IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY I

t really would be wonderful if the places God calls us to minister would be comfortable, easy, and the harvest would be abundant.

Thinking about the cost of ministering in missions, I remember a service I sat in as a teenager. Sitting on an easel in the front of the sanctuary were large pictures of children. I wondered what this was all about. The missionary couple began to share their story. They had labored in the mission field of Iran. Their assignment was not an easy one, but they had an overwhelming love for the Iranian people. They told of sharing their faith, described the people they came to love and what it meant to be laboring in that harvest field. The wife and husband pointed to the pictures and with tears streaming down their faces told the story. There had been an accident on one of their trips to an outlying place. The road was narrow and an accident occurred. All of their children, those in the pictures, were killed, and to make matters worse they were blamed for the accident even though it was not their fault. These parents stood at the altar beside the pictures and told us that they laid their children to rest in that faraway land. They said, “We planted precious seeds in the ground believing that in doing so there would be a harvest of souls in that land.” We can ask all the questions, the what “ifs” like what if they had not gone to that country, what if they had chosen not to go to that outlying area but they did. I can tell you that in that service my heart was broken, and I wondered if I would be willing to go and surrender all if I knew what was ahead. As I reflect about this memory I am reminded there are faithful servants of our God laboring in difficult places. Some have sacrificed so much and given even unto death. God’s call comes and we answer. No strings attached. Whether we are in easy places or hard and difficult fields of labor our Father asks that we answer and obey. We serve Him because we love Him and are obedient to what He asks of us no matter the cost.

Why Missions?

Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord” (Acts 11: 20-21).

e all are creatures of habit. Sometimes it’s scary just how tied to my habitual lifestyle I find myself. However, this is nothing new to human nature because people have been creatures of habit for as long as they have been on this planet. That includes the Early Church who formed the habit of sharing the good news of the gospel only with fellow Jews. Then gradually someone started coloring outside the lines. First, Philip preached to the Samaritans. Next, Peter ventured, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to the house of a Roman Centurion and shared the message of Jesus. Finally, an incredible thing happened when some bold believers ventured out and began to share the gospel with Gentiles. The Jerusalem Church did not found the first major Gentile church as a result of planned missionary activity. Instead, daring members of the church chose to act. The church had been forced to leave Jerusalem because of persecution, but they only shared the gospel with fellow Jews. Then we read these remarkable words from

the book of Acts: “Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord” (Acts 11: 20-21). This is the work of the Holy Spirit. These unnamed individuals did what no one else dared to do—share the gospel beyond the familiar regions with people who were different. This, without a doubt, is one of the greatest events in the history of the church. The gospel barrier was broken—the gospel was now on a world-wide mission. The gospel belongs to all people everywhere, regardless if the government permits the preaching of the gospel message. When Jesus gave the Great Commission, he said “Go into all the world.” He didn’t make exceptions for those places where you find a closed door. Thank God

for these first missionaries who rightly understood that the gospel is for all people. Our world now has many closed doors to the gospel, but that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean that the hearts of the people are closed, nor does it mean that the Holy Spirit will not intervene to help us share the message in prohibitive or restricted places. Just as the Holy Spirit was with those unnamed evangelists and caused a great number to believeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;He is doing exactly that when we dare to take his message to different people in difficult places. We have to find ways to overcome the obstacles of geography, language, culture and politics. Our success in overcoming the impediments comes when we rely upon the power of the Holy Spirit. There isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a mountain too high nor a language too difficult, and neither is there a regime too closed that God cannot open doors for the declaration of the gospel. Through the centuries God has done this in the most amazing ways, and he is doing it now

PREACHING THE GOSPEL WHERE IT IS RESTRICTED AND EVEN PROHIBITED

hroughout history, Christians have suffered restrictions and/or prohibitions while preaching the gospel in many nations. Even during this time there are those who sacrifice their lives just for being a follower of Christ. In the city where we currently reside there are restriction in preaching the gospel. We are not allowed to go out in the streets to freely proclaim the gospel. Even knocking on doors to announce the Good News is cause enough to be incarcerated. We fully trust in the Lord that He will do his work and that He is the one who opens doors. One day a neighbour asked my husband what our job was and we told him we were missionaries. To our great surprise came, she then told us she wanted to attend our church!!! On another occasion a cashier at a supermarket shared her own desire to start coming to a church. God opens doors so that we can share his good and perfect way. Some Christians have commented to us that about 15 years ago people use to throw stones at churches and that many Christians were refused rent when searching for living space. Some were discriminated against just because they followed Jesus. Now there is more freedom, but people who experienced these things continue to fear when it comes to sharing the gospel. 10

We met a young man who walks the streets preaching with his friends. (This act is not common for Christians of this city). On various occasions, one of them has been imprisoned for doing just that, and yet none of this stops them. Thanks to the tears of our predecessors there is a new generation of Christians that are taking advantage of the valuable legacy of freedom they have received. Currently, we are collaborating as Pastors in a church and we are encouraging people to commit to the great commission â&#x20AC;&#x153;Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.â&#x20AC;? (Matthew 28:19-20 NIV) The Lord is coming soon and we need to preach his gospel at all times. If we cannot openly preach, we must do it with caution, but without fear, because He promised us that He would be with us. We are not alone!

A VERY SUBTLE PERSECUTION: A problem between culture and Christianity INTRODUCTION

he, then, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, presented his speech “Christ, faith and the challenge of cultures” at a conference in Hong Kong on March 2-5, 1993 to the Asian bishops who were in attendance. He began with this: «In his last words, the risen Lord sends his apostles to the ends of the earth: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations; baptize them ... and teach them everything I have commanded you” (Mt. 28:19f; cf. Acts 1:8 )1». From the very moment the apostles receive the commission to go to them, instead of waiting for them to come, the conflict between culture and the gospel has not ceased. In this exposition I propose to present the events occurred in a specific situation amongst the first lines of the early church and how the culture and their acceptance of the gospel created tensions in their interpersonal relationships to the point of putting in danger the quality of life and expansion of that young body of Christ. The text we will be referencing is Acts 6:1-7 and it speaks primarily about the reason the first Deacons of the church were selected.

THE CIRCUMSTANCE

“

And in those days, when the number of the disciples1 was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration”. Acts 6, 1(KJV). In this verse we see an interesting contrast. First we see the number of disciples was multiplied... which show the growth that our early brothers and sisters experienced in those days. Following this, the first descriptive note is that there arose a murmuring. They already knew the price of deception and fatuity when Ananias and Sapphira paid the price of their inheritance with their life (Acts 5:1-6). Growth will always bring risk and where the number of people increase, so the possibility for conflict increases. In this particular situation it has to do with a specific event. Murmuring: there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews. The reason? Because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Wikenhauser believes that when reading this passage one must be reading a very concise summary of the events2. Whether or not this is so, we have the necessary elements to suspect the great clash between cultures. SOME KEY EVENTS

Murmuring. The first highlighted event for this purpose is found right here. The TDNT explains the term γογγυσμòς, - Gognysmós - In its non Christian use carried a sense of a legal claim and the instance that neither justice nor attention has been given to it3. The term, more than a public complaint is an indication of murmur of dissent, something they (the Greeks) dealt with themselves. It is evident that this none-Christian term in its accepted use of complaint that has not been openly avowed is what is highlighted. Gognysmós (γογγυσμòς) is used only four times in the NT4.

The second event that we want to make note of is that until this moment the church was formed by two major groups: Greeks, coming from the Diaspora, bringing their own cultures form their places of origin and whose language is predominantly Greek, now converted to Christianity, and on the other hand Hebrew Jewish people, born in “The land”, speaking Hebrew or Aramaic, also converted to Christianity. Even though both groups are of a Judaist foundation they seem to carry a stigma: cultural shock. The third event corresponds to those who are suffering the Greek Widows. Without going into speculation it is inevitable to ask ourselves: why the Greek widows? We know from other passages like James 1:27 that widows must be taken care of. Paul had much to say to Timothy about the topic; Cf. 1Tim. 5:3, 5, 11, 14 & 16. Virginia R. Azcuy uses a play on words (which is really no game) that is very eloquently done when referring to Inequity vs Inequality5. Will we be present in this first act of inequality? Will the Greek widows suffer because of the presence of Hebrew widows? Fourth, we come to the attention of the apostolic counsel of Acts 6:3 (NKJV); “Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business”. The solution here is that Greeks need to take care of their own. Could we have the right to ask the Hebrews (who evidently were in charge of the distribution of food), to also take care of the Greeks? At this point in history we could say, yes. Another detail: the requirements to fulfill this task: seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom6. We cannot change the moral and spiritual prerequisites to serve the Lord. Any position of service has the same noble meaning if done for the Glory of God, 1 Cor. 10:31 (Cf. Col. 3:17 & 23). It is also evident that in Acts, they are forming foundations and norms for ecclesiastical service. Looking a few chapters back, when Peter decides who will replace Judas, 5 Virginia R. Today,many of us work with people of diverse cultures, maybe we ask our selves: where will I find men like these?Answering this question will make us seriously think about our ecclesiology.

the requirements to fill the spot, have more to do with having been there, seen, and done rather than with esthetic aspects or of spiritual nature, something completely overlooked here. cf. Acts 1:21-22. Because of the names (and because of the” amongst yourselves”) we know the seven men were Greek7. Finally after establishing the body of Deacons, the paragraph concludes triumphantly, Acts 6:7 - So the word of God increased. The number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly, and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

CONCLUSIONS Even though I have run the risk of getting off topic, I wanted to make the aspects of culture and Christianity clear in these events. After proposing the problem which we now understand, we can make some conclusions. 1. The struggle between the new humanity which Christ came to create, breaking down walls of separation amongst people, and the culture of the recipients of the Good news, heirs of a strong sense of exclusivity and participation in a project of redemption with God, was a barrier that only through the operation of the Holy Spirit were they able to overcome. 2. It is impossible to not see the struggle between “biblical” culture represented by the Hebrews and the “pagan” culture represented by the Greeks. 3. From here on it will be common to associate the Hebrew culture with the culture of the kingdom of God and any other culture as pagan. 4. The similar problems described in Acts 10, regarding the possibility of Cornelius and his family participating in the Blessings of the Kingdom, and what Acts 15 describes in regards to the counsel of the Church, show us that this was a test they had to overcome over and over again. 5. Through centuries, this same situation has repeated itself amongst differing cultures. We believe that Christ does not come into conflict with any culture, but rather He overcomes them. “He is above them all”, presenting the Kingdom of God as the only ideal culture. The culture that He himself lived and taught and that which guided the purpose for which He came to fulfill. 6. The pagan elements of some cultures are not more scandalous than the cultural elements that the” Christian world “has canonized. It is certain that our gospel contains a high percentage of our culture. We live our faith from within our culture. 7. All cultural inequality by reason is iniquity in the eyes of God. If there is a culture to which we must adjust our values to, it is the culture of the kingdom and not the other way around.

We do not know of the origin of Nicholas (we assume he was Greek), the proselyte of Antioch.

lor Mendez Quezada, born in Peru, has served the Lord in Peru for many years. She has

planted churches and challenged young people. In the midst of her faithful service to God, He captured her heart and called her to Missions. Since leaving her homeland Flor spent 11 years in the field since she left her home land through the countries in which God wanted her to be in during this time.

– Hi Flor, tell us about your calling.

“I was born in a Christian home where my parents where both pastors. Despite my upbringing, while at the university I had a crisis of faith, but God kept me. He used a Christian group at the university to safeguard me. I started serving in my congregation and it was there while seeing the work my parents did, that God caused me to answer the calling He had placed in my life. For several years I had tried to escape Gods call by making up excuses. Then I began to identify with the prophet Jeremiah when he said to God “O Lord, You induced me, and I was persuaded; You are stronger than I, and have prevailed”; and I answered his calling in the last year of my studies. Finding support from my parents, I began my Seminary education and it is there where God called me to missions”.

a missionary and in August 2004 I left for Israel (the country where I was called to) but I went to Spain first, until I was able to complete the corresponding immigration process”. – God used you as a vehicle of blessing in the Seminary. In Spain as a professor you were in charge of many things and God took care of every detail in your trips to Israel. Was it easy?

– What country has He called you to? “God called me to Israel. In 2001 I was approved as

“At the Assemblies of God Seminary in Spain I was part of the faculty in the Theology Department. God blessed me to be a part of that department. It wasn’t easy; I went through several difficult moments. During this time I had to have an operation and received a prosthetic hip. This took a lot of time. God found a way to even use this event. On my first step through a metal detector the replacement caused the alarm to sound. Because of this, the authorities got to know me and from there on I was allowed to easily pass through. There were moments when many thought Israel was no longer an option but God allowed us, with great joy, to begin the extension of our faculty in Tel AvivIsrael(Feb 14, 2014, we signed the contract) The birth of this project took several (seven) trips focusing on volunteering, and missions and supporting several missionaries in Israel. It is there it became easy to verify the need to prepare and train the servants of God in biblical studies and theology (the majority were lacking professional ministry formation). We saw then how God was giving us direction to work in biblical studies and theology.

As I was leaving Spain for my first trip to Israel people were fleeing Israel because of the bombardments. Many told me not to go but even though the bombardment and shootings were on the news I never felt safer and I did not hear a single bomb while there.

Today we rejoice, but every step and stage, every trial and opportunity had its challenges but guided by God I was able to have peace and see how He always works through His perfect will.

â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The years have passed and God has been faithful. Looking back at what God has done what jumps out at you?

Seeing everything that God guides me and directs me to do produces a great sense of GRATITUDE AND JOY in my heart and at the same time FAITH in knowing that there is so much more that I have to do. I continue being OBEDIENT and sensitive to the voice of God so that we do everything He wants of us, even if many times I feel immense FEAR. He sustains me and HE goes before me opening doors. Aleluya!

I have learned to speak as little as possible and to do everything I can, what I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do our LORD and HELPER does it and it amazes and overwhelms me. LESS IS MORE FOR HIM

God showed me”... Nothing closes the door to good counsel more than this declaration.

“For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers...” Proverbs 11:14

As long as we live, we are obligated to make decisions. Some are more important than others, but each and every one has consequences. It is fundamentally important that we make good decisions. A good decision is the result of prayer, the word Of God, good advice, the analytical review of circumstances and the peace that comes when a decision is made. Someone’s advice should not decide our decision, unless the value we put on it is in accordance to the person who gave it. A wise and more experienced person will give us counsel that is more valuable. There is no counselor with so much experience that they would want to contradict God. What can a person say to someone who starts by saying “God showed me that…” - this person isn’t looking for counsel but rather seeking to bring peace to their conscious in regard to the decision they want to take. To this person a wise counsel will say “If the Lord showed you, do it.” That should be enough to make the conscious feels at peace. If someone asks “Are you sure you will do it?” They will answer “I spoke to John (a wise man) and he said to do it.” This is low and mediocre. It is vulgar manipulation, to use someone’s good reputation, just to do whatever one pleases without being questioned. “God showed me”... What can I tell you? If you are 100% sure, move forward. If not, it’s better not to take a single step. Seek counsel, listen and seek wisdom so that you can better make your decision and not just to calm your conscious and do as you please

We have to go on a missions trip this year!” It was a desire God put on my heart I could not ignore. After speaking with Missions Pastor Kimani Smith and Co-Pastor Debbie Howell about the need, they suggested the church do a free, local missions trip

with Special Touch Ministries*. I was surprised because I was not aware there was a need for missions to people with disabilities. This was definitely not in my comfort zone. This was an opportunity to get back in the mission field and I was not going to turn it down! “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” -Isaiah 6:8

s someone who had never spent much time around people with disabilities or special needs I was a bit nervous in the weeks leading up to the Florida Special Touch Getaway Missions Trip. I had many conversations with God asking Him to give me peace, patience, and kindness to be a caregiver to a complete stranger and show them His love. Strangely enough when we pulled into the camp I did not feel nervous or scared, I just felt calm. There was so much excitement once the guests started arriving! We were all gathered together and there were many activities for the guests to enjoy; arts & crafts, face painting, basketball, service dogs, etc. Everywhere you looked people were smiling and laughing and catching up with their friends from previous years. Each day at the Getaway we started with a community breakfast. This was a great time to fellowship with friends from other cabins with or meet new people. The food was always super delicious! After breakfast everyone attended morning chapel. The sermons were always applicable to the caregivers and campers. Between chapel and lunch campers participated in activities or had free time. Next on the schedule was dinner. Each evening the whole camp came together for the chapel service. The praise and worship time was amazing! Campers came to the altar and praised the Lord with all their hearts. They danced with abandon and lifted their hands in worship. While watching all of this I could not help but think that we could all learn a lot about how to worship God from such special people. The theme of this year’s camp is Fearless and each sermon addressed a fear and how God helps us overcome our fears. After the sermon they would always have an altar call and almost everyone would participate. At the Altar service campers were given

the opportunity to accept Christ as their savior or to rededicate their lives to Him. There was always time for campers to receive prayer for any need. Many requested prayer for emotional healing. I was privileged to be the caregiver for a very special lady. She is fully disabled and because of rough times in her past she suffered from extreme depression. Over the course of the week we had many opportunities to talk about our lives and about God. She told me how much of a difference Special Touch has made in her life. When she started going to the camp 7 years ago she was not a Christian. She was amazed to find out that everyone at the camp served as a volunteer and received no pay. She told me she had never been treated with so much kindness and love. This allowed them to share the Gospel with her and explain that the caretakers were only showing her Christ’s love. She followed Christ for a while but later she returned to her old life and twice she considered suicide. The good news is at camp this year she rededicated her life once more. In her words, “Special Touch is like my family.” My real family chooses not to accept me, but I have found a new family in Christ. I saw such a change in my guest in those few days I was with her. On Day 1 she was very dependent on me for everything, from feeding her to navigating her electric wheelchair and everything in between. By the last day she was able to feed herself, she was zipping along by herself, and even her physical appearance was improved and brighter. Guests and caretakers exclaim how their lives are changed by God through Special Touch Ministries. I had no idea what to expect from this missions and I had no idea how to minister to people with

disabilities. I realized it isn’t up to me because God is going to do all the work. As Pastor Joe Trementozzi, missionary and leader of the Florida Getaway, says, “The Holy Spirit will speak to their spirit.” My life was touched by my guest and the many other individuals I had the pleasure to meet and get to know. I learned a lot about people with Special Needs, about God and His love, and how to have a Servant’s Heart. Looking back on the week I know God was with me and helping me each day. My relationship with Him has grown so much from this experience. I am looking forward to serving with my team again at the upcoming Georgia Getaway and at next year’s Florida Getaway! There are 800 million disabled people in the world, 50 million in the United States. Many of these people have been abandoned by their family and most are now living in group homes with no access to a church or the Word of God. “PASSION FOR THE GOSPEL” IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LAMB… WE ARE ALWAYS SANCTIFIED AND VICTORIOUS. Because somebody went to them, lived with them, and gave them the greatest gift anyone can have: THE KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST, THE ETERNAL GOSPEL, and THE WAY TO SALVATION. NOW THEY ARE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LAMB. I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.” (1 Timothy 2:1-7 NIV) Let’s see how many times the word “all” is repeated: 1. PRAY FOR ALL PEOPLE 2. PRAY FOR ALL THOSE IN AUTHORITY 3. THE RESULT OF DOING THAT IS A “PEACEFUL AND QUIET LIFE IN ALL GODLINESS AND HOLLINESS”. Satan is the god of this world, and he manipulates the majority of governments. Adam’s sin gave the devil the authority of take over the world. And, quoting 2nd Corinthians 4:4, he has “blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ.” However, church can change this landscape, and taking this attitude pleases God. There is a war in heavenly places, but the church can make crowds of people kneel before Christ. All nations must fight against corruption. May the peace, piety and honesty come to those who govern us. 4. God wants “ALL people to be saved and to come to know the truth. For there is one God and one me-

diator between God and mankind, the man- Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.” 5. The purpose of having preachers, teachers, and apostles is “for this”: so ALL men can be saved. There are some theological currents saying that only a few chosen ones will be saved. But we, just like the apostle Paul, must preach the gospel, and the people hearing it must decide by themselves. These ministries must have the backup of the Holy Spirit, who is the one that brings conviction of sin. The miracles and wonders must be a central part on proving that the message is endorsed by God himself. For example, we have the testimony of Flor’s house owners, whose little girl was healed. Being Buddhists, they brought them a gift in gratitude. Without prayer and synchronization with the Holy Spirit, missions die. Another example is the story of the man following Hinduism that had a gun ready for the purpose of killing his wife, just because she didn’t take proper care of his mother. Pastor Mohan prayed for him for six months. One day Pastor Mohan decided to visit him, and he was very ill, in a diabetic coma. He prayed and the man was healed and saved with his family. Today they are part of the ministry. In the times we are living in, we must take the same serious resolutions as the church: 1. We must take this supreme responsibility. The Great Commission means to make disciples, build character on the ones we won for Christ, and send them to preach the Gospel. Church must be a place of training for going outside, and not a place of entertaining. This thought has transformed thousands of congregations that jump and dance around, but do not produce anything. The sad part is that they are convinced of doing something for the Kingdom of God. Pastor and leaders: don’t entertain your people, train them, and send them away. If you yourself are not going support those that are. Be part of the supreme responsibility and commandment. If you don’t make disciples, sooner or later the congregation will die. 2. We must act with urgency, there are a lot of doctrinal dangers diverting attention from the church:

• Prosperity Theology: “God wants you to have two cars, two houses, two women, etc.” • Gospel of “full grace”: this is an extremist thought, and it distorts the beautiful truth of Christ’s unconditional love, which does not mean debauchery. As Bonhoeffer said, this is “the cheap grace.” It is not cheap. It cost the Son of God His life in order for us to be washed and forgiven for our sins. These two wrong thoughts cause people to have a self-centred life, making it so different from the early Christians who were ready to sacrifice themselves to the extreme. Today thousands of people are dying for Christ. Because there is persecution and deprivation we cannot be thinking of our own well-being only. We have to be careful of our own hearts and not become greedy. For example, during Solomon’s time as a king, the temple had 16-30 sqm. But the king’s own house, which took thirteen years to build, had a hundred and thirty sqm. WE MUST TEACH THAT MISSIONS MEAN SUFFERING! AND THAT WE MUST PAY A HIGH PRICE IN ORDER FOR OTHER NATIONS TO BE SAVED. There is a congregation that took the challenge of reaching 100 ethnic groups in India in 5 years. There are nearly three thousand ethnic groups in that country, and about five hundred people pray daily for that goal. I have seen non Pentecostal Christians living in absolute poverty where people go at night time to get cleaned in the river with no clothes. They left first world commodities. These people don’t have Hollywood-style earnings. No, these, God’s servants, made themselves heard by living among those people, being just like them. 3. We must understand that this is the biggest need in the world today. The Gospel is the answer to humanity’s problems. Jesus said that the fields are ready. The hearts are ready to hear and to pay attention. Materialism doesn’t satisfy anybody. Fear, illness, death and sin all got resolved upon the cross. Idolatry, superstition, and related bonds still have millions of people living as slaves. They must hear about the freedom and the abundant life in Christ. Everyone must have the chance to hear that there is salvation and that our desire is to one day see them in the presence of the Lamb

CHILDREN AS EVANGELISTIC ALLIES IN CROSS-CULTURAL SETTINGS

hildren represent the most gospel-receptive unreached people group in any culture. All children, however, do not enjoy equal access to the gospel message because of cultural and social restrictions imposed by their particular life contexts. One way around these restrictions involves an intentional commitment to the spiritual nurturing of children that resonates with their inherited worldview.

ne example of successful evangelistic outreach to children and their families in a gospel-resistant cultural setting comes from the “Family Circus Children’s Ministry” of Darrell and Sandy Blatchley in Davao City, Philippines (see their web page: (www.familycircus.org). They colorfully present the Gospel to thousands of children each weekend in a large circus tent. Nearly 60% of the children in attendance are from Muslim families. The love and spiritual nurture the Blatchleys shower upon the children overcomes much of the usual resistance to the gospel message that is typical in a predominantly Muslim neighborhood. Another striking example of successful ministry to children in culturally hostile surroundings can be seen in the ministry of Lillian Trasher who has come to be known as the “Nile Mother” of the Assemblies of God orphanage in Assiout, Egypt. Against many odds Lillian managed to establish one of the largest and longest continuing institutional ministries of humanitarian aid in the history of the Assemblies of God world missions outreach. Preaching the Gospel to children as an evangelistic strategy in restricted areas is not a new tactic. The history of missions yields many examples of how missionaries experienced dramatic breakthroughs in pioneer projects by enlisting the help of children converts. For example, St. Francis Xavier, one of the 16th century founders of the Jesuit Missionary Movement first went to India where he attempted to reach the elite class of intellectuals. He believed that by reaching this strategic level of the population the Gospel would then filter down to all the members of that society. To his great frustration the elite class turned out to be very resistant to the gospel message in spite of the fact that Francis was widely admired for his ability to identify with the poor. He then went to Japan and began to experience the same frustrations. Finally, in desperation, he turned his efforts to evangelizing children. His ministry quickly began to grow exponentially. He baptized thousands of children in a short time. Many of these converted children began to evangelize their parents with great fervor. They berated their parents for their spiritual blindness and smashed the family idols in a display of profound devotion to Christ.

Francis fell ill and died of a fever before he could enjoy the fruits of his discovery that children were such effective allies in spreading the Gospel in hostile environments. Nevertheless, the outstanding results of his missionary work among children remains his legacy to this day. In the case of Francis Xavier, Lillian Trasher, and others throughout the history of missions it can be seen that the potential of children as catalysts for spreading the Gospel was stumbled upon by default – after traditional methods had failed to yield the desired results. How much greater could be the harvest of souls if servant-leader missionaries would deploy with the tactical intention of reaching children as the primary methodology of introducing the Gospel in resistant environments? It is my belief that Bible school students and especially missionary candidates should deepen their exposure to the Child Theology Movement (www.childtheology.org) in order to explore a new approach to sharing the Gospel in resistant settings. My experience in children’s evangelism in Argentina supports this premise even though Argentina is not considered a gospel-resistant culture. The principle of children as agents of transformation in the family and community can be applied globally. I have conducted many children’s outreaches with the ICE CREAM truck in Argentine barrios that had reputations for

violence and disfunctional social values. In spite of dire warnings that I was treading where angels did not dare to go the results have always turned out far more positive than anticipated. I believe part of the reason is related to the fact that children represent something for which adults nostalgically yearn. We need to take advantage of this social dynamic in our evangelism strategizing for introducing the Gospel in areas where it is resisted or even banned. The concept of the ICE CREAM truck was inspired by Bill Wilson’s ministry at Metro Assembly of God in Brooklyn: (www.metroworldchild.org). Bill began his Sunday school ministry to the children of the high crime neighborhood of Bushwick in 1979 against the advice of local Christian leaders who said such a project would be doomed to failure in that location. Today, to the great surprise of many, Metro Assembly boasts the world’s largest Sunday school ministry to children in the 250 year history of Sunday school since its founding by Robert Raikes in England. Metro ministers to over 100,000 children every weekend. Metro stands as an example of the potential of children’s ministry to facilitate the spread of the Gospel in difficult settings.

ería realmente una maravilla si los lugares a los que Dios nos llama a ministrar fueran cómodos, fáciles y de cosecha abundante. Pensando en el costo de ministrar en misiones, recuerdo que cuando era una adolescente, durante un servicio en la iglesia me senté en la parte delantera del templo, y desde allí vi sobre un caballete grandes fotos de niños. Quise saber de qué se trataba, entonces, los misioneros allí presentes comenzaron a compartir su historia: Habían trabajado en el campo misionero en Irán. Su tarea no era fácil pero sentían gran amor por el pueblo iraní. Ellos contaron acerca de esas personas que habían llegado a amar y de lo que les había significado el estar trabajando en ése lugar. El misionero y su esposa señalaron las fotografías y con los ojos llenos de lágrimas relataron acerca de un grave accidente que tuvieron en una estrecha carretera en uno sus viajes a las afueras. Todos los niños que aparecían en esa foto habían muerto allí, y lo que es peor, ellos fueron culpados por ese accidente aunque no tuvieron la culpa. Se pararon en el altar junto a las fotos y nos dijeron que habían enterrado a sus propios hijos en esa tierra lejana. Nos dijeron: “Plantamos preciosas semillas en ese suelo creyendo que habría una gran cosecha de almas en esa tierra”. Podemos hacer muchas preguntas… ¿Qué hubiera pasado “si” ellos no hubieran ido a ese país? ¿Qué hubiera pasado si hubieran ido a otra área?... Pero ellos fueron a ese lugar. Te puedo decir que en ese servicio me sentí con el corazón destrozado, y me preguntaba si yo estaría dispuesta a ir y a entregarlo todo aun sabiendo lo que pasaría más adelante. Al reflexionar sobre este caso en particular, puedo recordar que hay siervos fieles trabajando en lugares difíciles y peligrosos. Algunos han sacrificado mucho y hasta murieron en el desempeño de su ministerio. El llamado de Dios llega y nosotros contestamos a ese llamado. Sin ningún tipo de ataduras. Tanto si estamos en lugares seguros, o si el campo de trabajo es inseguro, difícil y duro, nuestro Padre nos pide que respondamos y seamos obedientes. Es que le servimos porque le amamos y somos obedientes a Su llamado, sin importar los riesgos.

odos creamos hábitos. Muchas veces da miedo pensar la forma en que nos atamos a cierta forma de vida. Sin embargo esto no es nada nuevo a la naturaleza humana, ya que todos hemos sido criaturas de hábito desde el comienzo de los tiempos. Esto incluye la iglesia primitiva que formó el hábito de propagar las buenas nuevas del Evangelio por medio de los judíos. Luego, gradualmente, alguien comenzó a colorear fuera de los límites. Primero, Felipe le predicó a los samaritanos, luego Pedro se aventuró a visitar la casa de un centurión romano con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo y allí compartió el mensaje de Jesús. Finalmente algo increíble sucedió cuando algunos valientes se aventuraron a compartir el Evangelio con los gentiles. La Iglesia de Jerusalén no fue una iglesia enviadora como resultado de una actividad misionera planificada. Por el contrario, miembros atrevidos de la iglesia decidieron actuar. La Iglesia se vio obligada a abandonar Jerusalén

debido a la persecución, pero ellos solo compartieron el Evangelio a sus coterráneos judíos. A continuación leemos estas admirables palabras en el libro de los Hechos 11:20-21 “Pero había entre ellos unos varones de Chipre y de Cirene, los cuales, cuando entraron en Antioquia, hablaron también a los griegos, anunciando el Evangelio del Señor Jesús. Y la mano del Señor estaba con ellos, y gran numero creyó y se convirtió al Señor”. Esta es la obra del Espíritu Santo. Estas personas no identificadas hicieron lo que nadie se atrevió hacer, compartir el Evangelio más allá de las regiones familiares con personas que eran diferentes a ellos. Esto es sin lugar a dudas uno de los mayores acontecimientos en la historia de la iglesia. La barrera se rompió y ahora el Evangelio es una misión mundial. El mensaje de Cristo pertenece a todas las personas en todas partes, independientemente si el gobierno permite o no la predicación del Evangelio.

Cuando Jesús dio el mandato de la Gran Comisión dijo: vayan a “todo” el mundo, no hizo excepciones para aquellos lugares donde encontramos una puerta cerrada. Doy gracias a Dios por estos primeros misioneros que verdaderamente entendieron que las buenas nuevas eran para toda la humanidad. Nuestro mundo hoy en día tiene muchas puertas cerradas al Evangelio, pero eso no significa que el corazón de los hombres está cerrado, ni tampoco quiere decir que el Espíritu Santo no intervendrá para que podamos compartir el mensaje en lugares prohibidos o restringidos. Al igual que el Espíritu Santo estaba con los evangelistas no identificados, causando así que muchos creyeran, hoy en día está haciendo exactamente lo mismo cuando nos atrevemos a llevar el mensaje a diferentes personas que se encuentran en lugares diferentes y difíciles. Tenemos que encontrar la forma de superar los obstáculos de geografía, idioma, cultura y política. Nuestro éxito en la superación de impedimentos llega cuando confiamos en el poder del Espíritu Santo. No existe una montaña demasiado alta, ni un idioma demasiado difícil, ni un régimen demasiado cerrado que Dios no pueda abrir para la declaración del Evangelio. A través de los siglos Dios lo ha hecho de la forma más increíble, y de la misma manera lo está haciendo ahora

PREDICAR EL EVANGELIO DONDE ES RESTRINGIDO O AÚN PROHIBIDO

lo largo de la historia, los cristianos en muchas naciones han sufrido restricción y/o persecución por predicar el evangelio. Inclusive en este tiempo sigue habiendo cristianos que entregan sus vidas por el solo hecho de seguir a Cristo.

En la ciudad donde vivimos en la actualidad hay restricción para predicar el evangelio, no podemos salir a las calles para proclamar el evangelio, y aún el golpear puertas para anunciar las Buenas Nuevas puede ser causante de prisión.

Conocimos a un joven que junto a sus amigos salen a las calles a predicar (este es un acto poco común para los cristianos en esta ciudad). A uno de ellos, en varias ocasiones lo han encarcelado por predicar el evangelio. Pero nada los detiene. Es una nueva generación de cristianos que, gracias a las lágrimas que sus antecesores derramaron, hoy quieren aprovechar el valioso legado de libertad que recibieron.

Por eso es que confiamos plenamente en que el Señor es quien hace la obra. Él es quien abre puertas. Un día una vecina le preguntó a mi esposo cual era nuestro trabajo, a lo que él le comentó que éramos misioneros, ¡nuestra sorpresa fue grande cuando ella misma nos dijo que quería asistir a nuestra iglesia! En otra oportunidad, la cajera de un supermercado nos demostró su inquietud por comenzar a congregarse.

Nosotros estamos colaborando como pastores en una iglesia y estamos animando a las personas a cumplir con la Gran Comisión: “Por tanto, vayan y hagan discípulos a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, enseñándoles a obedecer todo lo que les he mandado a ustedes. Y les aseguro que estaré con ustedes siempre, hasta el fin del mundo” (Mateo 28:19-20 NVI).

¡¡Dios nos abre puertas para compartir acerca de sus caminos!!

El Señor viene pronto y debemos predicar su Evangelio en tiempo y fuera de tiempo.

UNA MUY SUTIL PERSECUCIÓN: UN PROBLEMA ENTRE CULTURAY CRISTIANISMO INTRODUCCIÓN

l entonces cardenal Joseph Ratzinger, en la conferencia de obispos asiáticos dada en Hong Kong durante los días 2 al 5 de marzo de 1993, comenzaba su ponencia sobre Cristo, la Fe y el Desafío de las Culturas, de esta manera: “En sus últimas palabras, el Señor resucitado envía a sus apóstoles hasta el fin del mundo: Por tanto id y haced discípulos a todas las naciones; bautizándoles y enseñándoles que guarden todas las cosas que os he enseñado” (Mateo 28:19; Cf. Hechos 1, 8)1. Desde el mismo momento en que los apóstoles reciben la comisión de ir a ellos y no de esperar que vengan a ellos la contienda del evangelio con la cultura no ha cesado. En esta exposición me propongo presentar los hechos ocurridos en una ocasión específica dentro de las filas de la iglesia de los primeros cristianos y de cómo su cultura y su forma de asumir el evangelio como parte de la misma tensionó las relaciones interpersonales haciendo peligrar la calidad en la vida de aquel cuerpo en expansión. El texto lo leemos en Hechos 6:1-7 y trata primordialmente sobre la razón de la elección de los primeros diáconos.

LA SITUACIÓN

En aquellos días, como creciera el número de los discípulos1, hubo murmuración de los griegos contra los hebreos, de que las viudas de aquéllos eran desatendidas en la distribución diaria”. Hechos 6, 1. En este versículo se combina un contraste interesante. Por un lado se nos dice que como creciera el número de los discípulos…, lo que indica el desarrollo que nuestros hermanos experimentaban en aquellos días. Acto seguido la primera nota descriptiva de una situación hasta ahora ausente en Hechos hubo murmuración. Ya conocían el precio del engaño y la fatuidad cuando Ananías y Safira pagan con la vida el precio de su heredad (Hechos 5:16). El crecimiento siempre trae sus riesgos y donde más gente hay, más posibilidades de que existan tensiones. Pero lo particular de esta situación tiene que ver con un acto puntual. La murmuración: hubo murmuración de los griegos contra los hebreos. ¿La razón? …las viudas de aquéllos eran desatendidas en la distribución diaria. Wikenhauser piensa que al leer este pasaje se tiene la impresión de estar leyendo un resumen extremadamente conciso2. Sea esto así o no, tenemos los elementos necesarios como para sospechar el gran enfrentamiento entre culturas.

El segundo hecho que queremos notar es que hasta entonces la Iglesia está formada por dos grupos mayoritarios: griegos, provenientes de la Diáspora, con la cultura propia de sus lugares de origen y de habla predominantemente griega, ahora convertidos al cristianismo y, por otro lado judíos hebreos, nacidos en la “La tierra”, de lengua hebrea (o aramea), también convertidos al cristianismo. Y aunque ambos grupos de simiente judía parecen llevar un estigma: su enfrentamiento cultural.

ALGUNOS HECHOS PUNTUALES Murmuración. El primer hecho destacable para nuestro propósito se halla aquí mismo. El TDNT explica que el término γογγυσμòς, —gognysmós— en su uso no cristiano conllevaba el sentido de un reclamo legal y la instancia de que ninguna justicia o atención se había otorgado al mismo3. El término, más que una exposición abierta de queja lo que indica es un murmullo de disconformidad, algo que entre ellos mismos (los griegos) trataban. Es notable que este uso ¨no cristiano¨ de la acepción de reclamo no atendido sea el que aquí queda en relieve. El tercer hecho se corresponde con quienes están sufriendo desatención; las viudas griegas… Sin entrar en el terreno de la especulación pero, casi inevitablemente, nos preguntamos: ¿y por qué las viudas griegas? Sabemos por pasajes como Santiago 1:27 la estima en la que las viudas deben ser tenidas. Pablo tendrá mucho que decirle a Timoteo sobre este tema; Cf. 1 Timoteo 5:3, 5; 11; 14; 16. Virginia R. Azcuy utiliza un juego de palabras (que no es ningún juego…), harto elocuentes cuando habla de la iniquidad de la inequidad5. ¿Estaremos aquí frente al primer acto ¨cristiano¨ de inequidad? ¿Será que las viudas griegas sufren desatención por razón de la presencia de viudas hebreas? En cuarto lugar llama la atención el consejo apostólico del v. 3: Buscad, pues, hermanos, de entre vosotros a siete varones de buen testimonio, llenos del Espíritu Santo y de sabiduría, a quienes encarguemos de este trabajo. La solución aquí parece ser que los griegos atiendan a los suyos. ¿Tendríamos derecho aquí a pedir que los hebreos (quienes, evidentemente estaban a cargo de la distribución de alimentos), también se encargasen de los griegos? Desde este punto de la historia podríamos decir que sí. Otro detalle más: los requisitos a cumplir para servir las mesas siete varones de buen testimonio, llenos del Espíritu Santo y de sabiduría6. De ninguna manera deberíamos relativizar los requisitos morales y espirituales necesarios para servir al Señor. puesto de servicio tiene la misma nobleza si se lo hace para la gloria de Dios, 1 Corintios 10, 31 (Cf. Colosenses 3:17, 23). Y es también evidente que en Hechos se están sentando bases normativas para la ocupación de cargos eclesiásticos. Más, mirando algunos capítulos hacia atrás, cuando Pedro decide que Judas debe ser reemplazado, los requisitos para ocupar la silla vacante tienen más que ver con haber hecho-estado-visto que con aspectos éticos o de índole espiritual, completamente

ignorados, pasados por alto aquí; cf. Hechos 1:21-22. Por los nombres (y antes por el de entre ustedes…), sabemos que estos siete varones eran griegos7. Al fin, luego de haberlos instalado en el diaconado, el parágrafo concluye con una nota triunfal, v. 7: Y crecía la palabra del Señor, y el número de los discípulos se multiplicaba grandemente en Jerusalén; también muchos de los sacerdotes obedecían a la fe.

CONCLUSIONES Aunque hemos corrido el riesgo de salirnos del tema creímos oportuno dejar los aspectos de cristianismo y cultura para estas instancias. Luego de haber propuesto el problema tal cual lo entendemos pasamos ahora a dar algunas conclusiones: 1. La pugna entre la nueva humanidad que Cristo vino a crear, derribando los muros de separación entre las personas (cf. Gálatas 3:18), y la cultura propia de los recipientes primarios de la buena nueva, herederos de un fuerte sentido de exclusividad y participación en el proyecto redentor de Dios, fue una barrera que sólo por medio de la operación continua del Espíritu de Dios pudieron superar. 2. Es imposible no ver aquí la lucha de la cultura “bíblica” representada por los hebreos y la cultura ¨pagana¨ representada por los griegos. 3. A partir de aquí será tema común asociar la cultura hebrea con la cultura del reino y cualquier otra cultura como pagana. 4. Las crisis similares relatadas en Hechos 10 en torno a la posibilidad de que Cornelio y los suyos sean partícipes de las bendiciones del reino, y lo que leemos en Hechos 15 acerca del primer concilio de la Iglesia, nos muestran que esta materia la reprobaron una y otra vez. 5. A través de los siglos se ha repetido esta misma situación entre las culturas. Pensamos que Cristo no choca necesariamente con las culturas, con ninguna cultura, sino que las sobrepasa, “vuela por encima de ellas, de todas”, presentado como único ideal la cultura del reino, la cultura que él mismo vivió, enseñó y que guió todo el propósito que vino a cumplir. 6. Los elementos paganos de algunas culturas no son más escandalosos que los elementos culturales que el mundo “cristiano” ha canonizado. Es seguro que nuestro evangelio contiene un alto porcentaje de nuestra cultura. Vivimos la fe desde nuestra cultura. 7. Toda inequidad por razón cultural es iniquidad a los ojos de Dios. Si hay una cultura a la que debemos ajustar nuestros valores es a la cultura del reino y no al revés. 7. No sabemos nada sobre el origen de Nicolás (asumimos que fue griego), el prosélito de Antioquía.

– Hola Flor, cuéntanos de tu llamado. “Nací en hogar cristiano, mis padres son pastores, a pesar de eso en la universidad tuve una crisis pero gracias a Dios me guardó, y usó al grupo universitario para cuidarme. Empecé a servir en mi congregación y ver la labor de mis padres me llevó a responder al llamado que Dios venía haciendo a mi vida, que por muchos años y varias excusas trate de evadir, por eso puedo identificarme con el profeta Jeremías cuando le dijo a Dios: “Me sedujiste, oh Dios, y fui seducido: más fuerte fuiste que yo, y me venciste”; y respondí al llamado del Señor, el último año de mis estudios en la universidad, encontré apoyo en mis padres, y luego inicié mis estudios en el seminario y fue allí donde Dios me llamó a las misiones”.

Pero no fue fácil, pasé por momentos muy difíciles, la operación y prótesis de cadera tomó su tiempo, pero eso fue usado por Dios para que en mi primer viaje a Israel, al sonar el sensor de metal me conocieran e hicieran pasar con normalidad. Hubo momentos en que muchos pensaron que lo de Israel ya no sería, pero fue cuando Dios permitió que con gran gozo iniciáramos la extensión de nuestra Facultad en Tel Aviv (14 de Febrero 2014, firma del Convenio).

En uno de mis primeros viajes a Israel, yo salía de España cuando todos salían de Israel. Estaban en pleno bombardeo, muchos me decían que no fuera, pero a pesar que fue un tiempo de bombas y tiroteos según las noticias, fue el lugar donde más segura me sentí y no escuche ninguna bomba.

Pero, el inicio de este proyecto surge en el proceso de varios viajes (siete) de voluntariado y enfoque misionero, para apoyar a diferentes ministerios en Israel; desde allí, sería fácil verificar la necesidad de preparación y mejor capacitación bíblico-teológica de los siervos de Dios (en su mayoría, carentes de una formación ministerial específica reglada), que están al frente de las congregaciones. Sentimos desde entonces cómo el Señor nos encaminó a trabajar en la formación bíblica-teológica. Hoy nos alegramos, pero cada etapa, desafío y oportunidades tuvieron sus retos, y de la mano del Señor pude tener paz para enfrentarlos, y ver como siempre Él obra su perfecta voluntad”.

– Los años han pasado y Dios ha sido fiel. Al mirar atrás, ¿qué puedes resaltar de lo que Dios ha hecho? Al mirar atrás, todo lo que Dios me guió y dirigió a realizar, produce GRATITUD y GOZO en mi corazón, a la vez FE de que hay mucho más, y que tengo que seguir siendo OBEDIENTE y sensible a su voz, para realizar todo lo que Él me pida, aun cuando muchas veces siento un inmenso TEMOR. Pero lo que me sostiene, es saber que Él va delante abriendo puertas. Aleluya.

ME LO MOSTRÓ EL SEÑOR

“

Me lo mostró el Señor”. Nada cierra más las puertas a los buenos consejos que esta declaración.

“… mas en la multitud de consejeros hay seguridad” (Prov. 11:14).

Mientras vivamos, estamos obligados a tomar decisiones. Algunas más importantes que otras, pero todas necesarias, y cada una tiene sus consecuencias. Por lo que es fundamental tomar buenas decisiones. Una buena decisión es el resultado de la oración, la Palabra de Dios, los buenos consejos, analizar las circunstancias, y la paz interior al tomar una decisión. Si bien un consejo no debe determinar nuestra decisión, sí lo valoramos de acuerdo a quién fue el consejero. La persona que es más sabia o experimentada, da consejos más valiosos. Pero ningún consejero experimentado desea contradecir a Dios. ¿Qué se puede decir si el que busca consejo comienza expresando: “El Señor me mostró que…”? La realidad es que tal persona no busca un consejo, sino tranquilizar su conciencia por una decisión que desea tomar. Un consejero sabio sólo le dirá: “Si el Señor te lo mostró, hazlo”. Es suficiente. Solo con eso la conciencia está tranquila. Si alguien le pregunta: “¿Estás seguro de lo que harás?”, dirá: “Si, hablé con Juan (que es un hombre sabio) y me dijo que lo hiciera”. Esto es bajo y mediocre. Es una vulgar manipulación, usar la buena reputación de un consejero solamente para hacer lo que le plazca y que nadie le cuestione. “El Señor me lo mostró”... ¿Qué te puedo decir? Si estas 100 % seguro, dale para adelante. Pero sino… mejor no des ni un paso. Busca consejo para escuchar, para tener más sabiduría al decidir y no para calmar tu conciencia y hacer lo que te dé la Gana

UNA OPORTUNIDAD MISIONERA DIFERENTE

“

Tenemos que hacer un viaje misionero este año”. Este fue un anhelo que Dios puso en mi corazón y no podía pasar por alto. Después de hablar con el pastor de misiones Kimani Smith y la pastora Debbie Howell sobre este sentir, ellos me sugirieron

realizar un viaje misionero local con el grupo “Special Touch Ministry”* (Ministerio Toque Especial) libre de costos. Me sentí un poco sorprendida, ya que hasta el momento desconocía la necesidad de realizar misiones con personas con discapacidades, y esto definitivamente no era mi zona de confort. Era una oportunidad para volver a trabajar en el campo de las misiones y yo no iba a dejar pasar esta oportunidad. Luego escuche la voz del Señor que decía: “¿A quién enviaré? ¿Y quién irá por nosotros? Y yo dije: Heme aquí, envíame a mí” (Isaías 6:8).

iendo alguien que nunca había pasado mucho tiempo rodeada de personas con discapacidad o con necesidades especiales, me sentí un poco nerviosa durante las semanas previas a la actividad que llamamos “Florida Special Touch Getaway Mission Trip”. Oré a Dios y le pedí que me llenara de paz, paciencia y de la amabilidad necesaria para tratar a estas personas, que además de ser discapacitadas eran desconocidas para mí. Le pedí que derramara su amor en mí, para poder de igual manera transmitirlo a ellos. Para mi sorpresa, cuando llegue al campamento me sentí tranquila, llena de paz, no me sentí nerviosa ni asustada. Había mucha alegría a medida que los invitados iban llegando, y muchas actividades para que los participantes disfrutaran: artes y manualidades, pintura de rostro, juegos de baloncesto, perros guia, etc. Por todas partes se veían rostros sonrientes, llenos de alegría y reencontrándose con amigos de años anteriores. Cada día comenzábamos con un sabroso desayuno, ésta era una gran oportunidad para compartir con las personas alojadas en otras cabañas y para hacer nuevos amigos. ¡La comida era siempre deliciosa! Luego pasábamos a la capilla para un servicio. Los temas de predicación eran siempre aplicables a los misioneros allí presentes y a los invitados. Después del servicio y hasta la hora del almuerzo había diferentes actividades para los invitados que también podían optar por tiempo libre. Luego la hora del almuerzo. Luego se repetía el mismo programa de juegos, actividades, tiempo libre etc. hasta la hora de la cena. Terminábamos el día con un servicio vespertino en la capilla, allí la alabanza y la adoración llenaban el templo, bailaban, levantaban sus manos al cielo, había una entrega total. Al ver este despliegue de amor hacia nuestro Señor, pienso cuánto podemos aprender de estas personas. El tema de este año fue “Sin miedo”, así es que cada

sermón hacía referencia a un tipo de miedo y cómo Dios nos ayuda a superarlos. Después del sermón se realizaba un llamado y casi todos iban al altar, éste era el tiempo para que los que no habían recibido al Señor pudieran hacerlo y para reconciliarse aquellos que estaban apartados, también para pedir oración por alguna necesidad, muchos pedían oración por sanidad emocional. En este viaje misionero tuve la oportunidad de cuidar de una dama muy especial. Ella está completamente incapacitada y ha tenido muchos momentos difíciles en el pasado que la han convertido en una persona depresiva. En el transcurso de la semana tuvimos tiempo de hablar de nuestras vidas y de Dios. Ella me contó la gran diferencia que Special Touch habia hecho en su vida, no era cristiana cuando vino al campamento por primera vez hace 7 años, y se había asombrado al saber que las personas que cuidaban a los participantes eran todos voluntarios y nadie recibía paga, y ver que trataban a las personas con mucho amor y respeto. El motivo principal era compartir el Evangelio y mostrarles el amor de Cristo. Ella recibió al Señor como su Salvador el primer año que participó del campamento. Tristemente se apartó del Señor y cayó en completa oscuridad y trató de suicidarse dos veces, pero el Señor le salvó la vida. Este año, se reconcilió con el Señor en el campamento. Estas fueron sus palabras: “Special Touch es como mi familia, ya que mi familia no quiere saber de mí. Pero yo he encontrado una nueva familia en el Señor”. Yo la vi cambiar mucho en solo unos días que estuve con ella: el primer día ella dependía de mí para todo, desde darle la comida hasta llevarla en su silla de ruedas a todas partes. Pero hacia el último día, ella comía sola y podía moverse en su silla más rápido, y hasta su apariencia física era mejor, se veía muy bien.

Los invitados y los misioneros que allí trabajaron expresaron cómo sus vidas habían sido cambiadas por Dios a través de Special Touch Ministries. Yo no tenía idea qué esperar en este viaje misionero. No sabía cómo ministrar a personas con discapacidades, pero me di cuenta que no se trata de mí, sino que es Dios quien hace todo el trabajo. Como dice el Pastor Joe Trementozzi, misionero y líder de Florida Gateway: “El Espíritu Santo hablará a sus espíritus”. Mi vida fue tocada por la persona que yo cuidé y por las otras personas que tuve la oportunidad de conocer. Aprendí mucho de las personas con necesidades especiales, acerca de Dios y Su amor y de cómo tener un corazón de siervo. Mirando atrás veo que Dios estaba conmigo y me ayudaba cada día. Mi relación con Él ha crecido después de esta experiencia. Espero poder asistir con mi grupo de voluntarios a la próxima reunión, Georgia Getaway en el mes de agosto y el año que viene al Florida Gateway. Hay 800 millones de personas incapacitadas en el mundo y 50 millones en los Estados Unidos. Muchas de estas personas han sido abandonadas por su familia, viven en hogares de grupo y no tienen acceso a una iglesia o a la Palabra de Dios. Este grupo de gente menos favorecido tiene necesidad de Dios y de un ministerio como Special Touch que verdaderamente cambia vidas. Este ministerio está creciendo cada año y necesita más voluntarios para poder atender a más personas. heraldo y apóstol. Digo la verdad y no miento: Dios me hizo maestro de los gentiles para enseñarles la verdadera fe”. 1 Timoteo 2:1-7 NVI. Veremos las veces que se repite TODOS: 1. ORAR POR TODOS LOS HOMBRES. 2. ORAR POR TODAS LAS AUTORIDADES. 3. EL RESULTADO ES VIDA DE TRANQUILIDAD Y TODA PIEDAD Y HONESTIDAD. Satanás es el dios de este mundo y maneja la mayoría de los gobernantes de los pueblos. Adán le dio la autoridad al diablo para gobernar la tierra. Y como dice en 2 Corintios, él ciega el entendimiento de las naciones para que no resplandezca Cristo. No sabemos todos los misterios de cómo obran los demonios en el mundo, pero si estamos seguros que no quieren que la gente se acerque a Dios, y los desvía a millones de dioses (demonios). Sin embargo, la Iglesia puede transformar el clima y esta actitud agrada a Dios. Hay guerra en los lugares celestiales, pero la Iglesia hace arrodillarse delante de Cristo a pueblos enteros. Todas las naciones deben luchar contra

la corrupción. Venga la paz, piedad y honestidad desde las cabezas que nos gobiernan. Hay que orar para esto. 4. DIOS QUIERE QUE TODOS LOS HOMBRES SEAN SALVOS Y VENGAN AL CONOCIMIENTO DE LA VERDAD. PORQUE HAY UN SOLO DIOS Y UN SOLO MEDIADOR ENTRE DIOS Y LOS HOMBRES, JESUCRISTO HOMBRE, EL CUAL SE DIO A SÍ MISMO EN RESCATE POR TODOS DE LO CUAL SE DIO TESTIMONIO A SU DEBIDO TIEMPO. 5. Propósito de los ministerios de predicación, maestros, apóstol, “para esto”… para que todos sean salvos. Hay corrientes teológicas que dicen que sólo algunos elegidos serán salvos. Nosotros como San Pablo, debemos predicar, la gente debe oír, y decidir. Estos ministerios deben ir respaldados por el Espíritu Santo, quien es el que trae convicción de pecado, las maravillas deben ser parte natural de mostrar que el mensaje está respaldado por Dios. Ejemplo: Familia de los dueños de la casa de Flor, sanidad de la niña, ellos son budistas, le trajeron un regalo de gratitud. Sin oración en el Espíritu, Misiones se seca. Ejemplo: hinduista que tenía una pistola lista para matar a su esposa, porque no cuidó bien a su suegra. Pastor Mohan oró seis meses por él, un día lo visita y estaba muy mal, con coma diabético. Pastor, líder, no entretengas a tu gente, capacítala y envíala. SI NO VAS, ENVIA APOYA, SE PARTE DE LA SUPREMA RESPONSABILIDAD Y MANDAMIENTO. Si no se discipula, muere la congregación tarde o temprano. 2. Debemos actuar con suprema urgencia, hay muchos peligros doctrinales que están desviando la atención

El evangelio de la gracia completa… es el extremo y desvirtúa la hermosa verdad del amor incondicional de Cristo, que no es libertinaje, ¡al contrario! Como dijo Bonhoffer, “la gracia barata”. No es barata, porque costó la vida del Hijo de Dios para lavarnos y perdonarnos de nuestros pecados.

Estas dos corrientes hacen que el individuo se centre en sí mismo, tan diferente a los creyentes de los primeros tiempos de la Iglesia dispuestos al sacrificio extremo. Hoy hay miles que mueren por Cristo, hay persecución, despojos, no podemos estar solo pensando en el propio bienestar. Hay que tener mucho cuidado con el corazón y la codicia. Ejemplo: Salomón, la casa de Dios era 16 x 30 metros… Más o menos y su propia casa demoró 13 años en construirla de 130 metros. ¡HAY QUE ENSEÑAR QUE MISIONES ES SUFRIMIENTO! Y HAY QUE PAGAR UN ALTO PRECIO PARA QUE OTRAS NACIONES SEAN SALVAS. Su congregación se ha propuesto en cinco años alcanzar a 100 grupos no alcanzados de la India (hay cerca de 3000) y 500 personas oran diariamente por esta meta. He visto a grupos no pentecostales, que han venido a vivir en la más absoluta pobreza, entre gente que viven desnudas, ellos van de noche a bañarse al río, dejaron comodidades del primer mundo. Esa gente no se gana al estilo Hollywood, estos siervos de Dios se hacen OIR viviendo entre ellos, como ellos. 3. Debemos entender que ésta es la suprema necesidad para este mundo hoy. El evangelio es la respuesta a los problemas de la humanidad. Jesús dijo que la cosecha está lista, los corazones están para oír, escuchar; el materialismo no satisface, el miedo, las enfermedades, la muerte, el pecado se resuelve a los pies de la Cruz. La idolatría, supersticiones, ataduras han esclavizado a millones y millones de personas, deben escuchar todos que hay libertad y vida abundante.
