The Ardardan Estate has been in the hands
of the Montgomery family since 1996 and in that time they’ve lovingly restored the farm and business from the sorry neglected state it was found in. With hard work, ambition and imagination, May and Grant Montgomery with their daughters Sara and Sue plus a dedicated team have created a little haven on the north shore of the Clyde between Cardross and Helensburgh.. They are delighted to throw the gates of the estate open to visitors and proud of the reputation they have built for excellence. Visitors will find a restored walled garden on the banks of the river featuring a farm shop, garden nursery and tearoom that serves delicious home-made food and excellent produce. However, that’s not all. Ardardan also offers a glimpse into a working farm and a Woodland Walk.
The enchanting and peaceful walk yields something new whenever you visit. In spring there are carpets of colourful flowers and in autumn the trees glow as the leaves change colour. A stroll is the perfect way to work up an appetite for a treat in the tearoom. Alternatively pick up some treats in the Farm Shop and create your own picnic. Younger visitors are thrilled by a chance to meet some of the four-legged and feathered inhabitants of Ardardan. Pigs Ki and Wi are the star attraction, but other animals include the Texel sheep and lambs in the spring, Highland cows and hens. There are a host of special events this summer at Ardardan including regular Teddy Bears’ Picnics and a family fun sports day in August. Summertime Foods and Beverages… and Your Smile During the summer, you’re probably going to attend a lot of parties, and with parties come a variety of beverages and snacks. Summertime drinks include soda, sports drinks, white wine, beer, and lemonade, and these drinks are loaded with sugar. A simple tip for counteracting the effects of these beverages, however, is to rinse your mouth with water regularly throughout the party. But don’t brush your teeth too soon after consuming acidic beverages. These drinks can soften enamel, and brushing while the enamel is soft can do more damage. Wait at least an hour before you brush!
Party foods can be dark in color and full of sugar as well. Dark foods contribute to stained teeth, and we all know what happens when you eat too much sugar! Cavities! But by rinsing your mouth after eating these dark and sugary foods, you can avoid staining and cavities — and a trip to the dentist during your summer for teeth whitening and a checkup can give your smile a boost! Did you also know that the chlorine in swimming pools can also affect and discolour your teeth? If the PH balance in the water isn’t right, then those that spend 6 hours or more in the pool can
suffer from this. Again, proper rinsing and brushing will help combat this. It’s pretty simple to keep your smile in shape during the summer months. Brushing, flossing, rinsing after food or drink, and regular trips to the dentist can help keep you looking and feeling your best. Now you just have to figure out how to stay cool! Cochran Dickie and the Vine Trust - Selling Houses to Build Houses The Vine Trust was established in 1985 in response to the famine in Ethiopia. It was set up by churches in Bo’ness, Falkirk, who felt compelled to do something. A small gift shop was born with the ethos that everyone can do something to help others. Since then, many successful projects have been undertaken in Peru and Africa. The one supported by Cochran Dickie helps vulnerable children in the Moshi area of Tanzania. The children being helped have become orphaned and are living on the streets as a result of their parents’ death. Most of the deaths are due to HIV/AIDS, but many are from treatable diseases such as TB and malaria. Vine Trust helps fund the building of village homes to avoid children drifting to the city streets and a city orphanage to rescue those already there. The maintenance and on-going running costs of the homes is being funded by local donors. The overall vision for the Vine Trust and their partners is to provide a safe home, food, education and love for the vulnerable children in the area.
They have begun with the construction of a home for 40 children, a school which educates 300 and a number of smaller homes in rural Moshi which provide a house for one ‘parent’ and a small number of children through a more ‘local community based’ project.
Festival for folky folk
Inverclyde- based Celtic fusion band Reely Jiggered are bringing a new music festival to the area this summer. Thanks to funding from Creative Scotland and Enterprise Music Scotland, The Folk for Folk Festival will burst into life between July 22 and August 3. Singer and fiddler Alison McNeil has put together a programme of Summer Folk Music Workshops for young people and adults, concerts showcasing the participants of the workshops, a concert featuring BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year Robyn Stapleton, Reely Jiggered and David Douglas and a closing family ceilidh. The workshops are for young people aged eight and over, and adults. The post beginner to intermediate workshop takes place on Tuesday 22 to Thursday 24 July from 10am to 4pm. An intermediate to advanced workshop will go on from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 August from 10am to 4pm. In both cases, participants on their instrument will attend three days and received expert sectional and group sessions that focus on Scotland’s heritage and culture as well as look at the folk traditions of other cultures. Each group culminate in a concert on the last day.
Cochran Dickie Estate Agency have made a decision to donate to the Vine Trust who build houses in Tanzania for those without a home, a proportion from the sale of each house they sell, to help achieve this. You can see more at www.vinetrust.org Tutors for both groups are highly experienced musicians who have performed all over the world and are keen to inspire, challenge and have fun. The workshops will be lead by Reely Jiggered’s Alison McNeil (fiddle and Scots song) and Fiona McNeill (guitar and drums). There will also be sessions with BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2014 Robyn Stapleton (Scots/ Gaelic song), David Douglas (vocal coach and singer-songwriter), Eleanor Holley (clarsach) & Reely Jiggered drummer Scott McLean. The workshops cost £35 for children and £60 for adults. Application forms are available from the www.reelyjiggered. co.uk website and take place at the Royal Gourock Yacht Club. Events wrap up with a concert on Saturday 2 August featuring BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year Robyn Stapleton, Reely Jiggered and David Douglas and a final fling at a family ceilidh on Sunday 3 August. Native Plants to fill your garden with colour

With a huge array of colourful plants available from garden centres, expertly sourced from around the globe, we are continuously spoiled when it comes to choosing new plants for our garden. Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants just because they’re right outside your door. Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, such as sweetly delicately scented primroses, even the invasive cow parsley looks great en-masse in spring. Then there are the striking red poppies which adorn the fields mid-way through the year. Wild, hardy Geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalised in grasses, proudly showing off their ‘Chelsea purple’ flowers. The stunning blooms of the pasque flower are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener). Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded. May and June is showtime for the foxgloves whose tall slender stems carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers which will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. Take care if you have small children though as foxgloves are poisonous if ingested.

The Asian moth orchids are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor. For a similar native, more easily available to buy and worth planting this month, look for Colchicums or naked ladies … so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the Autumn Crocus, it does seem strange to see it in flower in September, but it has to be one of my favourite native bulbs. Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, it’s harder to kill these plants … they’re born survivors! You’ve heard of The Moonwalk – well this is the Dunoon Walk and over 100 people from near and far are expected to turn out for this inaugural fundraiser for Cowal and Ardgowan Hospices. Ardgowan Hospice in Greenock is a wonderful centre of care for those living with a serious, life limiting illness. Established in 1981, the team at Ardgowan Hospice care for and support over 1000 people from the Inverclyde area each year.

The type of care, on both a physical and spiritual level that is offered by the nurses and staff at both Cowal Hospice and Ardgowan Hospice is immeasurable. This is our chance, as a community, to show our appreciation and admiration for everything that they do, by raising awareness and funds towards important equipment’. Susan’s co-organiser Colin Moulson of PA23 BID, the Dunoon private businesses funded project said, ‘You don’t have to be a fitness fanatic by any means to take part, but you do need to enjoy walking, blethering and having fun! We would love to welcome participants from outwith the Dunoon community and will be encouraging people from across the
water to come and join us. You can opt to do 1K, 5K or 10K and whoever you choose to do it with - friends, family, your buggies or your grannies - is up to you!’ Hoof it for the Hospices starts from Dunoon Ferry Terminal at 8pm on Saturday 19th July. If you would like to take part, you can pick up an entry form from Ardgowan Hospice, Nelson Street Greenock. The entry fee is £10 and includes a T-shirt, bottle of water and to help you recover, a juicy burger from the BBQ once you have crossed the finishing line. A minimum of £30 sponsorship per entry is suggested. Hoof it for the Hospices is being organised by Susan Hoy, in association with the PA23 BID who have kindly helped with logistics and the provision of leaflets, advertising and entry forms to help make this worthwhile event possible.

New location same excellent service at MacDonald & Co Readers of the magazine who have been passing by the Eldon Street offices of our regular Money Matters contributors MacDonald & Co. will have seen this in the windows. Robert MacDonald and his team have moved to new premises at Kempock Place in Gourock, a short half-mile walk away. The firm’s new home was, for more than 40 years, a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, until MacDonald & Co bought it at the end of last year. Robert said: “We are leaving the previous property at Eldon Street with very mixed feelings. Arran. Everyone knows all about it. It’s lovely, it’s over there and we all remember going as kids, don’t we? Fond memories of ice cream on the seafront or exploring the glens is all very well, but isn’t it time you gave Arran a second look? It may be known as the Sleeping Warrior, but the largest island in the Firth of Clyde has hardly been snoozing in recent times. Arran has staked its claim as one of Scotland’s top tourist destinations with something for everyone. There are gourmet foodstuffs, adrenaline-fuelled adventures and the most luxurious pampering imaginable. Is biomass the answer for your home energy? As the price of fossil fuels continue to rise and the drive to cut carbon emissions increases, one option on the table is to heat homes using wood or other plant matter. Wood-fuelled heating systems, also called biomass systems, burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide warmth in a single room or to power central heating and hot water boilers. A stove burns logs or pellets to heat a single room - and may be fitted with a back boiler to provide water heating as well. A boiler burns logs, pellets or chips, and is connected to a central heating and hot water system. A wood-fuelled boiler could save you up to £650 a year compared to old electric heating. Wood fuel for a biomass system is generally cheaper than other heating options although the price does vary. However, schemes such as the Renewable Heat Incentive may be available to help with the cost. Of course, for many people, the main incentive for installing wood-fuelled heating systems is that they are a low-carbon option. The carbon dioxide emitted when wood is burned is the same amount as was absorbed when the plant was growing. When considering converting to biomass, it is worth bearing in mind that the boilers are generally

larger than traditional boilers and that you will need somewhere to store the fuel (logs or pellets) and access for deliveries if you are going to buy in bulk to ensure the best price. The advantage is that you can stock-pile fuel for colder months. You will also need a flue that complies with all the regulations for wood-burning appliances. A woodfuelled system can usually be incorporated into your existing heating system. Wood-fuelled boilers, stoves and heaters should be kept clean and swept regularly to remove ash. This depends on the appliance but it is important to keep it running properly. It’s also necessary to sweep chimneys and flue pipes regularly. This guide, by Mariessa Devlin of Enchanted Forest Nursery, will help you support your child on the daunting step up to primary school. However, if your child has been in a childcare setting since they were a few months old, they will have actively (and discreetly) been prepared for school since their early years. The most important time for children moving to primary school is the ‘pre-school’ year. During this phase, nursery staff take a more focused approach to the learning experiences, whilst still being led by the children’s interests. While the details of school enrolment programmes are set by local authorities, most are very robust and schools use various methods to engage the child and their family well ahead of the start date. All children, however, will find starting school easier the more independent they are. Therefore, it’s helpful to do the following: ■ Encourage your child to go to the toilet on their own ■ Ensure school clothing is easy for your child to manage ■ Consider school uniform choices on PE days. If the school has a poloshirt option, this is great for a PE day until your child can confidently tie their school tie ■ Consider your child’s shoe fastenings. If they can’t tie laces, then think about another kind of fastening. ■ Consider meal routines at home – sitting for meals, using cutlery - so children transfer these skills to school ■ Encourage your child to find and use a tissue for their nose, wash their hands, tidy up, share and take turns. ■ Positively discuss school, possibly taking your child to see the building and playground and by acknowledging that they may be feeling a little apprehensive, even if they appear excited about a new uniform or school bag. Some points to remember: ■ Primary schools do not expect children to be able to write when they start. It is far more important that they have had plenty of opportunity to build up the control in their hands. When the teacher begins to teach formal handwriting, children with welldeveloped muscle control will learn to write with ease. Here’s what you can do: – Activities involving drawing, painting, colouring and cutting will help co-ordination. – Construction toys aid dexterity and imagination. – Card and word games and jigsaws all help with pre-reading skills. – Exposure to books fosters a life-long love of reading ■ It does help if your child can recognise their own name but remember not to write in capitals: For example: Claire not CLAIRE
■ Treat it as a natural step in your
child’s life.
■ Children take their outlook from you
so if your experience was not a happy one, your child does not need to know, and theirs will be different.
Starting school is a very exciting time and during the weeks prior to leaving nursery, staff there will be talking about this transition, using role-play to develop familiarity with ‘big’ school and may have arranged visits from reception class teachers and a visit to the school. Primary 1 teachers are highly trained and, more, importantly understand the importance of their job as they take a child and start them on their journey through school, fostering a love of learning.
