A word from the Boss
ROSS EMBLETON SOUTHEND “I know there’s a big rivalry between the two teams, but they’ve certainly turned things around in recent weeks. The league is full of teams that can beat each other. We have our own focuses, and we will want to do better than recent performances.”
ISOLATION “Isolation is frustrating for anybody. I spent time on the phone to analyst Joe Austin and I called Martin regards substitutions, who passed it down to the dugout. For me, it was horrible not to have communication with the players and limited communication with staff.”
TRANSFER WINDOW “The sooner we can get our work done, the better. The group needs freshening up, it needs some new faces and energy. It’s time for a fresh approach and some new faces. The outgoings are important. If you look at the future of football; you have to give people who are not playing the opportunity to go and do that.”
“THE LEAGUE IS FULL OF TEAMS THAT CAN BEAT EACH OTHER. WE HAVE OUR OWN FOCUSES, AND WE WILL WANT TO DO BETTER THAN RECENT PERFORMANCES”

Captain’s column
JOBI McANUFF THREE STRAIGHT DEFEATS
“It’s becoming a recurring theme. Not just losing, but the manner in which we have. We certainly feel we should have won those games. It’s a real mix of frustration and disappointment but it’s important not to go too overboard. We’re as disappointed as anybody, but at the same time we feel a couple of slight adjustments and being better in certain spells of the game – we can go and get results.”
PUTTING IT RIGHT AGAINST SOUTHEND
“They’re in form. They seem to have got themselves together. For us, it’s a big game. One that we know the fans would look out for. It’s one we know means a lot to people at the football club at the best of times, but certainly following our last few games. We know we have to be bang at it and stop the rot. It’s frustrating that things that we have all said throughout the season are costing us. Ultimately, it’s consistency that is letting us down. We want to put in a performance that warrants three points.”
NEW YEAR
“It’s been a tough year for everybody, not just in football. From our point of view it’s about finishing the year off in the best way possible. I don’t think it would be unordinary to say we’re glad to see the back of this year and we look forward to a better 2021.
“ULTIMATELY, IT’S CONSISTENCY THAT IS LETTING US DOWN. WE WANT TO PUT IN A PERFORMANCE THAT WARRANTS THREE POINTS”
That being said, we still have the opportunity to put ourselves in a decent position heading into the New Year. I think that would help us look ahead more positively and sign off 2020 a bit more upbeat.”

JOE WIDDOWSON
RECENT FORM
“We’ve had three disappointing results where we have lost by one goal every time. We’re upset with the goals we have conceded. There is work to be done. I don’t think we have been dominated; it’s been fine margins. We don’t concede many opportunities in games but we’re conceding too many goals. We need to be more resilient and increase our concentration levels.”
A NEW YEAR TO KICK-ON…
“We want to try and sign the year off with a good result and a good performance, particularly because we’re at home. We’ve had runs like this, this season. We know we have to put it right. That’s the focus. That is our aim.”
SOUTHEND UNITED
“They’re in form. It will be a tough game, but we will be confident. It’s a chance to stop this run of results and pick up a muchneeded victory.”

REMEMBERING OUR LOVED ONES LOST IN 2020…
Hicks has taken charge of 17 games so far this season, four of those in League Two. In those matches, the official has booked 45 players, sent off two and awarded seven penalties. The last time the referee was involved in a Leyton Orient game was as recent as September – when the O’s beat Forest Green Rovers in the Carabao Cup.
As part of the Club’s annual ‘In Memory’ feature, fans have until 5pm on Thursday (31 December) to provide the names of fellow Orient supporters, friends or family who passed away in 2020. All names submitted to d.walker@leytonorient.net by 31 December will be included in our digital match pack for Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two game, against Salford City. Names will also be read over the tannoy, ahead of kick-off.

Remarking on her side’s progression in the tournament, O’s forward Scarlett Smith emphasised how much the cup means to her and the club as a whole. “It might be my last season playing in the FA Cup and it’s still so magical. I think in women’s football especially it means a lot to us so to get as far as possible is definitely our aim.”

Thank you for supporting Barts Charity Leyton Orient Football Club and its incredible fans have shown amazing generosity, helping us through the worst of COVID-19 and making for a safer and healthier East London community in the midst of a global pandemic. You’ve truly been there for our NHS staff and patients when they’ve needed it most. We’re particularly humbled to be receiving donations from the new home kit this season, generously sponsored by former player Harry Kane. As the dedicated charity for the five Barts Health NHS hospitals – including Whipps Cross – we fund innovations in patient care, pioneering medical research and vital support for doctors and nurses. This year, our NHS workers have gone to extraordinary lengths to care for our community. And that’s why we made £500,000 rapid COVID-19 funding available during the initial peak and have since given £3m for long term programmes focused on staff wellbeing and mental health. To find out more about how donations make a difference, please visit bartscharity.org.uk, drop us a line at hello@bartscharity.org.uk or call us on 020 7618 1717
