Natural Iodine Supplementation A Must for Most Americans

W

e all need iodine, yet most of us don’t get enough of it through our diet. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that iodine deficiency in the developed world has increased fourfold in the past 40 years and now affects nearly three-quarters of all adults. Numerous U.S. practicing physicians quoted widely in the media estimate that the incidence of hypothyroidism in our adult population may be between 30 and 70 percent. Thus, we can’t efficiently produce the thyroid hormones that serve as chemical messengers triggering nearly every bodily function. The presence or absence of iodine affects our every cell. Natural Awakenings Detoxifed Iodine is 100 percent natural, raw iodine in an ethyl alcohol solution. We thank all those that are benefiting from this product and enthusiastically telling us their great results.  Available only at NAWebstore.com 

deafness, attention deficient and hyperactivity disorder and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University, China’s Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and France’s National Academy of Medicine. The answer is simple: Taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage can rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the thyroid and the whole body.

Reasons Behind Iodine Deficiency Radiation: Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation emitted by cell phones, Wi-Fi, microwave ovens and other electronic devices. Iodized table salt: The human body cannot utilize the iodide added to this product. Low-sodium diets: Failure to use healthy salts to fulfill sodium requirements, plus over-

My wife, who suffered from extreme fatigue and other symptoms, saw a dramatic increase in energy after just a few days of taking the natural iodine drops. Now if she misses a day, she’ll end up falling asleep in the middle of the afternoon, like she used to do before taking the iodine. It works! ~ Aaron My doctor told me that I had a hypothyroid condition, prescribed medication and was happy with the follow-up test results, yet I noticed no positive effects on my overall wellbeing. Within two weeks of using the Natural Awakenings Detoxified Iodine, I had more energy, felt more awake and enjoyed clearer thinking and greater peace of mind. People even comment that I look younger. I am a fan! ~ Larry

Be Aware of Hypothyroidism Symptoms Low thyroid function, or hypothyroidism, is the most recognized and obvious indicator of low iodine intake because the thyroid gland contains more concentrated iodine than other organs. Symptoms can range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and a variety of skin and hair problems. Hypothyroidism can further cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers. In children, insufficient iodine has beenLehigh stronglyValley linked with mental retardation, 2 www.healthylehighvalley.com

use of zero-nutrient table salt in foods, leads to iodine depletion. Bromine: This toxic chemical overrides iodine’s abilities to nourish the thyroid, adrenal and other hormone-producing glands. A known carcinogen, it is used as an anticaking ingredient found in almost all baked goods, unless the ingredients specifically cite unbromated flour. Iodine-depleted soils: Due to poor farming techniques, iodine and other minerals in soil have declined, so most foods today are devoid of naturally occurring iodine. Proper iodine supplementation with a high-quality product like Natural Awakenings Detoxified Iodine can prevent harm by protecting the thyroid and other endocrine glands and restoring proper hormone production.

A Few Drops Can Change Your Life! You could feel better, lose weight or increase energy and mental clarity with a few drops of Natural Awakenings’ DetoxifieD ioDine daily in water or on your skin when used as directed. An essential component of the thyroid, iodine replacement has been reported to give relief from: • Depression • Fibromyalgia • Hypothyroidism • Radiation

• Weight Gain • Low Energy • Hyperthyroidism • Bacteria & Viruses

his month’s issue focuses on the dual themes of CancerFree Living and Healthy Families, which in my view go hand in hand. When we focus on making sure our family is doing the right things to stay healthy, we not only reduce the risk of cancer but are more resilient and prepared to handle all health issues that arise.

It is vital to have a healthy mind and spirit in place when involved in battling disease, whether for our self or a loved one. Each year, more than 572,000 Americans die of cancer; about one-third of these deaths are linked to diet, physical inactivity and carrying too much weight. I continually aim to take these factors off the table as I aspire to maintain my best health and age gracefully. According to Cancer.org, other than quitting smoking, which is a biggie, here are three key things we can do to reduce the risk of cancer. rank Arjava Petter, vice-chairman of the Jikiden Reiki Institute in Kyoto Japan and author of 7 bestselling books on the origins of Reiki will have book signings for This Is Reiki, his most recent book, at the Allentown Spiritual and Holistic Fair, September 21 at 2 p.m. and at the Circle of Miracles in the Doylestown area on September 30, 6:30 p.m. He will teach Jikiden Reiki, Shoden and Okuden for five days, September 22-26 in Wilmington, Delaware. Jikiden Reiki is a distinctly Japanese form of Reiki taught directly by Chujiro Hayashi to the Yamaguchi family with no western ties. Petter also offers a Family Constellation Therapy weekend September 27-29 in Wilmington. This group therapeutic process, now popular in the U.S. for personal growth, brings healing to the energy field of the family and to participants. Petter will facilitate a number of “constellations” based on issues identified by participants. In a constellation, group members are chosen in an intuitive way to stand in for significant members of the participant’s family. The process aims to disclose the ancestral pattern that has been manifesting as a troublesome issue. Laser Fungus Toenail Treatment

A

ccording to the American Academy of Dermatology, fungal infections cause about half of all nail disorders. They are more common in toenails because the toes often are confined to a warm, moist, weightbearing environment. Twin Rivers Podiatry uses lasers to kill fungus while leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. The laser used in toenail fungus treatment doesn’t affect surrounding tissue, so there is no pain, side effects, adverse reactions or complications. The FDA-approved treatment is an alternative to prescription medications and the in-office procedure is safe, effective and virtually painless with no downtime from your regular activities. Location: 1901 Hay Terrace in Easton. For more information or appointments, visit TwinRiversPodiatry-Easton.com or call 610-253-2251, See ad, page 5. natural awakenings

Free Health Lectures from Dr. Maulfair

L

orld-renowned teacher David Keil will offer a five-day traditional Ashtanga Mysore Yoga Intensive in two sessions at 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. each day from August 31 to September 4, at Lehigh Valley Yoga, in Allentown. There is also a weekend workshop for yoga teachers and students that includes Observing and Assisting and Common Yoga Injuries: Prevention and Rehab. Keil states, “Self-practice is what yoga is all about. Yoga, for thousands of years, has been taught from teacher to student on a one-to-one basis, taking a student through his or her own development at an appropriate pace. This method is still used in Mysore, India, where the guru of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga teaches in this method.” Students each practice at their own pace, without being guided through each pose by the teacher throughout the class. It’s not a led or guided class, where everyone is doing the same pose at the very same moment. Everyone still does the same poses, just at his or her own pace. This allows for a deeper connection to develop between the teacher, the student and the practice. Location: 1701 Union Blvd. For more information, call 610-776-2676 or visit LVYoga.com. ehigh Valley Magazine readers have selected Dr. Conrad Maulfair as the Best of the Valley alternative medical specialist for 2013. He will present a series of three seminars in August. All begin at 6:30 p.m. On August 13, Maulfair will discuss problems of aging, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and lack of energy. On August 20, the topic is the role of digestion and all it means for overall health and well-being. On August 27, Coleen Maulfair will talk about the underlying causes of health problems and symptoms, including toxins and their impact on health. “Your health problem is not a demand by the body for a medical drug; it is a warning that something is amiss,” states Maulfair. “Instead of matching symptoms to the latest drug recommendation he finds out what is really going on, saying, “Depressed? What is your vitamin D level? Tired out? That is a long list, including hormone status and dietary problems, or sometimes Lyme disease. Chronic problems are an indication that you are toxic or you are missing something essential for health.” Maulfair Medical Center Conference Room is located at 2970 Corporate Ct., Ste. 1, Orefield, PA. Never Too Old to Quit

E

ven smokers 60 and over can live longer if they quit, according to a 2012 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Three experts from the German Cancer Research Center, in Heidelberg, analyzed 17 studies from the United States, Australia, China, England, France, Japan and Spain that followed groups of between 863 and 877,243 people for periods ranging from three to 50 years. Findings showed that the longer a person had been classified as a former, rather than current, smoker, the more their risk of premature death decreased. The researchers also observed that current smokers showed the highest absolute mortality rates in all the studies. Dr. Tai Hing Lam, of the University of Hong Kong, observes that for people in their 60s, quitting was linked to a 21 percent decrease in the risk of premature death. The risk was reduced by 27 percent for those in their 70s and by 24 percent for individuals in their 80s. Lam added that the World Health Organization’s statistic that one out of every two smokers will die from their habit should be printed on all cigarette packages, “…so that all smokers know they are betting their lives on the toss of a coin.”

T

he Manchester Guardian reports that childbirth experts in the United Kingdom are urging the National Health Service (NHS) to reverse its policy on early clamping and cutting of a newborn’s umbilical cord. A recent Swedish study of 400 full-term infants from low-risk pregnancies published in the British Medical Journal found that delayed cord-clamping at birth resulted in infants being 5 percent less likely of being anemic two days later or iron deficient four months later. The latter problem has been associated with impaired brain development. The practice of separating infants from the placenta within 10 seconds of delivery has been commonplace since the 1960s, as supported by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which advises the NHS. However, several doctors, medical organizations and the nonprofit National Childbirth Trust (NCT), plus the World Health Organization, disagree; they advocate leaving the placenta untouched for at least 30 seconds up to whenever it stops pulsating naturally (usually between two to five minutes). Exceptions would be if the baby’s or mother’s health necessitates medical intervention. “At birth, about a third of the baby’s blood is still in his or her cord and placenta,” explains Belinda Phipps, NCT chief executive. Unfortunately, “It is still accepted practice to deprive the baby of this blood.”

Local Naturopath Establishes Protocol for Morgellons Disease

M

orgellons disease, or Morgellons syndrome, is sometimes classified either as a parasitic disease or a psychological condition. The symptoms are crawling sensations under the skin that feel like bugs working through the extracellular matrix to the epidermis. There are at times hair-like fibers or clusters of parasites pulled out through the process of itching and picking at the skin. Healthcare providers tell many sufferers that it is a phobia to bugs and are prescribed anti-psychotic or antidepressant medications. In the Journal of The American Association of Integrated Medicine, Easton Naturopath Debra Dallas, Ph.D., outlines the physical findings of Morgellons syndrome clients and a structured protocol comprised of formulating a diet to meet their individual needs; providing the body with proper restorative supplements and homeopathic remedies; and cleansing the body. Recovery cannot be accomplished by eliminating any one of the elements listed in the protocol. Dallas worked with Morgellons patients that have celiac disease and must strictly adhere to a gluten-free diet and their genetic blood type diet. She states, “By healing the gut and eliminating the leaky gut, the liver is able to heal and restore its proper function of breaking down fibrin to eliminate the accumulation in the blood. Supplements that are beneficial for recovery are probiotics, digestive enzymes, and large and small intestines homeopathic remedy.” She noted a significant improvement using the protocol, saying, “The probiotics restores a healthy balance in the gut of fungus and bacteria, digestive enzymes ensure that the food ingested is properly digested, andisthe This ad thehomeopathic property of remedy Natural enAwakenings and may not be reproduced in any oth keep the body in good courages the healing of the intestinal tract, sosion foodofmolecules, fats, bacteria, fungusthe proof To the publisher. The protein is also involved in the cellular metabolism of fat, a key component of breast milk, suggesting that induction of UCP2 by natural birth may aid the transition to breastfeeding. healthbriefs Cinnamon Showdown —Ceylon versus Cassia

C

innamon is an alkaline ash spice that can help offset the acid ash property of protein powders, making it ideal for use in organic smoothies. Those that have recognized the beneficial properties of cinnamon may blithely pick up a bottle at the grocery store, never realizing that there are two distinctly different varieties, with quite different characteristics. Unfortunately, in the United States, the lower quality type of cinnamon is more common. “Real” cinnamon (Ceylon, or cinnamomum verum) is the predominant cinnamon sold in Europe and it’s considered a finer quality cinnamon due to its sweeter, more delicate and complex flavor. The supermarket variety (Cassia, or cinnamomum cassia), has a stronger, more pungent flavor and is the most prevalent variety in the U.S. Both varieties come from the fragrant inner bark of a group of small tropical evergreen trees and will stimulate salvation, treat indigestion and reduce flatulence. Either can be used as an expectorant suitable for coughs and bronchitis; and will attack the bacteria that causes bad breath when chewed. Cassia has fewer healthy applications, such as boosting brain function. A 2004 study indicated that participants’ performance on tasks involving virtual recognition memory, attention processes, working memory and visual-motor speed while using a computer were enhanced after smelling true cinnamon’s sweet aroma. In native ayurvedic medicine, Ceylon cinnamon is considered a remedy for respiratory, digestive, and gynecological ailments. In addition to flavor, a critical difference between “true” Ceylon cinnamon and the lower quality cassia cinnamon the content of coumarin, a naturally occurring plant toxin with strong anticoagulant/blood thinning properties. The coumarin level in real Ceylon cinnamon is negligibly small, while that in Chinese Cassia cinnamon is 1,200 times higher. Chinese Cassia cinnamon is used as an active ingredient in rat poison. Another component, cinnamaldehyde, is mainly used as a flavoring agent or as a scent for candles. It is non-toxic, but can irritate skin if in contact for too long. As with many components of essential oils, cinnamaldehyde displays antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. To be sure, there are significant differences in the types of cinnamon sold in the U.S. Healthy shoppers might want to do some extra legwork to procure the good stuff. Shifting Priorities

A Dose of Awe Can Make a Teen More Caring A meta-analysis published in the Personality and Social Psychology Review suggests that experiencing awe helps young people focus less on themselves and more on the world around them. Exposure to natural wonders and accounts of great human accomplishments can do the trick. It’s a helpful strategy, given that narcissism is on the rise and college students have become dramatically less empathetic over the years, particularly since 2000. Sixty-four percent of respondents ages 18 to 25 surveyed thought getting rich is their most important goal, while only 30 percent believed that helping others in need is important. Awe humbles us in the presence of something greater than ourselves. Experiencing it during adolescence, a period crucial in the formation of self-identity, could help coax teens out of their, “I am the center of the world,” funk and put them on a path to a life lived in compassionate connection with others. High-Tech Teachers

Students Use Smartphones to Study Highlighting the potential for digital learning, a new survey by the Verizon Foundation has found that a third of middle school students are already using mobile apps on smartphones to do schoolwork and collaborate with peers on projects. Beyond accessing information via the Internet, students often turn to free apps to play games that help them master math concepts, virtually dissect an animal or analyze clouds and concepts of condensation and more. The Verizon Foundation offers training to educators on integrating mobile technology into lesson plans by partnering with the nonprofit Technology Student Association and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Together, they are sponsoring the Innovative App Challenge, in which hundreds of middle and high school student teams are conceptualizing mobile apps that incorporate science/technology/engineering/mathematics (STEM) activities to solve a problem in their school or community. Ten teams won personal smartphones and $10,000 grants for their schools, plus assistance in creating their apps and bringing them to the public earlier this year. Verizon expects to launch a new edition of the program this fall. Source: The Christian Science Monitor at CSMonitor.com

Our Own Ode of Joy Singing Heals Our Soul, Sets Us Free by Jan Kortie

B

efore singing was part of any human culture, it was part of nature. Nature never tries hard; it just is. It grows and blossoms and flows. So does heartfelt singing—as a joyful expression of soul, of one’s essential being. It is giving and sharing. Most of all, it is alive. Singing like this doesn’t ask for effort. But it does ask for courage. In expressing our longings, hopes and

love, we may encounter fear, shame or sorrow. That’s part of the beauty and surprising simplicity of liberating ourselves through song, which can be equally cheerful, lighthearted and humorous, or insightfully confronting the challenging issues in our lives. Some people make every effort to sing eloquently, but the joy of singing is just as fully accessible for those

that can’t master the technical qualifications or even carry a tune. All we really need to do to achieve personal satisfaction is to sing what’s inside us, enabling who we are to emerge. That’s why singing is healing; it helps make us whole. Giving emotional space to ourselves in song allows us to be heard in a special way; no two voices are alike because each is exactly suited to the individual. Our innate tendency to sing, like other forms of music, connects us with others and reminds us of ways in which we are attuned to one another. More natural than talking, the vibration of a singing voice is the most magical, direct way to connect our internal and external worlds. It’s comforting to note that we can only sing off-key if we compare our voice to another’s. No child ever decides by himself that he can’t sing. A child spontaneously sings, dances and draws without preconception until an authority figure steps in with a discordant opinion. Singing is a natural phenomenon as intuitive as breathing. It’s our right to sing freely, and so share our hearts and music with the world. As a soaring expression of love it contributes greatly to the well-being of individuals, communities and society. Jan Kortie first introduced the idea of voice-liberation in the Netherlands 30 years ago, developing a joyful approach to personal and professional singing that extends beyond traditional methods and techniques. His book, Your Soul Wants to Sing, available in Dutch, is the primer for his Academy of Voice Liberation, where he serves as director.

Seane Corn Weekend

Workshops at The Yoga Loft

S

eane Corn, an internationally celebrated yoga teacher, will teach a special chakra-focused series of workshops from 6 to 8:30 p.m., September 6; from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m., September 7; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., September 8, at The Yoga Loft, in Bethlehem. Corn will guide participants in using the tools of asana, meditation, reflection, intention and prayer to facilitate an understanding of the dynamics of the chakras in order to empower our health and life. Corn is known for her impassioned activism, unique self-expression and inspirational style of teaching that incorporates both the physical and mystical aspects of the practice of yoga. Her classes integrate dynamic vinyasa flow asana (linking movement with breath) with the application of precise alignment, meditation, visualization, intention and prayer to create an inner journey toward healing and empowerment. A long-time activist for social and political change, Corn created the yoga program at Children of the Night, a shelter that houses and educates adolescent prostitutes in the Los Angeles area, in 1998. As a result of her work with sexually exploited children, by 2004 she went on to became a dedicated champion for YouthAIDS, whose mission is to raise funds, provide services and spread national awareness about the global emergency of HIV/AIDS affecting our children worldwide. Within a year, in service to YouthAIDS, she created the Off the Mat, Into the World (OTM) campaign with the intention to use her international platform to generate outreach within the yoga and wellness communities. In 2007, OTM expanded to become a national leadership training program designed to help participants find their own unique purpose through yoga, creative inquiry and self-exploration exercises, as well as provide them with the organizational skills necessary to activate that purpose 30 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com

through local outreach and service-oriented projects. This effort, designed to initiate social circles of change in local communities nationwide, lives on through OTM’s Yoga in Action program. Since launching in 2007, OTM’s Global Seva Challenge program has raised over $3.5 million for programs worldwide, giving participants the opportunity to work in impoverished communities, providing support and aid, implementing projects and teaching yoga when appropriate. In the U.S., OTM created a program for at-risk and marginalized youth called the Empowered Youth Initiative, bringing awareness, resources, education and aid to inner city youth and teens. During the 2008 and 2012 elections, Corn and Arianna Huffington came together along with The Huffington Post and OTM to create a wellness sanctuary for delegates, press and political officials called The Huffington Oasis. Out of this grew YogaVotes, a program designed to help increase yoga voter registration at the 2012 election. This non-partisan initiative created a much-needed dialogue within the community about yoga, values, citizen engagement and the power of one’s vote. Locally, yoga teachers Megan Ridge, Josh Kehler and Melanie Smith are all participants in OTM’s Global Seva Challenge, raising funds to travel to Uganda, India and Ecuador, and be of service to communities in need. Yoga Loft teachers Megan Ridge and Alysha Pfeiffer also teach a weekend intensive Yoga in Action training once a year (January 24 to January 26, 2014). The upcoming weekend workshops with Corn will emphasize the connection between the mind, body, and spirit—appreciating the inter-dependency of all moments, great and small. The chakra system provides us with a road map that affirms this perception and presents a formula to make it tangible. Using the chakra system correctly, we can identify, reconcile and heal restrictive emotional patterns and physical imbalances in our mind/body. The study of the chakras can also help us develop our intuition, awareness and consciousness, as well as balance us physically, grounding and centering our energy. It can also increase our personal power and relationship to ourselves beyond the body, which gives a more compassionate understanding toward our personal issues and can reveal insight into our spirit. Cost: $175 (single session pricing also available). The Yoga Loft is located at 521 E. Fourth St., 3rd Floor, Bethlehem. icholas Theodorou’s interest in strength, health and wellness began as a child growing up on a small farm in Palmer Township. He was enthralled by the wonderment of life and by the age of seven, he knew he wanted to be a scientist. Theodorou pursued his dream, graduating from Lafayette College with a degree in chemistry and spending the next 30 years in the chemical industry. His interest in healthy living also continued to grow. As a young teen, he was introduced to weight lifting and started using nutritional supplements. He later became a dedicated power lifter and is a many time Pennsylvania State Powerlifting champion, a two-time National Masters Deadlift champion and an Amateur Athletic Union World champion. In 1981, he and others founded the American Drug-Free Powerlifting Association, now USAPL, the oldest and largest powerlifting organization in the country. In 1989, he launched Nutritional Technologies, a wholesale vitamin and sport supplement distributorship and personal training business dedicated to helping others develop a personal approach to overall health and wellness. He says the goal was simply to help people. In 2006, Theodorou formalized his years of experience and on-the-job training by earning his Doctorate of Naturopathy from Clayton College of Natural Health, in Birmingham, Alabama. “I consider myself a teacher of healthy lifestyles,” says Theodorou. “My approach is based on absolute common sense, which appeals to a lot of people but doesn’t appeal to many others. People are often looking for the quick fix or they are buying into the marketing hype of a product—I’m very proud that my program is common-sense-based.” The results speak for themselves—the program is constantly being validated by competitive athletes who compete in a variety of sports at all levels including Olympic and

World Championships, as well as individuals who want to have more energy, lose weight, get stronger or want to take a proactive approach to wellness. His method is built around the Five Point Program, which includes diet; exercise; nutritional supplement support; rest and recovery; and positive mental attitude and stress reduction. Theodorou says if one of the points is diminished, it impacts all. “The program is very individualized and thorough,” he explains. “It starts with a detailed consultation—identifying the client’s health goals, reviewing the client’s health history and any supplements they may already be taking. We then develop a personalized program, noting that everyone is different; we are all unique as a fingerprint. It’s my goal to become a long-term partner in health.” He says proper diet is extremely important. With so many foods packed with artificial preservatives and additives, he helps people determine what to eat, when to eat it, how much and what not to eat. Theodorou encourages individuals to read labels. “People are responsible for their own health, so they need to take charge,” he advises. “My program is all about empowerment, so it’s important for people to be engaged and make the commitment.” He is also passionate about the use of nutritional supplements. “My knowledge of supplements goes back to eighth or ninth grade,” he notes. “I know what works and what doesn’t, as well as the legitimacy of supplements.” His degree in chemistry and interest in science gives him the technical confidence to understand ingredients and potential contaminants. Plus, every product that he recommends, he also uses himself. His commitment to helping others extends beyond his business. Twelve years ago, he began working with the Bethlehem Special Olympics Program, coaching the powerlifters. The powerlifting program began with three athletes and it has grown to include 14 athletes that participate regularly. He says for him, and the other coaches involved, the experience has been very rewarding. “I have learned so much; it’s been very sobering and humbling.” Theodorou says the knowledge and skills he has garnered allow him to be a teacher—not a salesman. “I’m not here to push a product,” he explains. “It is my fundamental human desire to be of value to fellow human beings.” For more information, email Nutritek@aol. com, call 1-800-973-2436 or visit Nutritek.net.

“Central to healing and prevention is the elimination of things that fuel the growth of cancer cells, such as sugar, toxins, heavy metals, nutrient-deficient processed foods and an acidic environment in the body,” observes Francis. “Regular exercise, a daily, high-quality multivitamin and detoxification are equally crucial to restoring the body’s biological terrain.” Doctor of Naturopathy Judy Seeger, founder of CancerCleanseCamp.com and host of CancerAnswers. While this helps cleanse the body of environmental toxins, the toxic emotions and stress that produce acid, weaken the immune system and create an environment for cancer to propagate, must also be dealt with. Experts generally agree on a range of basic, commonsense preventive measures that include a low-fat, plant-based diet; aerobic, flexibility and strength exercises; healthy sleep habits; and other stress-reducing activities. “These are basic ingredients for maintaining sound health, and can be crucial toward improving the health of an individual with cancer,” says Dr. Keith Block, the “father of integrative oncology,” and author of Life Over Cancer. He founded The Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment, in Skokie, Illinois, that customizes care plans based on each person’s medical, biochemical, physical, nutritional and psychosocial needs.

If You Have Cancer We Have the Answer

T

he Cancer Report by John R. Voell and Cynthia A. Chatfield on integrative health care for the treatment of cancer contains irrefutable research contributed by many talented, dedicated health care professionals. “The world is finally ready to read and put into practice the remarkable breakthroughs in healing outlined in this report, moving everyone from a cancer victim to a cancer victor. Even the well can benefit from this information. This is a book whose time has come!” ~Louise Hay, author of “You Can heal Your Life and Empowering Women”

“I talk to people who do all the right things to improve their biochemistry, but without an emotional detox and spiritual connection to something larger than themselves, their healing process tends to stall.”

Patrick Quillin, Ph.D., a former vice president of nutrition for a national network of cancer hospitals and author of The Wisdom and Healing Power of Whole Foods and Beating Cancer with Nutrition, recommends a triple threat. “Cancer requires a threefold treatment approach to create a synergistic response. Silberstein and other leading physicians, including Dr. TienSheng Hsu, a Chinese psychiatrist and author of the Secret to Healing Cancer; Dr. Jingduan Yang, a board-certified psychiatrist and founder and medical director of the Tao Institute of Mind & Body Medicine; and Seeger, believe that the mind and spirit play a significant role in healing. “Cancer begins in the spirit and ends up in the body, which is why I recommend that anyone positively diagnosed read the Cancer Report,” remarks Silberstein. n recent years, there has been a gradual change in thinking when it comes to the environment, and many people are now becoming aware of the need for a more sustainable lifestyle. In addition to changing one’s personal life by buying locally grown foods LVIH.massage/chiro(4.75x2.25)_Layout 1 5/13/13 and practicing energy saving in one’s

Due to an increase in students’ interests, several colleges and universities are now offering degrees in this field, including Penn State University, Lehigh Moravian College 3:16 PM University, Page 1

and Muhlenberg College. While the programs at these three colleges may be designed differently, their educational goal to provide students with the knowledge and experience to face important environmental issues is the same. In 2010, Penn State University first introduced their energy and sustainability policy program, which was uniquely designed to be offered entirely online through World Campus and was intended for, but not limited to, working professionals seeking to further their education and knowledge in the field of sustainable studies. Due to the accessibility of this program, students of all ages from over 35 states and several foreign countries are enrolled in this program. According to Brandi Robinson, an adviser for the new online bachelor’s degree offered through Penn State University in energy and sustainability policy, says that five broad learning objectives emerged from this program: sustainability ethics, energy industry knowledge, analytical skills, communication skills and global perspective. Lehigh University also offers a variety of programs in the environmentrelated fields, including a Bachelor of

who pursue these degrees are required to take courses in economics, political science and philosophy, in addition to their core environment and science classes. These requirements challenge students to make important connections between the environment and our economicallydriven business world. Like Moravian, Muhlenberg College also understands the importance of an interdisciplinary program in this field. In 2009, Muhlenberg first offered their program in sustainability studies, which is intended as a minor to complement a primary major such as business, political science, media and communication, the sciences and the humanities. The courses in this program are designed to challenge students to take on environmental issues at the local, national and global level. Each of these programs prepares students for a career by requiring field work as a capstone experience in which students focus on a particular environmental issue of their choosing and explore the issue for possible solutions using the skills and knowledge gained from the programs at hand. According to Penn State University lecturer Brandi Robinson, this is a rewarding experience for students who “want to do something in which they feel they’ll make a positive difference in the world and leave it a better place for their children and grandchildren.” Students from these colleges have done projects in countries such as Cambodia, Haiti, China and Costa Rica, in addition to taking on local issues like fracking. Many professors involved in undergraduate programs in this field have noticed a passion in their students that causes the majority of them to continue on to graduate school. When pursuing any sort of higher education, it is vital to consider what job opportunities are available in that particular field of study, as well as the career prospective in the next 20 to 40 years. Students who pursue degrees in sustainability and environmental studies have a variety of career opportunities including working in the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, nonprofit organizations, environmental consulting companies and policy making, in addition to jobs in the fields of business, law, science and the arts. While it is evi-

dent that the business world has not yet made the necessary changes to address the problems of today and find solutions, change is imminent. Sustainability is becoming an economic business driver as companies are now becoming aware of how sustainable practices are enhancing their efficiencies and saving them money. Dr. Frank Kuserk, the director of the environmental studies and sciences program at Moravian College, notes that “many companies are now creating and hiring ‘sustainability coordinators’ that assist them in finding ways to become more sustainable and I think that this will only increase over the next 20 to 40 years.” As students are interested in becoming educated in sustainability and environment-related fields, professors

officials have expressed increasing concerns about dangers posed by such bacteria, including methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), which are often transmitted between patients in hospital settings, and a multi-antibiotic-resistant form of tuberculosis. The problem is compounded by the use of antibiotics to enhance growth and production in livestock. glue”, produced by bees to seal their hives and protect them from infections, is “the single most powerful antimicrobial we have in the plant kingdom,” advises Kilham. That claim is backed by numerous studies from institutions such as Britain’s National Heart and Long Institute, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Harokopio University, in Greece. In 2005, a study by Turkey’s Hacettepe University showed that propolis killed both MRSA and VRE bacteria. Other studies by Italy’s University of Milan have shown propolis’ effectiveness in combating upper respiratory infections and Candida albicans fungal infections. Propolis is also available in pill form. Pelargonium sidoides is a favored option for Cates to abbreviate both the duration and severity of cold and flu, including any lingering cough or sore throat. This South African medicinal is also known as African geranium. Usually used in tincture form, it’s also useful against a large range of microbial infections. One study from the Russian Institute of Pulmonology reported that nearly 70 percent of participating adults with bronchitis received relief within four days— more than double those that became well taking a placebo. Olive leaf extract was first mentioned in the Bible and recent research confirms its effectiveness against a wide variety of microbial infections. A U.S. Department of Agriculture study published in the Journal of Food Science confirms that olive leaf extract is effective in fighting food-borne pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, labeling it a broad-spectrum antimicrobial. New York University School of Medicine research

published in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications showed that olive leaf extract reversed many HIV-related changes in the immune system. Retired medical journalist Dr. Morton Walker, author of Nature’s Antibiotic: Olive Leaf Extract, wrote that olive leaf extract “inhibits the growth of every virus, bacterium, fungus, yeast and protozoan it was tested against… and is effective against a minimum of 56 disease-causing organisms.”

In a worst-case scenario, “If antibiotics are the only alternative to treat a lab-confirmed bacterial infection, it’s vital to replace the beneficial intestinal bacteria inevitably wiped out by the drug,” concludes Cates. “Sometimes a few servings of a good natural yogurt (without sugar or fruit) will suffice. If not, look for a high-quality probiotic to restore the digestive system’s natural bacterial colony.” Kathleen Barnes is a natural health advocate, author and book publisher

Good Food on a Tight Budget Tips to Get Top Value from Each Dollar by Kathleen Barnes

F

or many, the recent economic downturn has affected the way we shop for food. Even families that cook dinner at home most nights are struggling to afford the ingredients to make healthy meals, says Laura Seman, a senior manager for Cooking Matters, a national program that educates families in need about reaping the most from local food resources. “Putting good food on the family table on

a five-or-six-dollar-a-day per person budget is tough, but it’s possible,” advises Nutritionist Dawn Undurraga, a registered dietitian and co-author of the Environmental Working Group’s online publication, Good Food on a Tight Budget. “Even eating for one is doable for under $200 a month. When you fill your cart with the foods listed, you’re building health, lowering exposure to agricultural chemicals, protecting the environment and cutting grocery bills.” In considering how consumers can maximize nutritional value in their spending, researchers examined 1,200 foods to help people get beyond the common perception that eating healthy is expensive. “We looked at food prices, nutrients, pesticides, environmental pollutants and artificial ingredients,” says Undurraga. “Then we chose the top 100 or so, based on balancing all of those factors.”

Think Outside the Box

Some of the EWG findings might surprise many of us:

4 Raw cabbage is the top-ranked food because of its price and high nutritional value as a cruciferous vegetable. For less than 10 cents a serving, it poses far fewer calories than potatoes and is a worthy addition to salads, soups and stir-fries. 42

Lehigh Valley

www.healthylehighvalley.com

4 The next highest marks for price and nutrition spotlight carrots, bananas, pears, watermelon and frozen broccoli, each at less than 30 cents a serving. 4 Bananas and pears usually cost less than apples, plus they customarily endure fewer pesticide applications. 4 The best animal protein award goes to roasted turkey; hot dogs ranked last. 4 The next-best animal protein identified is a whole chicken, roasted at the beginning of the week and used in various ways for future meals. 4 Fresh, whole carrots and sweet potatoes are among the best produce buys, but frozen corn and broccoli almost always cost less than their fresh equivalents and are just as nutritious. 4 A serving of oatmeal is half the cost of sugary processed cereals, plus it’s more filling and causes less fluctuation in blood sugar levels. 4 Canned salmon is almost always wild caught and is much cheaper than fresh, but be wary of BPA (bisphenol-A) migration from the can. 4 Queso blanco, a mild, soft, white cheese common in Latino cooking, is both less expensive and less processed than many other cheeses.

Change Our Routine

Tracie McMillan, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, author of the bestselling book, The American Way of Eating, learned how to eat on a tight budget as an undercover journalist. She had to budget for food based on wages working on a farm in California, in the produce department of a Michigan superstore and in a New York City restaurant kitchen. The task was even more difficult because she was determined to eat as healthy as possible. “Time and energy are key ingredients when cooking from scratch,” says McMillan. “I was exhausted after a day spent working these physically demanding jobs and quickly became more apathetic about healthy food than I generally am.”

Without disposable funds for the fast-food route, cooking from scratch was mandatory. Improve Immunity Vitamin D. “It’s my top immune supplement choice for most children,” says Rountree. The vitamin is crucial for triggering the body’s natural immune system to react to and fight off infections. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that daily 1,200 international unit (IU) supplements of vitamin D3 reduced cases of seasonal flu in schoolchildren by more than 40 percent. Neustaedter recommends that school-aged children supplement with 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day. Unlike D2, D3 is natural and nontoxic, he says. Probiotics. These “friendly” bacteria help reestablish beneficial intestinal flora to both assist digestion and immunity. “Eighty percent of the immune system is produced in the small intestine,” says Neustaedter. “Having a healthy small intestine will lead to a healthy immune system. Probiotics will go a long way to accomplishing that.” Rountree recommends children receive a mixture of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria—at least 15 billion colony-forming units a day. A study by an international team published in Pediatrics showed that probiotic supplements may reduce the incidence of fevers, coughs, runny noses and other infections in young children. Elderberry. “If kids get frequent colds, elderberry can be helpful,” notes Neustaedter, who suggests that children take such extracts according to label instructions for acute sickness during the cold and flu season. He considers it a worthy antiviral and immune system stimulant. Elderberry’s immune-boosting potential may be due to its ability to enhance antioxidant activity. Several studies, including one issued by the National Institutes of Health, have shown that black elderberry extract may shorten the duration of a bout of flu.

Soothe Stress

“If kids have a hard time turning their minds off and going to sleep, calcium and magnesium will help,” Neustaedter advises. As a calming mineral, magnesium trumps calcium; because kids tend to need more calcium for their bones, the two nutrients are usually given together, adds Rountree. He recommends that children take 100 to 300 mg of magnesium daily, depending on their age and weight. Lemon balm (melissa officinalis). To soothe anxiety, Rountree points to lemon balm as safe and gentle, yet effective. St. Mary’s Hospital, in

Madison, Wisconsin, reports that researchers have found that lemon balm, in combination with other herbs like valerian, may ease restlessness, anxiety and sleep disorders. Kids can drink one to two cups of freshly brewed tea daily. For a tasty and convenient option, substitute glycerites; tinctures that use glycerin to extract the active constituents from herbs. Exploring the Depths of Human Energy An Interview with Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack by Michelene Bell

What benefits does qi provide and how does it accomplish healing?

S

ay you’re a battery, and the qi is the life force that keeps the battery going. When the juice inside is used up, the battery is lifeless. Qi is related to your lifespan. If people squander energy on arguing and negative pattern behavior, then how can anyone increase energy? Qigong understands where people lose their energy and how to get it back. Yet, qi has profoundly physical effects that unlock our potential. Five thousand years ago, Chinese medicine said, “Qi moves the blood.” Standing still relaxed in a Qigong

posture, a person can circulate as much blood as they could running for three miles. Jogging releases a flood of cortisol and negative stress hormones that close off small capillaries, but Qigong does not. There is no stress response from Qigong (it actually reduces cortisol in studies) and the level of full body circulation is even greater. Qigong noticeably improves blood circulation, digestion, etc. A pleasant heat builds in the navel center, bringing a quiet confidence and power within.

Is this life force, or qi, different in each person? The qi is one unified force. Some people have more than others. On

an extreme example, say a person has enough energy that they don’t need to sleep anymore. This is a very high level of Qigong. Most people need six hours of sleep, thus indicating our limited energy situation. Qi can be replenished by using breathing techniques, meditation, fasting, prayer, sunbathing, etc. It is the same spirit, or qi, that moves through each person. Unity and oneness movements will take place all over the world and they will be based around qi. It is all the same force, in different amounts.

Can a person have too much qi in their body? Qigong theory states the “ocean of qi” in the navel can never be filled. It has a vast reservoir, allowing a lifetime of qi to be stored. Only if it is blocked can there be too much energy. When the spine and nervous system are out of alignment, it is important to open meridians and do stretching routines. One cannot have too much qi, but it can be blocked and qigong exercises will help to open up the channels. People with abundant qi have a grace and power about them that attracts people. New students frequently find their skin clears up and their eyes whiten. Blood circulates better, helping more toxins leave the system. The benefits to having more qi are the same as having better blood circulation. The pulse of your heartbeat is the foundation of life, but Chinese medicine has a dozen different pulses that Western medicine has not yet discovered. When people do Qigong for the first time, they are often surprised to see their fingers pulsate and fill up with blood. The warmth people feel in the navel is also from the increased blood flow.

You speak about euphoric highs that can be attained from breathing techniques. What is the value of this in practical, real-world terms? Everyone wants to feel good. Alcohol transforms our mental state, but also destroys the liver. Qi has no side effect, except making you feel full of vitality. Its highs are beyond words. Sometimes the qi will vibrate throughout our body in such a blissful way as to feel we are 46

being touched by God, all without chemicals or manmade products that cost money. The qi being free, abundant, right under our nose makes it the ultimate ally to rise above life’s obstacles. Once you get the hang of the breathing techniques, there comes the ability to have a natural high anytime. Sometimes euphoria is so profound that it can erase negative emotional patterns presently going on. The ability to drop bad qi quickly trains the student to be without heavy emotional vibrations.

cal problem in pets—cognitive disorder (akin to Alzheimer’s in humans). Dimethylglycine supplementation aids in treating seizures, as well. It both supports the nervous system and provides energy to the body’s cells. Herbs, including valerian, passionflower, kava, gastrodia (tian ma), uncaria (gou teng), ostrea concha (mu li) and buthus martensi (quan xie), can also be helpful. Because they can be powerful natural medicines that could interact with each other and with prescription medicines, use them only under veterinary supervision. Homeopathic remedies are also widely incorporated into natural treatments of seizures such as tinctures of stramonium and belladonna. A twicedaily homeopathic detoxification treatment for pets experiencing seizures from any cause, using berberis, nux vomica and lymphomyosot, is recommended, as well. Due to the overwhelming success of using natural therapies for pets with epilepsy at our Paws & Claws Animal Hospital, most do not need to rely on medications for the problem. Those pets that arrive on a regimen of strong anticonvulsant drugs are slowly weaned off of them, resulting in improved health, lower vet bills and better control of recovery. Most never have another seizure, as long as they stay on the natural therapy protocol prescribed.
