SOME MONTHS WHEN I SIT DOWN TO WRITE THIS LETTER to you, I struggle to get started. I can’t help but wonder if I have anything to say that you really want to hear about. Or, I assume that, like my sons when I’m giving them sage advice, you simply tune me out as soon as my prattle begins. After all, these pages are lled with the stories of fabulous women who are the movers and shakers of Lake Norman. How could I possibly add to that? en I’ll hear from one of you that somehow my babble has made a positive impact. Not only does that put a gi-normous smile on my face, it inspires me. Even still, there are times when the right words remain di cult to come by. My words to you are important to me, because you’re important to me—for what is a writer without her readers?
But by far, this is the hardest letter to write yet, as it’s also my last. As of July 18th, Lake Norman Woman Magazine is a part of Real Talk Publications, and Justin Ckezepis is now the publisher. Mamie Lee is the Editor-in-Chief, and she will be assuming my role.
I want you to know, though, that even though I have felt like the grandma in this industry for a while, my love for this magazine and the stories we share has remained the same. I’ve had the best job in the world. Every day, I’ve been able to meet and chat with the women of Lake Norman—from high-level executives to stay-at-home moms to every career in between. Information overload is real, but when every day the people you meet leave you in awe, that overload feels fantastic. ank you, women of Lake Norman, for giving me that. It has been an honor and a privilege to learn and share your stories.
And speaking of honor and privilege, it has certainly been both to work with Chelsea, Leslie, Stephanie, and Michele. ey are so much more than team members—they are treasured friends. We’ve shared countless laughs and unforgettable moments as well as some impressive accomplishments and a few spectacular bloopers. But through it all, we’ve always had each other’s backs. eir kindness, encouragement, and friendship have been a source of strength for me, and I am grateful for each of them.
It’s hard to say goodbye. I love this magazine—it is a part of me and I am a part of it, and if I’m being honest, I’m not quite sure what my life looks like without it. Although, I’m hoping it looks a lot like long walks with my dogs, pickle ball to the point of exhaustion, and lots of dipping my toes into the beautiful waters of the Caribbean, all with my love by my side. Dream retirement or not, it’s still di cult. But as one of my favorite philosophers, Winnie-thePooh, so wisely remarked, “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

HER DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP:
Michee
FOR MICHELLE PECK, serving others and being a leader aren’t mutually exclusive: they are two sides of the same coin. “I consider myself a servant leader,” she says. “I believe we are here to make the world a better place by leaving a positive impact on everyone around us.”
Leadership is the shadow you leave for others to foow. It is the ability to empathize with others—setting an example that will inspire them to be their best.”
Owner and broker-in-charge at Opulence Group Real Estate, Michelle credits her family with instilling a deep appreciation for hard work and leading by example. “My mother was the hardest working person I ever met,” she smiles. “She had ve kids and ran ve full-service restaurants. She left the house for work at 4:00 a.m. and did not get home until 7:00 that evening. She juggled all of it beautifully and was still the person I could trust with my secrets and the person I always reached out to for advice. She taught me about service to others and having a great work ethic.”
A strong leader, Michelle is that unique individual who can see things from others’ perspectives and help people discover their strengths. She sees her primary role as a realtor as focusing on serving her clients and agents. “Helping people nd their dream homes and settle into new environments is a tremendous responsibility that I take very seriously.”

Watching her team thrive is about as rewarding as it gets for Michelle, and the gratitude for her work family does not go unnoticed: “I believe that by demonstrating commitment and integrity, I can inspire others to do the same. How to PREPARE FOR A
HOME Renovation
LOCAL DESIGNER AND BUSINESSOWNER, ANNA STOWE, BREAKS IT ALL DOWN

PLAN THE START AND TIMELINE
EMBARKING ON A HOME RENOVATION PROJECT
can be an exciting yet daunting endeavor. At Great Design 4 U, we understand the signifi cance of thorough preparation in ensuring a successful outcome that aligns with your vision and needs. Here are fi ve essential tips to consider before diving into your renovation journey:
1
DO YOUR HOMEWORK: INTERVIEW LOCAL DESIGNERS, ARCHITECTS, AND/OR CONTRACTORS
One of the crucial first steps in any renovation project is finding the right professionals to bring your vision to life. Take the time to interview and evaluate designers, architects, or contractors. Look for experience, expertise in similar projects, and a collaborative approach. Building a strong team from the start sets the foundation for a smooth and successful renovation process.
2
THINK ABOUT THE FUNCTION AND STYLE YOU WANT
Before the hammer swings, consider the functionality and style you envision for your renovated space. Are you looking to create an open-plan layout, maximize natural light, or enhance energy efficiency? Understanding your goals and preferences will guide decisions throughout the design and construction phases, ensuring the final result meets your expectations.
3
ESTABLISH A REALISTIC BUDGET
Budgeting is a critical aspect of any renovation project. Define your budget early on and be realistic about what you can afford. Factor in costs for materials, labor, permits, and unforeseen expenses. Discuss budget considerations with your design and construction team to prioritize spending and avoid unexpected financial strains during the renovation process.
Timing is everything in home renovations. Plan the start date and establish a realistic timeline for completion. Consider factors such as seasonal weather conditions, availability of materials, and any personal or family events that could impact the project schedule. A well-planned timeline helps manage expectations and allows for adjustments as needed to ensure timely completion.
5
PREPARE FOR DISRUPTION
Renovations can disrupt daily routines and living spaces. Prepare for the inevitable disruption by discussing logistics with your renovation team. Set up temporary living arrangements if necessary, protect belongings from dust and debris, and communicate any concerns or special considerations with your contractors. A proactive approach to managing disruption can minimize stress and ensure a smoother renovation experience. Since your kitchen might be unavailable at the moment, why not take this opportunity to explore a new local restaurant?
Preparation is key to the success of any home renovation project. By taking the time to interview professionals, defi ne your goals, establish a budget, plan the timeline, and prepare for disruption, you set the stage for a transformative and rewarding renovation journey. At Great Design 4 U, we are committed to guiding you through every step of the process, from initial concept to fi nal execution, ensuring your vision becomes a reality. W

RESEARCH LOCAL ARTISTS
Check out the amazing talent right here in Lake Norman! By attending local art fairs and markets, visiting galleries, or by searching social media, you can find a unique piece and support your community as well.
FOCUS ON STATEMENT PIECES
Invest in one or two statement pieces that instantly catch the eye and define the style of the room. This could be a bold piece of artwork from a local artist, a unique light fixture, or a striking piece of furniture. Statement pieces not only add visual interest but also set the tone for the entire space, making it memorable and inviting.

PLAY WITH COLOR
BREAKING THE BANK
Color has the power to transform a room dramatically. Consider painting an accent wall in a bold hue or adding vibrant accessories such as throw pillows, rugs, or curtains. Even small pops of color can breathe new life into a space, creating a dynamic and energetic atmosphere without the need for a complete overhaul.
REARRANGE FURNITURE
UPGRADE LIGHTING FIXTURES
Updating light fixtures can make a significant difference in how a room looks and feels. Choose stylish and energy-efficient options that complement your décor style. Whether it’s a modern chandelier in the dining area or sleek pendant lights in the kitchen, thoughtful lighting upgrades can enhance the overall ambiance of your home.
Sometimes, the simplest changes can have the biggest impact. Experiment with rearranging your furniture to create better flow and maximize space. Consider creating cozy conversation areas or opening up pathways to enhance the functionality and visual appeal of each room.
EMBRACE TEXTURES AND PATTERNS
Introducing textures and patterns through textiles, such as drapery, throws, and rugs, can add depth and interest to your interiors. Mix and match different textures like velvet, linen, and wool to create a layered and inviting space. Similarly, incorporating subtle patterns through wallpapers or upholstery can elevate the design without overwhelming the senses.
ANNA STOWE | GREAT DESIGN 4 U
DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE
Clutter can detract from the beauty of your home’s interior. Take the time to declutter and organize each room, focusing on creating clean and streamlined surfaces. Invest in stylish storage solutions that not only keep clutter at bay but also enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of your space.
INCORPORATE GREENERY
Bringing nature indoors with houseplants is an effective way to add freshness and vitality to your interior. Choose plants that thrive in indoor environments and complement your décor. From small succulents to tall palms, greenery adds a touch of tranquility and natural beauty to any room. We often work with local nurseries to find the perfect plant for the client and their space. GETTING AT THE HEART OF
A Special Edition Q&A ORAL SURGERY—
What is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon?
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty of dentistry that is recognized by the American Dental Association. To become an oral surgeon, one must rst complete dental school. After graduation, the dentist must then complete an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. is residency lasts four to seven years, depending on the program, and is the longest residency of any of the dental specialties.
What do oral surgeons do?
Oral surgeons are devoted to performing surgery on the head and neck area of a person. Much of this surgery is in the oral cavity. Oral surgeons specialize in the extraction of third molars (wisdom teeth) as well as infected and non- xable teeth, and even healthy teeth that require removal for orthodontics and braces. But oral surgery is not just limited to the removal of teeth. Oral surgeons are heavily involved in the management of trauma to the face. ey perform simple procedures such as xing a small fracture of the jaw, to complete reconstruction of complex facial injuries. Additionally, these physicians manage simple to complex dental infections. Much of this management involves removal of the infection source as well as cleaning the deep areas of the head and neck to remove the extensions of the infection. Oral surgeons remove both benign and malignant lesions of the head and neck area and can provide moderate and deep sedation in their o ce as well as general anesthesia in some cases.
Are all oral surgeons board certified?
What is sedation dentistry?
Any dentist in any specialty may attend short courses after graduation to receive a certi cate to perform some level of sedation in their o ce. Oral surgeons spend four to ve intense months as an anesthesia resident in a hospital setting and generally carry the more complex certi cations of deep sedation and general anesthesia. ey must also be certi ed in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and their o ces must have crash carts that contain the same life-saving drugs and equipment that are used in emergency rooms and trauma bays.
No. After completing residency, oral surgeons are encouraged to become board certi ed; and this is a two-year process that involves passing a written quali cation exam, followed by a rigorous oral examination. Not all oral surgeons complete this process. Board certi cation is important because, without it, many hospitals will not allow an oral surgeon to operate in their facility. Having surgical and admitting privileges to a hospital gives an oral surgeon access to other medical professionals and equipment that are not available in the private o ce setting. Board certi cation is also required to be a member of OMSNIC, the largest insurer of oral surgeons.
Dental implants seem to be prevalent in dentistry today. Are oral surgeons considered implantologists?
No, the terms implantology and implantologist can be very deceiving and are marketing terms that anyone can use. e American Dental Association does not recognize implantology as a specialty; subsequently there is no such person as an implantologist. Preparing the mouth and the bone for dental implants and the placement of the implant itself is a large part of our training and specialty. Many oral surgeons have advanced imaging equipment that they utilize for implant planning and precise surgical placement. W

Women’s Health
FOR MORE THAN 70 YEARS, Iredell Health System has remained a community-based, nonpro t healthcare organization, growing from a 100-bed hospital atop a hill to a sprawling system with services in multiple counties.
Iredell Memorial Hospital opened its doors on May 1, 1954, as “a gift of the people, to the people.” Over seven decades, the hospital has only been under the leadership of ve hospital administrators — W.P. Walthers, Virginia Ashburn, S. Arnold Nunnery, Ed Rush, and current President and CEO, John Green. Under their leadership, healthcare at Iredell Health System has evolved and changed to meet the needs of the people. is includes women’s health.
In 1992, Iredell Health System noticed a lack of resources for breast cancer education and screening opportunities. With this, the Women’s Breast Health Center at Crossroads Shopping Center was opened providing walkin mammography and education at below market cost.
“When we initially opened, we did breast exams and breast cancer education. If a patient wanted to get their mammogram done, they could do that there too,” said Patty Campbell, radiologic technologist. Campbell has worked in women’s health at Iredell since the center opened.
e Women’s Breast Health Center shortly outgrew their space and moved to its present location on Hartness Road in Statesville. With the addition of new services like bone density testing and breast biopsy, the name was shortened to the Women’s Health Center. As the patient
base grew, the center began requiring appointments for services rather than walk-in visits.
Since its opening in 1992, the center has performed nearly 240,000 mammograms. In addition to the Women’s Health Center, patients can access 3D mammography services at Family Care Center of Taylorsville and Iredell Mooresville. Many of Iredell’s primary care providers also administer well-woman exams.
Mammograms are a woman’s best chance at detecting breast cancer early, when it’s often easier to treat. In fact, when breast cancer is detected before it spreads, the average 5-year survival rate is 99%. Women ages 40 to 54 should get mammograms every year, and those who are 55 and older should be screened at least every two years.
As for well-woman exams, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends establishing care as early as 13-15 years old. is allows the opportunity to develop a relationship with your primary care provider as

Author Edward Gorey penned, “My favorite journey is looking out the window.” For Jennifer Cesmat, Window and Door Specialist at Window & Door Pros of Charlotte (WDP), this phrase rings true on many levels as her window on the world is quite varied and diverse. “I have been in the window and door industry since 1998,” Jennifer shares, “and speci cally in Charlotte since 2002. It’s a huge responsibility to consult with designers, builders, and owners to create the perfect project with the desired results. It’s my passion and honor to help guide, educate, and direct everyone involved towards the decisions that will be a permanent component of their home or business.”
Jennifer grew up on Long Island, New York and attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York. She moved to Southern California in her early 20s where she met her husband, Matt.
eir children were born in California, but they relocated to Lake Norman when they were starting kindergarten and second grade. Now grown, Nick (28) is an engineer in Charlotte, and Andrew (27) is a doctor in residency in Cleveland, Ohio.
“I got into the building industry as a stroke of luck in 2000,” she says. “As a new mother, I was seeking a career in sales and took a position as an architectural representative for a major high-end window manufacturer. Soon thereafter, I became a territory manager for them.”
Good mentors, eld immersion, many window factory tours over the years, and hundreds of projects under her belt have translated into a comprehensive and in-depth fenestration background. Her keen eye for all aspects of design as well as her ability to work well with a diverse group of people and talents, has propelled Jennifer to success.
”It’s my passion and honor to help guide, educate, and direct everyone involved towards the decisions that will be a permanent component of their home or business.”
“I love the diversity of my position,” she says. “ e before and after transformations and the relationships formed with my clients and other professionals make this a perfect career for me. PERFECTLY IMPERFECT OUR
SELVES
BEVERLY LUTZ DOESN’T SEE THE WORLD through rose-colored glasses but rather as a shimmery vision of what you can accomplish, one healing step at a time. A clinical social worker/therapist and owner of Lutz Counseling & Wellness, PLLC, in Cornelius, Beverly reveals that her challenging childhood led her, ultimately, to a place of peace ... but it didn’t happen overnight.
“I grew up in a home where I experienced poverty, witnessed violence, and saw other traumatic events that deeply impacted me as a child. I felt a lot of shame and embarrassment as a result.” A university class in abnormal psychology fortuitously changed the trajectory of her studies—and her life.
“It was validating for me and empowering,” she says. “I knew that I was not the only person to have had these experiences. I became obsessed with wanting to study psychology, substance abuse, and mental health issues.”
Beverly credits therapy with helping her through bouts of depression and anxiety, and it ignited a passion to work with children and adolescents who were struggling with their mental health. Additionally, for the past decade she has studied the neurobiology of trauma, and she’s now a certi ed EMDR therapist (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). “My practice is dedicated to helping individuals heal from trauma from a neuroscience and somatic approach,” she explains. “ e ‘brain-body connection’ is strong because we now understand that the impact
of trauma lives in the brain and in the body. It is so gratifying to help people understand that they don’t have to continue to live with emotional pain or shame.”
Beverly, who is married and has two adult sons (Kendall, 24, and omas, 22), credits part of her success to understanding the importance of self-care — especially because some days, she reveals, you can’t do it all. “Not only do I want to be healthy, but I also want to model good self-care for my clients. It’s hard to stay ‘in balance’ in today’s hectic world. On some days, you have to give more energy and time to work, and on other days you give more energy and time to self-care or to your family. at’s life and it is OK!”
Wanting her clients, friends, family, and all who will listen to know and completely understand and believe that there is absolutely nothing that they cannot overcome, Beverly knows rsthand that with the right support and attitude, a successful, healthy, happy life is achievable ... and it is a bright and beautiful path bursting with the twists and turns that lead us all to our perfectly imperfect selves. MENTAL ILLNESS DOESN’T discriminate. It can strike anyone at any age, and its impact extends beyond the individual. For families, a child’s diagnosis can feel like a tidal wave, washing away normalcy and leaving behind a sea of uncertainty and fear. Parents grapple with a whirlwind of emotions – shock, grief, frustration, anger – as they navigate a new reality. is article explores the far-reaching e ects of mental illness on families and highlights the extraordinary parenting skills that must come to the forefront during these di cult times.
A diagnosis of mental illness in a child can be a shock and is often followed by a desperate search for answers. What is this condition? What caused it? What are the treatment options? Additionally, the family dynamic undergoes a signi cant shift. Communication can become strained, with parents struggling to nd the words to express their concerns and children grappling with anxieties and emotional turmoil.
While traditional medicine can play a vital role in managing mental illness, a holistic approach can signi cantly enhance a child’s recovery journey and strengthen the family unit. is approach goes beyond medication and therapy, focusing on mind, body, and spirit interconnectedness. Consider the following:
Parenting Through Mental Iness
• The brain is a complex organ significantly impacted by diet and lifestyle. Exploring the link between gut health and mental health and incorporating brain-boosting foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and B vitamins can be crucial. Establishing stable and consistent meal times, with a focus on protein, is important.
• Natural therapies like mindfulness meditation, yoga, and spending time in nature can be powerful tools for managing stress, improving mood, and promoting overall well-being.
• Healthy sleep hygiene is essential for both young people and parents. Establishing consistent sleep routines, creating a relaxing bedtime environment, and limiting screen time before bed can significantly improve sleep quality—impacting mood, cognitive function, and overall health.
• No one should navigate mental illness alone. Connecting with support groups, seeking individual therapy for parents and children, and creating a network of understanding family and friends can provide invaluable emotional support and a sense of community.
E ective communication built on the foundation of validation, compassion, and problem-solving, coupled with a holistic approach that prioritizes brain health and natural support strategies, can dramatically strengthen a family facing mental illness. is holistic approach empowers families to take control of their well-being and build resilience on the path to healing. Consider joining support groups, seeking therapy for parents and children individually, and researching reliable information about the speci c mental illness. While the journey is undoubtedly demanding, with the right tools, support, and a holistic approach, families can navigate mental illness and create a space for healing and growth. W

on BUILDING FAITH & FAMILY: My favorite scripture is, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Because I tend to be a planner, I like to think I can control what comes next. This reminds me that I don’t control anything, so it always humbles me. My husband Ryan and I have one son, Seth, who is 15, and I am very proud of my family ... as well as my work family! At Collins Family Dentistry, we truly embody the saying, “family comes first.” If my son has a ballgame or there’s anything else family-related, we always find a way to make it work.
on FULL-CIRCLE MOMENTS: I grew up in Georgia, and we moved to Lake Norman when I was 13. Later in life, I was working in a factory, and I knew it wasn’t the long-term career I wanted. My fiancé (who’s now my husband) asked me what I wanted to do. I wasn’t really sure, so we would toss around ideas. One day he mentioned dental assistant, and I thought, “Yes! I could do that.” The next day I came home, and he’d put an application for dental assisting school on the table. I continued to work full-time and went to school at night. I did my internship here, when it was Jones and Collins Dentistry, then worked in oral surgery for my first dental job. Three years later I was back where I started— Collins Family Dentistry. With a lot of full-circle moments, it has proven to be the perfect career path for me.
on LOVING YOUR “9 TO 5”: I adore my job! I enjoy hearing the girls’ laughter in the hallway while I’m sitting in my office; sometimes I just smile to myself when I hear them. I tell them all the time they make my job so easy. I also love the fact that our patients are so comfortable with us ... they come in and know that they can have fun or cry or just sit and pray together. They’re not afraid to ask for what they may need from us beyond just dental care – it’s heartwarming to know that we have created a place of business that feels like home. W

BONES HOME
OF THE
I HAVE HAD THE opportunity to go through some of the great palaces of Germany, Russia, and Sweden. I always take time on these trips to study the furnishings and artwork. However, on this trip many of those items had been removed in some of these beautiful estates. So what was it that made these room beautiful?
It's the architecture! In any great design the framework and architecture of the rooms are the key to establishing a luxurious feel. Classic crown mouldings, heavy baseboards, beautiful co ered ceilings, window casements and door casements can all add depth and interest to your room. If you have a strictly modern style the lack of these items sets the clean feel. However, with the external architecture of most of the homes in our area the interior architecture would be best served with some enhanced details.

the FOUNDATION
So often we move into our homes and want pretty furnishings, but without a strong architectural foundation, these furnishings tend to look staged or a bit naked. As a designer, I am often asked how to achieve that "designer" look. It comes down to solid, well planned architecture, lighting and flooring. These can then be enhanced with well planned furnishings, artwork, window treatments, and rugs. By adding the solid structure first you not only add value to your home, but you allow your home to be a part of the overall feel and not just the shell.
the TRANSITIONS
The one thing that is most often missed is a well planned transition between materials or consideration of how materials connect from one to another. This is often found with flooring. You may choose to have different flooring finishes between rooms, but if there is not consideration put into how these two come together then it just comes across as disjointed and poorly finished.
I saw this recently in a commercial renovation where a new flooring material was being installed next to a well worn flooring material. The solution they chose was to just place a piece of metal between the two rather than taking the time and finding a way to meld them seamlessly. Bottom line is that if it doesn't match it doesn't match. But if the spaces are coming together they should have a common element to bind the design.
the CEILINGS
So often forgotten, the ceiling is considered the fifth wall in design. It is not necessary that everyone immediately go out and paint their ceilings something other than white; sometimes white works. However, consideration of the ceiling is as important as consideration to the floor. It is as large and makes as big of a statement.
So now I ask you, what would your home look like with all of the furniture removed?

MIND body spirit
By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nurture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.
FAMILY! WE ALL HAVE ONE ... the unit that has shaped the canvas of our life experiences, how we see ourselves, the world, and our place in it. Those who had a supportive, nurturing childhood experience will often have a more positive view on life itself. For those with a more difficult upbringing, it seems that our place in the world is sometimes on shaky ground. Over the past five years as a biofield tuning practitioner, I have worked with hundreds of clients, ranging in age from 6 to upper 70’s, men and women, with varying backgrounds, and all have one thing in common – family interactions that have shaped their experiences for better or worse. Family dynamics inevitably have profound effects on an individual’s energetic field (or biofield, the magnetic field that surrounds the body) as well as their emotional health.
TUNING INTO family
Even in utero, a fetus absorbs the mother’s emotions and environmental energies, which lays the foundation for dissonance in their biofield. I often find heavy energy in the edges or the first few inches of the client’s biofield, which is usually reported by the client as a strained relationship between their parents. These early imprints show that individuals accumulate emotional and energetic patterns from the family environment long before birth.
of life. Adults from critical or unsupportive families may struggle with self-esteem and self-expression, while those from nurturing families display healthier emotional patterns and a balanced biofield. Biofield tuning reveals these deep-rooted energetic imprints, tracing them back to specific family interactions and experiences. Through this process, clients gain insight into how their family dynamics and other life experiences have shaped their current energetic and emotional state.
As children grow, family interactions continue to shape their energy bodies. For example, feelings of abandonment can manifest as lifelong patterns of insecurity and fear, affecting adult relationships and self-worth. Similarly, being told to be seen but not heard can lead to a blocked throat chakra, hindering effective communication and self-expression.
Family dynamics don’t just influence childhood; they extend into every stage
Biofield tuning offers a pathway to healing. By using tuning forks to detect and correct distortions in the biofield, clients can release stagnant energy and restore balance. This process not only addresses the symptoms but also targets the root causes embedded in family history. During a session, I use tuning forks to clear heavy energy, helping clients release long-held emotional burdens and move towards emotional freedom. As these energetic blockages are released, clients often experience profound shifts in their emotional health, leading to improved relationships, more balance, and reduced stress. W
