A word from the Boss

ROSS EMBLETON SCUNTHORPE DEFEAT, BUT WE HAD OUR CHANCES…

“We started the game really well. I’m disappointed we didn’t build and kick on. We missed a penalty and a number of other chances, but I felt we should have been up and out of sight before going 1-0 down.”

BRISTOL ROVERS: REVENGE AND GETTING BACK ON FORM…

“I thought we were unfortunate to lose last year, I felt we were the better team on the night and deserved to go through. We will be looking for a similar performance. It’s nice that we don’t have to travel, and it provides an opportunity to put the wrongs, right, from the weekend.”

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PLAYERS…

“It’s a perfect of opportunity for the squad as individuals and for us to bounce back into form. They’ll be a number of players that get their opportunity tonight, but they’ll also be players from the weekend, who will be looking to improve on their performance. Football is upside down at the minute, and that doesn’t give us many opportunities to give players game time. We’re playing so much football but at the same time, we don’t have reserve games. We don’t look at this fixture as a reserve game, but it is an opportunity for people to play. We’ll be looking for people to take that, whatever their motivation is.”

NEWPORT ON THE HORIZON…

“It’s going to be tough; we’ve already played them in the FA Cup. I didn’t think they were superior against us, but we made some disappointing mistakes on the day. We know what we have to do to improve. We know we need to improve our results against teams at the top of the table and that’s what we will be looking to do.”

Captain’s column

JOBI McANUFF DEFEAT TO SCUNTHORPE UNITED

“Disappointing, particularly after the run that we’ve been on. We wanted to keep that streak going and keep momentum. We started well and created opportunities that we should have scored. From our point of view, we’ve conceded a couple of poor goals. We’re disappointed that we didn’t go on and put in a performance that would merit a victory.”

SQUAD DEPTH; PLAYERS RETURNING FROM INJURY

“I’ve spoken a lot about the strength of our squad. You only have to look at the lads who weren’t involved against Scunthorpe and the ones who were on the bench. I think over the course of the season that will stand us in good stead. It bumps up the competition for places and brings out the best in players.”

BRISTOL ROVERS

“It’s great having midweek games. It’s tough physically, if you look at the schedule, we had earlier in the season but the best thing about it is you don’t have time to dwell on it. We have a big game to look forward to. I’m sure people will be out to stake a place in the team. People will get opportunities and it’s another game we have to go and get back to winning. It’s the same group, regardless of who plays.”

JOSH WRIGHT +++++ OUR START TO THE SEASON

“We’re in a healthy position in the league and I think there’s still room to improve on that. I think there’s a fantastic opportunity for a club like ours to have a real good go. We have to continue to work hard and strive for more.”

BRISTOL ROVERS, A REPEAT OF LAST YEAR’S FIXTURE

“We put in a very good performance last years and deserved more from the game. We have to use that to spur us on. We want to get through to the next round.”

BIG GAME AT THE WEEKEND AGAINST NEWPORT

“We know what they’re about, we’ve had a taste of them in the FA Cup. We want to get ourselves on track to go out there and get a big result on Saturday.”

THE RETURN OF FANS

After 275 days, The Breyer Group Stadium finally welcomes fans back into the ground. We ask all supporters to follow the safety procedures put into place and enjoy tonight’s match.

THE REFEREE

REFEREE: Alan Young ASSISTANT REFEREES: Darren Blunden and Michael Chard FOURTH OFFICIAL: Stephen Brown Young has officiated 14 games so far this season, booking 52 players, sending off one and awarding one penalty. The referee last officiated an O’s game back in January, when Orient welcomed Northampton Town to The Breyer Group Stadium. It was a busy day for the official, who awarded the O’s a spot-kick and sent off James Dayton and Scott Wharton moments before the full-time whistle. Should tonight’s game finish level, a penalty shootout will decide the winner and ultimately, who progresses to the next stage of the competition.

THIS IS WHY WE KNEEL

AHEAD OF OUR GAME WITH BRISTOL ROVERS, IN WHICH SUPPORTERS WILL MAKE THEIR LONG-AWAITED RETURN, THE CLUB IS AWARE OF THE ONGOING DEBATE SURROUNDING THE PRE-MATCH RITUAL TO TAKE THE KNEE. Recent events at Millwall saw widespread coverage and condemnation as selected supports booed during this ritual – with the Lions issuing a statement to convey that they were “dismayed and saddened by events”. Chairman Nigel Travis yesterday issued his own statement, part of which referred to the club’s strong stance that “anyone making discriminatory noises or other discriminatory actions will be removed from the ground and banned for life.” Questions have been directed to the club, including whether taking the knee is supporting the political organisation Black Live Matters, and their ideologies. The club would like to make it clear that this is not an endorsement of any political party or views, and is instead intended as a show of unity against racial discrimination of all kinds. Leyton Orient is proud of our diverse history, and indeed our diverse present, and discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated – and that is why we kneel. When our players and staff kneel tomorrow night, we hope that our supporters recognise this, and continue to play their part at the centre of our community club.

28

REPORT: @1TOMKELLY

AFTER PLAYING PETERBOROUGH UNITED FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A MATTER OF FIVE DAYS, THE O’S SUFFERED A DISAPPOINTING 6-0 DEFEAT TO THE POSH AND LEFT CAMBRIDGESHIRE EMPTY-HANDED. Prior to this fixture, the O’s took on Peterborough on Tuesday afternoon, with this game ending 5-0 in favour of the Posh. Brian Saah’s side returned to Cambridgeshire days later but, on this occasion, Peterborough rode out victorious once again. Following the loss, Saah said: “It’s a tough one to take, considering we played them on the Tuesday. The boys today just weren’t good enough. We gave the ball away far too many times in bad areas but, to be fair, they’re a good side and they punished us today.”

create a few chances. However, Peterborough rediscovered their scoring touch in the 67th minute, as the O’s conceded a penalty.

The home side grabbed a hold of the game after just five minutes, as a through ball from a deeplying Peterborough midfielder found a Posh attacker, who opened the scoring.

With a slow run-up, the Peterborough midfielder slotted the ball to the right-hand side and provided the Posh with their fourth goal of the morning.

With eleven minutes gone, Peterborough struck again. The Posh full-back surpassed an Orient defender out wide and drove towards the by-line, to later cross the ball to an attacker in the sixyard box, who converted. This quick start from the home side stunned the O’s during the opening periods of the game. Nevertheless, the under-18s looked to carve out a number of opportunities, but nothing threatened the Peterborough goal.

Ten minutes later, the Posh recorded their fifth. Against the run of play, Peterborough managed to clear their lines and the Posh winger latched onto the clearance. After dribbling down the right wing with speed, the Posh midfielder delivered a ball into the box that found an unmarked Peterborough attacker, who converted. In the 81st minute, Peterborough completed the scoreline, as a Posh striker managed to convert a curling effort from outside the area.

To further extend their lead, the Posh found their third just prior to the half-hour mark. Peterborough had a number of successive chances on goal and the O’s did their best to clear the danger, however, a Posh attacker eventually found their way through the sea of Orient defenders to convert.

“Defensively, we have to be a lot better,” Saah admitted following the game. “We just need a bit more desire to stop the ball from going into the back of the net and, more importantly, I think we just need to get a bit of respectability back to the scoreline.”

The half-time whistle echoed around Nene Park, as the O’s entered the interval trailing by three goals. As the two sides emerged for the second half, the O’s looked to maintain possession and

After back-to-back defeats on the road, the Orient under-18s will look to dust themselves down ahead of their trip to MK Dons next Saturday.

LOFC WOMEN ORIENT WFC MADE THEIR RETURN TO ACTION THIS WEEKEND AS THEY SECURED THEIR PLACE IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE VITALITY FA CUP WITH A 4-1 WIN AWAY AT EASTBOURNE TOWN.

REPORT: @BRENDANPITCHER

Hayley Barton bagged the opener just ten minutes into the tie, after some neat interplay between Claudia Zahui and Nyara Denny left the O’s winger with an easy finish. Kate Bradley doubled Orient’s lead mid-way through the first half, before the hosts pulled one back from the spot. Chris Brayford’s side were then awarded a penalty of their own just before the interval which Allison McCann duly converted, and the scoring was finished off by EgleTrezzi in the 77th minute. Speaking after the game, captain McCann reflected on a job well done especially given her side’s long stretch without a fixture. “It was so fun to be back. It was an excellent game, I thought everybody played really well considering we had been away for a whole month.” The O’s will take on Actonians at home in the First Round Proper in a tie that will take place this Sunday December 13th.
