“Already Gone” by Sugarland. Probably my favorite lyrics of all times. Why? Because despite knowing better, I jump on that darn train all the time. I jump even though there’s a little voice inside my head that tells me it’s a bad idea. I jump even though that voice clearly and distinctly warns, “For gosh sakes, Dana, leap and a pileup of massive proportions is certain to ensue!” Do I listen to that little voice? Of course not. It’s full steam ahead, even though I know that I’m likely to fall off and get run over by said train. I jumped when I invited that handsome man with no real job and no intentions of getting one to move in with me. I jumped when I just had to have those red (yes, red) cowboy boots that cost more than a month’s salary. I jumped when I went out with a dear friend’s ex-boyfriend in college. I jumped when I let the entire high school know my mom was out of town for the weekend and anyone was welcome to stop by. As I’ve gotten older and wiser I’ve learned to ignore that train, at least on some occasions. For instance, I did decline a dirty martini recently when after consuming one too many on a previous occasion (when I say one, I mean four); I face planted off a bar stool then left the establishment with only one shoe. The dirty martini train is one I probably will not be boarding again anytime soon. Still, far too often, I go ahead and jump. Please don’t misunderstand me: this issue is all about taking a plunge—taking chances, going for it, overcoming obstacles, and conquering your fears. And those are all really cool things. But that’s not the kind of jumping I’m referring to here. I’m talking about the jumps that result in that pileup of massive proportions my pesky inner voice warns me about—the ones that, even as we’re dangling our toes over the edge, we’re fairly certain are a really bad idea. Wouldn’t life be so much smoother if we listened to that little voice? If we stepped back from the cliff and took a deep breath? None of us have a perfect past...we’ve all jumped on the wrong train. But, we all have a clear future. Even if we’ve made an ill-advised leap, we don’t have to ride it out until the disaster at the end. It’s up to us to decide when and where to head down a different track. All we have to do is find a station in which we can coast on in, refuel, and change tracks. Let’s make a pact to ignore those runaway trains. After all, if they don’t stop at our station, then they’re not our ride. I’m looking forward to the day when I can refrain from taking that disaster-prone jump. Though I realize that my mistakes are actually gifts that have helped me learn and make changes for the better, quite frankly, I’m ready for fewer pileups and more safe arrivals—I think I’m going to start taking a plane or a boat instead. Anyway, I have to go now. There’s a new tattoo stand on the corner and I want to get there before the tattoo artist has to report back to his parole officer. But if, like me, you have a “runaway train story” you’d like to share with us, we’d love to hear about it—tell us about it on Facebook!

How did you take that plunge? My first
a dancer through my teen years. My parents took me to professional ballets, and one male dancer stood out because I could literally see every muscle in his legs. After that, I knew I wanted to be in a profession that focused on strengthening and helping others. In hopes of getting into the physical therapy program at Medical University of South Carolina, I volunteered for nine months, but unfortunately I couldn’t separate my sympathy level for people in that immense pain—to the point of my nearly passing out! I finished my healthcare management degree, and then I found my true passion with Pilates.
What makes it all work? I am fortunate to have six talented instructors with a variety of schools of training, who are creative with their classes and provide safe training sessions. At my Charlotte studio, I can see my clients walk in the door. I already have an idea just by watching them walk what we need to work on. We ask them first: “How does your body feel today?” Sessions are based upon a client’s goals, focusing on imbalances, heightening weak areas, and teaching the importance of focusing on oneself. So this really is a lifestyle? My friends and family
would say I am the most adventurous and active girl they know. You can find me on the lake, either sport paddling or doing paddleboard yoga. I enjoy the thrill of mountain biking and ride at the Whitewater Center or Fisher Farms regularly. My most recent travel adventure was a solo trip to Mt. Zion National Forest where I camped, hiked, and canyoneered.
career was as a massage therapist; I owned a small practice within a Pilates studio in Charleston. My clients saw amazing results and benefits from the combination so I became certified. A friend in the industry mentioned a Pilates studio in Davidson wanted to sell. I fell in love with Davidson and the clients!

SALAD

CONTRIBUTED BY: SERENA MURRAY, DC, MSACN
combines ingredients from three different fruits of the melon family: zucchini soaks up flavors from the gremolata dressing; watermelon adds a crisp sweetness; and pumpkin seeds give a savory crunch. The recipe can substitute many ingredients depending on your preference: different kinds of beans or peas, cucumber for zucchini, honeydew or cantaloupe in place of watermelon, or olive or walnut oil instead of grapeseed oil. This cold salad is loaded with vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, fiber, and good fats; it’s a healthy dish for any backyard barbecue. T H I S B R I G H T, R E F R E S H I N G S A L A D

I hear it all the time, “I love wallpaper, but stripping it down is horrible.” Let this be your notice, grandma’s wallpaper is dead.
Why it’s not scary... Back in the day, wallpaper was simply printed, uncoated paper. It was a mess to put up and a bigger mess to take down. Today, most wallpapers are coated with acrylic or vinyl to help make them easy to clean. Some are even completely vinyl and will come down in one sheet. The trick is having them professionally handled.
Why wallpaper now? FIRST, WHY WOULD YOU WANT WALLPAPER IN THE FIRST PLACE? DESIGNERS LOVE WALLPAPER FOR A NUMBER OF PRACTICAL REASONS:
1
Stripping Scares Me
NOT ME! I DO IT ALL THE TIME. going to be as provocative as you thought—I’m talking about wallpaper. It’s not what it used to be. Now more than any other time, wallpapers are over the top with options. We have installed huge florals, masculine grids, removable stripes, a ceiling trellis, a ceiling plaid, a quiet texture, and custom designs with playbills, cars, landscapes or watercolors. Only your imagination can stop you. O K , S O M AY B E T H I S A RT I C L E I S N ’ T
When done correctly, wallpaper can take the overall look of a room from attractive to remarkable. Take the plunge, don’t be afraid of stripping and be REMARKABLE!

To properly compose a room you need to add texture and connect all of the areas together. Furniture and draperies are great, but a room is better composed when the elements are connected. Wallpaper connects the dots. Wallpaper adds drama and when done correctly, it packs a WOW factor. Placed on one wall it anchors the room. Placed on the ceiling it adds drama. Placed in a small space it turns the space into a jewel box. Textured wallpapers add depth and importance to a room. Vinyl wallpapers protect walls and are easy to clean while adding beauty. It’s beautiful framed, as a surprise liner in a drawer or as a beautiful backing to a bookcase.
Why use a professional wallpaper hanger... As an interior designer, I have worked with many trades people and know the importance of hiring the best wallpaper hanger available. Why?
.
They know how to remove poorly installed wallpaper and repair the walls.
.
They know how to estimate how much you will need for less waste and best pricing.
.
They know how to prep the walls for long lasting wear and easy removal.
. They know how to properly match and place patterns and grasscloth columns.

Strong Body, Strong Mind BY: LESLIE OGLE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY: CHELSEA BREN
OrangeTheory Fitness-Lake Norman, was a little girl, her great-aunt Ethel asked her if she wanted to marry a doctor or a lawyer when she grew up, to which a young Kathleen answered, “Neither! I am going to grow up and be a doctor or a lawyer!” Not particularly fond of hospitals, Kathleen became an attorney, graduating in the top 10 percent of her class at the University of Dayton School of Law in Ohio. After working in Chicago and Indianapolis for some time, Kathleen moved to Florida where she met Daniel Schloss, her husband and business partner. “We met on Match.com,” she grins. “I know, super romantic, huh? But without technology we would have never met. We’ve been through everything: death, births, moves, home remodels, two babies in two years, and starting a business together. I cannot imagine not having him by my side. Our children, Delaney and Kieran, are now 3 and 5.” Kathleen has a unique ability to keep things in perspective and to focus on the positives in life, even after losing her parents, who had been both young and healthy, to cancer. For more than 16 years, she has provided a service called SurvivorSupport where she offers legal and financial counsel for families who have suffered a loss. “It is emotionally challenging,” Kathleen shares. “Although it’s rewarding to be able to help people through the worst time of their lives, it is difficult. After spending all these years listening to the pain of families losing their loved ones, while also watching both of my parents die, I just can’t say, ‘Woe is me.’ I have a fantastic, healthy life, filled with love and laughter—others are not that fortunate, so I count my blessings daily.” Daniel and Kathleen had always wanted to move to the Lake Norman area to raise their children, so they jumped at the opportunity to open OrangeTheory Fitness in Cornelius. Looking to start another studio in Mooresville, Kathleen embraces the busy lifestyle. “I also work full time as an attorney for a financial management company, so sometimes I feel like just getting the kids dressed is a victory,” she laughs. Crediting her parents for much of her success, Kathleen is humble in her accomplishments. “Don’t get me wrong,” she explains, “I am very proud of what I have achieved, but my parents were my biggest inspiration and influence; they truly made me who I am today.”

Kathleen’s mom was a very successful corporate executive, earning a graduate degree while raising two kids, working full time, and managing the household. “And she could have never done it without my dad who pushed her, cheered her on, and really was a true partner in every way,” Kathleen says. “My mom died in 2010, and I got pregnant two weeks after she passed. I believe my mom gave me that gift because she knew I couldn’t survive without her if I didn’t have children of my own. It is still hard, every day, but I feel like my family is my mom’s final gift to me. For that I am eternally grateful and take nothing for granted.”

annie LEWIS LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE LAKE
NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRE CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.
on
MOVING ACROSS THE COUNTRY…TWICE:
I grew up right outside of New York City. Some of my family moved to North Carolina, but I moved to San Francisco, and later to San Diego. California is my heart home. It’s beautiful and has so much culture. Because of family, I’ve been at Lake Norman for 13 years now, and I love it. It’s beautiful, has mostly good weather, has great opportunities, and good cost of living, too.
on TAKING THE PLUNGE:
I don’t mind personal or professional risks, and going into business for yourself is all about taking a risk. As an event planner for 20 years, I started my own business three years ago. Some days it still feels risky, but I don’t worry. I’ve become intentional. Mike Dooley said, “Thoughts become things. Choose the good ones.” It’s normal to worry when you have children to get through college, but I love the freedom of having my own business. My full name is Annette, so I always have “a net” when I jump.
on A POSITIVE NOTE:
Annie Lewis ANNIE LEWIS EVENTS DAVIDSON, NC
It’s really important to always maintain a positive attitude. Being positive, calm, and organized keep things running smoothly and limit stress. Events are so impermanent, but you want people to leave with a good memory. It’s gratifying to watch an idea that started as a seed of a vision grow into a joyful experience.
on
HOT YOGA AND ROCK CONCERTS:
In my free time, I love Bikram and other forms of yoga. I also love time with my family. I have a 16-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son. We have several rock concerts lined up this summer: Weezer, Panic at the Disco, The Cure, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. With family near Oak Island, we often visit. I love to travel, and I’d go to California at any opportunity. Annie Lewis, owner of Annie Lewis Events, lives in Davidson. Contact Annie at annielewiseventplanning@yahoo.com or 704.608.9470.

McBee is a true friend—she has a selfless desire to help others, and she always has your back. Along with her partner, Gus Testa, Kim co-owns On Point Carolinas Realty, LLC. Business partners for more than 12 years, they are like family. “Gus has inspired me so much,” Kim says. “He has helped make me successful in the real estate business. He keeps me grounded and striving to be at my best. We share the same work ethic, determination, and values. We even share the same birthday, only I was born many years later,” she grins. Kim grew up in Abingdon, a small town in Virginia. Ultimately, she found a career in the nuclear power industry, which led her to Texas, where she met husband Steve, an engineer in nuclear power. Travel was a large part of the couple’s early years until their son, Tyler, was ready to start kindergarten.
“We both felt it was time to settle in one location and be involved in Tyler’s school years,” Kim says. “We loved this area and decided to build our new home on Lake Norman. I enjoyed the building process so much that I decided to make a career change; real estate was a natural fit for me.” Kim describes On Point Carolinas Realty as a “small boutique real estate firm”—and with five experienced agents, plus one JULY 2016 |

interior designer, they are able to give professional, personal service to sellers, buyers, and builders alike. Said one client: “Kim not only served as our biggest advocate, but masterfully communicated with all parties involved during the process of closing the transaction. We developed an instant trust in her, and knew she was always looking out for our best interests. We have developed a lasting friendship with her; she is amazing.” From Maryland to Maui, the girl has traveled! Much for work but plenty for fun, Kim has lived in nearly a dozen different cities and has vacationed in the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and Hawaii, to name a few. However, despite the love of travel, Kim’s biggest passion lies just over the Smoky Mountains in Knoxville, Tennessee, home of the Vols. “Tyler is attending the University of Tennessee,” Kim explains, “but the McBee family has been avid Vol fans and UT Athletics donors for more than 23 years now. My husband, his two brothers, my sister-in-law, and our niece are all UT alumni. It’s almost a family tradition. We attend all home games, some away games, and bowl games, if they advance. Sharing this with my family is the best. We tailgate and typically have eight family members and two friends sitting in our box with us.” Kim’s positive attitude and zest for life is infectious and, says her sister, “is an inspiration to anyone who meets her.” She continues: “She is always there for anyone who needs a friend or who just needs her smile and compassion to get through their day. Her heart is the size of Texas.”
The beautiful property used for the location of Kim’s photo shoot is located at 7736 Old Post Road in Denver. The property is for sale through On Point Carolinas Realty. For more information, see their ad on page 51.

You will inevitably see Kim wearing a smile, but perhaps the grin is more of the ear-toear variety when she speaks of motherhood. “When you become a mother, you understand what it means to love another human being 100 percent unconditionally, with your whole heart. My son is my life.
We’ve been through good times and bad together. We share a lot of experiences, but the most fun is our love for the University of Tennessee. I can always count on Tyler to go with me to any game, any time, anywhere. We talk every day; and he is not only my son, but my closest friend.”

Leading The Way As we rise into leadership roles, it’s not always easy to navigate the leadership path. After all, there are as many leadership traits as there are leaders. LKN Woman talks to area leaders in the hope that we can learn from each other’s successes and failures in confronting leadership challenges. LAUREN WILSON Mooresville Dermatology Center (Piedmont HealthCare), Physician Assistant (PA-C)
Lauren Wilson is a physician assistant at Mooresville Dermatology Center, part of Piedmont HealthCare. Originally a Mooresville native, Lauren jumped at the opportunity this year to return to her hometown to practice dermatology. This facility offers a variety of services to take care of all skin care needs from cosmetics to cancer screenings. Lauren is a leader within the practice and in her personal life. At work, she strives to treat all her patients like family. “This opens the door for a more honest discussion about their concerns,” Lauren says, “and allows for the development of a treatment plan based on their preferences.” This approach allows her to make a positive impact on those around her. Her mother, Lisa Hahn, has been a strong role model. “She is thoughtful, intelligent, generous, and dedicated in every aspect of her life,” Lauren says. One way Lauren emulates her mother is by scheduling longer patient appointments, so she can tailor her treatment to each individual. The generosity is worth the investment because she and the patient can agree on a treatment plan that is both beneficial and preferential.

Estate Planning is Necessary for Everyone I frequently hear “I’ll get around to writing a will; it’s not necessary now,” or “I will worry about estate planning when I win the lottery.” Wrong! BY: ASHLEY KEVITT
the elderly or only the wealthy need to worry about estate planning are false assumptions many people make. Everyone can benefit from some level of estate planning, therefore, now is the time to take the plunge! Become proactive by planning now to ensure family harmony is maintained and to ensure assets are protected in the future. Estate planning involves different plans and outcomes for all people, depending on each particular situation. T H E I D E A S T H AT O N LY
The most important thing to emphasize is that not doing anything to plan ahead means that there is no valid will and your estate will be treated as intestate. Instead of your assets being distributed how you may have intended, they are distributed by the state laws of intestacy. This means that assets may be distributed in a manner you would not have wanted. For example, a surviving spouse with no children may have to share with in-laws. Intestate distribution deprives you of your ability to give what you want, to whom you want, when you want. To give you some control, the basic solution would be to do a will-based plan. A Will allows you to provide direction after you have died as to how you want

your assets distributed. This includes options such as leaving specific devices to certain individuals or charities, or creating testamentary trusts to hold an asset for a beneficiary following your death. This will-based plan would also be accompanied by a set of documents to make the plan complete. First, you would have the Health Care Power of Attorney to designate an agent, or person, to make your health care decisions when you no longer can. Next, you would have the Durable Power of Attorney. This document gives your agent power of various financial decisions, based on how much or how little power is appropriate in a given situation. The final necessary document to accompany a will would be a Living Will, which expresses your wishes about lifeprolonging measures, if such decisions become necessary. A more advanced option is a Revocable Living Trust. This type of estate planning helps because, unlike a will that only
takes effect at death, it can provide for you during a period of incapacity that can frequently precede your death. It also helps in distributing your assets while avoiding probate, unlike a will. A Trust with which to distribute assets means the provisions of your distributions will not be made public, there will be a more timely distribution, and the administration costs will be lower. It also allows for more flexibility in planning for the future of the surviving spouse, children, or grandchildren. Whichever planning is best for you, be sure that no planning is not an option. After all, when it comes to preparing an estate plan, planning is not hoping, is not expecting, but is achieving. AMY HALLMAN reviews The Martha’s Vineyard Mystery Series by Philip R. Craig
book
BUZZ
O N E O F M Y FAV O R I T E P L A C E S
in the world is Martha’s Vineyard. But I had avoided reading the Philip R. Craig mystery series, which is set entirely on the island. Mostly, I love nonfiction, so I was slow to this game. Late one night, I came across an online review of one of Craig’s books. What caught my attention was the reviewer said she was sorry that she’d never get to read another one of his books (Craig passed away in 2007 from cancer) because of the island description and detail. That was enough to get me to try one. Although I suspect authors in general wouldn’t like this very much, I am kind of grateful I didn’t read this series earlier. Now, I can binge-read the entire series. Each novel is short enough for a voracious reader to finish a book in a couple days. With 22 in all (One is a cookbook of the series’ characters’ favorite recipes), I have a way to go. The language is clean for the most part; the romance and the crime details are respectful and tasteful. It’s not your hardcore murder mystery or your medical examiner-type novel

with a lot of science. The only politics are island politics, and there aren’t heavy ethical dilemmas—just good old-fashioned escapism. Still, Craig’s books are strong in characterization. When I go to Martha’s Vineyard later this year, it will be hard to fight back the feeling that J.W. Jackson, et. al, are really there somewhere. Perhaps, if I just “turn right onto Edgartown-West Tisbury Road….” The stories are intricate, but not convoluted. They are realistic—no Deus ex Machina here: Characters don’t show up fortuitously or magically solve mysteries. While you can assume Jackson will solve the mystery by the end of the book, there are no repetitive plot patterns. And if you pay attention, there is enough foreshadowing to satisfy the ending. For readers who can stand only so many sappy romances and don’t want a garish crime novel, Craig’s Vineyard series will not disappoint.
Accidentally—or ignorantly, I don’t know which—I read his last book, Vineyard Chill, first. It is sad that there will be no more Vineyard mysteries—because readers are left with no sense of finality. I find myself with an ache, a hope, that the family may one day allow someone else to carry on this author’s legacy. For now, the characters are forever suspended in time—and maybe that’s part of the appeal, too.

owner and chiropractor at SouthEast Chiropractic in Denver, the path to chiropractic care wasn’t straight. A senior in college, this English major worked in her family’s chiropractic office. “Each week, my uncle and I had the same conversation,” she laughs. “He’d say: ‘You should think about chiropractic. You’d just have to go back and take more sciences.’ I’d say: ‘Uncle Rob, I’m getting my master’s in TESOL and traveling the world.’ However, once my college advisor shared the limited career advancement in teaching English to speakers of other languages, I thought maybe he was right about becoming a chiropractor.” Adding more than 40 credits of math and science after her bachelor’s degree, she started a doctorate program.

In graduate school, she found more than a degree; she met her future husband, Mike, who was a year and a half behind Jodie in the program. “I presented to his class at orientation. Afterward, he walked right up, introduced himself, and invited me to a party,” Jodie says. “His confidence blew me away, but I turned him down. Almost a year later, after he’d given up, I was ready. Mike said as long as I was a Packers fan, it’d work.” The couple moved to Lake Norman and started two practices. They had a baby. And then, this happened: “At 8 months old, our son started having spasms resembling
seizures no one could diagnose,” Jodie recalls. “As a new mother, wife, doctor, and boss, I felt I couldn’t manage everything effectively any more.” Dr. Jodie says she was fortunate to connect with someone who, within two weeks, bought her practice. Though she knew she should—and could—be home with her child, Jodie says even the right decisions can be difficult. “I felt much failure and regret,” she says. “I’d created the practice I’d always dreamed of, and it was gone. In my study one morning, I remember thinking, ‘What have I done?’ when my little guy in his jammies scooted down the steps and stood with his arms out for a hug. Then,
Their son’s health problems since resolved. The plunges continued. Dr. Jodie returned to practice a decade later, working to reestablish herself in the community. Also, she developed a cooking program, based on using food as medicine. Jodie credits her father with shaping her. “He was the salt of the Earth, artist, eccentric, farmer, college professor, and father to six children,” she says. “He hosted feasts at college, with vats of soup or pizzas made in the art-studio kilns. Summer parties at home usually included a pig and a goat on a spit. He raised his own meats and vegetables without chemicals, preservatives, or anything artificial. He was ahead of his time.” As a child, Jodie lost her mother. She says she gravitated toward teachers, aunts, and mentors who mothered and encouraged her. “Each momentous and joyous moment was tinged with grief because I couldn’t share it with her,” she recalls. “I may have grieved the most when I became a parent myself.” Dr. Jodie has learned that successful plunges, whether the kind you prepare for or the kind you’re thrust into, include moving forward—by following your instincts as well as your heart.

The mind, body, and spirit are intimately connected. Because unhealthy thoughts and emotions can create a vicious cycle that leads to unhealthy physical patterns, we can choose a victorious path that includes a positive, healing, uplifting spiral. By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nurture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.

Separating these three components has always been perplexing to me. I see people so intertwined in these three aspects of life I have a hard time teasing one out from the other. M I N D , B O DY, S P I R I T.
Simply put, the body is the physical machine that gets us from here to there. The mind contains the thoughts and emotions that continuously travel with us. The mind is typically thought to reside in our brain and also referred to and treated when unwell as “mental.” Spirit (the most widely defined) is our mental and emotional sense of purpose and our relationship with a higher being. The spirit aspect of ourselves is probably the most “human” of the animal kingdom and is believed to be the greatest distinguishing factor from other species. Some consider it our soul.
