text Iris Sikking, Birgit Donker, Claudia Chamorro, Lucrecia Conget, Hedy van Erp, Francisco Estévez, Chas Gerretsen, Markha Valenta, Wilco Versteeg, Together with the Nederlands Fotomuseum, Lecturis is publishing Starring Chas Gerretsen. This monograph tells the extraordinary life story of Charles (Chas) Gerretsen (1943), an exceptional photographer. In addition to working as a war reporter in Asia, he also worked as a photographer in Hollywood, where he photographed the set of the film classic ‘Apocalypse Now’ and many film stars in their early years. The photography of Chas Gerretsen, whose life story reads like an exciting book, is still hardly known in the Netherlands. Growing up in Groningen, he quickly sought adventure as an eighteen-year-old.

In addition to the 200 photos from the exhibition, the book also includes archival materials such as travel documents and letters. In addition, essays by curators of the Museo de la Memoria y Los Derechos Humanos in Santiago, Chile, among others, have been incorporated into the book.

The book is published on the occasion of the first retrospective exhibition of his oeuvre, a world first! The exhibition of the same name Starring Chas Gerretsen can be seen in the Nederlands Fotomuseum from 15 October 2021 to 22 April 2022. With this, the Nederlands Fotomuseum is realizing for the first time an exhibition and publication by a Collection Photographer who is still alive. His special archive was acquired in 1995 and in recent years work has been done on organizing the archive and digitizing it. A process to which Chas Gerretsen and his partner Monika Pfandzelter have made a very valuable contribution by sharing all the stories with the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Starring Chas Gerretsen is the second monograph in an ongoing series on the Collection of the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Previously published publications: Strong Stories, Rotterdam Works!, Gallery of Honour of Dutch Photography, and the monograph From Peking to Paris about Ellen Thorbecke. Looking for Elvis

MUSIC

text Godfried Nevels

In Op zoek naar Elvis (Looking for Elvis), Godfried Nevels engages in conversation with friends and acquaintances of Elvis Presley to record their personal memories of The King. From renowned session musicians, gospel singers and girlfriends to classmates, Hollywood actresses and American celebrities. For example, Wink Martindale looks back on Elvis’ radio debut in 1954, Larry Geller reports on the historic meeting between Elvis and The Beatles in 1965, Ginger Alden talks about Elvis’ last days before his death in 1977, and Cyril Wecht explains why the Elvis’ official cause of death can’t be right. But lesser-known stories are also included, such as the long journey that Elvis’ first guitar has traveled since 1946, the forgotten first percussionist of Elvis at Sun Records, the fight at a gas station that was ended by Elvis in 1977 and never revealed before information about the life of Colonel Parker.

Godfried Nevels (1973) is a freelance journalist, writer and music critic. He previously published the books Dutch In The USA, Forever 27 and I Love 80’s Music. He also writes articles and reviews for a number of music magazines.

The search for Elvis also puts Godfried in touch with Don McLean, Bill Medley and Tito Jackson, with a sister of Johnny Cash, with band members from Chicago and Little River Band and with songwriters of Elvis tribute songs like Black Velvet (Alannah Myles) and Eternal Flame (The Bangles). In addition, Waylon, Danny Vera, Barry Hay, Leo Blokhuis, George Baker and Evi Hanssen, among others, tell how much Elvis and his music mean to them. The foreword is written by Waylon.

On Strength and Character

PHOTOGRAPHY

Dutch women in top sport

concept and photos Laura de Mildt text Carolina Trujillo image editing Marc Prust Always wanting to be the best, because everything is a competition. Your life revolves around being just that little bit better than the other. You want to be on number 1and she’s next. You’re just a bit faster, just a little stronger, just a little more tactical by training better, eating smarter, having more focus, putting more aside and having even more willpower. Because you have what it takes to make it to that top. By doing the right thing at the right time... but what is the right thing at what time? Dutch women in top sport know that everything is a competition, that the podium is a merciless temptation until there is someone else number one. And when the other is in your place, you have to move on, without that stage, wean the addictive adrenaline and find your place somewhere else. As yourself, the woman you are, with those special qualities that have brought you this far. As the woman who might also want to be a mother, the woman who can be vulnerable and who wants to make a career off the stage. Without competition. Without winning and without losing.

Laura de Mildt (1983) is a Dutch photographer. She mainly focuses on making por trait series, looking for diversity and the characteristic features of the person in front of the lens. In this series of por traits of Dutch women in top spor t, Laura wants to put the woman behind the sport on a pedestal, regardless of age, performance, limitations or background. With this she wants to highlight the individual and collective strength and beauty of these Dutch women, who all clearly stand for who they are and what they do.

Laura de Mildt made portraits of these Dutch top women who give and have given everything for the sport. For that first place, for the win. And who are above all women.

Behind the Walls of the Hermitage

PHOTOGRAPHY

Wijnanda Deroo

photography Wijnanda Deroo text Mikhail Piotrovsky, Cees Nooteboom The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg is unfathomably vast and filled with infinite objects. Amazingly, behind the walls of its galleries, completely hidden from view, are infinitely more objects in floor upon floor of storage rooms and laboratories. In four trips to Russia in 2018-2019, Wijnanda Deroo moved through these outer-worldly environments with her camera, using available light, not displacing a thing. This book shares her revelations. The small-image strips that snake through these pages document the architectural marvels to which she was granted access, namely the historical palace buildings and the contemporary Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Centre, and show the immensity of the settings where the rooms in these images are hidden. These photographs are at once dream-like and utterly without pretensions, both incredibly grand and unusually intimate. They inspire by their ordinary wonder.

AM I NOT LIGHT

PHOTOGRAPHY

Bob Farese, Jr.

gedicht en foto’s photography Bob Bob Farese, Farese, Jr. Jr.

In 2015, photographer and scientist Bob Farese, Jr., moved to a new and somewhat bewildering city, finding himself suddenly without the usual creature comforts of family and friends, and experiencing aloneness in an unexpected way. To soothe his feelings of isolation, Farese began taking street photographs drawing inspiration from the spontaneous and observational style of iPhone photographers David Guttenfelder and Gueorgui Pinkhassov and the work of Cartier-Bresson. Images were captured in a mindful, open and receptive manner, alert to interesting viewpoints of everyday things that are hidden in plain view. Beauty in the banal. Over the next five years, Farese continued his deeply personal photographic journey with perceptive guidance from his mentor, the noted British/Egyptian photographer, Laura El-Tantawy. Over 100 of Farese’s exquisite images from the collection will be published in his first monograph, Am I Not Light (Lecturis, August 2021). The work reflects the photographer’s experience of arrival, the yearning for connection, and the newfound feeling of solitude. It is a meditation on loneliness, but not on solitary aloneness. Rather it expresses how one can feel alone even whilst being among many.

Bob Farese, Jr. is a doctor and a research scientist with a love for the creative ar ts, including photography and music. A longtime artist with pencil or paintbrush, recently he discovered the joy of making sketches with a camera. He studied and learned photography under the teaching and influences of David Guttenfelder, Ed Kashi, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Tatiana Sotnikova, Laura El-Tantawy, and his wife, Nancy Richards Farese. He lives in Boston and the San Francisco Bay area. His Instagram page serves as a public gallery, a diary filled with “visual poetry”, and his photos have been selected for several awards for mobile photography. Am I Not Light is his first photo book.

The images are lyrical, sometimes sensual, at times direct, often with a delicate distance. They made their way into the photographer’s eye from his peripheral vision, unexpectedly, as light called out to him. Many are abstractions of the ordinary, framed with an aesthetic to render them extraordinary. English format 165 x 224 size 316 pages Japanese bound in hardcover 12

To Be Frank

PHOTOGRAPHY

Frank van Driel

photography Frank van Driel concept Frank van Driel, Karin van den Dool, Patricia de Leuw, Wendel Visser, Yolande Overberg Frank’s still lifes, the nudes, the portraits and self-portraits and visual expressions are all here in his first monograph. They show the imprint of his traditional Dutch roots through beauty and decay. All this done in his signature style Dutch daylight. This publication is a unique mix of art photography, Frank’s view on the art of perception, his passion and the story behind his work. Frank considers himself a visual artist with a strong affinity with the past while living in the present. His contemporary works often have a melancholy feel about them. They tell you something about the maker and as you’re getting to know him and reading more about the background of the photos, you’ll start looking more closely and discover the layering in his work. That is why I feel a strong connection with the Dutch/ Flemish painters of the past. They are my cultural heritage. Painters like Willem Claesz. Clara Peeters, Pieter Claesz. and Willem Kalf all told their personal stories and so do I. TO BE FRANK is a collection of more than one hundred of his most beautiful images. It invites you to accompany him on an inspirational journey connecting the past, the present and the future. It will shed light on the hidden layers and thoughts to be found in his oeuvre.

Frank van Driel was born in the city of Leiden, birthplace of Rembrandt, in the Netherlands. After taking an MBA programme at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, majoring in change management, he worked for KMPG consulting. But in 2002, he made a 180-degree career switch when he picked up his camera again, this time professionally. Since 2014, he has focused entirely on ar t photography with great success. He is invited to par ticipate in many photo exhibitions and art fairs. Frank exhibits his work in major cities around the world - Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, London, Karlsruhe and Hong Kong.

To be frank is a beautiful overview of Van Driels oeuvre, Frank as a photographer, artist but above all as a human, living life with empathy, wonderment and an inquiring mind. English format 300 x 375 mm size 304 pages hardcover

Pinholes and fragments from the life of a mother with dementia

photography/pinholes and text Miek van Dongen

With her mother’s dementia as the reason, Miek van Dongen has delved into the world that is hidden behind a dementia process. To closely monitor the changes in the dementia process, she made a pinhole on every visit during her mother’s last year of life; about 45 pieces. With the book Toon mij wie je bent (Show Me Who You Are), she puts her finger on the sore spot. The subtle shifts are visible and enhanced by the authentic artisanal pinhole technique (made on photosensitive paper in a box with a small hole). The effect is unpredictable and surprising. The more the person with dementia stops and blurs, the sharper the image becomes. Miek has examined the experiences and amazement during this process essayistically and elaborated them in fragments; into a universal subject in which both parent and child, as well as the reader and spectator, are questioned about everyone’s own reality. The title Toon mij wie je bent indicates that a new view of reality is needed. This intimate art project brings the world of dementia very humanly close.

Miek van Dongen (autonomous ar t AKV St Joost ‘s-Hertogenbosch, 2013) As a visual ar tist she is concerned with the genius loci; the spirit of the place. In her work she explores the meaning of situations in change. In this way she appropriates displaced landscapes again and por trays the absent presence of abruptly abandoned houses. In Show me who you are, Miek looks attentively at her mother’s being, who changes as a result of dementia. Star ting from photography, she uses different media to apply new layers that shed an unprecedented light on the changing world around us.

photography Jennifer Drabbe

today is my new favourite day celebrates the purity and freshness of youth. Jennifer Drabbe, who spent a large part of her childhood at boarding school, watches with wonder and amazement how her daughters move about in the safety of a family home. Fascinated and inspired by this gentle world unfolding before her eyes Jennifer aimed her camera at them for over ten years. She captures unexpected moments and details. The scenes we witness are sometimes spontaneous, sometimes staged. The daughters used as actors. We are drawn into the images through the strong use of form and abstraction. Jennifer Drabbe has researched our personal, often unconscious, behaviour in a humorous way for quite some time. Previously on stage as a theater director, now as a photographer. today is my new favourite day is a surprising, well designed and tactile book in which intimate daily moments are conveyed in strong, sometimes theatrical, images.

Jennifer Drabbe (1969) graduated in 1996 as a director at the Toneelschool in Amsterdam and has made performances at the Haarlemse Toneelschuur and Theater Bellevue, among others. Since 2008 she has focused on photography as a visual language. In 2018 she will complete The FOTOfactory in Amsterdam. The Norbertines of Sint-Catharinadal

PHOTOGRAPHY

Sint-Catharinadal 750 years

photography Koos Breukel text Femke Deen In honor of the 750th anniversary of the Norbertinessen sisters of the priory Sint-Catharinadal, the well-known Dutch photographer Koos Breukel portrayed the sisters in the summer of 2021. The photos pay tribute to one of the oldest religious communities in our country. The Norbertinessen monastery SintCatharinadal was founded in Wouw, but soon moved to Breda due to flooding in West Brabant. The sisters have lived in Oosterhout since 1647. Koos Breukel (The Hague, 1962) is one of the Netherlands’ best-known portrait photographers. Breukel: “I always try to work with someone completely blank. […] My photos are actually made out of curiosity about a person. That’s in those photos. A photo explains nothing, but actually keeps the mystery alive.”

Femke Deen is a historian and author of the biography Anna van Saksen Rejected Bride of William of Orange. Deen obtained her doctorate in 2012 with a thesis on the role of propaganda and media during the Dutch Revolt in Amsterdam. She worked as a journalist for de Volkskrant and Historisch Nieuwsblad.

In the publication, a wide selection of Breukel’s photos is accompanied by texts and interviews by Femke Deen.

Faces of Valkenburg

PHOTOGRAPHY

Hans Hoenjet

text Hans Hoenjet

Most photo books about Valkenburg are of a nostalgic nature or are used for city promotion. They are full of slick pictures of cultural-historical monuments, folklore and hilly landscapes. In short, they show an idealized Valkenburg. Gezichten van Valkenburg (Faces of Valkenburg) has a different perspective. More than a hundred expressive photos provide a surprising and unadorned picture of mass tourism and the quiet, hidden side of Valkenburg between 1949 and 1989. The result is a book about a turbulent tourist town that keeps reinventing itself.

Hans Hoenjet (1953) selected the photos and wrote the connecting texts. He grew up in Valkenburg and published on art & literature in De Volkskrant, NRC Handelsblad and HP/DeTijd. In addition, several books were published by him and he was a teacher of Dutch at a university of applied sciences.

The virus versus Eindhoven (par t 2)

text & photography Hildegard Hick

When Hildegard Hick’s first photo book, Sitlstaan en doorgaan – het virus versus Eindhoven, ‘Corona’ seemed almost under control. Shops opened their doors again, terraces were allowed to be visited and hairdressers could cut hair again. Vaccines were being made. However, the road to the ‘new normal’ was not yet completely paved. At the end of December 2020, the second lockdown in the Netherlands was a fact and everything was locked again. Various companies had a hard time, because strict measures remained in force and new measures were introduced. This led to layoffs and even bankruptcies in various sectors. No theatre, museum or cinema visits, no events, food and drinks were only allowed on the terrace at a sufficient distance, no audience at sports events, no holidays abroad. mouth caps were made mandatory, ‘get vaccinated’, curfew, keep one and a half meters away, no shaking hands and no hugs. “We’ll do it all together”, we said during the first lockdown. This took on a different meaning during the second lockdown. Unrest arose, the atmosphere grew grim and led to demonstrations and even riots of unprecedented proportions. Because many people were vaccinated, the number of infections decreased. In September 2021, a large number of measures were relaxed, bringing us closer to our ‘old normal’. The most important measure, one and a half meters away, was cancelled! From washing hands, now to shaking hands and even a hug! Dutch format 170 x 240 mm size 136 pages softcover 18

Eindhoven

HISTORY

Transformations without Blueprint

text Thom Aussems, Hans Horsten

The ultimate book about the history of Eindhoven in 2 parts. One hundred years ago, Eindhoven took a giant leap when it annexed Gestel, Strijp, Woensel, Tongelre and Stratum. In 1920 Groot-Eindhoven was born, which was created partly to steer the turbulent growth of Philips (which had settled in Eindhoven in 1891) in the right direction. With this book ‘Eindhoven, transformations without a blueprint’, the authors embark on a journey through a hundred years of urban history. Thom Aussems and Hans Horsten outline how Eindhoven grew from an unsightly town on the Dommel to the heart of Philips, one of the largest industrial concerns in the world, and subsequently of the Brainport region with ASML, NXP and VDL, successful companies that symbolize the resurrection of Eindhoven after the decline in the nineties of the last century. The very richly illustrated part 1 with a size of no less than 960 pages describes the history of Eindhoven in the form of many short pieces of text. This book contains many previously unpublished unique images. In part 2, this history is placed in the context of time; what happened in the rest of the Netherlands and the world. Part 2 is the contemplative book that supports part 1.

Thom Aussems was director of the Eindhoven housing association St. Trudo for many years. He was one of the driving forces behind the metamorphosis of Strijp S from a decrepit industrial area of Philips into a new urban district where creativity, design, culture and ‘urban’ lifestyles come together. In recent years, Aussems has regularly published in various media about the city of Eindhoven and its society. Hans Horsten is a journalist. He worked for the ED, Trouw and for many years as an editor-reporter at the Volkskrant. He then established himself as a publicist/ writer. Over the years he wrote several books on various subjects, concerning the city of Eindhoven and its identity. Thom Aussems and Hans Horsten published the book Transformation Strijp S in 2018.

Co-emerging Economies. Exploring radical perspectives on post-anthropocenic economies

ART / DESIGN

edited by Reon Brand en Olga Mink contributions by Godelieve Spaas, Lisanne Buik, René van Peer, Sunjoo Lee, Leif Czakai, Cynthia Hathaway, Elise Talgorn, Bea Xu, Yannik Güldner, Michal Mitro There is an emerging global awareness that our current free-market economic system is responsible for deteriorating environmental health and global warming. This threatens not only future human prosperity but may have existential consequences for all species. The book examines how we can reset our relationship with the planet by re-imagining different socio-economic possibilities. The richly illustrated book contains a mix of essays, reports, stories, poems extracted from a storytelling workshop held with multidisciplinary teams. The publication is structured around a post-anthropocentric view; a perspective where the human identity is diffused into a larger eco-system. The two narratives Gaia and Etheria are the point of departure. In Gaia we see ourselves as an integral part of the natural ecosystem. We look for ways to live integrally embedded within natural biodiverse ecosystems. it creates worldview that puts the health of ecosystems first. In Etheria we value intelligence (sentience) as the ultimate virtue. In Etheria we aspire to become part of a larger post-human (post-biological) intelligence. This view detaches us from nature and the need for any biological systems.

Reon Brand is Design Principal Foresight and Strategic Innovation at Philips Experience Design. He is responsible for gaining understanding of emerging future directions for the Philips Strategic Company Innovation. In June 2019, Brand published his latest research called Co-Emerging Futures, a model which looks at emerging developments in times of profound global challenges. Musings, About Art, Body and Religion

VISUAL ARTS

Multimedia-installations 2000 - 2021

text and images Arent Weevers foreword Aaron Rosen There is more imagination in theology than you might think, and in art you find more traces of God than you might suspect. That is the discovery of media artist and theologian Arent Weevers. For him, art and theology are the two bosoms of one heart. Weevers’ internationally acclaimed interactive installations, 2D and 3D stereoscopic and holographic artworks reflect this journey of discovery. In this book they are discussed in a special way by connoisseurs and critics, and by Weevers himself. Musings provides a deepening and extremely personal insight into the work and motivations of a human-oriented and transcendent-oriented artist.

Arent Weevers exhibits in The Netherlands‑ and abroad, including in Germany, Spain, Argentina, China and the United States. He also works for the Protestant Church in Deventer as a student pastor at the Saxion University of Applied Sciences, and he is a pastor at the Protestant Church in Hengelo.

The book consists of ten chapters on ten works of art. Prof. dr. dr. Aaron Rosen, an American specialist in the field of art and religion, kicks off with a foreword. The chapters are made up of four short articles: an expert’s consideration of a work of art, the ‘how and why’ a particular work of art was created and thematic articles related to the work, such as: care for nature, physicality, suffering, painful beauty, desire, sources of inspiration, relationships and death.

With contributions by Aaron Roosen, Petran Kockelkoren, René Kok, Joost de Wal, Wouter Prins, Annette Doms, Ludger Phanz, Anikó Ouweneel-Tóth, Ingrid de Zwar t and David Dramm.

An American English version of this book will also be published in 2022 entitled Musings, About Art, Body and Religion.

His job forced Richard Reisen to become part of the system for a short while, but for his participatory observation, he maintained sufficient distance. That granted him views of stereotypes that above all reflect the viewers’ expectations. His own visual approach is shaped by curiosity, by the self-assurance of the double role of job and reportage. Three decades later, the situation of refugees and migrants has not improved; instead of in an old hotel, they now live in containers or specially built accommodations. But these are also located on the outskirts, unattractive places of residence that often make it difficult for those living there to reach government offices and workplaces. In this respect, Richard Reisen’s photos are both historical and topical.

H a l f - Way H o u s e S c h i e s s s t r a s s e

More than 30 years after they were made, these pictures are both foreign and close: They are dedicated to a theme that is close to us all – flight and migration – and yet they are so old that many elements of the photos appear as stories and history. We see handwritten entries in a visitors’ book, old-fashioned sliding windows, a cigarette machine – and in general people smoking in all rooms. And yet there are motifs that remain eternally the same: the portraiture next to a car, a person proudly sitting on his own bike, the effortful cooking on a hotplate that is much to small, the long wait next to a running washing machine. The highway in front of the terrace is also still there, along with the view of it from the rooms and balcony. An important motif is killing time: cutting hair, smoking, phoning, hanging around.

In 1989 Richard Reisen worked for several months as a guard in a hostel for asylum-seekers at Schiessstraße 5 in Düsseldorf-Heerdt. He took his camera along, and what he photographed over time fulfills all criteria of what in ethnology and sociology is called “participatory observation.” One becomes part of a certain people, mingles with a social group – and documents what one sees, if possible without reservation, so that it can be evaluated later on. That is precisely what Richard Reisen did: As a night guard, he was part of the photographed system, and yet he was able to capture people, situations and objects as if they had never been seen before.

UEBERGANGSHEIM S CHIESSSTRASSE
