Wizard of Oz before Dorothy oils him up as I make my way to the Keurig machine in the mornings. Just as rust immobilized his hinges, arthritis is taking its toll on my creaky, achy joints.

Though I’m not proud to admit it, as my arthritis symptoms worsened, I found myself comparing myself to others quite a bit, lamenting that I could no longer do things I saw others my age doing seemingly with ease. In fact, I became so focused on the negatives that I couldn’t see anything good around me at all. Not only did I wish I had the beautiful hands of the woman next to me in line at the grocery or the scar-free legs of the lady playing volley ball on the beach, the comparisons snowballed until every which way I turned there was someone with something better than me. A bigger bank account. Better behaved dogs. A svelte body that fits into a pair of skinny jeans. Beautiful hair that doesn’t defy the laws of gravity. A nicer mother-in-law.

Though you’ve probably already guessed, the comparisons didn’t help my arthritis. They also didn’t get me a nicer mother-in-law. In fact they were nothing but a colossal waste of time and energy because regardless of how much money I make, there will always be someone with more. No matter if my hair suddenly decides it will indeed adhere to scientific certainties and grow into a magnificent mane, there will always be someone with even better locks. And even if my body were arthritis free, there would always be someone younger and healthier for me to compare myself to.

Though I took the long way around the barn, I eventually realized that the key to my happiness and well-being isn’t trying to get what others have—it’s being thankful for my own journey and the many blessings that are mine to enjoy along my way. Sure, jars are now my arch-nemesis and custom insoles are my new best friend, but the joys in my life far outweigh the aches and pains. Of course I am thankful for the biggies: family and friends; love and health. But there’s little things, too, that cause my cup to runneth over: good hair days (they happen!); the smile on my husband’s face when he discovers a new favorite craft beer; a sloppy, on-the-lips lick from my pups; the smell of a bookstore; tan lines; taking off my bra at the end of the day; discussing a good book with my sons; whip cream squirted right out of the can into my mouth; the smell of that coffee I mentioned.

Oh, and artificial joints…how could I forget those? Thanks to that advanced technology, I know that no matter what these creaky body parts of mine decide to do, I can keep on keeping on. My keeping on might involve doing the Tin Man Shuffle through the house to get to my morning cup of joe, but you can bet I’ll be counting my blessings every waddle and wobble DANA JORDAN along the way way. w PUBLISHER

Success might be defined as notoriety, a dollar amount, or simply a Gold Star for the day. I view “success” differently; there is not a tangible unit of measure. But I have found that all successes, no matter the definitions, have twists and turns, valleys and peaks, tears of frustration, and great celebrations. It is lined with gratitude for your “herd” – family, friends, partners, co-workers, sponsors, even horses! A support system which allows for a balance between adventure, emotions, hard work, dedication, commitment, relaxation, and love.

It seems surreal to have transformed my childhood passion for horses into an efficacious business focused on ground-based counseling and wellness with horses. To watch my team grow and shift in new dimensions is thrilling.

A new chapter for Willow Equine emerged in 2017 … truly a message from God. We would continue our work providing counseling and wellness with horses focused on healing from trauma, but greater success would come with our focus on the population we so proudly serve—America’s veterans, first responders, and their families. Service and trauma affect the entire family differently; healing looks and feels different, too. The common thread is the conscious commitment to heal. They offer safe reflection and compelling feedback for fears and anxieties. Horses take what is held inside and translate it into tangible experiences. This allows for insightful understanding, new perspectives, and deep healing.

Soul to Sole Connection became the impetus for change. A change in how society perceives mental health, especially for the military. We have changed the lives of countless local veterans and have witnessed individuals heal their wounds and rediscover who they truly are. Often, they have felt lost in the trauma, yet given time and support, clients are able to uncover, release, grow, and reconnect. Everyone can set an intention, move forward, and succeed! w

Experts agree that pets excel as therapeutic agents, and dogs in particular are an antidote to depression. Studies have shown that dogs decrease both blood pressure and stress levels and improve overall mood and wellbeing.

“My dog brings a lot of joy to seniors,” explains Vickie Blair, who volunteers with her dog, Driver, at the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. “What’s more, dog visits can enhance cognitive and emotional processes ... therapy dogs can be of great comfort for the entire family, especially if someone can no longer take care of a pet at home.” The Alliance of Therapy Dogs brings their pups to you— including but not limited to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, mental health institutions, schools, hospitals, college campuses, and to private homes as well. “When Driver and I visit patients,” Vickie adds, “it helps break up daily boredom (for everyone!) and stimulates the mind in dramatic ways ... we love to see the patients’ smiles and how they light up when we arrive ... you can tell it makes a huge difference in their day, and that is priceless!”

With more and more seniors being cared for by family, only about three percent are in nursing homes or other care facilities; and seniors are not only living longer, but they are living in health and happiness. A study at Harvard showed that the majority of seniors describe their life in positive terms using words such as “peace, health, happiness, and contentment.”

Mental Health Notes While depression and anxiety are the most common complaints among seniors, these mental health challenges are NOT a normal part of aging. Often it is due to isolation, medications, changes in living situations, and the simple fact that resources are not available to so many of our seniors.

As a result, health issues can go undiagnosed and do not get proper treatment.

normal part of aging. We all have forgotten where we parked the car or have occasionally missed a doctor’s appointment. However, serious memory problems may signal something more worrisome than normal age-related changes — Alzheimer’s disease.

“If Alzheimer’s disease is detected early,” explains Dr. Maria Tletee of Iredell Internal Medicine, “it will prompt medical intervention and initiation of treatments that can effectively slow down the disease’s progression. Additionally, it aids patients and their families in making essential adjustments to sustain a higher quality of life for an extended period.”

Alzheimer’s is an irreversible, degenerative brain disorder that primarily impacts memory, cognition, and behavior. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and that number is expected to grow to nearly 13 million by 2050.

Recognizing the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease can be challenging because everyone experiences some degree of memory loss as they age, but there are some distinctions. Below, Dr. Tletee lists some of the most common early signs of Alzheimer’s, as well as examples of normal age-related forgetfulness:

Memory Loss

Memory loss, like frequent forgetfulness, especially regarding recent events, is one of the most noticeable early symptoms of Alzheimer’s. For instance, someone might struggle to recall where they placed their keys or the names of familiar people.

on ALWAYS LOVING THE GREAT OUTDOORS I grew up as one of six kids in Dearborn, Michigan. With so many of us, my parents wisely taught us the joy of outdoor play. When I majored in parks and recreation administration at Central Michigan University, I didn’t consciously understand how important recreation and leisure are to a full, healthy, and happy life; it just seemed like a fun profession. As it turns out, I was right! I also went back later in life to receive my master’s degree in recreation and leisure services administration from Florida State University. on MUCH-NEEDED SOLO TIME It’s probably no surprise that as a parks and recreation director, my favorite place to play is in the dirt. There’s nothing like an early morning stroll around the yard with a hot cup of coffee in hand, dreaming of how to make our little corner of the world more beautiful. I also enjoy time on my Peloton, running or walking on the local golf course at dawn, thrifting at area shops, and reading fiction about female characters who triumph over something and end up strong and happy.

I believe that public art is one of the strongest contributors to a vibrant community, and I am excited about Mooresville’s commitment to growing this program. I want art all over town that surprises and delights our residents and visitors. I am equally enthusiastic about our new Arts & Events Division. The staff has done an incredible job in their first year providing large-scale special events to celebrate the town’s 150th anniversary. After high school, Heather attended Appalachian State University and majored in business and marketing education with a concentration in child psychology. Andrew grew up in Boone, so we feel the most at peace when we are back on the mountain.”

The couple moved to Cornelius in 2006 when Heather began her teaching career at Lake Norman High School. They have two children—Hudson, 14, and Hampton who is 10. When her children were born, Heather decided to take some time off work but returned to a smaller setting at Community in Christ Preschool (CIC). “My years at CIC filled a place in my heart that I missed with teaching.

After all, it’s been a few decades since John Gray popularized the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. And as much as we love sharing women’s stories, we decided it was time to lend the Martians of LKN our ear, too. This month we share the perspectives of Dr. Tyler Wurmlinger of Cosmetic Dentistry of the Carolinas.

I don’t have a ton of free time, but I always carve out time for exercise. Whether it is running or lifting weights, I enjoy staying active. My other passion is travel. It can be hard with a busy schedule, but my wife, Isabel, and I try to do as much as we can. My favorite destination (thus far!) is Santorini, Greece. It’s absolutely beautiful!

I grew up in Lexington, Michigan. I knew I wanted to be a cosmetic dentist from a young age. I had a traumatic accident in middle school that significantly affected my confidence. At the time, the dentist who treated me really inspired me to pursue a career in dentistry. He encouraged me to follow a path that would help people who are insecure about the appearance of their teeth.

I will never forget the difference he made in my life. In my 10 plus years as a dentist, I’ve come to understand how important it is to develop trusting relationships with people – patients and family alike.

Recently, I completed a course on dental implants, and I am looking forward to expanding my practice to help an even broader scope of patients.

“My favorite experience,” Jennifer shares, “was a recent trip to the Azores—the islands off the coast of Portugal. My husband and I spent 14 days hiking the rims of volcanos, swimming in beautiful natural pools, and ascending some of the highest peaks in Portugal.

It was fabulous!”

Barrie’s globetrotting chart includes Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, and much of the United States. “I went to Utah recently,” she says, “with several of my running buddies. We were there to run a race, but we carved out time to celebrate my birthday and visit some of the canyons and national parks.

It was wild, untouched, and absolutely gorgeous.”

While these adventure seekers will always make time for extracurriculars, they remain dedicated to their families and their soaring real estate business … which to them is a “relationship business.”

“Helping others reach their real estate goals and building successful relationships within and around the industry is what fuels me … it is what keeps me motivated every day,” Barrie gratefully acknowledges.

We know how busy life can get—kids, work, family, friends … sometimes just getting dinner on the table is a Herculean feat! So in an effort to save our readers some time, effort, and money here are a few tips, tricks, and hacks that might come in handy in your busy world!

Crank Up Your Cranberries Stir-in one (or more) of the following to one can of whole or jellied cranberry sauce: 2 tbsp. orange juice plus 1 tsp. of finely grated orange peel ½ can of mandarin oranges ½ cup pineapple

When You’re Tired of Turkey Pizza Bubbles: Similar to Monkey Bread, quarter biscuits from a can, put the pieces in a bowl, and coat with spaghetti sauce, about a cup. Gently mix in a cup of shredded mozzarella and then place in a greased casserole dish. Bake at 375 for 15-20 minutes. Top it off with more cheese (to your heart’s delight!) and any other toppings; bake for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese bubbles.

Just line your cooler with aluminum foil and keep things toasty warm.

Awesome Hack Alert Use your dishwasher to cook vegetables. Just put veggies such as green beans, asparagus, or carrots in a mason jar, add a tablespoon of butter (optional), a bit of water (about an inch), and some seasonings, herbs, or lemon slice.

REAL HEARTFELT Being grateful is to some just a catch phrase … a fad easily tossed around as a way to guide us on how to live better lives. But it’s not a fad, it’s real.

warm,fuzzy feeling of overwhelming appreciation,happiness, and thankfulness that occurs when something wonderful has happened. It is the reason behind the joy and the uncontrollable smile that occurs when I am the recipient of some type of gift, tangible or not. Sometimes this feeling comes easily, and other times, not so much.

When my day begins by parting the curtains to feel the warmth on my face from the brilliant yellow and orange of the morning peeking through the branches, and over the top of the wall of pine trees, feeling grateful comes easily.

Whereas, when I am on I-77 and am abruptly cut off by someone, narrowly avoiding an accident, being grateful is a bit more challenging. That is, until I change my perspective and become grateful that no one was injured.

Yet, one of the things in my life that I do not have to work at being grateful for is my freedom, for it is one of the cornerstones of my living with gratitude and embracing a constant state of appreciation for daily life … regardless of outcome.

For me, freedom has always been synonymous with the word American. I have a sense of security just because I was born in a certain place and at a certain time. I have the right to live wherever I want without worrying about any feuding people or communities. I have the right to come and go as I please and

say what I think needs to be said. I can determine how I want to live and express myself accordingly …

I have the right to make choices.

Every time I stand for our national anthem and the raspy words of “land of the free” pass my lips, tears often run down my cheeks … not ones of sadness, but ones of pride and, yes, of gratitude.

Gratitude to those who fought to give us our inalienable rights.

Gratitude to those who entered into service to protect our country at home and abroad—willing to give everything so others have choices, and yet they expect nothing in return. Gratitude to those I may never know, for a debt we can never repay. If that isn’t real, I don’t know what is. w
