1 IN FO A brief introduction and background research of the Hong Kong Science Museum
INFORMATION OF SCIENCE MUSEUM Since its opening in April 1991, the Hong Kong Science Museum has proven itself to be an ideal and unique place for learning science.Through presenting quality exhibitions and fun science programmes in an enjoyable environment, the Museum serves to popularize science to the public and support science education in schools. In contrast to traditional museums, visitors at the Science Museum are encouraged to explore exhibits in their own way and thus experience the fun of discovery learning.
Occupying a permanent exhibition area of 6,500 square metres, the Museum houses over 500 exhibits. Nearly 70 percent of them are interactive and suitable for visitors of all ages. Among them, the most prominent exhibit is the largest device of its kind in the world: The Energy Machine. Another attraction is the DC-3 airplane which is the first local airliner and the first exhibit moved into the Museum building.

3 PROBLEM Reasons behind unpleasant journey The fault of the existing signage and way finding system
PROBLEMS For Traveler
Inconsistent Signage Suites Different font Different shape and style
Inconsistent Graphic Style Without Hierarchy Misleading Graphic
Lack of indicate mark Traveler don’t know where they are and how can they go to other zone
PROBLEMS For Staff & Disable
Lack of Signage No indication for staff Not only for staff. It can prevent traveler go wrong side
Insufficient Signage for Handicap Facility Lack of handicap signage direct them to travel museum
The original signage system suffers from lots of problem, causing users inconveniences. For, the refined version signage system, unity is the key, same graphic style are use through out the whole science museum. The aim is to tackle all of the problem in a professional way.
Reference
We approach a modern and clean touch, linear, stylistic. These reference provides a valuable graphic for us to learn and extract from. Both overhead hanging signs and wall signs are listed as reference, it came in different proportion and suites, perfect for similar application.

Overhead signs usually include a small amount of information but in a larger scale. It place above the two meter line but below the three meter line in order to reach the head tilt angle to the most comfort reading angle of 45 degree. Marking zones or staff passage for example tend to use this kind of overhead signage.
The size of the large overhead sign is an eye catching 800x600mm, in depth of 20mm. A thin light box is placed on the lower part of the sign, indicating the nature of the sign, yellow for primary information, blue for secondary information and white for general information.
Smaller overhead signage is used for supportive information like toilet sign and cashier sign. Usually highlight in yellow, users are easier to spot the signage and gain the most effectiveness.
The size of the small overhead sign is a reasonable 250x100mm, in depth of 20mm. It would not drag too much attention but at the same time easy to spot on. Pictogram is mostly use in this sign suit.
Sign Suites The Signage Suites have a modern touch work in connect with the graphic style of the pictogram designed. One right conner cropped out creating a dynamic feeling. There are three main types of sign suites, wall sign, over-headed sign and erected sign. Wall signs are used in different occasions, usually only include single information.
Erected signage has two types of suites, one for floor plan and one for way finding system. For floor plan, colour white is used as it is a general information. The size of the floor plan sign is 1200x1800mm, in depth of 120mm. Large enough for users to clearly read. On the top left corner placed the floor level, underneath is the floor plan and index. Information is put above waist and no higher than two meters for maximising readability. Same story in way finding erected sign suites. The size of the it is 494x1500mm, in depth of 120mm. Coloured light box highlight is placed on top and at the bottom of the suit, nature of the suit can be immediately determine by the colour of the suit. This suits are used in the intersection, mainly intersection of exhibition zones.
Wall signs vary in size, depends on the information obtained. For a single pictogram, size of a rectangular 130x100mm is used. Generally for indication of places, cashier, stairs, handicapped facility e.c. . For door signs, a slightly larger size of a square 140x140mm is used. Indication of male or female toilet is one example. For directory, size of a rectangular 500x950mm is used. This sign suit usually put along side with the elevator.
