ROMERÍA DE SAN BENITO ABAD

▶ Cada segundo domingo de julio, Tenerife disfruta de la Romería de San Benito Abad, en San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Declarada de Interés Turístico Nacional, en ella destaca el cortejo al santo realizado por siete mujeres vestidas con trajes típicos de cada isla.

▶ Every second Sunday in July, Tenerife enjoys the Pilgrimage of San Benito Abad in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. A Fiesta of National Tourism Interest, the pilgrimage is particularly notable for a procession of seven women wearing the typical dress of each island who accompany the saint.

VERANOS DEL TAORO

▶Teatro, danza, circo, zona ‘gastro’ y otras actividades confluirán en el Festival Veranos del Taoro. Apúntate la semana del 6 al 10 de agosto para darte un salto al Parque Taoro (Puerto de la Cruz) y disfrutar de personalidades como Isabella Rossellini o Héctor Alterio.

▶ Theatre, dance, circus, a ‘gastro’ area and other activities will come together in the Veranos del Taoro Festival. Make a note of the week from the 6th to the 10th of August to go to the Taoro Park (Puerto de la Cruz) and enjoy personalities such as Isabella Rossellini or Héctor Alterio.

BAJADA DE LA VIRGEN DEL SOCORRO

▶ La romería más antigua de toda Canarias tiene lugar el 7 de septiembre. Se celebra en el municipio de Güímar y es tradición que miles de personas acompañen a la Virgen del Socorro desde el pueblo hasta la playa de El Socorro en un día con numerosos actos.

▶ This is the oldest pilgrimage in the Canary Islands and takes place on 7 September in Güímar. Thousands of people accompany the Virgin of El Socorro from the village to El Socorro Beach on a day packed with different events.

TEJINA SE LLENA DE CORAZONES

▶ Cada año, alrededor del 24 de agosto el municipio de Tejina se sumerge en una celebración que fusiona la devoción religiosa con la vitalidad festiva. La Fiesta de San Bartolomé, en honor al patrón de este pueblo del norte de la Isla, es una ocasión esperada y venerada que se distingue por su rica tradición y su carácter comunitario.

En el núcleo de esta festividad se encuentran los emblemáticos Corazones de Tejina, cuya presencia marca la esencia misma de la celebración. Estas estructuras, compuestas por dos coronas unidas por un eje central, son mucho más que meros adornos; representan la esencia misma de la cultura y la historia del pueblo.

La historia de los Corazones de Tejina se remonta a generaciones atrás, surgiendo como una manifestación de la fe y gratitud hacia San Bartolomé. A lo largo de los años, esta tradición ha evolucionado y se ha enriquecido, pero su significado fundamental permanece intacto: honrar y celebrar la protección y las bendiciones del santo sobre la comunidad y sus cosechas.

Las ofrendas de los Corazones de Tejina incluyen flores, frutas y ramas, y esta práctica de ofrecer dones a un santo es una tradición arraigada en la cultura canaria.

Tejina fills with hearts

▶ Each year around 24 August, Tejina enjoys a festival that blends religious devotion with a celebratory spirit. The Festival of San Bartolomé pays tribute to the patron saint of this village in the north of Tenerife, and is an eagerly awaited occasion that is notable for its long tradition and sense of community.

The emblematic Hearts of Tejina are at the core of the festival and are the essence of the celebrations. These heart-shaped structures consist of two crowns joined by a central axis, and are much more than just decorations, representing the village’s culture and history.

The story behind the Hearts of Tejina can be traced back for generations, and they were originally created as an expression of faith and gratitude to San Bartolomé. The tradition has evolved and blossomed over the years, but its essential meaning remains the same: honouring and celebrating the saint who protects and blesses the community and its harvests.

Offerings that feature in the Tejina Hearts include flowers, fruit, and branches, and this practice of giving gifts to a saint is deeply rooted in Canary Islands’ culture.

La herencia marinera que existe en Tenerife, en concreto en sus zonas costeras, hace que cada 16 de julio numerosas embarcaciones salgan a rendirle homenaje a la Virgen del Carmen.

Entre los distintos municipios que organizan estas celebraciones, podemos destacar dos: Puerto de la Cruz y Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

PUERTO DE LA CRUZ ▶ Tradicionalmente, la ciudad portuense lleva a cabo esta celebración el martes anterior al 16 de julio. Durante este día, miles de personas se reúnen en el muelle pesquero para ver a la Virgen del Carmen y San Telmo, que es trasladada por los pescadores hasta uno de los barcos para iniciar la procesión marítima.

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE ▶ Considerada fiesta oficial en el municipio, la embarcación de la Virgen del Carmen lleva celebrándose desde 1919. Tras una misa en su honor en la iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, inicia la procesión que la lleva hasta el puerto, donde embarca y es seguida por docenas de embarcaciones al son del grito “¡Viva la Virgen del Carmen!”.

PUERTO DE LA CRUZ ▶ This port city traditionally holds its celebrations on the Tuesday before 16 July, when thousands of people gather on the fishing dock to see the Virgin of Carmel and St Elmo. The images are carried by fishermen to a boat and then set off on their maritime procession.

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE ▶ This is the municipality’s official festival and the procession of the Virgin of Carmel by boat has been celebrated here since 1919. After a mass held in her honour at the church of Our Lady of the Conception, a procession takes the Virgin down to the port where she sets off across the water, followed by dozens of boats, to the cries of “Long live the Virgin of Carmel!”.

▶ Candelaria es conocida como el centro espiritual de Tenerife debido a su famosa Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, patrona de las Islas Canarias. Este santuario, ubicado frente al océano Atlántico, es un lugar de peregrinación y devoción, y alberga la imagen de la Virgen de Candelaria.

▶ Candelaria is famous for being the spiritual heart of Tenerife thanks to the celebrated Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands. The church is set next to the Atlantic Ocean and is a place of pilgrimage and worship, and is also home to the statue of the Virgin of Candelaria.

FIESTAS DE LA VIRGEN DE CANDELARIA

▶ Todo comienza con la caminata que tiene lugar el 14 de agosto, víspera del Día de la Virgen de Candelaria, y reúne a miles de personas de todas las edades y procedencias. Los peregrinos caminan varios kilómetros desde diferentes puntos de la Isla hasta llegar a la plaza de la basílica, donde se encuentra la imagen de la virgen.

El ambiente festivo y religioso impregna todo el recorrido. Durante la caminata, los peregrinos llevan consigo velas y flores, entonando cánticos y rezos en honor a la virgen. Es común ver grupos de amigos, familias e incluso personas disfrazadas, lo que convierte el día en una jornada inolvidable.

Una vez que los peregrinos llegan a la Basílica de Candelaria, se celebra una misa solemne en honor a la Virgen de Candelaria. Así, la imagen de la virgen es venerada y se realizan ofrendas de flores y velas. Después de la ceremonia religiosa, se lleva a cabo una serie de actividades culturales y festivas, como conciertos, bailes tradicionales y fuegos artificiales. Todo esto ocurre la noche del 14 al 15 de agosto.

El siguiente día, el 15, se celebra la romería. Las calles se llenan de trajes de magos y fajines que acuden a la plaza para disfrutar de una fiesta que ya se considera de interés nacional.

FESTIVAL OF THE VIRGIN OF CANDELARIA

▶ The festivities begin with a pilgrimage on 14 August, the evening before the Day of the Virgin of Candelaria, and thousands of people of all ages join in from across the island. Pilgrims walk for several kilometres from different points across Tenerife to the church square and the statue of the virgin.

The journey has a celebratory and religious atmosphere, and as they walk, pilgrims carry candles and flowers, sing hymns, and pray to the Virgin. You often see groups of friends, families, and even people in costume, making it an unforgettable day.

Once the pilgrims reach the church of La Candelaria, a solemn mass is held in honour of the Virgin of Candelaria. Pilgrims pray to the statue of the Virgin and make offerings of flowers and candles. After the religious ceremony, people enjoy a series of fun and cultural activities such as concerts, traditional dances, and fireworks, which all take place during the night of 14 August.

The romería is held the following day, on the 15th. The streets fill with people in traditional dress and people flock to the square to enjoy the festival, an event of national cultural interest in Spain.

AVENTURA BACHATA EN ESTADO PURO

Bachata in its purest form

El emblemático grupo de la bachata contemporánea vuelve a reunirse en el tour Cerrando Ciclos. Desde su formación en 1994, Aventura ha sido un referente del género por canciones como Obsesión, La Boda o Un beso.

Sin embargo, después de que sus componentes iniciaran caminos por separado en 2011, han sido pocas las ocasiones en las que hemos podido disfrutar del conjunto. Una auténtica lástima, ya que juntos lograron un sold out en el Madison Square Garden y nominaciones a los premios más prestigiosos, como los Latin Grammy Awards.

El próximo 13 de septiembre, Romeo Santos, conocido como el Rey de la Bachata, volverá a unirse a Henry, Lenny y Max Santos para trasladarnos a antiguos tiempos y hacernos vibrar al son de sus grandes éxitos en el puerto de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

▶ Tenerife es moda y así lo ha demostrado este evento, que se ha celebrado entre el 6 y el 9 de junio en el Recinto Ferial de Santa Cruz y ha contado con la participación de casi 200 diseñadores y empresas.

Entre los diferentes espacios, sin duda el más relevante fue el de la Caja Negra, cuya pasarela acogió los desfiles de casi 40 marcas y diseñadores durante los cuatro días de evento. Entre ellas, podemos destacar a Marco&María, que regresó a la feria tras varios años sin desfilar; o a los diseñadores sevillanos José Juan Hurtado y José Galvañ, que trajeron el arte y color de Andalucía con un desfile de moda flamenca.

Por otro lado, la Zona Urban acogió distintos shootings, fashion talk, música en directo y desfiles de marcas de street wear, mientras que el espacio Peluquería y Estética exhibió cambios de looks en vivo, concursos de peluquería o batallas de uñas decorativas, entre otros.

▶ Tenerife means fashion and this event, held between 6 and 9 June at the Recinto Ferial de Santa Cruz, certainly proved it with the participation of almost 200 designers and companies.

The Caja Negra [Black Box] was the most important space at the fair and around 40 brands and designers held their shows on its catwalk during the four-day event. Highlights included Marco&María, who returned to the fair after an absence of several years, and Sevillian designers José Juan Hurtado and José Galvan, who brought the art of Andalusia to Tenerife with their flamenco fashion show.

Meanwhile, the Urban Zone hosted various fashion shoots and talks, live music, and fashion parades by street wear brands, while the Hairdressing and Beauty space exhibited live changes of look and nail art battles, among other activities.

XIII CONCURSO DE JÓVENES DISEÑADORES 2024

▶ Un total de 65 aspirantes, procedentes de diversas partes del mundo, se presentaron a este certamen. Entre ellos, siete fueron los finalistas que llegaron a la final que tuvo lugar en esta feria de la moda.

Tras un desfile en el que cada uno de los candidatos expuso 10 de sus diseños en la gran pasarela de la Caja Negra, el jurado otorgó el primer premio a David Pérez, conocido como David Moss. Proveniente de Guadalajara, su colección ‘Blos-

som’ mostró una propuesta femenina en la que el volumen, los volantes, la extravagancia y los colores pastel crearon una sinergia exquisita.

El segundo premio galardonó a la obra de Diego Barroso, cuyo nombre artístico es Filst, con su colección ‘Glorius’; mientras que el diseñador Alejandro Niño, conocido como M0m7, logró el premio a la colección más comercial con su propuesta ‘Coffee’.

13TH YOUNG DESIGNER COMPETITION 2024

▶ 65 hopefuls from around the world took part in this contest. Seven finalists reached the last stage of the competition, which was held at Tenerife’s fashion fair.

Each contestant put on a show with 10 of their designs on the main Caja Negra catwalk, and the jury awarded first prize to David Pérez, known as David Moss. Born in Guadalajara, his ‘Blossom’ collection featured feminine designs where

volume, ruffles, extravagance, and pastel colours were combined to spectacular effect.

Second prize went to Diego Barroso, whose artistic name is Filst, for his ‘Glorius’ collection, while designer Alejandro Niño, known as M0m7, won the award for the most commercial collection for his work ‘Coffee’.

▶ Entre los numerosos desfiles que tuvieron lugar dentro de la Caja Negra, debemos destacar el espacio dedicado a la moda ecológica. Durante este pase, el público pudo disfrutar de los diseños confeccionados por los alumnos participantes en las ediciones de la Semana de la Moda Sostenible Slow Fashion.

Junto a estas prendas desfilaron las colecciones de dos marcas artesanales tinerfeñas. Por un lado, Nathalie Leturcq presentó ‘Caprichos de color’, una propuesta de accesorios y prendas femeninas teñidas con tintes naturales. Por su parte, Amanita expuso su colección ‘Luz’, con el kimono como pieza estrella.

▶ Numerous eye-catching parades were held in the Caja Negra space, but special mention should be made of the ecological fashion event. During this show, the public enjoyed designs created by students who had taken part in Slow Fashion Sustainable Fashion Week.

Collections by two artisan brands from Tenerife were also shown alongside these parades. First, Nathalie Leturcq presented ‘Colourful Whims’, a collection of women’s accessories and clothing dyed with natural dyes. In turn, Amanita exhibited her ‘Luz’ collection and her stunning kimono turned everyone’s heads.

HOMENAJE A LA MEMORIA DE FRANKO PELUQUERO

Tribute to Franko Peluquero

▶ De forma paralela a la moda, la peluquería y la estética han tenido su propio espacio en un evento que ha llevado el nombre de Franko Peluquero en memoria de uno de los grandes profesionales de la peluquería en Canarias, fallecido recientemente.

Pasarelas, espectáculos en vivo o batallas son algunas de las actividades que los visitantes han podido disfrutar. Sin embargo, no cabe duda de que la que más ha llamado la atención ha sido el grafiti en honor a Franko. Durante los tres primeros días de evento, el artista Erik Air ha trabajado en este mural que finalmente ha sido entregado a la familia del estilista en un acto conmemorativo.

▶ Hairdressing and Beauty had their own space alongside the fashion shows, and this area was named after Franko Peluquero in honour of one of the Canary Island’s greatest hairdressing professionals, who recently passed away.

Parades, live shows, and ‘battles’ were just some of the activities that visitors to this space could enjoy, but its most striking attraction was the graffiti that paid tribute to Franko. Artist Erik Air worked on the mural during the first three days of the event and, at the end, it was presented to the stylist’s family in a commemorative ceremony.

▶ Llamado así por ser el sitio en el que los lugareños remojaban los altramuces, conocidos en Tenerife como chochos, para quitarles su característico sabor amargo. Hoy se ha convertido en una piscina natural totalmente adaptada para facilitar su acceso. Cuenta con barandilla, dispone de baños y además tiene espacio para aparcar con comodidad.

▶ This place was given its name because locals used to soak lupin beans, called ‘chochos’ in Tenerife, in the water here to remove their typically bitter flavour. Today it’s a natural pool that has been fully adapted for visitors with a handrail, toilets, and even plenty of parking spaces.

▶ En el Valle de Güímar, entre El Puertito y El Socorro, encontramos una de las mejores muestras del vulcanismo tinerfeño, el Malpaís de Güímar. Este singular paraje, dominado por el negro de la roca volcánica y el azul del mar, se puede recorrer por un sendero señalizado muy fácil de seguir y asequible para todos.

Lo ideal es elegir un día en el que no haya mucho calor, pues la insolación es muy alta. Los seis kilómetros de distancia de este sendero serpentean a través de coladas de lava, tubos volcánicos e, incluso, alguna cueva. En este sentido, podemos aparcar muy cerca del inicio y terminar en el mismo punto desde el que empezamos, el Puertito de Güímar. Caminando tranquilamente y parando a hacer fotos desde los miradores que nos encontremos, se puede completar en unas tres horas.

Pese a que hay muy poco desnivel, arrancamos con una ligera subida que se mantendrá hasta llegar a las faldas de Montaña Grande. Este cono volcánico de 276 metros de altitud preside toda la zona. De hecho, la lava que emanó de sus fisuras hace menos de 10000 años dio origen a este lugar, declarado Espacio Natural Protegido en 1987.

Desde allí arriba gozaremos de una bonita vista panorámica. Entonces, descendemos hacia el mar y regresamos por un sendero paralelo a la costa. Con continuos ascensos y descensos a través de coladas que chocaban junto al mar, llegamos hasta unas antiguas salinas abandonadas. Antes de terminar, encontramos una pequeña playa con arena dorada, lugar ideal para darnos un baño.

Para rematar, un plato de camarones o algo de pescado en cualquiera de las terrazas que miran al mar en El Puertito se convertirá en el final perfecto.

▶ In the Güímar Valley, between El Puertito and El Socorro, we can find one of the best examples of volcanic activity in Tenerife, the Malpaís de Güímar. This unique place, dominated by the black of the volcanic rock and the blue of the sea, can be explored along a signposted path that is easy to follow and accessible to everyone.

It is best to choose a day when it is not too hot, as sun exposure can be very high there. The six kilometres of this trail wind through lava flows, volcanic tubes and even some caves. You can park very close to the start and finish at the same point from which you began, Puertito de Güímar. If you walk at a leisurely pace and stop to take

photos from the viewpoints you come across, it will take around three hours to complete.

Although it is not very steep, it starts with a slight ascent that will continue until you reach the slopes of Montaña Grande. This 276-metre tall volcanic cone presides over the whole area. In fact, the lava that spewed from its fissures less than 10,000 years ago gave rise to this place, which was declared a Protected Natural Area in 1987.

From up there you will enjoy a stunning panoramic

view. You will then descend towards the sea and return along a path that runs alongside the coast. With continuous ascents and descents through lava flows that collided with the sea, you will come to some old abandoned salt mines. Before finishing up, there is a small beach with golden sand, an ideal place for a swim.

To round off the experience, a plate of shrimps or some fish on any of the terraces overlooking the sea at El Puertito will make for the perfect ending.

El carnaval nació en 1966 como una respuesta a las tensiones raciales y como una celebración de la diversidad cultural. Todo se remonta a cuando se abolió la esclavitud de la antigua colonia inglesa de Trinidad y Tobago, momento en el que salieron a celebrarlo con música, bailes y disfraces con los que parodiaban las costumbres de los europeos. Hoy en día, reúne a más de un millón de personas y es una auténtica fiesta de ritmos caribeños, disfraces extravagantes y energía contagiosa.

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

▶ As carnival lovers we can't ignore some of the most important carnivals in the world, specifically this carnival is considered the largest in Europe. Held at the end of August, it is one of the largest and most vibrant street carnivals in the world, and celebrates Caribbean culture with colourful parades, live music, and a festive atmosphere that spreads throughout the neighbourhood.

The carnival was born in 1966 as a response to racial tensions and as a celebration of cultural diversity. It dates back to the abolition of slavery in the former British colony of Trinidad and Tobago, when people came out to celebrate with music, dancing and costumes that parodied European customs. Today, it brings together more than a million people and is a veritable fiesta of Caribbean rhythms, flamboyant costumes and infectious energy.

STEEL BANDS

▶ Las steel bands tienen sus raíces en Trinidad y Tobago, donde surgieron en la década de 1930. Los tambores de acero, conocidos como steel pans o steel drums, fueron creados a partir de barriles de petróleo reciclados, golpeados y afinados para producir diferentes tonos.
