Dr. Danielle Hansen Initiates LECOM Speaker Series at Jefferson Educational Society
Care. Compassion. Community: LECOM Behavioral Health
A partnership between the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM)/LECOM Health and the Jefferson Educational Society (JES) in Erie, Pennsylvania continues this year with a Speaker Series addressing issues pertaining to Mental Health.
Leading the Series for LECOM was Danielle Hansen, D.O., M.S., M.H.S.A., who serves as Vice President of Acute Care, Behavioral Health and Quality at Millcreek Community Hospital. Dr. Hansen also serves as the Medical Director for Medical Associates of Erie and as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine. She is a specialist in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics with the LECOM Institute for Successful Living.
As a 2007 LECOM graduate with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree, Dr. Hansen went on to earn a Master of Science in Medical Education and a Master of Health Services Administration from LECOM.
A host of LECOM Health speakers will present their programs throughout the JES Spring Series.
Mark Strazisar, D.O., a Psychiatrist at Millcreek Community Hospital (MCH) and Instructor at LECOM, will offer a presentation on May 8, 2024, highlighting the topic of self-harm.
Psychiatrist, Brenda Stillman, D.O., will present her lecture entitled, Navigating the Caregiving Role, on May 20, 2024.

Brenton J. Song, D.O., a General and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist, will present information on May 21, 2024 highlighting Mental Healthcare in Rural Communities.
David Figueroa, D.O., a Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist, will speak about the Mental Health of Child Refugees. His presentation will be offered on May 23, 2024.
Dr. Hansen’s presentation in February illustrated the prevalence of mental health concerns in the region and across the country, noting that 65 million Americans suffer with mental illness – far more than other chronic diseases – and in the Erie region, the suicide rate is higher than the rest of the state and the country as a whole.
Another alarming statistic: Every 11 minutes, someone dies by suicide.
Highlighting a number of health disparities, Dr. Hansen explained that 80% of those with a mental health disorder do visit a primary care physician, but 50% of those referred to an outpatient behavioral health clinic do not make their first appointment.
With four easily accessible entities and 22 different locations, LECOM Behavioral Health is meeting the needs of the region for better access to care in mental health. As is the College tradition, LECOM has addressed those needs by educating and training future physicians to deliver the highest level of care.
The Achievement Center of LECOM Health, Corry Counseling of LECOM Health, LECOM Institute for Behavioral Health, and Millcreek Community Hospital all serve as part of the largest and most comprehensive behavioral health network in the region.
Dr. Hansen expounded upon more than a dozen levels of care that LECOM Behavioral Health Services provide. There are a vast number of options for patients needing care for mental health, and those options can be provided to persons of any age.
Dr. Hansen’s presentation pointed out that $193.2 billion are lost in earnings each year due to serious mental health issues. Elementary and high school students are three times more likely to repeat a grade if they have mental, emotional, or behavioral issues, and globally, depression and anxiety disorders cost $1 trillion in lost productivity each year.
With LECOM Behavioral Health professionals available, there is hope, and JES leaders acknowledge that.

“We are doing this because we know the importance of opening a dialogue, informing the public, and connecting residents to resources available to them,” Jefferson Educational Society Vice President Ben Speggen said. “One needn’t read beyond the headlines to know there’s a rise in mental health concerns,” he noted.
“Erie is blessed to have such an asset and resource in LECOM. Together, through this new series, we are seeking to help many Erie County residents get access to the information and resources they need to improve their health needs or the needs of a loved one,” the JES Vice President affirmed.
Embodying the Osteopathic Philosophy and underscoring that whole health includes body, mind, and spirit, LECOM Behavioral Health Services educates the community, promotes improved mental health, increases access to and quality of care, and reduces the stigma associated with mental health issues.
Jefferson Educational Society President Dr. Ferki Ferati noted that LECOM healthcare professionals, spotlighted in the JES Programs offered throughout Erie County, will make vital connections for those needing resources.
“We have been grateful for the enduring partnership between LECOM and the JES over the years,” Dr. Ferati announced. He concluded, “When it comes to addressing something so critically important - like mental health - we are honored to be working with LECOM and to be featuring their experts on our platform.”

The Mercy Hospital mission follows the heritage of the Sisters of Mercy, delivering care to places where it is most needed and serving people where they live. Likewise, LECOM has a long-standing mission of prescient discernment of need, establishing its well-regarded medical education and healthcare footprint in many regions across the United States.
For more than three decades, LECOM has realized its foundational promise under the skillful and steady direction of its President and CEO, John M. Ferretti, D.O., who has established, expanded, and advanced the LECOM mission, guiding the bold and purposeful path of all that is LECOM.
“It’s important to have an honest collaboration such as this in bringing together a shared vision,” explained Silvia M. Ferretti, D.O., LECOM Provost, Senior Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs. “We find that in working together with Mercy Jefferson, our mutual goals of serving those in need will be met,” the LECOM leader affirmed. Dr. Silvia Ferretti has been instrumental in the resounding success of the College and in ensuring that a LECOM medical education has become the hallmark of excellence throughout the healthcare professions.
LECOM chose Mercy Jefferson for its rural setting as such rural communities require supplemental support to sustain healthcare resources. Rural healthcare facilities also provide to medical students - those who seek to serve in rural areas - the chance to learn within that same setting.
Approximately 70% of LECOM graduates become Primary Care Physicians. Mercy prioritizes increasing the number of Primary Care Physicians to ensure patients receive the access that they need to maintain their good health and to prevent otherwise avoidable hospital care. Such efforts are particularly important in rural settings where often, there are fewer healthcare options.
“Medical students often grow to love the communities in which they undergo their training. After all, they’ll be there for several years,” Dr. Rowane commented. “Frequently, once these students become doctors, they choose to remain in the community,” he concluded.
The new LECOM regional campus includes the added benefit of offering the LECOM Early Acceptance Program. Through this Program, LECOM and Mercy will team with local high schools and colleges to identify potential medical school candidates, providing to those

students the opportunity to earn an advanced degree.
“Less than 7% of Jefferson County residents have earned a Master’s Degree or higher,” revealed Dr. Karthik Iyer, “We see a tremendous opportunity for us to grow that number by removing potential barriers and improving access to higher education,” the Mercy Jefferson Chief Medical Officer assured.
LECOM seeks to assist applicants who are the first in their family to enter higher education. Moreover, the College proudly offers one of the lowest tuition fees in the nation for private medical colleges; and LECOM provides financial aid to 89% of its scholars.
KarthikIyer, M.D.
The first cohort of 12 medical students will arrive at Mercy Hospital Jefferson this summer; and the Regional Campus will expand during the coming years to welcome as many as 72 medical students. Mercy Jefferson will provide all clinical rotations, training students to become skilled and compassionate physicians; and its clinicians will have the opportunity to serve as medical education faculty.
“The chance to serve as faculty is a significant draw for many physicians,” Dr. Iyer noted. “I’ve spoken to several doctors who told me that serving at a teaching hospital swayed them to stay. It will undoubtedly help us recruit additional physicians to Mercy Jefferson, which is a huge win for the entire community,” he affirmed.
“We are immensely proud of what this Regional Campus means for Jefferson County,” said Dan Eckenfels, Mercy Jefferson Communities President. “Mercy Regional President Eric Ammons took the idea and connected us with Dr. Rowane and LECOM, a pivotal starting point in getting us where we are today. I look forward to seeing how Dr. Iyer and the LECOM team grow this program and make it a crown jewel of Jefferson County,” beamed Mr. Eckenfels.
From the soul of the heartland to the farthest corners of communities across the nation, LECOM healthcare professionals are making an important and positive difference in the betterment of health and wellness.

Lieutenant Commander Chad E. Walls, D.O., M.C., U.S.N. - Paying Tribute to a True Leader
Chad E. Walls, D.O., M.C., U.S.N.
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) dims its collective lights as the College family takes heavy-hearted note of the loss of LCDR Chad E. Walls, D.O., M.C., U.S.N.
Helen Keller once remarked that, “Life’s true happiness is attained through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” Indeed, Dr. Walls lived by that principle. His was a life committed to worthy accomplishment - a testament to action, to mission - to purpose.
A LECOM alumnus, Dr. Walls was a well-respected orthopedic surgeon.
A 2010 LECOM Bradenton graduate, Dr. Walls distinguished himself with the achievement of many academic awards, ranking in the top quartile of his class.
Dr. Walls fulfilled his four-year active duty military obligation as Flight Surgeon and Senior Medical Officer for Training Air Wing FOUR with the United States Navy, where he was responsible for the medical care and medical readiness of more than 1,400 active duty United States Navy personnel. He conducted his Transitional Year Internship at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia; and he undertook his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Millcreek Community Hospital.
Dr. Walls served as Director of Orthopedic Trauma at Conemaugh Hospital (Pennsylvania) where he was lauded as a kind and compassionate surgeon and a partner who readily accepted the most difficult of cases to help others.
Dr. Walls is survived by his beloved and caring wife, Dr. Karisa Beebe.
Most recently, Dr. Walls served as an orthopedic surgeon at Penn Medicine - Lancaster General Health.
The absence of this caring and competent LECOM family member - physician and healer - will be felt profoundly and palpably by all who knew him.

LECOM-Sponsored Run the Riverwalk Marks Success
Enthusiastic participants in the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM)sponsored Run the Riverwalk enjoyed a rare opportunity to run (or walk) across the well-recognized Green Bridge in downtown Bradenton, Florida.
The event was held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, highlighting an active lifestyle and celebrating health and fitness.
Participants ran a 5K (3.1 miles) route or walked one mile on the scenic course through downtown Bradenton, along the picturesque waterfront and across the bridge.
As runners and walkers crossed the finish line, they were met with the bustling activities associated with the concurrent Bradenton Area River Regatta.
All proceeds from the Run the Riverwalk event benefited the LECOM Student Scholarship Fund, which assists in defraying the educational costs of future LECOM healthcare professionals.
Mark Kauffman, D.O., LECOM Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, explained that LECOM was delighted to bring nearly 400 walkers and runners to the Riverwalk and to sponsor a thrilling day for the community. “We are proud to help future doctors, dentists, pharmacists,
podiatrists, and healthcare business leaders by providing the proceeds from the event to the LECOM Student Scholarship Fund,” affirmed the LECOM leader.
The race generated approximately $40,000 for the LECOM Scholarship Fund, and boasted more than 70 student volunteers and 400 runners.
The race began promptly at 8:30 a.m.; and post-race participants cooled down, rehydrated, and energized themselves with options aplenty provided by generous race day sponsors.
Since its inception, LECOM has taken to heart the concept that the Community is our Campus. To promote fitness and wellness for the betterment of the community, LECOM consistently supports activities that further its important mission.
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine proudly sponsored the Run the Riverwalk, continuing that stalwart mission.
