A word from the Boss

ROSS EMBLETON FOREST GREEN ROVERS

“It was disappointing because of the manner we gave up the goals. When you go to Forest Green you know they’re going to dominate the ball. They have a distinct way of playing and we totally respect that. We felt we could hurt them, when we looked back we created six chances that we should have scored from.”

NEWPORT COUNTY AFC

“It’s a great test for us. I have been really impressed by the way that they play. Flynn has really helped them evolve. They’ve got some great players. Michael Flynn creates a great work environment.”

JOBI McANUFF THE FA CUP

so they’ve shown us you can do it. From our point of view, it’s about going out and expressing ourselves, we gave a good account of ourselves against Forest Green – but we were disappointed to come away with a loss.

It provides us with a good chance to progress and have a decent little Cup run like we did in the Carabao Cup. We’re really looking forward to it.” `

Newport are a team we will face again in the league, so it is important we put in a good performance. We will see our levels and where we are at.”

We feel if we can keep those type of goals to a minimum, we feel we can get results against anyone. That’s what we will be looking to do against Newport.”

IMPROVING ON FOREST GREEN ROVERS DEFEAT

PLAYER & GOAL OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER

“The FA Cup is still a very special competition. I have good memories watching it growing up and some good moments playing in my career. It is a competition I look forward to and so does the club.

NEWPORT COUNTY AFC

“They’ve had a fantastic start. Big credit to Michael Flynn. For us, they are where we want to get to. They’ve had a big transformation

“The nature of the goals we conceded; two set pieces. Earlier in the season we spoke about the soft goals we were conceding, where

teams didn’t have to work hard to score. It was the same the other night, don’t get me wrong, they’re a decent team – but to come off the pitch having lost to those types of goals is disappointing.

“A really good month. It was great just being back on the pitch first and foremost. The free-kick and being voted player of the month is still a massive bonus and is something I really enjoy. There were some fantastic performances and goals last month, as with the month before, so I think a few lads were unfortunate to miss out. That shows the quality we have, when you could have realistically picked a handful of players. That shows our form. We hope that remains the same. It’ll take something to retain goal of the month – there’s been some crackers. I’d take a couple of scrappy goals too and let someone else take the spectacular, no problems at all!”

THE FA CUP

“It’s going to be a tough game but it’s Cup football, so you never know what to expect. They’re flying high, I think we can do really well and progress to the next round.”

THE LEAGUE

“The Covid setback of course put us back a bit. The boys have done brilliantly to come back and get three wins, three clean sheets in four games. We’re in a good place. We gave a good account of ourself against Forest Green. They’ll be up there. We’re in a good place and we’re enjoying all the games.”

RECENT PERSONAL FORM – EFL TEAM OF THE WEEK

“It’s always good to get recognition for your performances but at the end of the day, my job is to help Leyton Orient be as good as Leyton Orient can be. I never really like to celebrate individual achievements. Football is a team game. To get a clean sheet I have to rely on my defenders to put in a big shift.”

16

GET TO KNOW LAWRENCE VIGOUROUX Who do you support? Chelsea Favourite Chelsea player? Eden Hazard What do you think of Chelsea’s chances this year? I think there will be silverware this year. They have a shot of winning the league. Which goalkeeper do you model your game on? Ederson. He’s so good with the ball at his feet. His distribution is superb. I take parts of his game and try and put it into mine. If you could play in any team in history, past or present, who would you play for? Barcelona 10/11. For me, they are the best team ever. The best player you’ve faced? In training, Arturo Vidal and in a game, Juan Fernando Quintero. He’s a baller. I played him at u20’s. If you weren’t a footballer what career path would you pursue? I’d most likely work with my Dad, fitting kitchens. In your free time, what do you like to get up to? I’m a father of two. I love spending time with my children, going to the park and playing games with them. Now we’re in our second lock down, do you have any TV shows you’d recommend people watch? The Mrs and I have been watching Money Heist and Queen of the South. I’d recommended them. Finally, three songs to add to our Spotify playlist? Lockdown - Koffee Snitching – Pop Smoke ft. MEMORIES 2-0 DOWN, 3-2 UP – ORIENT BEAT CHELSEA IN THE CUP!

Leyton Orient 3-2 Chelsea - February 26, 1972 The O’s welcomed two-time FA Cup winners, Chelsea, to Brisbane Road in 1972.The Blues boasted players such as Peter Osgood, David Webb and Ron Harris. The former, Osgood, scored to make it 2-0 to the Blues and to dent any dreams of a cup upset. But the O’s fought back, Phil Hoadley lashing home from 25-yards to make it 2-1 just before half-time. Mickey Bullock equalised to spark a mini pitch-invasion. Barrie Fairbrother was in the right place at the right time, late on to spark a famous victory for the O’s.

MARCHING TO THE SEMI-FINALS AFTER BETTERING MIDDLESBROUGH

Leyton Orient 2-1 Middlesbrough - March 14, 1978 The Quarter-Final of the 1978/79 FA Cup campaign saw the O’s face high-flying Division One Middlesbrough for a place in the Semi-Final. Once again, a solid defensive performance secured a home replay, in front of a bumper crowd, the O’s got off to a flyer, scoring two goals in the opening 12 minutes Peter Kitchen and Joe Mayo getting the goals. The O’s went robust in defence and while David Armstrong pulled a goal back, they held on for the remaining minutes of the game to secure a semi-final clash against London rivals, Arsenal.

18

GARNER PENALTY SAVE DENIES THE COTTAGERS

Fulham 1-2 Leyton Orient – January 8th, 2006

The O’s, then in League Two, travelled to Craven Cottage to take on Premier League Fulham in 2006. The O’s took the lead through Craig Easton in the 17th minute, his deflected shot looping into the top corner. Joe Keith scored a second just before half-time, his shot bobbling over the Fulham ‘keeper and into the net. Collins John pulled a goal back just five minutes into the second half, and when Luis Boa-Morte won a penalty it looked like they’d completed a comeback. However, Glyn Garner dived to his left and pushed the penalty away to secure a memorable victory.

AND IT’S TEHOUE… IT’S A GOAL!

Orient 1-1 Arsenal – February 20th, 2011 One of the great games at Brisbane Road in recent history. Russell Slade’s Leyton Orient forced a trip to The Emirates thanks to Jonathan Tehoue’s late strike. The Premier League giants had controlled the tie and took the lead through Tomáš Rosický, but the E10 crowd were sparked into ecstasy when Tehoue beat Almunia after dancing through two Arsenal defenders.

Peter’s contribution to the club’s FA Cup semi-final run, including the famous win at Chelsea was an astounding one. He scored

Thank you for supporting Barts Charity Leyton Orient Football Club and its incredible fans have shown amazing generosity, helping us through the worst of COVID-19 and making for a safer and healthier East London community in the midst of a global pandemic. You’ve truly been there for our NHS staff and patients when they’ve needed it most. We’re particularly humbled to be receiving donations from the new home kit this season, generously sponsored by former player Harry Kane. As the dedicated charity for the five Barts Health NHS hospitals – including Whipps Cross – we fund innovations in patient care, pioneering medical research and vital support for doctors and nurses. This year, our NHS workers have gone to extraordinary lengths to care for our community. THE ORIENT UNDER-18S SUFFERED A BLOW IN THEIR MOST RECENT EFL YOUTH ALLIANCE TIE, AS THEY LOST 5-2 TO STEVENAGE ON A WET AND WINDY MORNING AT THE WHITBREAD PLAYING FIELDS. The O’s unfortunately fell to defeat at the hands of Stevenage in their most recent league fixture. Despite the Orient youngsters being down 3-1 at the interval, Alex Lawless and Brian Saah’s side managed to pull one back just past the hour mark which brought some hope to the side. Nevertheless, in the later stages of the second half, the young Boro continued in a similar attacking vein to that of their first-half performance. With one eye on the FA Youth Cup, which was due to be played on the 2nd November, Saah admitted that he made a number of changes ahead of the league tie.

the O’s conceded again as a teasing ball into the box was turned in by an Orient defender.

“We had quite a younger squad,” Saah told @LOFCAcademy. “We had a few under-16s starting but overall this wasn’t the result that we wanted.” It only took nine minutes for the tie to spring into life, as Stevenage drew first blood. An accurate cross-field pass fell to the unmarked Stevenage winger Yasin Arai, who took a touch closer to goal before dispatching his effort past the Orient goalkeeper. It wasn’t long before Stevenage doubled their lead, as Boro’s number 7 Jake Bunyan converted from distance and past Orient’s man between the sticks. Finlay Lovatt, who recently returned from his ankle injury, managed to pull one back for the O’s in the 24th minute. The 18-year-old rounded the goalkeeper and converted Orient’s first to provide the O’s with a fighting chance. Prior to the half-time whistle, Stevenage found their third. After multiple waves of Boro attacks,

Coming out for the second half, and with a point to prove, the O’s started brightly and even found their second of the morning just past the hour mark. Following a corner, the ball bobbles amongst a crowd of players, with it later being instinctively stabbed home by SahidNallo. However, this glimmer of hope lasted just ten minutes, as Stevenage found their fourth. An attacker from the away side made a driving run down the left-hand flank and later laid the ball to a striker that was just shy of the penalty area, who converted into the roof of the net. Stevenage completed their ruthless rout, with an impeccable finish in the 89th minute. Following an impressive solo run by Archie Tamplin, the young winger converted via the underside of the crossbar and guaranteed a 5-2 victory for Stevenage. Despite the side being filled with predominantly first-year scholars, the Orient under-18s will look to dust themselves ahead of their next EFL tie against Cambridge United.

LOFC WOMEN LOCKDOWN SUSPENDS SEASON FOR LOWFC

In line with the government’s imposed national lockdown, The FA has announced that all “nonelite” football activity is to be suspended until December 2. In the women’s game, this means that the Women’s Super League and the Championship will continue but not the next level down, the FA Women’s National League. Unfortunately, with the WNL defined as “non-elite”, this has put Orient WFC’s season on hold for the time being. Speaking about the announcement, O’s boss Chris Brayford emphasised that the health and wellbeing of everybody involved in the game must come first. “We are obviously disappointed about the shutdown but we support the measures in the collective best interest. Clearly the key priority is that the restrictions have the desired effect and the rate of infection goes down.” Brayford also highlighted some of the work he and the team will be doing over the coming weeks while matches and training are off-limits.

“We will be trying to keep up a regular schedule in lockdown and focus on what we can do e.g. video match analysis for example. Tag, David and Petya, who have done a great job on the team’s strength and conditioning, will be running sessions for the players online plus we will have a home fitness programme for them also. Despite the enforced break, the Orient manager has no doubt that the team spirit fostered within the group will remain high throughout the next month. “In the last lockdown, the players showed how creative they are with some great ideas for the weekly zoom calls: in addition to the quizzes and suchlike, there were things like having to recreate and photograph a scene from a film and identify it, as well as a version of Through the Keyhole where they were guessing who lives where. So we’ll still be doing stuff even if we can’t get out on the pitch to train or play for these next few weeks!” Make sure to follow @OrientWFC for all the latest updates surrounding the club, including some exciting announcements. Orient’s next fixture is expected to be the re-arranged Vitality FA Cup tie versus Eastbourne Town on Sunday, December 6.
