake Norman Small Business Network and the Executive Women of Lake Norman, there is a great business networking system in the lake area.” In her free time, Lindsey enjoys spending time with her husband, Andrew, and children, Tallon and Kate. You’ll often find the family on the lake—boating, wakeboarding, wake surfing, and water skiing. Lindsey unwinds by doing crafts and other artsy things as well

It’s like a miniature Grand Canyon filled with water!” Additionally, Lindsey and her husband recently completed a running and biking tour of San Francisco and enjoyed an exciting excursion at 27 Waterfalls in the Dominican Republic. With all the things she enjoys, Lindsey admits that helping people is her real passion in life.
“I love to help people achieve a healthier lifestyle and better quality of life,” she states. Lindsey’s approach to healthcare is holistic and patientcentered. “Healthcare is not one-sizefits-all,” the good doctor continues. “I try to understand where each patient is coming from and really understand them as an individual.” Inspired by many people in her life, Lindsey’s mother’s words of advice are what she tries to live by: “Everyone you meet knows something you don’t … learn from them! them!”

visualization By: Leslie Ogle
Your brain, says Canfield, will work tirelessly to achieve the messages you give your subconscious mind, so when statements, images, and thoughts are the affirmations of your goals, dreams, and desires, you are destined to achieve them. One of the most popular tools for doing this is to create a vision board— • USE A BULLETIN BOARD or magnetic/dry-erase board so you
can add and remove items easily. Here you can post a collage of words, pictures, affirmations, quotes, etc. so you can see them daily. You can do this on electronic devices but that is not recommended. Be hands-on and creative! • BE SPECIFIC; if you want a new car, post the exact model, year,
color, etc. on your vision board. Want to travel? Post images of your dream destinations.
elite athletes do it; the super-rich do it—we are talking about visualization. Whether it is a job, a relationship, money, or just how to be happier in your life, you can manifest your dreams into reality. S U P E R S TA R S D O I T ;

to attract chaos in your life, so keep it organized.
• USE ONLY POSITIVE WORDS AND IMAGES that make you
smile. Be strategic in what goes on the board; sometimes clarity and simplicity will help you keep focused on what’s important.
• IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF ITEMS TO POST, you may want to
create more than one board. You could have one for your personal life and one for your professional life, for example. • LOOK AT YOUR DREAM BOARD throughout the day but
especially right before bed. This is a very powerful time for the mind to visualize and absorb. • ALSO CREATE A GRATITUDE BOARD. Listing all the things you
are grateful for keeps your mind in pursuit of those things…remember, law of attraction.
• REMEMBER TO VISUALIZE—see yourself already doing the things
you wish to achieve. Before he was famous, Jim Carrey wrote himself a check in the amount of $10 million for “acting services rendered” and postdated it for Thanksgiving 1995; he carried it in his wallet always. Years later, Carrey would sign a contract for Dumb and Dumber for $10 million—the date? Thanksgiving 1995!

The originator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul Soul® series, Jack Canfield, has taught millions of people his formula for success and personal fulfillment: “Visualization of your goals and desires accomplishes four very important things—It activates your creative subconscious which will start generating creative ideas to achieve your goal; it programs your brain to more readily perceive and recognize the resources you will need to achieve your dreams; it activates the law of attraction, thereby drawing into your life the people, resources, and circumstances you will need to achieve your goals; and it builds your internal motivation to take the necessary actions to achieve your dreams.”
• TRY NOT TO CROWD YOUR VISION BOARD. You don’t want
