A word from the Boss

ROSS EMBLETON TRANMERE

“There were elements of our game that we needed to bring back and get better at. Getting control of the game was one of them. There were a number of moments in the match that reflected the conversations and work we had put in on the back of the Grimsby performance. I felt we looked very comfortable and were well worthy of the three points.”

STEVENAGE

“It is important to recognise the first half was one that nobody will be singing from the rooftops about. It was difficult playing conditions; the wind was constantly changing direction and was towards Lawrence in the first half. I’m glad the lads rolled up their sleeves and saw that first half through, despite not being under ridiculous amounts of pressure.

JOBI McANUFF

“He’s incredibly important. I’m really pleased for Jobi. I was at Orient when there were talks of re-signing him. I know his first experience of being at Leyton Orient wasn’t one that Jobi would have wanted or one he’d like to look back on - so I know how important it was for him to come here and really leave a mark. He’s a fine Captain for the club. Unbelievably thrilled for Jobi to reach that landmark. He continues to put in performances and lead the team on the pitch. I’m proud to have him, love working with him and the longer he can go on the better.”

I was pleased with that. There’s been plenty of times this season we’ve come in a goal behind but we were a lot more responsible and a lot more mature in the way that we set up. That gave us a platform to put in a very good second half and like Tranmere, I felt we were comfortable.”

EXETER CITY

“They had a very good season last year, they were unfortunate in the play-offs. We know they’re a team with very good players for the level and we expect them to be up there again this year. We have to be well prepared, we will be confident and ready to embrace what ever comes our way.”

the clean sheet. Jordan came on; I’m sure he was disappointed not to start but every time he has played he has made an impact on the game – whether that is starting or from the bench. I was pleased for him to come on and score.

“We went into the game knowing we needed to put in a performance and get a result, on the back of two disappointing games. It was very important to get back on track as quickly as we could and not get on a run of losing. That’s something we’ve come through. We will lose here and there, but we should never be on runs of three or four defeats.

For the rest of the team, the message from me is consistency. We have shown that we can be good at times, but it isn’t enough doing it for half hour. It has to be for 90 minutes and I feel in the last two games we have done that and that’s a big factor in getting the two results.”

I thought we played a complete 90 minutes. We imposed ourselves on the game in the first half and made sure that we went in at the break, at the very least at 0-0. Of course, you’d love to score and create chances, but you have to be realistic away from home. Second-half we came out and got the ball down and just looked a lot closer to what we aim to be. Good passing, playing in-between the lines and finding the forwards. It was a good win and as I say, a really good performance.”

EXETER CHALLENGE

“We go into it in a great frame of mind. That’s not getting carried away – it is just two good results. We want to talk about 20, 30, putting a whole season together. That’s something that Exeter have been doing; they’re a good footballing team that can mix it up and go long if they have to. I saw plenty of them at the back end of last season and fully expect them to be up there this year. It will be a tough test but we’re back home which we’re grateful for that after a couple of journeys on the road. We want to get more points and keep heading in the right direction.”

STEVENAGE

“It was similar in plenty of ways. There will be times when it won’t be the prettiest game and there’s been times in other games where we have conceded in spells like that. Perhaps we have got frustrated that it’s not exactly how we want it and it’s not perfect, but it’s League Two – it will never be 90 minutes of free-flowing football. You have to navigate those spells in games to be able to go and put your stamp on it.

150 LEYTON ORIENT APPEARANCES

“Let’s just say after my first spell, it wasn’t a milestone I thought I’d get anywhere near! I’m absolutely delighted to have come back and played the games, that always in my head, I intended to when I first joined. Having heard so many good things about the club, at that age, I wanted to come and play and establish myself. I’m really glad I’m here now and playing the games I had originally envisaged. I’m delighted, hopefully there is a fair few to go but it’s a nice milestone for sure.”

I felt we did that. We were comfortable. We didn’t quite click into top gear in the first 45 minutes and Loz has made some great saves to keep

ACADEMY

IN WHAT HAS BEEN A FAIRLY SLOW START TO THE 2020/21 CAMPAIGN FOR THE LEYTON ORIENT UNDER-18S, THE YOUNG O’S MANAGED TO RECORD A VALUABLE POINT AT THE WEEKEND AGAINST LEAGUE-LEADERS LUTON TOWN. Following a disappointing defeat to MK Dons last time out, the Orient youth side managed to dust themselves down and earn a respectable result on the road against a strong Luton Town side. Alex Lawless and Brian Saah’s team started the game with an air of confidence, by creating an array of chances early on within the fixture. After numerous attempts on goal, the away side eventually broke the deadlock 12 minutes into the tie. As he received the ball in a wide position, Daniel Nkrumah drove inside towards the heart of the Luton Town defence and unleashed a shot with his left foot. Nkrumah’s effort on goal struck a Luton Town defender, which wrong-footed the goalkeeper, and trickled into the back of the net. The O’s headed into the halftime break with a one-goal lead but the home side emerged for the second half with great confidence, which ultimately stunned our under-18s. Luton found their equaliser just six minutes into the second half, as the Hatters’ number nine managed to convert a

curling effort from just outside the area.

stabbed the ball past the Orient goalkeeper to level the scores at 2-2.

Just past the hour mark, the O’s re-established their lead as trialist Jaheim Whyte bagged his first goal for the under18s. Following the game, comanager Brian Saah noted how significant his close-range, poacher’s finish was to his development.

In the dying moments of the tie, Luton came close to finding a winner. An in-swinging cross from one of their wide men found an unmarked Luton attacker, in open space, who failed to convert from less than six yards.

“I think it was important for the striker Jaheim (Whyte) to get off the mark after the work he’s been doing in training and in previous matches.”

Reflecting on the result, Saah had this to say: “I think it was a better reaction and better performance than last week,” the co-manager stated.

Nevertheless, Orient’s lead only lasted a matter of minutes, as Luton quickly found an equaliser. Amongst some confusion in the penalty area, a Luton attacker instinctively

“It was disappointing not to win the game, but I think towards the end they had a few chances where they looked like they were going to score. So, I think 2-2 is a fair result.”

28

LOFC WOMEN MIXED FORTUNES FOR ORIENT WFC IN CUP DOUBLE HEADER The O’s got their campaign in two different cup competitions underway with differing results over the past fortnight. A 1-0 win over Dulwich Hamlet secured their place in the next round of the Vitality F.A Cup, while a shootout defeat to QPR saw them fall at the first hurdle in the Capital Cup. Katherine Long’s 7th minute strike was enough to secure Orient’s place in the Third Qualifying Round of the F.A Cup at the expense of a spirited Dulwich Hamlet side from the division below. In front of a substantial, socially distanced crowd of 582 at Champion Hill, Long made

it two from two at the start of her O’s career with an emphatic finish after Nyara Denny had flicked the ball into her path. The Orient defence performed their roles diligently throughout the second half, mostly restricting the Hamlet to long range efforts, and thus ensuring a clean sheet and safe progression to the next round where Chris Brayford’s side will meet Eastbourne Town. However, it was a different story for the O’s in their First Round Capital Cup tie with QPR as they crashed out of the competition on penalties. Denny had given Orient an early lead, however the Rs turned the score line on its head to lead 2-1 at half time, before winger Denny bagged her second to send the tie to penalties. O’s skipper Allison McCann was the only player to see her spot kick saved in a highquality shoot-out that ended 5-4 to the hosts.
