s I write this, the gift industry is busily preparing for another round of trade exhibitions - from The Exclusively Show in London to Glee at NEC Birmingham in June, and then looking forward to Home & Gift at Harrogate in July. Talking to suppliers and retailers for this issue, it’s clear that there is a positive mood in the air, following the recently announced results of The Giftware Association’s Gift of the Year Awards (see below) and The Greats Gift Retailer Awards. And there’s more cause for celebration soon, with two huge gifting opportunities around the corner: The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and Father’s Day. I caught up with eight indies to find out what they expect to be big sellers for these important dates in the gift calendar. I’ve also been talking to several retailers who have made bold moves - in different ways - over the past couple of months. British Garden Centres has launched a new Home department at its flagship branch; Bill Nettelfield, owner of Bill & Bert’s in Colchester, has recently expanded his shop by almost doubling its size; and our new columnist, Claire Leigh, owner of Two Ducks

in Woking, has introduced a fascinating fresh initiative in-store. Two other columns that I’m proud to say make their debut in this issue are from Retail100 - a new consultancy founded by four former John Lewis employees with 100 years of retail experience (including gifts) between them; and Bryony TaylorEdwards of Yarnton Home and Garden, who shares an intriguing insight into the world of buying. I have huge admiration for indies’ entrepreneurial spirit, and I’m always delighted when retailers are keen to take part in a feature within Gifts Today. As Claire Leigh says: “We’re an inventive little lot, aren’t we? The spirit of the shopkeeper is hard to keep down.” You are the people on the frontline, so hearing how you are doing, and finding out your opinions is vital to making the magazine useful for our readers. I’m always happy to hear from you, so if you’d like to take part in our Retailers’ Panel or have a news story to share, please do get in touch at clare@lemapublishing.co.uk or connect with me on LinkedIn. I look forward to hearing from you.

Gift of the Year Awards: the winners

O

n May 12, the great and the good of the giftware industry gathered at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London for the inaugural Gift Awards, recognising the very best products and retailers in the UK. The event marked a significant step forward for the UK gift industry, with The Giftware Association’s Gift of the Year Awards and The Greats Gift Retailer Awards joining forces in one ceremony. Attendees celebrated 22 category winners from Gift of the Year, as well as the finalists for The Greats, with Willsow taking home the coveted Judges’ Choice Award after winning in two other categories. Sarah Ward, CEO of The Giftware Association, said: “The two award programmes have seen both gift product excellence and retail prowess recognised and rewarded, and I can safely say that all the finalists have made our industry proud. I’m excited to see how the awards now shape the future of the finalists and winners, as they deserve every success

The views of the contributors expressed in this journal are not necessarily those of the publisher. Comments, letters and criticism are welcome.

coming their way. After such a tough few years, these awards have shown how resilient and creative our industry is.” She continued: “Awards like Gift of the Year and The Greats are vital for the health and prosperity of our industry, and there is no doubt that we are stronger together. By connecting both sides of the industry in such a meaningful way, we provide added value to all those who enter - and host a fantastic opportunity for those who attend to network, connect, and celebrate.” The Gift of the Year competition, which celebrates all that is new to the gift world, has grown significantly since it began 45 years ago, with the awards attracting more entries than ever before. The full list of finalists and winners can be found at www.giftoftheyear.co.uk.

Moonpig to acquire Buyagift Online greeting cards and gifting retailer Moonpig has announced the proposed acquisition of gift experiences platform Buyagift for £124 million. Moonpig said the move will deliver a step-change in its gifting proposition, unlocking the growing £6 billion UK gift experiences segment of the gifting market and the potential for digital delivery of gifts (‘gift-in-acard’) and the same-day gifting market. Moonpig CEO Nickyl Raithatha commented: “The proposed acquisition of Buyagift rapidly accelerates Moonpig Group’s journey to become the ultimate gifting companion. There is strong strategic rationale for the transaction, and compelling financial benefits. “Buyagift is profitable and highly cash generative, with a proven track record of strong growth and we are excited by the ways that we can further transform the business using Moonpig’s proven playbook. “We see significant potential for the cross-selling of gifting experiences to Moonpig’s loyal customers. We look forward to working with the Buyagift team to deliver an enhanced proposition for our customers and to create value for our shareholders.” The acquisition is expected to complete by the end of July.

Sock Academy sold to Jatania Holdings Paul Hughes and Gary Schaffer have announced the sale of Sock Academy Limited to London investment company Jatania Holdings Limited. Hertfordshire-based Sock Academy is a multi-award-winning designer and manufacturer of socks for an international client base. The company’s core products consist of innovative, quirky and colourful socks for the giftware sector. They operate as three brands including United Oddsocks, Cockney Spaniel and Cucamelon. Jatania Holdings is a holding company that provides a long-term home to businesses that have owners who want to step back or realise their equity. The familyowned firm’s approach is to work with the incumbent management and staff to preserve and grow the original founders’ legacy. Gary Schaffer, managing director and co-founder of Sock Academy, said: “When Paul Hughes and I decided it was the right time, finding the right company to take the helm was our top priority. We needed to know that the amazing team we have, and our wonderful customers, along with the products, culture, and the business as a whole would not change (well, only change for the better). And we found this with Jatania Holdings. They are an excellent company with the same values, beliefs, and passion for Sock Academy as we have, and only want it to grow and develop in the right way.” Yuvraj Jatania, CEO of Jatania Holdings, commented: “We are thrilled to welcome Sock Academy into our family, and we look forward to working with the existing team, customers and suppliers to grow the business together. Gary and Paul have built a fantastic company and our priority is to preserve their legacy and build on it further in a responsible way. It’s very much business as usual and we are excited about what the future holds for both Sock Academy and Jatania Holdings.”

St. Eval at No. 10 Downing Street Cornish candle manufacturer St. Eval was invited to No. 10 Downing Street on May 9 to take part in a Spring Showcase event hosted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to champion British businesses. Ten small companies were invited from all four corners of the UK and held market stalls to show off their most popular products. St. Eval highlighted its range of sustainably produced, nature-inspired products to the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers alongside VIP guests at the Showcase, which was the first Spring event of its kind. As a 2021 winner of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, this was a great opportunity for St. Eval to share its sustainability credentials and promote its beliefs in using business as a force for good in the world. Nestled on a farm in North Cornwall, St. Eval has been sustainably creating high-quality candles, home fragrance, and hand and body care, for more than 28 years. The company produces its own sustainable energy via wind, solar and biomass, helping to reduce its carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Over the past year, St. Eval has been expanding its office and factory building on the farm as part of its growth plans, powered by renewable energy. The firm is also creating a wildlife conservation area and pond to cultivate biodiversity and a haven for nature to flourish.

Let’s talk about… gift buying Bryony Taylor-Edwards looks forward to sharing some of the ups and downs of life as a gift buyer with Gifts Today readers

I

’m Bryony, the gift, home, and food buyer at Yarnton Home and Garden. A stunning home and garden concept store located north of Oxford and bordering the pretty Cotswolds,Yarnton Home and Garden sits on a 13-acre site, just off the A44. It’s a large store, hosting an indoor and outdoor plants area, a wonderful Magic Garden play barn, a café - and, of course, a home and gift department.

“Everyone I have met in the industry has been positive, inspiring, and welcoming” When I was approached to write this column, I was quite taken aback. I’m relatively new to gift buying and I had not even considered writing about it! Then I stopped to think and realised that shopping and writing are two of my favourite things. So, I’m delighted to join Gifts Today as a columnist.

My introduction to buying happened by chance. I was hired four years ago to help rebrand Yarnton Home and Garden and put in place a marketing strategy. It was clear to me that something was missing - an essential ‘lifestyle’ element. In other words, there was very little by way of a gift offer, and this needed addressing. I hurried off to the powersthat-be and made the case as to why I thought a gift offer was so important. My message centred on how much gifts bring to a retail space. The category attracts a wide range of customers, brings interest and enjoyment, and we can tell our story as a business via the gifts we choose to buy and sell. And, of course, gifts make brilliant commercial sense.

On a mission Long story short, they said go for it! Little did I know at this point that my suggested idea of three tables of gifts at till points would grow into a whole new department and an online shop, all post-pandemic. My mission was now one of scale.

Teamwork makes the dream work and we got stuck in. The result, which is still very much a work in progress, is a stunning home and gift department. We offer brands such as Present Time and Bloomingville who take the role of brand partners. Alongside them, we now have a comprehensive gift offer across many categories including home and interiors, bath & body, botanical gifts, books, accessories, luxury food, and toys. And gifts have done exactly what I hoped: attracted new people,

enhanced the customer experience, and increased the customer time in-store. It has also driven up our average basket value. Do I love my job as a gift buyer? Yes, 100%. Why? Because of the incredible people I have met on this journey, from big suppliers to small, from local to national. Everyone I have met in the industry has been positive, inspiring, and welcoming. I look forward to sharing with you some of the ups and downs of life as a gift buyer.

OPINION

‘Never waste a crisis’ Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira (British Independent Retailers Association), discusses how current economic challenges can present real opportunities for businesses

W

e have been warning for some time that high street retailers are facing a tsunami of business cost increases - energy up by 250-300%, rates up by 100%, labour costs up by 10% - and then there is the supply chain inflation. Only the other week I discussed this with the business minister, and while there is sympathy, there is little action from the government. In management there is a phrase: ‘Never waste a crisis.’ I think independent retailers, faced with the challenges outlined above, need to take that phrase to heart. The cost of energy will not reduce in the near future and, if anything, it is likely to increase even more. So, businesses now need to take the steps to reduce energy usage. Obvious, I know, but the advantage of focusing on this area is that retailers can also strengthen their

10 Gifts Today

own ‘green’ credentials and become part of the positive trend for retailing sustainability. It’s not all gloom in retail, and the drive toward sustainable retailing is becoming a real opportunity for businesses. I’ve spoken to several indie retailers about their approach to reducing their carbon footprint. In

“Combine a more efficient way of running your business with sustainable supply chains and products, and I believe that indie retailers could be onto a winning retail offering”

reality, retailers have to focus on areas they can control directly, and then work with the supply chain to create further sustainable options, and ultimately increase sales. Every business can reduce its costs, from reducing staff hours to using low energy bulbs. There are grants and funds available to businesses to introduce energy saving changes into the premises. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg (a suitable analogy for global warming!) as businesses need to review their opening hours, temperature control, and any number of small actions that collectively make a bigger difference. Combine a more efficient way of running your business with sustainable supply chains and products, and I believe that indie retailers could be onto a winning retail offering. All the recent research suggests that consumers are more aware of environmental issues and want to make informed choices, especially when it comes to environmental impact. The large brands are already working hard and spending lots of money to present their ‘green side’. Indie retailers don’t need to spend lots of money to achieve the same thing, because the local consumer will respond much quicker to strong local messaging on the high street. The sustainability message can also be enhanced by not using plastic in packaging. The plastic packaging tax will soon be with us. I don’t expect this to impact on the smaller retailers, but steps taken to remove plastic would enhance the drive to sustainability. Many smaller retailers re-use the

CEO Andrew Greenacre

packaging they have received from suppliers, which gives a strong message to shoppers about their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. We have a crisis with the cost of energy. We have an opportunity with sustainable retailing. This is one of those occasions when short term action taken to address the crisis can enhance the longer-term business opportunity for increasing sales and profits. I don’t wish to underplay the energy crisis - it is real and potentially very damaging. However, there is this opportunity to refocus your business in line with consumer expectations and find a way of surviving and prospering.

estled in a corner of rural Lancashire, artist and illustrator Emma Sutton inspired by the animals, flowers and fauna around her - founded Mosney Mill five years ago. Since then, the company has grown and has a proven footing in the textile, ceramic, gift and stationery markets. Reflecting on her five years developing the firm, Emma has been overwhelmed by the way in which independent retailers, farm shops and garden centres have responded to the Mosney Mill range. She says: “My aim has always been to produce high quality products for the home and giftware market while supporting British manufacturing wherever possible. Working closely with my manufacturers has enabled me to develop excellent relationships and to get products tailored to my exact design specifications.” She continues: “Seven years ago, my family and I moved onto an old overgrown market garden. The land was teeming with wildlife, and this led to my drawings that resulted in Mosney Mill being founded. An archaeological survey of the site revealed that it had formerly been a printworks. Mosney Printworks was where the first calico printing press able to print six colours simultaneously was invented and used. 12 Gifts Today

A new chapter “From that point, I looked for a way I could bring a new chapter to Mosney. We are really proud of the heritage of Mosney and, using my illustrations of the wildlife we are lucky enough to see each day in the grounds, we developed a range of kitchen textiles. These have become a staple of the Mosney Mill

“My aim has always been to produce high quality products for the home and giftware market while supporting British manufacturing wherever possible” range and are printed and manufactured in the UK using organic cotton and vegan dyes. “Today I still draw from my studio overlooking the fields where two centuries ago yards of calico were dried on the land. I can also view our wildflower meadow and chicken coop where I can observe the changing seasons and all that they bring with them.”

“Speaking to customers and getting their feedback is incredibly important to me and the development of Mosney Mill”

Homestyle Always ready to listen to the views of her customers, Emma will be launching a new range of homestyle products at Home & Gift on Stand DP1B90. “Speaking to customers and getting their feedback is incredibly important to me and the development of Mosney Mill,” she explains. “Retailers are hugely complimentary about our high-quality textile and ceramic range and started to ask for homestyle products that would work alongside these. “Using the proven manufacturing skills of The Giggle Gift Company based in Yorkshire, we will be showcasing a range of wooden chalkboards and clocks that incorporate my distinctive wildlife illustrations and are practical whilst working well in many home interiors. Alongside these we have also developed a range of 15cm hanging wooden plaques with illustrations and complimentary sayings, which I feel will be a sure-fire winner with retailers and customers alike.” Introduced over two years ago, Mosney Mill’s UK-manufactured melamine range has also increased with new shapes and designs introduced to its ever-popular coaster and memo board range, which now includes mini chopping boards and glass protectors in many of Emma’s favourite designs. Mosney Mill’s Wildflower Seed cards continue to be in high demand. When planted the Wildflower seed card produces a bunch of wildflowers – thereby providing a card and a gift to the recipient. Four new designs now join the existing range of 22 cards and retailers can choose from a beautifully illustrated countertop point-of-sale or a top-up offer which includes additional cards and free posting.

Green credentials Care for the environment has always been at the heart of Mosney Mill. Emma and her family have created a haven for the wildlife that call Mosney their home, with meadows and ponds providing safe nesting areas for ducks, geese and pheasants. The offices and stockrooms utilise solar electricity for lighting and ground source energy for heating. The wildflower seed cards are protected by a biodegradable compostable outer and Mosney’s dedicated packing team make sure every order is packed with care and attention using paper and cardboard that is FSC accredited.

Exciting times These are exciting times for Mosney Mill as Emma and her team develop new products and ranges that they are keen to share with customers old and new. They look forward to meeting you at Harrogate to showcase their new and existing ranges. Make sure you visit them at DP1B90

Diary of a gift shop Claire Leigh, owner of Two Ducks in Woking, believes taking a holiday is a surefire way of coming up with some fresh business initiatives

Y

ou know that feeling when you finally take a break from your business, and it gets to day five of seven of your holiday, and you think ‘finally, I’m relaxed’? Day six comes and your brain is already racing with what you have to do on day eight: what problems you might need to sort on your return, what plans you have to ensure the rest of summer is successful, and what buying you need to do for the beloved Christmas season! At least I feel fresh and ready for the challenge. Ask yourself: when did you last take a week or two out of your business? I may have only been in retail for 10 years, but I’m pretty sure the last three have been some

14 Gifts Today

of the most challenging the industry has ever faced. Brexit and customs issues, a global pandemic, transport issues, and now a war - accompanied by a constant conversation reminding us how little money we all have to spend. Hoorah.

“We’re an inventive little lot, aren’t we? The spirit of the shopkeeper is hard to keep down” But we’re an inventive little lot, aren’t we? The spirit of the shopkeeper is hard to keep down. And a holiday (if you can get the staff cover) is a surefire way of coming up with some fresh initiatives and a different way of looking at things. The last time I had a little break I came up with a new idea. We launched it in January and I’m pretty proud of it. It’s not the typical thing you might see a gift store doing. We introduced a monthly meeting called ‘the menopower cafe’ to talk all things menopause. Our customers are 95% female, mainly aged around 30-60, and will all go through the menopause in one way or another. Many suffer very badly with symptoms and it’s often a topic of conversation in store as we all laugh (and cry) about our ‘brain fog’, ‘achy bones’, ‘bloating’, ‘loss of libido’,

‘anxiety’ and ‘poor sleep’. It’s been a totally sell-out event. To date, it’s been attended mainly by women aged 40 to 55. However, it’s open to all ages and both sexes - whoever wants to know and understand more - either about what their body will go through, or what their partner is going through. We have secured expert speakers/ facilitators for each event who have been willing to offer their services for free, in return for an introduction to our engaged audience. So far, we have hosted specialists in skincare, sex, nutrition, natural supplements, healing and self-care, and we plan to cover exercise, HRT, sleep and Chinese medicine in the future. You may be wondering: how on earth does holding a monthly menopause-themed cafe bring in those all-important dollars? Well, it doesn’t. Not directly. And it’s not designed to. It’s designed to generate trust and demonstrate that we’re not just after our customers’ money. It’s to say: ‘You’re important to us and your concerns matter.’ The meetings deepen those crucial relationships, and, in turn, customers come to the shop wanting to give back - wanting to support the place that’s supporting them. I’m hoping it’s what Mary Portas would call ‘the Kindness Economy’. We need to present ourselves to our customers in the best

way possible and, as Emily Shaw, managing director of Tribe Digital Agency [a digital marketing and web development agency that specialises in ecommerce] says, ‘adding social value is now intrinsic to business success’. Consumers want more from the companies they spend with, from experience-led retail to a guiltfree, convenience-led approach to a product purchase. Well, we’ve been told. Lots to think about! I would love to hear your thoughts…

designs. In complement to its core aesthetics, this season Bizzotto’s interior collection showcases three key trends: Botanical, Boho Chic, and New Memphis. The Botanical trend stands against the unobtainable conception that beauty is defined by symmetry, scarcity and refinement, instead embracing wild, eccentric and unpolished aesthetics. The trend is created by embracing the holistic philosophies of biophilic design, which

“Bizzotto is looking forward to creating relationships with exciting independent businesses across the UK and Ireland” is founded upon mankind’s innate desire to be surrounded within elements of nature, which fuels positive wellbeing. The 2022 interior season presents the Kant collection. Showcasing the inherent idiosyncrasies of natural materials, the collection is constructed of a jigsaw of geometric sheesham hexagonal plates. Kant presents a series of sideboards, a television stand, console table, bedside table and a collection of bookshelves, which effortlessly showcase the inherently divine form of natural design. Inspired by global design, the Boho Chic trend

utilises a collage of materials and textures with eccentric form and a vibrant colour palette to introduce character and charm into home spaces. Boho Chic is encapsulated in Bizzotto’s Lampok collection. Create a laid-back home oasis with the relaxed aesthetic of Lampok’s teaks architecture, which is supported by a structure of high-quality rattan imitation polyweave surfaces. This design is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. In an explosion of colour and geometry, the New Memphis trend exudes effortless metropolitan chic. Attributed to the style of the Memphis group, this trend is a wonderfully bold disharmonious harmony: large scale abstract oil painted canvas and contemporary metal coffee tables are complemented by art deco style cabinets and pop art inspired accessories. Bizzotto curates a festive wonderland in its 2022 Christmas catalogue, which presents more than 7,000 new seasonal designs. Highlighting a classic and playful aesthetic, the Christmas collection showcases an eclectic collection of distinctive tree decorations and baubles, from traditional solid colour glass baubles to quirky novelty designs, to help curate the perfect wintertime aesthetic. To stage its decorations, Bizzotto also presents a collection of faux pine trees in a variety of styles and sizes, as well as yuletide wreaths and frosted garlands, to create a beautiful Christmas display. FairFocus Glee

Get set for a summer festival feel! Glee event director Matthew Mein gives us the lowdown on this year’s Glee show

“Whether gift buyers are looking for established brands, emerging talent, or access to the latest innovations, Glee has it all and so much more”

18 Gifts Today

What makes Glee different from other trade exhibitions in the buying calendar? Glee is the most important event for the gardening, leisure and lifestyle community, and is the UK’s leading garden and outdoor living trade show. Each year, Glee presents the most exciting brands, innovative products, and inspiring garden, home and gift retail insights. Bringing together the whole of the industry under one roof, the annual exhibition acts as a central hub for face-to-face trading, networking, and the growth of new ideas. How will you make this the best Glee yet? After the huge success of Glee 2021 as the first in-person event in two years, we’re determined to build on this momentum, especially as the industry continues to witness unprecedented growth. Benefitting from a new dateline - the

biggest move that has taken place in Glee’s 47year history - that is better designed to support the needs of manufacturers and renewed buying cycles, the 2022 edition will take place with a newly cultivated experience. It’s going to be one to remember! Is there anything new this year that visitors should look out for? With a new mid-summer date, Glee is set to benefit from a summer festival feel unlike never before. Not only will retailers be better armed with their range needs for the year ahead following the peak spring sales period, but the June timing will provide outdoor entertaining brands with a chance to shine thanks to Glee’s new outdoor demonstration area, aptly known as Fire, Grill & Chill. A first for Glee, this dedicated section - located in the outdoor area at the rear of Hall 20 - will create a central networking hub where suppliers of outdoor cooking solutions will create a mouthwatering backdrop. The wider outdoor entertaining portfolio of products including fire pits and patio heaters will also debut in this area, making for an unrivalled interactive showcase. In addition, Glee will continue to be a hotbed for all the latest product innovations to hit the market. Whether it’s new additions for the autumn sales period, updates to bestsellers or even trendled innovation set to shape spend in 2023, Glee will be home to it all.

FairFocus Glee

How many exhibitors and visitors are you expecting? The appetite for Glee 2022 has outstripped any of our expectations. We expect to welcome more than 400 exhibitors, of which an estimated 40% have never been seen before at the show, making this year’s event bigger and more vibrant than before, proving that our sector is stronger than ever - and that innovation is helping to create an exciting future for gardening. Visitor wise, as always, we know Glee will attract thousands of quality buyers, buying teams and owner operators from the multiple and garden centre sector, as well as high street stores, ecommerce giants, home and gift retailers, plus representatives from builders’ merchants, garden designers and landscapers. What product sectors can visitors expect to find? Featuring eight dedicated show sectors - Garden Care; Landscaping & Garden Decoration; Food & Catering; Retail Experience & Services; Outdoor Entertaining; Home, Gift & Clothing; Plants; and PAW for pet and animal wellbeing, Glee will be home to thousands of product innovations and merchandising support tools to ensure the 2023 sales season is the most exciting yet. What gift companies will be exhibiting? Home, Gift & Clothing is a thriving section of Glee, and this year will be no different. Returning brands include Woodmansterne with its new plastic-free range; APAC, the distributor of Bolsius Candles; sock specialist HJ Hall; Tilnar Art, offering environmentally friendly and Fair Trade products; and the multi-award winning Willsow, with its range of plantable children’s books. New brands set to debut at Home, Gift & Clothing include VENT for Change, with its range of ethical and eco-friendly stationery; organic tea supplier English Tea Shop; sustainable ladies’ fashion expert M&Co; indoor play specialist Kidzplay; Summit/PMS International with its selection of camping equipment; and UK Greetings, with its range of award-winning greeting cards, gift dressing and social expressions. Can you tell us about any initiatives at the show? This year’s edition will welcome a number of new initiatives, all designed to help the show’s exhibitors and visitors ‘give back’ and protect the planet, reduce waste, and raise funds for the industry’s charity, Greenfingers. With sustainability at the centre of Glee, we have recently established a partnership with Grow My Tree, which works with local partners in countries in the Global South to plant trees at scale, for 18 Gifts Today

reasonable costs, and with an ethical codex. Through this partnership, we are giving each attendee the chance to ‘plant’ a free tree. Floral Thursday – our special fundraising event on behalf of Greenfingers - will be returning on the final day of Glee. This event sees thousands of visitors and exhibitors come together to show their ‘flower power’ in aid of Greenfingers’ ongoing fundraising activities. Anyone that has reached for the floral clothing - from ties to socks to shirts and suits - is invited to buy a raffle ticket which will enter them into a prize draw to win fabulous prizes while, more importantly, helping to top up the fundraising total for the charity. Glee will also be working with Event Cycle to help exhibitors remove and repurpose any items that otherwise would have been thrown away. Items donated by exhibitors are given to charity and community groups, as well as back into the events industry. Exhibitors can find out more about this initiative by visiting the Exhibitor Manual. Finally, we are excited to welcome back the Young People in Horticulture Association (YPHA) and provide it with a platform to promote the work of the Association to those aged under 35 in the horticulture industry. Although the government has removed remaining domestic Covid restrictions in England, do you have any plans in place for visitors and exhibitors to still follow basic safety measures? While Covid restrictions have now been lifted in the UK, to ensure the health and safety of everyone, we will continue to work in line with the Association of Event Organisers’ ‘All Secure Standard’ alongside government advice. This includes not attending should you display any symptoms of Covid-19 or if you test positive. While mask wearing is no longer mandatory, Glee will remain a mask-friendly event. Hand sanitising stations will be available throughout the venue and increased cleaning regimes, particularly in high traffic touchpoints, will continue to take place. Additionally, the NEC’s ventilation system has been upgraded to high efficiency F7 media, which will circulate clean and safe air. What’s your earliest memory of Glee? My earliest memory is from 2006 - the year I joined the team. I recall being at the NEC and seeing the volume of the halls and the

layout that was so unique to Glee, together creating a hugely impressive event. The show also highlighted to me just how great a sector garden retail is, and how much I wanted to be part of it. Finally, why should a gift buyer consider attending Glee? Despite the pressures of the last few years, the popularity of gifts, homeware and outdoor clothing shows no sign of abating, helping to keep tills ringing year-round as consumers look to optimise key gifting events and add value to their homes and gardens with stylish accessories. At Glee 2022, this popularity will be evident within the ever-expanding Home, Gift & Clothing section. Gift buyers will be able to access a wide range of brands offering everything from outdoor clothing ranges and picnicware to seasonal decorations, games, toys and books, as well as complementary brands and products from Glee’s wider offering. What’s more, all of these exhibiting brands are ready and willing to do business with gift buyers from both garden centres and gift shops, with a combined offering that is designed to work for both this season and beyond, thanks to our new dateline which has positioned the show at a more convenient time within the annual buying cycle. Whether gift buyers are looking for established brands, emerging talent, or access to the latest innovations, Glee has it all and so much more.

Focus on... PTMD

New season,

new styles PTMD collection is an independent design house exclusively for the independents. With a boundless love for innovation and craftsmanship, this Dutch lifestyle brand travels all over the world to collaborate with exceptional artists to create its signature rebellious luxury aesthetic

L

aunching in early June, PTMD’s new season showcases thousands of distinctive designs across its interior, furniture, faux and catalogues. This season, it introduces three key trends across its collections: Amorphous, Eccentric, and Earth.

Amorphous

PTMD’s signature houseplant pot collection is an eclectic collision of contrasts. This season, it embraces distinctive candied toned amorphous pots which meet hammered aluminium planters, offset amongst organically textured maxi pots and luxurious fauna print vessels. The signature pot collection features designs inspired by the Amorphous aesthetic, which stands against rigid structure and prohibitions. This trend intermingles sumptuously smooth glazes, curvaceous form and alluring colour hues. PTMD encapsulates the spirit of the Amorphous aesthetic in its ceramic Neda collection, whose playfully curvaceous shape is lacquered in a luscious blush, mint and vanilla glaze. Available in eight sizes and three colourways, the Neda design is rich in texture, allowing each piece to be unique.

Eccentric

PTMD’s lighting design epitomises its Eccentric trend, which is a celebration of adventure, discovery and idiosyncrasy showcased through grandiose art deco inspired glass light chandeliers, offset amongst cultivated natural pendants, which meet biophilic candelabras and playful glass LED lamps. Encapsulating Eccentric, PTMD’s Asther design features an irregular shuttered iron structure which plays with light and form.

Earth

The S/S22 collection of home accessories seeks to create positive interior spaces with unique designled pieces which evoke personality. Its collection of interior creations epitomises the Earth trend: an exploration of the earth’s textures, colours and patterns. This home interiors collection is a celebration of flora and fauna: gilded animal statues in bell jars and mixed maxi print glass trays are complemented by striking biophilic foiled wall art and coral-influenced candle holders. Evoking the sacredness of nature, the whirlwind formation of PTMD’s Mazis iron mirror paints ornate flowers in a luxurious copper tone.

Catalogues

Highlighting the best of Dutch design, PTMD works in partnership with award-winning Dutch floral artists to develop its best-selling faux botanical catalogue. In a seasonally evolving collection of more than 500 dried and faux designs, the floral artists use their horticultural expertise to develop a selection that reflects the true form of each plant to ensure maximally convincing pieces - you’d be forgiven for doubting their faux nature! And from clean, utilitarian industrial pieces to cosy, glamorous designs, PTMD’s furniture catalogue presents a diverse collection of aesthetics. Its furniture design remixes minimal Scandi aesthetics and intermingles neutral staple pieces amongst designs with a modern, playful energy. The Jenter iron coffee table collection, for example, introduces fun sophistication into the home space, with its playful cookie cutter form and soothing metallic toned surface. PTMD’s Christmas 2022 presents an alternative take on festive aesthetics with thousands of unconventional seasonal designs, quirky decorations, playful seasonal interiors, and a winter edition of its best-selling faux botanical collection. All designs in this collection are limited edition. Due to high volumes of interest, PTMD is encouraging interested customers to reserve their Christmas stock before lines sell out. The new collection is available for delivery in 10-14 working days and can be reserved and sent over at your convenience. PTMD is always keen to hear from design-led independent businesses. If you’re interested in becoming a stockist or would like to arrange a visit to the showroom, contact The Orangery Collection.

RETAIL INTERVIEW

South Downs Nurseries & Garden Cantre

‘Something

for everyone’

G

avin James Mumford, garden centre manager and buyer of South Downs Nurseries & Garden Centre, reveals why Glee is his go-to show:

What’s your background? I’ve worked in the garden centre industry for over 20 years, the majority of which was spent at Woodcote Green Nurseries. During that time, I worked in multiple sectors and was involved in all aspects of the business. I’ve been at Tates of Sussex Garden Centres for 18 months, and I manage a large team while also being involved with purchasing and buying decisions for the group. Tell us a bit about your garden centre. South Downs Nurseries & Garden Centre is our largest centre. It’s in Hassocks (near Brighton) and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. We have one of the largest undercover plant areas in Sussex as well as a stunning coffee shop and Heritage Centre. Horticulture is paramount and we are lucky enough to have our own nursery on site as well. We have created an ever-expanding home & gift section and have a strong reputation for interesting items and strong visual merchandising. Describe your gift range. It’s the perfect blend of everyday pick-ups, mixed in with more exclusive trend-driven lines.

We are constantly looking to keep our home & gift offer fresh and exciting, while retaining a strong core range. We pride ourselves on showing off the products to the fullest, and that often means our shop floor team using a mix of formal and informal merchandising to both inspire but also remain accessible for customers. We also have our own art gallery, where we keep items from local artists as well as unique one-off home furnishings. The ethos is very much something for everyone - be it a gift or to enhance your own home.

“Glee remains a must for all buyers within the industry” What are your key categories? Houseplant pots and vases, wall art, soaps and fragrance, and interior furniture. Who are your key suppliers? PTMD, Hill Interiors, St. Eval, and All Sorted. How do you find products? Through trade shows, trade press, and visiting other retailers (both small and large scale) - and by asking questions within the industry. Why is Glee important to you? Glee has changed dramatically over the years, but it still remains a must for all buyers within the industry. It’s my go-to show for many reasons, and the fact that most of the major players are consistently there is a testament to that. It’s all about putting a face to an email and discovering new suppliers and future trends. Seeing something in the flesh always gives a better perspective.

What’s proving popular? We’re seeing good success with our interior cushions and throws. And houseplant pots continue to grow, as do vases. There’s a definite increase in customers being happy to part with more money - as long as it’s value for money: statement pieces and functional products that also look good within the home such as high-end diffusers, for example. What lines have you started stocking recently? PTMD homewares and St. Eval candles. Are you looking at expanding into new product categories? We have big plans to expand and hopefully relocate our home & gift section into a purpose-built building to enable us to really showcase our ranges and to invest in room sets which should help and inspire our customers. What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job? Seeing new product groups that you’ve invested time and effort into sourcing, ranging and negotiating come to fruition – and seeing customers pick up and purchase items with confidence. It’s also particularly satisfying to see staff members flourish and exceed in their roles after training and guidance. Once they start trusting their instincts and have bought into our customer focus ethos, our team becomes stronger. And the most challenging? Letting go… I tend to want to try and put myself in the centre of everything when it’s often best to stand back and advise when needed. I’m an extremely committed individual and always strive for perfection, so I find it hard to not involve myself from the bottom to the top.

Focus on... Wax Lyrical

More than just

a candle

Inspired by the beauty and wonder of its home in the Lake District, and with over 40 years’ experience of crafting beautifully designed collections, Wax Lyrical is passionate about fragrance

T

he simple act of lighting a candle creates a calming reassurance - in fact, an instant sense of feeling better. The flame lights up the room, warms the heart and, by blending the right fragrance, helps our wellbeing. Wax Lyrical’s passion for fragrance is blended throughout the company’s new Silver Needle Tea fragrance in its best-selling Fired Earth range. Available in three sizes of candles and reed diffusers, the stylish design decorates any room and a premium, sophisticated fragrance completes the home. The combination of bergamot, rosemary, eucalyptus, jasmine, cedar and amber not only smells divine but will help reduce stress, enhance relaxation and balance the emotions. Also helping to improve emotional wellbeing, Wax Lyrical has created two new must-have home fragrances for feeling calmly confident, which are available in candle tins, glass and pillar candles, as well as tea lights and reed diffusers. Fresh Eucalyptus is an oceanic fragrance to create a relaxing mood and to reduce exhaustion and benefit concentration. Aromatic Sandalwood is rich and sensual, including bergamot, ginger and vanilla to promote calmness, lower stress and improve sleep quality. Of course, fragrance is more than just relaxing - it can also be joyous. Joining forces again with award-winning designer Yvonne Ellen, Wax Lyrical has created four luscious and irresistible fragrances and new imaginative twists, adding character to every room. Ellen Studio London is a quirky and desirable range of four modern fragrances in candles (made with sustainable

24 Gifts Today

coconut wax), long lasting diffusers, giftable letterbox cards, and moisturising hand care in a mono-material (PE) future pump, meaning the whole vessel can be recycled. Fragrance is a personal choice, but Wax Lyrical head of research and development Dr Will Locke says it’s also more than just having a preference. Dr Will explains: “There is a science to scent. We all know the power of fragrance and the impact it can have on our happiness, mood and energy, but fragrance also transports you to a memory, a feeling or a specific moment in time. Scents can remind us so vividly of people and places and create an instant moment of nostalgia.” There’s nothing more nostalgic than an advent calendar, and Wax Lyrical has again this year created several stunning candle advent calendars, including for Wrendale Designs and Yvonne Ellen: 24 days of fragranced beauty, at possibly the most joyous but also stressful time of the year. Dr Will adds: “We are always excited and proud to unveil our latest collections, styles and inspired new products, and there are several Christmas collections to decorate the home or make the perfect presents. New or timeless favourites, all have the same quality, expert science and fragrance blended throughout - and, of course, all are proudly made in the UK, creating moments to wax lyrical about.”

United in a symmetry of life-changing events, and a longstanding friendship with a shared passion for design and textiles, led to the unleashing of the creative minds rewriting the home decoration rule book - and so The Tale of Ballard and Hill was inspired. The founders and imaginations behind this distinctive brand - Susan Ballard Leigh and Natalie Johnson Hill - aim to create theatrical but commercial ranges which ooze an unexpected flamboyance of colour, tacticity and refinement, further enhanced with an exceptional level of excellence and attention to detail in all areas. The inspiration of each range has been an original piece of Susan’s artwork. An established acrylic artist, her distinctive, contemporary handwriting is instantly recognisable. Alongside Natalie’s more commercial textile background, they both excel with a keen eye for detail and colour managing - and an undeniable ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

created to flow organically with continuity in mind, and each sits comfortably beside the other, regardless of colour, scale or structure. Popular ranges include the lovable Quirky Animals, and the simply stunning Oceaniq. Each design is distinctly different with a kaleidoscopic colour palette that you simply cannot ignore. These are designs with the ‘aww’ factor! The Sunflower range is the first to be released under the Flora range. It’s summer personified! Bright, joyful, and ever so slightly unconventional, it’s exactly what you would expect of this brand. All the products within the ranges are

‘The artistic handwriting of the ranges is very unique but also very commercial’ designed in Britain and manufactured in UK factories, which is highly advantageous to both the UK home interiors sector and the export market. The brand has already experienced some export success in a bespoke capacity and would relish the chance to develop this area further both at home and abroad.

Product ranges currently feature fine bone china mugs, quality melamine tableware, and premium cotton tea towels. Using outstanding UK suppliers, lead-times are impressively short, averaging four to six weeks from artwork completion to product delivery. The company is flexible, not only for reactive repeat ordering but also for new design development and trials of both Ballard and Hill branded ranges and bespoke commissions. Collaborative projects with independents, offering exclusivity, is a direction which has become increasingly key - and is a direction that it is very keen to expand. Highly anticipated new developments are soon to be announced, and you can be sure they won’t disappoint. Design originality, highest quality and a wow factor are guaranteed! Susan and Natalie are delighted to be exhibiting at Home & Gift on Stand DP5-B12 and look forward to meeting you. The friends pride themselves on creating products and unique designs full of charm and creativity, alongside an all-important touch of humour. Exquisitely detailed, exceptional quality and an unparalleled individuality… for people and places with bold imaginations!

‘Business is buoyant’ A

Manor House’s 2022 collection encompasses 28 gorgeous fragrances to choose from - which is its largest offering to date - and the company has already begun creating new fragrances for 2023

fter a superb return to Spring Fair at NEC Birmingham, back in February, Manor House welcomed many new stockists to start the new year on a high - and business has continued to stay buoyant, with even more stockists coming on board. Christmas is fast approaching - production started on June 1 - and several clients have already placed their orders. The company says: ‘It’s already looking like Christmas 2022 will be our busiest to date.’ It adds: ‘We are about to launch with a major charity fundraiser, which will show our product to more end users, which will be great!‘ Manor House’s 2022 collection encompasses 28 gorgeous fragrances to choose from, which is its largest offering to date, and the supplier has already begun creating new fragrances for 2023.

The firm says the fact that the products are handmade in England is what so many stockists want. Its pot pourris are all designed in-house using the finest botanicals available to purchase, fragranced using high-end oils, and then finished with individual flowers, petals, and seed pods, before every box and bag is tied by hand ready to display. Meanwhile, its fragrance oils are great for refreshing pot pourri or for traditional and even electric oil burners, and these remain one of the company’s top selling products. All Manor House’s Botanical Candles are produced using the highest quality waxes and fragrances - to match with the pot pourris - and have hand-placed flowers and seed pods added before hand-wrapping and tying. Plus, its glass candles are simple and stylish, and offered in matching gift boxes - again, ready to display. Reed Diffusers, Diffuser Refills and Room Sprays are hand-poured with a high percentage of fragrance, before being boxed and, once again, tied by hand to complete the collection. Many also include Manor House’s newly relaunched luxury hand wash and moisturisers, to add a practical and useful addition. All the lotions are created bespoke for the company. They are not tested on animals and are safe for the environment and not harmful in any way. In addition, Drawer Liners are hand-printed and infused with fragrances, along with triple fabric bags and cushion stacks - all for use

in clothes drawers and wardrobes to gently fragrance. The Facebook page Manor House Home Fragrance Ltd, the Twitter account ManorHouseHome1 and the Instagram account Manorhousehomefragrance, which links the business with retailers and final end customers and clients, are gaining many followers and numerous positive comments. Private Label Home Fragrance is increasing dramatically too, and the company is working with more and more leading retailers to produce private label collections incorporating clients’ thoughts and ideas on fragrances and branding to offer bespoke and unique one-off collections. Manor House also now offers a standard selection of on the shelf gift boxes in various colourways to suit the slightly smaller retailers.

‘A truly

special event’ As we look forward to Home & Gift, show manager David Westbrook tells us what’s in the pipeline for the four-day buyers’ festival, which kicks off in Harrogate on July 17 What makes Home & Gift different from other trade exhibitions in the buying calendar? Home & Gift is a truly special event. In all my years of organising, visiting and exhibiting within the industry, I’ve never come across anything quite like it. Combined with the vast array of brands on offer, the unique, relaxed social atmosphere that we foster allows for both easy networking and (importantly!) successful buying. It’s just completely different to all the other events out there, making it a favourite for both exhibitors and retailers. How will you make this the best Home & Gift yet? The show is over 50% larger than it was in 2021, and importantly over 25% of our exhibitors are brand new this summer too, supplementing all the returning suppliers that our retailers know and love. So there really is something for everyone to discover this July. In addition, for the first time ever, we’re giving exhibitors and buyers the chance to start connecting before they arrive in Harrogate on our networking platform Browse & Meet, where buyers are able to explore products and pre-book appointments with exhibitors at the show. This is an amazing opportunity to start the networking and sales process early, so that both sides can make the most of their time at Home & Gift. If that wasn’t enough, as a result of the overwhelming feedback we received in 2021, this year we’re also delighted to be able to expand our home interiors offering by launching the Furniture Collection in Harrogate. This exclusive assembly of furniture and homeware brands will be showcasing beautifully crafted furniture pieces alongside stylish homewares. With Home & Gift taking place in the heart of the British summer, our social events are always popular. And this year won’t disappoint, as we’re bringing back all the fun elements that we’re known for. We have regular Happy Hours planned throughout the festival for our exhibitors and buyers, along with the Sunday Sundowner drinks and much more besides.

time, including Aery, Little Concepts, Albetta, House of Disaster, Do Something David, The Northern Line, Klean Kanteen, Opinel, QUDO, Butterfly Fashion, Ohelo, Okiki Skincare, Heart and Soul Studio, Kind Bag, and Jekyll and Hide. Plus, we are welcoming back a whole host of top exhibitors that were unable to join us in recent years such as Enesco, Container Group Buying, Richard Lang & Son, Orange Tree Toys, Depesche, Belly Button Designs, Tilley & Grace, Kikkerland, Charles Farris, Santoro, Wrendale Designs and Oli Olsen. Alongside all these brands, buyers won’t want to miss our new Furniture Collection, where they can meet top furniture brands and source products to build their home interiors offering. We’ll be running a virtual Shop Talk seminar stream in the lead-up to the show as well, giving everyone the chance to gain important industry insights and knowledge from top experts in the field.

“A huge part of Home & Gift’s charm is its unique combination of social and business atmosphere, which is why it’s the show our buyers and exhibitors actually want to attend, rather than just have to”

Is there anything new this year that visitors should look out for? Well over 100 new suppliers will be showcasing their brands in Harrogate for the first

30 Gifts Today

Will there be any changes to the layout of the show? This year we’ve introduced a new Design Point marquee as we expand again, and have blended our products across our Design Points to help buyers shop multiple sectors with ease. Plus, the Furniture Collection will be taking over Hall Q and the Kings Suite in the Convention Centre. So there’s lots to see! How many exhibitors and visitors are you expecting? Following an incredibly successful 2021 edition, this year there will be over 450 brands to discover across our Halls and Design Points, and with our visitor pre-registration looking strong, we can expect a return to something approaching pre-Covid levels of footfall again. What names - both returning and new - can you confirm will be exhibiting? In addition to all the new brands we have with us for 2022, visitors can still expect to see all their old favourites including Gallery Direct, Joe Davies, Captivate Brands, Zelly, Inside Out Toys, By Molly&Izzie, The Art File, Forever England, Quail, Bomb Cosmetics, Steiff, LIGA, Heathcote & Ivory, CHALK, Lisa Angel, Talking Tables, Lagoon Group, Miss Shorthair, and DCUK, plus many, many more!

FairFocus Home & Gift

“It’s always great to see the industry unite in beautiful, sunny Harrogate” What product sectors can visitors expect to find? In addition to the new Furniture Collection, the Harrogate Convention Centre will play host to Jewellery & Fashion, Home & Interiors and Gift. Across our four Design Point marquees, retailers can explore Design-led Gift and the Food Emporium. Sustainability is a key focus for a number of trade exhibitions in different industries - is this the case for Home & Gift? At Home & Gift we’ve always championed sustainable brands and this year is no exception. One of our many suppliers working towards reducing its brand’s environmental impact is One Hundred Stars, which prides itself on manufacturing products in a sustainable and ethical way, using AZO free dyes for the bold prints featured on its beautiful collection of kimonos, loungewear and fashion accessories. Along with utilising recyclable packaging for online orders, it also repurposes fabric offcuts into headbands to reduce wastage, too! Okiki Skincare is another example of our brands following a sustainable and ethical manufacturing method - in this case, for organic skincare products. Its soap bars have a smaller carbon footprint than liquid soap, making them a favourite with consumers, and the brand utilises organic ingredients rather than palm oil. Additionally, it doesn’t test its products on animals and uses recyclable packaging, which is a big plus for retailers. For our audience, we know sustainability is increasingly important, so we want to encourage more brands to follow the lead of suppliers such as these and play their part in this sea change. Home & Gift is known and loved for being a great place to meet friends and network. What are your plans for social events? Buyers and exhibitors will be able to enjoy Happy Hours daily from 3pm, as well as the Sundowner party from 6pm on the Sunday. We will also soon be releasing our full calendar of events, with an increase in the number of buyer networking opportunities, so watch this space! The sociable atmosphere of Home & Gift is what makes it our buyers’ favourite trade show, with the relaxed summer setting ensuring networking remains easy and unpressured, allowing buyers and exhibitors alike to enjoy the sunshine and the bubbles! Although the government has removed remaining domestic Covid restrictions in England, do you have any plans in place for visitors and exhibitors to still follow basic safety measures? Last year Home & Gift took place as a government pilot event with no restrictions, and had no Covid outbreak reported, so we’re confident we’ll be able to run another successful show for 2022. We respect peoples’ choices to wear masks and use hand sanitiser if they wish, and the Harrogate Convention Centre will have these both available for everyone at the event.

Finally, what’s your fondest memory of Home & Gift? Personally, in one guise or another, I’ve been at Home & Gift almost every year since 2006, and the show just keeps getting better and better! Having such a successful edition last year was a definite highlight for me, but it’s always great to see the industry unite like this in beautiful, sunny Harrogate. A huge part of Home & Gift’s charm is its unique combination of social and business atmosphere, which is why it’s the show our buyers and exhibitors actually want to attend, rather than just have to.

Richard Lang & Son

Richard Lang & Son designs all its ranges in-house from its Derbyshire HQ and has just celebrated its best year since it was established in 1949. Director of Buying and Design Jane Bourne talks to Gifts Today about Home & Gift

‘The perfect environment’

Why is Home & Gift so important for your business? We have a fantastic team looking after our customers and visiting them regularly to service their needs, and obviously we can take orders online or directly with our customer services team. But feedback from our customers is that there’s nothing quite like actually seeing our products and examining the quality. No matter how well a catalogue is printed, it can’t replace that physical experience of being able to touch and feel our products. That said, we are quite selective which trade shows we attend, and have always found Harrogate the perfect environment to catch up with our old customers and build relationships with new ones. We’re all excited for the show and are just so delighted that we can meet again face-to-face.

What products are you finding particularly popular? Our plaques have always been a staple Langs product and continue to be at the top of our bestseller list. Whether the message is cheeky, witty, homely or loving, our customers can’t seem to get enough of them! And as they are small, relatively low cost items which come in their own compact

stand, they can be displayed easily at the till, meaning customers often pick them up as little ‘extra’ treats for themselves or as gifts for loved ones. We’re also thrilled with the way our new range of greeting cards has been received. Card sales have grown in the industry over the last couple of years, and we offer an

“We’re all excited for the show and are just so delighted that we can meet again face-toface” extensive collection covering birthdays, occasions, friendship, thank you, humorous and seasonal cards, designed and printed in the UK on a high quality, textured card with a matt finish. Our card spinners make merchandising easy and come free when purchasing an initial batch of 48 cards. Our customers are already reporting huge successes with this line.

What can we expect to see on your stand? This is the show where customers tend to be focusing on buying for Autumn, Halloween and Christmas. Our stand will be bursting with inspirational displays, helping you to see these collections in all their glory! As ever, our fabulous design team has come up with some gorgeous original imagery for our new Autumn range which we’re delighted to be launching at Harrogate, 34 Gifts Today

including a very handsome hare and a hedgehog on a toadstool. These can be found on a range of products, including cushions, mugs, jugs and prints. We all know Christmas is the most important season of the year for gift retailers and our range this year has not disappointed after launching in early January. You have loved all our collections, and these will all be there for you to get into that festive feeling! Our Vintage Santa embossed mugs make a perfect accessory, and there are lots more pieces to see in this range. Our little houses on the hill collection has again been very popular for the home décor feeling; these snowy houses will look gorgeous in any home.

RETAIL INTERVIEW

Bill & Bert’s

Bill & Bert’s

gets bigger Home & Gift enthusiast Bill Nettelfield, owner of Bill & Bert’s in Colchester, talks about his passion for trade shows – and his latest business project What’s your background? I’ve always been in retail. Previously I had a furniture store, and a gift shop in Cheltenham. I helped set up the London Aquarium gift store, and then, with the original owners, set up a chain of pop-up stores: Calendar Club. I left Calendar Club in 2017.

‘We are enormous fans of trade shows and treat them very seriously. I firmly believe that suppliers need to exhibit, and retailers need to attend. If you want to find something interesting and new, you’ve got to walk the aisles’ 40 Gifts Today

Why did you decide to open a gift shop? I’m too young to retire and I’ve always loved retail. So, when the opportunity came along to take a site in Colchester town centre left vacant by boutique store Karen Millen, I thought, ‘with a shop of this size [just under 2,500sq ft] we could do something differently - and on a larger scale - than some gift shops’. I opened Bill & Bert’s in August 2019 with my wife’s daughter Sarah Charlton. [Bill’s beloved schnauzer dog Bertie, who sadly isn’t with us any more, inspired the name of the store.] Fortunately, Bill & Bert’s became an instant hit, and this year the opportunity came along to extend into the old Trespass [outdoor specialist] unit next door by knocking a huge walkthrough. We almost doubled in size to approximately 4,500sq ft on April 8. How would you describe your gift range? Quality gifts at sensible prices for grandchildren through to grandparents. What are your key categories? We sell an enormous range that varies from ladies’ clothes and bags to soft toys, games, lighting, candles, hardware, pottery, glassware

and socks. The range is endless and is one of the reasons we have been successful, because customers can buy something for themselves as well as everyone in the family. Who are your key suppliers? I deal with 100-plus suppliers, but we do have some stand-out large accounts such as Jellycat, Wrendale, DCUK, Swole Panda, Roka of London, The Bottled Baking Co., Cartwright & Butler, Spice Kitchen, Ashleigh & Burwood, Portmeirion, Kate of Kensington, Little Weaver Arts, Rosie Made A Thing, and Lucilla Lavender. How do you find products? We are enormous fans of trade shows and treat them very seriously. I firmly believe that suppliers need to exhibit, and retailers need to attend. If you want to find something interesting and new, you’ve got to walk the aisles. This year we’ve been to Spring Fair

and Top Drawer, and we will be going to Home & Gift in July, and Autumn Fair and Top Drawer in September. Most reps/agent for our area are great and call to make an appointment. As I’m an old dinosaur, seeing them - and the shows - is so much better for me than ordering online. What’s your selection criteria? Quality, price, and does it fit in with the look of the shop? If products are made and packaged in an environmentally-friendly way, then even better. What’s proving popular? Jellycat is our number one (we have one of the largest displays of Jellycats in the country). But we have other stand-out ranges as well: Roka of London bags, Freckleface wax melts, Chilly’s water bottles, DCUK ducks, Swole Panda socks and belts, Wrendale, The Bottled Baking Co., and anything to do with food gifting. What lines have you started stocking recently? With the extra space we had to find a lot of new lines, as well as expand some of our best-selling ranges. New since April are Miffy soft toys and House of Marbles. We also have a range of lights from Denmark, and products from several smaller suppliers who we found at Top Drawer. Really, the list goes on and on! How is trading for you? Trade for me as an independent is exceeding all goals, and this has proved even more so since we came out of lockdown in April 2021. There has been a very noticeable shift in shopping patterns to ‘shop local’ - and at independent shops. You never

Fresh gifts

with a twist

A trio of product developments includes an updated version of a classic gift collectable, a vast range extension, and a fine art gaming challenge

R

etro yet desirable and collectable, paperweights are an unusual stationery item these days, but Museums & Galleries (M&G) has increased its collection. The company says: ‘They make handsome gifts. The clear crystal domes enhance the beauty of the artwork stunningly, really making it shine, whether it be gemstones from the Natural History Museum, Matthew Williamson’s glittering starbursts or peacock

feathers, glorious Asian textiles or intricate William Morris designs from the V&A, or Hokusai’s great wave from the British Museum’. There are now 16 weights to choose from. Meanwhile, M&G’s organic cotton tote bags and large pouch collection has almost doubled in size, offering a very enhanced choice. Refreshing the range are colourful, summery totes from designers Sarah Campbell, Catherine Rowe, and Wild Press by Helen Ahpornsiri. Sarah Campbell’s Côte d’Azur design is especially sunny and holiday-ready. Wild Press’s delicate and intricate pressed flower collage representing a meadow rabbit translates gorgeously to cotton textile, and Catherine Rowe’s stunning Bee Pattern is bold and striking. Finally, a new range of 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles were front and centre on M&G’s Spring Fair stand, and the warmly positive reaction from visitors delighted the company. Pre-orders since the start of the year have been brisk, and now stock is flying out of M&G’s Corby warehouse. Particularly admired were the vibrant print quality, the retail-friendly size, and the shape of the boxes and their design as sturdy reusable components with printed liners. Envisioned as entertaining puzzles and works of art in one, M&G boasts a few puzzle enthusiasts in its design team who selected and road tested the chosen designs. A star Arts & Crafts design from the V&A - Charles Voysey’s Birds of Many Climes - made an excellent puzzle choice, as did Vincent Van Gogh’s Farms Near Auvers from the Tate, and Hokusai’s Great Wave from the British Museum. One of designer Matthew Williamson’s stunning mural wallpapers - a vibrant jungle scene painted in homage to Henri Rousseau makes a fantastic challenge and is one of the range’s early best sellers.

The jigsaw puzzle was invented in 1766 by John Spilsbury, a British cartographer and engraver, as an educational toy. Fittingly, one of M&G’s launch puzzles is a 17th century Four Hemisphere World map from the British Library collections. Accompanying the gift products, and in many cases co-ordinating with them, M&G’s gift packaging collection now encompasses dozens of colourful wraps, in sheet and roll formats, single sided, double sided, and foiled. Alongside these are gift bags (each design comes in two sizes) and gift tissue, offering a truly splendid way of wrapping the perfect gift.

FairFocus The Exclusively Show

‘A perfect showcase f Will Jones, chair of The Exclusively Show and chief operating officer of the show’s owner BHETA (British Home Enhancement Trade Association), shares a preview of what to expect at this year’s event What makes The Exclusively Show different to other trade exhibitions in the buying calendar? It’s small enough to be super-friendly and large enough to include everything any buyer or opinion former might need in terms of product, trends, inspiration and information to make the coming seasons successful and profitable. Maybe ‘small enough; large enough’ is a bit of a cliché, but Exclusively genuinely covers all the bases, offers a level playing field to suppliers small or large, and combines product with trends and advice. And it does so in a positive atmosphere of friendship and mutual benefit. It’s a perfect showcase for gift ideas and a great place for multiple buyers, garden centre buyers and specialist independents alike to see the very latest in products, trends and merchandising. Plus, the strict entry criteria means only bona fide trade customers visit the show and they are very well taken care of, with free refreshments, three course lunches and an evening drinks reception. The Show celebrates its 20th anniversary this year - how has it evolved over the decades? It has grown from just a handful of suppliers in 2002 to a fantastic line-up of more than 130 exhibitors, displaying over 200 brands, including 30 new exhibitors. The main development has been the growth of the small electricals sector. Over time we have refined the show and learned what works best for visitors and exhibitors, and we believe the format is in a very strong place. How will you make this the best Exclusively Show yet? We know that existing features such as the trend talks, tours and displays by forecasting agency Scarlet Opus, and the Brand Showcase - which provides media with a curated insight into the best new products at the show - are hugely popular. The latter (which draws journalists, bloggers and influencers) will be even bigger this year, due to demand. Last year we started the Launch Pad, which is a dedicated area for smaller brands and start-ups, and we will repeat this feature again based on the success of 2021. One new feature will be the acclaimed drinks expert Olly Smith hosting wine tasting events sponsored by glassmaker Stolzle Lausitz, part of exhibitor E P Brands’ portfolio, and the presence of TV chef Jeremy Pang working with exhibitors to explore the potential of food-led video as a means of promoting gifts, small electricals and housewares to consumers. This year we will have travel cost incentives for all, and limited free hotel rooms are available on a first-come-first-served basis for buyers travelling over 50 miles to attend. We are also offering a discount voucher for all independents who place orders at the show. 48 Gifts Today

FairFocus The Exclusively Show

e for gift ideas’ What product sectors can visitors expect to find? Housewares including tableware, kitchenware and bakeware, glassware, barware, small domestic electricals, and giftware. How many exhibitors and visitors are you expecting? We are currently 96% sold with more than 130 exhibitors signed up. Based on previous years, we expect to be completely sold out and every space taken. Last year was a very strong show for visitors despite Covid, the ban on international visitors, and an enforced move to the August holiday season. With the country opening up, we expect an increase on 2021. What names - both new and returning - will be exhibiting? New names include AnySharp, Aqua, Barista & Co, Cerve, Connect Distribution, Ice Cool Design, Ion8, Laica, Lloytron, Optima, Polder Products, Danwale, HomeArama, Strix, and Trebonn. Returning names include Amefa, BeeBee and Leaf, Charles Bentley & Son, City Look Imports, EZY Storage, Jean Dubost, Masterpan, Mepal, SIGG Switzerland, SodaStream, Tatay, Villeroy & Boch, Vitality House, and Westinghouse Homeware. Sustainability is a key focus for a number of trade exhibitions in different industries - is this the case for The Exclusively Show? This is now so inherent, both in the trends and the products that suppliers will present. Sustainability as an issue has gone beyond the point where it is a ‘special feature’ - and this applies to product, packaging and presentation/merchandising. Will there be any changes to the layout of the show this year? The show will follow the 2021 layout that was very well received by exhibitors and visitors alike. Exclusively is known and loved for being a social show and a great place to meet friends and network. What are your plans for this year? The traditional drinks reception will take place on the evening of day one (Tuesday June 14). There are also plans for an international buyers’ evening on the day prior to the opening of the show (Monday June 13). Although the government has removed remaining domestic Covid restrictions in England, do you have any plans in place for visitors and exhibitors to still follow basic safety measures? The show team and the Business Design Centre venue regard the health and safety of all visitors and exhibitors as of paramount importance. Please check the website for the latest safety guidelines. Safe, controlled and all-secure!

What is your earliest memory of The Exclusively Show? Seema Grantham, sector manager – housewares & small electricals of show owner BHETA (British Home Enhancement Trade Association) has been to every edition of the show. She recalls: “I have no qualms in saying that I love the show and have done so for 20 years - as an exhibitor with three companies, and now as part of the organising team. I remember so many companies, industry colleagues, and buyers just enjoying the Business Design Centre and making a ‘work’ event so pleasurable. “My strongest memories are of coming away from the show completely exhausted, physically and mentally, as the two days are very intense and productive. I was always so impressed by the number of brands and products that are present and, on the other side, by how many retailers walk the show. The year that Jamie Oliver attended the show was a real highlight and he certainly caused a great stir! “I’ve always enjoyed the social aspect of the show too. It’s a very friendly industry and I love the opportunity to see industry friends and contacts in such a great venue. I’m really looking forward to the drinks reception this year.”

OPINION

Reflections on a busy quarter The Giftware Association chief executive Sarah Ward has visited n January, we thought we would have another major disruption to the muchneeded return to the full trade show calendar.Yet despite Omicron’s best efforts, by the end of the first quarter, I have visited 15 (yes, 15!) trade shows: 13 in the UK, one in Milan and one in Las Vegas. I’m exhausted but buoyed by the experience of having so many meaningful conversations with Giftware Association (GA) members on my tour of our industry’s trade show representation. There has been so much

eagerness from buyers and manufacturers to return to UK trade shows, and I’m happy to report that despite all the challenges besetting our industry from all directions, there is more of a vibrant ecosystem than ever before. New supply chains are being sought, interesting collaborations are being negotiated, and businesses are continuing to grow as a result. We are better placed than ever as an association to advise our members on the very best trade shows to visit in the coming year. We can provide advice that is tailored to individual members, based on a clear understanding of what they are seeking to achieve, and what different trade shows can offer to enable them to achieve these goals. This is not a sweetened-up vision of the here and now, however. Things are tough - more so than at any point in the last five years. This is why the GA’s place at the top tables in the Bank of England, The Genesis Initiative and government is so important. In March, I was one of seven trade leaders invited to join the Bank of England to discuss the economy. Asked to speak first, I was able to get transparency on what the immediate future holds, and demand greater support for our industry. It cannot be underestimated how important 52 Gifts Today

it is that the GA is able to have a direct line to the policy makers who have such an impact on our industry, and it’s an honour to be your voice. Those of you who are GA members will have received an email from our marketing manager Chris Workman asking for your feedback - your issues, questions, and observations for me to take to the Bank of England. If you usually file those emails, I urge you not to. Be assured that I take our members’ feedback direct to those at the top, and only by us all working together as one community, can we demand real change and be sure our voices are heard. This is just one of many reasons why being part of your industry’s trade body is so vital. The GA exists to represent, serve, educate, support and connect our members. I must pause my reflections at this point, as we are into April and so much is about to happen this quarter. We have a new website launching, the prestigious Gift of the Year Awards and yes, you’ve guessed it, more trade shows to visit!

“We had an amazing time creating this department and bringing it to life” the past few years of being at home every day, the demand for homeware has increased.” BGC PR & communications co-ordinator Lucy Hewitt said the department’s launch was “extremely successful, with a private influencer event, and was positively received on social media. They felt the prices were competitive, the products looked inspiring, and they enjoyed the shopping experience. Since opening, the department overall has been received really well by customers. We’ve had great feedback from them in person and on social media. Sales have been strong since the launch and continue to thrive each week. It’s clear the top performers so far are foliage/florals, soft furnishings and home accessories - they are our main pick-up lines in the department.” Other product categories carried are cushions, blankets, throws, rugs, baskets and ‘Kitchen’ such

Gifts go from strength to strength

While Home is a new department for British Garden Centres (BGC), the Gift department has always featured highly within the company and continues to go from strength to strength. Described by BGC PR & communications co-ordinator Lucy Hewitt as ‘an integral part of our business and strategy,’ core categories are home fragrance, toiletries, greeting cards, toys, homeware, artificial flowers, books and collections, sourced from 80-plus suppliers. Key names include Jellycat, Wrendale and Joma Jewellery. When it comes to selection criteria, quality, value and points of difference are the three key areas. Lucy said: “The buying team attend many trade shows and industry shopping events, as well as seeing what’s happening on the high street and out-of-town areas. They all contribute towards how to buy products and stock our centres.”

t’s been a busy few months for British Garden Centres (BGC). In February Woodborough Green Garden Centre in Nottingham (previously known as Timmermans Garden Centre), joined the retail group, followed by Lytham St Annes Garden Centre in Lancashire (previously known as Trebaron Garden Centre) in March. And on April 16, Hatton Garden Centre in Warwick officially became part of the BGC family, bringing the total number of branches to 61. Exactly a week earlier, the retailer’s flagship - Brigg Garden Centre in Lincolnshire - launched a brandnew homeware department. At 267,600sq ft, Brigg is the biggest centre in the chain and one of the largest garden centres in the UK. It houses everything needed for gardens and homes, from plants to outdoor living and gifts. The new department, called Home at British Garden Centres, is billed as ‘a true destination for everything you could ever want to turn your house into your home’. Group gift buyer Lizzie Lloyd and assistant group buyer Emma Davis said: “We had an amazing time creating this department and bringing it to life in Brigg with the visual merchandising team. Homeware allows you to shape your home and create a unique personal style. This new department houses everything from kitchen essentials to furniture. “We really believe our customers will love this new department with its new lines of homeware. The department presents four key themes Botanical, Pure, Coastal and Glam - full of soft blankets, pillows, stunning bedding, and furniture to fill every room in your home. Our homes are one of the main aspects of our lives and following

Emma Davis and Lizzie Lloyd as Emma Bridgewater tinware, Dexam textiles, Mason Cash, Typhoon, Kilner, Fusion utensils, London Pottery, and Beau & Elliot. There are room sets which feature lighting, home accessories, furniture, art, and foliage/florals. So, will the concept be rolled out to other garden centres in the group? “We are currently waiting to see how the department performs at Brigg before any further decisions are made,” said Lucy. “This is a new area for the group, and we hope our customers love it as much as we do.”

“With the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee fast approaching, we are getting very excited”

Bryony Taylor-Edwards

Head of Marketing and Home, Gift and Toy Buyer Yarnton Home & Garden, Yarnton, Oxfordshire

With the sun shining, we are expecting Father’s Day to be all about outdoor cooking and living. We have some fantastic Weber Smokey Joes BBQs and Tubby Tom’s BBQs rubs in stock and ready. On the smaller gift side, we have some fantastic Swole Panda recycled woven belts [each made from seven plastic bottles]. We love their bright colours. With the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee fast approaching, we are getting very excited. The word on the street says that the plan for a lot of our surrounding villages is a good old-fashioned street party - so we have made sure we are fully stocked with Union Jack bunting from Powell Crafts and everything required for a brilliant Jubilee tea party from Talking Tables. Pimm’s Jam anyone?

Claire Leigh Director, Two Ducks Woking , Surrey

For Father’s Day, we think our new men’s bracelets from Pig & Hen [a brand producing handmade bracelets in Amsterdam] will do well. It’s a new brand for us with a variety of price points and styles to suit all. Our Orbitkey gifts and Secrid wallets continue to do well all year round but particularly for Father’s Day. And we tend to bring in deli food such as chutneys, pickles and marmalades, as these are always popular for this occasion. For the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we have just brought in a beautiful commemorative line from British brand Victoria Eggs, which includes tea towels, mugs, coasters, tins of biscuits and tea. We know lots of people may do the more traditional bunting, so we’ve avoided buying this in.

The good news is that another lockdown seems unlikely, but the bad news is the amount of people going out as little as possible to try and avoid catching Covid, and people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. I think the next 12-24 months could be the most difficult ever for many businesses, especially non-essential retailers. We aren’t stocking anything new for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee but we are hoping that people will still treat dad to a gift this year. We have a large selection of men’s gifts covering lots of interests including sport, gardening, and drinking. Our main concern this year is if we will sell as many of the high-end gifts, due to the economic situation.

We don’t stock for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee but for Father’s Day we will do well with our Best Daddy in Derry range. We have our own sayings in Derry, so we got DTP Southfield to do a range of bespoke mugs, tea towels, aprons and mugs for us. The sayings include: ‘What’s The Craic?’ (meaning ‘what’s happening?’), ‘I’m All Lured For Ye’ (meaning ‘I’m delighted for you’), and ‘Do You Think I Came Up The Foyle In A Bubble?’ (meaning ‘do you think I’m stupid?’ - the Foyle being a river in Derry).

Father’s Day is never a big uptake for us, but the gifts we will have include men’s leather weekend bags from Rowalan, Captain Fawcett men’s grooming products, Star Wars 4D puzzles from University Games, Complete E Murder Mystery in Paris from Lagoon Games, Peaky Blinders gift sets from GB eye, Widdop & Bingham Military Heritage Co., and our best seller: socks! We are doing a feature window to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The window will be in a red, white and blue street party theme with bunting. Denby’s Made in England product will be the main focus. And our Bistro & Coffee Shop will serve a special Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea.

The last couple of years have been tough for everyone and I think it’s really important to remember that. Sometimes it’s hard when you work alone, at home, to remember that there’s an entire world starting to wake up again and that many people are in the same boat. Things were really picking up at the tail end of last year, but I feel the increases in fuel costs - both at home and on the road - have made people a little more cautious about their personal spend. I expect our range of Mr. Perfect soaps and body wash from The Somerset Toiletry Co. will work well for Father’s Day, along with The Hardware Store range of novelty DIY products from CGB Giftware. We have seven products available from the range, including a 6-In-1 Multi Tool, Screwdriver Bottle Opener and LED Looped Torch Tool. Our cork travel boards from Xystos are perfect gifts for dads and we offer both the small travel sizes as well as the large option. We are not listing anything specifically for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

We are selling lots of lamps and shades at the moment. People are bringing their bases into us to find a new look for their homes. Vintage port and whisky glasses are always great for Father’s Day. For the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we’re stocking Bridgewater commemorative mugs, but I would say our vintage style Union Jack bunting will be our best seller in June.

We are a very seasonal business and have recently noticed a rise in footfall as visitors start to arrive again to the seaside town of Eastbourne. We have just received a range of Platinum Jubilee-inspired merchandise, which is already selling out. The products include souvenir fridge magnets, keyrings, boxed mugs, teddy bears, tea towels, tote bags and flags and bunting - all from Elgate Products. Plus, souvenir coins, pin badges and spoons from Tradition Giftware. We always stock a range of ‘dad’ related gifts. Examples are Best Dad mugs, keyrings. bottle openers, coasters, pens, bamboo socks, and wallets - sourced mainly from History & Heraldry.
