The last couple of months have been the toughest i’ve experienced, losing my Best Friend Sharon has taken such a toll on me and has had me question every aspect of my life.

AN INTRO FROM THE CHIEF

2025 is just around the corner and I’m definitely planning some big personal changes, life really is too short and you just don’t know what is around the corner.

In the here and now I am very much in limbo, in terms of my fostering journey and house journey, the wee man has been with me just over 8 months and could be away in a matter of weeks which I know is going to be so tough and I am waiting to find out a date that I can move into my new house - have been short term renting overlooking Lough Neagh, it is absolutely stunning here, foresee this quiet life in the future but it’s just too quiet for now.

Am stressed organising the GNI MAG Awards on 23rd November though am super looking forward to it, it’s always such a great night, if you haven’t done so already pop over to gnimag.com/ awards to nominate , you have less than 7 days, then the voting for winners will open on the same page.

Have signed up for a few projects next year that I know will be a great distraction and so much fun, apart from this I don’t have much to share, I will for-sure reveal all in due course

Let’s move on to Issue 64, can’t believe we are at the penultimate edition and next week I will be working on our Christmas Issuewhere has the year gone?

This issue is a real mixed bag, I interviewed independent songstress Grace Davies, you will remember her from XFactor - It felt like I was chatting to a friend when I interviewed her, so lovely and what a talent, check out her latest single ‘A Wonderful Boring, Normal Life’, it’s soo good.

I interviewed local lad Jordan Walker, he has been living, working and studying in London though is back in Northern Ireland for the next couple of months, taking to the skies playing the title role of Peter Pan in The Grand Opera House - we had a lovely chat about how his life has went full circle and he gave loads of lovely words of wisdom.

Other interview include Paul Ryder, Kataluna, Logan Hardcore and the beautiful bear gracing our cover Johnny Donavon

Is there a Doctor in the house? Yes, Dr Bryan Murphy is on board to talk about Acne, the health and wellness continues with Paul from Soul Script as he talks about Identity, Megane explores Labels, are they needed in 2024 ? And Ellise’s column touches on Body, Mind, Fitness and so much more

We really have something for everyone, The Rainbow Project covers Gender Affirming Care, we have Weddings, Sport, Travel, Food, Music, Events, Candles tested by us, Staycation in Newcastle the list could go on and on though I wont lol.

Thanks as always to our columnists who take the time to share what they have been up to, to the many forward-thinking companies who advertise their services and of course to you the readers who without I wouldnt have a publication to produce.

Enjoy reading, have a lovely Halloween, see you at the Awards in person or back here for our Christmas issue of the Magazine

Grace Davies is a singer-songwriter who gained prominence as the runner-up on The X Factor UK in 2017. Known for her original songs, including “Roots,” she captivated audiences with her powerful vocals, original material and emotional depth. Since the show, Grace has continued to release music and tour independently. We chatted about all this and more.

Interview with Daniel May

I THOUGHT WE COULD GET THE XFACTOR CHAT TICKED OFF FIRST, SO IT’S 7 YEARS SINCE YOU DID THE SHOW. I DIDN’T REALISE UNTIL RECENTLY THAT YOU WERE ASKED TO AUDITION - HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?

I’m from a very small town which does not have a lot going on. And there is no music industry there. I thought that a TV programme would be the only way to get a break, I saw that there was a Syco Talent Scout day in Lancaster, I had no idea what that was going to entail. But I turned up and did a mini audition, it went great and I was asked to come to the Syco London offices with my mum and my dad. The plan was to do Britain’s Got Talent. And I went through that process and then they said, We’re not gonna televise your audition because we’d rather you go on X Factor. I said, No, the BGT process took it out of me. For three years they asked me to do the programme, in the end I said All right, only if I could sing my own songs.

THAT ACTUALLY LEADS INTO MY SECOND QUESTION. YOUR TIME ON THE SHOW WAS BOTH GROUNDBREAKING BEING THE FIRST TO SHARE YOUR OWN MUSIC THOUGH THERE WERE ALSO MOMENTS OF DRAMA WITH MRS O - WHEN YOU LOOK BACK IS IT POSITIVE OR HAVE YOU ANY REGRETS?

I would not be sitting here talking to you and releasing these songs and stuff, if it wasn’t for that show and that process. So I can never sit here and slate it, whether I had a great or bad experience, but I did genuinely enjoy the show when I was on it though it was hard after to keep going forward for sure. But I don’t think there’s many times in life where you get to perform your own songs to millions of people sitting at home and have someone make a backing track for something that you’ve written and go here’s all your dancers and here’s all your pyro and everything like that it was spectacular and so yeah. I had a fantastic experience with the actual production of the show and that kind of side of it for sure.

I HEARD RUMORS THAT IT’S DUE TO COME BACK IN 2025. DO YOU THINK THERE’S STILL A PLACE FOR THE PROGRAM?

I don’t think there’s a place for it anymore. I think

that was quite apparent, even in my season. And it went on for a couple years after me, but we’ve had that time of that kind of show and I think it’s had its moment and you can see it in The Voice and things like that that are obviously still going on. It just doesn’t have the same kind of following or viewing numbers that it did back in the day and that’s fine, the world moves on but yeah, I wouldn’t recommend it.

LETS GET ON TO YOURSELF. YOU’RE KNOWN FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE SONGWRITING, WHAT’S YOUR TYPICAL PROCESS WHEN YOU SIT DOWN TO WRITE MUSIC?

I write from my personal experience. I think I always find it easier because it’s right in the diary. I’m very much like a collaborative person, the songs that I wrote for the show and things like roots, I wrote by myself and I can do that but I love being in the room with people who are just firing things at you and you’re doing the same and you get excited in the room and I think when you’re writing by yourself, you’re way more critical. So I love to just sit in a room and go. Okay. What’s everyone feeling today? Are we sad? Or are we happy or do we want to dance?

I love to get a vibe from other people and just have fun with it. And I think I spent far too many years tearing my hair out, critiquing every single word I wrote.

Now if it doesn’t work on the day or if anyone’s not in the right mindset, it doesn’t matter we’re not saving lives. We’re just writing songs. And so it’s just to have fun really, and see whatever comes into your brain.

IS IT MUSIC FIRST OR LYRICS FIRST OR DOES IT JUST DEPEND?

I always like to get a vibe of a track and kind of feel that the melodies are at least there and exciting but when it comes to lyrics, I’m very particular. And I don’t work well with people that kind of throw away lyrics that don’t make sense. I’m like no it needs to make sense we need to have a story

HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR SOUND AND STYLE HAS EVOLVED SINCE YOU FIRST APPEARED ON OUR SCREENS?

I’m a 27 year old woman, I was not when people first discovered me, I was writing songs about experiences

that happened to me in school and college. I’ve been through relationships and mental health problems, struggles with my body, things that I’d never experienced at 19 or 20. So I think my lyricism has changed. I’m much more straightforward and to the point and just tell it like it is, when I was younger I was also into and inspired by different people. Who I am as an artist has definitely changed for sure.

I FIND YOUR LYRICS VERY PERSONAL. DO YOU DRAW A LINE AND SAY I DON’T WANT TO GIVE THIS PART OF ME OR EXPERIENCE/ EMOTION AWAY OR ARE YOU SIMPLY COMPELLED TO SHARE?

I put everything in I honestly do because I don’t write diaries. I don’t journal or anything like that, and I’m no good in therapy. So, I just put everything that I’m going through. It’s kind of like my way of getting my feelings off my chest and I’ve spoken to someone about that thing that upset me and I’ve just put it in a song, but it makes me feel better.

But then I also think the feeling of a listener, hearing my lyrics and feeling less alone, in whatever they’re going through is super exciting to me because I sometimes write these songs thinking, I’m the only person in the world that feels like this and then someone else hears it and they’re like, no, I completely relate. So it’s that kind of bounce back of feelings being shared. It’s always nice.

WHO ARE YOU LISTENING TO ATM, WOMEN LIKE CHAPPELE ROAN AND SABRINA CARPENTER ARE KILLING IT?

Chapel Roan and Sabrina are amazing. I think it is women’s time but then you’ve got to think we have been campaigning for this for so long. There’s been so many movements and speeches at the Brit Awards about women in music and there is that title of women in music. You don’t get that often with men in music. It’s like we’ve been pushing forward for the spotlight to be on women in music and now it’s happening. It’s great.

I READ THAT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO YOU WERE THROWING THE TOWEL IN, WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT CHANGED?

So I’m an independent artist which is a completely

different ball game. You are funding everything yourself, that goes from paying producers, mixes, masters, PR companies, social media, photographers , music videos etc etc. You can spend so much money. So it’s that mentality of all right I’m gonna have to sacrifice everything that my friends are doing at 27 years old, buying houses, getting married, whatever, because I’m gonna put this career first and so that kind of takes a mental toll. It can take 10 years to become an overnight success. But I’ve been in this for almost 10 years now and you sort of go when is that day gonna come?

And so I was kind of over it and I thought, right I’ll be a songwriter or be a manager or work for a label or something. Then I wrote “A Wonderful Boring Normal Life “ in a session. I was like this is the best thing I’ve ever written in my life at the worst time in my life and I just thought I’ll make an album.

It’s the best thing that ever happened to me. I’m not saying that the day won’t come where I’m eventually, like no, I’ve had my time now, I’ve done whatever, but particularly now. I’m so glad that I wrote that song.

I THINK IT’S AMAZING. I LISTENED TO IT LAST WEEK WHENEVER WE WERE SETTING UP THIS INTERVIEW. I LISTENED TO IT AGAIN YESTERDAY AND LISTENED FOUR TIMES IN A ROW THIS MORNING AND I WATCHED THE VIDEO AS WELL. IT’S GREAT. I LOVE IT. I JUST THINK IT’S SO RELATABLE, IT TAKES YOU ON SUCH A JOURNEY, A VOCAL JOURNEY AS WELL AS KIND OF A PERSONAL JOURNEY. FOR ANYONE THAT HASN’T HEARD “A WONDERFUL BORING NORMAL LIFE “ YET. GIVE US A LITTLE RUNDOWN ABOUT WHAT THE SONG MEANS...

So, I think for me, I was kind of romanticizing the boring parts of a relationship. When you think about a relationship, you’ve got the honeymoon period, then you move in together, then you get engaged, then you get married, then you have children and it’s all these big events. When realistically 95% of your relationship is boring everyday stuff like watching telly, cooking dinner, little arguments about who left your shoes at the bottom of the bed and I’ve just tripped over them and it’s pissing me off like all of that kind of stuff.

Is actually very, very lovely. And I think to share that kind of life with someone is a really nice thing to think about. And so it’s kind of the romanticizing, the mundane parts of a relationship and longing for that, I guess.

I HAVE TO MENTION “ROOTS”, IT WENT OFF ON ANOTHER LEAGUE. I CHECKED ON YOUTUBE, IT HAD 1.1 MILLION VIEWS. THAT’S JUST ONE PLATFORM BUT ALSO IT’S GETTING PICKED UP AND USED ON DIFFERENT PROGRAMS, WHEN YOU HEAR IT, IS IT A PINCH ME MOMENT?

When it came out the reception was great. I was so happy that it finally happened, but obviously it was four years after the show so there were people that were waiting which was amazing but yeah I mean I’ve had experiences where I’ve literally been sat on the sofa with my mum and dad watching I’m a celeb final and then there is roots is playing in the

background. You just sort of look at each other and think that’s weird, isn’t it?

It’s crazy to see that song be used in such special moments. People send me videos all the time of their first dance at their wedding where roots is playing and yeah it seems to be the gift that keeps on giving.

I AM SUCH A SHANIA TWAIN FAN, YOU GOT TO OPEN FOR HER IN JULY, THAT WAS BOUND TO HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE, DID YOU GET TO MEET HER?

That was the first festival I’ve ever done. And so I was s** myself, I’m not gonna lie but it was so much fun to see your name on a lineup like that. It’s like an actual Mini Grace’s dream. I didn’t get to meet, she’s a busy lady.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE PRESSURE OR EXPECTATIONS, WHETHER FROM FANS, THE INDUSTRY, OR YOURSELF?

Do you know what, not very well. I think it’s because my manager would say this every day and no one has bigger expectations for me than me. I am my worst critic. I always expect the worst so that when a good thing happens, it’s a nice surprise. But I think, It’s just the way that I am. I don’t know if that really answers the question.

NO NO IT DOES LOL. SO LET’S TALK ABOUT PLANS, IS THERE AN ALBUM OR EP COMING OUT. WHAT HAVE WE GOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO?

There is an album and I’m soft launching it in a way because I’m not really doing a big announcement but I’ve been saying it for a year to my fans it’s been my dream to always make an album and if I don’t do it now I never will. Plans are in place for 2025, that’s all I know at the moment.

YOU’VE GOT A GIG COMING UP IN NOVEMBER IN NOTTING HILL, IS THAT THE ONLY THING YOU’VE GOT PLANNED OR CAN WE SEE YOU LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE BEFORE CHRISTMAS?

So that’s the only one so far. Maybe we’ll do a little Christmas show, I’m not sure yet. We’ll definitely do a mini tour or something next year, album launch things for sure, all to be revealed

MY FINAL QUESTION. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO ASPIRING MUSICIANS?

It sounds really cliche, never ever give up. I think you’ve just gotta put it before everything and that’s what I’ve found. It’s such a hard industry and especially when you’ve got things like tiktok that make becoming an artist so accessible for everybody, which is an incredible thing. It also means you’re a tiny fish in a massive pond, so if you don’t give it absolutely everything and kind of put that first in your life and believe in what you do, no one else will .

TAYLOR

HELLO, HELLO, HELLO… WELL WHAT A FEW MONTHS IT HAS BEEN IN MY LITTLE WORLD. I’VE BEEN UP AND DOWN THE UK ON ANOTHER TOUR, LEFT THE SECURITY OF HAVING A FULL-TIME JOB TO FOCUS ON MY PASSIONS AND HAD THE ODD BREAK DOWN HERE AND THERE, OH AND I’VE ENTERED THE 40S CLUB! (HENCE THE BREAKDOWNS). FINALLY, YOU MIGHT HAVE NOTICED A LITTLE NAME CHANGE…. I’M NOW … TAILOR MAID COLBY.

Grab yourself a cup of tea, relax and hear all about it below!

Life Update

If you read my article regularly you will know that I have worked in the makeup industry for a long time, 20+ years, and I absolutely loved it. It has been my constant source of inspiration and creativity. I love how makeup can inspire confidence and provide the ability for someone to see themselves in a different light. That’s why I got into makeup in the first place. To help people feel better about themselves. I have worked full time for multiple brands as an artist, trainer and educator, helping to build education plan and strategies to support the development of other artists and employees, but I feel that now is the time for me to take a wee break from all that and focus on me. Since 2020 my drag career has become a major focus for me. Each year the gigs have been increasing and the time I dedicate to Tailor has followed suit. I couldn’t juggle full time work as well as all my gigs hosting, performing, entertaining and teaching. So I bit the bullet in June and left my full time job to really focus on the things that I love. It’s been scary, but the best thing for me.

In saying that, I haven’t left makeup behind, I have started falling in love with makeup application again, I’m taking clients, for one-to-one lessons, applications, and I still teach as part of Ciara Daly’s masters course on the Lisburn Road. The way I see it, you only get one life to do everything you want to do, and you can’t get time back once its gone, so why not just go for it.

SASHA COLBY UK TOUR

Talking about going for it… I have just arrived home from the best experience and the biggest highlight of my drag career to date. I had the honour of hosting Sasha Colby’s UK tour in late September and it was an absolute dream. We were up and down the UK performing our asses off for jam-packed venues, working with the best local talent, and just generally having a ball.

know Sasha was pregnant with twins lol.) Quick shout out to Paige Three, my fellow UK Colby sister. Love you loads xx

Being a Colby is such an honour, it feels great to be recognised but there is also a responsibility that comes with the name, to do myself and Sasha proud and that I will. Touring is always a lot of fun, but what you don’t see behind the scenes is all the hard work, organisation, stress and nerves, in making sure everything goes right each night. We have an incredible team at DFIU Events and I am so proud to be part of it. The hard work all pays off when you meet everyone during the meet and greets and then see the joy it brings people when they are watching the shows.

In a strange way, I know it’s not the same but it gives me the same feeling that I get when I do makeup. It’s a wee burst of endorphins seeing people enjoy something that you are doing whether it be makeup or performing.

My mum always says “if you find something that you love doing, you will never work a day in your life” and that’s definitely my experience right now.

Can’t wait to see what’s next…. Stay tuned. Signing off for the first time

I am like a sponge when I’m on tour, I learned so much from all the other performers, but I have to say, I learned the most from “your favourite drag queens, favourite drag queen” mother herself Sasha Colby. She is the sweetest. Supportive, kind, patient and real. We really grew close on the tour and I miss her already. We got on so well that I was invited into her drag family as her drag daughter. I am now officially a COLBY. Aghhhhh! The first in UK and Ireland (only by a few days…I didn’t

Love... with or without labels.

More and more celebrities and people in the spotlight are choosing to stay away from traditional labels –gay, straight, bisexual and all of the other letters. Some people choose not to define themselves as they find it restrictive, some choose to wait as they haven’t quite figured out the right word, the one that fits. Some love labels, and it brings them a sense of comfort and identity. The question is, do we still need labels in today’s society, or are they doing more harm than good?

An abundance of celebrities have chosen not to define themselves, and given us some insights as to why. Kristen Stewart is often referred to as bisexual, but she doesn’t agree. She has said that it took her a while to realise that she could just not use a label, but now she doesn’t. Harry Styles takes a similar approach and has described his views of sexuality as ‘something that’s fun’ but that he ‘hasn’t given it much more thought than that’. He also believes is it something personal, which at the end of the day, it is. Billy Eilish, while she has only publicly dated men, has openly spoken about her attraction to women. She takes the stance of who cares and has made the very valid point of ‘Why can’t we just exist?’ Ariana Grande also shares these sentiments, as she has said she is attracted to both men and women, but chooses not to label it, stating on Twitter that ‘I haven’t before and still don’t feel the need to now’.

As we can see many celebs just don’t feel the need to use a label, but others choose not to label themselves for a different reason – that they view sexuality as an ever changing, fluid spectrum. Kesha is one such celeb, previously identifying as bisexual before changing her mind with the statement ‘I’m not gay, I’m not straight, I don’t know what I am’. Joshua Bassett is also still figuring it out and said that he isn’t going to be ‘rushing to a conclusion’ – he added that ‘There are plenty of letters in the alphabet. Sometimes your letter changes, sometimes you try a different one, other times you realise you’re not what you thought you were, or maybe you always knew’, showing us the true fluidity of sexuality, and why he hasn’t officially labelled himself. Bebe Rexha said that she sees sexuality as fluid and

that she doesn’t like being put into a box – she is simply attracted to whoever inspires her – whether that is a boy or a girl. Lizzo refuses labels as she says she doesn’t ‘ascribe to just one thing’ before adding ‘That’s why the colours for LGBTQ+ are a rainbow’ –keeping things black and white doesn’t work for her. Labels do come with issues. As mentioned by a few of the celebrities above – labels can feel quite boxy, and a bit too definite. Many people think of both gender and sexuality as a spectrum. It isn’t defined in a rigid spot, and can change, grow or move in any direction as people grow. As we change, so to may our attraction, and who we were in the past, isn’t who we have to be in the future. It can also take some time to decide who we are, or what we are attracted to. We all know that some people can come out as one thing, before changing their minds and having to come out all over again as something else. This too can be problematic, as many people first come out as bisexual – creating problems in the bi community as it almost delegitimises their sexuality, and can lead to people thinking of bisexuality as a ‘stop-gap’, rather than an inherent sexual identity. Which brings us nicely onto our next point, labels can almost force people, or make them feel as if they have to ‘come out’. Why do we still feel the need to come out in the first place. Straight people don’t come out, they just tell their friends ‘Hey, I am dating someone new’ – why can’t we all do that, and remove the expectation of ceremoniously announcing who we find sexually attractive? Especially since another issue with labels is that some people can be afraid to take on a label or use one to define themselves – especially if that label is subject to change, or they are only recently questioning and discovering their sexuality. There are also hundreds of different labels with different meanings – it can be quite overwhelming to try and find something that fits with you and how you feel. However, the abundance of different labels is also one of the massive benefits of them. With the variety comes specificity - labels can help to create a clearer definition of sexuality and help those around us to understand us better. We know that turquoise and teal are different colours – but we could describe both as blue green. By having labels that are more

nuanced, it creates a deeper, better understanding of identity. A good example of this would be demisexual, cupiosexuals and fraysexual – they all fall under the broad term asexuality, but they are each different and have their own meaning. The different terms help to bring clarity to what matters for each person.

Using a label, choosing to define that aspect of yourself or your identity can be an insanely comforting thing. It can help to further your understanding of who you are, and who you want to be moving forward. Lots of people describe finding the right label as a euphoric experience, or a big sigh of relief. It helps people to develop their own sense of self, and makes them feel like the truest, most authentic version of themselves. In certain instances, finding the right label can help people feel less ‘broken’ – not like they ever were – but especially in terms of things like asexuality, where people didn’t get crushes like their friends, and didn’t understand why. Labels can help people not to feel so alone and it can actually help bring people and communities together – finding friends that experience the same things you do makes people feel seen and safe.

Labels can therefore help you to understand yourself better – that moment where you finally find a definition of what you have been feeling. For a lot of people, defining your sexuality first comes with questioning your sexuality. Labels can be a great tool for this – questioning itself can be used as a label, or heteroflexible for if you aren’t gay, but aren’t necessarily straight either. Those that are maybe feeling unsure could find a label that describes themselves or their feelings better than they could, or in a way they couldn’t necessarily even see before. Finally getting that moment where you find a word that makes you go ‘Oh! That’s what I have been feeling all along!’ Choosing to use a label can also help us to navigate our lives moving forward – from understanding our experiences to communicating our needs and boundaries. Finding the right label can be comforting and affirming and can make people feel a sense of validation surrounding their sexuality. Labels can be fluid, people can change labels whilst

in a relationship, a bisexual person is not less bisexual whilst dating a girl or a guy. Some people would consider themselves straight, until their partner comes out as transexual, and they stay together. This doesn’t mean they don’t see or respect their partners authentic self, it can simply mean they love the person in front of them more than they love a label or defining themselves. Ultimately, the person that you connect with, fall in love with and want to spend your life with, or even just a night with, is more important than a label.

Additionally, just because you are one label today, doesn’t mean you can’t have a different label tomorrow. Labels are merely putting a word to a feeling or way of being. If we use feelings, you can be happy today, and angry tomorrow. Or you can go through life always describing yourself as a happy person. None of this has to be fixed. You do not have to be sure to start, you don’t have to be sure of what your ‘label’ is ever. You just have to be sure that you want the person standing in front of you. The best part of us moving forward is that now you get to choose – choose your label, choose not to use one, choose to use a new one if you find a new one that’s a better fit. The only choice that matters is your own.

Jordan Walker

Christmas is fast approaching which means it is almost Panto season, we caught up with Jordan Walker, home grown talent who will be playing the title role ‘Peter Pan’ in the iconic Grand Opera House this festive season.

FIRST OFF, CAN YOU TELL OUR READERS THE BASICS, WHERE YOU GREW UP, DID YOU HAVE A TYPICAL CHILDHOOD?

I’m Jordan, an actor living in London who grew up in Northern Ireland, in Ballyclare. I would say my childhood wasn’t the most typical childhood as I was often at a ballet class or a singing lesson haha. I was never at football practice or anything like that haha!

I MET YOU IN THE LOCAL MUSICAL THEATRE SCENE A FEW YEARS BACK, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THEATRE?

My mum took me to see Billy Elliot in London when I was 8 or 9 and that changed everything! After that, I did as many local theatre productions as I could and met some amazing people along the way. I may be a little biased, but I believe the local talent we have here is insane! It’s incredible to watch my friends who I went to these AmDram clubs with so many years ago, follow their dreams and get to watch them smash it!

YOU WENT OFF TO STUDY IN LONDON, WHAT UNI DID YOU ATTEND, DID YOU ENJOY IT AND HAVE YOU GRADUATED YET?

I studied Musical Theatre at Guildford School of Acting for 3 years. It was my absolute dream drama school and when I think back to it, it seems like a complete fever dream that I actually got in and went! It was an incredible (and hard!) 3 years, even though the last year was during Covid.. So many special memories.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS FOR PREPARING FOR A ROLE? HOW DO YOU APPROACH LEARNING LINES, CHOREOGRAPHY, AND MUSIC?

Of course! It’s important for me to go into the first day of rehearsals already knowing all of the lines so I can focus on the one hundred other things happening in rehearsals. For line-learning, I like to voice memo myself reading all the other characters lines in the scene and leave gaps for my lines and listen back loads. Choreography - making sure to get good videos in rehearsals and going over it the night we

learn it. Learning the music in a Panto is always really fun and quite chill, because A) most of the times you already know the songs because pantos have bops haha and B) it’s just something you can listen to over and over whilst going to work etc.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MUSICAL THEATRE ROLE YOU’VE PLAYED SO FAR, AND WHY DOES IT STAND OUT TO YOU?

Ooo tricky! I’d actually have to say it’s a play I did back in 2023 in London called ‘Under The Black Rock’, which was set in Belfast. I got to play alongside the most incredible line up of Irish actors which enabled me to learn so much. I also got to play the brother of Evanna Lynch’s character (Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter) which was surreal.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR VOCAL HEALTH AND STAMINA DURING LONG PERFORMANCE RUNS?

A good night’s SLEEP!!! Loads and loads of water during the day, steaming my voice with a nebuliser before performances and at night before bed is also great! I love Vocal Zone as well!

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD ON STAGE, WHETHER IT WAS DURING A PERFORMANCE OR A MOMENT WITH THE AUDIENCE?

Learning/getting to fly over the London Palladium stage was the coolest thing ever.. as if I got to do that and call it my job!! Oh.. and getting to meet the legend… Elton John, after he watched our show.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL CHALLENGES OF AUDITIONING AND DEALING WITH REJECTION IN SUCH A COMPETITIVE FIELD?

Great question! There’s so many factors that go into getting a role in a show, besides talent. It’s cliche but I truly believe whatever is right for me at the time, will not pass me. This industry is tough, so even getting into the room for an audition is a big win. Rejection can be tough, however, I have found it most difficult when I get to the finals of audition processes or if I

get super close to a life changing role etc… They usually take a week or two to recover from haha!

IS THERE ONE ROLE YOU WOULD KILL TO PLAY ? I THINK YOU’D BE A GREAT JAMIE. Haha, I absolutely love that show! For me, I’m really interested in new/original work and being a part of something from the very beginning - that’s definitely when I have the most fun and it can be a great creative process. However… randomly a big dream of mine is to be in a horror film haha - I am horror obsessed!!

ON TO PETER PAN , FOR LOCAL PEOPLE WORKING IN THE GRAND OPERA HOUSE IS ALWAYS ON THEIR WISHLIST, IS THIS YOUR FIRST PROFESSIONAL JOB IN THE VENUE ? Ah!! It’s 100% a bucket list moment being ticked off the list. I’ve been fortunate to perform at the Grand Opera House professionally when I was a child (Hansel & Gretel Scottish Ballet, Evita UK tour, Joseph UK tour). However, getting to do it professionally for the first time after drama school and as an adult is THE most exciting thing ever.

WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU WERE CAST AS THE TITLE ROLE FOR THIS YEAR’S BELFAST PANTOMIME?

Haha! Funnily enough when my agent facetimed me I was wearing my Peter Pan West End Cast hoodie and he said “You might want to get another one of those!” I was super shocked as well. When I did Peter Pan at The London Palladium I was a cover for a few tracks (Tink and John), so now getting to play the title role in my hometown feels really full circle. Super grateful to the Crossroads and GOH team.

HAVE YOU STARTED REHEARSALS YET? We start in November.. Literally counting down the days and super excited to meet the cast and creative team. (Also can’t wait to be a regular again at the Boojum across the street.. I’ve missed that while living in London!!!)

PETER PAN IS AN ICONIC CHARACTER. WILL

WE SEE A VERSION THAT WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH OR IS THERE A PANTO TWIST TO YOUR PORTRAYAL ?

The audience will be familiar with the characters, but our version picks up the story a few years after the original timeline… Also, we have a female actor (Jolene O’hara) playing Captain Hook - which I’m obsessed with! That’s all I’ll give away!

PETER PAN IS KNOWN FOR HAVING THE ABILITY TO FLY. ARE YOU DOING ANY SPECIAL TRAINING ?

You can’t have Peter Pan without flying! I’ve had the opportunity to “fly” a few times before and it is just SO fun!! It’s also a very magical part of the story and, of course, the children love it. It adds to the spectacle which the Grand Opera House is famed for!

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME ALONG TO SEE PETER PAN OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON ?

The list is really endless, but for me the Grand Opera House provides the ultimate escapism for two hours.

It’s pure magic and has something for every audience member to enjoy in it. As cast members, we know how special the Opera House pantos are for families across Northern Ireland, so you best believe we will put on a show that you will not forget! I might be biased as well but I believe Peter Pan is one of the best pantos to see as it’s a story that enables a lot of visually exciting effects on stage. Also, if that wasn’t convincing enough.. 2 words.. May McFettridge!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING THESPIANS LOOKING TO BREAK INTO THE WORLD OF THEATRE?

I think a big thing would be to ask yourself if this is really what you want to do, is there anything else? And if not, go go go for it! Lessons can be expensive, but YouTube is a great platform for practicing. However what helped me the most was doing summer Amdram shows - it’s the best way to hone in on your talent and work with like minded local people. Shoutout to Belvoir Players! I did a few shows with them and loved every minute of it. When it gets

to that time, do your research on drama schools and find the one that is right for you/you think you’ll get the most out of as three years goes by so so quickly! Always remember what makes YOU different and never lose that.

THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO CHAT WITH ME JORDAN

P PAUL

aul Ryder is coming back to Host The Outing Festival Valentine’s Weekend 2025

Triple-threat performer Paul Ryder has been trailing the lights of stages at Maverick Belfast, The George Dublin to Vibe Cork for close to twelve years now. His character, The Ringmaster, launched the infamous Ringmasters Drag Race, which will be 14 years of age in 2024.

His career soared with becoming a regular contributor for radio and television broadcasting and becoming a much-loved member of the Ireland AM, Elaine and Virgin Media Television team. His broad spectrum of topical reporting has kept him on the airwaves for the last 4 years, covering the likes of television’s greatest moments such as Love Island, The Oscars, The Brits, and so much more, with a new exciting segment nearly every week.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO HOST THE OUTING FESTIVAL?

I was approached by Eddie McGuinness, who I’d known for many years, working events on the scene. He said Panti was stepping aside from the festival due to her work worldwide, and he asked me to do it, and honestly, I was bowled over. The Festival had such a great reputation, and I wanted to do the best job I could.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY GOALS OF THE OUTING FESTIVAL?

It definitely gives a sense of nationwide community. We see LGBTQ+ Pride festivities happen all summer long, and this feels like the whole country and beyond coming together to mingle, fall in love, party, make new friends, see old friends, and so much more.

HOW DOES THE FESTIVAL ENSURE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN ITS PROGRAMMING?

Nobody can say The Outing isn’t inclusive in its programming. The team, with the directions of DJ Ruth (The George, Vibe Cork), does so much to ensure anyone and everyone is catered for in their entertainment years. Queer Magicians, singers, drag performers, Eurovision legends, reality show icons and so much more. It really is the festival for everyone.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS YEAR’S LINEUP?

Now, that’s a big secret. We must keep our lips firmly tight until the full line-up is ready, but it’ll be so worth it. I promise you that. I do know

we have Ireland’s top Drag King, Phil T. Gorgeous to Regina George, Victoria Secret to Queer Singer Shobsy, plus Paul Middleton (UK, Germany), Stemin(Amsterdam), headlining opening night Friday 14th February.

HOW DO YOU SELECT THE PERFORMERS AND ARTISTS FOR THE FESTIVAL?

We are Queer Arts Collective, so we reach out to queer artists, performers and crafts persons to reach out to us on our social media channels as we love to hear from them.

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED IN HOSTING THE OUTING FESTIVAL?

I will say keeping all our Drag performers and artists in place as it is like 72 hours of non-stop performers and events going as there is so much going on, plus my co-host Eddie McGuinness has too much energy.

CAN YOU SHARE A PARTICULARLY MEMORABLE MOMENT OR SUCCESS STORY FROM PAST FESTIVALS?

I think Blind Date is always so memorable because, just like the TV show, we don’t know WHAT is going to come from the contestants’ mouths and to be honest, the whackier, the better. The audience love it. I love. Eddie loves it. It’s just so much fun and such a laugh.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF THE OUTING FESTIVAL?

The Outing, along with QueareClare and Limerick Pride, are looking at coming together to bid to host EuroPride 2028, and if we get it, this means 1st time Europride will come to the island of Ireland after Belfast and Dublin Pride bidding a few years ago.

WHAT DO YOU WANT ATTENDEES TO TAKE AWAY FROM THEIR EXPERIENCE AT THE OUTING FESTIVAL?

I really always want people to feel like they’ve spent a weekend visiting a group of mates down the country and are going home a little bit worse for wear from laughing, dancing, and so much more.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE A WELCOMING AND ENJOYABLE ATMOSPHERE FOR ALL FESTIVAL-GOERS?

The festival’s location at The Inn at Dromoland, set against the

picturesque backdrop of Dromoland Castle, offers a charming, intimate setting. The historic venue provides a sense of comfort and tradition, while the vibrant festival activities add a modern, inclusive twist. Staff and organizers go the extra mile to ensure everyone feels safe and welcomed from the moment they arrive.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE OUTING FESTIVAL?

Seeing people laugh and enjoy themselves. That, for me, is my key takeaway every single year.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Valentine’s Weekend 14th-16th February 2025

Trans communities in Northern Ireland are bearing the brunt of a political and social system which does not prioritise our needs. For over six years, the Knockbracken Gender Identity Clinic has been caught in stasis, having lost a significant number of staff and funding. For two years, between 2018 to 2020, the service offered first appointments to a grand total of zero new patients. Since then, it has been operating on a shoestring, with one part-time clinician working through a waiting list that has now almost reached 1000. A whole generation of trans people are growing up and coming out into a Northern Ireland that offers them little support or hope of accessing medical transition.

So how did we get here?

It’s no secret within trans communities that, even before the service reached a point of collapse, it was inarguably not meeting the needs of patients. Invasive questioning, endless assessment, enforced gender stereotypes, and often problematic and marginalising treatment by clinicians created an environment where trans people felt they had to fit into a box and conform to a cisgender clinicians ideal of what a trans person is, rather than being met where they are. Non-binary people within the service - at least, those who didn’t just lie about their identity in order to ensure a smoother process - were often treated with suspicion, and subjected to a higher level of questioning and assessment prior to treatment.

The problems also stemmed from the fact that all of this care was delivered within a clinic, a team and a model of care which was never intended to be a gender affirming healthcare service.

Brackenburn was never

specifically commissioned or funded as a Gender Identity Clinic: the service grew out of a pre-existing psycho-sexual clinic, operating under a psychiatric model of care which treated trans identity as though it were a mental illness. From the very start, it was unsustainable, but at the very least it was functional and enabled many trans people to access hormones, surgeries, and other care that would help them get on with their lives.

The background of the clinic and its model of care is the cause of many of the issues behind the collapse: the extensive waiting times; the lengthy assessments prior to actually receiving hormones or any other interventions; the treatment with suspicion rather than empathy, respect and person-centred care. In the most recent International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) the World Health Organisation recategorised gender affirming care, moving it from the realm of mental health into sexual and reproductive healthcare; a more appropriate framework within which to support trans and gender diverse communities seeking care. The UK and Ireland, unfortunately, are reluctant to make this change. All of this, and a significant amount of campaigning and lobbying, led up to the commissioning of a review into gender affirming care services here in Northern Ireland, which began in 2019 and has been running ever since. Following a successful pressure campaign stemming from the lack of trans representation on this Review, then-Minister Robin Swann approved a Service User Input Panel composed of trans people and family members to complement it, of which I became a co-chair. We began the process with hope and optimism that we could help make a difference for the lives of trans people in Northern Ireland.

This Review trundled along through the Covid pandemic, stopping and

What’s going on with Gender Affirming Care?

starting, with many tense and exhausting discussions between trans people and those leading the review. Many individuals, who joined with the best of intentions to give their all to the work, either resigned or dropped off. It was thankless work: I, like many of my fellow panel members, were sharing our views and expertise on the care that would best fit our community while we were unable to access that care ourselves, and while getting increasingly frustrated when our views were discarded or ignored.

Eventually, the Review produced a series of recommendations which were almost entirely unsupported by the service user panel, took account of very few of the issues we had raised and, frankly, wasn’t worth the paper it was written on. It made no recommendations to move in line with international best practice and depathologise our care - that is, move it out of a mental health framework and into sexual health, something supported by almost everyone on the service user panel. It barely considered young people’s care, and to our knowledge had consulted no young people in Knowing Our Identity, the under-18s service, in the process of developing those recommendations.

This document was never published, and the Review group ceased to meet for a long period following this. Nothing changed, the waiting list got longer, and trans people continued to be forced to seek care elsewhere to have any hope of making progress.

That brings us to this year, when the Review reconvened under new leadership, with many of the service user panel disengaged, and began work in earnest to deliver a new service. As someone who has invested my entire adult life into working to ensure trans

people have access to gender affirming care, I was sceptical given my previous experience with the Review, but hopeful that we could actually start to make meaningful progress for our communities. We entered into this new stage in good faith and with hope that it would make a change. Has it? Well, the proof will be in the pudding.

Some of that pudding came out of the oven underbaked and smelling of rotten eggs when the Health Minister announced his ban on puberty blockers, joining the rest of the UK in their moral crusade against basic care for trans adolescents. The Review Group was consulted on this change, but the final decision was down to the Health Minister and the First and Deputy First Ministers, with the announcement of the ban seeming to take many clinicians as much by surprise as it did the community. This issue will not fade away - indeed, it’s quite likely that the British Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, will push hard to make the emergency ban permanent.

Regardless of this setback, and recognising the impact it’s having on young people across Northern Ireland and the fear it has generated across our communities, the Rainbow Project and others across the LGBTQIA+ sector are determined to keep pushing and provide some positive movement and some hope for the future for trans communities.

I believe the next six months will yield some positive change for trans people in Northern Ireland. We won’t get everything we want, we won’t get a best practice service transformation, not immediately, but I am hopeful that the crisis that has defined our services for the past six or seven years will begin to be addressed.

If that does happen, and I hope it will, we cannot rest on our laurels: we must keep pushing, fighting for the best possible standard of trans healthcare, fighting for bodily autonomy and self-determination, fighting for the basic respect and integrity that should be afforded to everyone in their access to healthcare. We deserve, and should accept, nothing less.

Johnny Donovan began his adult career with Sean Cody, where as “Deacon”, his boy-next-door charm, strong on-screen presence and natural talent for engaging with the camera won over legions of horny fans. Now seeking to explore new horizons, Donovan has transitioned to KinkMen, where he is showcasing his versatility as a dom and sub and embracing more diverse and intense roles.

We spoke with Johnny Donovan on the set of The Electro Dom, his new film with Brody Fox.

WE MEET A NEW SIDE OF JOHNNY DONOVAN IN THE ELECTRO DOM. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON THE ROLE?

Johnny Donovan: KinkMen.com has always been of interest to me. A lot of my sexual firsts were on camera: my first threesome, my first orgy, my first times with FTM and MTF trans people… I guess I thought if I wanted to try something new like flogging, caning or electro play, then it might as well be on film. There is a sense of safety for me on a porn set.

YOU PLAY THE ELECTRO DOM. ARE YOU ALWAYS IN CONTROL?

I’m naturally more of a pleaser, so I enjoy dominating when I’m in tune with what my sub needs. When I’m feeling selfish and needy, I enjoy subbing more.

LET’S TAKE IT BACK A LITTLE. YOU GREW UP IN IDAHO. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

My childhood was idyllic. I grew up in a small migrant farming community in southern Idaho. I was one of three white kids in a school of mostly Mexicans. I grew up enjoying the simple life, playing every sport, but mostly soccer.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALIZE YOU WERE GAY?

When I was 11, my best friend introduced me to this hardcore hetero site and I was way more into the men than my friend was, so I started to put some things together. I realized some of the boys I was trying to get close to since elementary school were not necessarily boys I wanted to be friends with. Then middle school was so much different. Suddenly I was nervous around the cute boys I used to be cool with and I just got more and more confused.

DID YOU HAVE ANY EARLY EXPERIENCES?

One day in the locker room my friend and I were talking about sex as we were undressing. I admitted

I was a virgin and he told me he had lots of sex. I asked him if the girls were pleased with his size because I thought I was bigger. He challenged me to a comparison. He said he was a grower and not a shower, so I asked “What do you want to get it hard?” I was hoping he would take the bait but he just shrugged it off and made an excuse for us to hurry out of the locker room.

WHEN DID YOU COME OUT TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS?

I came out to some of my friends right when I figured it out myself. It took me two years to come out to my parents, though. Even then I didn’t come out so much as just inform them I was dating a boy. My mom was a little shocked. She told me not to tell my dad because she thought it would be better if she got his initial reaction. From what I hear he was a little upset by the news, but they both kept loving me. My siblings were even cooler about it. Some expected, and some were surprised: I try not to take offense to either reaction.

YOU WERE 27 WHEN YOU AND YOUR PARTNER, RICKY, BOTH LAUNCHED YOUR CAREERS WITH SEAN CODY.

Actually, I was 26, but I think I said I was 24 on the site. We had been together for two years at that point and had just started opening our relationship to threesomes. Deciding to get into porn was a little scary at first, but once we did it, it was great. It made us stop taking ourselves so seriously in a lot of ways. We both had three jobs before porn and we were stretching ourselves thin. Looking back, I feel more like a 26-year-old now than I did then. I felt like I was sprinting toward 50 with all the stress and worry about the future. I understand now that things I used to take so seriously don’t need to be.

WHAT DID YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS THINK OF YOUR DECISION TO LAUNCH AN ADULT FILM CAREER?

My lifelong friends from high school thought it was crazy but cool. They live very heteronormative lives, and as open-minded and inclusive as they are, they get uncomfortable talking about anything they don’t know. My family was always on the side of “Just be as safe as you can.” There has been no pushback, at least not to my face, and I feel supported emotionally.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING AN ADULT FILM STAR?

I like the people I work with. Sex work is becoming so normalized and taboos about sexuality are

being lifted, so everyone I work with has made a conscious choice to do this work. They do it because they love it and it is work that comes naturally to them. Imagine working in any other industry where everyone around you enjoys what they are doing and they are really good at it. It’s just a joy. I also like how we get to engage with our fans. Having my fan site outside of the studio stuff lets me connect with the people who are watching me in my films.

WILL WE SEE YOU IN ADDITIONAL KINK MEN FILMS?

You will be seeing me start to explore my role as a switch this year. I can’t go into details about specific scenes, but I hope to get tied up a number of times and flogged.

DO YOU ULTIMATELY WANT TO END UP ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAMERA, FILMING AND PRODUCING KINK FILMS?

I’ve played with the idea. My degree is in television broadcast, and I do love to write copy and edit footage… but I think the part I love about this business is in front of the camera. I don’t want to ruin that with too many auxiliary roles.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE FUTURE OF ADULT FILM?

The future has to be 3D, right? People are loving what VR has done to porn. I think the GoPro 360 camera and similar tools will continue to be used more in productions. Maybe we’ll eventually have adult theaters that are 4D experiences.

WHAT MAKES JOHNNY DONOVAN SMILE? Nothing makes me smile quite like the feeling of two round cheeks that fit into the palms of my hands while I’m seven inches deep.

WHAT MAKES YOU CRAZY?

This thing my fiancé does with his tongue in my ear. It drives me insane, in a good way.

WHAT IS YOUR PRIZED POSSESSION?

I don’t put a lot of stock in possessions, but I lost my Kindle once and I thought I was going to throw up.

IF YOU COULD CONVINCE ANY CELEB TO FILM A SCENE FOR KINK MEN, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

I would love to see Jason Mamoa in a KinkMen.com scene where he is a biker and he forces me to spit shine his bike and lick his and his biker friends’ boots. Then cut to a scene where they have me tied up

on the bar and they each take their turn on me.

IF ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET WERE AN OPTION, WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO LIVE?

I think I would be happiest in La Jolla, San Diego, California. I mean, if it was at all affordable.

WHAT’S LEFT TO DO ON YOUR LIFE’S BUCKET LIST?

Machu Picchu, Yosemite, snowboarding and surfing in New Zealand, getting married… so much to do!

FINAL MESSAGE TO FANS? The rest is love.

Jon Savage...

The Secret History of LGBTQ Resistance in Pop Culture: Jon Savage’s New Book Shines a Light on Hidden Heroes

Jon Savage’s name is synonymous with music journalism. His 1991 book ‘England’s Dreaming’ remains the definitive account of punk rock and its socio-political context. Now, Savage brings his sharp, insightful gaze to Belfast International Arts Festival, where he’ll discuss his latest book, ‘The Secret Public: How LGBTQ Resistance Shaped Popular Culture (1955–1979)’. This new work unearths the lesser-known history of how the LGBTQ community laid the groundwork for much of the modern pop culture we take for granted today.

We often credit straight artists, producers, and executives for creating the sounds, aesthetics, and attitudes that have shaped the last fifty years of pop culture. But in ‘The Secret Public’, Savage shines a light on how queer resistance to oppressive norms created fertile ground for artistic revolution. This isn’t just a story of stars like David Bowie, who embraced androgyny and fluidity, but of the countless unsung queer artists, fans, and activists who fuelled the movements that forever altered music, fashion, and media.

Savage’s latest work arrives at a time when LGBTQ history is finally being recognised as integral to the broader cultural landscape, and it comes with the depth and rigor we’ve come to expect from him. But it’s also deeply personal. Savage himself, as a gay man who came of age in the punk era, has lived through many of the societal shifts he documents. In ‘The Secret Public’, he doesn’t just recount history—he is part of it.

Queer Resistance as Cultural Catalyst

‘The Secret Public’ places queer resistance at the heart of cultural change. Savage shows how central queer individuals were to the movements that redefined music, fashion, and visual media, from glam rock to punk and disco.

The book begins in the 1950s, a decade often remembered for its buttoned-up conservatism. But Savage flips the script, revealing how LGBTQ people were already challenging this conformity. Post-war America and Britain were gripped by a moral panic over sex and decency, but beneath this veneer of

respectability, queer communities were forging their own spaces. From secret bars to underground clubs, LGBTQ people created refuges where they could express themselves freely, often through music and performance.

American performer Johnnie Ray, dubbed the “Prince of Wails,” is one of the figures Savage brings into the foreground. His emotional, uninhibited performances were unlike anything mainstream audiences had seen before. Ray projected a vulnerability that resonated deeply with marginalized groups, especially those stifled by rigid gender norms. Although the tabloids speculated about his sexuality, Ray’s persona as an outsider defined a new kind of cultural defiance. These outsiders, often unacknowledged, would soon become the innovators.

Savage also explores the underground music scenes in places like New York’s Greenwich Village and London’s Soho, where LGBTQ communities gathered to create new cultural forms, often out of necessity. In an era when homosexuality was criminalized, queer people learned to navigate society’s oppressive structures while developing their own artistic movements, using music and performance as forms of resistance.

The Birth of Glam Rock and Punk: Queerness Goes Mainstream (Almost)

As Savage moves into the 1960s and 70s, he charts the rise of iconic figures like David Bowie, Lou Reed, and the New York Dolls, whose androgynous looks and queer-coded personas began to infiltrate mainstream culture. But ‘The Secret Public’ makes it clear that these artists were standing on the shoulders of LGBTQ creatives who came before them.

David Bowie, for instance, drew heavily from the performance styles developed in gay clubs and drag shows. The theatricality and shock value that made glam rock so revolutionary were first honed in these underground spaces. Savage doesn’t shy away from the fact that mainstream music often borrowed from queer culture without fully acknowledging its roots. Yet, he celebrates how artists like Bowie and Reed provided rare forms of representation—however coded or ambiguous they were at the time.

The book’s title, ‘The Secret Public’, encapsulates this tension. LGBTQ people were everywhere, shaping culture from within, but they were often hidden from view, or their contributions were co-opted. Punk rock, often viewed as a hypermasculine genre, is recast in ‘The Secret Public’ as deeply influenced by queer culture. Punk’s DIY ethos allowed LGBTQ people to carve out spaces for themselves, even in a hostile cultural environment. Savage highlights figures like Jayne County and The Cockettes, showing how punk wasn’t just about guitars and anti-authoritarian lyrics—it was about rejecting societal norms, including norms around gender and sexuality.

Savage also points to the importance of fanzines and other DIY media created by queer punks, which provided an alternative to mainstream publications that often ignored or misrepresented LGBTQ issues. These fanzines weren’t just about music—they were about building community and resisting erasure.

Disco: A Queer Revolution on the Dance Floor

The book takes a different turn when it arrives at disco, which, as Savage argues, was one of the most overtly queer cultural movements of the 20th century. The genre was born in the underground gay clubs of New York, where Black and Latino LGBTQ communities used music to create a space where they could be free from the prejudice and violence of the outside world. Disco wasn’t just a sound—it was a form of liberation.

Savage delves into the rise of iconic venues like the Paradise Garage, where legendary DJ Larry Levan spun records that defined the disco era. These clubs became sanctuaries, places where queer people of colour could dance, socialize, and express their true selves without fear. Disco’s unapologetic celebration of diversity and sexuality made it a target for backlash, most notably with the infamous “Disco Demolition Night” of 1979. Savage argues that this was more than just a reaction to a musical genre—it was rooted in homophobia and racism. The mainstream’s rejection of disco was, in part, a rejection of the people who had created and sustained the culture.

Even after the so-called death of disco, its influence persisted, seeping into house, techno, and the broader spectrum of electronic music. Disco’s

legacy, much like the queer resistance that birthed it, lives on today, even if its origins are often overshadowed or forgotten.

The Secret Public’s Legacy

By the time The Secret Public’ reaches its conclusion, it’s clear that Savage has written more than just a history of music and pop culture.

Jon Savage’s latest work isn’t just a history lesson—it’s a call to remember, celebrate, and honour the trailblazers who dared to be different in a world that wanted them to stay invisible. For anyone who cares about music, culture, and the fight for equality, ‘The Secret Public’— and Savage’s festival appearance—is essential.

Jon Savage appears at Belfast International Arts Festival on Friday 8th November at 2 Royal Royal Avenue. Tickets are just £7 and available from belfastinternationalartsfestival.com.

Pop-Princess Power

We are very fortunate in this day and age to have so many sensational artists showing us what it means to be a girl boss, to inspire a generation of women, and to loudly and proudly claim your womanhood, regardless of haters and critics. We have Taylor Swift, selling out Wembley more times than any other artist by a landslide, and putting on a whopping three and a half-hour performance every single time. We have Beyonce – still thriving and giving us hits after hits. Adele – the most beautiful voice, the deepest of lyrics, and doing it all whilst being an incredible mother and an inspiration to us all.

The ways that woman can be inspiring is limitless –they can dominate in different ways. Using Taylor, a mastermind, a sensational businesswoman and the biggest heart donating thousands to homeless shelters in every single city she played. We have Beyonce, who looks just as good as she did 20 years ago and can seamlessly move through genres meaning that no matter your music taste, everyone can love her. Selena Gomez inspires anyone that has fought a battle with long-term illness as she openly shared her struggle with Lupus and how it has affected her confidence, but also has built an amazing and extremely successful makeup brand, regardless of her haters. Or not just A-list celebs, but Northern Irelands own Tik-Toker Shannon Mitchell, who has just won a Vava award and through sharing her struggles with weight and weight loss and has helped many women overcome their own struggles with body confidence. B the Label is another Northern Irish celebration of women, a sensational female run clothing brand that’s made it onto the bodies of some of our favourite love islanders.

No matter where we look, we find females that we can look up to, that can inspire us, help us understand our own struggles and that can only be described as dominating boss-ladies. Though there are a few rising stars that deserve a deeper look.

Chappell Roan is a sensational artist who is quickly rising into the mainstream. Her catchy songs with an almost story-telling aspect are the perfect blend of ethereal, electric and pop. While she may have seemed to pop up out of nowhere, she has actually been producing music for quite some time, signing a record label in Los Angeles at the young age of 17. However, while she has released a few singles, ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’ is actually her debut album, throwing us back to her original roots of Missouri, USA, with a little bit of the LA culture she picked up thrown in.

She has taken to some massive stages – such as Coachella and FemFest with tthemes of gender, empowerment for LGBTQIA+ and empowerment for female sexuality – but more than this, it has become abundantly clear that she is not using these issues to boost her own fame. When performing at the Gov Ball Music Festival in New York, she told fans that she had rejected an invitation to perform at the White House, based on the fact that she believes the leaders of the USA have failed the LGBTQIA+ community by not following through

with their promise to guarantee freedom of human rights across the community.

Roan is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and she has made it clear that she identifies as a lesbian, has no interest in dating men and is currently in a relationship with a woman. Her sexuality is easily picked up on throughout her discography through the exploration of themes that lesbians and sapphics can relate to, such as hiding sexuality, being with someone who is afraid to be ‘out’ and the societal pressure to conform to heteronormativity in songs such as ‘Casual’ and ‘Good Luck Babe’. Growing up in Missouri with Christian parents, Roan understands the struggle of many members of the community to be their authentic selves. Her 2022 single ‘Pink Pony Club’ highlights this through its story of a drag queen confronting her conservative mother and stepping into the spotlight in her drag persona.

Whilst, similarly to many popstars, she can be often seen in short skirt and tight tops, usually leather – she often times does not use sex to sell. In her VMA performance barely an inch of skin was shown as she wore a full knight costume. Her song writing has come under some scrutiny for its sexually explicit nature – as she often does not hide behind innuendos and metaphors and can be quite graphic in her descriptions. But is this not complete hypocrisy? Many male singers, or straight singers are allowed or actively encouraged to be very sexually expletive in their songwriting – so what exactly is the problem with Roan doing the same thing? Or is it only okay if it is heterosexual. Roan empowers females, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community by completely unapologetically showcasing same sex love and the struggles to come to terms with this.

Another serious girl crush that is crushing it is Sabrina Carpenter. She started off her career in a way we have all seen before – Disney Channel. She was featured on the show ‘Girl Meets World’, alongside some pretty big roles in various movies, before being signed to a Disney-owned record label. Shortly after getting signed, she released her debut single ‘Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying’ and has steadily grown her success from there. With a handful of albums and many chart topping hits she continued to grow in success and into herself as an artist – although not that much, she is only 5 feet to be exact.

She moved away from Disney in 2021 after signing to Island records, where we can see a shift in the content of her songs, dance moves, costumes, and pretty much everything else. Truly a tale as old as time when it comes to young Disney stars. However, Sabrina didn’t go off the rails nor did she get involved in unsavoury scandals (we know there was a bit of boy drama, but it wasn’t rehab so take the win). She did progress as an artist and get, let’s say, a bit more provocative. Okay, a lot more provocative.

Her first album with Island records titled ‘Emails I Can’t Send’ was the beginning of her more risqué side, and her rise to the top. Off the back of this album, she opened the sensational Era’s Tour for Taylor Swift, during which, she sang her hit singles ‘Feather’ and ‘Nonsense’. Now if you are caught-up on your Sabrina Carpenter lore, you will know she has different closing hook everytime she sings it, often referencing the city she is singing in and well, sex. A good example if you aren’t caught up is her outro when she performed in Sydney.

‘When you go down under do you miss me?/He’s so big I felt it in my kidney/Screamed so loud they heard me here in Sydney!’

Sabrina has never been afraid to claim her femineity or sexuality, which can be really empowering for a lot of females. We think that we have progressed, we have had several waves of feminism, but a lot of females still feel a bit taboo when talking about their own pleasure. Sure, more and more females are singing about sex – but really think about it. Cardi B’s ‘WAP’ for example only focused on the pleasure she could give a man, the only thing she received was material wealth – not sexual pleasure. Sabrina sings openly about what she likes to receive, and owns her sexuality in a bold, brave and like-it-or-lump it way.

Far off from her Disney channel days, she shows no signs of slowing down or becoming more suitable for work in her new album ‘Short and Sweet’. Her new album itself is arguably even more risqué than her previous one, with songs such as ‘Juno’ – but she does also throw in some super sweet and catchy bops – and honestly, who hasn’t heard and immediately loved ‘Please Please Please’ or ‘Espresso’? The Short and Sweet tour is well underway, with Sabrina being seen in outfits that mainly consist of a sparkly bodysuit, garters, and a transparent slip. She continually dances on the line of

soft and sweet, whilst being also being dangerously sexual. This hyper-femininity contrasts with the more gothic leather we see often see Roan dressed in – but does her hyper femininity just add fuel to her hyper sexualisation, or does it just show that being sexy, and owning your own pleasure is feminine in and of itself. Sabrina shows women that femininity and sexuality go hand in hand, and that female pleasure is a complete non-negotiable.

Another woman that is dominating music, and has done for quite some time, is a woman that needs no introduction, but we will give her one anyway - The Princess of Pop Miss Kylie Minogue. Unlike Carpenter and Roan, Miss Kylie is no rising star –she has been producing music for nearly 4 decades, and still continually and consistently releases bop after bop. She has been well recognised for her discography as over the years she has bagged herself Four Brit Awards, Two Grammy Awards and a whopping 18 ARIA Music Awards. Not only that, but she has been named by Time as one of the most influential people in world – and honestly, who wouldn’t agree with that statement!

Boasting seven number ones, eleven number twos, thirty-five top tens and a crazy fifty-two top forty hits in the UK she is the 12th best-selling singles artist and the 3rd best-selling female artist of all time! So, it would be rude to not take a whistlestop tour through her sensational career and reminisce about her past bangers (whilst adding the ones we may have forgotten to our playlists). After signing to Mushroom Records in 1987 she released her debut single ‘Locomotion’, where she swang her hips, and we all fell completely in love with her. Shortly after, we got ‘I should be so lucky’, topping the UK charts for a beautiful 5 weeks. She released banger after banger in the 80s, but her next UK number one didn’t come until the late 90s with ‘Spinning Around’, followed closely with ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ in the early 00s. And yet she keeps going – 2010 with ‘All the Lovers’, and most recently for us, the absolute smash-hit, we’ve talked about it before, of course it was the 2023 release of ‘Padam Padam’. From the 1980s to today she has released an incredible 16 studio albums – so it would be impossible to discuss every single one of her well-known and very well-loved songs, but you have gotten the gist by now.

It’s safe to say, Kylie dominates – she is one of the only artists to achieve a top ten in the Charts from the 1980s to the 2020s. And it must be said, have

you seen her? She has done it looking absolutely sensational. How she does it us mere mortals may never know. However, more than that, she has achieved these amazing feats whilst going through some terrible and turbulent times. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, for which she had to receive chemotherapy and undergo surgery. She bounced back quickly, and whilst she had to modify it a bit, she still went on her previously booked tour in November 2006. She has also created her own line of wine, an underwear brand, and dabbled in quite a few acting opportunities –notably her debut film ‘The Delinquents’, a cameo in ‘Moulin Rouge’ and featuring as a guest star in ‘The Vicar of Dibley’. The woman does not stop!

Now, some naysayers would complain ‘She is too old to be a pop-star’ because the rich old white men at the top think a woman only has value under the age of 25 – we are looking at you Leo. Kylie proves them wrong over and over again by smashing through the glass ceilings telling celebrities who they can be and when they have to stop. All we can do is hope and pray she keeps smashing those ceilings and bringing us smash hits. Kylie inspires women to do the same, to keep pushing higher in their careers, to keep pushing for their dreams even when society complains they are past their best before dates.

The women that dominate music and pop culture teach us that we are never too old, teach us what it means to be feminine and sexually empowering, teach us to stand up for what is right, regardless of the opportunities we may have to miss because of it. They show us how to be bold, how to be brave and how to have the time of our lives every time their voices grace our ears.

EMBRACING YOUR IDENTITY

IDENTITY: WE ALL HAVE ONE, AND FOR MANY OF US, IT’S A WILD, BEAUTIFUL MESS. IN THE QUEER COMMUNITY, IDENTITY ISN’T JUST A NAME TAG WE SLAP ON; IT’S A DAZZLING, EVER-EVOLVING ADVENTURE. IT’S LIKE THE ULTIMATE “CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE” BOOK, EXCEPT IT’S REAL LIFE, AND SOMETIMES SOCIETY HANDS US A MANUAL THAT’S MISSING A FEW PAGES.

But here’s the thing: when we embrace our true selves; unapologetically queer, fabulously diverse; it’s not just about surviving in a world that wants us to play by its rules. It’s about thriving, flipping the script, and writing our own. From childhood whispers that tell us to “fit in,” to proudly stepping into our own light, being queer means discovering the magic in defying expectations.

And within the queer community, our identities are as colourful as a pride flag on roller skates. We come in every shade and flavour, and that diversity? It’s our superpower. Whether you’re gay, trans, non-binary, or beyond, being queer is a celebration of everything that makes us beautifully, wonderfully different and that’s something the world needs more of.

Identity is at the heart of how we experience the world and for queer individuals, it carries an extra layer of complexity, resistance, and beauty. Queer identity, far from being a static label, is a vibrant, evolving journey. It’s about more than just naming who we are; it’s about embracing authenticity in a world that often insists we conform. As people grow and their circumstances change, so too does their identity.

Living as our true selves, in all our diversity, is an act of defiance and courage. From childhood, many queer people are taught explicitly or implicitly that their queerness is something to hide.

Breaking free from these expectations and stepping into authenticity, whether through coming out or simply being ourselves, is a transformative process. It’s not just about selfacceptance but about finding power in who we are, even in the face of rejection or misunderstanding.

Within the queer community, identity is both deeply personal and profoundly communal. We recognize that queerness is not monolithic; whether we are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, intersex, or somewhere else on the spectrum, our experiences are as varied as they are valid. This diversity is our strength.

world where everyone can be free to exist as they are— authentically, unapologetically, and without fear.

In embracing our queer identities, we not only find selfempowerment but also contribute to a larger, collective movement for justice, inclusion, and change. We are living proof that identity is not just a label; it’s a powerful force for transformation.

We come in every shade and flavour, and that diversity? It’s our superpower.

The process of coming out; whether it’s a single moment or an ongoing process symbolises the movement from repression to self-acceptance. It is an act of courage that requires the individual to embrace their authentic identity, even in the face of potential rejection.

Throughout my life, I’ve often felt different. I wasn’t particularly encouraged by my parents to succeed, nor was I ever explicitly told I wasn’t good enough. Instead, I was made to feel small, as if my feelings and expressions were invalid. Growing up in a violent household, my mother left when I was young, and I lived with my father and siblings

Although my father did the best he could, his tough, macho exterior left my younger self feeling fearful, causing me to remain unseen and invisible.

I also never had the chance to come out on my own terms. In professional environments, I’ve worked under homophobic managers, and I concealed my sexuality from colleagues, fearing it would hinder my career progression.

Please note, this column is the opinion of the columinst and not that of GNI or Romeo & Julian Publiccations Ltd.

But queer identity does more than shape our personal and community lives. It challenges society’s norms, pushing back against the rigid binaries of gender and sexuality, and offering a more inclusive, expansive view of human experience. The power of queer identity lies in its ability to resist oppression and create a vision of the

Now, I’m on a path toward self-acceptance and embracing my authentic self, recognizing that this is a gradual journey that demands patience, compassion, and self-kindness. I am in a deeply loving relationship with my partner, which outwardly may be seen as a cisgender male relationship. However, I am connecting with the deeper layers of my

being, where I sense an emerging harmony of both masculine and feminine energies.

While this process of letting go of old aspects of myself to embrace my true, authentic self can sometimes bring fear and confusion, I am committed to allowing this transformation to unfold without judgement.

Crowning Beauty...

Kataluna Enriquez is the Reigning Miss International Queen – USA

The Miss International Queen pageant celebrates the beauty and tenacity of transgender women with contestants showcasing their stories of transformation, resilience, and incredible talent

Kataluna Enriquez is the reigning Miss International Queen – USA. She made history in 2021 when she became the first openly transgender woman to win the Miss Nevada USA pageant, ultimately competing in Miss USA. She recently competed in the Miss International Queen pageant in Thailand, where she won the best talent category and placed in the Top Six of the overall competition.

In December, she will travel to Las Vegas to crown the next Miss International Queen – USA and she is hoping you will join her.

HOW HAS YOUR YEAR AS MISS INTERNATIONAL QUEEN – USA IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?

My year as Miss international Queen USA has offered me the opportunity to connect with people all over the country. It has allowed me to share my story and advocate for mental health. It’s also helped me to brush up on my English! English is my third language and the language barrier was a hurdle, especially in the beginning, but I’ve managed it pretty nicely.

HOW HAS YOUR PLATFORM HELPED TO ADVANCE VISIBILITY AND ADVOCACY FOR THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY?

Simply being a representation of hope and resilience advances the visibility of trans people. Like many trans people of color, I am a survivor of physical, sexual and mental abuse. Many of us are often ashamed of our traumatic experiences, but as Miss International Queen USA, I made it my purpose to be vocal and to share my experiences openly. It’s important to tackle trauma, shame and fear head on and my hope is that by standing my ground and finding success on my terms, it will encourage younger generations to know that anything is possible.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACED DURING YOUR REIGN?

There was a lot of pressure in being the first to represent the new USA franchise in the Miss International Queen pageant. Preparations for the international competition were extremely tough. I wanted to make sure that my wardrobe and packaging were more than exceptional. The two weeks I was in Thailand competing for the international crown, I didn’t get more than four hours of sleep each night. So many hours went into sewing, finishing gowns, wardrobes, and working on speeches. It was a lot and though I may have not won the crown, I did win everyone’s heart.

AS YOU PREPARE TO CROWN YOUR SUCCESSOR, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE NEXT MISS INTERNATIONAL QUEEN USA?

My advice to the next Miss International Queen USA is to know and love yourself. There will be plenty of naysayers, but what is more important is the love that you have for yourself. Self-love radiates like no other,

especially on stage. No one can surpass you when you are fearless and have a great understanding of who you are and your purpose.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR PAGEANTS LIKE MISS INTERNATIONAL QUEEN IN TERMS OF PROMOTING INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY?

Miss International Queen USA will continue the legacy of paving the way of what it means to be brave and to be free. In the future, I hope the organizers will consider eliminating the age limit and career history requirements.

WHAT IS YOUR NEXT GOAL?

My next goal is to one day compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race. I’d like to be the first Miss USA competitor to compete on the show and the first Filipino American to win it! Drag has been extremely influential to my win and reign. It has shaped me and my ability to express myself fearlessly. There are many stories I haven’t shared with the world yet. Stories from my childhood and from all of the pageants that I have competed in. There were so many things I had to hide to survive and I cannot wait for the world to hear all about it.

ON THE FINAL NIGHT, WHEN YOU PLACE THE CROWN ON YOUR SUCCESSOR’S HEAD, WHAT EMOTIONS DO YOU EXPECT TO FEEL, AND HOW WILL THIS MOMENT RESONATE IN THE HISTORY OF TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION?

The emotion I will feel the night of crowning my successor is simple: grateful.

MISS INTERNATIONAL QUEEN – USA WILL DAZZLE THE CITY OF LAS VEGAS FROM DECEMBER 8–12, 2024. TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE NOW AT BETHETRANSFORMATIONALCHANGE. ORG/MIQ-USA-TICKETS. FOLLOW ON FACEBOOK AT MISS INTERNATIONAL QUEEN USA AND ON INSTAGRAM @ MISSINTERNATIONALQUEENUSA.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS IN EVERY SEASON – FALL INTO BETTER HEALTH THIS AUTUMN WITH EFR COACHING.

AS WE ARE NOW IMMERSED IN EVERYTHING AUTUMN BRINGS, WITH COOLER TEMPERATURES AND SHORTER DAYS, IT’S IMPORTANT TO ADJUST OUR ROUTINES TO SUPPORT PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING. FOR THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY, HEALTH, FITNESS, AND NUTRITION ARE ESSENTIAL, NOT ONLY FOR PHYSICAL HEALTH BUT ALSO FOR MENTAL RESILIENCE AND IDENTITY-AFFIRMING CARE. THIS SEASON, LET’S EXPLORE HOW WE CAN STAY ON TOP OF OUR GAME, EMBRACING WELLNESS WITH A SENSE OF PRIDE AND SELF-CARE.

Physical Activity – Move to Stay Grounded

This time of year is actually perfect for not only making progress in the gym but surprisingly, outdoor activities too. Whether you’re into walking, running, cycling, hiking, the crisp air and vibrant autumn colours can energise your body and mind.

It can be hard to get motivated to get out for steps in the colder months, at EFR Coaching we now schedule free lgbtq+ group afternoon walks along with our fur baby’s and to grab a coffee every other weekend. This makes getting then colder steps seem like less of a task and something to really enjoy! Whether it’s rain or shine there’s always new and familiar friendly faces and all the puppy cuddles along the way. These Walks are Amazing for both physical and mental wellbeing.

Whether you’ve got a big floofer, a tiny pupper, or just a love for dogs and Autumn walks, come get involved! Meet other like-minded pet parents, get some exercise, and enjoy good vibes with your furry friend. This is a welcoming, safe space for the LGBTQ+ community (and our pups!) to connect, laugh, and make new friends. Everyone is welcome – with or without a dog!

If you’re someone who wants to keep active drop us a follow @ efr_coaching for these upcoming events.

Consider these activities along with getting out walking:

Hiking: gives an amazing sense of achievement. It helps to enjoy and connect with nature while working your body.

Strength Training: Helps with building muscle, getting strong, reduces the risk of chronic illness and osteoporosis. It enhances a sense of empowerment.

Yoga: A meditative way to embrace the season’s stillness while staying active.

Cycling: A fun way to get the heart rate up and take in the autumn season.

Nutrition- comfort and health for the season

Autumn is a time of comfort, and the food this season is nutrient-dense and comforting. Soups, stews, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and apples are packed with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that support your immune system.

Throwing vegtables and chicken into the slowcooker in the morning to save time whilst working or training and having a nutritious meals batched cooked by dinner time. With extra to freeze for another day. It’s a great way to hit our macros without hassle. Having this prepared will prevent the want to grab the Fast food or over indulge in high calorie snacks after a long day of work.

For LGBTQ+ individuals who face higher rates of stress and anxiety, incorporating foods rich in omega-3s (like walnuts and flaxseeds) and complex carbs (such as whole grains and root vegetables) can help balance mood and energy levels.

Here’s a few tips:

Warm Meals: Soups and stews made with seasonal vegetables can provide comfort and nourishment.

Batch Cooking: Make larger portions to save time and reduce stress. As mentioned above the slowcooker is the goat for this!

Mindful Eating: Listen to your body, honor cravings along with what our body needs, and avoid restrictive diets that can trigger unhealthy relationships with food.

Protein and volume eating: Base your meals around a good protein source then build the rest of your meal with volume foods such as good carbs and vegetables for energy and vitamins. Planning your meals this way will keep you satiated for longer.

Mental Wellness – Stay Mindful of Seasonal Changes

Please note, this column is the opinion of the columinst and not that of GNI or Romeo & Julian Publiccations Ltd.

Engaging in any physical activity that affirms your body can help improve body image and gender euphoria. For a lot of people wearing gender-affirming workout gear can boost confidence and allow for fuller movement while staying safe.

The transition to autumn can bring about a dip in mood for some, especially as daylight decreases. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is real and can disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ folks who already face mental health disparities. It’s essential to prioritize mental well-being this season, recognizing that our mental and physical health are intertwined.

If you’re struggling, consider...

The days are shorter so mood may be low with a lack of daylight exposure. Make the most out of getting a good bit of outdoor exposure during the day, a walk is a fantastic way. Vitamin D is a great supplement during the darker months. There is sufficient research to show that not having enough of the vitamin can lead to depression-like symptoms.

Small group personal training : At Efr coaching we build community. We strive to create an empowering, supportive and encouraging atmosphere within the training sessions with both coach and clients. Working along as a team to make progress. You’ll gain a fitness family. This benefits both your physical and mental health.

Therapy: Connect with LGBTQ+ affirming mental health professionals to support your unique journey.

Community Support: Seek out queer support groups, either in person or online, to stay connected. Loneliness and isolation can be more common as the weather cools, so reaching out is vital.

Building Healthy Habits for the Season

Autumn is an excellent time to reset habits before the rush of the holidays. With less social pressure and more routine, it’s the perfect time to build habits that stick:

Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule: With the sun setting earlier, aim for consistent sleep, which is key for mental clarity and physical recovery.

Hydrate Well: Cooler temps don’t mean you need less water. Staying hydrated boosts energy, helps digestion, and improves skin health.

Manage stress levels: Managing your stress load is crucial for maintaining overall health and fitness. Regular physical activity can significantly reduce stress and anxiety by releasing endorphins. A balanced diet rich in nutrients supports brain function and can improve resilience to stress.

Body Positivity and Affirmation in Fitness

For many in the LGBTQ+ community, body image struggles are common. Fitness should be about feeling good and embracing your body, regardless of shape or size. Reject any pressure to achieve a certain “look” this season. Instead, focus on what your body can do and how movement can make you feel stronger, more balanced, and at peace.

Remember, fitness is personal, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Queer bodies, in all their forms, are beautiful and deserving of health and fitness. Whether you’re new to fitness or a seasoned athlete, embrace a wellness routine that celebrates your unique self.

As we embrace the autumn and winter season,

prioritizing mental wellness, there’s no better time to invest in your health.

This autumn, let your health journey be a reflection of pride – in your body, your mind, and your identity. Take care of yourself in every way, and remember that true wellness is about honoring your whole self! Body and mind.

Let’s thrive this season!

Don’t forget to keep a look out for the date and location of our next lgbtq+ community dog walk on socials.

Album Release

I can’t wait for...

I have seen this artist live earlier this year in the summer when he was supporting P!nk for her Croke Park dates and he really did not disappoint as a live performer, sounding as good as he does in the studio which is a testament to talent and not overproduction in my opinion.

Rag’n’Bone Man - What Do You Believe in? - 18th Oct

A testament to his growth as an artist, building upon the success of his previous albums, this new release showcases his ability to blend soulful melodies with contemporary sounds, creating a truly unique listening experience. The album delves into themes of love, loss, and introspection, offering listeners a glimpse into Rag’n’Bone Man’s personal journey.

One of the standout features is the album’s production having collaborated with a talented team of writers and producers to create a sound that is both modern and timeless with the album’s blend of hip-hop, soul, and blues influences. The album’s opening track, “The Right Way,” sets the tone for the rest of the album with its infectious melody and uplifting message.

I love the honesty and openness of the album that Rag’n’Bone Man vocalises throughout the album. His sound, his vocals, and his lyrics have grown, putting him on a level with some of the big seasoned artists of his genre. That smooth-as-silkto-gravel vocal that we have all come to know and love of him has only gotten stronger and clearer since he burst onto the scene. Stand-out tracks for me are “The Right Way,” “Hope You Felt Loved in the End,” and “Chokehold,” with their keys and old-school sounds that you associate with the likes of Marvin Gaye or Otis Redding. If you’re a fan of Rag’n’Bone Man or simply appreciate soulful music, “What Do You Believe In?” is a must-listen, it’s an album that stayed with me long after the final track faded.

Vinyl of the Moment

The only way icons should be played!

Cher - Forever - 11th Oct

This is a brand new, expansive career-spanning compilation of the iconic artist Cher! It is the first collection on vinyl since 1992 and features a carefully curated and remastered tracklist of 21 songs that will please longtime Cher fans and new converts alike. Cher has always been a leader, not a follower when it comes to her image, sound, and style, and this vinyl brings you through every single one. I grew up listening to many powerful women in music, but Cher was always top-tier. She even holds the title of “the divorce song” in our house, thanks to her releasing the powerful “If I Could Turn Back Time” around the time my mum finally got her divorce.

ACNE TREATMENT

Dr Bryan is a local Consultant Dermatologist based in Belfast at Cathedral Dermatology Clinic where he sees patients with ‘all things skin’ including lumps and bumps, skin cancers, pigmentation, skin ageing and rashes such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. He is passionate about raising awareness of dermatology and skin health. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling and spending time with friends, family and his partner and their two cavapoochon dogs.

Acne affects us all at some point in life. For most, it lingers through our puberty years, but some adults amongst us still suffer ‘breakouts’ well into their 20s, 30s and even later. Watching others living with clear skin can be frustrating for acne sufferers, leading to reduced self-confidence, low mood and a search and yearn for a long-term solution.

Who gets acne?

I, myself, recall my teenage acne, trying to look my best for the teacher-supervised assembly hall discos, then out comes a spot to say hello… Sudocrem to the rescue?! For the vast majority of us, acne appears during puberty but settles over a couple of years as our hormones balance out. In around 1 in 20 adults over the age of 35, however, acne persists well beyond those teenage years. Furthermore, in my clinics I have had adults tell me that they never experienced spots during puberty, so their acne started later in life. In essence, acne can be unpredictable, but for most of us it burns out as we reach our twenties.

What is acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder caused by a chain reaction triggered by sex hormones; mainly ‘androgens’. Our skin responds in a seemingly excessive way to these hormones, even at normal levels in the blood, during puberty and its

associated hormonal changes, but also as part of conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome, those taking hormone supplements for gender transition or when using steroids (either as a medical treatment or for a body building supplement).

Androgens trigger the oil glands to enlarge and produce more sebum. Some notice this as their skin feeling greasier. The opening to the glands, or ‘pores’, can become clogged with excessive sebum and dead skin debris which then forms a medium for acne-bacteria to grow and trigger inflammation. As a result, we see blackheads, pimples, acne papules and sometimes cysts or painful nodules on our skin because of this process.

What can I do to prevent and treat acne?

First and foremost, do not panic. I completely empathise with my patients when they tell me how down, frustrated or desperate they are – I had

it myself and worked through most of what I am about to suggest below. It did clear eventually, so I want to start by emphasising that there are both medical and skin care options out there that help.

Skin-care

Any patient that attends me will recall my chat about the acne ladder. Let’s start at the bottom with skin care. So do you really understand what you are putting onto your skin?

Skin is a protective barrier to keep toxins out and water in; it helps to regulate our temperature; and harbours a diverse array of ‘good’ bugs and microorganisms that exist in harmony to maintain a ‘healthy skin environment’. If you use the wrong products, you can throw this harmony off.

I encourage everyone to speak to a dermatologist, their GP or an qualified skin therapist before trying any ‘in vogue’, social-media promoted acne products or spot-busting regimes. Non-regulated and too harsh a product might damage your skin’s barrier properties, thus welcoming in toxins and bacteria from the outside to trigger acne or other rashes like rosacea. Furthermore, excessive water loss can lead to eczema. It is important to cleanse twice per day, and perhaps consider a double cleanse in the evening. I suggest a gentle and pH-balanced cleanser. Soaps and some non-balanced cleansers can be too alkaline for our skin, so might induce a high pH which can throw off the optimal environment for healthy skin to flourish. The next time you are shopping for a face wash, have a look at the pH on the products. Oily cleansers, however helpful they might be for removing thicker make up, can fill pores and trigger acne. I suggest that patients avoid oil cleansers if they are acne-prone and use a micellar water first, then their preferred acnefriendly cleanser in the evening. One cleanse should suffice each morning.

Exfoliation can also help to unclog pores. Some find that physical exfoliators work best, this means with a scrub cloth or a beaded exfoliator scrub. Too rough a product or cloth, however, might harm the skin’s barrier. Furthermore, microplastic beads in certain products will rinse down the drain, enter the water system and risk harm to marine life. Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicylic acid, are found in cleansers, moisturisers and even skin peels.

They offer an alternative way to remove dead skin and, most importantly for acne, to cleanse your pores. So have a think about how you might add some BHA into your skin routine.

Moisturisers help to soothe damaged skin and act as a protective barrier. They can, however, contain lots of thick occlusive oils, paraffin and waxes that will clog your pores and further provoke acne lesions. If your skin is not dry, then it’s doing its own thing to self-moisturise so you don’t have to. If you do need a moisturiser, consider a product containing hyaluronic acid or niacinamide - these are humectant and attract water to hydrate the skin, without coating it in thicker oils.

Then finally to make-up; call it a friend as camouflage, but a foe in its ability to clog pores and trigger spots. It gives so many of my patients a boost knowing they can ‘hide behind their make-up mask’, but perhaps have a chat with your brand specialist about anti-acne/anti-comedogenic products, limit the layers you apply and prioritise use of powder products over liquids.

What else?

Your next step on the acne ladder is topical and then oral treatments. At these levels, patients will have to attend a medical doctor as most treatments require a prescription. Many options carry side-effects that need explained to you before you start, and perhaps some will not be suited to subgroups of patients, for example, during a pregnancy many acne medications are contraindicated.

Topical treatments, this means creams applied to the skin, can contain retinoids, antibiotics, bleaching chemicals like benzoyl peroxide, or acids such as azelaic or salicylic acid. Retinoids and benzoyl peroxide can irritate the skin so need building up slowly. Others might be used in combination products or alongside oral antibiotics to boost their effect and to limit antibiotic resistance. Many of my patients have already tried a low concentration benzoyl peroxide or a retinol product before attending the clinic. These can help in some milder cases, but be weary of using them without consulting a Dermatologist or your GP if you are under 18 when your delicate skin barrier is still maturing. Some products might cause damage or provoke acne flares in naïve skin.

Oral therapies include antibiotics, contraception,

isotretinoin and anti-androgen medication such as spironolactone. At a dermatology appointment, I would discuss and develop with you a treatment plan tailored to your unique health and situation. Isotretinoin, or Accutane as many refer to it, is the pinnacle of the ladder and can only be prescribed by a Dermatologist.

Skin peels are offered by some skin clinics and even at beauty salons. If the correct acids and concentrations are used, they can help some patients’ acne. Furthermore, once acne has cleared but scarring or pigmentation persists, peels can also be used. Not dissimilar to my point on using inappropriate active agents on younger skin, be weary of skin peels without proper specialist input so that you don’t excessively shed your skin barrier and paradoxically aggravate your skin.

Acne is a massive and fascinating area of dermatology. No one patient is the same when they sit down with me in clinic, but I love taking them on their own tailored journey up the acne treatment ladder. Seeing the ecstasy of clear skin on my patients’ faces when they complete their treatment or after helping them to finally find the correct products to maintain their skin, makes every minute spent with them worthwhile.

So I will leave you to ponder again, do you really know what you are putting onto your skin?

Cosy Candles for Autumn

We put seven of the top local and national candle brands to the test to discover the ultimate burn for your buck!

Get ready for an amazing scent experience! To make sure your candle fills the room with a strong, delightful fragrance and burns evenly without wasting any wax, follow these essential rules for the perfect burn.

• Trim the wick to ¼ inch or 5 mm before lighting to prevent the candle from burning too quickly and creating soot.

• When lighting a new candle, let it burn for at least 2.5–3 hours. You can also burn it for 1 hour for every inch of the container’s diameter.

• Keep candles away from vents, fans, and open windows to avoid quick burning and large flames caused by the wind and ensure it is on an even surface.

• Use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame instead of blowing it out to prevent the wick from drifting and the wax from splattering.

• Always supervise a burning candle and never leave it unattended.

Meadow Farm

Candles start at £15 www.meadowfarmlifestyle.co.uk

Inspired by Yorkshire made in Yorkshire is this company’s motto, every product is handmade on Rachels farm in the beautiful Yorkshire Valley. Nature and the outdoors are the main inspirations for her candle scent ranges. The business has evolved into a lifestyle brand and expanded into reed diffusers, bath salts and food products such as pure honey and luxury granola.

Garys thoughts: I got to try Rachels signature “Yorkshire Bramble” candle with notes of blackberries, mulberries, magnolia, oak and vetiver. Don’t be fooled by the stylish simplistic packaging, as soon as I lifted the lid off the candle, this amazing fruity autumnal scent greeted me. After lighting within a short space of time the scent filled the room and I could still catch hints of the fruity fragrance throughout my apartment the next day. It is honestly one of the best candles I’ve ever experienced, no wonder Scary Spice aka Melanie B, is a fan of this brand. I must also give a special mention to the Into the Woods reed diffuser that they included in the press pack, the scent projection and fragrance itself are equally impressive.

Leo & Lyn

A small family-run business established in October 2020 in Belfast with many of its fragrances designed taking inspiration from areas of natural beauty in Northern Ireland. Rooted in the traditions of Ireland and inspired by the vibrant spirit of Belfast, their candles are more than just wax and wick. They can often be found with a stand in Forestside shopping centre throughout the year where Joe will happily help you find your perfect scent.

Our thoughts: We were blown away by the range of scents, choosing a favourite among the 3 they let us sample was no easy task. We were treated to the fruit and spice-based “Pumpkin Spice,” the rich peat and vanilla tones of “Bushmills,” and the captivating woody floral notes of “Dark Hedges.” Not only do these candles smell divine, but their exquisite packaging and white glass design make them truly stand out among their competitors. The range of themed scents makes these candles the perfect gift for family, friends or tourists. While each candle offered a unique scent experience, the one that stole the spotlight for all 3 of us was “Pumpkin Spice” with its warm and spicy projection. Who wouldn’t want their home to exude the cosy, inviting scent of a pumpkin latte in autumn?

All about celebrating the queer experience and gay culture. It’s a queer-owned business with products entirely crafted by two queer friends and hand-poured in London. They use vegan, high-grade soy wax and focus on creating complex, sophisticated scents that celebrate queer joy and body euphoria.

Daniels thoughts: The “Morning Wood” candle packaging and glass give off a classy and seductive vibe. When you take off the lid and give it a sniff before lighting, you get this wonderful woody, salty, earthy scent. When lit, the scent subtly fragrances the room and isn’t too overpowering. I love the black glass paired with the white label detailing the scent. It’s also great to support an LGBT+ owned brand, and their candle names and descriptions are so clever. Definitely not something you’d give to your granny, but who buys their granny a scented candle called “Morning Wood,” right? Make sure to check out their newest scent “Cream Pie,” available from the website and their various stockists.

Keltic Candles

A luxury soy wax candle maker from Belfast, their clean-burning soy wax candles do not contain paraffin wax or harsh wicks, making them suitable for asthmatics and eco-aware individuals. They carefully select fragrances from the best sources worldwide to create their range of products. Established in 2008 their scents are inspired by nature, providing full sensory experiences. They create each candle with the utmost care, from wicking to pouring and labelling. They have a stall at St. Georges Market if you don’t want to buy nose blind off their website.

Our thoughts: The trio of candles we sampled were each so different a large glass jar with “Dark honey and Tobacco,” a stylish tin with “Black Pepper,” and “Irish Autumn” in a gift box. 3 very different fragrances but all autumn scents in their own right. The hands-down winner was the Black Pepper tinned candle which reminds us of a big fragrance brand with the initials MB, with a pretty decent scent projection once it had been lit for a while. We have to give a special mention to their “Rhubarb and Black Plum” wax melt bars perfect for your wax warmer if you aren’t keen on having flames.

They create handmade products that are kind to your skin and the environment, using 100% Post-Consumer Recycled materials for their bottles, FSCapproved sustainable cardboard for their boxes, and maintaining an ethical sourcing policy with their suppliers. Their brand culture is rooted in natural skincare, transparency, and sustainability. They are dedicated to creating

beautiful and sustainable products that you can enjoy in your home which are available from their website or selected Avoca stores.

Paulines Thoughts: I really loved the packaging for both candles that we were sent and the scent combinations are a perfect blend, “Coriander Seed, geranium and Vetiver,” and the cutest Christmas cracker mini candle “Cinnamon, Clove, nutmeg and pine.” Out of the two I was automatically drawn to the Christmas cracker and its festive fragrance, the pattern on the glass really does make it look so expensive. The scent projection with the Christmas Cracker was stronger than the Coriander candle and would be my favourite out of the two It is something I would definitely purchase for friends and family.

Prometheus Unbound

Candles cost £32

www.prometheus-unbound.co.uk

Their candles are inspired by the Greek mythology of Prometheus, the god of fire and wit. Hand-poured using a coconut and rapeseed natural wax blend, these bookish candles offer a clean burn and luxurious fragrances. The vegan-friendly and cruelty-free fragrance oils make the scents in their candles stronger and more luxurious.

Our thoughts: We tried three of their best-selling fragrances:

“Bookish” has rich notes of plum, pomegranate, and roses, with a base of amber, vanilla, and leather.

“Shakespeare” is a fresh, spicy fragrance with bergamot, ginger, florals, and a soft base of sandalwood and cashmeran.

“Shhh!” fills your home with coffee, cocoa, and a hint of rum.

We loved the little extra touches, like the scent information card doubling as a bookmark and the

tissue paper with literature quotes. Our favourite for a cosy night had to be “The Bookish” for its rich, luxurious scent and slow, even burn. The only thing that lowered its score was the time it took to fully project its scent, but don’t let that put you off, as it is worth the wait for the projection.

Nosey

Candles Cost £15

“Designed to burn, not to be saved for special occasions,” With 40 hours of burn time and premium ingredients, they are top-shelf quality. NOSY uses a unique wax blend made from rapeseed and a touch of wild beeswax, rather than soy, to minimise space usage and reduce the negative environmental impact of shipping. Their wild African beeswax is responsibly sourced from the East Africa Wax Co., supporting efforts to reduce poverty and climate impact. They are passionate about creating affordable candles for everyday use.

Our thoughts: We received 4 scents from Nosy: The Musky one - rich fragrance with earthy woods and smoky myrrh.

The Snoozy one - calming blend of lavender and sweet amber.

The Calm one - bold blend of green tea, rose, and geranium.

The Cheerful one - a floral blend with geranium, jasmine, rose, and wood notes.

We loved the unique paint tin-style packaging with colourful labelling. The scents blend well with beeswax and burn evenly and at an economical rate. Gary’s favourite was the Snoozy one, which he used during a long bath, and Daniel liked the Cheerful one, which he burnt while working on this very issue.

BIG DAY >>>

Tell us how you met, were you single for a long time before you started dating?

We met on a well known dating app, exchanged a growl and chatted for a few months on it before exchanging numbers and meeting up. John was single for 2 years and I was single for upwards of 6 months.

How long after you started dating did it take to pop the question, was it an immediate yes, and who asked who?

9 years we’d been dating for, John asked me in a secluded 100 year old cottage in Co. Fermanagh as part of a weekend getaway with some of our close friends. I had no idea he was going to propose. Absolutely it was an immediate yes.

Tell us about your BIG DAY , location,

amount of guests etc.

Big day was in the Ballymac Hotel in Stoneyford, with a beautiful Humanist ceremony, 103 guests. Day was stunning, from start to finish which was nearly 4am on Sunday morning. Solid worry and anxiety on the lead up was completely unwarranted and just melted away as the day and ceremony began.

What about the food and drink?

Peppered chicken and beef stroganoff was the order of the day followed by biscoff cheesecake and pavlova to finish. Drinks flowed, and the manager commented as we were leaving the next day that we, “the guests were big spenders” so that kept them happy.

Were there any hiccups or did all go to plan?

Our guitarist busted their hand a few days

prior to the wedding but a friend of his saved the day, not all heroes wear capes, definitely. But apart from that, it all went according to plan.

Have you been on or are you going on honeymoon?

Going to Sitges in Catalonia for a week very soon.

In your day to day lives what do you do for work, what interests do you share and have that are different ?

I work in finance and John works in Recruitment, both for separate law firms. We spend a lot of time together, we do a lot of things together, we are both besties too, definitely. We read, we cycle, and love to socialise with friends and family too. I am a bit of a geek, John calls himself a Playstaton Widow when a new game comes out.

Do you do everything together in terms of socialising, travel ?

Yes, pretty much. Part of our vows that we had written ourselves, separately, commented on the fact that we are both best friends for each other. We didn’t know we had written this as part of our vows to each other so it was really nice.

Have you a family, is this something on the plan for you?

Oh heck no, no family and none on the horizon. Maybe a four legged fur baby soon…….

Tell us who made your day possible in terms of rings, flowers, photographer, cars etc Joseph Rea for the rings, Epic Photography and of course the Ballymac Hotel. We didn’t do flowers or cars, they weren’t needed. Tom Morrow Menswear for our suits, their shop has absolutely everything and Bogart Menswear for the groom’s suits.

Has anything changed since you said “I Do”?

We both have agreed that the ceremony has definitely made us closer, we are both still on a high from it all and we will use this as a springboard to continue to love each other and to build our foundation for our future as best friends and also as husband and husband, best feeling in the world.

Anything we may have missed that you may want to add/mention?

Just enjoy the day, It fly’s by. Any LGBT+ couples that are thinking of tying the knot, to go for it, show the world our out and proud love.

F Galgorm Weddings...

rom Champagne Coupes and Pets in the Pictures to Best Women and Flower Boys…

Galgorm Collection’s Wedding Expert Beth Greenan shares her guide to what to expect in the world of weddings in 2025

As peak wedding season heads towards its close for 2024, wedding couples across the land are already making plans for their special days next year. Mood boards, wedding mags and a trawl of the biggest online stars’ social media accounts will be playing their part in creating some serious wedding inspiration.

But look no further, because here, Beth Greenan, Galgorm Collection’s resident wedding expert, who has been helping loved-up couples create their dream big days for 20 years, is on hand to share her insights into what the country’s coolest couples will be doing in 2025.

“What we’re seeing is that couples are more and more confident in making their own decisions,” she says. “They’re working within broader traditions but doing it their own way. Things are bigger, bolder and more creative than ever – and social media has played a huge part in that. Couples want a pictureperfect experience, and they’re making whatever adjustments they need to get it.”

Here’s what to expect in 2025.

Multi-day Events

“More and more couples are thinking of a full experience for their guests, rather than just the wedding day itself,” says Beth. “If guests are travelling, they want to spend quality time with them, not just grab a quick chat outside the church, so multi-day events are huge.

“There could be a rehearsal or welcome party the day before as the excitement builds and a brunch or more informal event the day after. For example, some of our guests would have the wedding at Galgorm then go to Parisien the next day for lunch. It’s all about the “experience”. This used to be the reserve of destination weddings abroad as guests made a holiday out of their trip, but now the multiday, “destination feel” event is something couples are doing closer to home.”

Social Media Generation

“We all remember the standard was to have a photographer, and maybe a videographer to capture the big day,” says Beth. “Now there’s a third to factor in, and that’s the social media content creator. We’re seeing them more and more across all our venues as couples want to capture every moment – often putting them out live on the day on the couple’s social media channels.

“And this isn’t just for the well-known, or for major

social media influencers, this is just couples who have grown up with high-quality online content, and really value it. Not only are the content creators capturing the bridal party and guests in candid VTs, they’re also getting the photographer and videographer in the shots creating full, glossy content for socials to reflect the full magic of the day.”

Venues with Impact

“In the past, couples would pick a beautiful hotel, but one that wouldn’t necessarily reflect their style,” says Beth. “They would spend a lot of their budget dressing the room to transform it from what it was to how they wanted it to be. Now, couples are opting for venues that already look incredible, and suit their own style and tastes, so that need to splash money on décor just isn’t a factor anymore.

“From picture-perfect and quite quirky hotels like The Rabbit, to museums and venues with real impact, choosing somewhere slightly different that already works for your style and taste is becoming the way to do it – and crucially, it allows you to channel the budget into backdrops with impact or additional entertainment or catering for the day.”

Cakes and coupes

“The wedding cake, or perhaps a “cake tower” is still a big factor for most wedding days,” says Beth. “But not for all. Increasingly we’re seeing the “cut the cake” moment being swapped for a Coupe Champagne Tower, where the couple pour champagne down the tower of glasses, which makes for an incredible picture – and gorgeous footage for socials. The “back-drop” for the cake or coupe is also a must, making pictures really pop.

“There might also be a dessert table, packed full of opulent dessert options, which again looks amazing on camera – and tastes phenomenal too, of course. Food is being reimagined. It’s not just the big threecourse dinner, with a finger buffet in the evening. People are going for all sorts of cool options, like a Mexican fiesta in the evening, or anything at all. It’s really fun to get creative.”

Goodbye ‘Receiving

Line’

“I did this at my wedding, and lots of couples used to do it,” says Beth. “The couple and their immediate

family would greet the guests one by one outside the church or at the hotel to make sure they spoke to everyone. But now, with the longer events, this fairly formal aspect really isn’t as common as it used to be as there’s more opportunity to spend time with everyone in a more laid-back way over a few days.”

Animals welcome!

“Years ago, it would have been really unusual for a couple to have a pet at a wedding,” says Beth. “But now, it’s 100% accepted and I’d say we’ve got a dog at a wedding nearly every week. To have a pet featuring in pictures, or even taking part in the ceremony itself in some way, is not a strange request for us at all anymore. We have even welcomed a horse!”

Gender fluid

“Wedding parties are really mixing it up at the minute in terms of who does what,” says Beth. “We’ve got flower boys coming down the aisle, we’ve got Best Women, men in the bridal party, brides and maidsof-honour doing fantastic speeches. As with most other things, the fundamentals are there in terms of traditions in that the same things are happening, but couples are doing it their own way and choosing precisely who they want for each role.”

Table Plans 2.0

“Back in the day, a table plan would consist of names listed out on a printed piece of paper,” says Beth. “Couples would often come up with quirky names for the table to give guests a giggle, but the ante has been well and truly upped here, like it has been everywhere else. Now, we’ve got table plans presented on photographs, on records, on vases of flowers. The more creative the better, as far as the couples are concerned. And of course, it all looks great for social media.”

The Walk In

“This was always a lovely part of the day, when the couple walked into the room to a tune they loved after the wedding,” says Beth. “But while it used to be a pretty small part of the day, now it’s a major moment of the day for lots of couples. Guests are encouraged to swing those napkins aloft while the turns are pumping. We’ve had one couple led in by their little son who was driving a remote-control car,

we’ve had grooms dancing their way in, we’ve had big elaborate moments involving the full wedding party. It’s definitely as impactful and important as the walk out of the ceremony, which used to be the main moment.”

Multi-cultural celebrations

“Couples are getting more confident in incorporating different cultures into their celebrations,” says Beth. “We have lots of people who are getting married close to home, but their partners are from different backgrounds or parts of the world, and more and more those varied traditions are being embraced. At a recent wedding the bride was from Northern Ireland and the groom was from Nigeria, and we had this amazing moment when they did a full Nigerian walk in, where they danced into the room and did a traditional Nigerian ‘money spray’ where guests shower the couple with money. It made their wedding so special and personal to them, and that’s what we want to help couples create, whether it be through unique food offerings, entertainment or their own specific traditions. Whatever works for them makes their wedding – their event – one to remember for everyone involved, and we love to help them incorporate and celebrate their own cultures.”

Gorgeous groomsmen – and multiple dresses for the bride

“While women’s wedding dresses are still as incredible as ever, and really there’s a huge range of what people now choose, it’s the men we’re watching now,” says Beth. “Gone are the standard suits and one-colour ties for the groomsmen, now they’re really going for it with their fashion choices. It’s great to see because it’s a chance for the groom and his party to really have fun with fashion on such a huge day in their lives. They’ve got more confidence in going for something different, which often creates a talking point on the day. On the bridal front, it’s really not unusual for the bride to have another dress to change into in the evening. One wedding dress no more!”

Draping – and colour scape 2025

“Drapes are having a big moment,” says Beth. “And we expect that to continue into 2025. In terms of colours, trends come and go, but red is a big one

for next year, as well as metallic colouring. Couples make their own choices depending on their tastes of course, but these fashions do have an impact on what we see.”

Music noon til night

“Again, it’s the full “experience” for guests that comes into play with music now,” says Beth. “No longer do couples just book a band to play for after dinner, now there’s very often music at every point in the day - from the ceremony, arrival and reception drinks, and surprise performances through dinner, to elevated band and DJ set-ups for the evening reception and even Day 2.

“Couples now have so much choice and they are definitely well-informed and discerning what they want. If they’re savvy, they may pull back on one aspect of the day to make something else really special and memorable to them. They’re a confident bunch – and it shows in their weddings.”

MARTIN M

LET’S

GET VISIBLE DAY!!!

IN 2023, SPORT IRELAND AND SPORTING PRIDE HOSTED A FIRST OF ITS KIND LGBTI+ INCLUSION EVENT ON THE SPORT IRELAND CAMPUS. THIS CONSISTED OF 2 MORNING PANEL DISCUSSIONS, FIRST BEING THE PRACTITIONER PANEL WHICH GAVE THOSE INVOLVED THE OPPORTUNITY TO HIGHLIGHT THE WORK THEY ARE DOING TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE LGBTI+ INCLUSION IN SPORT. THE SECOND PANEL BEING AN INDIVIDUAL PANEL FOCUSED ON THE LIVED OF EXPERIENCE IN SPORT OF LGBTI+ PEOPLE WITH A PROFILE IN IRELAND. THIS WAS ACCOMPANIED BY AN AFTERNOON ACTIVITY SESSION WHICH TOOK PLACE IN THE SPORT IRELAND CAMPUS INDOOR PITCH.

This year we hosted our 2nd let’s get visible in partnership with Sport Ireland on October 19th. “Let’s Get Visible” day is a national initiative aimed at promoting inclusivity and visibility for the LGBTQIA+ community in sports. This event highlights the importance of creating safe and welcoming environments for all athletes, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The campaign encourages sports clubs, organizations, and athletes across the country to participate in inclusive activities and wear rainbow colours as a symbol of support. A key objective is to raise awareness about the challenges LGBTQIA+ individuals often face in sports, such as discrimination, lack of representation, or feeling unwelcome. By promoting visibility, “Let’s Get Visible” fosters an atmosphere of acceptance and encourages open conversations about diversity in sports settings.

A variety of multi-sport events take place on the day, ranging from team-based sports like football, rugby, and hockey to individual sports such as athletics. These events showcase the participation of LGBTQIA+ athletes and allies alike, reinforcing the message that sports are for everyone, regardless of background or identity. This inclusive approach helps to break down barriers that have historically kept many from fully participating in sporting communities.

“Let’s Get Visible” is part of Sport Ireland’s broader commitment to equality, ensuring that sports organizations at every level actively work toward inclusivity and Sporting Pride are delighted to guide them on that journey. Initiatives like this contribute to normalizing LGBTQIA+ presence in sporting arenas, emphasizing the importance of respect, teamwork, and mutual support in achieving success, both on and off the field.

Through such efforts, Sporting Pride aims to make sport an accessible and inclusive space for all individuals, promoting a future where everyone, regardless of identity, can thrive in the sporting world.

National Coming out Day!!!

Please note, this column is the opinion of the columinst and not that of GNI or Romeo & Julian Publiccations Ltd.

On October 11th I teamed up once again with my favourite partner in crime, The Honourable Lord Mayor of Belfast Micky Murray for a National Coming out Day Social, hosted in the historic setting of

the Lord Mayor’s Chambers, is a landmark event celebrating LGBTQIA+ inclusion and visibility in sports. The gathering brings together key sports organizations and community leaders, highlighting Belfast’s commitment to fostering an inclusive sporting environment for all.

This meeting aimed to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for LGBTQIA+ individuals in sports, while also encouraging dialogue around the challenges they face. It was attended by a variety of sporting groups, including two very handsome special guests from Belfast Giants; Mark Cooper and Jeff Baum alongside representatives of Ulster GAA, Athletics NI and Sport NI, all of whom play a vital role in promoting equality and inclusion in their respective disciplines. These NGB’s had their first opportunities to meet and interact with members of Belfast’s 10 LGBTQIA+ Inclusive sports clubs from outdoor swimming and hiking to Rugby and Softball and all in-between, there is now an activity and space to suit the needs of every LGBTQIA+ person in Belfast.

The Belfast Giants, as one of the city’s most prominent sports teams, have been champions of inclusivity, regularly participating in events like Pride Nights and actively supporting LGBTQIA+ causes. Their presence at the social reinforces the message that professional sports teams have a responsibility to lead by example in creating inclusive spaces. Similarly, the GAA’s involvement reflects the growing commitment within traditional Irish sports to support LGBTQIA+ athletes, coaches, and fans, breaking down stereotypes and fostering acceptance within the Gaelic games community.

Athletics NI, which governs athletics across Northern Ireland, also plays a pivotal role in promoting equality. Their participation in the event underscores the importance of inclusivity at all levels of sport, from grassroots to elite competition. With the involvement of Sporting Pride, an organization dedicated to creating inclusive environments for LGBTQIA+ people in sports, the event highlights the ongoing collaboration between advocacy groups and sports bodies to drive meaningful change.

Sport NI, Northern Ireland’s leading sports authority, lends its support to the event by emphasizing the

need for policy-driven actions to ensure that sporting organizations adopt inclusive practices. This includes creating safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals and ensuring equal access to opportunities, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

In the Lord Mayor’s Chambers, the social event provides a space for athletes, officials, and community members to share experiences, network, and show solidarity with those who may be struggling with their identity in the sports world. The event reinforces Belfast’s commitment to inclusivity, making it clear that sport in the city belongs to everyone. Through events like this, the Belfast Lord Mayor’s National Coming Out Day Social serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of visibility, support, and unity in creating a sporting culture that celebrates diversity and allows every individual to thrive and Sporting Pride would like to thank everyone who attended the event which came to a close with a group photo showing the growth and strength of this impressive community.

NEILL’S HILL.

Neill’s Hill is a neighbourhood institution in Ballyhackamore. This popular restaurant has a stylish yet informal vibe serving breakfast, lunch, evening meals, and Sunday carvery specials.

The Brasserie menu features small plates, local cuts, fresh fish, fantastic meat-free options and a great value lunchtime specials menu.

We started with a steaming bowl of Mushroom Soup, some Padron Peppers with sea salt, and a Beetroot Salad with crispy chicory leaves, grapes, and tangy Gorgonzola.

To follow we ordered two of the Lunch Specials; a flaky Smoked Haddock on creamy mash with mustard cream & a perfectly poached egg, and cheesy Aubergine Parmigiana in a tomato sauce with a side of garlic baby potatoes-a snip a £11 per dish.

From the regular lunch menu, the golden Chicken Schnitzel with melting garlic butter, rocket salad, & frites was moist, tender and delicious.

And the dessert of Meringues with passionfruit & hot chocolate sauce was a light yet satisfying way to finish a brilliant lunch.

MEMBERS’ DINING ROOM, STORMONT.

We love to visit The Members’ Dining Room on the first floor of Parliament Buildings, especially when it’s time to celebrate. The beautiful restaurant, with its floor to ceiling wood-panelled walls, sumptuous carpets, immaculately laid tables and panoramic views leading down from Stormont and sweeping up to the Castlereagh Hills, is the perfect venue to enjoy a special occasion.

The chefs are committed to using only locally available fresh produce and ingredients, and there is also an excellent drinks list.

To start, we had the Soup of the Day served with freshly baked bread, the Keenan’s Smoked Haddock Fishcakes with celeriac remoulade, shaved fennel salad and dill dressing, (which could also be served as a main course), an Autumn Salad of beetroot, goat’s cheese, bacon, balsamic and candied walnuts, and Curried Cauliflower Fritters with toasted almonds, pomegranate and lime dressing.

Our main courses included a flaky Oven Baked Cod Fillet with basil, lemon and pepper crust, minted pea puree, triple cooked chips and a caper butter, and a plant-based Crispy Fried Tofu on pickled cabbage slaw, coriander noodles and peanut sauce.

To finish, we had Warm Bramley Apple & Blackberry Crumble with Glastry Farm whiskey ice cream, Coconut and Sour Cherry Mousse with coconut sable biscuit, and The Parliament Buildings’ signature dessert, a delightful Iced Lime Parfait with Jawbox Gin syrup, honeycomb shard and raspberry dust.

And the three course lunch is exceptionally good value at just £29.50.

Andersonstown Rd has had an amazing new makeover, with a selection of great food and drink menus to enjoy at one of Belfast’s premier sports bars.

After an extensive refurbishment, The Whitefort now offers an excellent space to experience craft beers, cocktails and wines alongside fantastic food, whilst providing sports fans the opportunity to enjoy 12 screens over 2 floors showing big games and races, have a game of pool, or even try their hand at darts. In fact, groups of friends can enjoy fast-paced games at “Flight Club”, with drinks and amazing sharing plates in their own playing area.

We were recently invited to see the new improvements and try some food. As well as a great value lunch menu with dishes at £12.95, there’s a terrific all day menu featuring small plates, burgers, mains, sides & desserts.

Starting with a crispy, spicy Salt and Chilli Squid with fresh chilli, coriander, salad and a harissa and lime mayo, and a delicious dish of Prawns Pil Pil with masses of juicy tiger prawns in a garlic & chilli oil and garlic ciabatta, we knew this was going to be a flavourful

To follow, we had a generously portioned plate of sizzling Chicken Fajitas with tortillas, sour cream, guacamole, cheese & salad, and the Fish of the Day was a perfectly pink, crispy-skinned salmon on herby crushed potatoes, tenderstem broccoli, prawns and a creamy chive velouté.

All our dishes were freshly prepared, beautifully presented, and packed with flavour. We loved this brilliant

new version of this iconic West Belfast venue.

Portrush’s intimate, boutique hotel Elephant Rock epitomises luxury, glamour and fun. With its quirky interior design, and incredible sea views, the hotel is the perfect venue to spoil yourself with an elegant and sophisticated getaway.

We called in to try the Lunch Menu. The team in the restaurant provides a dining experience which champions fresh, seasonal ingredients, and showcases local produce through its contemporary menu.

The dining room decor is a delight; blue & green velvet chairs, striking monochromatic marble tables, and art pieces including a gorgeous oil painting of the stunning Elephant Rock landmark.

To start, we couldn’t resist a “tipple or two” from the rather excellent cocktail list. “The Skerries” (which we could see, incidentally, from our wonderful bay window table) was a dark rum and pineapple delight, and the “Breakfast Martini” uses local Balsalt Gin and marmalade to create a tangy, citrus treat!

We chose the Frankie Bombay Burrito, stuffed with cauliflower, potato, chickpea, pickled red onion, spinach, & mint chutney served with skin-on fries & a mini salad, and the Fish Pie crammed with cod, petit pois, capers & diced tomato in a creamy lemon sauce,

ELEPHANT ROCK.
THE WHITEFORT.
The Whitefort on the
ELEPHANT ROCK

Broccoli were also top notch.

To finish, the Date & Orange Pudding with butterscotch and honeycomb was an indulgent treat, accompanied by a couple of nostalgic Sweet Shop cocktails, a “Black Jack” and a “Not Supposed To Chewit” to transport us back to childhood favourites with a grown up twist.

There’s also an upstairs cocktail lounge to enjoy a few Elephant Rock signature drinks in elegant surroundings.

THE DEER’S HEAD.

The Deer’s Head serves up some of the best pub grub in Belfast city centre. In collaboration with Urban Scullery, the menu features great brunches, bar snacks, small plates, burgers, seafood, and other terrific dishes.

We called in for lunch, and loved the “Green Eggs (And Ham)”; a new addition to the menu with whipped labneh and zhoug, topped with cashew dukka, hot chilli honey, pickled raisins and poached eggs, sprinkled with pancetta dust, and served with Scullery Sourdough for dipping.

The Seafood Pie is also a favourite; lightly poached cod, salmon and smoked haddock in a classic white wine & cream sauce, topped with cheesy mash and greens. Delicious!

And as always, a portion of Jonny’s phenomenal Battered Pickled Onions had to be ordered-perfect with a pint of well rounded, malty “Red Cow Red Ale”.

The Deers Head; Belfast’s first fully operational on-site craft brewery, serving an exclusive range of small batch beers, house specials, and rotating guest draughts, alongside Urban Scullery’s amazing foodie fare. Irresistible!

Wellness Holiday exploring time out

Give yourself the opportunity to explore time out from everyday life.

We all know holidays are supposed to be a fun time for you to relax but often what you planned to do when on holiday often goes array due to a number of things such as , Travel delays, Family & Friend issues increasing costs, work pressures and of course the weather itself.

I want you to think about Wellness as a holiday option and even think about a Solo Wellness breaks ie time away from daily life. More importantly I wish to highlight the benefits and provide more information about why its good for all members of the LGBTQ+ community to really think about planning a wellness holiday in the future. You might just thank me for highlighting such a lessor known product and service just waiting for you to explore & experience.

I must explain that the term Wellness can take on many forms in life itself and especially when you think about holidays ie, It could be a health & fitness holiday, a culture retreat, a holiday away from social media, a body detox holiday, a Solo find yourself holiday or simply a Body Pamper holiday. All of these types of wellness holidays focus on one key area and that is helping yourself live and feel better.

I have personally been on many styles of wellness holidays mainly Health related like body health cleansing where you focus on your nutrition and fitness and relaxation for 2 -3 weeks. You might hear of them even as a training camps or body detoxing life experiences. Regardless of why you decide to take this type of holiday it has to ultimately benefit you so doing your research is paramount for you to get the very best out of your experience. Budget is of course important to start with but I think you should really focus on why you want this type of holiday or indeed need it in the first place. Suffering mentally in silence is never good so reach out to family , friends or even your GP to discuss your own personal

situation because they might also have helpful ideas or solutions.

If like me you have suffered any format of trauma in your life maybe due to ill health, family members passing, losing a job etc you can often feel lost mentally and physically about how you feel and what you want out of life moving forward. Usually a holiday is a short time out from the usual day to day of living a life but why you wanted a break or indeed the reason you left to go on a holiday is often not resolved when you return so mentally any issue is ultimately unresolved and will continue to take its Toal on you when you comeback.

Below are some of my ideas as to where you might what to think about for your first wellness holidays:

Thailand is by far one of my favourite places in the world to go on holiday and switch off from life back here in Northern Ireland. I can first hand recommend Kamalya Wellness Scantuary & Holistic Spa. Situated on the beautiful island of Koh Samui Kamalya Wellness offers an individual opportunity to take a wellness sabbatical here you will be at one with nature and yourself its a truly individual product with multiple services to match your body and minds needs. If ready for a personal journey I can guarantee your life will be better for experiencing this life escaping destination.

If Thailand is too far for you to travel then don’t worry Spain, Greece and even the UAE offer similar destinations for you to reconnect with yourself and plan for a better life.

SHA Wellness in Spain is another product I have been very lucky to have had experience in even though its only around 10 years old the destination is well regarded offering products from helping with Sleep, Sexual desire even cognitive boosting programs. Due to it be closer to the UK& Ireland you can take shorter 4 day programs or 2 weeks. At SHA you can found out so much about yourself both medically, physically

and spiritually that you will be glad to have take the step into selfceare holidays. Of course none of these holidays have to be taken as a solo traveler but I personally think that you get much more out of it because it allows you that time to be free and really dig deep into your feelings as well as understanding what your body is telling you.

Most countries around the world offer wellness breaks/ expereinces, Thailand & Spain are just two that I have personally experienced but I know Austria, Greece , UAE and even Norway all offer unique perspective on wellness holidays.

If you are are shouting as you read this thinking I’m sure the price is high then yes it can indeed be high but to me your life is worth investing in and so if this is a one off opportunity for you to find yourself and build a new future then I am 100% behind you trying this sort of holiday.

Of course this type of holiday might be way out of peoples bank balances and so you can think about wellness as a thing you can do at home also. Northern Ireland offers multiple hotels and resorts now offering wellness breaks. These can range from weight loss to mental health retreats both as ongoing treatments for you or as one off self care breaks.

Why should you think about booking a wellness holiday ? The most simple answer is to give yourself the opportunity to recharge. Life in 2024 is not easy for any of us and by taking time out in any way you can to help boost your mental health has to be beneficial. I myself have struggled through the years with low self esteem, poor work life balance, relationship problems, not to mention financial worries. None of us our perfect and trying to compete and even compare yourself with others is ultimately pointless and self destructive. The point of a wellness holiday is by focusing on you and what you need right now means you can move forward in life. The fact that your reading this and its giving you some new thoughts around a holiday for yourself is an excellent place to start.

The LGBTQ+ community is known for its big parties, large clubs, huge events etc often also with excess alcohol and drugs mixed in. This type of lifestyle is not sustainable in the longterm and really I think often leads many of us into depression, debt and even loneliness. You may not even realise you are in this circle of life at the moment but burnout happens to us all.

If I can give any advice it would be don’t be afraid of wanting to try wellness experiences male or female and regardless of age or sexuality you will thank yourself for allowing yourself the gift of self exploration. If you have never even heard of wellness then I am glad I have brought the service into you thoughts. Moving forward do some local research here in UK & Ireland and experience the multitude of services from body detox, the benefits around different massage treatments to nutrition and health and wellness lifestyle training even CBT.

As always thanks for reading and I hope you feel like you can connect with the wellness sector in all of its formats locally or even globally as part of a holiday or city break.

Keep travelling don’t just dream about as we all just get one life so lets try living the best one we can.

XAND

WHY GROWLR IS EVERYTHING GRINDR ISN’T.

LET ME BEGIN BY CONFESSING MY GUILTY PLEASURE. I AM A SOCIAL MEDIA WHORE. I’M ESPECIALLY ADDICTED TO LIVE STREAMING. GIVE ME A RING LIGHT, A FILTER, A GUITAR, FOUR CANS OF SPECIAL BREW, TWO MINIATURE BOTTLES OF SMIRNOFF, AND A DECK OF TAROT CARDS, AND I’LL KEEP YOU ENTERTAINED FOR HOURS ON END.

As I turned 46 last month, which is almost 200 years old in gay years, I decided that naturally this would be the perfect time in my train wreck of a life to experiment with makeup and I’m actually getting really fucking good at it if I do say so myself! Granted, when you’re thoroughly shitfaced at 2 in the morning and you’ve got the filters and sparkles goin’ galore and Purple Disco Machine blasting out on Poo Tube who doesn’t think they’re Jeffree Fucking Star eh? In reality, I probably look more like Bernard Manning! But my point is that I come alive on camera and being a huge fan of stand-up comedy there are no shortage of dick jokes and embarrassing sex stories!

You see, apart from being an attention-seeking, morally flexible, self-obsessed, middle-aged, foulmouthed, absolutely zero fucks left, never-hasbeen, I’m also quite the extrovert and I grew up in a highly narcissistic family structure, so as much as I pretend to be interested in you the truth is that I’m genuinely happiest when it’s all about me. What?

Hey, at least I’m being honest! Right? So

anywho, despite the fact that I enjoy entertaining people and making them laugh either with me or at me, I’m not bothered either way, (without the filters I’ve got a face like a bag of smashed crabs I really do) in real life I suffer terribly from social phobia, raging agoraphobia, Impostor Syndrome, Schizotypal Personality Disorder (which is about as much fun as two sandpaper dildos covered in sticky back plastic), low self-esteem, anxiety and chronic “Everybody hates me” disorder, and so the image I project in a live stream is very different from the reality! In short, there’s a great deal of turd polishing happening on a regular basis.

Just the other day I was caught out for having a profile picture I took in April of 2015 on my profile which was a tad embarrassing, to say the least, but in my defence, I’m not using Growlr to hookup, get married, or have dinner with your parents, I’m using it to have fun and chat with likemindedpeople. It’s been more than two years since I’ve had sex, or a date, or a cuddle, or a kiss, or any kind of meaningful human contact, so much as I might be criticised for misrepresentation it’s prettyclear when folks come into my live that I’m no fuckin’ Instagram model ffs and I ain’t asking you to pay my bills or put your cock inside me! And besides, it’s Growlr hunny, no one’s calling VOGUE for anyone on that app, and that’s the whole point. It’s a place where fat dudes like me get to feel sexy and have fun without the worry of cunty, sarcastic, highly judgemental little bitch boyz coming for us. I mean have you been on Grindr recently? If you’re over the age of 21 and not perfect it’s brutal! Those bitches will rip you a new asshole faster than Trisha Paytas can eat a mother fuckin’ burrito!

My point is that for those of us who could do with losing a stone or four and who want to hang out with all the boyz and not feel like troglodytes and who don’t necessarily want to hookup for bum fun, Growlr is a far superior app because of the free, easy to use, live streaming (with filters and sparkles when they work) and the fact that it ain’t a beauty contest and so you’re far less likely to have your self-esteem lowered by some obnoxious little cunt who has decided that anyone over the age of 21 is too old to be on social media and should sit in a dark room

with a paper bag over their head. Also, what I love about it is that you can play as much music as you want so I frequently crank up a MegaMix of Kylie, Dua, Madonna, and Miley with a bit of Arianna chucked in for good measure or get Purple Disco Machine (who I’d ride like a stolen bike by the by) on the go for an hour or two, which creates a really fun and frisky atmosphere. And you can invite dudes to come in your box (which sounds ruder than it is) so you can have a chit-chat and get a bit social innit. That’s especially good when you are a sad, lonely, bitter, old curmudgeon like me!

So this Halloween, I say fuck Grindr. Sure you might be lucky enough to get your end away but with the right poppers, some JLube, and a decent alien-themed spooky Flesh Light, you can wank away to your heart’s content then live stream and talk about it to random strangers! Just don’t get too fruity or they’ll ban you, (and yes I speak from personal experience - apparently demonstrating how I deep throat using an empty beer bottle goes against community guidelines - BOO!). If Growlr is a bit too tame and you want to watch dudes jerk off or finger their butt holes there’s always U4BEAR which isn’t as good pixel for pixel but do you really need 4K quality when you just want to bust a nut before bedtime? Not really…

When it comes to Newcastle I have so many fond memories

There was probably not a year that passed from the age of 1 to maybe my 20’s that I didn’t visit with family or friends though I do feel it isn’t the case for those born from 2000 which I’d love to change.

Generation Z & Generation Alpha (Born 1995 - Present) this is particularly for you.

Newcastle, Co. Down, is a charming seaside town nestled at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland. Known for its natural beauty, the town offers a variety of outdoor activities and attractions, making it a perfect destination for families, nature lovers, and adventure seekers alike. One of the top attractions is Tollymore Forest Park, a vast woodland with scenic walking trails, rivers, and stunning views of the Mourne Mountains. It’s perfect for hiking, picnicking, or exploring with children. Another must-see is Murlough National Nature Reserve, a 6,000-year-old sand dune system, ideal for walks and bird watching, with access to Newcastle’s beautiful beach. For families, Newcastle Promenade offers a classic seaside experience, complete with ice cream parlors, cafés, and shops. The promenade leads to Royal County Down Golf Club, one of the best golf courses in the world, which also offers stunning views of the coastline and mountains.

Adventurers can enjoy mountain biking, horseback riding, or even paragliding over the Mournes. For those looking for relaxation, the town’s peaceful surroundings and cozy accommodations provide the perfect escape. Whether you’re exploring nature or enjoying the town’s hospitality, Newcastle, Co. Down, offers something for everyone.

On to our review at Tollymore Lodge

The drive from Lurgan to Newcastle, Co. Down, takes about an hour and offers scenic views of the Northern Irish countryside. As you pass through towns like Banbridge and Castlewellan, you’ll see rolling hills, lush greenery, and glimpses of the Mourne Mountains. A highlight is stopping at Castlewellan Forest Park, where you can explore the lake, gardens, and famous Peace Maze. The approach to Newcastle reveals breathtaking coastal and mountain views, building excitement for the destination.

Although i’m not overly familiar with the area we had no trouble finding the lodge thanks to my reliable maps app we got there without a hitch. Tollymore Lodge is situated in an area that feels wonderfully secluded, providing peace and tranquility, yet it is easily accessible. You can actually see Slieve Donard from the beautiful garden.

Martina the owner was awaiting our arrival, she actually welcomed us earlier than planned and gave us a tour taking time out of her schedule so we could get off and explore.

When entering I was taken aback, the room was modern, open-plan design with a sleek kitchen, dining, and living area seamlessly integrated. The kitchen has clean lines with light wood countertops and modern appliances, while the adjacent round dining table adds a cozy touch. The beige sectional sofa with plush pillows dominates the living area, creating a comfortable and inviting space. Accents like fresh flowers, soft lighting, and glass-topped tables enhance the room’s warmth and contemporary charm.

There were 2 Double Bedrooms with inviting designs and calming color palettes. The bed, adorned with soft grey pillows and a plush throw, sits beneath a serene beach-themed canvas, adding a calming coastal vibe. A sleek bedside table with modern drawers is topped with a soft-glow lamp and a small decorative plant, creating a relaxing ambiance. The textured rug enhances the comfort of the space, making it a peaceful retreat.

This bathroom features a clean, modern design with white fixtures and light wood flooring. A curved glass shower enclosure adds a sleek touch, while the compact vanity unit provides storage beneath a contemporary basin. The round, decorative mirror with a geometric frame brings a stylish element to the space. Three framed seashell prints on the wall offer a subtle coastal theme, enhancing the bathroom’s calming and fresh atmosphere. Overall, it’s bright and minimalist.

Tollymore Lodge in Newcastle offers an exceptional blend of comfort, luxury, and convenience. During my recent stay with my 3-year-old foster son, I was thoroughly impressed by how well-equipped the lodge was, catering to every need a family could imagine. From the moment we arrived, it was clear everything was throught out with both relaxation and practicality in mind. Equipped with all the modern conveniences you’d expect from a high-end property—Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen, a flat-screen TV, and even a cooking hobs which proved invaluable when traveling with a toddler. Every room felt comfortable and welcoming, and the attention to detail in every

— staycation newcastle — corner of the lodge was exceptional.

What stood out the most for me was how child-friendly the lodge was. It’s rare to find accommodation that genuinely caters to the needs of families with young children, but Tollymore Lodge went above and beyond. The lodge had a selection of kids’ DVDs, which were a lifesaver during quieter moments or when we just wanted to unwind in the evenings. They also left plenty of little treats that were scoffed, which made our stay feel even more special. Martina actually went way above expectations by sourcing a bed safety rail for us. It was these thoughtful touches that made a huge difference and demonstrated the care and consideration put into ensuring we had a fantastic experience.

In summary, Tollymore Lodge exceeded all expectations and provided a wonderful retreat for me and my foster son. Its family-friendly features, luxurious touches, and convenient location make it a top choice for anyone visiting the Newcastle area.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful escape in nature or a comfortable base for exploring the sights, Tollymore Lodge has everything you could need. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

THE HATCH street food

The Hatch, Street Food in Newcastle, Co. Down, is a must-visit for anyone craving delicious, fresh, and flavorful street food in a casual setting. Located right by the beach, The Hatch offers an extensive menu of mouth-watering options, perfect for a quick bite after a walk along the promenade or a day exploring the nearby Mourne Mountains. What stands is the quality and creativity of the food. Their burgers are juicy, well-seasoned, and served with a variety of unique toppings. Portions are generous, and everything is made fresh to order, ensuring a satisfying experience.

The atmosphere is laid-back and friendly, making it an ideal spot for families, groups of friends, or solo travelers looking to enjoy great food in a relaxed environment. The outdoor seating adds to the charm, allowing you to take in the sea air while enjoying your meal. Overall, The Hatch offers a fantastic street food experience that perfectly complements the coastal vibe of Newcastle. Highly

recommended for foodies and casual diners alike!

Where it began...

We started out in an old gazebo, one grill with hopes and dreams. From this we teamed up with our local butchers who provide grass fed sustainable beef, local to the Mournes to trial, test and create the best possible burger recipe that worked for us.

After saving up for our first food truck, we hit the road, pitching up in our local towns and traveling up and down the country doing shows, markets and events.

We started to amass a large following with our passion for quality street food. With our chefs having over 20 years of experience in the catering industry, we quickly marketed ourselves as a specialty street food vendor. We started catering

for weddings, corporate events and parties. We are well known for our wide selection of ever changing street food, burgers and loaded fries topped with smoked meats, which we smoke ourselves in house, using only sourced fresh, local ingredients.

Our biggest achievement to date is winning the best burger in Ireland 2019 award. Lots of hard work and commitment went into getting us where we are today with the help of our family and good friends.

Our Carbon footprint and environmental impact is very important to us. We insist on only using biodegradable packing.

Logan Hardcore... trades glitz & Glamour of drag for the warmth and glow of handmade candles

Logan Hardcore, the celebrated drag performer known for lighting up the stages of New York City and Fire Island, is embarking on a new creative journey with the launch of his new business, Radiant Light Candle Co. After 14 years in the spotlight, Hardcore has traded the glitz and glamour of drag for the warmth and glow of handmade candles, creating a brand that is deeply personal and inspired by his life’s journey of love and loss. “After quitting performing, and reaching a point of sobriety from drug and alcohol addiction, I needed an outlet for my artistic energy,” Hardcore, who now goes by the name Logan Slaughter and uses he/ him pronouns, shares. “Candles became that outlet, and with each one I create, I am reminded that even in the darkest of times, we all have an inner Radiant Light.”

The significance of family is at the heart of Radiant Light Candles. Logan’s father, a real-life cowboy, played an integral role in the development of one of the brand’s most meaningful candles. “My father was living with us and battling end stage cancer when I created my company. The Cowboy candle is named after him,” Logan Slaughter explains. “He was the epitome of strength and support in my life, and we worked on this candle together. He chose the scent, the wooden wick for the natural crackling sound, and even the design of the label, which features the cowboy hat tattoo I have on my finger. The candle was a labor of love, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart.”

Another candle that holds deep personal significance is “Mary,” named after Slaughter’s late mother. “My mom passed away in 2016 after fighting cortical basal degeneration for five years,” he continues. “Throughout her illness, she never complained. She simply embodied resilience. Mary was the first candle

I created, and the scent has lavender notes, her favorite fragrance.”

In addition to being a personal tribute to her family, Radiant Light Candle Co. reflects Logan Slaughter’s dedication to the LGBTQIA+ and substance abuse recovery communities.

“Being part of both has taught me the importance of inclusivity and compassion. Radiant Light Candle Co. is a brand that stands for more than just beautifully crafted candles. It’s about building a supportive, empowering community where people can find hope, healing, and connection.”

Slaughter hand-pours every candle in small batches to ensure the highest level of care and craftsmanship. Presentation is key, too. “I make sure that each candle is visually appealing and luxurious.” The Essential Collection, for example, comes in sleek matte black vessels, while the brand’s Pride candles are hand-dyed with rainbow colors throughout the wax, ensuring each one is vibrant and unique.

Slaughter is also careful in choosing the right materials for the candles. “We use coconut

wax for its exceptional scent throw,” he says. “It’s soft, soot-free, and burns cleanly, which is important to me, especially with a young daughter at home. I want to know exactly what is in the air when I burn candles, and coconut wax offers the best solution.”

His daughter, Chloé, who was adopted after a challenging three-year process, also has her own special candle in the collection. It features a holographic prism vessel with wax melt hearts on top that leave a shimmer as they melt. “It’s designed to reflect the joy and sparkle that our most precious gift brings into our lives.”

Logan Slaughter was named Best Candlemaker of the Year 2024 by Westchester Magazine. Being recognized as the best candlemaker, especially as a queer male maker in a traditionally female-dominated field, was an honor for him. “It reminded me that all the hard work—working late nights and balancing my responsibilities as a parent—has been worth it.”

As he continues to grow Radiant Light, he has big plans for the future. “I’m focusing on getting into small boutiques across the country. I love supporting small businesses and being part of someone else’s dream. I’m also excited to continue developing new products, such as bath bombs and body products, which I’ve been testing and perfecting for a while now.”

A DAZZLING EXPERIENCE AT SALON INTERNATIONAL: CELEBRATING CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION IN HAIRDRESSING

Please note,

This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant world of Salon International, a premier event that brings together the brightest minds and most innovative talents in the industry. As I stepped into the bustling venue, the air was electric with excitement and creativity, a palpable energy that set the stage for an unforgettable experience. I was honored to represent Revlon Professional, showcasing their latest products and trends alongside side with my visionaries 2023 brothers Ashley long and dodge mackay and visionaries 2024 Hollie, Stephanie, Taylor and Sophie and we can’t forget the head of the ship Karen and Rio and the rest of the Revlon team

The event was a spectacular showcase of artistry, where stylists /brands from all corners of the UK came together to present their work on live models. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as each stylist took to the stage, transforming their models into living canvases that reflected the latest trends and techniques. It was a celebration of creativity, where every snip of the scissors and every stroke of the brush told a story of passion and dedication. The audience was captivated, their eyes glued to the stage as they witnessed the magic unfold before them.

As I stood backstage, I felt a rush of pride and excitement. The energy was contagious, and I was surrounded by some of the most talented hairstylists in the industry, each one a master of their craft. The camaraderie among us was palpable; we were all there to inspire and uplift one another, sharing tips, techniques, and a mutual love for the art of hairdressing. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with this profession in the first place—the ability to create, to innovate, and to connect with others through our shared passion.

One of the highlights of the event was seeing my work displayed in the prestigious British Hairdressing Awards gallery. It was a surreal moment, standing in front of my creations, surrounded by the stunning works of other talented stylists from across the UK. Each piece was a testament to the hard work, creativity, and dedication that goes into our craft. The gallery was a visual feast, showcasing a diverse array of styles, colours, and techniques that left me in awe. I felt a deep sense of gratitude to be part of such a talented community, where each stylist brought their unique vision to life.

As I wandered through the gallery, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that brought me to this moment. The countless hours spent honing my skills, the late nights experimenting with new techniques, and the unwavering support from mentors and peers all culminated in this incredible experience. It was a reminder that success is not just about individual achievements, but about the connections we make and the community we build along the way.

The anticipation for the British Hairdressing Awards

ceremony on November 25th in London is palpable. Hosted by Schwarzkopf and HJ, this prestigious event promises to be a night of celebration and recognition for the incredible talent within our industry. As the winners are revealed, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves. Regardless of the outcome, being part of this journey and sharing the stage with such talented individuals is a victory in itself.

The event at Salon International was not just about showcasing products and trends; it was a celebration of the artistry and creativity that defines our industry. It was a reminder of the power of collaboration and the importance of supporting one another as we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of hairdressing. I left the event feeling inspired and invigorated, ready to take on new challenges and push the boundaries of my creativity.

As I reflect on this incredible experience, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities that lie ahead. The world of hairdressing is a canvas waiting to be painted, and I am excited to continue my journey, armed with the knowledge and inspiration gained from this remarkable event. Here’s to the future of hairdressing.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Jayne Lewis and the team at Hairdressing Journal for organising such an amazing event at Salon International. Your hard work and dedication truly made this experience unforgettable. Thank you for bringing together the best in the industry and for your commitment to excellence.
