CONEXIÓN RELÁMPAGO ¿Creías que ya navegabas a alta velocidad con tu móvil 4G? ¡No te queda nada! La tecnología 5G ya está tocando a la puerta y promete ser la verdadera revolución en la conectividad. Ya estuvo muy presente en el Mobile World Congress de este año, uno de los mayores eventos tecnológicos del mundo, celebrado en Barcelona. Como su propio nombre indica, el 5G es la quinta generación en las redes de telefonía móvil. Desde que apareció el 3G, la velocidad de conexión no ha dejado de mejorar y con el 5G ésta llegará hasta límites insospechados. ¿Te imaginas descargar una película en un segundo? Será posible dentro de muy poco, pues con esta tecnología se prevé poder bajar hasta 10 gigas en ese ínfimo período de tiempo. De hecho, hablamos de una velocidad de transferencia de datos, como mínimo, 20 veces superior a la del 4G. Lo cierto es que la gran característica de la tecnología 5G es la reducción de la latencia en la transmisión de datos. Esto implica una velocidad de respuesta mayor, de tal forma que la información se recibe antes. En el Mobile World Congress los asistentes pudieron comprobar este hecho in situ, con la retransmisión de una operación quirúrgica del Hospital Clinic de Barcelona comandada por el doctor Antonio de Lacy, que se encontraba en
el evento tecnológico. De este modo, con la red 5G el doctor teleasistía al equipo con una velocidad de respuesta de la conexión formidable, pues el lapso de tiempo era únicamente de 0,01 segundos. Esta nueva era en las redes de telefonía móvil abre las puertas a un sinfín de posibilidades gracias a la baja latencia. Su inmediata velocidad de respuesta propiciará el asentamiento definitivo del ‘Internet de las cosas’, concepto que hace referencia a un mundo en el que prácticamente cualquier dispositivo se conecta a la red. Así, el 5G impulsará el control remoto de robots, drones y toda clase de vehículos. También será fundamental para poder gestionar casas inteligentes y, en última instancia, se formarán ciudades inteligentes que funcionarán alrededor de esta tecnología. Además, este futuro, que parece más propio de la ciencia ficción, ya ha comenzado a ser real: Corea del Sur ya comercializa redes 5G. Pero la gran pregunta es: ¿cuándo se expandirá el uso de esta tecnología? La consultora Deloitte predice que hasta 25 operadores ofrecerán el servicio 5G a lo largo de este 2019, al menos en algunos territorios. Otros 26 más lo harán en 2020, año en el que Vodafone quiere lanzarlo en España. ¡La que se viene!
LIGHTNING CONNECTION If you thought you were already browsing at pretty high speeds with your 4G mobile, think again! 5G technology has now arrived knocking at our door and promises to bring with it a genuine revolution when it comes to connectivity. It was the star of the show at this year's Mobile World Congress, one of the largest technological events in the world, held in Barcelona. As its name suggests, 5G is the fifth generation of mobile phone networks. Ever since 3G first appeared, connection speed has been continuously improving and, with 5G, will now reach speeds that were simply unimaginable. Can you imagine downloading a film in a single second? Soon you’ll be able to, because this new technology is expected to be capable of downloading up to 10 GB in that miniscule amount of time. We are, in fact, talking about data transfer speeds that are, at least, 20 times faster than 4G. The star feature of 5G technology is the reduction of latency in data transmission. This means a quicker reaction speed, so information is received a lot sooner. At the Mobile World Congress, attendees were able to verify this fact in situ, with the retransmission of a surgical operation at the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, which was
led by Dr Antonio de Lacy, who was at the technological event. Using the 5G network, the doctor was able to video assist his medical team thanks to an incredible connection speed - the time lapse was just 0.01 seconds. This new era in mobile networks opens the door to endless possibilities thanks to its low latency. Its immediate response time will beat the final hurdle in the creation of what’s referred to as the 'Internet of things', a concept that refers to a world in which practically any device is hooked up to the network. This 5G connection will boost the remote control of robots, drones and other types of vehicles and will also play a key role in being able to manage smart homes. Eventually, we will see the creation of entire smart cities that will function around this technology. This vision of the future, which seems like something taken straight out of a science fiction film, has already begun: South Korea is now marketing 5G networks. But the big question is, when will the use of this technology expand? The consultancy firm Deloitte predicts that up to 25 operators will offer a 5G service in 2019, at least in some countries. Another 26 will do the same next year, including Vodafone in Spain. Watch this space!

A green dream that sails at sea. These are the words we could use to describe HOP, a luxury yacht that belongs to Iddes Yachts, a company based in Palma de Mallorca. This beautiful yacht has it all: a huge size, 120 metres of length, a stunning design and an electrical propulsion that makes it environment-friendly.
Lo que más impresiona cuando echamos un ojo a esta embarcación es su estructura panorámica de vidrio y sus líneas curvas, confiriéndole una sofisticación aún mayor. Esta joya de la navegación ha entrado entre los finalistas para ganar los prestigiosos premios The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2019 en la categoría de yates con dimensiones superiores a los 40 metros. El 24 de mayo sabremos si se alza con el galardón, en una ceremonia que tendrá lugar en Venecia. Su diseñador es Iván Salas, un arquitecto naval que lleva prácticamente toda su vida trabajando en la construcción y reparación de estas embarcaciones.
This jewel of the sea has been shortlisted for the prestigious International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2019 in the category of yachts over 40 metres. We’ll have to wait until the 24th of May, during a ceremony in Venice, to find out if they are the winners. The designer, Iván Salas, is a naval architect who has spent practically his whole life building and repairing boats.
Habrá que esperar unos días para saber si este yate de Mallorca gana el premio, pero, sea cual sea el resultado, la criatura de Iddes Yachts ya nos ha conquistado.

Apostar por las energías renovables ya no es una opción, sino una obligación. Y en un país como China, el más poblado que existe, con más razón. Los asiáticos son conscientes de ello y celebramos encontrarnos con instalaciones como la que hay en la provincia de Anhui. Se trata de la mayor planta flotante de energía solar del mundo, con capacidad para abastecer nada menos que a 28.000 personas.
Renewable energy is no longer an option, it ’s a must! Especially in China, the most populated country in the world. Asians are aware of this fact and we’re happy to see that they’re developing facilities like the one in Anhui, the world's largest f loating solar power plant, which can hold up to 28,000 people.
Situada en una enorme laguna de la ciudad de Huainan, esta estructura es capaz de generar 40 megavatios por día. El proyecto es un esfuerzo de la Administración Nacional de Energía en China para reducir la dependencia del país del carbón. Lo cierto es que la vista desde el aire es simplemente espectacular, con miles de paneles solares ocupando el agua. Lo más curioso es que, irónicamente, la laguna en la que flota era una antigua mina de carbón que quedó inundada a causa de la lluvia.
The structure is located on a large lake in Huainan and it’s capable of generating 40 megawatts per day. This project was an attempt by the National Energy Administration in China to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. The truth is that the view from above is breathtaking; there are thousands of solar panels floating in the water. Ironically, this lake lies over an old coal mine that was flooded with rainwater.
La empresa encargada de construir esta planta fue Sungrow Power Supply Co, que ya ha llevado a cabo otros ambiciosos proyectos con energías renovables en el estado. No es de extrañar que China sea la potencia mundial líder en la inversión en energías limpias y que en 2018 estas supusieran el 38,3% de su capacidad energética. Esperemos que el resto de países sigan el ejemplo del gigante asiático.
The company in charge of building this plant was Sungrow Power Supply Co, that has also led other ambitious renewable energy projects in the country. It’s no surprise that China is the world leader in the investment of renewable energy and that in 2018 this type of energy accounted for 38.3% of its total energy capacity. Let’s just hope that other countries follow China’s example.

ubo un tiempo en el que este irlandés (nació en Castleknock, Dublín, el 31 de mayo de 1976) parecía condenado a ser solo otro de esos chicos malos de Hollywood. Tras unos prometedores comienzos, se hablaba más de Colin Farrell por sus escándalos y por sus numerosas conquistas femeninas que por sus películas. Pero en los últimos años, el díscolo actor ha sabido enderezar su carrera trabajando con prestigiosos directores del cine independiente. Pocos saben que antes de ser conocido hizo una prueba –sin éxitopara entrar a formar parte del grupo pop Boyzone o que decidió ser actor después de emocionarse hasta las lágrimas viendo E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Hollywood lo descubrió gracias a Joel Schumacher, que lo dirigió en Tigerland (2000) y en Phone Booth (2002). A partir de ahí compaginó grandes producciones como Minority Report (2002 y a las órdenes de Steven Spielberg), S.W.A.T. (2003), The Recruit (2003), Daredevil (2003) o Miami Vice (2006), con cine independiente como Intermission (2002), A Home at the End of the World (2004), The New World (2005, de Terrence Malick) y Cassandra's Dream (2007, de Woody Allen). Fue Oliver Stone quien lo convirtió en una estrella con Alexander (2004), un biopic sobre Alejandro Magno, pero fue su interpretación en In Bruges (2008) la que lo consagró como actor de talento al ganar el Globo de Oro. “Con aquellos primeros éxitos me sentí como un niño al que le abren la tienda de golosinas y le dejan comer todo lo que quiera. En cuanto quería algo, lo tenía”, asegura. Sus siguientes trabajos (Ondine, Fright Night, Total Recall, la segunda temporada de la serie True detective…) no convencieron ni a la crítica ni al público y parecía que Colin iba a quedar relegado a papeles secundarios en grandes producciones (Saving Mr. Banks, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). Pero en 2015 estrenó la película que lo devolvería a la cima: The Lobster, de Yorgos
Lanthimos. En el filme da vida a un hombre que se registra en un hotel al que las personas solteras son enviadas con el objetivo de encontrar pareja. Las que no lo logran son convertidas en animales como castigo. Por su interpretación recibió una candidatura al Globo de Oro y otra a los premios del cine europeo. “Yorgos Lanthimos nunca compartió conmigo cual era el mensaje o el objetivo de la película. Pensó que así no íbamos a limitarnos. Está sujeta a más interpretaciones que todo lo que había hecho antes. Para encarnar a mi personaje gravité alrededor de su soledad. Creo que vive dolorosamente en el presente. Solo define el valor de su propia existencia a través de lo que los otros le dicen que haga”. Con el realizador griego volvió a trabajar en la igualmente brillante -además de inquietante- The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), en la que tiene como compañera de reparto a Nicole Kidman, actriz con la que repetiría en The Beguiled, a las órdenes de Sofia Coppola. El pasado año estrenó Widows, de Steve McQueen, y hace solo unas semanas la versión que de Dumbo ha dirigido Tim Burton. “La lucha de Dumbo es una lucha que tiene mucha gente. Queremos ser especiales, pero también queremos ser uno más de la pandilla. Es ese roce constante entre lo que entendemos que es importante y lo que puede que sea realmente importante. Es agradable sentir que perteneces a algún lugar. Pero también es muy importante ser capaz de aceptarte a ti mismo, independientemente del valor que te den o no los demás”. Entre sus proyectos está un filme dirigido por Guy Ritchie y todos esperamos que se confirme su participación en War Pigs, donde trabajaría junto a Mel Gibson y que podría rodarse en Tenerife. Habrá que esperar al próximo mes de septiembre para saber si podremos encontrarnos a Colin paseando por las calles de Santa Cruz.

BAD BOY REDEEMS HIMSELF
T
here once was a time when it seemed the fate of this Irish man (he was born in Castleknock, Dublin, on May 31st 1976) was to become just another Hollywood bad boy. After a promising start, Colin Farrell was far better known for his scandals and numerous female conquests than for his films. But in recent years, the cheeky actor has managed to straighten out his career by working with prestigious directors in independent films. Not many people know that, before he was famous, Colin auditioned –unsuccessfully– to form part of the pop group Boyzone, nor that he decided to become an actor after being moved to tears watching E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Hollywood discovered him thanks to Joel Schumacher, who directed him in Tigerland (2000) and Phone Booth (2002). Following that, he appeared in several blockbusters such as Minority Report (2002, on Steven Spielberg’s orders), S.W.A.T. (2003), The Recruit (2003), Daredevil (2003) and Miami Vice (2006) as well as independent films like Intermission (2002), A Home at the End of the World (2004), The New World (2005, by Terrence Malick) and Cassandra's Dream (2007, by Woody Allen). It was Oliver Stone who really made him a star in Alexander (2004), a biopic about Alexander the Great, however it was his performance in (2008) that earned him both a Golden Globe and a solid reputation as a talented actor. “With those first successes I felt like a boy who’d had the doors opened to a sweet shop and was allowed to eat everything he wants. Whatever I wanted, I had,” he said. His following films (Ondine, Fright Night, Total Recall) and the second season of the True Detective series, didn’t convince the critics or the general public and it looked as though Colin was going to stay relegated to secondary roles in large-scale productions (Saving Mr. Banks, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). But 2015 saw the release of a film that would put him right back on top: The Lobster, by Yorgos Lanthimos. In it, he plays a man who checks himself into a hotel where single people are sent with the aim of finding a partner. Those who don’t manage it are turned into animals as a punishment. His performance earned him nominations for both the Golden Globes and the European Film Awards. “Yorgos Lanthimos never told me what the message or the goal of the film were. He thought that, this way, we wouldn’t limit ourselves. It was open to more interpretation than anything I’d done before. To get into my character, I centred on his loneliness. I believe that he lives painfully in the present. The only way he defines the value of his existence is through what others tell him to do.” He worked with the Greek director again in the equally brilliant – and also disturbing- The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), with Nicole Kidman as his co-star, an actress with whom he’d partner up again in The Beguiled, directed by Sofia Coppola. Last year, he starred in Steve McQueen’s Widows and just a few weeks ago his latest film, Tim Burton’s Dumbo, hit the cinemas. “Dumbo’s struggle is one many people have. We want to be special, but we also want to be one of the gang. It’s that constant struggle between what we think is important and what perhaps really is important. It is nice to feel that you belong somewhere. El constructivismo ruso fue un movimiento artístico muy influyente que surgió en la Unión Soviética en el siglo XX, y evolucionó cuando los bolcheviques llegaron al poder en la Revolución de octubre de 1917. A través de este movimiento se expresaron en el ámbito del arte, el diseño y la arquitectura, muchos de los artistas soviéticos más avanzados que apoyaban los objetivos de la revolución. Antes de la primera guerra mundial, la vanguardia rusa, se inspiró en el cubismo y el futurismo, pero luego en la revolución de 1917, buscó nuevas formas de expresión relacionada con la aspiración soviética de suplantar el sistema capitalista con esquemas más democráticos de producción y distribución de los bienes. Con este enfoque artistas como Vladimir Tatlin, Kasinut Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko, El Lissitzky y Wassily Kandínsky, empezaron a promover una estética y un estilo de diseño asociado a la producción industrial. Muchas de sus obras gráficas y arquitectónicas se han convertido en iconos y referentes visuales de este movimiento. ARTE UTILITARIO El constructivismo ruso se consideraba más una filosofía que solo un estilo. Esta filosofía reflejaba una creencia en el arte para el cambio social y no como una expresión personal. CONSTRUCTIVISM Russian constructivism was a very influential artistic movement that originated in Russia in the twentieth century and evolved when the Bolsheviks came to power in the October Revolution of 1917. Several of the most advanced Russian artists who supported the revolution were able to express themselves in art, design and architecture through this movement. Before World War I, the Russian avant-garde movement was influenced by Cubism and Futurism, but after the 1917 revolution, it sought new forms of expression related to the Soviet aspiration of replacing the capitalist system with a more democratic way of producing and distributing goods. With this approach, artist like Vladimir Tatlin, Kasinut Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko, El Lissitzky and Wassily Kandínsky, started promoting an aesthetic and a style associated to industrial production. Many graphic designs and architectonic works have become icons and visual examples of this movement. UTILITARY ART Russian constructivism wasn’t just considered a style, but also a way of thinking. This philosophy shared a belief in art for social change, and not just as a personal expression. Its supporters defended that art should be functional, not just decorative and expressive. These ideas left a mark on the revolutionary movement. Russian constructivism entailed a visual identity for Soviet communism and its main goal was to share the arts with the people and save it from the elites. Austerity, conciseness, geometric shapes and a monolithic appearance are adjectives we can use to describe this avant-garde style. During the International Exhibition held in Paris in 1925, Russia literally surprised western experts with its original architectonic ideas. It was at that point that terms such as “Soviet avant-garde” and “constructivism” were used for the first time.

CONSTRUCTIVIST ARCHITECTURE Constructivist architecture was a form of modern architecture that flourished at the beginning of the twentieth century. This movement used design to promote socialist ideology, as well as the immensity in size and geometry to create bold, epic, and conceptually emblematic buildings and structures. This way, constructivist architecture was able to combine conceptual design and geometric aesthetics with the communist way of life and a social goal in common. Constructivist architecture was a school of thought that challenged the limits and aesthetics of traditional design and the ideas and notions of how to live. Although many buildings have deteriorated, they are still a symbol of an era full of daring designs, radical ideas, monumental sizes and unprecedented changes.

A HONG KONG ENTRE PECES Tras nueve años de continuos problemas, hace unos meses al fin vio la luz el puente sobre el mar más largo del mundo. Se ha construido, cómo no, en China y conecta Hong Kong con Macao y la ciudad de Zhuhai. Su inauguración es el final de un tortuoso proyecto plagado de retrasos y adversidades a causa de la seguridad de la obra.
After nine years encountering several problems, the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge was finally completed several months ago. It was built in China (what a surprise!) and it links Hong Kong to Macau and the city of Zhuhai. The opening ceremony marked the end of a tortuous project riddled with delays and adversities due to security concerns.
Posee una longitud de 55 kilómetros, una distancia colosal. Para hacernos una idea, es 20 veces más largo que el puente Golden Gate de San Francisco. Igual de espectacular es su coste, que ha ascendido hasta los 20.000 millones de dólares, lo que ha generado polémicas que cuestionaban la necesidad de un proyecto de esta magnitud. Pero esto no es todo: lo más asombroso es que, para no entorpecer el intenso tráfico marítimo de la zona, un tramo central de 6,7 kilómetros transcurre bajo el mar. Este túnel marino está conectado a dos islas artificiales, a las cuales llega el puente. Además, para su construcción se requirieron nada menos que 400.000 toneladas de acero.
The bridge spans the amazing distance of 55 kilometres. To give you an idea, it’s 20 times longer than the San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Equally spectacular is how much it cost, in total over 20 billion dollars. This has been widely criticized, as many have questioned the need for such a large project. But that’s not all! The most amazing fact is that, to allow ships to continue passing through the estuary, the bridge plunges underwater for 6.7km midway, via two artificial islands. In addition, a total of 400,000 tonnes of steel were used for its construction.

Aunque a la hora de elegir sus estudios se decantó por otra rama y es que se graduó en 1991 en Diseño Industrial y de Mobiliario. Eso sí, durante los dos años siguientes trabajó como asistente del diseñador Walter Van Beirendonck y colaboró tanto en la decoración de sus showrooms como en sus colecciones. Además, esa época de su vida le sirvió para adentrarse en el mundillo de la moda y codearse con fotógrafos y estilistas como David Vandewal, Olivier Rizzo o Willy Vanderperre con los que actualmente sigue, de una forma u otra, muy vinculado.
The designer was born in Belgium on January 12, 1968 and always showed a clear interest for the art world. However, when the time came to choose his degree, he opted for a different creative branch, graduating in 1991 in Industrial and Furniture Design. But, for the next two years, he worked as an assistant to the designer Walter Van Beirendonck, helping with both the decoration of his showrooms and in designing his collections. That period of his life helped him set foot into the world of fashion, mingling with photographers and stylists like David Vandewal, Olivier Rizzo and Willy Vanderperre, all of whom he remains, in one way or another, closely linked with today.

Around 1993, Raf Simons decided to have a change of scene, moving to Antwerp, the city known as the “factory for successful designers”. There, he met the director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, who immediately recognised his talent and gave Raf the push he needed to create his own brand. His presented his first collection in Milan in 1995, which was aimed solely at a male audience.

If we had to highlight one of his subsequent years, it would, without doubt, be 2005. This was the year in which he presented his Raf by Raf Simons label, to rave reviews from critics; he launched his book Raf Simons: Redux, to celebrate his then 10-year career and was named creative director of the German fashion house Jil Sander. His popularity soared and the company regained the splendour it appeared to have lost.

He remained there until 2012, when Jil Sander herself decided to take back the reins. Shortly afterwards, Simons was appointed as Dior's new creative director. This was a challenge for him, given the brand’s classic style and nature. However, he knew how to put his stamp on it, updating the brand with a renewed and modern look. This was recognised with the award for Best International Designer by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (2014) and with the documentary film Dior and I. Nevertheless, a year later, the Belgian decided to leave Dior to “focus on his own brand and his personal interests”. By 2016, he’d already taken over the artistic direction, marketing strategies and the design of the entire global image of Calvin Klein.

Ya son 35 años los que avalan la trayectoria de este diseñador tinerfeño que con tan solo 17 años dio rienda suelta a su pasión y comenzó a coser de manera autodidacta. Después vendría la formación y perfección al lado de grandes maestros locales y nacionales, pero el nombre de Leo Martínez sonó por primera vez, y con mucha fuerza, una noche de 1987 cuando su diseño se hizo con el cetro de la Reina del Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. En la retina y en la mente de todos los tinerfeños se ha quedado grabada su obra Tajaraste, un icono dentro de las reinas del carnaval santacrucero. Es a partir de entonces cuando el nombre de Leo Martínez ha sonado en repetidas y numerosas ocasiones en las galas de la reina, consolidándose como el gran diseñador que es, y sellando su nombre en la escena carnavalera de la isla. Tras una colección de reinas y damas en su palmarés, Leo decide hace unos años dejar paso a los nuevos diseñadores y jóvenes promesas, y se aparta del diseño del Carnaval para dar un giro profesional a su carrera. Aunque lleva años formando parte del colectivo de Tenerife Moda, es el momento de adentrarse y consolidarse como diseñador de alta costura y fiesta. Se centra particularmente en la creación de vestuario de artes escénicas, como los musicales, óperas y obras de teatro, siendo sus manos las responsables de crear el atuendo de óperas y musicales celebrados en Tenerife, como Jesucristo Superstar, Rinaldo, Nabucco, The Fairy Queen o Evita. Esta última, una producción propia del Auditorio de Tenerife además tuvo representación en el Nuevo Teatro Alcalá, en Madrid, llevando los diseños de Leo Martínez a la escena madrileña. Su participación en las Semanas de la Moda de Tenerife ha generado mucha expectación. En la última edición ha presentado Diosas, una colección que recoge la gran labor que desarrolla alrededor del mundo de las artes escénicas y que nos traslada al ambiente de Hollywood con prendas que potencian la sensualidad femenina. Fiesta, novias, teatro o reinas del Carnaval, a Leo todo se le da bien.
DESIGNING FOR GODDESSES It’s been 35 years since this designer was a 17-year-old boy from Tenerife who decided to give free rein to his imagination and started teaching himself to sew. He then received classes and learned with local and national designers, but the first time that the name Leo Martínez started to be heard, by many people, was a night in 1987 when his design for the Carnival Queen of Santa Cruz, won. Everyone from Tenerife still remembers his design Tajaraste, an icon among Santa Cruz’s carnival queens. Since then, his name has come up over and over again during the queen’s gala, establishing himself as the great designer he is and linking his name to the island’s carnival scene. After designing dresses for queens and maids of honour, Leo decided that it’s time to give way to new designers and young promises, and has distanced himself from the Carnival to take a new turn in his career. Although he’s been a member of Tenerife
Moda for years, it’s time to go one step further and establish himself as a high fashion and formal party wear designer. His focus is currently on creating performing arts costume designs for musicals, operas and theatre, having done so for plays held in Tenerife like Jesus Christ Superstar, Rinaldo, Nabucco, The Fairy Queen or Evita. This last one, a production by Auditorio de Tenerife (Tenerife’s auditorium) was also represented in the Nuevo Teatro Alcalá theatre in Madrid, displaying Leo Martinez’s designs in Spain’s capital. His participation in Tenerife’s fashion week has generated lots of excitement. In the last edition he presented Diosas, a collection which gathers the work he has carried out in the performing arts world and takes us straight to Hollywood with garments that enhance female sensuality. Party and wedding dresses, theatre costumes or Carnival queens, Leo is good at everything.

Descubrí que yo también puedo ser multiorgásmico cuando Morrissey estrenó el primer single de California Son, un disco de versiones. La canción elegida, Wedding Bell Blues, que Laura Nyro compuso en 1966 y que popularizó The Fifth Dimension, es tan bonita que se me olvidó que en ella hace coros ese punk de boutique que lidera Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong. También se me olvidaron todas las excentricidades protagonizadas por el que fuera cantante de The Smiths: sus ataques a los políticos, a la monarquía, a los que comen carne, a la prensa británica o sus problemas con las discográficas.
Thanks to the first single of Morrissey’s California Son, a covers album, I discovered that I too can be multiorgasmic. The chosen song, Wedding Bell Blues, composed by Laura Nyro in 1966 and made popular by The Fifth Dimension, is so beautiful that I managed to forget that the backing vocals are sung by that boutique punk who leads Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong. I also forgot all the eccentricities of the former singer of The Smiths: his attacks to politicians and the Queen, to people who eat meat, the British press or even his problems with record labels.

La publicación del álbum no ha estado exenta de polémica. Ariel Engle -de Broken Social Scene y que interviene en la versión de Joni Mitchell- no conocía la ideología (cercana en algunos aspectos a la extrema derecha) de Morrissey cuando el productor Joe Chiccarelli le pidió que grabara los coros.
The release of the album hasn’t been free of controversy. Ariel Engle –of Broken Social Scene and who collaborated on Joni Mitchell’s track- was unaware of Morrissey’s political views (in some aspects, close to the far right) when the producer, Joe Chiccarelli asked her to do the backing vocals.
“Sus ideas políticas están completamente fuera de lugar. Crecí en torno al multiculturalismo y soy el producto del multiculturalismo y la inmigración. Me siento como si me la hubiesen pegado, pero es culpa mía", afirma la artista, enfadada y arrepentida de haber participado en California Son.

Greta se pierde las clases cada viernes para manifestarse frente el Parlamento sueco por la defensa del medioambiente. Lo hace portando una pancarta con un mensaje inequívoco: “Huelga escolar por el cambio climático”. De hecho, ha conseguido que miles de estudiantes de países de todo el mundo se sumen a su causa, inspirando el movimiento ‘Fridays for Future’. Este fenómeno tuvo su máxima expresión el viernes del 15 de marzo, fecha en la que se convocó una huelga estudiantil mundial que ha pasado a la historia.
Her crushing speech to the UN is, however, only the betterknown part of her tireless activism. Greta misses school every Friday to protest in front of the Swedish Parliament in defence of the environment. And she does it holding a sign with a message that couldn’t be clearer: "School strike for climate change". In fact, she’s managed to get thousands of students from countries all around the world to join her cause, inspiring the movement 'Fridays for Future'. This phenomenon reached new heights on Friday, March 15th, the date when a global student strike was celebrated that has now gone down in history.

Lo cierto es que Greta lo empezó todo, con el único objetivo de que la clase política ponga en marcha de una vez medidas drásticas a favor del medio ambiente. Ella sabe por qué hemos llegado a esta dramática realidad: “Nuestra civilización está siendo sacrificada por la oportunidad de que un número muy pequeño de personas continúe haciendo enormes cantidades de dinero”.
On that day in March, hundreds of thousands of young people from more than 1,600 cities in over 100 countries took to the streets. In Spain alone, the movement had more than 60 concentrations in 58 cities. There’s no doubt that this young activist is already a media icon. Her speech at the Conference on Climate Change went so viral that in January she was invited to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. She decided to travel to the congress by train, given that the planes emit such high levels of CO2, in a journey that took more than 30 hours. There, she managed once again to leave politicians present red faced, giving them a clear message: “I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic, to feel the fear that I feel every day. And then I want you to act.”

Greta’s activism is, in fact, worthy of even more merit when you consider that she suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, one of the developmental disorders that fall within the autistic spectrum. She maintains that it affects her in a positive way, because it increases her capacity for concentration, although it does cause her to tire more easily.

Asia knows only too well the scale of the world’s plastic crisis. One of the coolest new sustainable alternatives we’ve seen recently comes from Vietnam, where a young entrepreneur has released straws made of wild grass. Tran Minh Tien is the owner of Ong Hút Co a Vietnam-based company that makes two kinds of straws – fresh and dried – out of sedge grass, which grows wild along the Mekong Delta. PUEBLO DE LA REINA Tsaritsyno, es un conjunto de palacios y parques situado al suroeste de Moscú y con una historia de más de 250 años. Su nombre en ruso significa Pueblo de la Reina. En 1775 la hacienda propiedad de nobles rurales rusos fue adquirida por la emperatriz Catalina la Grande, que encargó al arquitecto Bazhenov, y posteriormente a Kazakov, la transformación en un único palacio imperial el cual nunca fue finalizado. Al principio del siglo XIX la residencia fue convertida en parque rural, y la mayoría de sus edificios adaptados a hoteles y restaurantes. Posteriormente con la revolución de 1917 algunas construcciones se transformaron en pisos comunitarios, casa cultural y el club Bolshevik. Tras la profunda restauración de los años 1986-2014 estas obras únicas de la arquitectura estilo pseudo-gótico del siglo XVIII fueron reconstruidas y hoy alberga el museo ruso de arte y artes aplicadas, aprovechando también sus salas para realizar conciertos de música clásica, jazz y otros eventos culturales.

Tsaritsyno, which has a history of over 250 years, is a palace and park reserve located in the southwest of Moscow. Its name in Russian means queen’s land. In 1775, the estate that was owned by rural Russian nobles was bought by the empress Catherine the Great who hired the architect Bazhenov, and later Kazakov, to transform it into an imperial palace which remained unfinished. At the beginning of the 19th century, the residence was turned into a rural park and most of the buildings were converted into hotels and restaurants. Later, with the Revolution in 1917, some of the buildings were transformed into communal flats, a cultural centre and the Bolshevik club. After years of restoration (1986-2014), the unique 18th century ensemble of neo gothic style was reconstructed and nowadays, it houses the Russian Museum of Applied and Decorative Arts. They also make use of the rooms to hold classical jazz concerts and other cultural events.

In 1867, in the heart of Moscow on the banks of the river opposite the Kremlin, a German national called Ferdinand Von Einema founded a chocolate factory that in time would become the supplier of the Russian Imperial Court. After the Revolution, the factory was nationalised and in the Soviet era it became known as "Red October". At the beginning of 2000, the holding was changed to United Confectionary. In the meantime, the architectural red-brick complex that is located on the small island of Bolotny Ostrov has become a unique architectural icon that houses clubs, restaurants, creative offices and art galleries. Nowadays, it is one of the coolest and must-visit places in the capital of Russia.

Era Yuri Gagarin, el astronauta que hizo historia. El 12 de abril de 1961 se convirtió en la primera persona del mundo en ir al espacio. De este modo, aquel día la URSS tomó la delantera en la carrera por la exploración del cosmos.
During the moment of maximum danger of the late Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States, Yuru Gagarin wasn’t even on planet Earth! This astronaut was busy making history on the 12th of April 1961, becoming the first person in the world to journey into outer space. On that day, the USSR became the first country in the world to explore the cosmos.
Gagarin era un piloto militar soviético hasta que fue elegido, de entre miles de candidatos, para incorporarse al programa espacial. Realizó la hazaña a bordo de la nave Vostok 1, tras años de vuelos de prueba del programa Sputnik. Así, el cohete despegó transportando una cápsula esférica en la que se encontraba el astronauta, desprendiéndose de ella cuando dejó atrás la atmósfera terrestre. En la cápsula, Gagarin completó una órbita alrededor del planeta en 108 minutos, para luego iniciar el descenso. Cuando bajó a 7.000 metros de altitud, el soviético salió de la esfera en paracaídas, aterrizando en la provincia de Sarátov.
Gagarin was a military pilot until he was chosen, among thousands of candidates, to enter the Soviet space programme. He completed his mission aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1, after years of test flights with the Sputnik programme. The rocket took off with Yuri Gagarin in a spherical capsule, detaching himself from it once he left Earth behind. In the capsule, the astronaut orbited the planet in 108 minutes, to then start descent. When he descended to 7,000 metres of altitude, the astronaut left the capsule in a parachute, landing in the province of Saratov.

Se cree que las primeras muñecas fueron realizadas en 1890 por el artesano Vasily Zvyozdochkin y pintadas a mano por el artista Sergey Malyutin, inspiradas en un conjunto de muñecas similares de porcelana traídas desde Japón, que representaba al sabio Fukurama.
Las primeras representaciones de este popular souvenir eran de campesinos, comerciantes y nobles. Con el tiempo, la forma de la propia muñeca ha ido evolucionando, pasando de un estilo primitivo a uno más estilizado. El set de matryoshkas más numeroso fue de 72 piezas y se hizo para el aniversario del cumpleaños de Lenin en 1970. Pero las famosas muñecas de madera no se han quedado detenidas en el tiempo, y se siguen fabricando en ciudades como Sergei Posad, Semionovo y Polkhovsky Maidan, dedicadas a la creación de estas pequeñas obras de arte.
Apenas 10 años después, en 1900 la matryoshka fue exhibida en la Exposición Universal de París, y la colorida muñeca fue reconocida como el mejor juguete tanto desde el punto de vista educativo como técnico, disfrutando de una gran popularidad entre el público y recibiendo una medalla de bronce. SÍMBOLO DE FERTILIDAD La palabra matryoshka proviene del nombre Matryona, que fue muy popular en el siglo XIX. El nombre significa "dama respetable" y "madre de familia". Para los rusos la Matryoshka es obviamente “Matryona”, la encarnación de la salud de la mujer, la fertilidad, una maravillosa disposición femenina y un símbolo de la familia. En poco tiempo, estas muñecas “anidadas”, una dentro de la otra, se convirtieron en un símbolo de patriotismo, además de un elemento clave en la artesanía rusa.
En la actualidad, las matryoshkas presentan muchos estilos para elegir: el clásico, el tradicional, el de personajes políticos, el estilo religioso, el personalizado, etc.
MATRIOSKAS Y MODA En 2009, Aliona Doletskaya (editora jefe de Vogue Rusia) celebró el X aniversario de esta institución, con una espectacular colección de 31 muñecas matryoshkas, encargadas a los mejores y más exclusivos artesanos rusos, pintadas a mano, talladas en madera con 50 cm. de altura. Estas bellezas fueron una excelente representación de algunos de los diseñadores más famosos y relevantes de las últimas décadas. Sin duda una auténtica reinterpretación de las famosas matryoshkas que buscaba fusionar artesanía, diseño, contemporaneidad y tradición.

he bright-eyed smiling Russian doll, or matryoshka, is without a doubt one of Russia’s most typical identity symbols. Although some people relate them to ancient carpentry and decorative craftsmanship, the truth is that the matryoshka was designed much later, in fact, it only goes back to the 19th century. It’s thought that the first dolls were made in 1890 by the craftsman Vasily Zvyozdochkin and painted by hand by the artist Sergey Malyutin, inspired by another set of dolls quite similar made out of porcelain and brought from Japan, which represented the wise Fukurama. Only 10 years later, the matryoshka was exhibited in the 1900 Paris Exposition and was recognized for being the best toy, not only for educational purposes, but also technical. The colourful doll was very popular among the visitors and won a bronze medal. FERTILITY SYMBOL The name matryoshka comes from Matryona, which was very popular in the 19th century. The name means “respectable lady” and “mother”. For the Russians, the Matryoshka is obviously “Matryona”, the personification of women’s health, fertility, great feminine disposition and a symbol of the family. In a short time, these "nested" dolls, one inside the other, became a symbol of patriotism, as well as a key element in Russian craftsmanship.
Today, the matryoshka is a typical present for weddings, as toys, as collector items, to decorate, when a child is born or as a mother’s day gift. GIFTS AND SOUVENIRS Since 1990, the matryoshka dolls in Russia became the perfect canvas for many artists to express their creativity. All the foreign tourists that visited Russia during that period remember the lines of souvenirs at Arbat Street in Moscow with matryoshkas painted in different styles that represented politicians, actors or pop stars. Even today, the people that visit Moscow or St. Petersburg will find
wooden dolls representing many Russian leaders, from today’s president, Vladimir Putin, to Peter the Great. Today, there are many styles to choose from: classical, traditional, political characters, religious, personalised, etc. The first representations of this popular souvenir were peasants, merchants and nobles. Over time, the shape of the doll has evolved, changing from a primitive style to a more stylish one. The largest set of matryoshka dolls ever made was a 72-piece set made for Lenin’s birthday in 1970. But the famous dolls kept going strong and are still being made in cities such as Sergei Posad, Semionovo and Polkhovsky Maidan, dedicated to the creation of these small works of art. MATRYOSHKAS AND FASHION In 2009, Aliona Doletskaya (editor-in-Chief of Vogue Russia) celebrated the 10th anniversary of this institution, with a spectacular collection of 31 matryoshka dolls, commissioned to the best and most exclusive Russian craftsmen, who hand-painted the 50 centimetre dolls. El Ballet del Bolshói surgió en 1776 y toma su nombre del teatro de Moscú en el que tiene su residencia, aunque su origen está en la escuela de danza de un orfanato de la capital rusa. Durante años tuvo competir con la reputación del Ballet Imperial Ruso, hoy conocido como el Ballet Mariinsky de San Petersburgo. BOLSHOI BALLET One of the most important Russian ballet companies is the one based in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow which, for over a century, has developed a unique style that differentiates it from other companies with more classical methods. Bolshoi Ballet was founded in 1776 and is named after the Moscow theatre where it’s based. Its earliest origins were in the dance school of an orphanage of the Russian capital. For years it struggled to compete with the reputation of the Imperial Russian Ballet, today's Mariinsky Ballet of Saint Petersburg. It wasn't until 1900, when Alexander Gorsky was named Master at the Bolshoi Theatre, that the company began to develop its own identity with acclaimed productions such as Don Quixote (1900),
Coppelia (1901), Swan Lake (1901), La fille mal gardée (1903), Giselle (1911), Le Corsaire (1912) or La Bayadère (1917). Today, the Bolshoi Ballet is still one of the most important ballet companies in the world, as well as being one of the largest, with approximately 220 dancers. Moscú rezuma historia de zares y de comunismo, pero la capital del país más grande del mundo también es una ciudad cosmopolita, donde la opulencia arquitectónica comparte protagonismo con su conocida admiración por las artes y la cultura. Con 12 millones de habitantes, Moscú se está abriendo cada vez más al turismo. ¿Y qué tiene la ciudad roja que la haga tan atractiva? Lo resumimos en una palabra: sorprende. Su poderío no deja indiferente. La ciudad es enorme (sólo el casco antiguo ocupa 1.000 km2), sus monumentos son imponentes y su metro es el más bonito del mundo. Aquí todo es a lo grande, muestra del pasado glorioso de la Unión Soviética. LA PLAZA ROJA, EL KILÓMETRO CERO El epicentro de Moscú, su kilómetro cero, es la Plaza Roja. Aunque muchos piensan que el nombre se debe al color de los ladrillos o al comunismo, lo cierto es que es una mera cuestión de lingüística. Su denominación, Красная (Krásnaya), significa “roja”, pero en ruso antiguo significaba “bonita”, es decir, la plaza bonita. Moscow is famous for its history of tsars and communism, but the capital of the world’s largest country is also a cosmopolitan city, where the impressive architecture shares the limelight with its renowned admiration for arts and culture. With 12 million inhabitants, Moscow is becoming more and more tourist-friendly. And what makes the Red City so attractive? We can sum it up in just one sentence: it’s full of surprises! The city’s vitality doesn’t leave anyone indifferent. The city is huge (its old town alone is spread over 1,000 square metres), its monuments are impressive and its metro is the most beautiful tube in the world. In Russia everything was done on a large scale, proving the glorious past of the Soviet Union. THE RED SQUARE, KILOMETRE ZERO The epicentre of Moscow, its kilometre zero, is the Red Square. Although many think that its name comes from the colour of the bricks or communism, the truth is that it’s due to linguistics. Its name, Красная (Krásnaya), means "red", but in old Russian it meant "beautiful", that is, the beautiful square. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 together with the Kremlin, it gathers the most touristic sites of the city. The first thing that stands out is its size: 330 meters long and 70 metres wide. Just thinking about the colossal military parades that took place in the USSR, with missiles included, is enough to give you goosebumps. The crown jewel in the Red Square is, without a shadow of a doubt, Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Its architecture, with its impressive coloured domes (originally gold-coloured), is famous in the whole world. It’s the most photographed building in Russia, Moscow’s best-known symbol and one of the world’s wonders. It’s considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. Legend has it that Ivan the Terrible ordered that the chief architect be blinded so he wouldn’t be able to create such a magnificent architectural masterpiece ever again.

LENIN’S MAUSOLEUM AND THE GUM Communism and capitalism are both present in the Red Square. On one side, we can see Lenin’s mausoleum and, on the other, the enormous GUM shopping centre, an old Soviet warehouse that today houses some of the most luxurious and internationally renowned fashion boutiques. In the heart of the city, the Red Square, you’ll also find the State Historical Museum, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Kazan Cathedral. The Kremlin This impressive red force houses palaces, where the Russian Government can be found and incredible cathedrals. Its beauty makes it one of the country’s most iconic symbols. Near the Kremlin, by the Moskva River, you’ll find the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the biggest one in Russia and the tallest orthodox church in the world. It was destroyed by Stalin in 1931 and rebuilt in the 90s. MOSCOW, A PARADISE FOR CULTURE AND ART Moscow’s inhabitants have always showed a great devotion towards their writers (like Gorki, Tolstói or Pushkin) and they are truly passionate about art, in all its forms and expressions. The city, full of theatres, has one of the most famous in the world, the Bolshói theatre, located near the Red Square, on one of Moscow’s most famous streets, the Tverskay. Art lovers should definitely plan a visit to the art galleries on Bolotny Island. RUSSIA’S BIG APPLE Moscow boasts of having an impressive skyline with skyscrapers and extensive green areas, elements that remind us of New York city. Apart from the financial district, we find Stalin’s Seven Sisters, seven huge skyscrapers that the Soviet leader ordered to build all over the city after the Second World War, so that Russia could keep looking like a powerful country to the rest of the world. Moscow, like any big city, also needed a green area to delight its inhabitants and visitors, at least during the summer months. That green zone is Gorki Park.

The Blue Eye of Siberia, as it is known, reaches 30 degrees below zero in winter and the lake is turned into ice whereas in summer, its water is incomparably crystal clear. Visiting it is like travelling to the end of the world.

METRO DE MOSCÚ UN MUSEO BAJO TIERRA La capital de la tierra del vodka es tan gigantesca que dicen que no llega una vida entera para conocerla. Es como la gran matrioshka rusa: capas y capas de historia se hacen visibles en esta titánica ciudad en la que los tesoros no están sólo en la superficie, sino también bajo tierra. El Moscú subterráneo deja boquiabierto a cualquier viajero. Y aunque parezca increíble, estamos hablando de su metro, considerado como el más bonito del mundo. El metro de Moscú, inaugurado en 1935, es una atracción turística principal. Conocido como “el Palacio del pueblo”, es un admirado museo bajo tierra, con una arquitectura sorprendente, que combina azulejos, preciosas lámparas, pinturas, y columnas y arcos que parecen sacados de auténticos palacios reales. Cuenta con más de 200 estaciones, 44 de ellas declaradas Patrimonio Cultural, y 10.000 trenes que transportan cada día a más de 9 millones de personas, que lo convierten en el metro con más densidad del mundo.

The capital of the land of vodka is so big that they say that a lifetime isn’t enough to discover it completely. It’s like the famous matryoshka doll, layers and layers of history visible in this titanic city in which treasures aren’t only on the surface but also below ground. The Moscow you’ll see underground will leave any traveller astounded. And, even though it sounds incredible, we’re referring to the Metro, considered the most beautiful one in the world. Moscow Metro, opened in 1935, is one of the main tourist attractions. Known as the “Palace of the people”, it’s an admired underground museum with a surprising architecture that combines tiles, beautiful lamps, paintings, columns and arches typical of true palaces. It has 200 stations, 44 of them World Heritage Sites, and 10 000 trains that transport more than 9 million people each day, which makes it the busiest metro system in the world. The first thing that will catch your eye are the kilometre-long escalators. There are stations that are 80 metres underground, which were used during bombings. But another thing that is surprising is the distance between one station and another. We’re not exaggerating when we say that Moscow is huge! PASSENGERS TO THE TRAIN! The line that tourists use the most is the brown one, number nine. This circular line is considered the most beautiful, but any of them will amaze visitors. You can hop on at any point and wander (be careful because all the signs are in Russian, although catching the drift is easy enough) or visit some of the most famous stations. That being said, bear in mind
that some of the names are impossible to remember (and pronounce). The deepest station of Moscow’s metro system is the Park Pobedy station, which runs down to 84 metres. It’s the second

We’re talking about the Trans-Siberian Railway, a globetrotting railway network. It starts in Moscow and runs a whopping 9,259 kilometres and has been operating for more than 100 years. “estáte quieto de una vez, ¡Tigre!” El consagrado pintor tinerfeño ha vuelto a su isla para preparar un proyecto que combina artes plásticas y nuevas tecnologías que se expondrá, en Arona [Tenerife] en 2020. Ruperto Cabrera ha vuelto en estas fechas a su terruño, a sus orígenes insulares, después de recorrer mucho mundo, armando ruido, dejando el reguero de las venas de su impronta y su arte por la geografía multinacional. Siempre he pensado desde que lo conozco, aunque él lo ignora, que, en realidad, era un actor de cine italiano y que lo de las artes plásticas era una forma de ocultar su verdadera personalidad. Ruperto es un personaje envolvente, que no envejece, con una genética seguramente alimentada a base de magma de la naturaleza volcánica de su país insular. Ha venido, a Tenerife, de vuelta momentánea, seguro que a recargar la batería de lava que le hace tan chispeante en el cuerpo a cuerpo. Aterrizó no hace tanto, en la isla, con la mochila cargada de lo vivido y trajinado fuera de nuestras fronteras en capitales y escenarios que son referencias mundiales [Art Basel de Miami, Affordable Art Fair de Nueva York, Museo Reina Sofía, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao etc.], enarbolando la bandera de que su obra haya sido seleccionada recientemente por la Colección BBVA para unirse al club de los elegidos, en ese prestigioso fondo público y permanente, junto a firmas célebres como Picasso, Miró o Barceló. Pero le da igual. Cada día despierta con un proyecto nuevo, revisitándose sin tregua ni pausa. No ha terminado de tomar todavía conciencia definitiva de que sus pasos vuelven a transitar por su íntimo barrio del Toscal y ya está dando la batalla con otro proyecto cargado de simbolismo e inspiración, con la colaboración de escritores de todas las islas, que dan calor con la palabra a su reinvención de la iconografía de las islas en una carpeta bautizada como Canarias, más que un regalo, exclusiva para el Gobierno de Canarias. Ruperto no se conforma con hipnotizarnos con las geometrías imposibles de sus acuñadas y ya familiares Perspectivas. Ahora está empeñado, como buen renacentista del XXI, en fundir las artes plásticas, en su esencia clásica, con la realidad virtual y expandida de las nuevas tecnologías. Y como no se puede estar tranquilo ni un suspiro pues agita el escenario isleño con su nuevo experimento multidisciplinar como el que quiere plasmar en Los Cristianos [Arona. Tenerife] en febrero de 2020. A ver si te estás quieto de una vez ¡Tigre!

Keep still Tiger! The renowned artist from Tenerife has returned to his island to prepare a project that combines plastic arts and new technologies that will be exhibited in Arona (Tenerife) in 2020.
After travelling around the world, making lots of noise and leaving his mark and art in the multinational countries he has visited, Ruperto Cabrera has recently returned to his homeland, to his island roots. Since the very first time I met him I have always known, even though he isn’t aware,, that he actually is an Italian film actor and that his work in plastic arts is just a way to hide his true personality. Ruperto is a charismatic character who never seems to age and his genetics are clearly nourished with the magma of the volcanic nature of his island. He has come to Tenerife, for a short visit, most probably to recharge the lava battery that makes him so lively. He arrived on the island not so long ago with a backpack full of experiences gained outside our borders, in capitals and places that are world references (Art Basel in Miami, Affordable Art Fair in New York, Museo Reina Sofía, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao etc.). He arrived hoisting the flag as his work has recently been chosen by the BBVA Collection to join the club, a prestigious public and permanent Fund alongside famous icons such as Picasso, Miró and Barceló. But he doesn’t care at all about that. Every day he wakes up with a new project in mind, as if he had no time to lose. He hasn’t even had time to settle in his hometown Toscal yet, but he’s already starting a new project full of symbolism and inspiration. This project is in collaboration with writers from all of the islands who give a warm touch to the project with their words in the reinvention of the iconography of the islands in a file baptised as Canarias, más que un regalo [Canaries, more than a gift], exclusively for the Government of the Canary Islands. Hypnotizing us with the impossible geometries of his coined and already well-known Perspectivas is not enough for Ruperto, as a Renaissance artist of the XXI century, he is now determined to merge plastic arts, in its classical essence, with the expanded and virtual reality of the new technologies. And, as he can’t keep still for any length of time, he has enlightened the island with a new multidisciplinary experiment like the one he will show in Los Cristianos (Arona. Tenerife) in February 2020. Let’s see if you can keep still, Tiger!

Aunque se discute si es de origen ruso o polaco, si hay una bebida que asociemos a los rusos es el vodka, y si pensamos que Rusia es el país que más lo consume no es así, la bebida más popular para los rusos es el té, debido a las bajas temperaturas de la región. Precisamente por el frío, los rusos intentaron buscar una bebida que resistiera a las gélidos inviernos y de ahí, el vodka, una bebida que tenía el suficiente alcohol como para no congelarse, unos 40 grados.

And, if you think that it’s in this country where it’s consumed the most, then think again! The most popular drink in Russia is actually tea because of the cold weather. Due to such low temperatures, Russians started searching for a drink that could resist the cold winter, and found that vodka had enough alcohol –around 40%- to not freeze.

Al vodka le pegan carnes grasas o pescados salados o ahumados, entrantes de verduras encurtidas, salmón o caviar.
In Russia, no table is complete without a bottle of vodka. It’s accustomed to drink vodka during meals, almost as if it were a ritual. Unlike us, who usually mix it in a long drink with juice, they drink it in a shot glass, which they call “ryumka”, before drinking the beverage they’ve chosen to enjoy during the meal, depending on what goes better with the food. Vodka is a good choice for fatty meats or salted and smoked fish and starters such as picked vegetables, salmon or caviar.

Conocido como el chef del mar, es uno de los cocineros que más tiempo dedica a la investigación y a la experimentación antes de crear cada plato. Ello le ha valido, además de multitud de premios y reconocimientos, haber descubierto diferentes productos marinos que, hasta el momento, nadie se había planteado llevar a la mesa. Por esto y por mucho más, la historia de Ángel León merece ser contada des-pa-ci-to. Nuestro chef nació en 1977, en Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) y desde muy pequeño fue fraguando una fuerte vinculación con el mar. Primero, a través de la pesca, una actividad que compartía con su familia, y más adelante, a través, de la que sería su amada profesión. Empezó a estudiar gastronomía en 1994 en la Taberna de Alabardero (Sevilla) y tres años más tarde, viajó hasta Francia para trabajar en el restaurante Le Chapon Fin. Allí, y en las diferentes ciudades europeas que visitó durante aquella época, se nutrió de la visión y creatividad que, posteriormente, pondría en práctica en el que es su gran restaurante: Aponiente. Aponiente fue inaugurado en 2007, después de que Ángel León volviera a España y estuviera al mando de algunas cocinas, como la de La Casa del Temple (Toledo). Aquí, el gaditano introdujo los pescados de descarte y el plancton marino como ingredientes fundamentales de una cocina inspirada, única y exclusivamente, en su amor por el mar. Tan solo tres años después de la apertura, consiguió la primera estrella Michelín e incorporó a la carta lo que fue todo un bombazo: los embutidos de pescado.
EL PLANCTON MARINO DE ÁNGEL LEÓN FUE EL PRIMER ‘NOVEL FOOD’ ESPAÑOL APROBADO POR LA UNIÓN EUROPEA EN EL 2014. Asimismo, tras exhaustivas investigaciones junto con la Universidad de Cádiz, consiguió llevar “la luz del mar” a una copa. Como él mismo ha contado en alguna ocasión, la experiencia se logra con una especie de cangrejo que, liofilizado, pulverizado y añadido en un agua de tomate, reproduce una bioluminiscencia de las más bonitas que ha podido ver en las profundidades y que emula a la perfección un cielo estrellado. Actualmente, el restaurante cuenta, entre otros reconocimientos, con tres estrellas Michelín y tres Soles Repsol y fue considerado Mejor Restaurante por el Club de Gourmets en 2018. Aunque no parece haber nada que calme las ansias por innovar de este loco de la gastronomía y hace unos meses, el chef presentó en Madrid Fusión su sal viva, dejando a todos los presentes boquiabiertos. Esta es una de las principales novedades que ya se pueden disfrutar en Aponiente, aunque no es la única y es que según afirma Ángel León, “esta temporada vamos a cocinar más para el mundo”. Además, entre sus objetivos a medio plazo está el poder eliminar por completo el pescado de su carta para centrarse en otros productos marinos y el crear un centro de investigaciones marinas, a partir del 2020, con un equipo de biólogos. A todas las proezas del cocinero, hay que sumarle que es el chef con mayor número de estrellas Michelín en Andalucía, tanto por las tres de Aponiente como por la de Alevante, su restaurante en el complejo hotelero Meliá Sancti Petri (Chiclana). Parece que hay poco que se le resista, así que nosotros ya estamos deseando descubrir, qué será lo próximo que rescate del fondo del mar…

ÁNGEL LEÓN THE “MAD” CHEF
Known as the chef of the sea, he’s one of the cooks that dedicates the most time to researching and experimenting before creating a new dish. By doing so, apart from winning various prizes and awards, he has discovered marine products that, until now, no one had thought of bringing to the table. Because of this and many other reasons, Ángel León’s story is worth sharing. Our chef was born in 1977, in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). From an early age he began to develop a strong connection with the sea. First, through fishing, an activity he shared with his family and, later on, through what would become his profession. He began his studies in gastronomy in 1994 in the Taberna de Alabardero (Sevilla) and, three years later, he travelled to France to work in the restaurant Le Chapon Fin. There, and in other European cities he visited during that time, he was nourished by the vision and creativity that he later applied to his great restaurant: Aponiente. The opening took place in 2007, after Ángel León had spent some time back in Spain working as head chef in different restaurants, for example La Casa del Temple in Toledo. Here, he introduced discards and marine plankton as essential ingredients to a cuisine inspired solely and exclusively on his love for the sea. Only three years after the opening, he received his first Michelin star and added to the menu what would become a total hit: cold meats made of fish. After thorough research together with the University of Cádiz, he was able to recreate “sea light” in a glass. As he has explained on several occasions, to recreate the experience you need a type of crab that, freeze-dried, pulverized and added to tomato water, reproduces the most beautiful bioluminescence he has ever seen in the depths and emulates a starry sky to perfection. To this day, Aponiente, among other awards, has three Michelin stars and three Repsol suns. It has also been named Best Restaurant by Club de Gourmets in 2018. It seems that there’s nothing capable of calming the mad chef’s willingness to innovate. A few months ago he presented in Madrid Fusión his living salt, leaving everyone astounded. This is one of the novelties already present in Aponiente, although it’s not the only one! As the chef has said, “this season we’re going to cook more for the world”. His mediumterm goal is to eliminate fish completely from his menu to focus on other marine products and create a marine research centre in 2020 with a team of biologists. To all his great achievements, we must add that he’s the chef with the most Michelin stars in Andalusia. Apart from the three ones he has for Aponiente, he also has one for Alevante, his restaurant in the Meliá Sancti Petri hotel in Chiclana. It seems that Ángel León is a person that achieves everything he sets his mind to, so we’re already waiting to see what the next thing he rescues from the bottom of the sea is going to be.

PLÁTANO
A LA FRAMBUESA Cuando pensamos en el color amarillo, una de las primeras cosas que se nos viene a la mente es un plátano. Pero ¿eres capaz de imaginarte esta popular fruta con otros colores? No estarías haciendo un ejercicio de ciencia ficción, pues el plátano rojo es una realidad. Desde hace unos años este sorprendente alimento se cultiva en Canarias y Málaga. Lo primero que llama la atención de este tipo de plátano es su intenso y exótico tono rojo. Además, nuestras papilas gustativas lo distinguirán del original al poseer un sabor que recuerda bastante al de la frambuesa. Otra de sus curiosidades es que, si en el amarillo sabemos que está lo suficientemente maduro para consumirlo cuando pasa de verde a este color, en el rojo se encontrará listo cuando observemos que la piel adquiere un tono más marrón. Esta fruta es más popular en América Latina que en Europa, motivo por el cual no tiene mucha presencia en nuestro mercado. Por supuesto, el plátano rojo también es rico en vitamina C y aporta potasio. Entre sus otras propiedades, contiene vitamina A y E, además de magnesio y fibra. No cabe duda de que, como mínimo, es una fruta que llama mucho la atención. Merece la pena probar, al menos una vez, ese sabor que evoca a la frambuesa. Eso sí, donde esté un buen plátano de Canarias que se quiten todos los demás.
RED BANANA One of the first things that come to mind when we think of the colour yellow is a banana. But can you imagine this popular fruit in any other colour? You wouldn’t be imagining something out of a science fiction film as red bananas already exist! The Canary Islands and Malaga have been growing this amazing fruit for the past few years. The first thing that will catch your eye when you see this banana is its exotic tone of red. Our taste buds will also notice a difference as this original fruit has a slight raspberry flavour. Also, we know that a yellow banana is ripe when it goes from green to yellow, but it’s a different kettle of fish when it comes to this type of banana. We’ll know when the red banana is ready to be eaten when it begins to turn brown. The reason you haven’t seen many of them around is because this fruit is more popular in Latin America than in Europe. Needless to say, red bananas are rich in vitamin C and are a good source of vitamin A and E, potassium, magnesium and fibre. It’s obvious that we’re quite curious and we think everyone should try a raspberry-flavoured banana at least once, but, let’s face it, if we had to choose, we’d stick with the bananas from the Canary Islands.
