BARRIE FAIRBROTHER
A word from the Boss
ROSS EMBLETON “WE GO INTO EVERY GAME CONFIDENT, BELIEVING THAT WIN IS GOING TO COME” RECENT FORM
“After our defeats to Forest Green and Bolton, we were conscious that we were either winning or losing games – so, we have looked at ways to get a point out of a game rather than nothing. At the weekend we didn’t get the result we wanted, but we got into numerous good positions.”
TRANMERE ROVERS
“When we played them, they were poor on the night and we felt comfortable. It is a very good squad, and they have an experienced manager. We go into every game confident, believing that win is going to come.”
HECTOR KYPRIANOU
“He’s very close. He’s been without football for a long time. We will have to weigh up what legs are looking like. He will go into the squad.”

JOBI McANUFF FORM
“It’s important to address our recent form. There’s nobody at this football club that isn’t disappointed with our form and results. I can assure everyone we are doing everything day in, day out to turn it around and get going again. It’s obviously disappointing to slump at this stage of the season after we’d seemed to have got ourselves in a position to have a good crack at it. Things change quickly and we want to win and secure positive results as quickly as we can.”
TRANMERE ROVERS
“They went through a real tough spell themselves earlier in the season. They have a similar group of players to the ones they had earlier. It just shows if you get out of a situation and get on a run, momentum can carry you. They come into the game in really good form. We know it’s going to be a tough game; we have to be at it and make sure we get a good result.”
“WHEN RESULTS AREN’T GOING YOUR WAY IT’S EASY FOR PEOPLE TO DIVIDE, WE ASK EVERYONE TO STAY WITH US AND GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER”
TOGETHERNESS
“Togetherness has always been the big thing at this club since I’ve been back. We are all on the same page, we’ve seen how powerful that can be and when we are, just how good we can be. When results aren’t going your way it’s easy for people to divide, we ask everyone to stay with us and get through this together.”

JAMES DAYTON +++++
RECENT FORM
“We’re all aware our form isn’t good enough and none of us are happy with it. We need to stick together and put the work in. Games are coming thick and fast, that’s what you want when you’re in bad form. We can come out of this sticky patch, better for it and that starts Saturday.”
TRANMERE
“Tranmere and Bradford are examples of teams that have turned their fortunes around. It’s just what happens in a season. Tranmere have signed new players just like us. I don’t think it’s one of those things that is going to keep going and going, it will click and it will change.”
GOOD PLAYERS
“They have a great group of players. Vaughan – Premier League, Nugent – Premier League, Spearing – Premier League. They have great players, and it was only a matter of time that their form turned around. They’re in good from. We will have to be at our best because it will be a test, but a test I’m sure the lads will stand up to. I hope we come out of it with three points.”
16
GET TO KNOW JAMES DAYTON Favourite players growing up? David Ginola and Ryan Giggs. Best player in the Premier League right now? I think Phil Foden and Joao Cancelo are incredible at City right now. Jack Grealish was outstanding before picking up his injury. Best player you’ve either played with or against? Luis Suarez in the FA Cup! Who do you think will win the Euros? It will be a really good competition but I’m going to say Belgium.

49 YEARS ON… LEYTON ORIENT 3-2 CHELSEA
Barrie Fairbrother on his goal that snatched a famous win for Orient.
“THEIR TEAM WAS FULL OF INTERNATIONALS. FOR US TO EVEN PLAY AGAINST THEM WAS A GREAT FEELING. IF YOU CAN COME AWAY WITH THE RESULT, YOU’RE WALKING ON CLOUD NINE!”
How are you Barrie? “I live in Australia. I did try and get back to England for the reunion dinner but that all got cancelled! My school mates and I were looking to do a reunion too, but things will get better!”
49 year anniversary, that game must stick out in your mind? “Oh yes. That was THE game. The game of my career. It was a great day for the club.”
It was back and forth against a Chelsea side in a higher division, how did the game play out? “For the first 20 minutes, I think we were flustered by it. Chelsea used the flanks. They scored two headed goals from crosses into the box. They used the flanks because the pitch was coming up through the middle. We gradually got back into it. When Phil Hoadley got that goal, it gave us hope. When Mickey Bullock got the second one – it was a good old fashioned cup tie then. It was up and down, back and forth until the last minute.”
26
There were some huge names in that Chelsea side. Peter Bonetti, Peter Osgood. You all must have been so excited for the challenge? “We were. You loved to play against these people. Their team was full of internationals. For us to even play against them was a great feeling. If you can come away with the result, you’re walking on cloud nine!”
Brisbane Road was absolutely packed. Tell us about the atmosphere? “It was tremendous all the way through. Of course, it went quiet when their second goal went in. Once we started to come back into it you could feel the crowd lift! Once our second goal went in, it was incredible. I loved every minute.”
Looking back, the whole game we just kept trying and in the last minute it paid off!”
Did you celebrate that night? “Well, I had a bit of an incident. The Chelsea supporters invaded the pitch. I was surrounded and this guy threatened to break my legs. You’re on TV – I was just waiting for the police. The funny thing was – my wife and I got the train home afterwards and popped into the bar for a drink. In come these Chelsea supporters. The guy next to me was the same guy I saw on the pitch! He just looked at me, I had my club jacket on and he said: “Are you the guy that scored that goal? I said, “yes.” You can imagine, I was shaking by then. He said, “You were lucky!”
Talk us through your winning goal!
“Yes, we were.”
“Mickey Bullock and I were chasing the ball through the middle, through the mud. Tom Walley got a chance and just volleyed it through. Ian Bowyer and I chased it, he collided with the ‘keeper and very nicely the ball fell to my feet and I stroked it home. David Webb went sliding in with it, he was trying to stop it!
I wasn’t going to argue with him! I picked up my drink, took it back to my wife and said, “drink up, we’re going!””
Arsenal in the next round “We hit the woodwork three times before Alan Ball got the winner. We matched them. They won the double that year, but we matched them! That’s football!”

Thank you for supporting Barts Charity Leyton Orient Football Club and its incredible fans have shown amazing generosity, helping us through the worst of COVID-19 and making for a safer and healthier East London community in the midst of a global pandemic. You’ve truly been there for our NHS staff and patients when they’ve needed it most. We’re particularly humbled to be receiving donations from the new home kit this season, generously sponsored by former player Harry Kane. As the dedicated charity for the five Barts Health NHS hospitals – including Whipps Cross – we fund innovations in patient care, pioneering medical research and vital support for doctors and nurses. This year, our NHS workers have gone to extraordinary lengths to care for our community. And that’s why we made £500,000 rapid COVID-19 funding available during the initial peak and have since given £3m for long term programmes focused on staff wellbeing and mental health.
