A word from the Boss

ROSS EMBLETON SOUTHEND

“It was important that we got back to winning ways. It doesn’t matter who it was against. Results haven’t been good enough. We wanted to win a game of football. When you play Southend, it’s important to win. I was pleased we got a clear message across to the players about how important the game was to staff and fans.”

2020

“There’s been a lot of progress made. There are areas we need to improve but that will always be the case. On the whole we have taken strides forward and we end the year in a good place – I think we could be in a better one but there’s a lot more to look forward to as we go into 2021.”

SALFORD

“Richie Wellens is trying to hammer home his ideas to make them a better team. We all know what Salford are about, we know what they have at their disposal; we’re looking forward to the test. They’re a really good team with some very good individuals.”

“ON THE WHOLE WE HAVE TAKEN STRIDES FORWARD AND WE END THE YEAR IN A GOOD PLACE”

Captain’s column

JOBI McANUFF “I THOUGHT IT WAS A REAL COMPLETE PERFORMANCE FROM EVERYBODY. IF WE CAN DO THAT OVER 90 MINUTES, WE WILL WIN MORE THAN WE WILL LOSE” SOUTHEND UNITED

“It was a good result. What pleased me most was the performance from start to finish. We’ve shown good quality, hurt teams but not sustained it for long periods. We’ve shown we can be a match for any team. The big thing for me, is being able to do that over 90 minutes. I thought it was a real complete performance from everybody. If we can do that over 90 minutes, we will win more than we will lose.”

SALFORD CITY

“It is going to be a different game. They’ll come to win the game. Southend wanted to stop us doing what we like to do. Richie Wellens’ Swindon team last year was one of the best we played against. He’s gone there and he will try and implement the same style. We have to be aware. It should be a good game. We fancy ourselves, if we’re at it. It will be a good test, a marker, to see if we’re going to hit our targets this season.”

A NEW YEAR

“It’s always nice to be on the scoresheet and see a free-kick go in. Primarily, my job is to try and create and give the boys opportunities. It was nice to set up Conor and it was a really, really smart finish from him.

A GOAL AND AN ASSIST

“For us this year, it was about putting ourselves in a position to go and do something in the second-half of the season. We’ve done that and that’s on the back of some disappointing results too. I think that’s why it was important to get that win against Southend.

He’s another one who has so much potential and ability. No one should be surprised by how well he is doing. I think he can go on to do more and score more goals. I’m pushing him. I think if he applies him self like he has this year, you’ll get a return from him. He’s a top player.”

It was a boost going into the New Year, it gives us some momentum and a platform to build on. We can’t shy away from our targets. We have to be serious about making the play-offs. We have a chance. Now it’s about doing even better than we have in the firsthalf of the season.”

@1TOMKELLY

THANKS TO BEN STAERCK’S 86TH-MINUTE EQUALISER, THE O’S MANAGED TO SALVAGE A POINT AGAINST STEVENAGE WITH A 2-2 DRAW IN THEIR LAST GAME BEFORE THE CHRISTMAS BREAK. After a disappointing first half, where the O’s conceded in the 26th and 42nd minute, Brian Saah’s side accurately portrayed their fighting character in the second half, as they converted twice to level the scores. As the referee blew his whistle to signify the start of this wet and windy fixture in Stevenage, both teams looked keen to score early on. Orient’s man between the sticks, Rhys Byrne, demonstrated his class after 22 minutes, which temporarily denied Stevenage with the opening goal. As the Stevenage attacker bared down on goal, he unleashed a shot which seemed destined for the back of the net but Byrne’s out-stretched leg pushed the ball past the post. However, the home side managed to convert minutes later.

emerged for the remaining 45 minutes, the O’s had a point to prove.

In what was an impressive solo effort, the Stevenage midfielder received the ball from deep and dribbled past multiple Orient defenders before slotting the ball past Byrne to provide the home side with the lead. The O’s struggled to find any sort of rhythm following Stevenage’s opener and the home side managed to double their lead just prior to halftime.

After 55 minutes, Jaheim Whyte got the O’s off the mark and kickstarted the comeback. Following a stray pass, Whyte latched onto the loose ball and sprayed a pass wide to Jephte Tanga. The Orient wide man then delivered a ball back into the penalty area which found the target man, who converted with a low-driven shot.

From a wide position, a Stevenage man displayed some quick feet to beat his defender and drove towards the byline. The winger then cut his cross back to the striker waiting in the six-yard box, who converted from close range.

Following Whyte’s goal, the O’s continued to push for an equaliser and it eventually came just four minutes from time. As the ball bobbled amongst the penalty area, with Stevenage unable to clear, Ben Staerck established his authority on the situation and fired the ball past the Boro goalkeeper, which levelled the scores.

As the referee called an end to the first half, Saah took the opportunity to speak to his players and ultimately demanded a more positive performance in the second half. As the two teams

Following this draw, the O’s have now picked up four points in their last two outings. The Academy side will now endure a two-week Christmas break and will next be in action at the dawn of 2021.

THIRD QUALIFYING ROUND – EASTBOURNE TOWN 1-4 LEYTON ORIENT Orient enjoyed their trip to the seaside as goals from Allison McCann, Hayley Barton, Egle Trezzi and Kate Bradley saw them comfortably dispatch an Eastbourne side from the division below.

Orient reached the Second Round of the competition for the first time in their history last season before eventually losing out to Portsmouth. They’ll be looking to go one better this campaign when they travel to a Hounslow side in the division above.

Remarking on her side’s progression in the tournament, O’s forward Scarlett Smith emphasised how much the cup means to her and the club as a whole. “It might be my last season playing in the FA Cup and it’s still so magical. I think in women’s football especially it means a lot to us so to get as far as possible is definitely our aim.”
