My thoughts for the month

It feels like the same story every year, the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, and everyone begins the new year eager to get started on their goals. Most of us start out strong and there is a reason why the gymnasiums are always so crowded the first week of January, but most of us lose steam before the month is even over!

Why is that? Why do so many people (by some accounts, as many as 80% to 90%) lose their enthusiasm for their New Year’s resolutions and fail to see improvement by the time the next year rolls around? There have been many studies about this topic, with most experts concluding that the root cause of “resolution failure” stems from poorly planned goals. In other words, most of us just throw out a vague declaration, like “I want to lose weight” instead of “I’m going to lose 3lbs in the month of January, or “I want to save money” without identifying how much you want to save. You must be specific about your goal setting.

The result of such poor planning, of course, is that enthusiasm tends to fade rather quickly. Instead of working toward a pre-determined result, we end up spinning our wheels and trying to decide what to do instead of doing it. When the results don’t happen quickly, it’s just so easy to slide back into old patterns and forget about the goal altogether.

Setting goals helps trigger new behaviors, helps guide your focus, and helps you sustain that momentum in life. Goals also help align your focus and promote a sense of selfmastery. In the end, you can't manage what you don't measure, and you can't improve upon something that you don't properly manage.

Since waning enthusiasm is only natural, it’s important to find other ways to stay on track, throughout the new year. Try adding these 2 strategies to your repertoire and experience better results.

Get Help from Others

Studies show that people who are trying to make a change, whether it’s losing weight, quitting smoking, starting up or expanding a business, are more successful when they have another person who holds them accountable to their goals. It actually helps people become more successful when they have a support system in place.

Determine Milestones

Another common reason resolutions fail is that results aren’t always immediately apparent. In some cases, even though things are changing, they happen so subtly that they may be hard to notice. Therefore, setting intermediate milestones along the way to your goal can keep you motivated. For example, if you are trying to lose 60 pounds, reward yourself after every 15 pounds, or after you meet your workout goals for an entire month. By recognizing your achievements, you’ll want to keep going.

Many experts caution against setting resolutions, and instead recommend setting goals or intentions for the new year. Regardless of what we call it, maintaining enthusiasm is key to staying on track.

Use the techniques that work for you and make this year the one when you finally reach your goals!

Here’s wishing everyone a Happy, Healthy and goal achievements New Year!

Let Your Garden Shine!

Plan Your 2023 Edible Landscape with Bear Creek Organics

As the new year begins, we go to bed in the dark and wake up in the dark. The nights are long and cold, but every day is getting longer. You may think that the garden is done for the year. Out of sight, out of mind. But in fact, it’s the perfect time to curl up in front of the fire or the space heater with a cup of something hot and think back over the past year in the garden and evaluate. How did it go? What worked, and what didn’t? Did you have a list of goals? How did you do?

Landscaping

Or try something new. Do you want to add a berry patch to your yard or plant a fruit tree and build a food forest? How about a kitchen garden for salad greens and herbs? Are you tired of mowing your lawn? How about transforming it into a wildflower meadow? The bees and butterflies will thank you.

You can also plant a backyard orchard that produces baskets of homegrown organic fruits and berries to feed the whole family. Or keep the conventional landscape look while incorporating the same useful and productive fruits, nuts, berries, and native flowers. Dream a little. But don’t wait until Sumer to plan your project and make your plant lists.

Winter’s also the perfect time to dream a little about next year’s garden and landscape. Whether you want to fix a problem or try something new, now is the time to take note and take action.

What about that spot in your yard where water accumulates or that stubborn bare patch in what is supposed to be your lush front lawn? Maybe it’s time to do a little water management by building a swale and berm to direct water away from wet spots and direct it toward dry spots.

Ecological, Edible Lanndscappes

Winter is a great time to arrange a consultation and to work on a landscape plan with Richard Mitchell from Bear Creek Organics. Richie can help you troubleshoot how to fix your problem areas or plan your new projects. He can also help you find the perfect plants for your berry patch or food forest or kitchen garden. But you must start planning with him asap.

Each year Bear Creek Organics creates custom edible landscapes for a select number of clients who enjoy bountiful organic harvests of their favorite fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, and herbs. They succeed because they start planning with Richie early in the year and understand that edible landscaping is a fruitful journey. If the right steps are taken to plan and install your dream gardens, you too will enjoy bountiful organic harvests from your own home.

With 2022 now appearing as a disappearing memory in the rearview mirror, you may be glancing at your own body in the mirror and wishing that some of that unwanted fat would ALSO disappear!

Let us help you start off the New Year with a fresh new goal to improve your health and physical appearance! Our Chiropractic, Massage and Wellness office is running a never-before-been-offered special on body sculpting services utilizing a red light treatment program known as LIPOMELT. This is a quick, painless, non-invasive way to slim down and re-sculpt your body. The treatments are administered in a private room with the client lying comfortably on a treatment table with the targeted regions wrapped in large pads. For 30 minutes, infrared and far infrared light is administered to those body regions, forcing the fat cells to open up and begin draining their contents into the free space between the fat cells. From there the body’s lymphatic system takes over and removes the fat through natural bodily elimination. Once the client has dressed again, the visit concludes with a 10-minute session on a Total Body Vibration machine to tone the muscles and further stimulate the lymphatic system to eliminate the fat. Many clients see a measurable result in lost inches after only one treatment.

There are no special foods that must be consumed during this program, although the best results are obtained by refraining from alcohol consumption and high-carbohydrate intake. And as with all healthy weight loss or weight management programs, plenty of water consumption is important to flush the body of the excess fat and toxic waste that has accumulated over the years.

Unlike the damaging effects that occur in treatments that freeze body fat, or the bruising, pain and downtime resulting from liposuction, this fat-melting body-sculpting treatment is safe, effective and non-damaging to the body. This program can fit into your normal daily schedule as each visit is approximately 45-50 minutes. You can schedule up to 3 visits each week and, depending on your overall goal, you can complete the process in less than 6 weeks. Because multiple visits are needed to achieve the final results, the most popular packages are 12 or 18 session packages. More information can be obtained about this process by going to our website at www.konnectionsmassage.com and clicking on the Lipomelt Body Sculpting tab.

During the months of January and February 2023, we are offering the treatments for only $65/session for the 12 & 18 session packages. If you are interested in more information or to schedule your initial session, please contact our office at 610-266-6111 and mention CODE: LIPO2023. See ad, page 4.

This has brought the world to a state of imbalance. Driven by masculine energy, always doing, striving, competing. Confidence. Once your sample arrives in the laboratory, confidential results will be available from your secure online account within 2 to 5 days.

Through intuitive art, we make space in our lives. Holding space for our innermost selves as a priority. Experiencing flow state, which athletes call “the zone,” we increase performance, reduce stress, improve sleep, and in many other ways live a more empowered and inspired life. Better yet, it’s contagious. As others see us being inspired, they get inspired to break out of their status-quo box. Embracing the power to dream big, live free, and love more.

Lo and behold change happens. Just as Gandhi said, by being it.

Dr. Tan’s Balance Method: A Distal Approach to Acupuncture Treatment

Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan was an extraordinary acupuncturist who was devoted to sharing his system of acupuncture. He developed a simple and logical acupuncture strategy for treating a variety of pain and somatic complaints. Dr. Tan’s Balance Method uses channel theory to select points for healing. Points selected are primarily located on the arms, legs, and scalp and are located distally or away from the area of concern.

The first step in the process is to identify the affected channel. For example, carpal tunnel typically affects the Hand Jue Yin channel. The second step is to identify channels that balance the affected channel. In this example, one choice is the Foot Jue Yin channel. The third step is to select points that image the affected area. Imaging can mirror the area of concern- hand to foot, elbow to knee or a larger area can be mapped onto the limbs. For example, the entire body can be imaged on to the arms and legs with the umbilicus level with the elbow or knee. Since carpal tunnel mainly affects the wrist and hand, points on the ankle and foot balance the area of discomfort.

One benefit to using the Balance Method is that it is not necessary to needle when a patient is having pain. For patients who are experiencing a high level of pain, this can be a more comfortable alternative. Another benefit is points are primarily located on the arms and legs, so patients don’t need to undress in the open/community setting. Since there are multiple options for imaging points, back and torso complaints can also be treated using the arms, legs, and head.

Dr. Gerald H. Smith is the brainchild and originator of the Frequency Shop. Through intelligent evolution and his 52 plus years of clinical practice, he has integrated and developed a unique system whereby people can access frequency programs online. This one of kind delivery system now makes available healing frequencies via one’s smartphone, tablet, laptop, and desktop computer. The genius behind this technology utilizes universal frequencies plus digitally captured frequencies of natural remedies to heal the body. Food, vitamins, herbs, homeopathic remedies, and drugs all represent a matrix to carry frequencies into the body. Through the use of sophisticated electronic systems and software Dr. Smith has discovered how to digitally capture the essence of vitamins, minerals, homeopathic remedies, and even drugs to effect a healing response.

It has been said that necessity is the initiator for creativity. The Frequency Shop had its inception during the pandemic when our governmental authorities began suppressing availability of essential remedies to resolve the crisis. In addition to the pandemic, there also evolved a supply chain crisis, which made it difficult to obtain the needed remedies. The innovative concept of utilizing frequencies, which had its origin in the 1930s through the research of Dr. Royal Raymond Rife, provided a simple solution. An affordable, noninvasive healing modality was now available 24/7, via common electronic devices that could be accessed by anyone around the world. Parental Depression May Affect Childhood Development

According to a new study funded by the Welsh government, children that live with a parent that has depression are more likely to also develop depression and not achieve educational milestones. Information on children born in Wales from 1987 to 2018, as well as their parents, was used in the study.

The researchers found that living with a parent with depression is detrimental to a child’s outcome, but having a parent that has had a history of depression, even prior to the birth, increases the risk of depression and lowers the educational attainment of the child. The highest level of childhood depression risk was associated with exposure to a mother that had depression both before and after the birth of the child.

Please sign your proof and complete the following information: (Ad is shown at actual size. See second page for larger ads.)

The risk of failing school exams was highest when the child was exposed to either a mother or father (or another stable male figure) with a history of depression, both before and after the child’s birth. These results suggest that exposure to a chronically depressed parent(s) is important in determining if the child will develop depression and have trouble with schoolwork.

Other findings included: having no father figure in the child’s life resulted in a higher risk of childhood depression and poorer results in school, and having a father with depression was associated with poorer results in school.

Depression is an issue that impacts the entire family, not just an individual. Taking a whole-family approach to addressing mental health will help ensure positive outcomes for both parents and children in the long term.

A New Look at Saturated Fat

For decades, conventional wisdom has been that consuming saturated fat is a surefire way to sabotage cardiovascular health, clog arteries and advance the path to a heart attack. A new paper published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology looked at the relationship between consuming saturated fat and the development of cardiovascular disease by conducting a review of articles published between 2010 and 2021 on the subject. The researchers found there is no scientific ground to demonize saturated fat as a cause of cardiovascular disease, and saturated fat naturally occurring in nutrientdense foods can be safely included in the diet.

Two Cups of Tea May Avert Early Death

A few cups of black tea a day might help to avoid an early death, a study published in Annals of Internal Medicine suggests. Among nearly half a million adults ranging from 40 to 69 years old, those that consumed two or more cups of tea a day saw a modest, but lower risk for all causes of mortality over a median follow-up of more than 11 years. Participants of the large cohort study, called UK Biobank, self-reported tea intake from 2006 to 2010, while researchers noted mortality from all causes, including cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, stroke and respiratory disease. The researchers concluded that drinking more than two cups of tea per day can be part of a healthy diet.

Sea Soundscapes Help Regrow Oyster Reefs

In new research published in the Journal of Applied Ecology, Australian scientists amplified the natural sounds of the sea via underwater speakers, inducing baby oysters to swim toward desirable locations for regrowing oyster reefs. Thousands more larvae swam to those locations than to control areas to settle on bare rocks. Oyster reef restoration in Australia and globally is viewed as a way to re-establish healthy ecosystems. Shellfish filter and clean large volumes of water as they feed, and shell piles provide habitat for fish.

Many marine animals use sound to communicate over long distances, because it can carry more information than sight or smell underwater. Healthy reefs emit crackles and pops from shrimp and fish as they feed, and that makes oyster larvae aware of a healthy habitat for them to settle on a rock and begin growing their shell.

The researchers recorded sounds from the healthy Port Noarlunga Reef and played them underwater near two large reef restoration sites offshore from Adelaide and the Yorke Peninsula. They attracted up to 17,000 more oysters per square meter to these sites and close to four times more large oysters grew in the test areas over the next five months, further accelerating habitat growth.

Mechanical Devices Inefficient at Removing Ocean Plastic

https://ideas.unite.un.org/reboottheocean

A new study led by researchers from the International Marine Litter Research Unit at the UK University of Plymouth suggests that while mechanical devices like Seabin do remove plastics and other items of marine litter, the quantities can be comparatively low and they may trap marine organisms. Scientists have been studying the issue of marine microplastics for more than 20 years.

The Seabin device continuously takes in water via a submersible pump that is then filtered, returning clean water to the area while leaving the litter in a catch bag. Hundreds around the world are said to have captured more that 2.5 million kilograms of litter from calm, sheltered environments like marinas, ports and yacht clubs.

The study found that the equivalent to 58 items a day were collected, mainly comprised of plastic pellets, polystyrene balls and plastic fragments. The Seabin also captured one marine organism for every 3.6 items of litter, or around 13 a day, including sand eels, brown shrimp and crabs. Around 60 percent were found dead.

During the study, five manual trawls were conducted at the same marina using nets from pontoons or vessels which collected an average of 19.3 grams of litter during cleaning periods of up to five minutes. The Seabin only captured the equivalent of 0.0059 grams in the same time. The researchers say that based on their findings, the device was of minimal benefit at this location.

Our Helium Is Running Out

Liquid helium, the world’s coldest element, is needed to operate the magnets in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines. The high-resolution, 3-D images generated by this critical medical tool allow doctors to see details in the body that might not show up on X-rays, so that they can diagnose brain tumors, strokes, spinal cord injuries, liver disease and cancer.

Helium is a nonrenewable element found deep underground, and supplies are becoming harder to find for the Federal Helium Reserve, in Texas. Russia was gearing up to supply nearly a third of the world’s reservoir, but the war in Ukraine has halted trade.

Phil Kornbluth, president of Kornbluth Helium Consulting, says that four of five major U.S. helium suppliers are rationing the element, prioritizing the healthcare industry over less essential customers. Donna Craft, a regional construction manager for Premier, Inc., which contracts with helium suppliers for about 4,000 hospitals, says, “Helium is on allocation, for sure.”

Inside an MRI magnet, helium lets the current travel resistance-free. Harvard University physicists Amir Yacoby and Philip Kim shut down about half of their projects. Kim says, “There’s only a finite amount of helium in the Earth’s crust. Once it evaporates off, it’s completely lost into outer space.”

Dr. Kristen Reihman MD

Alternative Protocol for Treating Lyme Disease

After experiencing bouts of Lyme disease during her residency, Dr. Reihman found holistic methods of healing and recovery, which she shares with patients today through her holistic practice in Allentown and her e-book.

Dr. Reihman earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies, with a minor in communications and film, in 1992 from Yale University. After graduation, she went to China to teach English. She enjoyed Chinese food and culture and learned about modalities such as herbal medicine and acupuncture. After one year in China, she contracted appendicitis and was transported to Hong Kong for an emergency appendectomy.

“Being a foreigner in the middle of a health crisis was pretty shocking and eye opening,” she relates. “It made me realize how important it is to have a healing team that literally understands your language and your perspective.”

When she returned to the United States, Reihman was at a crossroad and didn’t know what to do with her life. Through encouragement from her boyfriend during a cross-country drive, she decided to go to medical school. She took pre-med classes and was accepted at Stanford School of Medicine, where she graduated in 2004. She moved to Pennsylvania to do a residency in family medicine at Lehigh Valley Hospital. During that time, a tick bit her. Although she had no obvious symptoms of Lyme disease, as a precaution, she put herself on doxycycline and seemed to have no further problems.

While still in residency, and after having her fourth child, Dr. Reihman became extremely fatigued. She contributed it to

the fact that she was in her early 40s and had nursed her infant for an entire year, along with stress from starting a new job. She eventually realized that the Lyme disease contracted previously was recurring. She calls that second bout her Near Death experience; she spent 3 months in bed, lost 30 pounds and was unable to participate in her family life in any meaningful way.

Through one of her patients also suffering from Lyme disease, Dr. Reihman learned about a whole realm of research and treatment options not taught in medical school. “I had a false belief that once you treat Lyme, it’s gone,” she says, “but I began to learn more about it on my patient’s behalf, and that turned out to change the trajectory of my entire professional life.”

One of those options was chlorine dioxide, or CD, a man-made gas. Dr. Reihman says CD can either be ingested orally or used topically as a way to oxidize and reduce the body’s pathogen load. Kerri Rivera, from whom Reihman learned about the effects of CD, has promoted is as

a tool to reduce pathogens such as yeast, parasites, and heavy metals.

Dr. Reihman says that CD eased her Herx reactions, or die-offs that can occur when treating Lyme. She notes that use of CD for healing purposes has been a bone of contention in mainstream and even integrative wellness arenas. “But as with any healing modality, any time you actively take apart pathogens, you creates inflammation which can temporarily make you feel worse. With good detoxification and drainage practices, you can avoid Herxing, or at least avoid the worst of it.”

Dr. Reihman believes Lyme and other autoimmune issues respond best to integrative protocols including naturopathy, herbal medicine, oxidative therapies and nutritional practices. “I address not just issues that undermine recovery in the physical body, such as food allergies or leaky gut, but I also look at limiting beliefs and emotional blocks to healing. I like to think of our cells as little minions taking orders directly from our thoughts and feelings,” she says.

As Dr. Reihman slowly got better, she decided that she wanted to be in an environment that promoted true healing and nurturing. In 2012, she left her job at the hospital and opened her own practice out of her living room. She instantly had a full patient roster comprised of people with chronic and acute Lyme, who wanted to learn about the tools she had used to recover herself, holistically. She shares her healing experiences in an informative new e-book, Life After Lyme: Revive Your Inner Rock Star and Achieve a Full Recovery, available at lifeafterlyme.net. The book covers every aspect of the complex disease. “It’s a comprehensive, D.I.Y recovery manual, and I also like to think it is like a supportive cheerleader on your healing team,” something she strives to be for every patient.

Associated Chiropractic Sports & Health Center and Konnections Massage Husband

and Wife Team Offers

One-stop Shop for Wellness

Back when Kathy Hatcher replied to an ad for an assistant at Dr. Joseph A. Perelli’s chiropractic practice, it was a decision that would lead to not just a new career, but also to a lifelong partner. The couple wed in 1997 and today, Hatcher and Dr. Perelli are not just husband and wife but also business partners, operating their wellness practices—Konnections Massage and Associated Chiropractic Sports & Health Center—under one roof in Whitehall, Pennsylvania.

“Massage therapy couples perfectly with chiropractic because you’re looking at the body structurally,” Hatcher explains. “The muscles, tendons and ligaments are attached to the bone, spine and joints. As a licensed massage therapist, I take care of soft tissue work, and the chiropractor makes sure that structurally, everything is in alignment.”

B efore pursuing a career as a chiropractor, Dr. Perelli was a high school teacher and athletic coach. Yet he was always intrigued by chiropractic as a natural approach to healthcare because his uncle was a chiropractor and he had always benefitted greatly from chiropractic care. He returned to school to study at Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Iowa. After gradu-

ation, he returned to Pennsylvania and opened Associated Chiropractic Sports & Health Center in 1988.

Education and chiropractic care go sideby-side, Dr. Perelli notes, because he’s teaching people wellness and how to care for their bodies to prevent injuries or illnesses. He treats patients utilizing traditional chiropractic as well as the newer soft tissue techniques including the KST Arthrostim instrument adjustments. “Those types of adjustments are more comfortable and much less aggressive than traditional chiropractic treatment methods,” says Dr. Perelli.

Dr. Perelli also specializes in athletic and sports injuries, and he treats many high school and college athletes. The facility has a full rehabilitation center on site to get patients “back in the game” again. He also provides care for workman’s compensation injuries, auto accidents and lower back and leg pain. He also has great success with addressing all types of headaches and neck pain.

Dr. Perelli emphasizes that Hatcher’s massage practice, Konnections Massage, is a big component to the patient’s total care. “In addition to her own private massage practice here on site, she also treats our chiropractic patients, so she knows their issues, she sees their x-rays and knows

what type of chiropractic care they’re receiving,” he explains. “She has a good grasp on the muscle components, and when I refer a patient, I can say ‘here are the x-rays and what I’m doing, and here are the areas where I think the patient needs attention.’ The patient is getting twofor-one care under one roof.”

Hatcher had worked in retail and in geriatric healthcare before working with Dr. Perelli, and she’d always been interested in alternative healthcare and teaching people preventive ways to stay healthy. She provides many types of massage therapy including deep tissue—one of the most commonly used massages—which addresses acute or chronic long-term pain by using a variety of strokes to reduce muscular stress and restore range-of-motion, balance and function. She also offers hot stone massage; chair massage; Lomi Lomi, a light pressure technique that originated in the South Pacific; and therapeutic massage for pregnant or geriatric patients.

Additional services include the ionic foot cleanse, a detoxifying treatment in which one sits with his or her feet submerged in a bath of ionized water that pulls out toxins through the pores in the feet. “We’re constantly exposed to toxins, whether it’s off-gassing from plastics, fumes and gasses from the workplace and our environment, or pesticides and other chemicals. Our world has become so toxic that our organs can’t detoxify quickly enough,” Hatcher explains. “The ionic foot cleanse stimulates organs to release those toxins, which are released into the water.”

The toxins turn the water dark brown, greenish or foamy, depending on which organ is detoxing. “In the days that follow, the organs continue to release toxins through sweating, urination and defecation, and patients notice that aches and pains go away, they sleep better and even some cravings disappear. Cancer patients have also benefitted from detoxifying after chemotherapy sessions,” she says. The therapy usually requires six or more sessions, depending the patient and his or her wellness goals.

The LipoMelt Treatment is a Red Light therapy that mimics photosynthesis, letting the body absorb light on a cellular

level to reproduce, regenerate and implement healing. Patients lie on a table and a light pad is applied to areas they want to treat. Sessions last about 30 minutes. Hatcher says the therapy heals acute injuries and chronic pain such as arthritis. “It’s a pharmaceutical-free pain relief system that can be used to treat any area of acute or chronic pain in the body,” Hatcher explains.

Hatcher notes that another bonus of LipoMelt is Body Sculpting that occurs when the Red Light is applied to fatty areas like the belly, hips, thighs or buttocks, is that fat cells open and release the contents of the cells, similar to a balloon deflating. After a session, the patient stands on a total vibration machine that shakes the whole body to stimulate the lymphatic system to begin eliminating fat from the body. Cumulative treatments result in inches lost. Hatcher says Red Light treatments can also help decrease fine lines and wrinkles—especially in the face —by stimulating collagen production.

B oth Dr. Perelli and Hatcher approach wellness through an educational aspect

and take time with each patient to find the ‘whys’ behind pain and illness. They also offer nutritional counseling, supplements and body cleansing products. “I think everyone has a responsibility for their health, and that’s why education is very important,” Dr. Perelli emphasizes. “We individualize care and make it fun, giving them information to make gradual, long-lasting changes, along with the tools to follow through.”

Dr. Perelli, a Lehigh Valley native, has gotten to know many people in the community through his work teaching, coaching and providing chiropractic care. “We try to create a family atmosphere, and helping people get better is not a job for me. It’s fun and I’m fulfilling a passion. I’m treating two and three generations of families, children, parents and grandparents, and I love what I do.”

Hatcher agrees. “I enjoy finding out about our patients’ lives and what they’re encountering, whether it is personal or professional, and learn of their stressors and health goals so I can address them as a

whole unit and help them understand why they’re not feeling well,” she says. “People open talk while on the massage table, and they discuss areas of their lives they want to improve, like nutrition, supplements, stress levels or drinking more water. I help educate them by making the connections toward whole health. And even if we can’t help them in our office, we will refer them out to someone who can to get them results and help them feel better.”

“I was fortunate and lucky to achieve the goals that were set out for me, and I’m happy to work side-by-side with my wife,” Dr. Perelli concludes.

Associated Chiropractic Sports & Health Center and Konnections Massage is located at 656 5th St., Whitehall. For more information, call 610-504-9131 or visit AssociatedChiropractic.com or KonnectionsMassage.com. See ad, page 4.

BRAIN POWER BOOSTERS

TIPS TO PRESERVE MEMORY AT ANY AGE

Although it is completely normal to feel like our memories are failing us as we get older, this is not the time to panic. Regardless of age, it is always possible to learn, store and recall information, and there are numerous practices we can adopt to nourish and optimize our brains. Whether we’re looking for the car keys in all the wrong places or experiencing way too many tip-of-the-tongue moments, it may be high time to adopt the brain-boosting recommendations by these four experts.

Eating for Cognitive Power

“Having a better memory now and in the future means taking care of your brain and

making the right lifestyle choices to slow down the aging process,” says Annie Fenn, M.D., founder of BrainHealthKitchen.com, who believes that what we choose to eat is one the most significant decisions we make each day.

Foods high in antioxidants like vitamins C and E, beta carotene and selenium have been shown to slow age-related memory loss. Think berries, grapes (which contain resveratrol, a memory-enhancing compound), beets, broccoli, almonds, avocados, carrots, eggs, salmon, onions and dark, leafy greens.

Avoid foods high in saturated and trans fats, which can increase “bad” cholesterol and lower “good” cholesterol. Studies find

that high cholesterol diets can increase the risk of memory loss, among other cognitive functions.

Whole grains and legumes like cracked wheat, whole-grain couscous and lentils are complex carbohydrates that boost the

brain by providing a steady, sustained supply of glucose, and are high in folate, the memory-boosting B vitamin.

Finally, don’t forget to include culinary herbs like curcumin, rosemary, saffron, oregano and mint. They all help support brain health, especially saffron, which contains a potent constituent called crocin that is associated with slowing cognitive decline in human and animal studies.

Brain-Nourishing Supplements and Stress Reduction

Wendy Warner, M.D., the founder of Medicine in Balance, an integrative healthcare practice in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, recommends Ginkgo biloba (one of the oldest living tree species in the world) and ginseng, which have both been found to help enhance memory with their neuroprotective and antioxidant effects. Noting that the brain works best with adequate nourishment, she asserts that these supplements can play a role in increasing blood circulation to the brain, thus improving its function.

Also on her list are Bacopa monnieri for its antioxidant capacity, Rhodiola rosea for its neuroprotective and antioxidant effects and licorice (Glycirrhiza glabra) for its ability to increase circulation in the central nervous system.

Warner recommends regular stress management techniques like yoga, qigong and tai chi as well, noting, “These all help lower inflammation and cortisol (an inflammatory stress hormone) and have been shown to improve memory.”

Medicinal Herbs for Mental Clarity

Heather Houskeeper is a certified herbalist, long-distance hiker and author. When venturing out into the wild, she is able to spot and identify hundreds of medicinal herbs, including her favorite, top five memory boosters, starting with Ginkgo biloba, as well as:

ROSEMARY (Rosmarinus officinalis) supports healthy blood flow to the brain. It can be enjoyed through food, tea or diffused as aromatherapy.

ASHWAGANDHA (Withania somnifera), traditionally ingested as food or tea, can support mental alertness, focus and clarity of mind. Mix ashwagandha powder with warm milk, hot water or broth.

HOLY

BASIL

(Ocimum tenuiflorum) is rich in antioxidants and supports cerebral circulation. Enjoy this delicious and fragrant herb as tea up to three times per day, use in cooking or take as a tincture.

GOTU KOLA (Centella asiatica) is a restorative herb that can support alertness and mental clarity. It is also popularly used as a tea, tincture or extract for up to 14 days at a time.

Slumber Savvy

Insufficient sleep can result in a variety of cognitive problems, including memory

loss. Those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a common sleep disorder condition that affects breathing, should not ignore it.

High-quality sleep is key to reactivating memories, especially recalling the names of people we’ve recently met, according to Northwestern University researchers. Other experts have reported a strong association between sleep and the formation of memories. Strive for uninterrupted and deep sleep, as follows:

n The ideal amount for most adults is between seven and nine hours a night.

n Wind down before bed with a consistent routine like reading, stretching or meditation.

n Keep the bedroom cool—somewhere around 65° F—and dark.

n Shut off all electronics.

n Avoid late-day caffeine, alcohol and spicy, heavy meals too close to bedtime.

Treating OSA is important to improve both sleep and brain health, says Thomas M. Holland, M.D., of the  Rush Institute for Healthy Aging, explaining, “Impaired sleep can lead to biochemical processes that can impact memory and cognition.”

More than Skin Deep

HEALING THE HEARTBREAK OF PSORIASIS

Psoriasis affects approximately 3 percent of the U.S. population.

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, founder of the Institute of Functional Medicine, the condition involves terrible suffering from scaly, itchy, inflamed and peeling skin; aching joints; burning genitals; broken nails; and the resulting depression that inevitably comes from such conditions—all of which explains why it is often referred to as “the heartbreak of psoriasis.”

The Cleveland Clinic describes psoriasis as an autoimmune condition of the skin. The immune system of people with psoriasis overreacts, causing inflammation and an overly rapid growth of new skin cells, which in turn causes a buildup on the sur-

face that creates the appearance of scaling, but the effects are much more significant than cosmetic.

Psoriasis is associated with psoriatic arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, lymphoma and cardiovascular disease. The National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) describes a link between psoriasis and cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome known as the “march of psoriasis”. Widespread inflammation may cause insulin resistance that triggers cells lining the blood vessels to malfunction, potentially leading to atherosclerosis and heart attack or stroke. The ailment also increases the risk of diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol.

Traditionally, psoriasis is treated with steroids and immunosuppressive drugs that can be harsh on the body and quite expensive while failing to address its root cause. Alternatively, the functional medicine approach is to treat the disease’s underlying causes: inflammation and triggers.

“I have psoriasis,” says Dr. Brad Shook, a chiropractic physician and member of The Institute of Functional Medicine. “I worked hard, and I’ve had my psoriasis and my autoimmunity under control and in remission. Through functional medicine, we can identify these drivers and help you to unwind this process, heal your body and then through that process of healing, you learn what the triggers were.”

Psoriasis Triggers

Functional medicine practitioners use the acronym STAIN to categorize five triggers that activate inflammation and psoriasis: stress, trauma or toxins, antigens or adverse food reactions, inflammation or infections and nutrition. Removing these triggers allows for healing.

Stress

Psoriatic patients report worsening of symptoms with stress. Modulating the reaction to stress and adding relaxation techniques can calm the inflammatory response. Practicing relaxing activities such as deep belly breathing, yoga, tai chi, prayer, meditation, visualization, Heartmath, massage, acupuncture or biofeedback can relieve stress. Exercise can also release endorphins that reduce pain perception.

Trauma or Toxins

The NPF states that physical trauma can

healing ways
24 Lehigh Valley Edition HealthyLehighValley.com

induce the development of psoriatic plaques. Toxins such as smoking and alcohol have been shown to increase the risk and severity of the disease. Obesity may also play a role in worsening symptoms because toxins are stored in fat, which emits inflammatory cytokines. It’s recommended to maintain ideal weight, abstain from smoking and alcohol consumption, and avoid trauma. Detoxifying and removing heavy metals can decrease the inflammatory response, as well.

Antigens or Adverse Food Reactions

Studies show that a Western diet rich in sugar and fat leads to an imbalance in gut bacteria known as dysbiosis. These harmful bacteria may contribute to psoriasis. Allergens or reactions to food can cause increased intestinal permeability, or leaky gut. The most common triggers tend to be wheat and dairy.

The Chopra Center recommends the 4 R Gut Healing program. Removing foods patients are sensitive to is key to calming down the immune system, as well as avoiding sugar, wheat, dairy and processed foods. To improve the gut, replace digestive enzymes, replenish healthy bacteria with a probiotic and repair the gut lining with butyrate or L glutamine.

Inflammation or Infections

To diminish inflammation, modify the diet to include more antiinflammatory omega-3 fats found in fish, avocado, nuts, seeds and olives, and fewer inflammatory omega-6 fats found in wheat and dairy. Look for and eradicate hidden infections. Decrease inflammation with a high-quality fish oil, curcumin, probiotics and a whole foods diet free of food sensitivities.

Nutrition

Studies show that having adequate amounts of vitamins A and D, fish oil, probiotics and zinc are important for maintaining both a healthy gut and a healthy immune response. Supplementation can be helpful in maintaining appropriate levels of these vital nutrients. Some patients using topical vitamin D products found they had effects similar to topical corticosteroids.

“When I started working at the Ultrawellness Center, I learned about how to address the root causes of a problem, not just the symptoms, and have found a new way of approaching psoriasis,” says Adonica Nichols, a psoriasis patient and a licensed practical nurse at the center, in Lenox, Massachusetts. “Living with psoriasis is still an everyday struggle for me, but I have implemented many of these changes in my diet and lifestyle over the past several months, and I am feeling better than I ever have.”

Psoriasis is a multifaceted, complex illness that may require a deeper look at the triggers. A functional medicine physician can offer a systematic approach to uncover and remove these triggers, helping patients heal from the heartbreak of psoriasis.

Cooling the Fire Within

HEALTHY EATING TIPS TO EASE CHRONIC INFLAMMATION

Putting more thought into what we eat and why may be among the most important factors in determining how long we live. Researchers in Norway recently compared the long-term effects of a typical Western diet to an optimal one, and their findings can be a source for inspiration. The optimal diet had a substantially higher intake of whole grains, legumes, fish, fruits, vegetables and a handful of nuts, while reducing red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages and refined grains.

According to their results, a sustained change from a typical Western diet to the better plan can make a big difference on life expectancy. Here are their predicted impacts on longevity for people after starting—and sticking to—an optimal diet:

Start at age 20—women add 8.4 to 12.3 years; men add 9.4 to 14.3 years

Start at age 60—women add 6.2 to 9.3 years; men add 6.8 to 10 years

Start at age 80—women and men add 3.4 years

So, it is never too late to start a positive activity.

This improved diet gets to the underlying causes of most of the reasons Americans die. According to the National Institutes of Health, 14 of the top 15 causes of death in 2019 were chronic inflammatory diseases. This means it is more than likely that the cause has existed for a long time under the surface (chronic), with too much inflammation for too long (inflammatory), affecting the brain, cardiovascular system, blood sugar system or wherever there is a genetic weak link (disease).

conscious eating
26 Lehigh Valley Edition HealthyLehighValley.com

Rather than ask what the ailment is, ask, “Where is the long-term, hidden inflammation coming from that is fueling this disease?”

Dr. George Slavich, founding director of the Laboratory for Stress Assessment and Research at the University of California in Los Angeles, says that understanding when inflammation promotes either good or poor health and how and when to intervene to reduce inflammation-related disease risk, “should be a top scientific and public priority.” Identifying and reducing individual triggers of inflammation opens a path to regenerating a healthier, younger individual.

Not all inflammation is bad. Timelimited increases in inflammation are critical for promoting wound healing and recovery, as well as reducing the spread of communicable infections. Humans would not have lived very long without a welldeveloped internal protection from threatening environmental triggers such as bugs, parasites, viruses, mold, fungus and bacteria. For better health outcomes, we need to address excessive systemic inflammation. There are many likely contributors to the fueling of inflammation, but one of the most common sources is what is on the end of our fork. Begin there.

LIFESTYLE HACK 1: If there is one prime directive for better health, it is to focus on living as much of an antiinflammatory lifestyle as possible. Become more aware of the daily environmental exposures that ramp up inflammatory genes. Know, for example, what chemicals are used on the soil in which the food is grown or sprayed with before it is harvested. Then, armed with this knowledge, choose a better alternative, like organic and regenerative organic foods. As enough anti-inflammatory messages are accumulated, a reversal in the direction of health is possible.

LIFESTYLE HACK 2: Food is the most common source of gasoline on the fire of inflammation. Dr. Deanna Minich, president of the American College of Nutrition, recommends the Rainbow Diet, which acts like a fire extinguisher to put out the excess inflammatory fire in the body. Selecting multiple colors of fruits and vegetables at every meal tempers the inflammatory cascade. Strive over time to eat 50 different fruits or vegetables per week.

Begin today. Just bringing up to awareness the question, “Is this food inflammatory or

anti-inflammatory?” will feed our health habits, and over time, healthier habits equal a healthier life.

Nutrition Course

NEXT COURSE STARTS February 19 2023 and finishes July 23, 2023

Become a Certified Nutrition Consultant

Ushering in a brand-new year can be filled with hope, but it can also feel as daunting as a blank sheet of paper. We might pause at the threshold with pen in hand, recounting past mistakes and failures, hesitant to make our mark. The unforeseen is like a stranger, easy to mistrust. Dreading the unknown can be a self-sabotaging habit that obstructs the view and keeps us wishing instead of living.

Nature’s great gift is her constancy of seasons, but she thrives on change. Despite the human propensity for clutching what is familiar and predictable, we do best by leaving the door ajar for the unexpected. If we are fortunate, we will have 12 more months to have another go at it.

Setting a place at the table for delight shifts our frequency from resistance to receiving our highest good, and swapping anxiety for excitement can be a spiritual practice during our most uncomfortable moments. Instead of making a resolution, what if we made the simple decision to not believe our fears?

With no concept of limitation or worry of scraped knees, we once learned to walk, happily undiscouraged when we stumbled.

That first spark of eager curiosity remains deep in our memory, not confined to youth. Embracing possibility this year can be a subtle, mantra-in-motion as we go through our days, a cellular willingness to expect an outcome tailored specifically for us. Here are some prompts for embracing possibility:

n On scraps of paper, write down 12 things you have postponed doing or trying and keep them in a special canister. Pull one out each month and follow through with joyful anticipation.

n Witness the sunrise once a week and designate it as an opportunity to open your heart and mind to the new and glorious.

n Change things up in the kitchen: Buy new dishes and donate the old to a local thrift store. Try a new food every week and explore herbs and spices not usually in the cupboard.

n Notice something in your daily surroundings that might have gone unnoticed before.

Natural Virus Killer

Copper can stop a virus

before it starts

Scientists have discovered a natural way to kill germs fast. Now thousands of people are using it against viruses and bacteria that cause illness.

Colds and many other illnesses start when viruses get in your nose and multiply. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

Hundreds of studies confirm copper kills viruses and bacteria almost instantly just by touch.

That’s why ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. They didn’t know about viruses and bacteria, but now we do.

“The antimicrobial activity of copper is well established.” National Institutes of Health.

Scientists say copper’s high conductance disrupts the electrical balance in a microbe cell and destroys it in seconds.

The EPA recommended hospitals use copper for touch surfaces like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.

The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. He made a smooth copper probe

with a tip to fit in the bottom of the nostril, where viruses collect.

When he felt a tickle in his nose like a cold about to start, he rubbed the copper gently in his nose for 60 seconds.

“It worked!” he exclaimed. “The cold never happened. I used to get 2-3 bad colds every year. Now I use my device whenever I feel a sign I am about to get sick.”

He hasn’t had a cold in 10 years.

Users say:

“It works! I love it!”

“I can’t believe how good my nose feels.”

“Is it supposed to work that fast?” “One of the best presents ever.” “Sixteen flights, not a sniffle!”

“Cold sores gone!”

“It saved me last holidays. The kids all got sick, but not me.”

“I am shocked! My sinus cleared, no more headache, no more congestion.”

“Best sleep I’ve had in years!”

After his first success with it, he asked relatives and friends to try it. They all said it worked, so he patented CopperZap® and put it on the market.

Soon hundreds of people had tried it. 99% said copper worked if they used it right away at the first sign of germs, like a tickle in the nose or a scratchy throat.

Longtime users say they haven’t been sick in years. They have less stress, less medical costs, and more time to enjoy life.

Soon people found other things they could use it against.

The handle is curved and textured to increase contact. Copper can kill germs picked up on fingers and hands after you touch things other people have touched.

The EPA says copper works just as well when tarnished.

Dr. Bill Keevil led one of the science teams. He placed millions of viruses on a copper surface. “They started to die literally as soon as they touched it.”

CopperZap® is made in the USA of pure copper. It has a 90-day full money back guarantee. Price $79.95. Get $10 off each CopperZap with code NATA34.

Natalie, who flew in from Chicago every 2 weeks to do the CNC program has passed her Certified Nutritional Consultant and can now proudly put the letters CNC after her name: I met Dr. Rodger (ND) before I took his Nutrition Course and it was his knowledge and experience that drew me to choose his class over others. I am so very glad I did as, I'm positive I wouldn't have learnt what I did with other teachers.  I'm not sure I would have had such an inspirational teacher with highly motivational lectures.

Alessandra, already had her nutritional degree, before she came on the course. I'm so proud of myself for finishing this the course and the exam. It was a great experience and I truly learned a lot. There are so many opportunities out there for me in my career to help others. I'll be attending the Natural Gourmet Institute which has a strong focus on a plant based diet.
