“Time = life; therefore, waste your time and waste your life, or master your time and master your life.”
Even though it’s something that’s all around us and most of us take it for granted, time is one of the most mysterious forces in the universe. Why does it matter so much?
Every single thing in the universe is affected by time. Whether it’s a tulip, a human, or a star, all things gradually age and eventually decay as time progresses. What are you going to do with the time you’ve been given? The answer to this question really matters because you can’t get wasted time back. People often think of money as their most valuable resource, and while it is important because it allows you to buy the nice things you need and want, you can get money back. Time, however, is intangible and once it’s gone, it’s gone.
There are three stages of time: the past, the present and the future. We can use the past to learn and we can prepare for the future, but the present is the only space we have to work in. Research shows that being more mindful of what’s going on right now and living in the present benefits both mental and physical health.
Speaking of the past and the future, a person’s perspective of these two times has a big impact on their happiness and peace of mind. Many of us spend a lot of time ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. If we are able to let go of the past and what can’t be changed and look ahead in the unknown with hope instead of fear, we would feel a lot happier and calmer.
Community is very important for a person’s health and wellbeing. Maintaining relationships takes a commitment and whether it’s a friendship or romantic partnership, time is a key element. Healthy relationships don’t just develop overnight. How much time people invest is often the main difference between a relationship that’s deep and fulfilling, and one that’s shallow.
The old phrase says that “time heals everything,” and while that often feels hollow to people in the middle of a painful experience, they often find that it eventually becomes true. Sometimes the only way to get a new, healthier perspective on a situation is to give it time. Within that time, a person is given the opportunities to think about what’s happened and experience other things. Time serves as both a teacher and a healer, and while a person may not go back to who they were before, time has allowed them to grow. Be conscious of time, your time.
Natural Awakenings is printed on partially recycled and fully recyclable newsprint with black soy ink.
There’s an inspirational saying that everyone has the same 24 hours in a day, so no one can complain about not having time for the things they want to do. However, the reality is that while everyone does technically have 24 hours in a day, the amount of free time they have varies dramatically. While someone with a good job that has normal working hours can spend a fair amount of time practicing a skill, someone who needs to work many more hours to earn the same amount can’t. In that sense, even though they both have 24 hours in a day, time is relative for them.

The Feel Good Again Institute (formerly HowToLiveYounger.com)
“I want YOU to Feel Good Again”
Bear Creek Organics
Cultivating Land and Relationships
by Sheila JulsonRichard Mitchell, owner of Bear Creek Organics edible landscape company, takes pride in working with the land instead of from a playbook. He takes a holistic, individualized approach toward landscapes and life design that brings out the best in the land while considering the lifestyle of the homeowner. Bear Creek Organics also has its own nursery with a full palette of native, organically grown fruit and nut trees, bushes and plants that he can effectively implement into landscaping plans.
Mitchell has interacted with nature since childhood. He developed an entrepreneurial spirit when his grandfather had paid him to help him with his gardening. During college, Mitchell started his own landscaping company while pursuing his environmental science degree. He also started a worm compost company, Bear Creek Organics, the genesis of what became the landscaping business. Mitchell had the opportunity to work with renowned soil microbiologist Dr. Elaine Ingham at the Rodale Institute, where he learned about soil ecology and regenerative agriculture.
Mitchell also designed, installed, and managed an extensive school garden program for The Graham Academy. The project involved creating two edible schoolyards by installing vegetable gardens, fruit and berry bushes, greenhouses, native flowers and a food forest. Every student had gardening and cooking class once a week and were involved every step of the way. Mitchell realized how difficult it was to acquire all of the unique fruit trees and bushes he needed for the school’s edible landscape, as well as for private clients.
“That motivated me to start building my own edible landscaping nursery,” Mitchell says. In five years, he’s built a collection of
unique varieties of fruit and nut trees, berry bushes and native plants that he’s tested and used on jobs. “Each year, it gets bigger and more customized to Pennsylvania’s climates and microclimates.”
He notes that fruit trees sold at many commercial garden centers or big-box stores are brought in at the beginning of the season, usually from Southern states, and thus not adaptive to Pennsylvania’s climate. “Our trees are organically grown, and are stronger, healthier, and produce safe, healthy food, which in turn produces safe, healthy families and environments.”
Bear Creek Organics’ custom design-build approach also includes education and management to help clients maintain their landscapes and be good stewards for future land users. He uses tools such as a detailed questionnaire so he can gauge the client’s lifestyle, likes and dislikes and goals for their outdoor spaces. Recent projects include a two-pond system, connected by a stream and a system of swales and drainage ditches that all work together.
“The two ponds and the stream run continuously on a pump, so there’s an ornamental effect, but it’s also holistically connected to the land, so every time you get a big downpour, water is managed in a way that excess water from other parts of the property fill the pond. You never have fill with a hose,” he explains. “It’s a functional water management system hy -
bridized as an ornamental pond. It’s also self-cleaning, so it doesn’t require herbicides or chemicals.”
Mitchell designs whole systems that work together, incorporating berry bushes, native plants, herb gardens, raised garden beds, rain gardens and swales. The holistic approach to landscape and life design solves problems like drainage problems in yards, helping not just the homeowner but also the entire community’s water issues by taking pressure off downstream systems. He notes that his detailed process helps avoid problems down the road.
“Our process allows us to avoid problems before they happen,” he says. “Many times, we’re fixing problems created by other contractors or previous homeowners. There’s a certain order of doing things that a good design process will bring out. This saves clients thousands of dollars in the long run by avoiding those types of mistakes.”
Because landscapes need to be managed extensively during the first couple of years after installation, Mitchell’s process involves client education. He offers workshops, talks, private classes, maintenance packages, coaching and other educational tools for the property owner.
“That’s the biggest key to our success, passing the torch—or the apple—to the homeowner, teaching clients how to maintain their landscape to the point where they don’t need us anymore,” Mitchell concludes. “Natural solutions are all around and connecting with the land starts in backyard. We’re literally standing and living on top of solutions, by growing healthy, organic food while enhancing how we work with the land.”

The Energy Enhancement Systems
With as much effort as it takes to recline in a chair and take a nap, you can give your body the energy it needs to heal itself. The body wants to and can heal itself, but until now the proper environment has not been available to make that possible. With the use of the Energy Enhancement System (EES) the proper environment is now available right here in Allentown, PA.
What is the EE System and how does it work?
This innovative technology was invented by Dr. Sandra Rose Michael, DNM, Ph.D., DCSJ Inventor, Researcher, and Professor of Applied Integrative Biophysics. Energy Enhancement Systems (EES) combines the mind, body, and spirit, as well as science to help you achieve peak performance and reach higher states of health, consciousness, and self-actualization.
With 25 years of extraordinary beneficial use and many thousands of success stories, the EES is a set of custom-built and installed computers designed to generate energy fields that promote healing. This bio-active life-enhancing field combines color therapy, light therapy, a biophotonic charge and scalar wave energy. It is Nikola Tesla’s technology finally realized for the benefit of human health.
Optimal health does not start outside of the body, it starts within, more specifically within the cells of your body. If your cells are not properly charged you will experience disease, as opposed to health. The cells in your body hold an electrical charge between 70-90 millivolts, whereas cancerous cells hold a charge below 20 millivolts.
In other words, sickness can be measured by a weaker charge in your cells, whereas health is measured by a higher electrical charge in your cells.
Infinite Energy of Allentown
THE FUTURE IS NOW
Through Scalar wave technology and bio photonic light, the EE System gives a boost to the cells of your body, charging them at their optimal charge of 70-90 millivolts. Spending time in this technology is like recharging the battery of your body, giving you more strength, vitality, and energy to thrive.
Clinical trials have shown that the EE System technology assists in cell regeneration, neurotransmitter functions, immune function and so much more. This research has been acknowledged by many in both the medical and scientific communities. Thousands of people around the world are reporting benefits such as mood elevation, lower stress levels, pain relief, increased energy, emotional stability, and improved immune function and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
This is what the future of health looks like, and the good news is, it’s already here. To get your first treatment and experience the full benefits see the ad on page 27.

Crystal Singing Bowl Sound Healing
Do you have a desire to take your physical and emotional healing to the next level? Are you looking for a relaxing, meditative healing modality? Have you experienced Crystal Singing Bowl Vibrational Sound Healing?
Our bodies are made up of energetic centers (chakras) that affect both our physical and emotional health. Crystal singing bowls work with the body through the vibrations emitted from the different-sized singing bowls which each correspond to a specific chakra, or energy center, of the body. How does it work? During a singing bowl session, the bowls are struck with a mallet that is then softly dragged around the perimeter to continue emitting the frequencies that cause the bowls to “sing”. The bowls are played in various diverse sequences to assist your body in addressing any stored or blocked energy that needs to be released to restore and clear the energy pathways located at the base of your spine (your root chakra) to the top of your head (your crown chakra).
But why does it work so well on the body? A Japanese researcher, Masaru Emoto, studied the effects of frequency and vibration by exposing water to different music and then freezing it and observing the shape of the ice crystals under a microscope. The results were surprising as the ice crystals of the water that was exposed to positive energetic vibrations (like classical music) formed into beautifully elaborate geometric patterns, while the water exposed to heavy metal/rock music or negative energetic vibrations reflected disorganized, distorted shapes. This is important because the human body is made up of 70-80% water and therefore can also benefit from receiving positive energetic vibrations through sound. Similarly, a Swiss physician and scientist, Hans Jenny explained the acoustic effects of sound waves (known as cymatics). When sand (silica) was placed on a vibrational platform which was then exposed to the same types of music as the water, the sand formed either beautiful geometric patterns or an unrecognizable, scattered shape based upon the positive or negative sound vibration that was applied. This is important because the nails, blood, and bones of your body ALSO contain silica which responds to the energetic sound vibrations to which they are exposed.
A sound healing session lasts 60-90 minutes and can be done as a group session or private session. Typically the recipient is reclining on a yoga mat or massage table or sitting in a comfortable chair in a meditative state to allow the body to relax and absorb the vibrational energy – both physically and energetically. As the energy centers and corresponding body organs receive the vibrations, sensations are detected throughout the body during a session. There are a myriad of responses experienced by the body ranging from heat/cold, tingling/buzzing, deep relaxation, to emotional responses such as laughing, crying, euphoria, deep sense of calm, etc. The body will intuitively receive what is needed at the time of the treatment session.
So why not experience the emotional and physical benefits yourself by attending one of our sound healing events. Many people attend a group session and then proceed to schedule a private session to achieve further healing benefits. Our next event is scheduled for March 20th at 6:30pm. Space is limited to 10-12 people per group session and reservations are required.

A Holistic Approach To Developing The Voice
Inner Awakenings Music Studio
We have an amazing power that exists within us. The voice is an incredible catalyst for the soul’s evolution. By empowering us to take risks and expand our mental limitations, we can achieve freedom, expression, and authenticity in our sound.
The key to finding our voice lies in understanding that singing encompasses everything that happens to us physically, mentally, and metaphysically. In other words, we are the instrument! The voice teacher’s mission is to guide the student to trust their own expressive and intuitive process. We have the tools and knowledge to guide you on the path but ultimately, the technical blueprint is yours!
Physically, we identify what the singer needs for efficient and free vocalization. This includes proper posture, breath support, engaging the body, and effective use of vocal anatomy. The physical layer is a vital one!
Mentally, we look at what thoughts and beliefs hold us back from expressing ourselves. Are we afraid of high notes? Are we afraid to sing in front of others? Are we afraid to speak with resonance? As teachers, we guide students to overcome these mental barriers that can hinder free phonation and creativity.
On a metaphysical level, are there blockages in the chakras? Are there holding patterns that need to be cleared? Can other modalities be involved to help the student achieve a free and resonant sound?
As we explore the different layers of the voice, singing becomes a journey into the innermost workings of our soul. We do more than learn a song. We learn about who we are, and what stands in the way of our true sound, and we allow ourselves to evolve into even greater versions of ourselves.

Treating the Root Cause of Dis-ease
There is something seriously wrong with our health system. More people are developing autoimmune and mystery illnesses that Western medicine cannot get to the root of. There is no sense in looking for a cure without addressing the cause. A diagnosis is nothing more than a name for grouped symptoms, it doesn’t explain anything. People are led to believe their body is against them or they are crazy.
I am a certified Ayurveda Practitioner and energy healer with intuitive gifts that allow me to pinpoint causes and know directly what my clients need. I know what it’s like to spend a lifetime in doctor’s offices on pharmaceuticals, getting no answers and results. I am here for the people abandoned by the medical system and tired of getting nowhere.
Parasites are a huge underlying cause of disease, but we never talk about it. It is estimated over 80% of Americans have intestinal worms. Cysts and tumors are caused by parasitic larvae. More people are becoming electrosensitive without knowing, keeping their bodies in constant pain and inflammation. I work to get my clients digesting and eliminating properly. Undigested food becomes ‘ama,’ a toxic substance in the body. I work with diet, lifestyle and provide custom-made herbal formulas. It all starts with self-awareness and the willingness to make change. I can give you the road map to get there but the work is up to you. If you don’t make yourself a number one priority, how will you handle everything else put before you?

Leah Mary QuirkSleepTalk®
The Goulding SleepTalk® Process is a technique developed by Joanne Goulding in the 1970’s. It is designed to equip parents and caregivers of children to promote a positive mindset and self-esteem thereby correcting problems associated with conduct, attitude, behaviors and emotionally acting out. The Goulding SleepTalk® Process is not hypnosis. It is based on the concept of autosuggestion. With autosuggestion statements that are said to oneself repeatedly over time are taken in by the subconscious, adopted, and become part of the belief system. For both children and adults it’s important to keep what we say and think about ourselves positive and healthy. Parents and or the primary caregivers are taught by a certified Goulding SleepTalk® consultant how to administer the Foundational Statement to the child in the early sleep state. The Foundational Statement communicates unconditional love for the child. It takes about 2 minutes and should be done every night. Parents are encouraged to continue with positive messaging when speaking to or about the child when they are awake. Having a consistent and congruent manner of being is very important. Overtime the positive suggestions are adopted, become beliefs, and drive out the negative suggestions and beliefs. This results in a positive self-image and high self-esteem. It acts like a firewall to protect children from negative suggestions the way a firewall keeps a computer safe and in good working order. Contact me if you are interested in a free consultation.

Boost Immunity and Reduce Inflammation with mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT)
by Yuliya Semenovych, Elixir Health and Wellness. In the quest for holistic health solutions, Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) emerges as a long-lost beacon of innovation, combining advanced scientific principles with the natural healing prowess of oxygen. This therapy capitalizes on the simple yet profound concept: more oxygen can lead to better health. The body is exposed to higher oxygen levels under deeper pressure than what’s found in our normal environment. This hyper-oxygenated setting allows for deeper penetration of oxygen into body tissues, cells, and organs, initiating a cascade of healing benefits. Here’s how mHBOT can concretely impact wellness:
Reducing Inflammation: One of mHBOT’s most significant benefits is its ability to mitigate inflammation, a root cause of numerous health issues. By enhancing oxygen delivery to inflamed tissues, the therapy helps in reducing the oxidative stress and cellular damage that inflammation causes.
Boosting Immune Function: Enhanced oxygen levels can fortify the body’s immune response. Oxygen under pressure aids in increasing the production and activity of white blood cells, which play a crucial role in fighting off infections and diseases.
For the holistic health community, mHBOT represents a perfect blend of nature and technology. Unlike pharmaceuticals or invasive treatments, it leverages a natural element – oxygen – and employs it in a scientifically controlled way to stimulate the body’s innate healing abilities. Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy goes beyond mere symptom management; it targets the underlying processes of inflammation, tissue damage, and immune weakness, providing a comprehensive, natural path to wellness.

Our Daily Ea ting Habits
When we consider our diet and healthy eating habits, we are exercising the strength of Self-Regulation. Self-Regulation is self-controlled moderation of choices. This strength helps to manage impulses and emotions. Impulses induced by anxiety can trigger emotional responses that can hinder our healthy choices. Studies in positive psychology, attribute self-regulation to healthy choices that we make in eating, exercise, and well-being. When we grow our strengths of self-regulation and prudence in making careful choices and minimizing the impact of negative and harmful choices, we grow. When we apply this to healthy eating, we may consider that it is more sustainable to grow vegetables and fruits in our garden than to buy grocery produce. Or perhaps we will choose to plant and harvest in a community garden to commune with others who like to share their appreciation of the beauty that is harvested in gardens.
The Appreciation of Beauty is a character strength that grows the virtue of transcendence in our humanity. This appreciation can be seen in the beauty of nourishing foods being harvested and shared in community. Do you have a desire to grow a garden or want to share these inspirations and grow your virtue of transcendence this Spring? If you would like to grow your strengths or explore your spirituality and grow your faith this Spring, consider booking a session to grow more this Beautiful Season!

Your Body Is An Ecosystem
The human body is an intricate structure composed of many different moving parts. Some of these include the nervous, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, integumentary, and musculoskeletal systems, which all work with one another in order to maintain homeostasis. The relationship of each system to the other can be viewed as one collective ecosystem. When there are negative changes to one system this can cause disharmony and havoc throughout the body. This can be compared to an outdoor environment where the amount of rainfall can directly affect the soil and subsequently the growth rate of crops. In this example, improper functioning of one external system causes improper functioning of another. The same can occur internally as a result in the human body when equilibrium is lost. This can produce symptoms such as pain and injury among other issues. However, it usually takes a large amount of stressors for this to happen. This is due to the fact that the human body is very resilient and highly adaptable. For the reasons just outlined, it is very important to make sure you receive treatment from a healthcare provider that treats the root cause of an injury rather than just the symptoms. This requires gathering a thorough history and performing a complete physical exam. A patient’s plan of care should address aspects such as stress management, sleep hygiene, and activity level. It may also be relevant to discuss the subjective limiting beliefs that a patient may have that can prevent them from reaching full recovery.

Chinese Medicine's Five Elements Theory
Using Chinese Medicine's Five Elements Theory a treatment diet can be comprised for anyone. Every food and herb has a taste, temperature, and an energy property. Should you be eating more cooked or more raw foods? How about protein? Do you need more animal protein or is a plantbased diet good for you right now? Right now is the question? Our constitutions change, so re-evaluating when the body talks to us through symptom patterns is not only wise but also necessary for optimum health and balance.
During a consultation, after the review of symptoms and history, a tongue and pulse exam are also performed. This tells a beautiful story of what is going on inside of the body and can forecast potentially problematic issues before a true health crisis arises. A treatment diet plan can give quick and noticeable results. Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all diet plan for success. Even two people with the same diagnosis may need to eat differently for their particular constitutional needs.
As a client of my program, you will receive the following:
A program to achieve your optimal state of health by balancing your body through a combination of modalities that are best for you, this may include any combination of the following: nutrition and a Chinese treatment diet, Herbal medicine, nervous system, and trauma release through integrative bodywork - combining Polarity therapy, Craniosacral therapy and Reiki or Family Systems Therapy. Programs are customized and designed very specific to each client.
A non-judgmental space for your health to be discussed and balanced, recipes that are healthy and simple to prepare. Coaching and support to help you make the dietary and lifestyle changes you want and need. Simple but informative handouts that will increase your understanding of nutrition and knowledge of Chinese medicine. You also get our commitment to your health and success. To decide if our programs are a good fit for you, we invite you to schedule an initial consultation. This appointment is one hour in length. We will get your complete health history, hear about your life, and tell you how to proceed in constructing an individualized balancing program.

Cancer Increasingly Strikes Young Adults
A study in the journal BMJ Oncology reports a sizable global rise in cancers among adults under 50, with the highest rates found in North America, Australia and Western Europe. Between 1990 and 2019, the incidence of early-onset cancer increased by 79.1 percent, and early-onset cancer deaths rose by 27.7 percent. Of the 29 cancers included in the analysis, nasopharyngeal and prostate cancers showed the fastest upward trend, whereas early-onset liver cancer exhibited the sharpest decrease. In the U.S., early-onset cancer rates rose 12.8 percent, while the incidence rate of individuals 50 and older declined.
Although the exact reasons for this alarming trend have not yet been identified, the researchers pointed to the following likely culprits as the main causes: dietary risk factors, including eating excessive red meat and sodium and not enough fruits and vegetables; alcohol consumption; and tobacco use.
Championing Opioid-Free Pain Management
According to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, more than 130 Americans die each day from opioid-related drug overdoses. Recognizing that alternative pain management protocols are needed to curtail this ongoing national problem, the state of Minnesota has created a website to identify and promote evidence-based, non-opioid and non-pharmacological options that use complementary and integrative methods.
As reported in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine, NoPainMN.org was established to provide user-friendly information, including a description of each modality, video demonstrations of the treatments and links to published research and additional online resources. Minnesota’s website covers a wide range of treatment options, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, psychology, rehabilitative therapies, movement classes like tai chi and qigong, and mind-body therapies such as biofeedback and music therapy. The website also includes a searchable list of more than 17,000 practitioners in the state.
Complementary Treatments for Kids With Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Treating children with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can be complex, and parents are looking for complementary and alternative therapies. A paper published in the journal Nutrients evaluated studies regarding the effect of herbal remedies and spices in youngsters with this painful disorder.
The researchers found that iberogast, or STW-5, an herbal remedy containing licorice, peppermint and chamomile, improved symptoms in children with functional gastrointestinal disorders including IBS, and that peppermint oil reduced the severity, duration and frequency of IBS pain. Peppermint oil’s primary benefit in IBS seems to be its anti-spasmodic effect, although more research is needed to understand its impact on the gut microbiome of pediatric IBS patients. Psyllium was also found to offer effective, short-term relief in children with IBS, but further studies are needed.
Although not yet studied for childhood IBS, remedies found to provide IBS symptom relief for adults are curcumin, the active component of the turmeric spice; fennel in combination with curcumin; and artichoke leaf extract.

by Sheila JulsonBack when Kathy Hatcher replied to an ad for an assistant at Dr. Joseph A. Perelli’s chiropractic practice, it was a decision that would lead to not just a new career, but also to a lifelong partner. The couple wed in 1997 and today, Hatcher and Dr. Perelli are not just husband and wife but also business partners, operating their wellness practices—Konnections Massage and Associated Chiropractic Sports & Health Center—under one roof in Whitehall, Pennsylvania.
“Massage therapy couples perfectly with chiropractic because you’re looking at the body structurally,” Hatcher explains. “The muscles, tendons and ligaments are attached to the bone, spine and joints. As a licensed massage therapist, I take care of soft tissue work, and the chiropractor makes sure that structurally, everything is in alignment.”
B efore pursuing a career as a chiropractor, Dr. Perelli was a high school teacher and athletic coach. Yet he was always intrigued by chiropractic as a natural approach to healthcare because his uncle was a chiropractor and he had always benefitted greatly from chiropractic care. He returned to school to study at Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Iowa. After graduation, he returned to Pennsylvania and opened Associated Chiropractic Sports & Health Center in 1988.
Education and chiropractic care go side-byside, Dr. Perelli notes, because he’s teaching people wellness and how to care for their bodies to prevent injuries or illnesses. He treats patients utilizing traditional chiropractic as well as the newer soft tissue techniques including the KST Arthrostim
instrument adjustments. “Those types of adjustments are more comfortable and much less aggressive than traditional chiropractic treatment methods,” says Dr. Perelli.
Dr. Perelli also specializes in athletic and sports injuries, and he treats many high school and college athletes. The facility has a full rehabilitation center on site to get patients “back in the game” again. He also provides care for workman’s compensation injuries, auto accidents and lower back and leg pain. He also has great success with addressing all types of headaches and neck pain.
Dr. Perelli emphasizes that Hatcher’s massage practice, Konnections Massage, is a big component to the patient’s total care. “In addition to her own private massage practice here on site, she also treats our chiropractic patients, so she knows their issues, she sees their x-rays and knows what type of chiropractic care they’re receiving,” he explains. “She has a good
grasp on the muscle components, and when I refer a patient, I can say ‘here are the x-rays and what I’m doing, and here are the areas where I think the patient needs attention.’ The patient is getting two-for-one care under one roof.”
Hatcher had worked in retail and in geriatric healthcare before working with Dr. Perelli, and she’d always been interested in alternative healthcare and teaching people preventive ways to stay healthy. She provides many types of massage therapy including deep tissue—one of the most commonly used massages—which addresses acute or chronic long-term pain by using a variety of strokes to reduce muscular stress and restore range-of-motion, balance and function. She also offers hot stone massage; chair massage; Lomi Lomi, a light pressure technique that originated in the South Pacific; and therapeutic massage for pregnant or geriatric patients.
Additional services include the ionic foot cleanse, a detoxifying treatment in which one sits with his or her feet submerged in a bath of ionized water that pulls out toxins through the pores in the feet. “We’re constantly exposed to toxins, whether it’s off-gassing from plastics, fumes and gasses from the workplace and our environment, or pesticides and other chemicals. Our world has become so toxic that our organs can’t detoxify quickly enough,” Hatcher explains. “The ionic foot cleanse stimulates organs to release those toxins, which are released into the water.”
The toxins turn the water dark brown, greenish or foamy, depending on which organ is detoxing. “In the days that follow, the organs continue to release toxins through sweating,
urination and defecation, and patients notice that aches and pains go away, they sleep better and even some cravings disappear. Cancer patients have also benefitted from detoxifying after chemotherapy sessions,” she says. The therapy usually requires six or more sessions, depending the patient and his or her wellness goals.
Th e LipoMelt Treatment is a Red Light therapy that mimics photosynthesis, letting the body absorb light on a cellular level to reproduce, regenerate and implement healing. Patients lie on a table and a light pad is applied to areas they want to treat. Sessions last about 30 minutes. Hatcher says the therapy heals acute injuries and chronic pain such as arthritis. “It’s a pharmaceutical-free pain relief system that can be used to treat any area of acute or chronic pain in the body,” Hatcher explains.
Hatcher notes that another bonus of LipoMelt is Body Sculpting that occurs when the Red Light is applied to fatty areas like the belly, hips, thighs or buttocks, is that fat cells open and release the contents of the cells, similar to a balloon deflating. After a session, the patient stands on a total vibration machine that shakes the whole body to stimulate the lymphatic system to begin eliminating fat from the body. Cumulative treatments result in inches lost. Hatcher says Red Light treatments can also help decrease fine lines and wrinkles—especially in the face —by stimulating collagen production.
Both Dr. Perelli and Hatcher approach wellness through an educational aspect and take time with each patient to find the ‘whys’ behind pain and illness. They also offer nutritional counseling, supplements and body cleansing products. “I think everyone has a responsibility for their health, and that’s why education is very important,” Dr. Perelli emphasizes. “We individualize care and make it fun, giving them information to make gradual, long-lasting changes, along with the tools to follow through.”
Dr. Perelli, a Lehigh Valley native, has gotten to know many people in the community through his work teaching, coaching and providing chiropractic care. “We try to create a family atmosphere, and helping people get better is not a job for me. It’s fun and I’m fulfilling a passion. I’m treating two and three generations of families, children, parents and grandparents, and I love what I do.”
Hatcher agrees. “I enjoy finding out about our patients’ lives and what they’re encountering, whether it is personal or professional, and learn of their stressors and health goals
so I can address them as a whole unit and help them understand why they’re not feeling well,” she says. “People open talk while on the massage table, and they discuss areas of their lives they want to improve, like nutrition, supplements, stress levels or drinking more water. I help educate them by making the connections toward whole health. And even if we can’t help them in our office, we will refer them out to someone who can to get them results and help them feel better.”
“I was fortunate and lucky to achieve the goals that were set out for me, and I’m happy to work side-by-side with my wife,” Dr. Perelli concludes.

Food Trends for 2024
What We’re Looking for at the Dinner Table
by Carrie JacksonFew factors are as important to overall wellness as our diet. Besides taste and nutritional value, food preferences are influenced by convenience, availability, cost and personal values. Trends are shifting away from fad diets to more balanced eating, as people across generations are focused on living healthier well into their golden years. Equally as urgent is a demand for more sustainable products and manufacturing practices as consumers become increasingly aware of the impact their food choices have on the planet.
Dr. Melinda Ring is the executive director of the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Northwestern University, in Chicago. As a leading center for integrative medicine, their team helps patients achieve optimal health through innovative, whole-person care. Ring says that personalized nutrition, plant-forward diets and longevity protocols are overtaking older trends like low-carbohydrate or high-fat fads.
“In recent years, there’s been a movement away from highly restrictive diets toward more balanced, sustainable eating patterns that emphasize whole foods over highly processed alternatives,” says Ring. “Interest in local food sources is growing, driven by concerns about
sustainability and food quality. While the pandemic highlighted concerns about access to healthy food for all, busy lifestyles continue to make convenience a key factor influencing food choices.”
Ring cites nutritional psychiatry as a burgeoning field. “Emerging research suggests a link between diet and mental health, with diets rich in fruits, vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids potentially benefiting mood and cognitive function,” she explains. Ring adds that there is an increasing focus on incorporating protein for overall health, as well as personalized nutrition, in which advances in genomics and biotechnology are used to tailor dietary recommendations to individual genetic, lifestyle and health factors.
Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, is a New York Times bestselling author and nationally recognized health expert. Her latest book, Everyday Snack Tray, outlines fun, flavorful and nutrient-dense charcuterie boards for every occasion. She asserts that members of Generation Z—those born in the late 1990s and early 2000s—are driving many of the current shifts in food and beverage choices.
“The sober movement is rapidly gaining momentum, with an influx of mocktails, non-alcoholic beer and zero-proof wines on the market,” she explains. “People in their
30s and older are realizing that alcohol interrupts their sleep and are looking for other ways to relax at night. They’re also moving away from caffeine, which has a long halflife, so while the body may feel tired at night, the brain is still triggered. Fast-casual restaurants and cafes have increased their selection of fruit-forward, caffeine-free drinks, and a new all-natural brew called figgee, made from ground figs, is emerging online.”
Zoomers tend to be more conscious of the connection between their food decisions and impacts on the planet, which explains why they are more likely to choose and demand sustainably grown and packaged products. “This generation is drawn to brands that have carbon buy-back programs or help sequester nitrogen in their manufacturing,” says Largeman-Roth. “While we’ve seen an influx of meat alternatives in the past, there’s starting to be a pushback against the ones with long ingredient lists that are highly processed. Rubi protein made from lemna, or duckweed [a free-floating, aquatic plant], is gaining popularity as a plant-based protein alternative. It contains nine essential amino acids and uses 10 times less water to grow than soybeans and 100 times less water than beef. And, people are turning to the root system of mushrooms, instead of the caps, as a higher protein source. Their versatility makes them ideal for nuggets, jerky and other substantial snacks.”
Consumers are looking for foods that can help regulate blood sugar, especially as more of the population is concerned about prediabetes. “People are continuing to choose nuts, beans and other high-protein boosts to refuel after a workout or in-between meals,” Largeman-Roth points out. “Products such as Good Measure bars, made of almonds, peanuts and pumpkin seeds, are emerging as nutrient-rich and satisfying snacks. Consumers also realize how important fiber is for gut optimization, skin quality and mental health. Perhaps most top-of-mind in a post-pandemic world, it’s vital for immune health, as well. Overall, people of all ages want products that make them feel better and fit into their lifestyle. A lot of boxes have to be checked for people to try a new product, and food manufacturers are stepping up.”
Perhaps taking a cue from the younger generation, members of Generation X—Americans born between 1965 and 1980—are pioneering a new approach to healthy aging to help them thrive in their diverse lifestyles. According to the global market research company Mintel, aging concerns that were once considered taboo, such as menopause, are now being openly discussed.
“The new focus for our aging society will be an extended healthspan—the period of
life spent in good health,” says Mintel Principal Analyst Jolene Ng. “This is an important shift, as population aging is a defining global trend of our time. By 2030, one in six people in the world will be aged 60 years and older, according to the World Health Organization. Brands need to consider the various nutritional, physical and mental health needs for middle-aged and older adults. Opportunities to improve healthspan include maintaining brain function with age and functional health solutions for common problems like disrupted sleep.”
Increasingly, Gen Xers aged 44 to 58 prioritize sleep as a tool for improving overall physical and emotional health. “Research has shown that total sleep time, sleep efficiency and deep sleep decrease with age,” says Ng. “Brands are focusing on innovating products with nutrients such as fiber or botanicals like lavender that can improve sleep quality. Products such as Bardo’s Calm snacks, which contain lemon balm and thyme, are emerging as a snack option for Gen Xers who are interested in trying food that supports relaxation.”
Priceless lifetime, life-changing whole health bene ts for less than the cost of a smoothie a week!
Many consumers are part of the “sandwich generation”, a term used to describe people in their 30s or 40s that are raising children while also caring for aging parents. Ng notes that brands are adjusting product lineups and marketing campaigns to address the specific requirements of these families. She expects to see more services like Magic Kitchen, which, she explains, is “a meal kit service that offers a range of healthy, dietitian-designed meals for families with different health needs, including seniors. Their objective is to bring families together during dinnertime, while respecting the specific dietary needs of individuals within the family unit. Brands also can help ease the stress and strain on these compound caregivers by offering convenience products and helpful tools for themselves and the loved ones they care for.”
Historically, food and beverages have been a source of great pleasure and social interaction, and Mintel Food & Drink Director David Faulkner envisions this as a continuing trend. “Just as we saw during COVID-19, food and drink will be the go-to source of comfort for consumers, delivering precious moments of joy,” he says. “It will be all the more relevant during the worsening climate crisis for food and drink companies to position pleasurable products as necessities, not as guilty self-indulgences.”

Snakes as Pets
Fostering a Unique and Rewarding Relationship
by Ruth Roberts, DVM, CVA, CVH, CVFT, NANContrary to popular belief, snakes make excellent pets, providing the opportunity to connect with one of nature’s most enigmatic creatures. It can be both fun and calming to observe these scaly creatures up close as they navigate their terrarium-based habitats. Snakes are less demanding than dogs or cats because they do not require regular walks, consistent attention or even daily feeding.
Due to a slow metabolism, most adult snakes typically eat from once a week to every few weeks, depending on their species, age, size and health. Younger vipers may eat more often, while some large species may eat less frequently. Of course, as with any pet, prospective owners need to be prepared for the unique challenges and responsibilities of caring for their sinewy companion.
Adopting a Healthy Snake
Mariah Healey, a reptile husbandry specialist and owner of the online database ReptiFiles.com, provides the following tips for selecting a healthy snake.
• The eyes should be bright and clear. Cloudy eyes might occasionally occur when the snake is about to shed, but persistent cloudiness or signs of discharge can indicate health issues.
• The nostrils should be clear of obstructions. Blocked nostrils can be a sign of respiratory infection or other health problems.
• Breathing should be silent. Noticeable noise, such as wheezing or crackling during breathing, can be symptoms of respiratory issues.
• The snake should be alert and flick its tongue as it is handled. This is their way of exploring and sensing their environment. A lack of flicking or lethargic demeanor can be evidence of an illness.
• The body should feel smooth and muscular. An overly bony or excessively plump body can be a cause for concern.
• Constricting snakes should wrap firmly around a person’s arm without being aggressive. This is indicative of healthy muscle function and strength.
• There should be no lumps, scars or open wounds. These might point to past or present problems. The skin should also be free of any patches of stuck shed, which can lead to health complications.
• The vent, or cloaca, should be clean and sealed flush with the rest of the belly. Any signs of swelling, discharge or protrusion can be an indication of internal health problems.
• No mites or other external parasites should be present. Mites are small and can often be seen around the eyes, mouth and under the scales, appearing as tiny black or red dots.
Tips for Snake Care
Healey cautions that each snake species has different needs, and owners should learn about their animal’s unique requirements, rather than relying on so-called starter kits. Some species thrive in a humid environment, while others prefer drier conditions. Although many snakes eat rodents, some prefer birds, frogs or other reptiles. Some are active during the day, whereas others are nocturnal. Consult books, forums, breeders and websites about the snake to ensure proper care. Healey offers the following additional tips.
• Provide an enclosure that matches the snake’s length. Snakes can be deceptively large. Despite their slender build and ability
to coil up, they require enclosures that enable them to stretch fully. This is supported by a study from England’s Bristol Veterinary School, which involved 744 snake owners and indicated that such setups lead to healthier and more enriched lives.
• Make the enclosure high enough. Most land-dwelling snakes do well with two feet of height, but species that spend a significant time in trees should have at least four feet of height to accommodate their natural climbing behavior.
• Keep track of temperature and humidity. Snakes require a carefully controlled environment with specific temperature and humidity needs and regular monitoring to maintain a safe environment.
• Feed them prey. Snakes typically eat rodents or birds. Handling dead animals may be off-putting to some people.

• Find a specialized healthcare provider. Identifying health problems in snakes can be challenging. Although they may be harder to find and more expensive than general veterinarians, a specialized snake vet is preferable.

Seven Herbs to Grow, Eat and Heal
body,” says Clopton, who maintains a small deck herb garden in her Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, apartment.
A home herb garden boasts multiple environmental benefits, reducing our carbon footprint by eliminating the miles most herbs travel to reach the local grocery store, and eliminating pesticide use, if grown organically. Herbs are also great for attracting pollinators like bees, birds and butterflies to support a balanced and healthy ecosystem.
Great Herbs to Grow, E at and Heal
by April Thompson Marilyna from Getty Images Pro / CanvaProGrowing herbs at home has myriad benefits, enhancing health, boosting flavor and saving money while supporting local ecosystems. Home growing not only provides fresh herbs for cooking needs, but also offers access to easy and affordable natural remedies that can soothe common ailments.
“There is nothing like having your own fresh herbs in home-cooked meals. You can also dry and prep your own herbs for winter. Herbs retain more fragrance and vibrant color when you dry and process your own,” says Nadine Clopton, an herbalist who serves as regenerative education program manager for Rodale Institute.
Clopton likes to grow medicinal herbs like holy basil, as well as culinary herbs like rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano and basil, which serve as both nutrition and medicine. “They have minerals, vitamins and antioxidants, and are deeply supportive of different systems in the
“Rosemary is a multifaceted herb high in calcium,” says Linda Conroy, an herbalist, farmer and herb educator in Albion, Wisconsin. She uses it in topical lotions for pain relief, makes rosemary-infused salt for a flavor-booster and incorporates this pungent herb into her homemade feta cheese. Rosemary has been shown to enhance cognition and memory. It is also a natural mosquito repellant, making it a great addition to summer patios.
Sage is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and as a natural treatment for sore throats and coughs. “This easy-togrow perennial also helps attract pollinators,” says Conroy.
Dandelion is an excellent detoxifier that can help cleanse the liver and promote healthy digestion. “Every part of the dandelion is edible; it’s really a powerful, supportive herb. There are so many herbs like dandelion that grow wild around us, asking for our awareness and acknowledgment,” Clopton remarks.
Thyme has powerful antimicrobial properties that can help fend off bacterial infections. “It’s also anti-spasmodic and a natural expectorant, making it an excellent addition to cough remedies, which can save money compared to over-the-counter treatments,” Conroy advises.
Lemon balm is a natural stress reducer that can help reduce anxiety and promote
relaxation. “I love growing lemon balm and holy basil together,” says Clopton. “They act like a natural mosquito repellent, in addition to all their medicinal and culinary benefits.”
Chamomile is an essential herb for relaxation and digestion. Regular consumption of chamomile tea can help reduce anxiety and promote restful sleep. Conroy also uses this herb for topical applications like lotions, body washes, foot baths and even eyewashes to soothe sore, irritated eyes.
Garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties that can help fight infections. The bulb is also known to reduce blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. “Garlic, chives and other plants in the allium family are all important immune-system boosters,” says Conroy.
Getting Started
For first-time growers, an herb garden may sound intimidating, but with patience and care, it can flourish even in small, indoor spaces. Conroy recommends trying chives, as they are easy to sprout and thrive in a box or pot. She also suggests starting by growing just one herb at a time.
While Conroy grows her herbs from seed in her own greenhouse, it is perfectly acceptable to buy plants that already have a head start. Clopton suggests plants like lemon balm because it is easy to root from a cutting. She also recommends supplementing soil with organic compost to give plants an extra boost, and making sure growing containers have good drainage.
Adding herbs to an outdoor garden or indoor space is an easy way to shrink our carbon footprint and support pollinators for the good of the planet, all the while saving on groceries. Start small with an herb garden and enjoy the numerous health and other benefits herbs offer.
