Out with the old, in with the new. NEW DRYMEN BUSINESS HUB The new year started at Fraser C Robb with the arrival of builders, to create a new showroom for their Drymen business, this will allow them to showcase more of their ever expanding range of ground care and garden equipment. The showroom though is only half the story. Thanks to funding contributions from Stirling Council and Forth Valley & Lomond LEADER, Fraser C Robb will also be introducing Drymen Business Hub. This will be built above the newly enlarged Fraser C Robb showroom. To acknowledge our funders, it is important that we point out that the Drymen Business Hub is being part-financed by the European Union Forth Valley & Lomond LEADER Programme 2014-2020 and the Scottish Government. Europe Investing in Rural Areas. Whilst Fraser C Robb will own and operate Drymen Business Hub it will have a separate entrance and facilities. There will be disabled access and a range of services to support local businesses. These will include a meeting room, training courses, networking meetings, hot desks and a business parcel collection service. Well done to Fraser C Robb who certainly practice what they preach and are buying locally, with the vast majority of suppliers for the building work being based in the local area.

In the next edition of Park Life Magazine we will have more information and photographs to show you of the progress of the building work, with more information about the services for local businesses that will be provided.

Here are 7 top tips for improving your photography in 2018 from our very own local photographer Paul Saunders. TIP 1. Give yourself a year long project. Photograph the same scene throughout the year, and reflect the changing seasons.

(Tom Weir Statue, Balmaha in Autumn & Winter)

TIP 2. Shoot in what the photographers call the golden, or magic hour. That’s the first and last hour of daylight. The sun is low in the sky, creating some incredible light for photgoraphy.

(Drymen Viewpoint & Milarochy Bay)

TIP 3. For portraits, try to give the subject some top shade, instead having light coming in from the sides. You’ll need to turn the subject until you see their eyes catch the light. TIP 4. Keep your camera with you, you may never again get the chance to photograph what you see. Like this example in Luss, where I’ve never seen the leaves look quite like this.

TIP 5. Get up close to nature, ideally using a prime (fixed focal lens) for some amazing quality.

TIP 6. Back to portraits and give your subject something to do that’s fun - especially kids! They’ll be more natural. TIP 7. Plan a daytrip, like going to Staffa (ferry from Oban) to photograph puffins, or the bluebells in May on Inchcailloch Island.

Paul photographs weddings, businesses and families throughout the Park Life area and beyond. He also runs regular photography training courses in Balmaha. For more details and ideas please visit www.paulsaundersphotography.com www.parklifescotland.co.uk

STUNNING SURROUNDINGS WITH AFFORDABLE PACKAGES AT ONE OF SCOTLAND’S

MOST UNIQUE WEDDING VENUES House for an Art Lover offers couples the opportunity to celebrate their special day in a beautiful set of rooms imagined by Charles Rennie Mackintosh himself. The house was designed by Charles in 1901 as an elegant country retreat, and finally realised when it was built and opened in 1996. The Southside Glasgow location provides a leafy parkland setting, only a short drive from the city centre and with fantastic transport links. For over 20 years House for an Art Lover has been one of Glasgow foremost venues, providing a backdrop unlike any other for couples celebrating their special day. The venue marries stunning architectural design with beautifully crafted menus and a dedicated team of staff to provide a truly memorable day – as the feedback shows! We would definitely do it again. If you are thinking about the House of an Art Lover, don’t hesitate, you will not be disappointed. Laura & Herb (16.10.2017) If you are considering booking the house for an art lover for your wedding, stop thinking about it, just do it. The staff and venue are amazing. Thank you so much for giving us a day we will never forget. Park Life RECIPE Chicken Soup –

Pressure Cooker Method Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 35 mins Total Time: 50 mins Ingredients • 2 tablespoon butter • 2 medium onion chopped • 3 lbs chicken thighs • 4 celery ribs, sliced • 4 carrots, sliced

Delightfully satisfying and comforting chicken soup on the quick! This use of the pressure cooker creates both a wonderful soup broth and perfectly cooked chicken (not that soggy stuff…) ALL IN ONE POT.

• 3 handfuls spinach (1 to 1 1/2 pounds)

The pressure cooker has earned its place on the shelf with this recipe. You might be thinking, damn, I don’t have a pressure cooker. Take a quick scroll through this recipe any way and check out the result. See how incredibly fast you can have delicious soup?

• 2 lemons, juiced (about 4 tablespoons)

This soup features two layers of flavor, the deep rich and savory

• 8 cups filtered water • 3-4 bay leaves • 1 teaspoon thyme leaves

flavor from the fresh chicken broth and then it’s brightened up at the end with a large handful of spinach and some lemon juice. The lemon is amazing because the acidity enhances the flavor similar to salt AND causes the broth to transform into a white opaque color. Whooaaa food chemistry… • Get the water boiling prior to adding the chicken. • Set a timer and keep an eye on it once the chicken is in the pot and up to pressure, 15 minutes. • Use a quick release method to release the pressure and stop the cooking right after 15 minutes is up!

Dave Arcari plays on home ground at Buchanan Memorial Hall. SCOTTISH alt.blues troubadour Dave Arcari plays his first local show of 2018 at Buchanan Memorial Hall, Milton of Buchanan on Saturday 10 February – almost a year after his latest album Live at Memorial Hall was recorded at the same venue. Special guest for the show is London-based singer/ songwriter Lucy Zirins who opened for Arcari on his recent album launch shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Live at Memorial Hall was released on 1 September on double 180g coloured vinyl and digipak CD as well as download/streaming via iTunes, Spotify, Amazon MP3 and the usual digital services. The album has been attracting rave reviews and radio airplay at home and abroad, making album of the week on Celtic Music Radio. The release has also been in the top five in the Independent Blues Broadcasters’ Association chart since it’s release and voted as a ‘pick of the month’ by the association’s members. Arcari kicks off 2018 with a headline show at Belfast’s Out to Lunch Festival on Saturday 20 January and follows his Memorial Hall date with a bunch of Scottish shows, UK and European festivals and a return to the USA in October. Advance tickets (£8) are available from http:// wegottickets.com/davearcari – entry on the foor is £10 (subject to availability). Doors open at 7.30pm and showtime is 8pm sharp. The show is a ‘bring your own bottle’ event and open to all ages. “Dave plays like he got his skin turned inside out and pretty soon my skin was inside out too listening and it was all good. That boy bleeds for you – he a real down deep player and a soul man…” SEASICK STEVE

Park Life Interview

with master baker Melanie Andrews MBE of Helensburgh Baking with Melanie Andrews celebrates old fashioned tried and tested recipes whilst combining them with modern day technology to “recreate and simplify great bakes”. The book proves you do not need a million different ingredients to create masterpieces and shows that baking is not as difficult as some perceive. Melanie is a great believer of all things natural and so her recipes are absent of preservatives, colourings or any other nasty ingredients you have never heard of. She also is an avid believer of taste over appearance and thinks the ethos of aesthetically pleasing cakes only counts if the product tastes exceptional too! Master baker Melanie Andrews is self-taught with over 40 years of experience, 25 of them professional. She has baked many times on TV and has appeared alongside Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood in London.

visit ou parklifesc r website otlan to win a co d.co.uk Melanie A py of ndrew ’s book!

What is your favourite recipe if you had to choose one? If I had to choose a favourite recipe it would most definitely be one containing good quality chocolate. I adore my Nemesis cake in my book and its not for the faint hearted. If I wasn’t allowed to pick the The Nemesis because of favouritism it would have to be my Cranachan cake . This recipe is my own original and has won many awards. It is also the most impressive to look at but the easiest to make - No Cook ,No Bake . It also symbolises everything I love about Scotland in a Cake . Good whisky, Rolled oats , Honey and Perthshire raspberries. Cranachan is a traditional Scottish dessert which I developed into a Cake.

Baking with Melanie Andrews, published by Austin Macauley For more information, visit www.austinmacauley.com

Where did your inspiration come from for this book? The inspiration for my Book was the need for simplicity in modern day cookery books. The market is saturated with cookery and Bakery books by people we have only heard of for 5 minutes. Most books over complicate the art of Baking and there really is no need. My books are designed to look easy and are easy. After trying too many internet recipes by bloggers, Bakers and so called food critics I hadn’t heard of, I decided that the customer deserves to read and use a book by someone who has decades of experience that can be backed up with real honest images that are their own and not found on the Internet search engine.

Do you have any advice for those of us that are not so handy in the kitchen? My advice to those that are not so handy in the kitchen is simple. Set aside time where you have the house to yourself, switch off your mobile phones and relax. Preparation is paramount. There is nothing worse than going to the cupboard and the ingredients you are needing are not there . I have a baking cupboard in my house which is always fully stocked. Also paramount are good recipe books and if possible a good video ( I also provide video tutorials).Sometimes watching somebody baking or cooking can be invaluable to picking up tips. Always read the recipe through first and lay out your ingredients in front of you before starting. Happy Baking! www.parklifescotland.co.uk | 29

FINTRY AMATEUR DRAMATIC SOCIETY are presenting “JOURNEY’S END” by R.C. Sherriff September 26th, 27th, 28th & 29th September 2018. Directed by Jonny North. Jonny North has lived with his family at Boquhan House all his life. He is a very busy businessman but still makes time to devote to participation in F.A.D.S. committee and productions! He is very much a “hands-on” participant and has a great collection of “everything” re props and antiquities. He could in fact, be accused of holding on to the past and has always wanted to direct “Journey’s End”, a play set in the World War One trenches. As this year is the centenary of the end of WW1 it is very fitting that the production should take place in 2018.

We then asked, “what is it about and where can we see it?” He answered, “the play is set in Northern France during WW1 leading up to the battle of St. Quentin, March 1918.Set over the course of four days leading up to a massive German attack on the British Captain Arthur Jewell North M.C. trenches in 1918, Northumberland Fusiliers. “Journey’s End” 1893 - 1918 charts the tension and claustrophobia as the new recruit to the company, Lieutenant Raleigh, discovers that Captain Stanhope, his former childhood friend and hero has changed almost beyond recognition.” R.C.Sherriff served as an officer in WWI and wrote ‘Journey’s End’ ten years after the war ended. You get the impression his writing has been greatly influenced by his experiences. “I wanted to perpetuate the memory of me I had known” His other works include: Goodbye Mr Chips, The Four Feathers, The Invisible Man and the Dam Busters.

Jonny visits his grandfathers grave near Ypres. When he was asked “why this play?” he answered. “I saw this play whilst I was at school and it left a deep impression with me. This will be my first step into the shoes of the director of a play. It’s been my ambition for some time and I always had this play in mind when I thought of my Grandfather who was killed around the same time and whose grave I visited only last year. I feel there will be many in our community who lost family in this dark period in our history and who will want to reflect, on this, the centenary as a mark of respect for what they endured.” 32 |

F.A.D.S. production will take place at The Playground, a converted barn, on Alan Cuthbert’s farm, (a mile along the Fintry road heading from Killearn) this autumn between Wednesday 26th and Saturday 29th September. Tickets will be available from the usual contacts and outlets. Look out for posters with information in your area. We would also like to invite anyone with stories, memories and memorabilia that may be used in a planned exhibition of local peoples past and present of this war that will accompany this production to contact Jean Woodburn --woodbuje@btinternet.com or phone 01360 440 745. It is important to remember those who fought and fell a hundred years on.

Park Life’s

Just some of the many benefits are: • Helps growth and repair of muscle tissue and as we all know the more muscle you have, the more calories you are burning.

Fit for Life BLOG

• Promotes muscle recovery • Provides satiety (keeps you fuller for longer). • Makes hormones & enzymes • Keeps nails and hair healthy There are 9 amino acids the body needs but can’t produce and you get all of these from protein. Our bodies can’t store protein so we need it on a regular basis.

By Liz Ewing Personal Trainer & Sports Therapist

How much protein should you be consuming? Depending on how physically active you are, I would generally advise somewhere between 1.5-2g of protein per kg of body weight.

Are You Eating Enough Protein?

A guidance of 20-30 g of protein in every meal along with a snack containing protein will help you to reach these levels of protein required.

One of the reasons that clients come to me is to lose body fat. To do that, you have to be in a calorie deficit. You need to be burning more calories than you are consuming. Nutrition plays a major role in losing body fat, therefore, I regularly ask clients to keep a food diary and log exactly what they’re eating, this allows us to implement changes to improve it. One thing I always ask clients is “are you eating enough protein”? Protein is an important macronutrient that is a great tool for fat loss.

It is highly likely you are eating enough protein if you are eating 30% plus of your diet as protein. Ideal Protein Sources are chicken, turkey, lean beef, eggs, fish, greek yogurt and milk. Protein supplements such as Whey protein can be helpful if you are struggling to get enough protein into your daily diet.

Unlock Potential with Cellfield Dyslexia Programme

It is believed that dyslexia affects about 10% of the population and, whilst the degree of dyslexia varies widely, in essence being dyslexic means your brain processes things differently from others. These processing difficulties inhibit fluent reading and learning and can have a major impact on school work, eventual job prospects and overall self-esteem.

Some families can struggle to find help if they suspect their child suffers from some degree of dyslexia. The first thing to do is always to consult the child’s school because there are many resources – coupled with good teaching practice – which help. There are also alternative approaches and one of these is conveniently located in Stirling: Cellfield is a powerful programme which helps people overcome dyslexia and similar processing difficulties. Based on neuroscience and brain plasticity research, Cellfield stimulates brain networks to work more efficiently and can help bring about sustainable improvements in reading and language processing. Cellfield is being delivered in Stirling by teacher and former Headteacher,

Fiona Macdiarmid, who also runs the popular Kip McGrath Education Centre in Stirling. She is passionate about Cellfield and the impact it can have: “Cellfield really can be life changing for people”, she explains “this is because, in addition to improvement in reading and language, clients also feel it has a positive impact on their overall self esteem”. To find out more contact Cellfield on 01786 447527. www.cellfield.co.uk

Volunteers go House to House for CRUK.

Local committee members and a host of volunteers will be collecting donations House to House for Cancer Research from 16 to 22 April 2018. Last year’s collection realised more than £11,000 which makes a tremendous contribution to the organisation’s vital work. CRUK receives no government funding and relies totally on the public’s generosity - all donations, however small, are greatly appreciated. Although the committee has a number of collecting volunteers, more are always needed ......if you could spare just a few hours and would like to help please call the committee chairperson, Janet Rutherford on 01360 449214. The Commitee hopes that area residents will give as generously this year as they have in the past.

Your Local Solicitor Spring clean your legal affairs!!

Is it time to put a Will in place, or review your existing Will? A Will can save your loved ones a lot of time, stress and money, and ensure your wishes are carried out after your death. Maybe you are considering granting a Power of Attorney to enable someone you trust to manage financial and/or welfare matters if you become unable to deal with them yourself due to failing or ill health. It is crucial that a Power of Attorney is put in place while you still have mental capacity. What about the title deeds to your house? Are you the joint owner of a property, is there a survivorship clause in the title? This is a crucial point with regards to estate planning. Your existing mortgage may have been repaid, but has it been removed from the title? Perhaps you are concerned about what will happen to your assets should you go into care and what will be left for your family? Suzie Falconer of Walker Laird is a solicitor living in your area who is able to help with these and many more legal matters. She is available for out-of-hours or home appointments, first consultations are free and there is no charge if you decide not to proceed. Contact Suzie on 0141 847 4946 or email suzie.falconer@walkerlaird.co.uk to find out more.

Park Life Interview

with Kenny Stewart

of Scotia Contracts Your business has expanded over the last few years, what new contract work are you undertaking? Over the last few years the company has become more involved with larger ground works and construction projects in and around the national park area. It was a natural move as we have the kit and the know how to carry out these larger projects. On the groundworks side we have carried out road and bridge construction, land drainage and concrete foundations for house building, garages and extensions and outbuildings. On the building side we have been involved in re modelling homes to create new rooms within the existing property along with the construction of both timber and traditional built garages and garden rooms.

Do you prefer the building or landscaping work? Ultimately the landscaping is the bread and butter of the business but I do enjoy the challenges that the building and groundworks brings to the business. It’s great to see the transformation from an existing building to the remodelling , or the construction of a new extension or building that will be there for years to come. Whether its landscaping or building you always leave site with the knowledge that you have a happy client and have delivered on their original concept.

What is the most unusual landscaping job you have been asked to do? We have carried out a lot of various landscaping projects over the years including turfing , drainage decking etc. but one client we had was a very keen golfer. His remit was to build a private putting green in has garden. There was a slope within the garden as well so he could practice his long , uphill puts. The specification of the green matched that of any professional course with a full drainage system, USGA spec rootzone for the grass to grow on and a fully automatic irrigation system. It was a great project to do. I’m not sure if it helped his short game though. There’s some things I can’t help with!

Where do you see your business in a years time? Continue to have satisfied clients! Hopefully getting involved with more groundworks and development projects for homes and businesses within the local area. At the moment we are involved with some clients to create the infrastructure and construction of holiday cabins which covers all the groundwork, construction and landscaping requirements that we carry out so hopefully we can grow this side of the business.

GARDENING

TIPS from the team at Fraser C. Robb

With Spring just around the corner it’s time to plan for the first gardening session of the season. To help you on the way here are some top tips from the team at Fraser C Robb. A month or so in advance of the first cut it’s sensible to start up your lawnmower to check that it starts successfully. If there are any problems you can book it in with us for a service. We’ll give the machine a full check over, sharpen and balance the blade, change the oil and fully service the engine. Before you start using your lawnmower, first walk over the grass area and remove any stones that may have got there. These can damage the blade of your mower, so it is well worth checking before the first cut of the season. In Spring rake your lawn and lightly scarify (a more heavier scarifying takes place in the autumn). Apply moss killer 7-10 days in advance of scarification. Spring is also a good time for pruning of hedges, ahead of a more major cut in the summer months. Whenever using garden equipment ensure that you are wearing the correct protective clothing. Each year we organise a free chainsaw training day, that covers safety procedures. We can advise anytime about safety and can notify you of the next scheduled training day. If you’re looking for more advice, or to replace any item of garden equipment, let us help you. Call in at our showroom, just outside Drymen and we’ll be happy to help you.

Community Champions make huge impact at the Community Partnership Gathering! On Saturday the 4th November, at The Millennium Hall in Gartocharn, communities from in and around Loch Lomond and the Trossachs park area gathered together to celebrate the achievements of the real stars and community groups who have made a huge impact and contributed greatly to the development and enhancement of their communities. The Community Champion awards were part of this year’s Community Partnership Gathering programme ‘Heritage; sharing experience, creating legacy’; a daytime community event designed to inspire and develop collaborations around heritage across the park area. This year’s awards were broken down into four categories: The first Volunteer of the Year award went to one green fingered Drymen

resident Marina Brennan, who was nominated by Drymen Community Council. Marina has lived in Drymen since she was a child and when the Village in Bloom committee was formed many years ago Marina was ready to get to work. Marina is expert in her ability to plan and display the many tubs and containers in and around the village and she has a team helping her at the busiest times, sourcing different bodies and grant giving departments. She is a very community spirited person and loves village life. The community has benefited enormously from the time and efforts that Marina gives freely to making their village a very attractive and pleasant environment not only for residents but also for the many hundreds of tourist visiting the area”

Other nominations for this award received a highly commended; James Kennedy (representing the Strathard Community Trust and Strathard Heritage Network), Louis Stott (from Strathard for his lifelong contribution to local heritage) and Moira Tester (representing ‘Shore Sweepers’ from Benmore & Kilmun). The winner of this year’s Rising Champion award was nominated by the Callander Resilience Group, a sub-group of Callander Community Development Trust to recognise one outstanding Callander resident. Louise Corrieri who was responsible for initiating and organising significant and urgent fund-raising activities in response to two major fires in Callander and Balquhidder in May last year was met with amazing success. Using social media,

Hub’ in Benmore & Kilmun). The final award Young Volunteer of the year went to one young man from West Dunbartonshire in recognition of his commitment to supporting his community.

Louise started fund-raising appeal/ activities to help people in hardship or homelessness resulting from these two serious fires. She organised fundraising buckets, tombola, jumble sale for items remaining, followed by collection of unwanted clothes in exchange for payment or collection by other charities. Local businesses donated high value gifts, which were auctioned raising more funds via a Just Giving page. From these activities, Louise raised over £12.5k providing food, clothing, replacement furniture and household goods for fire victims. These acts of kindness and generosity have had a big impact on the Callander Resilience Group, resulting in a revision of their local emergency plans in the event of a fire. The Trust confirmed that “Without Louise’s amazing efforts these people would not be in the position they are today!” Community Organisation of the year received four great nominations from several community interest groups who have shown innovation, commitment and a positive

approach to improving life for those who live in, work in or who visit their community. The nomination that swayed the judges came from Strathard Initiative partners SEPA and Forest Enterprise Scotland who have been working closely with this year’s winners; The Strathard Community Trust and the newly formed Strathard Heritage Network. At the helm of the Trust is Katinka Dalglish, and James Kennedy for the Heritage Network who have both helped to reinvigorate community action and drive forward priorities in their new Strathard Community Action Plan. The Strathard Heritage Network is leading on a project call ‘Robert Kirk revisited’ and they are keen to make a link with other groups. To find out more about the Trust and Network and all their latest projects visit www. strathardct.org.uk. Jonathan Rainey has been and remains on an environmental mission through social media and local action, to raise public awareness around littering and the disposal of waste material. Jonathan’s campaign includes picking litter from Overtoun Estate Woods, the beach beside Levengrove Park and he is currently assisting the council part-time in Fisher Woods, Balloch. He posts the results from his litter picks using hashtags #CleanUpOvertounWoods #CleanUpLevengrovePark #Litterati and more recently #CleanUpBalloch to highlight just how much public waste and litter is discarded. Jonathan who has high-functioning autism has come on leaps and bounds through his passion to clean up our environment, and runs a blog called ‘The Young (Autistic) Litter Picker” and posts regular videos on YouTube. If you share Jonathan’s concern for litter then follow him on Twitter @ JonathanR1994 to find out more! We only use Lithomex to re- face the sandstone and all pointing is only carried out with a lime mix. Stone windowsills add Old-World charm to many buildings. If sills are sandstone, the stone tends to deteriorate with age, exposure to rain, snow and freeze-and- thaw cycles.

EPDM Roofing System EPDM is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) widely used in low-slope buildings in the United States and worldwide. Its two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, are derived from oil and natural gas. EPDM is available in both black and white, and is sold a broad variety of widths, ranging from 7.S feet to fifty feet, and in two thicknesses, 45 and 60 mils. EPDM can be installed either fullv adhered. mech1nicallv attached or ballasted, with the seams of the roofing system sealed with liquid adhesives or specially formulated tape.

Park Life asks Microcroft for Internet safety advice When the news broke at the end of last year that several high street banks were to close local branches, I didn’t immediately realise the impact this would have on rural areas, and indeed how many people still use branches from most or all of their banking requirements. I have run my own rural business for over 13 years, during that time I have slowly moved from branch banking to online. The thing is, quite a lot of my customers haven’t. It seems the main concern I often hear is a worry about security. What if someone hacks in to my computer? I must concede, with nearly weekly reports of viruses and hackers, I can understand the concerns.

So how safe is internet banking?

I suppose the main argument for banking online would be - if it isn’t safe, why are so many people doing it? In my experience, I’ve only once come across a case where a spoof phone call talked their way on to a computer and actually managed to get in to the banking and attempt to withdraw funds. The bank spotted the irregular payment and blocked it before the money had left the account. For every other home and small business that I’m aware of, they don’t seem to hit any problems.

How I can help.

If you are unsure of online banking and how secure it actually is, I would be happy to look at your computer or tablet/phone and check the security etc. I can also help you set-up online banking for you with the help of your bank; make it as easy as possible to access it. I can also advise on how to avoid scams and phishing Emails. I have found online banking safe, secure, easy to use and very convenient. With the way things are going, I think it is worth considering getting it set-up, if you find getting to the local branch a problem.
