THERE IS SOMETHING MAGICAL IN THE MONTH of March. e year is still new … with a semi-clean slate, new adventures, and so many new doors waiting to be opened and changes to be embraced. But in order to fully embrace change, we have to be willing to shut the door on some things; and closing them can be tough.
I’ve had plenty of experience with doors that are di cult to close—keeping me from embracing change. In fact, there was a time when I felt as if nearly every door in my life seemed to be screaming, “Shut me, please!” My love life, my family life, my career…none were going the way that I wanted. Even though the changes I needed to make were abundantly clear, I feared the unknown and was overwhelmed by the possibility of letting others down. So I kept trying to force those doors open until I was broken and exhausted … making it even more di cult to embrace said change.
en during a weepy afternoon of feeling sorry for myself and watching Titanic for the 117th time, I had an epiphany. Some doors need to be shut. How did this revelation come about, you ask? Why through the example of the Grand Poobah of door closing: Titanic’s heroine, Rose DeWitt Bukater. When it comes to door closers, Rose is the bomb. She closes the door on living a life that she has no interest in even though it o ers nancial security. She shuts the door on the conventions of the day, even though they assure her a place in high society. She slams the door on her toxic relationship with her ancé, even though that means facing a world she knows nothing about on her own and penniless (well, except for that 56-carat blue diamond in her pocket).
WOMEN power
Rose didn’t just teach me that some doors should be slammed shut, though; she also taught me that a closed door doesn’t mean that life is over. In fact, after closing the door on everything her life had been up to that point, Rose goes on (and on and on). She chugs beer, spits like a man, poses nude, makes love to Jack in the back of a car, and dances with abandon. I learned a lot from Rose and permanently shut those doors which immediately led to change which I wholeheartedly embraced—for it brought me new love and new beginnings.
With some help from Rose and quite a bit of re ection, I was able to discover the power and purpose in closing some doors in my life. When I nally shifted my focus away from those closed doors and paid attention, I found that other doors had opened to me—doors that brought more happiness and satisfaction into my life than ever before.
What about you? Do you have some doors you need to close, ones that are keeping you from moving forward and embracing change? Don’t worry, those new doors will open for you as if by magic, but only when you’re courageous enough to close some rst. Shutting those stubborn doors to the past, Rose proves that closed doors are almost certain to lead to new ones waiting to be opened … and a welcome change to embrace! w

SNORING AND YOUR HEALTH
It is estimated that more than 90 million people in North America snore and/ or suffer from sleep apnea, negatively affecting millions of people and their families. Healthcare providers are better understanding how detrimental untreated snoring and related sleep apnea can be to one’s overall health and wellbeing.
Dr.
Julianne Colvin (Crawford &Colvin

d health Women's Lifestyles, Women's Hearts,
WE ALL KNOW HEART DISEASE is the number one killer for men in the United States, but did you also know it’s the NUMBER ONE KILLER FOR WOMEN? Heart disease is responsible for 1 in every 3 female deaths in the United States. Between 1987 and 2017, heart disease killed more women than men.
WHY ARE WOMEN AT HIGHER RISK? Women often don’t present what are thought to be the “classic” symptoms of heart disease such as sharp chest pain and tightness. Often symptoms for women are vague such as fatigue, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, pain in one or both arms, neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen, or back. And quite often WOMEN DISMISS SYMPTOMS as acid re ux, the u or normal signs of getting older. Even more concerning: nearly two thirds of women who die from heart disease showed no previous symptoms at all.
Angiograms don’t always catch signs for coronary artery disease (CAD) in women. is is because their blockages often tend to be in the smaller arteries – a condition known as small vessel heart disease.
So what’s the good news? e good news is that 80% OF HEART ATTACKS AND STROKES CAN BE PREVENTED WITH LIFESTYLE CHANGES.
First, I tell all my patients to know your numbers. Starting in your 30s you should know your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar numbers.
(704) 842-3675
e main risk factors for heart disease are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking, inactivity, poor diet, and high stress. ere’s no getting around it. If you want to be healthier, you need to quit smoking, move more, eat healthy, and manage stress.
If you are sedentary, start walking for 30 minutes a day. Aim for 5-6 days a week. If that doesn’t sound doable, start slowly and work your way up -and it’s okay to break your workouts into 10-minute sessions throughout the day.
When eating meals, half of your plate should be veggies and you need to cut back on processed food, sugary snacks, and alcohol. Limit drinking to two drinks a day for men, and one drink a day for women.
To manage stress, you have to prioritize taking some time for yourself. Taking a few minutes each day to breathe and give your body a nice stretch. While you’re on a walk, try listening to a meditation app. If that doesn’t sound fun to you, schedule time every few days to call a friend and catch up. Even better if you can meet one over lunch or dinner.
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGES DON’T HAVE TO BE HARD. THEY JUST HAVE TO BE ONES YOU’LL STICK TO. And most importantly, if you feel like your physician isn’t taking your symptoms seriously, insist on further testing and it’s time to get a second opinion.
The path to long-term wellbeing is deeply personal.
For example, your genetics profile holds valuable information about your best approach to optimal diet, fitness, and disease prevention. We use the most advanced lab tests and focuses on lifestyle, stressors, and environmental exposures to avoid, treat or reverse health issues.
Our goal is preventative care, with a personalized wellness plan for members. I see half the number of patients that most concierge physicians do...which means I always have time for you.

We offer same-day appointments, superb 90-minute annual physical exams, a “waitless” waiting room, no-rush appointments with our physicians and a health and fitness coach. Members have 24-hour, seven-day access to me, including my cell phone number.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW NURSE PRACTITIONER, PAMELA STRANGE MSN, FNP
""I grew up in a small town in southern Virginia (South Boston, Virginia, home of the famous race car drivers, Ward and Jeff Burton). I graduated from Halifax County High School and initially I had hopes of being a pharmacist. My Husband, being a minister, brought us to the Statesville area to assist in the ministry. We recently celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary in December. We have three adult children: Tyrone III, Carla, and Tyrelle. I also have one granddaughter. When not at work, I enjoy spending time with family (especially my husband and granddaughter) and traveling. My favorite food is seafood, namely fish, and anyone who knows me knows that I love gummy bears. We enjoy taking frequent weekend
excursions, and I love sports, especially college basketball... I am a major DUKE fan!
"I have always known that I wanted to be in healthcare. I initially attended George Mason University straight out of high school, but met my now husband and fell in love. I began my nursing career as an LPN and then received my RN certifications-ultimately obtaining my MSN/FNP degree in 2017. My mother was diagnosed with NSCLC (a type of lung cancer) and succumbed to it 20 years ago. I also have had other family and friends with this disease and that is what has drawn me to oncology. My faith in God and the support I receive from my husband, other family, church family, and friends is what keeps me going."
Southern Oncology is excited to have Pam Strange, FNP join our team! Pam brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. She will be working closely with our oncologist through chemotherapy teaching appointments, disease and symptom management, clinical follow up appointments, and survivorship care plans. Pam will be seeing patients in the Mooresville and Statesville locations.
Your Care ... Our Calling
Who inspired you the most? Without a doubt my parents … they taught me the value and necessity of a strong work ethic from a young age. My dad worked as an electrician at a General Motors manufacturing plant his entire career, and my mom worked as a medical transcriptionist. They’ve been married for over 68 years and have always been an inspiration for me, as have my older siblings. My family instilled in me how important it is to be honest, live with integrity, work hard, treat people fairly, and to face challenges head-on. My Dad is 88 and still likes to remind me, “don’t do anything half-way” so that mantra has helped to keep me determined in the face of any adversity as well as hone my skill set as a problem solver.

BY DESIGN LENDING / BORROW HAPPY®Amy Mahar is partner and founder of By Design Lending/Borrow Happy® and can be reached via www.borrowhappy.com or call/text 704.577.2777. With six decades of collective experience, Amy and her team expertly design mortgages and gently walk you through the lending process.
Have you always had such a strong work ethic and “Can-Do” attitude? Ambition, determination, and grit are part of my DNA. When I was a young newly promoted sales manager back in 1997, I didn’t know much about leading people, but I did get a sense that more tenured colleagues were afraid to go outside their comfort zone and that contentment led to mediocrity. I always knew I wanted more and could make a difference … I had big dreams and I was eager, ready, and was pretty fearless. Throughout my life I’ve learned that sometimes a bit of unbridled enthusiasm and commitment to action make all the difference.
Working in such a highly complex and regulated industry, how do you help folks Borrow Happy? In 2008, as the housing crisis was unfolding, I worked for one of the world’s largest investment banks, so I got to experience that economic crisis firsthand. The issues and products that plagued the industry in the 2008 housing meltdown have long been eradicated, but we are left with a juggernaut of regulations that often contradict one another and have made the process more difficult than is necessary. Part of what I find rewarding is to leverage my experience to help people navigate that complexity and simplify the process. Communication and transparency are so important in today’s climate … I am a true advocate for my clients and am constantly thinking about how to make the process easier for them and my referral partners. Let’s be honest, no one gets excited about the mortgage itself, it’s the house at the end of the transaction that makes everyone happy! It’s my job to weave “happy” into the process! We take our business seriously but try to keep a sense of humor and great communication around regulations outside our control.
With a busy career and two teenagers at home, what keeps it all in sync? In my previous corporate life, I traveled extensively … a typical year included 125 nights in a hotel room. Frankly, I didn’t feel like I was doing anything well other than accumulating frequent flier miles. That lifestyle led to a lack of fulfillment which ultimately was behind the decision to start my own firm. At this point in my life, I’ve learned to say no to many extraneous things so I can prioritize my health, my kids, and my clients. I am very disciplined about time management. I also try to make sure my kids (Jack, 19, and Eva, 16) take on more responsibilities and do so with the same work ethic, determination, and accountability that their grandparents exemplified.
First, rule out other causes such as alcohol use, medications, excessive physical activity, lack of sleep, unhealthy eating habits, or caffeine (caffeine affects the adrenals which trigger counterproductive stressors in the body).

or something more? FATIGUE
IN OUR HUSTLE AND BUSTLE WORLD, rest is not prioritized and fatigue feels constant. But how do you know when it might be something more serious? According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic fatigue is di erent than being sleepy or exceedingly tired in that it lasts longer and is more debilitating. “It’s a nearly constant state of weariness that develops over time and diminishes your energy and mental capacity. Fatigue at this level impacts your emotional and psychological well-being.”
Chronic fatigue can be a sign of congestive heart failure, which happens when your heart doesn't pump as well as it should. It can also indicate anemia (the leading cause of fatigue in women), urinary tract infections, diabetes, bromyalgia, or thyroid issues. Here are some Fatigue Facts to help you decide if it’s time to see your doctor—
If your fatigue persists for two weeks or more despite efforts to rest, eat right, reduce stress, exercise appropriately, and drink plenty of fluids.
If you experience shortness of breath, fast heartbeat, dizziness, or extreme pain such as severe headaches.
Anxiety, depression, grief, and stress will cause fatigue, and if these are persistent in nature, consult your physician. w
For more information on fatigue and all its symptoms, causes, and treatments, contact the Mayo Clinic at www.mayoclinic.org.
If you find simple, daily chores too much to handle.
Snoring, Sleep Apnea, And Your Overall Health
IT IS ESTIMATED THAT MORE THAN 90 MILLION people in North America snore, negatively affecting more than 160 million people and families. It is a common complaint and discussion with patients in my dental chair, as we healthcare providers are better understanding how detrimental untreated snoring and related sleep apnea can be to one’s overall health.
What causes snoring?
Snoring happens when the ow of air through your mouth and/or nose is blocked. Some people snore occasionally during allergy season or when they have a sinus infection, due to temporary nasal congestion. However, most snoring is a result of reduced airway space in the throat. Muscles and soft tissues of the mouth relax during sleep, allowing the lower jaw to fall back, (especially with back-sleeping), compromising the amount of air ow. Tongue size and extra weight around the neck can compound the degree of obstruction. As air attempts to pass through the constricted space, its increased velocity vibrates the soft tissues of the throat, producing the snoring we hear. Snoring can itself be a symptom of a health problem called obstructive sleep apnea. ose with sleep apnea have multiple extended pauses in breath when they sleep. ese breathing lapses cause lower-quality sleep and a ect the body’s supply of oxygen, leading to potentially serious health consequences.
What are the risks of untreated snoring or sleep apnea?
What can be done to stop snoring or correct sleep apnea?
Dr. Julianne Colvin is a family and cosmetic dentist who shares ownership of Crawford & Colvin Family and Cosmetic Dentistry located at 16525 Birkdale Commons Parkway, Suite 300, in Huntersville. You can reach Dr. Colvin at 704.895.5850 or schedule online at www.LakeNormanDentist.com.
Because of the a ected oxygen balance in the body, untreated snoring and sleep apnea raises dangerous risks for various cardiovascular problems. Produced strain on the heart increases blood pressure, creating a greater risk of coronary artery disease, heart arrhythmias, heart attack, and stoke. GERD is also more likely to be present in those who snore due to disordered airway ow and pressure changes, which a ect the contents of the stomach and esophagus. In addition, interrupted sleep is associated with mental and emotional challenges, such as anxiety and depression. Hormone imbalances and weight gain are tied to a lack of quality sleep. Sleepiness during the day can also interfere with mental awareness and increase risk for injury and accidents.
Talk to a doctor or dentist if you are overly sleepy during the day, if you snore often or very loudly, or if a partner notices that you sometimes stop breathing altogether. You may be referred for a sleep study to con rm the degree of snoring and/or sleep apnea. If diagnosed with a problem, a common treatment is the nightly use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. ese devices push air through a mask and into the airway to keep it open during sleep. ese are tolerated with varying degrees of di culty. An e ective alternative to a CPAP machine, is a dentistprescribed mouthpiece or snore guard. It is a less cumbersome, a ordable, noninvasive snoring solution that has proven highly e ective in maintaining airway space. It is a custom- tted dental device, worn in the mouth as upper and lower trays connected by sidebars, which holds the lower jaw in a slightly forward position while sleeping. It can be adjusted by a sleep-trained dental professional for maximum comfort and e ectiveness. w
3 tips to successfully
CO-PARENT WITH AN EX
YOU’RE A SEPARATED OR DIVORCED PARENT,
IF
I know how di cult it can be – especially when it comes to successfully, and respectfully, co-parenting with your former partner. In addition to being a Collaborative Divorce attorney, I also have personal experience as a mother of ve with two separate parenting agreements. My ex and I divorced nearly 15 years ago, and we experienced the ups and downs of co-parenting our two children. When I married my now husband, who has three boys, we learned to navigate and balance both parenting agreements with all of our children.
It was certainly challenging over the years, yet strangely rewarding at the same time. Keeping positive relationships with both parents is important in a healthy shared parenting relationship. As a trained coparenting coach, here are my top three tips for a successful experience with your parenting partner:
Robin M. Mermans, Esq., is the owner of ROAD to RESOLUTION:Divorce Mediation and Collaborative Law. . Treat Your Relationship Like a Business
While you and your ex-partner have history, the emotions and difficulties of your marriage don’t belong in the co-parenting relationship. I work with my clients to help them create plans to establish a business-like relationship with their parenting partner. Keep the discussions strictly about your children and what’s going on in their lives. All communication in person and via phone calls, text, or emails should be kept professional and respectful no matter how hard it may be at the time. Over time, if you are fortunate enough to develop a relationship where your boundaries are honored and respected, you may be able to adjust your communication style in the future.
. Know the Right Time and the Right Place
Just like there’s a right time, there’s also a wrong time. Same goes for right place versus wrong place. Don’t talk about issues with your parenting partner during your arranged pick-ups and drop-offs because those are definitely the wrong times and wrong places. As you likely know, pick-ups and dropoffs can be emotional and the last thing you probably want to deal with is feedback from your ex. Instead, if there are issues or matters that need to be discussed, schedule a time for a phone call or arrange an in-person meeting without your children present.
3 2
. Take the High Road, Even When It’s Hard
It’s so difficult to be the bigger person, but for the sake of your children and their wellbeing, it’s worth it. There is a near guarantee that your ex will do something that makes you mad just like you’re likely to do something that makes them mad. It may or may not be intentional but take a deep breath and think about your reaction. Try to walk away and come back to the conversation later or maybe no response is the best response. Don’t put fuel on the fire or engage in an argument. Remember, conversations should only be about your children or how something might impact them. w
AND FROM THEAshes, Beauty
itMAY NOT FEEL LIKE IT WHEN we are going through life’s difficulties, but the sun will still rise tomorrow. Even if it’s shrouded in clouds, there is always that hopeful silver lining … or at least a warm, promising glow. Life is built this way— perhaps not evident at the time, but remarkable things are hoisted into action at the very moment you are being tested. A wise man once said that tragedies often become comedies and they better become comedies real fast or else you’re in a lot of trouble.

never had it so good!
MY HUSBAND OF 33 YEARS calls me an “indoor dog” and he is right! I love interiors and let’s be real, I LOVE sleeping! My bed is my fort; warm, happy and soft. Who could ask for anything more?
In college we grabbed a bed in a bag and thought it was perfect. I have, however, come to learn the joys of layering the proper bedding for the best experience. Here are the layers you should consider.
a. Add a bed scarf at the foot of the bed for a finished look.
Starr Miller Founder and Principal, StarrMiller Interior Design
b. Decorative Pillows
– Less is more for most of us. Keep to essentials like shams and a lumbar pillow or neck roll. No one wants to move pillows around every morning and night.
7 I suggest silk pillowcases as they can reduce allergens (think silk cocoon warding off intruders), prevent skin irritation and face creasing, help skin retain moisture and protect your hair from frizz and breakage.
6 The top of bed covering can be a duvet, comforter, or matelassé/ quilted spread. This layer is what provides warmth and insulation. It is important to choose one that is the right size for your bed, as well as one that is made of breathable materials, such as cotton or down. I have found this to be a completely personal decision. Everyone has an opinion, and everyone is right!
5 Blankets are up next and can be made in wool, cotton or even a very lightweight feather down, which I prefer.
4 Seersucker sheet can sit on top of the top sheet and act as a cool layer to hold in heat during the winter or use simply as your top layer in the summer. You will find them used at fine hotels such as the Cloister at Sea Island. They are easy to care for and require no ironing.
3 Sheets are what will come into direct contact with your skin, so it is important to choose ones that are comfortable and breathable. There is a movement among some people to do away with the top sheet and only use the duvet. I am not on this bandwagon. The top sheet is my favorite layer. Sheets can be made of linen, cotton, bamboo, silk or microfiber. My favorite is cotton percale as they tend to have a cool, crisp feel to the touch. Two things to consider: Yes, thread count is important, but even more important is the quality of the thread. The longer the thread fiber, the less wrinkles you will have and the smoother it will feel to the touch. Also, the longer the thread, the higher the price.
2 The mattress topper adds an extra layer of comfort and support. Toppers come in a variety of materials, such as memory foam, latex, wool, or feathers. You can customize your sleep experience. The one you don’t read about often is wool which can help support your body while being resilient to body impressions, it is moisture wicking and breathable.
Allied ASID, IDS, CAPS
“Night, night”, as my mother would say.

activated charcoal
CONNECT WHERE IT COUNTS!
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL IS YOUR basic charcoal that has been combined with activating agents to make it more porous, allowing drugs and toxins to bind to it before being absorbed into the body. Because of its absorbent qualities, activated charcoal is used in water filters, nutritional supplements, and is often used to treat drug overdoses or certain types of poisonings. Although capsules seem to be the most common, activated charcoal is more convenient in powder form, and many prefer the charcoal made from coconut shells because it produces a high-quality, extremely adsorbent coal without harming the environment. It can be purchased over-the-counter at most large retailers and drugstores.
Accidental Poisoning or Drug Overdose
According to the Mayo Clinic, activated charcoal should be used as soon as the overdose or poison ingestion is discovered, preferably within an hour. However, they specify that it is not effective on all toxins and drugs, especially corrosive agents. Always contact a poison control center immediately and let them know you have activated charcoal on hand.
Stomach Bugs/ GI Problems
Activated charcoal helps to clean the digestive tract by bonding to the toxins or bacteria that cause food poisoning. It has also been known to aid in the relief of stomach cramps, acid reflux, indigestion, and gas.
WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT DO?Facial Mask
Combine a teaspoon each of activated charcoal powder, water, and aloe vera gel to draw impurities from your skin.
Bug Bites
Teeth Whitening
The natural adhesive qualities help with surface stains such as coffee, tea, and wine.
Combine with baking soda and apply to bite; cover with bandage. The activated charcoal draws out the toxins and helps relieve the sting. w
For more information on activated charcoal, visit the Mayo Clinic website at www.mayoclinic.org, the Natural Medicine Journal at www.naturalmedicinejournal.com, or e U.S. Food and Drug Administration at www.fda.gov. Consult your physician before taking or using activated charcoal.
dances
waves
at was back in 2005, and Jammi had been working in corporate banking until IcyWakes opened its doors. While her background may have been in number crunching, her real love was in getting her customers stoked to hit the surf.
“We love to make special connections with people and build relationships within the community,” she smiles. “For sure we are in the business to sell boards, but mainly we love that customers trust us and come to us for our level of personalized service and knowledge—whether through our products or through our watersports lessons and camps. “What I want most is for people to come visit the shop and feel like they have received great customer service and acquired the knowledge and gear they were seeking.”
Although Jammi’s passion is helping her customers hook up with whatever they might need, she recognizes that retail is not always, well, totally tubular. Much like sur ng, you have to be alert at all times, be keenly aware of your surroundings, and catch the appropriate wave when it presents itself. “Running a retail store can be challenging,” she notes, “especially in today’s economic climate. You must wear a lot of hats and ll many roles.”
SURFING LAKE NORMAN STYLE!
WHEN YOU GROW UP STEPS AWAY from some of the most gorgeous beaches on the planet, it’s no surprise that watersports will be in your blood. Just ask Jammi Park, owner of IcyWakes Surf Shop in Cornelius.
is beach-loving Florida native spent her childhood in Key West and all her school years in Jacksonville. When she visited North Carolina, which was fairly often, she was asked to bring the latest in surf gear from the local surf shop near her home in Florida. It was then she and her family had an “ah-ha” moment to open a surf shop
in the waterloving community of Lake Norman.
“ e lake area was growing so much,” Jammi recalls, “and wakeboarding and wakesur ng were too, so we decided to create our own version of a surf shop but cater to lake watersports and activities.”
With all the demands of owning a business, Jammi recognizes that she might not always have the perfect work/life balance, but she does try to keep a healthy perspective. “I prioritize time for friends and family,” she says, “and if I fail to accomplish this at some point, I do not dwell on it but just try to do better next time.
Having people who love and encourage you at home is equally important and Jammi is blessed in that department with an incredibly supportive and involved family and husband. “My husband and I have very close relationships with our extended family here and in Florida,” she gratefully acknowledges. My family and support system are very engaged, connected, and encouraging … for me, that is completely invaluable.” w
MUCH LIKE SURFING, YOU HAVE TO BE ALERT AT ALL TIMES, BE KEENLY AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS, AND CATCH THE APPROPRIATE WAVE WHEN IT PRESENTS ITSELF."
Steakhouse Chicken
with honey mustard
One of our favorite steakhouse restaurants makes a delightful chicken dish and now you can easily make your own version at home. You will need some bacon so plan on two pieces for each chicken breast.
TIP:
For an easier, less-messy way to cook bacon, bake in the oven on parchment paper at 400 degrees for about 15-20 minutes or desired crispiness. The precooked bacon at the grocery is also an easy option.
If you’re a fan of the honey mustard sauce, I recommend doubling that part of the recipe since it’s great for dipping!
You will need:
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (they need to be about a half-inch thick)
Seasoning Salt
Bacon
1/4 cup regular mustard
1/3 cup of honey
2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
2 cups of grated Colby/Jack cheese
Directions:
1 Sprinkle chicken breasts with seasoning salt and prepare bacon.
2 Sauté chicken (in bacon fat if you have any) for 3 to 5 minutes on each side or until browned and then place chicken in a 9x13 baking dish.
3 For the honey mustard, simply combine the mustard, honey, mayonnaise, and dried onion flakes.
4 Spread a bit of the honey mustard on each piece of chicken and then layer with mushrooms, crumbled bacon, and grated cheese.
5 Bake in a 350-degree oven for about 30 minutes or until the chicken has reached 165 degrees or juices run clear when cut into. Serve with the honey mustard sauce. w
How To Handle A
tooth fairy
coma. Far away from any thoughts of Tooth Fairies!
I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A blissful slumber when I felt a living, creepy crawly, movement on my arm. I was instantly awake. My eyes ew open to nothing but darkness. I touched my arm and felt nothing. Must have been a dream. Except, what was that? I heard a barely discernible sound of someone breathing close to my ear. I bolted up in bed and said out loud, “Who’s there?!”
“Me.”
It was a child. I found myself caught between relief and annoyance. I only had one child who had the eerie ability to stand in the dark, quietly staring at me for minutes.
“Savannah. What’s wrong?” I exhaustedly asked while sinking back into my pillow.
“ e Tooth Fairy didn’t come,” she informed me.
Crap. at’s right. Her tooth. Last night she had nally won the 11-day battle against the tooth with roots of steel. She’d walked into my bedroom at 8:14pm to share the news. Right as I’d sunk down - giddily childless, into my loveseat with my precious bowl of moose tracks ice cream and Net ix queued up. Unfortunately, I entered into an exhausted, sugar-induced
I tuned back into Savannah telling me she’d found the tooth still under her pillow. I didn’t know what time it was. But it was dark. is worked in my favor.
“It’s the middle of the night Savannah. e Tooth Fairy has a lot of kids to get to and just hasn’t gotten here yet. And if you’re awake when it’s your turn, she’ll skip you.”
Pretty sure I saw the panic in her eyes pierce through the darkness. Boom. She was gone. I made a mental note to slip into her room rst thing after my alarm went o , before waking anyone up.
is topic has come up enough times that I know Tooth Fairy forgetting is a universal problem. e common themes throughout are the imaginative redemption stories I’ve heard and the need to have supplies on hand for the forgetful and non-forgetful.
So, what options do you have when the Tooth Fairy forgets? Here is a list of the top three redemption stories I have heard from fellow parents:
Write a quick letter (disguised handwriting) addressed to the child, including details of a fairy dust shortage, apologies, and anticipated arrival date. Insert it into that day’s mail.
Explain to your child that the tooth is likely not clean enough. The Tooth Fairy only brings gifts for the best teeth. Suggest they wash it and try again that night.
If someone in the house is sick, say, “Well, the Tooth Fairy doesn’t come when someone in the house is sick … she’ll come when everyone is well.”
How many times have you been up against the clock and don’t have cash? And does money really support the full magic of a child’s imagination? Instead, have a secret stash of a variety of Tooth Fairy gifts that come with conveniently pre-written tiny letters in sparkling envelopes, each o ering a positive life lesson. e unique tiny treasures from Fairyland delight children and parents alike. It’s a great way to enhance children’s experiences, boost their imaginations, and allow them to Hold the Magic of childhood for as long as possible. w

We know how busy life can get—kids, work, family, friends … sometimes just getting dinner on the table is a Herculean feat! So in an effort to save our readers some time, effort, and money here are a few tips, tricks, and hacks that might come in handy in your busy world!
Cultivate and nurture your relationships.
Study after study has shown that those who have loving relationships/friendships have lower rates of anxiety and depression, higher selfesteem, and greater empathy. Strong, healthy relationships can also help to strengthen your immune system, help you recover from disease, and may even lengthen your life.
Life is like a box of chocolates. Research has shown that chocolate boosts mood, which makes sense—it’s yummy! But according to multiple studies, regular consumption of a small amount (150 calories or less) of dark chocolate can reduce your risk of heart disease by as much as 30 percent.
TIPS, & HACKS
HEALTH & FITNESS
Get outside and take the stairs! Purchase a pedometer and watch the miles stack up! Spending time outdoors (even in brief spurts) is directly associated with greater vitality. A breath of fresh air will give you more energy throughout the day. And take the stairs when you have the option … little things make a BIG di erence!
Eggs-ellent!
Standing Room Only
Sitting at a desk all day puts pressure on the base of your spine, leading to long-term issues such as back pain and, in extreme cases, herniated disks. Experts recommend that you switch to an adjustable standing desk—with at least half of your day in the standing position.
Hardboiled eggs are a great low-calorie snack, but you’ll want fresh eggs for snacking. To test the freshness, put the egg in a bowl of tap water—eggs fresh enough to cook with (or scramble or fry) will sink; eggs perfect for hardboiling will sink on their side; bad eggs will oat.

THE AGE OF AQUARIUS!
THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED AGE OF AQUARIUS is upon us. This means Pluto, the slow-moving planet of transformation is going into the sign of Aquarius. This 21-year movement begins this month on March 23rd.
This completes the Capricorn cycle that began in 2008. That cycle was about breaking down the old traditional structures that no longer benefited us, relating to corporations, governments, and hierarchies that rule from the top down. This movement into Aquarius brings power back to the people, a greater sense of humanity and community. It embraces the new, the original, and the alternative.
With this huge generational shift of energy, our own lives will be changed by Pluto moving into a new part of our birth chart. Pluto often breaks away what we no longer need and transforms us to a new and better situation. The key to working with Pluto is to try and roll with the changes and not build resistance. Working together to build the new. w
Having studied astrology for years and attending e London University of Astrology, Emmaleen Muldoon now works with clients here in Lake Norman and all over the world to analyze their birth chart. She also teaches workshops here in the Lake Norman area and o ers free astrological updates on YouTube and Instagram at Emmaleen’s Astrology. For more see www.emmaleensastrology.com.
So where will Pluto be changing your life? Here is a quick guide by rising sign:
Aries: Your friendship groups and associations are up for a revamp; building new circles will be important and rewarding.
Taurus: Your vocation, career, and reputation are up for renewal and change.
Gemini: Your philosophy, education, travel, and outlook will be broadened and expanded.

Leo: Your closest relationships, business and personal, are subject to change and transformation, leaving behind what you no longer need.
Virgo: There will be huge changes to your 9-to-5 life, your habits, and routine. This is a good time to look at building positive changes to your health.
Libra: What you do for fun and your creativity will be important and be built upon.
Scorpio: The home, relationships with your parents, roots, and your heritage are subject to change.
Sagittarius: Studying and relationships with siblings as well as taking short trips will become more important.
Capricorn: Your income, possessions, and sense of belief are up for renewal.
