riting this letter is one of the last things I do to complete each month’s issue. I like to wait until I have a grasp of the overall content before I start. The downside is that I then also face a looming print deadline. At times it’s a challenge to churn out something personal and timely under that kind of pressure. Given this month’s theme of Holistic Pets, I found myself struggling to compose an appropriate message because I’ve been mired in missing my four-legged pooch pals, Jane and Elsey, with whom I spent the best part of 17 years. They both passed on about five years ago and I haven’t had the heart to adopt another. Lucky for me, one of our talented editors, Alison Chabonais, who has become a trusted friend and supporter and sometimes helps me to organize my thoughts, gently prodded as to why my March letter had yet to show up on her desk. After we traded brief emails relating personal pet stories, I revisited photos of the two inseparable mutts in my life. And I found my missing spark. Pet owners, also known as guardians, are increasingly turning to natural ways to care for their best friends, as well as themselves. I remember how traumatic it always was to take one of my dogs to the vet, so I really resonated with Erica Pytiovany’s article “A Pet’s First Trip to the Vet,” on page 36, which shares tips on how to lessen the trauma. For those who like to exercise with their dogs, Barbara Amrhein suggests ways to keep it fun and safe (page 46). We are also excited to offer Dr. Shawn Messonnier’s complementary care guides for dogs and cats on pages 40 and 42, created just for us. They are a perfect aid for discussing natural treatment options with your vet. We also spotlight Annemarie Yoder, a local holistic veterinarian pioneer on page 34. Yoder exemplifies the kind of forward-thinking integrative health and wellness care that helps to ensure a long active life for deeply loved furry companions. Special thanks go to Alison for the inspiration she’s provided through the nearly four years we’ve been publishing Natural Awakenings of Lehigh Valley, and for helping me understand that it may be time for me to visit our local shelter to find a new friend that needs a good home. May your days be filled with the unconditional love that pets are always willing to give,
Reid Boyer, Publisher

mmaus Yoga presents a rare opportunity to study yoga with David Williams, the man who brought Ashtanga yoga to the United States. Over four days, from Thursday, March 24 through Sunday, March 27, participants can attend one or an entire series of Ashtanga workshops. The Thursday class, which reviews Williams’ thoughts on how Ashtanga Yoga should be taught and practiced based on his 40 years of daily practice and teaching. This class, he says, is the foundation for all students, and particularly teachers, who want a greater depth of understanding of the “big picture” of the way to practice and teach Ashtanga Yoga. The classes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday build on the foundation class with the history and adventure of yoga as taught by Williams’ mentor K. Pattabhi Jois. Williams has been practicing yoga daily, without interruption, since 1971. In 1973, he began studying Ashtanga yoga with K. Pattabhi Jois at his home in Mysore, India, and became the first nonIndian to be taught the complete Ashtanga yoga system of alignment and breath directly from Jois. Williams is responsible for teaching the Ashtanga Yoga system to many of today’s leading teachers and practitioners. Cost for the full weekend is $300, or $250 if paid two weeks in advance. The Thursday classis $60. Emmaus Yoga is located at 860 Broad Street, Suite 105 in Emmaus. For information call 610-4218200 or visit EmmausYoga.com. Lehigh Valley

efore digging into that next stack of French toast or waffles, pour on some real, pure maple syrup. New research attests to its surprising medicinal value. Scientists at The University of Rhode Island have identified more than 20 compounds in Canadian maple syrup that can be linked to human health—eight of which have been found in the maple family for the first time. It turns out that the syrup contains not only many naturally occurring vitamins and minerals such as zinc, thiamine and calcium, but also substances reported to have anti-bacterial, anti-cancer and antidiabetic properties. Maple syrup is made from the sap located just inside the bark of the sugar maple tree, which is constantly exposed to the sun. Scientists speculate that when the sugar maple is tapped to extract the sap, it secretes phenolics—a beneficial class of antioxidants also found in berries—as a defense mechanism; these wind up in the sap and ultimately concentrate in the syrup, giving this sugary treat its stamp of health.

The Sticky Side of Non-Stick Cookware Compounds in non-stick cookware may be associated with elevated levels of cholesterol in children and teens, according to West Virginia University School of Medicine research published in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. An earlier national survey had found a near universal presence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFOA) in Americans’ blood serum; these chemicals are used in the manufacture of fluoropolymers, which facilitate non-stick heat resistance for cookware and breathable, waterproof properties for clothing fabrics, carpet and upholstery. In the university study, which examined 12,476 Ohio River Valley youth exposed to PFOA-contaminated drinking water, one in five not only had significantly higher PFOA levels than the national average, but relatively higher total cholesterol levels, including LDL (low-density lipoprotein), or “bad cholesterol, as well. More research is needed. Source: JAMA and Archives Journals

lack rice—long a staple food for one-third of the world’s population—is gaining popularity in the United States because of its exotic look and nutty flavor. Now, research chemists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service report that the black variety of this grain may help soothe the inflammation involved in allergies, asthma and other diseases. These health benefits are attributed to its outer bran layer which, unlike with white rice, is not polished off during processing. Collaborating researchers tested the effects of black rice bran extract on skin inflammation in laboratory mice and found that it reduced the inflammation by 32 percent compared to control animals; the rice bran also decreased production of certain substances known to promote inflammation in the body. Brown rice bran extract did not have these effects. When the scientists fed the mice a diet containing 10 percent black rice bran, swelling associated with allergic contact dermatitis, a common type of skin irritation, decreased. These results show a potential value of black rice bran as an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic food ingredient. It may also hold promise as a therapeutic agent for the treatment and prevention of diseases associated with chronic inflammation.

Herbs Alleviate Anxiety
For the first time, scientists have conducted a systematic review of research into the use of nutritional supplements in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Findings by a metastudy team at the nonprofit Global Neuroscience Initiative Foundation show strong evidence that the use of extracts of passionflower or kava or a combination of L-lysine and L-arginine can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety. The next step is to measure effective dosages. Source: BioMed Central

Practical Recycling Tips for Fruit and Veggie Scraps “A rind is a terrible thing to waste, says Jeff Yeager, who refers to himself as the ultimate cheapskate. Yeager has discovered multiple uses for produce rinds and ways to extract extended benefits before they land in the compost pile. Here are a few of his favorites, shared with us during a recent interview: n Jam – Incorporate the skins from a wide variety of fruits— oranges, lemons, grapefruit, limes, tangerines and even kumquats—in easy-to-make marmalades. n Cornhusks – Wrap fish and other seafood in fresh, dampened, sweet corn husks to grill and serve in the husks. n Olive oil infusions – Add citrus peels to olive oil for flavor and to reinvigorate oil that’s getting old. n Savory chicken – Stuff all kinds of fruit and veggie peels inside a free-range chicken before roasting to give it extra flavor. Trimmings from onions, celery, citrus, apples, garlic, etc., can be stuffed in the chicken cavity or sprinkled around the roasting pan. Once baked, the trimmings break down faster in the compost pile. n Easter egg dye – Boil organic Easter eggs with onionskins to naturally create wild yellow and orange eggshells. n Foot rub – Rub papaya skins and pulp on the bottoms of the feet to help soften and soothe skin, particularly on the heels. They’re rich in vitamin A and papain, which breaks down inactive proteins and removes dead skin cells.
& + $ 1 * (
n Hair dye – Boil potato peels in water for about a halfhour, strain and let cool. Rinsing hair with this water after shampooing will gradually darken grey hair without any synthetic chemicals.
n Potpourri – Dry all types of citrus rinds, apple peels, pomegranate skins and other fruit trimmings on a rack or in a food dehydrator to make homemade potpourri. Sprinkle on a little essential oil for more aroma, if desired. n Air freshener – Boil lemon rinds in water on the stovetop, microwave them for a minute, or just throw them in the garbage disposal, in order to freshen the air in the kitchen. Also place a couple in the humidifier to make the whole house smell lemony-fresh. n Shoeshine – Put a “split-shine on leather shoes by polishing them with the slippery side of a banana peel. n Metal polish – Lemon, lime and other citrus rinds and pulp/juice are high in citric acid, which makes them great for polishing brass, copper and other non-ferrous metals. Sprinkle on a little baking soda to hasten polishing (ketchup works, too). n Seedling pots – Scooped-out avocado shells make perfect biodegradable pots to start garden seedlings. n Pest control – Sprinkle ground-up nutshells around tender garden plants to keep slugs and other pests away; they can’t stand crawling across the rough texture (crushed eggshells also work). n Houseplant help – Use banana peels to shine the leaves on houseplants to make them sparkle; this also serves as a natural pesticide and fertilizer. Note: Always thoroughly wash the rinds of produce that will be eaten or come into contact with food, even if it is organically grown. Consciousness Cleanse Three Weeks to a Better Future by Debbie Ford
T
his month is a powerful time to assess where we’ve been, acknowledge where we are right now and dream our most beautiful life into being. Starting now, we can move from the outdated modes of our limited thinking mind to tune into our eternal divine mind. Acting on these three recommended cleansing phases—one a week for the next three weeks—will work to lift us out of resignation and mediocrity into hope and excitement, and connect us with a future filled with surprises, possibility and deep purpose.
Week One: The Past. The first
seven days of what I call The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse are dedicated to creating a powerful magnet of desire and cleaning out the turbulent emotions, outdated beliefs, unresolved incidents and restricting thoughts that have taken root in our minds and hearts. n Write a list of the grudges and resentments you have been carrying around that you are ready to let go. Release them by tearing up the paper into tiny little pieces. n Understanding that your outer world

is a reflection of your inner world, release 100 pieces of clutter from your past that now occupy your home, office and surroundings. Liberated from the confusion, fear, guilt and self-doubt of the past, you will naturally open up to new realms of awareness, emotional freedom and spiritual liberation.
Week Two: The Present. Having
released everything that has depleted your vitality and held you back, stand firmly in the present moment. Take an honest look at where and who you are today, observing what is and is not working in your life.
n Begin an ongoing present-moment awareness practice today. Set an hourly alarm; then, each time it reminds you, become present for five minutes to nature, to your body and breath or to the present moment itself. n Surprise yourself by challenging preconceptions of yourself; take measured risks and do something differently today. In this enhanced sense of the present, you can listen more deeply to the calling of your soul.
Week Three: The Future. In this
final phase, you have the opportunity to look into the future and see who you want to be from this day forward. n Choose a sacred value that can serve as the foundation for your future, such as abundance, compassion, grace or integrity, and surround yourself with images, prayers, songs and scents that invoke it for you. Identify and act on choices that allow you to express that value. n Spend time each morning, afternoon and evening checking in with your natural divine GPS. See if you made wrong turns and find out where that still, small voice wants you to go next. Reconnecting with your highest self, you will experience more love, contentment and compassion as you step into the brilliance of your soul’s purpose. Why not seize this extraordinary opportunity to till the soil of your consciousness and plant the seeds of a whole new future? Coaching for Happiness by Rachel Sue Ritz One of the most frustrating things we can experience is the feeling that we are in the wrong place in life doing a job or activity that has “no juice” for us. It often translates to being a miserable person and a poor employee. Deep down, we often know there is something more fulfilling we should be doing. Some people feel paralyzed, blocked and stuck, and as a result go from job to job and situation to situation. However, life doesn’t need to be a struggle. Imagine living a life full of purpose. Working with a life coach can sometimes help individuals move forward—no more blocks, no more feeling stuck — to help them find what is meaningful and relevant, creating a life that is satisfying, easy and happy. It doesn’t take a lot to learn the skills necessary to discover core values, your true self and identify what has deep meaning and importance. With a few tips, individuals can take the steps necessary to change their life for good. 1. Make a list of everything that is important to you in life, then do your best to list them in order of importance. Once the list is made, take time to reflect on how the current time you spend matches, or doesn’t match, the order of your priorities. If you feel changes are needed, make a commitment, even if it’s a small one, to how you can make that happen. 2. Think positive. Don’t allow the mind to wander or be easily influenced. If negative thoughts enter the mind, allow a few minutes to process those thoughts, then get back to more positive thinking. Remember every problem has a solution and every crisis an opportunity. 3. Have confidence. Make the decision to have faith in yourself. Challenge yourself to overcome certain obstacles, no matter how small, in order to build confidence. We are all stronger and brighter than we think. 4. Write down your successes. Purchase a notebook and write down every accomplishment, achievement and success—no matter how minor you think it may be. You will find that you are much more successful than you give yourself credit. 5. Accept failure. We all must fail in order to succeed. Look at any man or woman who has achieved success and you’ll find failure. Learn from failures and put those lessons to good use. Above all, don’t make it personal. You are not a failure. Move on. Discovering our true self, core values and what has deep meaning and purpose can be very scary. In fact, it can sometimes make us want to stop in our tracks or turn back. However, that’s a normal response any time we change something or try something new. Fear doesn’t need to stop us from moving forward. Picture a bridge. The bridge starts from where you are standing. It extends over a deep ravine (your doubts and fears) to where you want to step to tomorrow. See yourself carrying a basket. In the basket are your purpose and core values. Now walk toward your goals and dreams. It’s easy because you know who you are, what you need to do and where you are going. Rachel Sue Ritz, RN, BA, ACC, offers a free introductory coaching session, individual coaching by phone or in person, group coaching and more. A Good Spring Cleaning Flushes Out Fats and Toxins by Ann Louise Gittleman
S
pring—when the natural world reawakens and bursts with renewed energy—is an ideal season to clean up our act. A cleansing diet to eliminate toxins from our body is as much a rite of spring as sweeping debris from our home. In my nutrition practice, I have often seen how after a sedentary winter of consuming heavier foods, our bodies may be carrying around as much as five
to 10 pounds of toxic wastes. While a properly functioning human body has its own built-in detoxification system, it can be easily overwhelmed by today’s proliferation of environmental toxins. The newest environmental assault on the body’s detox system is electro-pollution, according to research highlighted in the 2007 BioIniative Report, a metastudy of

2,000 peer-reviewed studies compiled by an international group of researchers, scientists and health policy officials. Compounding the problem, Paula Baillie-Hamilton, a British medical doctor specializing in human metabolism, reported in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine that environmental toxins also play havoc with our body’s built-in weight regulation system. In short, the more toxic our body becomes, the harder it is to lose weight.
Detox Equals Weight Loss Clinical research from the University of Quebec as far back as 2002 suggests that toxins slow metabolism. It is widely held that because many toxins are fatsoluble and stored in body fat, as the fat melts away, the toxins are released into the bloodstream; this inhibits the production of thyroid hormone, with a resulting metabolic meltdown. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is the season to support the prime organs of detoxification—the liver and gallbladder. The liver alone impacts some 400 bodily functions, so it deserves support. The following symptoms recommend giving these organs some special care: n Chronic tension in neck and shoulders n Sensitivity beneath the rib cage (particularly the right side) n Feeling tired and sleepy after eating n Nausea, especially after eating fatty foods n Hormonal imbalances with hot flashes due to perimenopause or menopause n Premenstrual irritability and bloating n Light-colored stools n Waking between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
Detox Diet Basics Start off each morning for two weeks (or up to a maximum of two months), with hot lemon water, perhaps spiced with cinnamon and ginger, for an added metabolic boost. The antioxidant Dlimonine in lemon thins bile and is helpful in breaking down fat-trapping toxins. Use the juice of one small lemon to eight ounces of warm water.
Then, sip a total of 64 ounces of cran-water between meals throughout the day. Mix one ounce of unsweetened cranberry juice per seven ounces of pure water. Cranberry helps to balance pH, suppress hunger and combat cellulite and water retention, while drawing out fatty wastes by targeting lymph (a secondary circulatory system beneath the skin that works to rid the body of toxic wastes, bacteria, heavy metals, dead cells, trapped proteins and fat). Sipped daily, this antioxidant- and phenol-rich elixir works to help reduce bloating and melt fat from hips, waist and thighs. Nutrient-rich spring greens like arugula, collard or dandelion greens, lettuce, parsley, spinach, Swiss chard and watercress are classic foods used in a spring detox. Other good choices are antioxidant foods that supply the body with glutathione, the liver’s premier antioxidant, also known as, “the toxic waste neutralizer,” which is vital to organ detoxification. Broccoli sprouts are one of the best sources of glutathione; so is asparagus. Eating lightly steamed kale, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage can also support the liver’s ability to detoxify the body. Finally, eating adequate protein is essential to ensure that the liver can produce the enzymes it needs to break down toxins into water-soluble substances for excretion. Protein plays a crucial role in tissue growth and healing, strengthening the immune system and burning fat. Eat at least 4 to 6 ounces of wild salmon, free-range organic poultry or hemp protein each day during detox. Choosing a daily dose of high-quality glutathioneboosting whey protein powder or a brown rice/yellow pea protein powder is another way to pump up the detox process. Such spring cleaning can help purge our body of toxins and give our whole system the cleansing boost it needs, simultaneously preparing it for even more healthy weight loss in coming months. Planet Earth has Energy in Store for Us By Alex Bodian Geothermal energy is the most earth-friendly and energy efficient home heating and cooling system available today. The first Geothermal system was installed in 1943 and the technology grew rapidly in the 1990s. Geothermal systems offer an immediately available technology for energy production and they use less energy and consume fewer natural resources than any other alternative energy system. They keep the air clean and fresh. There’s no flame, no flue, no odor and no pollutants in your home or in our environment. Because the technology uses existing energy from the ground, geothermal is also the most cost effective heating and cooling system to operate. It can operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - at night, in the rain, wind or no wind. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy have identified geothermal as the most efficient alternative energy source. The basic premise of Geothermal is that the temperature of the earth is relatively stable compared to the temperature of the air which is more variable. Like a cave, the ground temperature is warmer than the air above during the winter and cooler than the air in the summer. The technical name for a geothermal system is ground source heat pump (GSHP). A ground source heat pump draws heat from the ground in the winter (for heating) and sends heat into the ground during the summer (for cooling). This is accomplished by pumping a fluid through pipe loops that have been buried in the ground. During the winter, the fluid pumped through the ground loops is cooler than the ground and so absorbs heat from the ground and transports it back to your house. The GSHP then produces either conditioned air for ducted heating (or cooling during the summer) or heated water for radiant heating.
What is a heat pump? Heat pumps include air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers and etc. All of these appliances use refrigerant to move heat from one place to another. The key component is a compressor which is driven by an electric motor to compress cool gas into a hot liquid. Because this unique cycle can produce both heat and cold, each of those heating and cooling cycles can be used to either heat or cool your home with the same system. 30 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com
A properly designed ground-source heat pump can supply three to four units of ground heat to your home for every unit of electrical energy required to operate the system. So you get two to three units of free energy for every unit of electrical energy you pay to operate the system’s motor, fan and etc. In other words, a ground-source heat pump is 300% to 400% efficient. How does this compare with other fuels? The chart below shows the dominant fuel types and
ranks them by cost per million btus. A btu (British Thermal Unit) is a standard unit of heat. GSHP systems cost half as much to operate as air source heat pumps. So, if heating and cooling a 2500-3000sq. ft. house costs $2000 per year with an air source heat pump, a GSHP will cost around $1000 per year. If a home is heating with oil, the difference could be greater to the benefit of GSHP. Even though the unit costs above may vary, you can calculate your own differences based on the energy costs you may currently be paying.
Typical Configurations for Ground Source Heat Pump Systems The ground loop component accounts for a third to a half of the total system installation cost. There are several different configurations for GSHP systems – closed loop or open loop, then either vertical or horizontal ground installations (even a pond can be used). Open loop systems utilize two wells (vertical application) and underground water. Water from one well is pumped through the heat pump, then returned to a second well or discharged into a pond. (Open loop systems do not qualify for the Federal 30% tax credit.) Closed loop systems are the most common installation type, in this configuration, water or water with a diluted antifreeze solution is circulated through plastic pipes buried beneath the earth’s surface in a continuous loop – the heat transfer fluid is never discharged. These can be either vertical or horizontal.
In a horizontal closed-loop ground heat exchanger, a water/ antifreeze mixture is circulated through sealed plastic pipe loops buried horizontally, about five feet underground. A trenched system needs a fair amount of clear land away from buried utilities, septic systems, free of big boulders and at least 10 feet above bedrock. A horizontal application uses a 5ft deep trench which is around 100 ft long. A typical house may require 3-5 trenches.
The choice of vertical or horizontal system depends on available land areas, soil and rock type at the installation site and local zoning policies. Both will do the same job. It is a matter of geography and geology that would determine which would be best for any property. In a vertical closed-loop ground heat exchanger, a water/ antifreeze mixture is circulated through sealed plastic pipe loops buried in vertical bore holes. The bore holes are typically 150 to 250 feet deep. A typical house may require 2-3 boreholes.
Incentives, Costs & Payback Ground Source Heat pumps are eligible for a Federal 30% tax credit. This 30% may be applied to the entire installation. If you have a GSHP installed along with a whole house duct system, if done together, the entire project qualifies for the credit. The 30% credit is scheduled to end 12/31/2016. There is no maximum credit. If a GSHP installation costs $24,000 to install, the tax credit would be $7200. The final installed cost, after credit, would be $16,800. Typical home installations, where the home has existing ductwork, could cost $20,000 to $30,000. The period of time required to return the extra costs of a GSHP with energy cost savings is referred to as the payback. Typical payback for GSHP systems can range from 3 to 10 years. Of course, as the cost of energy increases, the payback period will diminish. Properly installed GSHP systems are robust. Equipment in the home is usually warranted for 10 years and the ground loop for 50 years. Property value is increased with GSHP as well because at least a third to half of the investment is good for at least 50 years. Alex Bodian is an IGSHPA Accredited Designer & Installer and President of Teratherm Geothermal. He is also the Director of the Lehigh Valley Green Builders. He can be reached at 610-346-1965.

Chiropractors: Beyond the Typical Alignment

hiropractic is a natural form of health care with a rich history. Spinal manipulation, chiropractic’s primary treatment, is used instead of drugs or surgery to promote the body’s natural healing process. However, the role of chiropractor has evolved. More than just offering spinal adjustments, the chiropractor has become a Functional Medicine Provider. According to The Institute

of Functional Medicine, functional medicine is a personalized approach to healthcare that deals with the underlying causes of illness and disease rather than simply just treating the symptoms. Through functional medicine, providers can get to the root cause of chronic conditions by focusing on each person’s unique needs, biochemical makeup and metabolic functions. No two people are the same, so by considering the genetic and environmental differences in all people, functional medicine practitioners are better equipped to determine what’s wrong. By keying in on treatment protocols like nutritional response testing, allergy elimination, and the combination of acupuncture and chiropractic, chiropractors are making a measurable difference in the health of our community.
Nutrition Response Testing Wouldn’t it be nice if we could ask our body exactly what it needs and it would answer back? That is what Nutritional Response Testing does. Chiropractors can test the body for specific deficiencies without needles or other invasive means to uncover what may be robbing individuals of their energy. Dr. Merlin Haas of Alternative Health Care in South Allentown, says anything from food sensitivities, metal and chemical toxicity, immune challenges, or weak glands or organs can be identified with this test. Haas says proper nutrition plays a crucial part overall health. “You make your energy and electricity for your body out of the food you eat, so you first have to look at what you are eating. He explains that this is why a virus lasts a week for one person but may last two months for the next. Once the practitioner knows what is going on in the body, he or she can give individualized advice. Some people may benefit from all natural products while others may get a rash. Health problems like high blood pressure can be linked to what someone eats so it is often advised to write down what you eat for a few
www.healthylehighvalley.com
Nutritional Response Testing with Dr. Haas weeks to find out what could be causing the problem. After that, nutritional response testing takes place. “The patient lies down and we test the strength of the arm as we expose them to a series of substances. If the arm muscles go weak, we know what substance is the culprit and then can recommend a nutritional solution. explains Haas. Haas sees his own mother as a testament that nutrition matters. When he started practicing 35 years ago, his mother was diagnosed with cancer and told that she had only six months to live but, after giving her different herbs and making dietary changes, she survived seven more years.
Allergy Elimination Some chiropractors perform acupressure, which is similar to acupuncture but instead of using needles, manual manipulation of pressure points is used. “The emphasis is to remove or get the energy flowing again more efficiently so the body can heal, explains Dr. Eric Herman of Liberty Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Allentown. Because chiropractors do not treat symptoms, but instead seek to find the root of the problem, relief care is offered when someone is treated for pain. “The symptom is just a warning signal that there is a problem. I hunt for the underlying cause that will help the body heal, says Herman. Herman says there are three premises that can cause a person to be ill in the holistic approach of treating the whole person. “They can be out of balance physically or structurally; be deficient in something their body needs; or they are exposed or ingesting some-

Looking for an alternative to help make her patients more comfortable, she decided to try acupuncture. She traveled to Texas one weekend per month for four months to take the basic veterinary acupuncture course taught by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). The curricula of the course integrated a balanced background of the fundamentals of the scientific basis and application of acupuncture as well as a background in the fundamentals and applications of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. After earning her certification, she began using the modality on her patients—mostly small animals. Although demand for acupuncture services wasn’t high at the time, pet owners appreciated any relief provided to their beloved pets. Over the years, Yoder has seen an increase in the demand, as the public is becoming more aware of the numerous benefits acupuncture can provide to a pet. According to The American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture in Colorado, acupuncture can treat ailments ranging from hip dysplasia and chronic degenerative joint disease to respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological and urinary tract disorders. Once inside, have your dog’s favorite treats and special toy at hand to help keep him distracted and happy. Engage him to keep his attention on you, and do not allow him to visit with other dogs without express permission from the other owner. Dogs in the waiting room could be contagious, sore or simply not comfortable greeting other dogs in a confined space. Protect your dog from an unpleasant interaction that could color future visits. The Visit for Cats: For comfort and safety, first introduce the cat to a secure carrier at home. Feeding the cat meals inside the carrier for a few weeks before the visit will make it feel more like a place of safety than a place of confinement. You can also leave a small towel or mat on her usual sleeping place for a few days before the vet trip. For the visit to the vet, place it in the carrier along with her, so that it smells like home. Alternative Therapies: If a pet is particularly anxious during veterinary visits, try two alternative therapies reported to make a big difference. Rescue Remedy is a popular liquid homeopathic treatment sold at many pet supply shops and at health stores that carry Bach Flower Remedies. Apply four drops directly in the pet’s mouth or add it to water, food or a treat. Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) and Feliway are synthetic pheromone products that mimic those which a mother releases when nursing her pups or kittens and are designed to cause a relaxation response from the pet. These products come in different forms, including a dispenser for spraying a pet’s collar or the inside of the carrier. By conscientiously preparing your pet for a first visit to a veterinarian when the animal is healthy and not in need of vital medical attention, you lay the foundation for future experiences that you both can look forward to with a great deal more ease. For more information on Bach Flower Remedies, visit BachFlower.com/Pets. htm. For more information about Dog Appeasing Pheromone search “pheromoneâ€? at BarkleyAndPaws.com; for cats visit Feliway.com/us.

dal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) that provide relief from pain and inflammation, laser therapy does not pose serious side effects for the liver or kidneys, nor is it painful or typically require sedation. Because it promotes cellular activity and increases blood flow, laser therapy should not be used on tumors or pre-surgical sites where it could be detrimental.

one size does not fit all. Initially, a laser therapy session will begin with a thorough physical examination and radiographs, if indicated, to ascertain the extent of the injury or condition, and develop an individualized plan to return a pet to a heightened state of wellness. For instance, a pet suffering from degenerative arthritis that is experiencing great discomfort in walking may initially be treated for five to 10 minutes every two or three days for a few weeks. As the pet’s situation improves, the frequency of the sessions may decrease to once weekly, and then every two weeks, until the pet receives a laser treatment on a monthly basis. For chronic conditions, laser therapy may not cure the pet, but it will help alleviate its discomfort. For more acute
situations, such as a hot spot or a sprain, the animal may be treated for three to five minutes every three days over a 10-day period. A pet that has recently undergone invasive surgery, such as an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament, or connective knee tissue) repair or tumor removal, may be treated just minutes after the sutures are closed, to promote circulation, stimulate nerve cells and boost collagen production, reducing healing time. Over the next seven to 10 days, the pet may receive a laser treatment every few days until the skin around the incision is less inflamed. Results of laser therapy treatments are cumulative, but most pet owners report significant improvement after two to four sessions. An article in the Newark Post, in Delaware, quoted pet owner Cricket Barazotto as saying, “I was desperate to get [my dog] Clare out of pain. It was hard for her to walk through our neighbor-
hood. But after the first week of laser therapy, she started jumping back up on our bed.” Pet owners who previously relied upon more traditional means of relieving inflammation or pain, such as drugs, prescription diets for skin allergies and other types of palliative care, are often surprised by the affordability and availability of laser therapy. Treatment costs vary by location, generally ranging from $50 to $75 a session. To find an area veterinarian that uses non-surgical laser therapy, visit the websites of the two main manufacturers: K-LaserUSA.com/locator/ locator/index.php and Companion TherapyLaser.com/Pages/pet-owners. This federally approved safe and effective technology delivers results, increasing mobility, accelerating wound healing and decreasing pain. To see if a family pet could benefit from laser therapy, contact a veterinarian to discuss the best application of this innovative approach. Dr. Matthew J. PURRING O FOR PROTEIN Why Canned Food is Best for Cat Health by Dr. Lisa Pierson
Just as with humans, diet comprises the bricks and mortar of health for our pets. Unfortunately, as we have strayed from a healthy diet, so have the feline friends that are dependent upon us for their food.

www.healthylehighvalley.com
ften ignored principles of proper feline nutrition explain why cats have a better chance at optimal health if they are fed canned food instead of dry nuggets or kibble. Putting a little thought into what we feed our cats can pay big dividends over their lifetime and likely help them avoid experiencing serious, painful and costly illnesses. To begin, it is vital to understand that cats are obligate (strict) carnivores, and are very different from dogs in their nutritional requirements. Cats are designed to have their nutritional needs met by the consumption of a large amount of animal proteins (meat/ organs), instead of those found in plants
(grains/vegetables). Plant proteins are less complete than meat proteins. A wild cat’s diet typically consists of rodents, birds, rabbits, lizards and insects. Such natural feline prey are high in animal protein, high in water content (about 70 percent) and low in carbohydrates (less than 5 percent). Most canned foods are of similar proportions. Now, consider three key negative issues associated with dry cat food: 1) as a protein source, it’s too high in plant (grain or vegetable) protein and too low in animal protein; 2) the water content is far too low, at just 5 to 10 percent; and 3) its carbohydrate load is too high, as much as 50 percent. This is not what is needed to support a healthy animal.
Protein Puzzle Humans and dogs can take the amino acids provided in plant proteins and, from those, produce any missing amino acids normally provided by animal proteins. Cats cannot do this, and so cannot live on a vegetarian diet. That is why the protein in dry cat food, which is often heavily grain-based, is not equal in quality to the protein in canned cat food, which is meat-based. The protein in dry food, therefore, earns a lower score in terms of biological value. Many pet food companies use grain proteins, such as corn, wheat, soy and rice, which are cheaper ingredients than meat proteins, because this practice contributes to a higher profit margin.
dry diet. The fact that urinary tract problems are common in cats, and often life-threatening, underscores the importance of keeping water flowing through the kidneys and bladder, which is critical to the health of this organ system.
Carb Load The high carbohydrate load of dry cat food wreaks havoc on the blood sugar balance of many cats because they lack the necessary enzyme systems to efficiently process carbohydrates. This comes as no surprise, given a cat’s strict carnivore status. While some cats are able to handle elevations in blood sugar levels, many are not, and this can contribute to the development of diabetes. In the 20th century, dry kitten
Lisa Pierson is a doctor of veterinary medicine based in Lomita, CA. For more information on how to make the switch to a healthier diet, see the “Transitioning Dry Food Addicts to Canned Food at CatInfo.org.
4MIZV ?PI\ <PMa 0I^M \W ;Ia
Water for Life Water, too, is vital to life and it also plays a critical role in the health of a cat’s urinary tract. Cats, by nature, have an extraordinarily low thirst drive and are designed to obtain water as part of their food. People who feed their cat dry food think that the animal is consuming enough water, because they see it drinking from a water bowl, but cats do not make up their water deficit this way. We can think of wet food, packaged in cans or pouches, which is a minimum of 75 percent water (approximating that of a cat’s normal prey), as working to flush out the cat’s internal plumbing several times each day, because such a water-rich diet produces much more urine than a water-depleted
and cat food attracted a huge following due to its convenience and affordability, but informed and caring owners now realize that wet cat food is a far more healthy choice. Veterinarians and enlightened consumers understand that a core principle of nutrition is: pay more for good food now or pay the doctor later. This principle applies to our pets, as well as to us. Finally, no discussion of dry versus canned food would be complete without addressing the myth that dry food is good for a cat’s teeth. In fact, this old tale has no basis in reality.

Buy a good leash. A leash is a non-negotiable piece of equipment. Best Friends trainer Mark Renick recommends using a six-foot lead for running. “It’s long enough so that you won’t step on your dog, but short enough so you can keep him under control, he advises. Use this leash just for jogging and your dog will soon connect it with running, rather than strolling while sniffing every tree or lamppost.
Practice obedience skills. “Sit, stay, come, and “heel are commands that need to be in a dog’s working vocabulary. If they aren’t, enroll in an obedience course before hitting the pavement or trails.
Start slowly. Begin each session with a walking warmup. For the first few weeks, alternate jogging/running with lots of walking. “Start younger, middle-aged and overweight dogs on a moderate program of walking 10 to 15 minutes once or twice a day, advises Howard Erickson, professor of physiology at Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Then, gradually add distance, as both partners build endurance. End each session with additional walking as a cool-down.
Be safe. Always keep these guidelines in mind: • Don’t run with a dog just before he eats or after he has eaten. • Face oncoming traffic; this puts a heeling dog on your left, away from cars or bikes. • Check paw pads for signs of irritation or bleeding. Pavement is hard on a dog’s feet; grass and dirt are kinder. Summer-hot asphalt and concrete can burn sensitive feet, and snow can cause frostbite. • Carry water for both of you, and offer some every 20 minutes. • Watch for signs of overheating, such as heavy panting or salivating, and stop immediately if you observe these, cooling your pet slowly with cool, not cold, water. The best times to exercise are early morning or evening.

• Don’t jog daily; canine muscles and joints, too, need to rest and recuperate. Fitness is more fun when a buddy’s along and the health benefits abound. Learn more at AVMA.org and RunThePlanet.com/trainingracing/ training/dogs.

Don’t overdo. The Surgeon General recommends that for optimal health, people exercise 150 minutes each week at moderate intensity. The AVMA reports that “Dogs will exercise past the point of exhaustion to please a beloved companion, and advises us to be sensitive to their health and comfort.

A Time To Align: Anusara Yoga for Pregnancy by Sue Elkind
O
ne of the first things an Anusara® yoga teacher learns is to look for the beauty in students before adjusting posture. We are trained to see the body as a ‘temple that houses the Divine’ and to make physical, therapeutic adjustments to enhance the light that was already present. It is a life-affirming attitude that continues to inspire and help set the tone for students to step more fully into their hearts. In prenatal yoga, this complimentary philosophy toward pregnancy and the Universal Principles of AlignmentTM support a woman and allow her to more confidently step into her potential while relieving her aches and pains. For over a decade now, I have used the principles and practices of Anusara Yoga as a foundation to empower women throughout all stages of pregnancy. On the deepest level, the philosophy encourages a woman to trust in her greater connection to the Universe and to remember that the currents of Grace are always guiding her to be in her heart. On the physical level, the Universal Principles of AlignmentTM work seamlessly to strengthen and align the body so she feels more comfortable and confident during her uncertain journey into birth and motherhood. A regular yoga practice can help to reduce swelling and inflammation around the joints, promoting circulation of blood and oxygen throughout the body. As the baby grows in the womb, the fluid movements of yoga support both healthy digestion and regularity. Through optimally aligning the physical body, the hips open, the lower back is supported and the pelvic floor muscles tone, better preparing a woman for both labor and physical birth. Through connecting to the breath, a woman learns to deeply relax and tune in to the natural rhythms inside— reducing anxiety and stress. Pregnancy is the only time when two heartbeats (mother and child) share one breath, therefore, through the breath, the mother can consciously communicate her innermost feelings to her baby. The more 48 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com
lovingly a woman brings her awareness to the breath, the more it naturally expands and relaxes into both her and her baby. Things to remember for women practicing prenatal yoga: • Keep the breath smooth and even—avoid holding the breath. • Always create space for the baby—use props when necessary. • Never push or force a pose. • Keep feet at least hip width apart. • Take as many breaks as needed. • Strength over flexibility — keep back muscles strong. • Maintain good alignment. • Keep water nearby, rest, take bathroom breaks when needed. What to avoid: • • • • •
Jumping in or out of poses. Low back twists, anything closing the belly. Abdominal crunches. Overstretching. Arm balances that ‘grip’ the abdomen or create less space in the belly. • Forward bends that compress the belly. • Lying flat on the back after the 4th month. Poses to be cautious of: • Inversions should not be done with new students to yoga. Experienced practitioners should consider avoiding inversions during weeks 10-13. • Backbends can overstretch ligaments and abdominals and destabilize the sacrum. • Pigeon—this deep hip opener can strain the groins and cause sacral shifts. • Balancing poses that may create instability. Use the wall to avoid falling. It is important for women to remember there is no ‘right’ way to be pregnant or to give birth. Just as each person is unique in their own way, so too is every pregnancy. Yoga teaches us to celebrate both our diversity and commonality. Sue Elkind is a nationally renowned certified Anusara® yoga teacher that has been featured on the Crunch fitness prenatal yoga video, Yoga Mama, and inFit Pregnancy, W Magazine, and Spa magazine. She is the author of A Time To Align: an Anusara Yoga Guide for Teachers, Students and New Moms, and holds Anusara yoga workshops, immersions, teacher trainings, and classes at DIG Yoga, her studio in Lambertville, N.J., as well as nationally and internationally. Elkind and her family live in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Elkind will be offering an Anusara Yoga Prenatal Training for teachers seeking to teach prenatal yoga and for pregnant students on April 15-17 at Kula Heart Yoga in Nazareth.
