Edito SuperCharged 4 by Martin Gillet

Why have we started building the Community, what is in it for you, for us?

This Edition’s Agenda.

The Community is evolving constantly, growing and adding new peers and members. Thanks to its recurrent monthly activities and side events, the Club is leading networking events along with fun activities so that we can all share experiences, tips and tricks and raise the EV awareness among us but demoing our willingness to change towards a more sustainable lifestyle, reaching out for the ‘Blue Economy’ principles.

Thank You! SuperCharged continues its journey with a fourth edition.

This fourth edition is yet another awesome achievement with a great line up of subjects. Starting in this edition, We will discuss with Svein Veitdal, Director Klima 2020, former UN Director about the Energy and Climate challenges we are facing today; debrief the electrifying Project STORM that we had the chance to meet on their final leg back to the Netherlands at the Belgian Nivelles SuperCharger; meet Damien Ernst, our belgian Energy Expert from the University of Liège who will debrief us on his COP22 visit in Marokko. We have also taken the time to talk with early adopter Paul Bossens, proud owner of the first Roadster and soon a Model X owner, Paul has seen quite a few electric journeys!

Conclusion

Once again, thank you all for your outstanding support, from the warm welcome of Supercharged past editions. From direct messages to Reposts and Retweet, not to mention ideas for articles and kind words on the Magazine format, the cheerful discussions while charging eg at the SuperChargers; we are still overwhelmed by your adoption and enthusiasm. Foreword by Martin Gillet

BRUSSELS EPRIX FORMULA E:

“A SAD MISSED OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE BRUSSELS/ BELGIUM SHINE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD” Back in 2015, we made proactively the acquaintance of Stephan Uhoda, who was in the process of organising the Belgian Formula E Prix in Brussels. His vision and passion didn’t take long to convince us to support and join this awesome initiative. We support Stephan and his professional team in the organisation of the first Belgian ePrix. We had a blast at the French ePrix in Paris, where we were onsite able to see the amazing time that all families and individuals had. What a great additional asset for a european capital! Formula E has little to do with the noisy Formula 1, it provides more than a window onto the World, it’s open window for opportunities such as engaging the main challenges we are facing like a sustainable future including mobility. It goes without saying that Formula E events are a ‘the place to be’ to network and make Business. It’s the modern times of the Playing Golf attitude. We as a Club, wanted to embrace and join this initiative in order to have a sustainable move with our Members, have a Parade, demo that electric vehicles are not only the future but also a sustainable approach in the ‘Blue Economy’ that we trust in. We wanted to have a fun family event like why not the fun soap box racers and the Belgian comics balloon show. Belgium and Brussels has so much to offer. We knew it would be challenging journey, long and painful but we are entrepreneurs and have faith in the positive outcome of the Project. Sadly despites many demanding subjects and the proactive mindset of the Organisation to find solutions, Brussels ePrix 2017 didn’t resist to the Belgian surrealism and mainly the lack of political support, lacking a true vision that would have enabled a great Family event in the Heart of Europe. How many cities are begging to host such major events with all the positive side echoes. It’s not like Brussels didn’t need such good time after the ‘2016 events’. We were flummoxed to have the rumor confirmed that despites all the flexibility shown, the open mindness and the creativity to make this event planned for July 2017 has failed to see a positive outcome. It might be an ‘easy shortcut’ but truth is that besides biking and football events, it seems that this Project does not have the full attention and commitment of all parties, most of them on individuals grounds in their respective political party. Hence the mourning, we are very sad that our great Country and the Heart of Europe has missed such a cheerful opportunity to make Brussels and Belgium shine throughout the World, showing true Leadership perhaps joined with the COP follow up with green mobility and a sustainable future. We do feel let down by our elected officials. The Saga is not over yet as we are all awaiting 2018 .. Stay tune.

Thank you to all Members and individuals that have supported us up to now, kudos for the kind words and the cheerful comments. Disclaimer: We are not affiliated nor talking on behalf of the Formula E nor the Belgian Organisation CECOFORMA organizing the Brussels ePrix.

CLUB EVENTS Club is always looking for great venues and ideas to organize cheerful events and memories. Feel free submit ideas and locations, Community at work, the more ideas, the more creative, the merrier. On December 29th, 2016, we had an epic moment when attending the Rogue One movie, latest edition to the saga. Many Owners responded to the Club invitation and attended this awesome journey. December 6th, 2016: On St Nicholas’s day, all the braves Kids striking fun evening indoors! We had yet another cheerful Bowling game and grabbed a bite, catching up with our Peers. I was widely whispered that true Champions were revealed that night on the different lanes ... Club is working on the next events to take place in Early 2017. Club is also working on ‘secret plans’ to meet the different demands from the club members. Stay tune, if not already done, subscribe to our newsletter to get the latests news and events. PIAGGIO UNVEILS VESPA ELETTRICA The Piaggio Group plans to begin production of the Vespa Elettrica, an electric version of its iconic scooter, later this year. The design concept for the new vehicle was recently unveiled in Milan, during the EICMA motorcycle trade show. “The Vespa Elettrica will, first and foremost, be a true Vespa, bringing the very latest in electric technology to a vehicle that will retain all the features that have been vital to its success” said a statement from the Group. “The style, agility, ease of use, and riding pleasure will be the same as the Vespa we have always known, with the addition of technological and innovative connectivity solutions.” Although the Vespa Elettrica is still under development, Piaggio expects production and sales to begin in the second half of 2017.

February 2017 Dubai, UAE - It’s with great pride that we saw Tesla opening officially its business in Middle East, in the UAE. It is another milestones for this proactive country, investing in the sustainable future. Masdar City is a brilliant example. No doubt Tesla will have a fruitful future onsite. Press has related that hundreds of self driving cars has also been pre-ordered. Press has also reported that the Production at Fremont factory has been put on hold for a few days in order to calibrate the first Model 3 prototypes which will soon be assembled. It goes without saying that we all look forward to the final rendering, not to mention the ‘Elon Musk Part 3’ Announcement! End of 2016, Tesla has also been reported as the quickest Production Car in the World with the Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode! She is the third fastest accelerating production car ever produced, with a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds (Expected value using max power mode and Motor Trend benchmark). Someone bored can be creative! But we doubt Elon Musk is bored given his myriad of activities and initiatives but He just moved ahead with digging tunnels underneath the cities to bypass the traffic jams! After the Hyperloop Project, and other ‘wild ideas’, He never rests! Another addition to the Family! Great news to maximize your range and pleasure, Tesla has now unleashed the 100D version which is giving us the best range. Nice ‘extra mile’ if you are already looking at a 90D, either upgrade or right from the start, pick up the 100D! Also added to the Family, many OTA upgrades (Autosteer, New Easter Egg with Mars, AP …) and the online availability of the SuperChargers! Last but not least, we also got the Tesla App User Interface refresh, providing the latest end user experience. Brussels Auto Salon 2017 We had a blast at the Grand Opening of the Auto Salon. Tesla was present with two Model X and a Model S, winning Hearts and Minds from the Grand Public. We were very pleased to read the © MARTIN GILLET FEBIAC numbers release for 2016 with 859 cars sold (30 more than 2015). We welcome all these new Owners and Members! The Auto Salon also saw the World Premiere of the First Belgian electric car, the Ecar-333. The Salon featured quite a lot of EV’s, featuring for example the Zoe with the extended range update, the Leaf, the KIA etc. We were very pleased to see them conquering the showfloor!

SuperCharger Arlon - As you have noticed toward the end of December 2016, ‘as planned’, Tesla has opened the Arlon SuperCharger. The nearby hotel Van der Valk is still under construction but this add on to the E411 route is much appreciated for the long journeys for the Winter and Summer holidays, allowing to reach Metz with a few more electrons.

Great to see a P100D Model S powering the ELECTRIC GT Holdings Inc. which promotes sustainable mobility through zero emissions motor sports events and venues. Follow them online http://www.electricGT.co #EGTChampionship We look forward to the first races in 2017. Paris Vignette - Be Careful, like many European cities (eg Cologne in Germany), Paris is now requiring a pass (vignette) Crit’Air in order to enter Paris city center. Should you head to City Center soon or for next holidays, don’t forget to order it online https:// www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/ - Remember that Club is providing courtesy T3 Cable to optimize your mobility in France and avoid an expensive buy for a cable that is used less than once per year. Get in touch if you need it, book early! On Belgian Political level, both on Wallonia and Flanders level, it has been announced that the rules and the premium system will be thoroughly reviewed in the coming years. We do hope this will boost the private Owners to move towards EV’s and a more sustainable roadmap.

TESLA FINALIZES PURCHASE OF SOLARCITY Tesla officially finalized the acquisition of solar energy company SolarCity on November 17 2016, following a vote of approval from the two companies’ shareholders. SolarCity is the largest installer of rooftop solar systems in the US. The purchase by Tesla fits well with its strategy to provide consumers with a full range of end-to-end solutions for the production, storage and consumption of energy. This movement was further supported by Tesla’s launch of new products at the end of last year which included solar roof tiles and an at-home battery, called the Powerwall 2.0, which can store 13.5 kWh of energy. According to the official press statement, Tesla expects with SolarCity to create an tightly integrated solar and battery combination that will provide grid-independent, renewable backup power today, and help customers to hedge against energy price fluctuations of the future.

TESLA INCREASES PRICE OF MODEL S Tesla has increased the base price of the Model S by $2,000. Tesla implemented the price increase for the Model S in November. Although the manufacturer did not give an explanation for the rise, a likely cause could be the cost of car’s updated Autopilot hardware, which is pre-installed, even if buyers choose not to purchase the self-driving software.

Another factor could be the introduction of the new, lower priced Model 3, the constructor’s new ‘entry level’ vehicle, with a base selling price expected to be in the range of $35,000. This gives Tesla the opportunity to raise the price of the Model S and better realign it with the cost of its market competitors.

CANCELLATION OF BRUSSELS FORMULA E 2017 WON’T THWART AMBITIONS FOR NEXT YEAR, SAY ORGANISERS The first Brussels Formula E, planned for 1 July 2017, has been cancelled. Cecoforma, organisers of the Belgian race, plan to return in force next year. Target for 2018 – not just the ePrix, but a two-day symposium designed to place Brussels in pole position as the European capital for green mobility. TEXT & PHOTOS: JOANNA PAYS 22

news

A statement from Cecoforma, issued in January, explained that the regional government of Brussels had called off this year’s race, following concerns from the local authorities and residents of Koekelberg over potential traffic congestion. “The fact that we have had to cancel the Brussels ePrix this year is a bitter pill to swallow – not just for us the organisers but also for Brussels” said Stéphan Uhoda, CEO of Cecoforma. “The official reason given was that the date selected is a holiday weekend, making it difficult to close the tunnel in Koekelberg. Our first choice in Brussels had in fact originally been around Heysel, but the region was unable to confirm the date.”

BRUSSELS AS A WORLD CAPITAL FOR GREEN TRANSPORT “The message that I would now like to give to the readers of SuperCharged Magazine, is that being a host for the Formula E is a fantastic opportunity for the region” adds Stéphan Uhoda. “What we would also like to do, once the event is confirmed for next year, is to add a two day symposium on e-mobility. This would include representatives from the European Commission, the Brussels Region and the Municipalities, as well as the academic and economic sectors. The conference would take place on Thursday and Friday, with the ePrix itself following on the Saturday. The reasoning behind the symposium, is to position Brussels as one of the world’s capitals for green transport, alongside cities such as Montreal, New York, Berlin and London. These are ideas which need to be more clearly defined - but we have already received positive responses from a number of stakeholders.”

SUPPORT FOR THE BRUSSELS EPRIX IN 2018 The challenge now for the organisers, is to ensure that the city and region of Brussels are 100% behind the project for 2018, so that the exact location and date can be confirmed. “Since the cancellation of this summer’s event, we have received many messages of support and we are aiming to build on this community of supporters, to push for the ePrix to take place in Brussels in 2018” says Uhoda. “Our aim is to gather around 100,000 online messages from followers, showing their support for the race to take place next year. We don’t like the idea of a petition, but more of using these messages to encourage institutional backing. TRUMP – THE IMPLICATIONS FOR ENERGY AND CLIMATE INTERVIEW WITH SVEIN TVEITDAL The election of President Trump has sent alarm bells ringing with environmentalists. Svein Tveitdal, formerly Division Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and now CEO of Klima 2020, shared his take on the potential implications.

TEXT & PHOTOS: JOANNA PAYS

29

What are your green credentials? My mission has been to bridge the gap between climate science, policy makers and the general public. For 15 years I managed various assignments with UNEP – which is the agency which coordinates the UN’s environmental activities. Part of this time, I also shared responsibility for the secretariat to the International Panel for Climate Change I Geneva with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

2 degrees above pre-industrial levels. As countries have made voluntary agreements to reduce their emissions, Trump could say that the pledges made by Obama are not legally binding. With a major stakeholder like the US now looking like it will not honour its commitments, the chances to achieve the goals set in Paris, which require faster and stronger emission cuts than pledged there, I now see as literally zero.

What is your take on President Trump’s environmental intentions?

Global warming is accelerating and 2016 was the warmest year on record. The Arctic and the Antarctic regions are heating up much faster than the global average and Arctic ice cover in September has shrunk by almost half over the last 30 years. The earth’s ice and snow covering reflects 85% of solar energy back into space – an effect known as ‘albedo’ – while land and water absorb 85% of the sun’s heat into the planet. Due to the reduced albedo effect, the Arctic is about to be transformed from a thermal shield to an accelerator of global warming.

The situation actually appears to be worse than I anticipated with regards to climate change and renewable energies. It looks like Trump is dedicated to his dangerous ideas of denying climate science and promote technology of the past. I don’t know whether he will go as far as to withdraw the US from the Climate Convention - but he may well use the seat at the table to sabotage progress. I also think he will ignore the climate agreement made in Paris during COP21, which aims to limit global temperatures to well below

The need for government action on climate warming is becoming critical but US subsidies for fossil energies are four to five times higher than for renewable energies. The fossil fuel industry has taken over the White House. Donald Trump has nominated a climate science denialist, with, to take over leadership of the country’s Environmental Protection Agency. Frankly I am scared about this - and so are a huge number of climate scientists.

At Klima2020, I work on climate consulting, green business development and lecturing. I also make it a point to communicate regularly with the wider community on issues related to climate change and the latest scientific reports. Twitter is my preferred channel and I have over 200,000 twitter followers.

Elon Musk has said that the Trump presidency won’t hurt Tesla — would you agree? I agree to some extent, as the market for Tesla is more of a global market. For their domestic market it’s not such good news, as the government will not be supporting the costs of the green shift to EVs. Trump prefers to subsidise the technologies of the past, rather than EVs, solar and wind technologies. Tesla could grow much faster in the US with government support, like in Norway where now 1/3 of new cars are electric. But Trump will not want to hurt its global development. He wants Tesla to continue to be a success story, as its good for the US economy and the job market. Going forwards, the media’s role in revealing the truth and informing the public of what is really going on with the environment is crucial. We need to make sure that individuals are armed with the real facts. THE JOURNEY On August 14 2016, the Storm World Tour set out from Eindhoven on the first step of its journey through 16 countries. The convoy comprised two motorcycles and seven vans stocked with supplies, batteries and other equipment. All 23 of the team members who had contributed to the engineering, logistical and communications aspects of the project, joined the expedition for all or part of the tour. After leaving Europe, the group then rode through the ancient realms of the silk road, from Turkey and Iran, via stops in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, through to the South East coast of China and the port of Shanghai. Travelling by ship to Seattle, it then made its way down the Pacific coast and across to New York, before sailing over the Atlantic. Back in Europe, members of the Tesla Owners Club joined the group for the final leg, through France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Finally, after 80 days and 23,000 kilometers, the Storm team crossed the finishing line in Eindhoven, on November 2.

THE CHALLENGES But that is only part of the story. The development of Storm Wave was itself a two-year journey. Every aspect of the bike was completely custom-designed and constructed, from scratch, by a team of senior engineering students from the Eindhoven University of Technology. The bike, when fully charged, has a maximum range of 380 km, reaching 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h.

“The most exciting developments were the innovations we made with the battery, which has a huge range in terms of autonomy” explained Storm team member Maartje Verhoek. “The bike’s Lithiumion 18650 batteries have 24 separate modules that can be ‘hotswapped’ in full or part. Keeping the weight of the bike down was just one of the challenges. The faring was 3D printed and the frame is made from aluminum. The versatility is that the weight of the bike can be reduced from 375 kg with a full battery back, down to 240 kg with just 6 modules. Charging time is around 6 hours. A low point was when the bike broke down just two days into the journey – but what we learnt is, if you have a strong team working towards the same goal, you can make even the impossible possible.”

PROJECT TAKE AWAYS Guidance on the project was provided by Professor Maarten Steinbuch, a leading expert in electric propulsion, energy management and robotics, as well as founder of the university’s Automotives study department. “The purpose of Project Storm was to show the world that electric mobility is already feasible. On another scale, it also gave us the opportunity to directly communicate with local communities and inspire them to make more environmentally-friendly choices. As well as achieving international media coverage, the team interacted with like-minded companies, institutions and universities all along the tour. What is special about the team is that they are students, young people, telling their own story and they have so much energy and enthusiasm. It has really helped to raise the profile of our university and the students have gained experience in areas that will complement their technical skills, to make them valuable employees as they go into industry”. “Prices of electric vehicles are becoming more ‘democratic’ and, as from this year, there will be new models coming onto the market with a range of at least 300 km with a price tag of less than 35,000 euros. From that point onwards, we will see a huge take up of electric driving. For me, the key takeaway from Storm is that the transition to e-mobility is happening now - and it’s happening fast. My forecast is that by 2020, a fifth of all new car sales in the Netherlands will be electric – and that by 2025, this will rise to 75%”. VAN DESSEL INSURANCE BROKERS CUSTOMISED RISK MANAGEMENT, WITH SPECIALIST ADVICE Van Dessel Insurance Brokers was founded in 1946. The company has remained faithful to its origins in Berlaar, and 70 years later, the headquarters are still based there. Now run by the third generation, the family business has grown into a major player that combines a strong local connection with a sizeable international scope. TEXT & PHOTOS: KANTOOR VAN DESSEL

“Van Dessel has been among the top 5 insurance brokers in Belgium for many years”, CEO Patrick Verlinden proudly points out. “Although we also insure private individuals, our focus is on enterprises. And that’s the segment in which we continue to grow, each year. Over 90% of our clientele is currently made up of companies and small businesses. We consider it our role to support these clients in their entrepreneurship. By freeing them from worries about potential risks, we allow them to focus on what they do best: doing business.” Chris Govaerts, Operations Director, explains: “We want to offer our clients peace of mind, as efficiently as possible. That’s why we always assume that prevention is better than a cure, so we eliminate as many potential hazards as possible through prevention. However, it’s never possible to achieve zero risk, so we also want to be there to defend our clients’ interests in the event that something goes wrong.”

QUALITY AND ADDED VALUE Patrick Verlinden: “We do not do more than other brokers, but we aim to do it better. Our basic principle is that we want to offer added value every step of the way, certainly when it comes to assessing and covering risks. We listen carefully to our client’s needs and expectations, and then develop their customised insurance package. Our best asset is our ability to offer all types of insurance. Combined with our independent position: we cooperate with numerous insurers, enabling us to find the best insurance for any risk, in terms of both conditions and price.”

“Quality is an absolute priority”, adds Chris Govaerts. “Also when it comes to service. We are constantly working to improve our service in order to provide the best possible approach for our clients at all times. For example, with VD Fleet Solutions, we developed our own software that enables our clients to manage contracts and claims for their fleet themselves.”

MEETING THE DIGITALIZATION CHALLENGE “Digitalization is also something we are actively working on each day”, notes Chris Govaerts. “The internet of things, robots, 3D printing, artificial intelligence: these are all developments that will have a huge impact on the way we live and on the insurance market. As brokers we need to respond to the new risks that this is going to create and adapt ourselves to the digitised world, in order to continue to be able to meet our clients’ needs.” “Moreover, we are noticing that our advisory role is becoming increasingly important. With all the new and complex risks out there, it is our job to help clients understand their exposure and to show them what kind of insurance they will need to cover these risks.”

FOCUS ON THE CLIENT HR Director Ronald Van de Velde explains how the internal structure is also aimed towards supplying clients with the best possible advice. “We’ve defined our clients into six segments, each with its own specialised department. In this way we can offer them a personal approach and specialised advice. It also enables us to extend our range with our own products developed on the basis of our extensive knowledge.”

insurance

John Stoefs, Marketing & External Relations Director, continues: “Our VD Solutions – our own products for specific target groups and risks – represent a tremendous value for the client because they bring together all the types of cover needed in a single package. For example, with VD EV (Electric Vehicle) Solutions, we have a unique insurance for Tesla cars, whereas VD Manager Solutions is a comprehensive insurance solution for management companies and CEOs, for both their business and private activities. Moreover, we are intensively investing in online technologies such as a new website, social media and e-marketing, because we want to offer our clients more web-based information and services.”

This choice has also had an impact on the internal organisation of the company, according to Ronald Van de Velde. “Our business units are run by young staff, in part because they belong to a generation with a better feeling for digitalization. We invite them to give input on how to serve future clients digitally. It’s simply easier to visualise if you are a digital native yourself.” In short, Van Dessel has a clear goal for the coming years: to continue to grow and innovate. Ronald Van de Velde: “Our employees represent both our human capital and our future. That’s why we want to give them plenty of room to take initiative. But always as a team: we are all committed to facing our exciting challenge ahead, together!”

FROM TESLA ROADSTER TO MODEL X VIA MODEL S THE JOURNEY OF AN EARLY ADOPTER When Paul Bossens took possession of a Roadster Signature in 2010, he became the very first customer for Tesla in Belgium. This was just the beginning of his love affair, as he has since added the Model S and Model X to his Tesla stable. TEXT & PHOTOS: JOANNA PAYS

50

Based in Leuven, Paul Bossens is the head of an IT research company that shares Tesla’s innovative spirit. “I have always had a passion for cars and I know how to dismantle and reassemble a combustion engine by heart” says Paul. “Mechanics often stay with what they know but as soon as I saw the Tesla engine, at the Paris Auto Show, I wanted one. It was a small test circuit and I could only accelerate a little, but I could already see that it was really powerful. The fact that there was no noise really pleased me and by the first corner I already knew that it was perfect for me.”

SUPERCHARGED 2017/04

interview

What were the challenges? “At the beginning, I was only able to charge the Roadster at home but as it has a range of around 300 km, it was already sufficient for my needs. I am not considering the 3.0 battery upgrade, as I don’t believe the autonomy has gone down.”

51

“The other thing is that it is a sports car with quite a basic, almost spartan, interior. The suspension is a little hard, but the electric motor more than compensates for this.”

“The main reason I have purchased the Model X as well, is because of the Autopilot system, which I think will really help with driving. I will have the Autopilot 2.0 version and I am expecting to receive the car at the end of March. Another reason for the Model X, to be honest, is to expand my collection!”

What are your key takeaways on owning this astonishing first Tesla Model?

Do you believe the future of driving is Full-Electric?

“I have the Roadster Signature version, which is the very first series. There are not many of these in the world, so it feels very special. This is truly a beautiful car and the performance is great. I love driving through twisting mountain roads – or through forests with the roof open. There is no noise, so you can even hear the birds and no smell of petrol – just the scent of the trees.”

“The choice of models is limited and prices are still creating a barrier to entry for the time being, but what Tesla has done has opened the market for everyone. When new car technologies arrive, they are always introduced in the high end range. Over the time these technologies become more democratized to the mass market. In the future the question of autonomy will be reversed and petrol pumps will gradually start to be replaced by charging stations.”

“The reaction to the Roadster has always been very positive and what strikes me is that it is people of all styles and ages that come over to admire the car.”

How is your experience different with the Model S and what are you expecting from the Model X? “I ordered the Model S as soon it came out. The big advantage is that, compared to the Roadster, it is a luxury car as well as being fast. I have the Signature P85 version, which accelerates from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds. Another benefit is that I now have access to the network of Tesla Supercharger stations.”

“The future of driving is uncontestably electric, for a host of reasons. Technically speaking, an electric motor is better adapted for a car than a thermic one, as speed changes are very dynamic. Clearly the second reason is that there are no emissions from the vehicle and thirdly they are more economical to run.”

EPAMAROC CO-HOSTS EV MEET-UP IN MARRAKECH DURING COP22 Each year COP conferences attract parallel events to further the opportunities for lobbying and networking alongside key climate decision makers and influencers. Three companies - Green Mobility Africa, Tour Véhicules Electriques and EPAMAROC, invited electric vehicle owners from five countries to meet up during COP22. The aims were to raise awareness on e-mobility and lobby for more charging stations in Morocco.

Could you tell us about your latest intervention, during COP22 in Morocco? During COP22 - I was speaking on behalf of Climate Parliament, an international network of legislators dedicated to accelerating the migration to renewable energies. I was there to promote an initiative called the Green Grid Network, which aims to connect all the world’s green power plants. The presentation was very well received. Among the attendees were the World Bank and Energy Ministers from over 10 different countries. Too often at the COP conferences, we have a lot of interesting discussions, but not enough actions initiated. The global grid is a tangible way for nations to work together towards achieving climate objectives.

EPAMAROC is a company committed to ecological and socially responsible projects in Morocco, particularly e-mobility. Its founder, Silvia Brutschin, is the owner of a TWIKE, the first electric vehicle type to have been approved in Morocco. “Organizing an EV event during COP22 in Morocco was the ideal way to promote e-mobility in the country. The Moroccan people – and its monarch - are very enthusiastic about technology, but it is a nation of huge contrasts when it comes to consumer buying power. We need simpler, cheaper versions of EVs that are better adapted for the market here. Two excellent pieces of news to come out of COP22 are that there will be at least two Moroccan-made EVs coming into production and we will start to see more charging stations, including with our COP partners in Morocco, Shell and Movenpick Hotels. What is your take of the follow up on the two most recent COPs, in Paris and Morocco? My general feeling during the COP events is that the people who are negotiating do not really understand the dynamics of the energy sector and what needs to be done. I’d go a step further and say that a bigger problem is that setting up any major energy project takes at least five years – which, in many cases, is longer than the decision making politicians will be in Office. However, on the positive side, the Climate Parliament’s roundtable has raised a lot of enthusiasm and I can clearly see more and more countries developing connections to an international green grid – particularly China. France and Greenland have also said that they would like to build a huge interconnection between the two countries. A great idea for the Belgian government would be to build an electrical connection with Morocco, as it is currently developing huge solar power plants and we would then be able to import cheaper solar energy during the winter.

What should this year’s COP23, in Bonn later this year, be focusing on? A key theme for the COP23 in Bonn should be the benefits of the green global grid and how we are going to organize and build it. My goal will be to convince governments to move forward on this, commit and make it the backbone of sustainable energy supply.

TIME TO DISCOVER MONTREAL AS IT CELEBRATES ITS 375 TH YEAR In 2016, Montreal was voted the second best city in the world to live in. Next year it may even make it to the top position, as 2017 is set to be a vintage year for festivities. The city is preparing double celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canadian confederation and 375 years since the founding settlement of Montreal. With no less than 175 events taking place in the city throughout the year, what could be a better time to visit?

OLD MONTRÉAL AND OLD PORT OF MONTRÉAL ( © TOURISME MONTRÉAL )

MONTREAL’S ORIGINS Montreal was originally the home of Iroquian Indians for almost 8,000 years. It was in 1642 that the first settlers from France arrived on the banks of the city’s St Lawrence River. From there the town gradually became a major centre for French fur trading, as well as a military post. Over the centuries the city has seen wars with the Mohawk tribes and then, with the British in 1760. Since then the city has remained firmly bilingual, giving it a unique European charm. The city of Montreal is in fact located on an island, between the St Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. Its port is the Atlantic gateway to the famous St Lawrence Seaway, which stretches 600 km through to the Great Lakes of North America. Tourism and culture are among the city’s leading sectors, although with four universities, including McGill, the region’s premier exports are in the hi-tech and aerospace sectors. Although Montreal is Canada’s second largest city, it is easy to walk around. A stroll from the old city to the downtown area takes just 25 minutes and you do not really need a car to visit the rest of the city, as it boasts an excellent metro transportation network. There are plenty of green spaces scattered around the city and the main island has large national parks, with forests to enjoy. The jewel in the crown is the 200 hectare Mount Royal park, where Montrealers go to get a breath of air on a hot day, to cross-country ski in the winter, to picnic, to jog and to ice skate. Situated on a mountain, Mount Royal is the best place to relax and enjoy unhindered views across the city, all its districts and beyond over the river.

HOMA NEIGHBOURHOOD’S OLYMPIC PARK AND MUSEUMS Montreal is divided into several neighbourhoods and one can easily spend several days in each, as there is so much to see. Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, known as HoMa, is the district in and around Montreal’s Olympic Park. Constructed for the 1976 Olympic Games, it is now a huge leisure area of green spaces, multiple sporting activities and museums. A must see in the area is the Biodome, which recreates four different natural environments from around the Americas – including a Maple Forest and a Tropical Rain Forest. Each of the environments houses animals and plants in their natural habitat. Other attractions in HoMa include the Planetarium, the Botanical Gardens, festivals throughout the year and ice skating.

UNDERGROUND CITY Montreal’s famed Underground City is a 32km network of underground complexes and tunnels which link the city’s buildings in the downtown and old quarter districts. Many of the city’s residents use the network for commuting, especially in winter. Here too can be found shopping complexes, restaurants and other commerces. If wanted, one could virtually spend one’s life underground – but Montreal has way too much to offer, even in the winter.

QUARTIER DES SPECTACLES Montreal plays host to no less than 108 festivals every year. The city’s main entertainment and arts district is the Quartier des Spectacles. The area is home to several concert venues, as well as theatres, parks, water fountain displays, restaurants and the city’s

Museum of Contemporary Art. The district hosts numerous festivals and events all year round, from winter wonderland spectaculars to summer music festivals – including the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Walking tours of the area are also available.

MONTREAL OLD TOWN Downtown, on the north bank of St Lawrence River, is VieuxMontreal, one of the city’s major attractions. It is here that the first settlers from France began to build, back in the 1600s and some of the district’s oldest buildings date back to this time. The Vieux Quartier has the feel of a historic European town, with cobblestone streets and a café culture. Hotels, restaurants, galleries and shops, as well as some of the city’s key monuments, contribute to making this one of the Montreal’s biggest tourist attractions and a pleasant area for discovering by foot.

64

The Old Town and its Port are far from being just a visitor attraction though, but a real, very active living and working neighbourhood. Place d’Armes is the heart of the Old Montreal and a capsule of the city’s architectural history. Here all the key periods of Montréal’s past are gathered in one place - from 17th century buildings, through

to the city’s first skyscraper. Notre-Dame Basilica, also on the Place d’Armes, is a must see in the historic district. Its magnificent gothic stone architecture and dazzling interior in bright colours date back to the early 1800s, while its stained glass windows depict scenes from the religious history of Montreal. As part of the 375th anniversary celebrations the Basilica will be illuminated by a world class sound and light show, both inside and out, as from spring 2017.

ANNIVERSARY EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS Kicking off the “VIVE 375” anniversary celebrations, Cité Mémoire is an outdoor exhibition on a massive scale. Every evening, scenes of Montreal and the people who have shaped its city are projected on to buildings, trees and monuments around the city. An interactive app gives viewers details on each work. Montréal Avudo, from May 17 to September 2, is a show that has been created exclusively for the 375th anniversary by Swiss physical theatre troupe Compagnia Finzi Pasca. This multimedia extravaganza will include over 100 free performances near the Old Port area. Close to 180,000 spectators will be able to see this stunning work as it unfolds on the waters of St Lawrence River.

Then, located in the Quartier des Spectacles, is the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. Works on display range from painting and sculpture, to installation art, new media and video installations. The Contemporary Art Museum is also a social gathering place, as it has a sculpture garden and a glass walled restaurant with great outdoor dining terrace. On the first Friday of each month, the museum stays open until 9pm to host “Friday Nocturnes,” with cocktails and live music.

Those interested in finding out more about the origins of Montreal should head to Pointe-à-Callière, the city’s archeological and history museum. As the museum is located on the first settlement of Montreal, visitors can view archeological digs on First Nations’ sites, as well as some well-preserved remains of the city’s original European fortifications. A film explains the founding of the city and its development.

For art lovers, Montreal’s Museum of Fine Arts is Montreal’s largest museum, spread across over 45,000 square metres and five pavilions. The fifth pavilion is new and has just been opened to the public. The museum’s permanent collection includes over 42,000 works of art.

The city has many fine international, as well as boutique, hotels. One of the best is Le Saint-Sulpice Hotel, located next to the Notre

Programming for the winter season will feature sports and activities for all tastes, including an ‘interactive technological obstacle course’, dogsled rides and extreme sports. Other happenings will include free concerts, shows, outdoor events, sports competitions and street entertainment throughout the city, all through the year.

Dame Basilica. Rated 4 Stars, 4 Diamonds, it offers 108 suites, most of which feature a fireplace or balcony. Among the new openings in 2016 are the Marriott Le Renaissance Centre-Ville, a boutique hotel in the downtown district and the Hotel William Gray, near the old port, both of which offer roof terraces. Next year will see the opening of the 20 story Hotel Monville, in the Quartier des Spectacles, with 269 guest rooms and suites, as well as meetings rooms. Montreal is a very sociable city and getting together with family and friends is an important part of life. Residents are friendly and welcoming towards visitors and, as a city with four universities, there is a lively and diverse nightlife of restaurants, bars and musical entertainment. One of the things that Montreal excels in, is gastronomy and it is the perfect destination for food lovers. Restaurants use local products from the region of Quebec whenever possible and even the city’s sports bars serve excellent food, while many have their own beer breweries. Restaurants are everywhere and in fact Montreal is the city with the second highest number of restaurants per capita – just after New York. “There are 6,900 restaurants and eateries on the island of Montreal alone, so restaurants need to be really competitive, both in terms of quality and pricing” says Catherine Morellon of Tourisme Montreal. At the top end of the scale, Toqué! restaurant is regarded by many as the best restaurant in Montréal and one of the best in Canada. Its chef and owners Normand Laprise and Christine Lamarche, focus on innovative market-fresh cuisine. The emphasis is on hand selected locally sourced products of the utmost quality, such as line-caught blue fin tuna. Over its 23 years, Toqué! has accumulated some of the highest accolades, including the CAA/AAA Five Diamond rating.

“We are lucky to have four very distinct seasons throughout the year, which give four completely different ways to enjoy the city” says Catherine Morellon. “During the summer we have festivals taking place non-stop from June to August - and the great thing is that for 90% of them, an important part of their programming is free. It’s really vibrant here in the summer and as soon as the spring sunshine is out all the terraces are open.” “Autumn, with the fall foliage is gorgeous and Canada is known for that, but it’s not the only time to visit. We really make the most of the winter time here and have so many activities to enjoy, including snow festivals in the parks, winter sports, free ice rinks and of course ice hockey - which is a religion here! Bigger ski slopes are just half an hour outside of Montreal and are lit up till late in the night. So throughout our four seasons, there is so much going on, that anytime is an excellent time to visit Montreal.”

GETTING THERE Air Transat offers direct routes from Brussels to Montreal three times per week, in the summer season from 1 May to 30 October. Cabins are configured in Economy and Club – the airline’s business class. As from 2017, passengers from Brussels will be able to prolong their journeys to Montreal on to Toronto, Quebec or Vancouver. Air Canada flies direct from Brussels to Montreal with up to seven flights a week. As from 9th February 2017, the airline will be adding Premium Economy class to its existing Economy and Business Class cabins. SWISS flies up to 7 flights a week from Zurich to Montreal, with fast, smooth connections to Brussels Airport. Aircraft are configured in Economy, Business and First Class cabins. Those flights operated with Boeing 777 aircraft are fitted with the SWISS’s latest new business cabins, with some of the longest lie flat seats of any airline. DIGITAL ACCOUNTING FOR BIG AND SMALL COMPANIES Even if many companies are still groaning under mountains of paperwork today, there is no doubt that the classic burdens of paper invoices, receipts, expense reports, etc. are about to qualify for a spot in the museum. We are rapidly moving towards a ‘paperless’ and ‘mobile’ office and even our accounting offices, whose business model has barely changed in ages, are going to have to follow suit. A frightening prospect? Not necessarily. Mon3aan, an accountancy start-up from Gavere, opted for fully digitalisation from day 1. 70

EXACT CLOUD AWARD FOR INNOVATION

THEIR OWN DIGITAL PLATFORM

After a management buy-out at Moore Stephens, Günther Van Gysegem started accounting firm Mon3aan the end of 2015. Unlike many other accounting firms, they did not experience a transition phase into ‘digital bookkeeping’. Instead, they rose to the challenge of going digital immediately. 95% of their clients are currently served digitally. Their resolute and certainly innovative choice has already won them the ‘Exact Cloud Award’ for innovation. In the first place because they use several platforms to serve their clients (mail, portal and mobile) and make all documents and reports available to the client in real-time. And secondly, because the digital implementation is considered very important within their own organisation.

The thing that distinguishes Mon3aan from other, ‘classic’ accountancy firms is that they built their own digital platform in which various existing software packages were linked to each other. Clients can scan and send their documents, such as purchase invoices, details for a VAT declaration and even old-fashioned receipts, via this platform. And the digitalisation is taken even a few steps further, such as the daily collection of coda files, which makes bank records obsolete, as well offering the option for clients to create sales invoices on the platform and send them digitally.

CONSULTING, CHECKING To ensure smooth operation of all the software, the accounting platform uses Exact Online, which is also very suitable for linking other applications to, such as the ‘Lightspeed’ cash system for the hospitality industry, Teamleader (Online CRM software for KMOs) and Xpenditure, which is used for uploading expense reports and submitting expense receipts. In short: at Mon3aan, everything is geared to offering the client a multi-functional platform that meets today’s expectations around accounting. In principle, it is the client – not the accounting firm - that does the preparatory work, such as scanning and sending all documents. This is not required, but we have found that a large percentage of Mon3aan’s clients choose to do this, so that the accounting firm’s role is more about consulting and especially checking. For a classic accounting firm to transfer to digital accounting, it does require a substantial investment. Günther Van Gysegem is the first to admit that the first few months of Mon3aan were challenging; there was the purchase of the (expensive) software, but training the employees be able to effectively work with the software platform quickly and easily, also required a lot of effort.

‘DIGITAL BOOKKEEPING’ VERSUS THE LAW

LARGE AND SMALL COMPANIES

Of course, you can only switch completely to ‘digital bookkeeping’ if the government allows it 100%. There are a few action points for this, according to Günther Van Gysegem. For some accounting categories and activities, the government permits a digital version. Via the Xpenditure software, scanned receipts can be submitted digitally and you can also save them ‘in de cloud’. This can be done because in this case, there is a VAT ruling that applies and the administrator has given her approval. The same is true for digital sales invoices (which are equal to the paper version) and any changes made via a digital credit note. Unlike with the sales invoices, there is still some lack of clarity around the digital storage of the purchase invoices.

And then there is the question: what if your company wants to start working digitally? In that case, come and see us at Mon3aan and we will help you analyse the company. Based on the results, the appropriate accounting software packages will be proposed and any other items you want to include can be integrated into the platform. This is particularly an issue for larger companies, Günther Van Gysegem argues. But small companies can also be digitalised very well. Mon3aan is convinced that this digital accounting will definitely be making a break-through in the near future. Pure accounting work will make way for more business consulting and fiscal matters. In the case of Mon3aan, that includes applied specialisation in the law for continuity of companies, within the framework of restructuring companies.
