Early Years in the Countryside St Columba’s is delighted about the positive response to our new Early Years offering for children aged 3 and 4 years, which will begin in August 2015. We believe that this new service will support children’s earliest school experiences, nurture their love of learning and set the groundwork for his or her future development. Fun, confidence and a sense of security are at the heart of everything we do, but our teacher-led experience also ensures that children benefit from a tailor-made programme that suits their personal needs and are well-prepared for the transition to Junior 1.

While the core programme takes place in the morning, our flexible wraparound provision means that care is available from 7.45am – 6pm. We are fortunate indeed to enjoy a rural setting where children can enjoy fresh air and green spaces during their school day. The outdoor environment will soon be even better - to allow us to make the most of the leafy campus both for play and learning, improvements to the Junior School playground have started during the Easter break and are expected to finish in August. Senior School was also far from quiet when work started on our science block, where major upgrading of the existing science faculty has begun to create six modern laboratories and to make improvements to the fabric of the building. If you would like to find out more about how your child will benefit or to arrange a taster visit, please call us on 01505 872768 or go to earlyyears.st-columbas. org. We’d love to show you what makes St Columba’s so very special.

Daisy dispels the fear of birth… one positive movement at a time An active antenatal class, designed to dispel the fear of birth, is launching in Renfrewshire and Inverclyde and aims to support and educate pregnant women in a ground-breaking way. Daisy Birthing, a Social Enterprise programme run by the Daisy Foundation, provides antenatal education with a difference – using gentle flowing movements and breathing techniques that not only work on hidden muscles key for birthing, but promote muscle memory that makes birthing more instinctive. Lynne Barrowman, the local teacher for Daisy Birthing in Renfrewshire & Inverclyde, decided to train to teach the classes following her own positive experience with Daisy Birthing last year. Speaking today, Lynne said: “I had my two sons in my early 20s, and after a 13 year gap decided to try for a little girl. To say I was scared about labour would be an understatement! I got induced with both boys and had a bit of a tough time and dreaded the idea of being induced again. “I was told about Daisy Birthing by a friend who had a great experience, and the classes I attended completely opened my eyes to pregnancy and labour, and I learned so much that made so much sense! “When it came to my labour day the breathing techniques

kept me so focused throughout – so much so that I managed on only two paracetamol! I’m now so passionate about what I’ve learned that I decided to train to teach it for myself. I really want to share my amazing experience and to help other mums to be become more aware of how they can help themselves and make it a positive experience”. All birth choices are supported and classes educate women not only about active birth but also relaxation, medical inductions and interventions, to promote a more positive pregnancy and birth. Classes can be adapted for women of all shapes and sizes, and for those with pregnancy-related medical conditions. Lynne’s classes will take place over a 6 week block, and will take place in Erskine on a Wednesday evening and Port Glasgow on a Saturday morning. These can be booked by contacting Lynne on telephone number 07939 675018 or email lynne-barrowman@thedaisyfoundation.com. More information of Daisy Birthing can be found at www.thedaisyfoundation.com

INSTALLING NEW WINDOWS & DOORS IS SURPRISINGLY EASY - WITH ART Sam Hardie’s house was in dire need of a new set of windows and doors: after years of putting it off, he decided it was time for a change. Read on to find out why he was surprised to see how easy it can be to replace windows and doors! “My wife had actually been campaigning to get the windows and doors done for a few years,” says Sam Hardie, “it was really starting to become necessary to do something about it.” Their house in Renfrewshire is about 20 years old, and it was starting to show in the original timber-frame windows. “Now that the weather’s warming up, it’s less noticeable, but on chilly mornings there would be internal condensation in the sealed units,” say Sam. Two exterior doors had also been there since the house was built, and seen a lot of use. “We saw the ad in the paper, called ART Windows and Doors to see whether they could help, and visited the Paisley showroom to try and find some replacement windows and doors. Having worked as a joiner and then gone onto construction sales and architecture later on, I’ve always had an unshakeable bias against anything other

than timber for windows and doors. Therefore, it was a huge relief to find that the products we saw at the showroom were very wood-like, and would match the decor of our home. The salesman also explained the technology – old windows just can’t compare to new energy efficient units”. After making sure the windows and doors met their standards, and would fit into the look of the house, Sam received a quote for replacing nine windows, one composite door and one UPVC door. “Having worked in construction, I was confident I could spot an honest price, which is exactly what we were offered. There was no back and forth: the first offer was fair, and that was it.” Before they placed the order, Sam and his wife were invited to take a look at an ongoing project 300 yards down from their own house, to see for themselves the attention to detail in ART Windows and Doors installations. “We were impressed by the quality of work, and by the good report by the happy customer, “ says Sam,

SAM HARDIE IS DELIGHTED WITH HIS NEW DOORS & WINDOWS FROM ART.

“so we pretty much decided right there that we would have ART do the replacements on our house as well.” It is safe to say that Sam’s house now has what it previously needed for so long: durable, high-performance windows & doors – all installed with minimal fuss, at an honest price from ART Windows and Doors Ltd.

Bee Season at Ivy Cottage

The bee is an incredible bio-indicator, a true barometer measuring the quality of our environment. While shuttling back and forth between the beehive and its natural surroundings, the bee takes stock of the health status of ecosystems by performing a biopsy of all it gathers. Plants, water, soil, air particles; everything that surrounds us is, in part, taken as a sample by the bees, which provides us with an imprint of the environment. The last twenty years have seen a decline in bee populations. This imprint is disturbing, symptomatic of the environment’s sick state, a diagnosis that reveals the repercussions and consequences this decline will have on human life and biodiversity on a planetary scale. At Ivy Cottage Dental Practice our 2 bee colonies have been helping the gardens of Inverkip bloom with 2 active hives providing enough Bees to pollenate a 3 mile radius. The Hives are maintained and harvested by our good friend and enthusiastic bee advocate Warren Bader of Plan Bee Ltd. Most businesses now have subscribed to the importance of social responsibility and as part of the Clyde Dental Groups overall approach, Ivy Cottage is playing an important role. At Ivy Cottage we pride ourselves on providing dentistry in an environment that is a bit different from your average high street dental practice. Our relaxed village cottage feel provides a welcoming and relaxing environment great for anxious patients, families and people new to the area looking for a dentist. Feel free to come and see our bees, have a look around and get a feel for the place. We also have a fantastic team of dental nurses buzzing around reception who would be more than happy to help with any questions regarding treatments, registration or bee related enquiries!

Pests?

No problem for Gordon… Greenock man Gordon Sinclair decided upon a career change after 28 years of service with the RAF Regiment. He left the RAF in July 2013 and has since been working hard building his business Inverclyde Pest Control Services. “Setting up a new business from scratch was a daunting prospect” said Gordon, “however by applying the same professional work ethos that I learned in the military I was able to stay on course and achieve my dream of self-employment”. Attending certified and nationally recognized courses run by the British Pest Control Association to gain his qualification as a pest control technician, Gordon’s business is now going from strength to strength. Recently, The Greenock Telegraph highlighted the issue of Pest Control in Inverclyde, stating that it was one of the worst areas in Scotland for complaints about rats and bedbugs as well as being the third highest for callouts. Being qualified to deal with numerous types of pests from rodents to crawling insects is why Gordon is the man to solve your problems!

Sit back and enjoy something long and cool

Summer is when your hard work comes to fruition and you can enjoy the beauty of the greenery and flowers you’ve worked so hard to bring to maturity. But there are always jobs for the busy gardener, the least of which is mowing your lawn, and general lawn maintenance. This is just the time to get that compost heap started. Don’t put woody things in it though, or brassica rubbish. Burn such things and add the ash to the heap. Remember all your organic kitchen rubbish is good, as are grass cuttings, dead headings and other leafy matter. Keep the heap under control within some sort of restraint such as chicken wire round four posts, or a brick or wooden wall on three sides. Build it up in layers at least 6 inches deep and water each well before adding the next layer. Activator helps get things moving, (see your garden centre), and turning the heap, sides to middle, also helps the process of decomposition. Finished compost should be dark, soft, crumbly, and sweet smelling. When it’s ready, use it as a nourishing mulch, digging into the soil, or as a liner in planting holes for new shrubs and trees. Dead-heading is essential for all continuously flowering plants throughout the summer. Roses especially must have the spent flowers removed or the strength of the plant will go into seed formation. Shrubs in general also benefit from dead flowers being removed. If you want some seeds leave just a few Clyde Life Magazine

in place. For plants like dahlias, deadheading is essential to encourage further blooming. Constant weeding will of course be necessary all the time because weeds grow, no matter what the prevailing weather conditions. Do remember to keep the greenhouse well ventilated even if the sun doesn’t appear too fierce. In between showers it can blast down with surprising intensity at this time of year and protection may well be necessary. If so, paint over the glass (on the inside) with whitewash to cut down on the danger of scorching. Again never water when the sun is on the foliage. And this applies to general watering. Do it late in the evening. Water plentifully in one place rather than all over sparsely. Allow the water to fall on the plants in fine diffusion from a great height. If you have a patio area, you could build a barbecue for family meals al

fresco and outdoor summer entertaining when the weather allows. A greenhouse is essential if you want to raise your own seedlings, cultivate exotic plants or keep delicate plants safe over winter. These come in a huge range of styles and sizes, and most can be erected without too many complications. It will at least give you the opportunity to do some gardening when the weather prevents you doing it outside! Don’t forget a shed for all those gardening tools and implements. Much safer to keep them there than in the house. A shed also makes a good workshop or hobby room, so it could pay for itself in no time. Some sheds combine a summerhouse section as well, which is a nice feature to add to any garden. Outside lighting is often overlooked in garden planning. It extends the hours you can enjoy the outdoors. It also makes an important contribution to the security of your home. Choose from a range of wall and stand mounted fittings. look for fittings that turn lights on when natural light begins to fade. There are also lights that respond to movement. Open water is always attractive. Waterfalls and fountains are easy to establish. Pools and ponds have never been easier to put in using pre-formed polythene shells, sheeting or waterproof cement. A look round your local garden centre will show you what’s possible and available. Whatever you do this summer, don’t neglect your garden. It can and should be a joy for all the family. Scotland’s most technologically advanced independently family run garage Advanced Automotive Solutions from Auto-Tec Scotland Auto-Tec of Port Glasgow has grown from modest beginnings in 1988 to become Scotland’s most technologically advanced independent garage in 2015.

on the wheel and vice versa. The system is fast and extremely accurate and customers will immediately notice that their car is much smoother to drive.

Auto-Tec won Greenock Chamber Of Commerce Bees Knees Award for “best Use of technology or Innovation” but it is not resting on its laurels.

Auto-Tec also brings to Inverclyde Hunter’s most advanced 4-wheel Alignment System. This technology enables Auto-Tec to offer a 90 second quick check service FREE to all new and existing customers. Following the check expert staff discuss the results with the customer and any recommended adjustments.

Auto-Tec founder Robert McKenzie who owns the company with his son says you cannot pull the wool over customers’ eyes. The company has just installed the world’s most advanced tyre and wheel balancing equipment. The Hunter system was imported from the USA and Auto-Tec is one of only four garages in Scotland with this level of technology – the others hold franchises for three of the world’s most desirable car brands. The new equipment simulates a road-test and the customer is then taken through a printout which clearly shows problems, if they exist. The next step is for the system to match high spots on the tyre with low spots

Auto-Tec’s new tyre equipment has been introduced just a year after the company installed its state-of-the-art Autologic vehicle diagnostics system. This technology, normally only available to franchised dealers means Auto-Tec can offer a comprehensive diagnostics check for only £65+VAT Auto-Tec’s Autologic system covers a variety of manufacturers including Land Rover, Mercedes, Citroen, Peugeot, BMW, Jaguar, Skoda, Volvo, Audi, Renault, Porsche,

Volkswagen, Seat and Bentley. No longer do you have to travel out of Inverclyde for servicing or fault finding because there is no local dealer. This saves customers time, inconvenience and most importantly money since Auto-Tec’s labour rates are lower than franchised garages. Employing around twenty staff Auto-Tec is a one-stop garage covering all aspects of the private and business customers’ requirements including wheel alignment and tracking, accident damage repairs, paintwork rectification and tyres at competitive prices. Auto-Tec’s recovery fleet can manage a vehicle up to heavy commercial and operates both locally and throughout the UK. Auto-Tec’s significant and ongoing investment in the latest technology is reflected in the fast that the company pays more than £10,000 per annum for technology system licensing and software updates.

Sunny and warm South Africa awaits you……

South Africa, in particular the beautiful lands around the Cape, should feature at the top of every discerning traveller’s wish list. Enjoy the spectacular views of Table Mountain in Cape Town, or sample the wine from the famous vineyards of Franschoek and Stellenbosch, not far from the city. Travel on to view the wildlife and natural beauty along the Garden Route and finish your holiday at a malaria-free luxury game reserve. Or include a visit to the grandfather of all game reserves at the Kruger National Park. Apart from the excellent food, wine and warm hospitality, South Africa offers outstanding value for money. Feedback from one of my Clients on their 16 night holiday to South Africa, including Cape Town, Garden Route and Malaria Free Game Reserve. This itinerary is ideal for couples, honeymooners or families seeking great accommodation, a leisurely itinerary and hassle free game viewing.

Cape Town - We enjoyed staying near the waterfront - great range of restaurants and good shopping mall on a wet day! Also easy access to Robben Island Tour and other Tours; (Red and Blue bus tours worthwhile including Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. We visited Cape Point and Boulder to see the penguins on the way to Stellenbosch. Cape Point is spectacular. Stellenbosch - The wine tram great tour. Choice of 6 vineyards to visit. Hermanus - Great hotel right on the front. Worth buying binoculars to see the whales. Good cliff top walks from town. A few nice eating places. The Burgundy restaurant was great for both dinner and breakfast. Oudtshoorn - Great drive through the mountains. Stopped off for lunch at Barrysdale - little place in the mountains. Visited ostrich farm and cango caves. Both quite touristy but interesting. Didn›t have time to see the Meerkats!

Plettenberg Bay - Great views from hotel and coastline. Good walks along beach and cliffs. Can recommend the 5km walk round Robberg Island, the views were amazing. Saw seals and dolphins. Also went to visit a bird sanctuary nearby. Pumba Game Reserve - Fantastic accommodation. We did all 8 drives and very worthwhile doing them all. Ranger was very knowledgeable and shared lots of facts and lots of stories. We got to see many different animals up close; white lions, elephants, cheetahs, wildebeest, impala, warthogs, giraffes, zebra. Many other animals and birds... Fantastic experience. Driving in South Africa was easy. Our tour was a perfect mixture of scenery and visits. We felt like we saw it all..! Thank you again for a wonderful holiday.

For much more information on holidays to South Africa please don’t hesitate to contact me. – this particular example the cost was £3227 per person (July 14 booking) including 4 nights Full Board Safari with Game Drives and 12 nights at 4 & 5 star hotels, flights, transfers and car hire where required.

House call for first-time buyers

How to get on to the property ladder ■ Speak to your bank or building society or an independent financial advisor about how much you may be able to borrow. This will depend on salary or income – joint income if you are buying with a partner - and credit rating among other things. Don’t overstretch yourself and remember there are additional costs such as deposit, legal fees, survey fees, removal costs and Land and Building Transaction Tax for properties at the upper end of the market. You should aim to get an Agreement in Principle from your lender. ■ Choose the type of mortgage that’s right for you – Fixed Rate, Variable or Tracker. This is a choice you should make after detailed discussions with your financial adviser. ■ Appoint a solicitor to handle the legal aspects of the sale. Many solicitors operate in the property market and may be able to help you choose an appropriate property. ■ Having established your price range, it’s time to start pounding the pavements, reading the property columns – or hitting the internet. Just enter your price range and location you are after and see what emerges. ■ Check the Home Report. In Scotland, houses for sale have to be marketed with a a Single Survey pack that contains an assessment by a surveyor of the condition of the home, a valuation and an accessibility audit for people with particular needs.

30 | Clyde Life – Summer 2015

An Energy Report contains an assessment by a surveyor of the energy efficiency of the home and its environmental impact. It also recommends ways to improve its energy efficiency; A Property Questionnaire is completed by the seller of the home. It contains additional information about the home, such as Council Tax banding and factoring costs that will be useful to buyers. ■ The property will either by fixed price or offers over a certain figure. As this point you will probably have to arrange for your own survey for your lender’s benefit. ■ Assuming funds are in place, the first fixed price bid at the figure requested will usually succeed. In the offers-over situation, you have to make an assessment of what the local market is like, and this is where your solicitor or estate agent can come in handy. ■ Once you have made an offer and it has been accepted, you need to get your mortgage approved. ■ Every element of the agreement between you and the seller has to be negotiated, agreed and clearly set down in the contract, known in Scotland as the ‘missives’ ■ Negotiate a date of entry and arrange for your flitting. ■ Inform appropriate parties such as bank, doctor, utilities, employer, TV licence etc of your change of address. @clydelifemag

New clinic helps respiratory and skin disorders Sufferers from respiratory and skin conditions have welcomed the opening of a unique new clinic in Glasgow which draws on an age-old traditional curative process. Salann Halotherapy, run by husband and wife team Graham and Ashley McFarlane, is the first centre of its kind in the west of Scotland. It specialises in the use of salt therapy to treat respiratory conditions and infections by reducing inflammation and killing bacteria. It also has beneficial effects on certain skin conditions because the salt treatment reduces the negative effect of bacteria and oils. Graham, who suffers from asthma said: “I tried the salt treatment myself and saw the benefits after only one or two sessions – and I was convinced there was a wider market for the treatment. “Salt therapy has a fascinating history. It really started out as what was an old wives’ tale. “It originated in Eastern Europe where it was reckoned that people who entered salt caves felt invigorating effects. “People scoffed at the idea that it was anything other than superstition – and it wasn’t until around 200 years ago that a Polish physician proved that it actually worked.

“Then, in the mid-80s, Russian researchers recreated the conditions found in salt caves by creating an environment rich in microscopic particles of salt. “They used what is called a halogenerator, which creates its own micro-climate. “Minute particles of salt work at a cellular level. In terms of respiratory problems, the salt particles get deep into the lungs, helping to clear out mucus and aid breathing. “The treatment works on everything from coughs and colds to asthma and bronchitis.” Graham said that the same principle applies to skin conditions. He said: “The salt particles settle on the skin helping to remove dead skin, bacteria and harmful oils and this helps the skin to regenerate. “It is beneficial to sufferers from dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis for example.” Salann Halotherapy is now open for business in Glasgow’s Woodlands Road. If you have a respiratory or skin condition that is proving tough to treat, why not sign up for a free consultation and talk to an expert who can recommend the appropriate treatment. Packing it all in……or not Marilyn Thompson shares her Top Tips for avoiding Holiday Packing Hell With Summer just around the corner, thoughts are turning to our well earned holidays, our time to relax in the sun. However when it comes to packing our holiday wardrobe into one smallish suitcase we can often get ourselves into a panic, buying, then packing too much of all the wrong things. With this in mind I have put together some tips on packing but hopefully still enabling you to holiday in style. First of all plan to wear your heaviest clothes for travelling and layer up - so wear your jeans, top, cardigan, scarf, belt, jewellery and your comfy but heavier sightseeing sandals. Take your biggest summer bag as a carry on and this will also be used as your beach, shopping and everyday bag so you only need to pack one smaller evening bag or clutch. Lay everything you would ideally like to take out on your bed then prepare to get seriously ruthless - you will need to reject about half of it. If a piece of clothing can’t multi task then it doesn’t go in the case. If the item of clothing doesn’t have a specific purpose for your

40 | Clyde Life – Summer 2015

holiday, no matter how much you like it, then it doesn’t go in the case. Edit, edit, edit. Stick to three shades so ideally all your holiday clothes should work well together and be able to easily mix and match. Also, you want to look chic but comfortable, so if something doesn’t fit and flatter or make you feel great, then, it doesn’t go in the case! In reality you need only pack very little as, unless you are travelling deep into one of the farthest corners of the earth then remember that you will be able to hand wash some items and pick up that extra holiday bikini or inexpensive straw sun hat etc when you are there! So, with that in mind here is a basic clothing packing list:

White Shirt Dress from Next (£34)

• 3 dresses all suitable for evening dinner, shopping and as cover ups • 2 bikinis or bathing suits

@clydelifemag

Before finishing I must own up and admit that I generally don’t pack until about an hour before I have to leave for the airport. It’s a bad habit I know but for me I find that it makes me focus and pack quickly, however, I have made some monumental blunders doing it this way so perhaps this year I should take my own advice. In addition, remember to take waterproof mascara, sunglasses, a good book, your passport and your smile! Happy Holidays!

• 1 sarong or oversized shirt • 3 t-shirts or loose fitting tops • 2 pairs of shorts • 1 large scarf - a fantastic item which can be used as a cover up, a shawl, a blanket or a sun shade • Underwear and pj’s • 1 pair of heels or wedges and a pair of flip flops Don’t forget - you will also have all the layers of clothes you travelled in as well!

The good thing about packing is that once it’s done, you have no choice but to work with what you’ve got. It’s actually quite liberating to know that what’s packed into your suitcase is all you really need. If you plan on packing some special clothes or accessories then you may be interested to know that there is now a tracking device that you put into your suitcase which tells you exactly where it is at all times!

Money matters Busy time for our Money Matters man Hons, I can can now use the designation Fellow of the PFS, which is a great honour. I am very proud to have joined a very exclusive number of practicing financial planners in the country. The relief of achieving this has been overwhelming and I still cannot believe I actually reached this goal! Where now you may ask, as far as my academic studies are concerned? The next logical step would be to aim for a PhD Instead of Financial Planning. Imagine consulting Dr Bob about your bawbees!

This month we thought regular readers of the magazine would like to hear a bit more about our regular Money Matters contributor Robert MacDonald and some exciting recent achievements. One year on..... Last year we told you of the move to the Kempock Place offices. In June, we come up to the first anniversary in our new location and thought we would keep you up to date with what we’ve doing over the past 12 months. Last August, we were pleased that our small firm in Gourock was the first in Scotland to offer a Modern Apprenticeship in Financial Administration & Planning studying to Qualifications & Credit Framework Level Four. Taylor Gallagher (pictured opposite) joined us late summer and she is settling in very well to her first appointment and proved very quickly to be a valuable member of the team. At the tail end of 2014, I myself was awarded Fellowship (by examination) of the Personal Finance Society. In combination with my Chartered & Certified Financial Planner, and BA

Life-long learning is exactly that. Just last month, we were delighted to have been awarded Investor in Young People (IIYP) status for our work and support of our modern apprentice. I am extremely proud of this and as far as I know, we are the only small business locally to have been awarded this. We also decided this year to enter the Greenock Chamber of Commerce Bees Knees competition and are delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted for Inverclyde’s best small business. We are all looking forward to attending the awards ceremony at the beginning of June.

What is a modern apprenticeship? Many organisations around Scotland now look for young people who may have just left school, to join them as a Modern Apprentice. It’s a great platform for starting a career, particularly if you have little to no experience. Who can apply and what will I do? Modern Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16. All Modern Apprenticeships are developed by the industry or sector in which they will be used.

As a Modern Apprentice you’ll be employed from the very start of your training and receive a wage appropriate to the work you will be doing. Many Modern Apprentices also attend colleges or training centres. More help and information... If you think a Modern Apprenticeship could be the right choice for you, find out more by speaking to your school careers advisor or guidance teacher. You can also find out more at www.myworldofwork.co.uk

Modern Apprenticeships

■ Modern Apprenticeships are growing in popularity because they combine employment with training on the job. ■ An MA allows the participant to receive invaluable practical experience while working towards an industryrecognised vocational qualification. ■ Participants also earn a wage from the beginning. ■ Modern Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 or over. ■ If you’re over 25 you can still apply, but your employer may have to pay for the cost of training, depending on the sector and Modern Apprenticeship selected. ■ Modern Apprenticeships are available at four different levels. ■ Each level is mapped to the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) and is accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority Accreditation (SQA). For more information, visit the Skills Development Scotland website (http://www.myworldofwork.co.uk/modernapprenticeships) which also provides details of the industries which offer Modern Apprenticeships.

The Debaters, who meet weekly at the Your Voice Inverclyde Community Care Forum (ICCF), have received £1,000 from Persimmon Homes West Scotland to help fund a therapeutic art course. Persimmon Homes West Scotland has a development, Quay 3, Port Glasgow, just a couple of miles from The Debaters, and was keen to support a local group that provides such worthwhile community care. The donation kickstarted Persimmon’s Community Champions project, which will see a pot of £24,000 donated to local groups and charities over 12 months throughout the region. Two groups will now be chosen every month to receive a match-funding donation and charities are being encouraged to apply by completing an online form at www.persimmonhomes. com/charity.The Debaters, established in 2008, is a user led group who provide peer support and debate contemporary issues and current affairs. Alice Paul, senior development officer at Your Voice – ICCF says that the group recently completed a six month self-portrait programme which by the end had established and enhanced members’ skills. “Thank you Persimmon Homes for this kind donation, the funding will allow the group to progress their art therapy further and will help to pay for expert tuition, materials and resources plus run an open day for the community to actively engage in a workshop run by the group.” Ingrid Gahagan, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes West Scotland, said the community initiative was a way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company works, adding: “We are very proud to hand over this donation to The Debaters, a fantastic user led group which helps those support local people through creative expression.”
