A legend in the Trossachs... still faithfully working in its 116th year!
As the stories of Rob Roy MacGregor’s exploits in the 17th Century became well known across the country, the status of the outlaw and folk hero from The Trossachs as a Scottish legend was confirmed, and his homeland in the hills around Loch Katrine came to attract artists, writers, and visitors who wanted to experience and enjoy for themselves this special part of the world. Of course it was those intrepid Victorian travellers who really put the Trossachs on the map – as they made their way to Loch Katrine (a journey made by Queen Victoria herself on the occasion of her visit in 1859), and set out for the journey to Stronachlachar on the venerable steamship ‘Rob Roy 2’ – proudly named after the ‘local hero’. It was at the turn of the century however when another chapter in the story of the area was created, as the steamship Sir Walter Scott entered service on Loch Katrine and started on its own journey, one that would see it become a legend in its own right. 116 years later the experience of setting sail on the steamer from Katrine Pier is every bit as enchanting as it was in those early days, and the timeless sense of expectation as the Sir Walter Scott slips away from its moorings to start yet another journey never seems to diminish. For some of the passengers this will be the start of a family cycling expedition, or a day to be spent walking in the hills, for others it will be an opportunity to capture the splendour of the Trossachs in photographs, and simply enjoy the majesty of the landscape. For many visitors their day out starts as the Sir Walter Scott leaves the Trossachs Pier at 10.30am, and on arrival at Stronachlachar passengers can choose to disembark and return by bicycle along the road which follows the northern shore of the loch or stay onboard for the return sailing, arriving back again at 12.30pm, just in time for lunch. In the afternoon there is another chance for passengers to sample the delights of travelling by steam, with a choice of shorter 1-hour cruises. With admirers and followers at home and abroad, the
Sir Walter Scott has been lovingly maintained, restored and refurbished over the years, so for today’s visitors the special atmosphere of a Victorian pleasure steamer comes along with totally up-to-date facilities and services. These include comfortable lounges with panoramic views which allow passengers to relax and admire the passing scenery, and a kiosk serving refreshments to enjoy during the cruise. Sailing alongside the steamship again in 2016 is the modern cruiser ‘Lady of the Lake’, with its own programme of departures including the special ‘Legends of the Loch’ cruise (departing at 1.30pm and at 4.15pm from 27th May to 2nd October), which introduces visitors to some of the other notable visitors associated with Loch Katrine through the generations, including Sir Walter Scott himself, and tells the story of the water supply system opened by Queen Victoria (and which still sends 50 million gallons of water each day to 700,000 people in the greater Glasgow area). Loch Katrine is the starting point for so many different experiences – from walking by the loch shore, through to family cycling expeditions, and of course the opportunity to enjoy a sail on the legendary steamship Sir Walter Scott (or the modern cruiser Lady of the Lake). This really is the best way to enjoy the stunning scenery which was shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago, and to discover the story of how the loch itself has supplied Glasgow’s tap water since the middle of the 19th century. Look out for ospreys and otters, and see if you can spot the wild goats on the shore during your cruise! Sailings depart from Trossachs Pier, which is easy to reach from all across Central Scotland, and where visitor facilities include The Brenachoile Café Bar and Restaurant. Details of all sailing times are available at www.parklifescotland.co.uk | 15 www.lochkatrine.com.

Park Life | Spotlight on Callander
There is a real buzz about Callander for 2016! In the 10 years that Parklife Magazine has covered the Callander area, there have been ups & downs, old businesses closing and new businesses setting up , like many other popular tourist destinations in Scotland. Parklife is delighted to hear the fantastic news that, where 9 shop units lay vacant between the end of 2015 and early 2016, only two premises are now unoccupied and even they are expected to be snapped up shortly. There is a real buzz about the place which is drawing in more business
interest and significantly greater numbers of tourists and shoppers all attracted by the constantly improving town centre experience. Much of this turnaround is down to the enthusiasm and hard work of local business owners who recognise the connection between a thriving high street and the tourist coach parties and holiday visitors as well as providing attractive services for local people. It takes a huge effort from the whole community to create and maintain a viable year round tourist destination. Many practical and creative solutions
have improved the area – on the practical side, the local community and business owners convinced Stirling Council to allow free parking to coach companies, the success of which will be reviewed after the busy summer season. A more unusual boost to tourism is coming through The Clanranald Trust’s move to Callander and their association with the TV epic series Outlander. Parklife looks forward to working with the wide variety of Callander businesses and seeing the current successes continuing over the next 10 years. www.destinationcallander.co.uk

Park Life Interview
with Dawn Haldane of Feeds & Stoves/Tartan Timber/Tartan Stoves
Dawn Haldane and her husband, Davie, started up Tartan Timber in 1999. Initially it was a timber haulage firm but alongside this they ran a small firewood business. In 2011, after diesel and repairs costs increased they made the decision to sell their lorry and concentrate solely on firewood sales. The business has expanded further and now offers stove sales, installation, maintenance and accessories, chimney sweeping and animal feeds supplements all under one roof in a new highstreet shop in Callander.
What services do you now offer? We have diversified over the past 5 years to provide an all year round service for our customers. With the last couple of years of traditional wet summer weather we invested in a purpose built biomass kiln to dry all our timber. Our customers can now buy firewood & kindling, with confidence, knowing that it will be delivered perfectly dry and ready to burn. Our kiln dried firewood is also perfect for domestic biomass boilers as we are BSL accredited. We can design and install solid /multi fuel stoves and Davie is a fully qualified chimney sweep registered with the Institute of Chimney Sweeps. Every year you should get your fuel appliance swept and we provide a certificate after every sweep, which some insurance companies now ask for. 26 |
www.parklifescotland.co.uk
Your company has branched out a lot over the last few years, what are your plans for the Callander shop? This year I hurt my back so I decided to combine all our businesses alongside my animal feed business and open up a shop. We found it quite hard to think of a name and in the end went for something very simple “Feeds & Stoves“ We drafted in D Signs of Stirling to produce our new shop sign and they made a brilliant job. We can now supply a wide range of stoves – Hobbit, Firefox, Tiger, Aga, Charnwood to name a few and these can be viewed in our showroom. Within the shop you can also order any replacement glass or spare parts for your stove/open fire and view our range of baskets and companion sets. I have extended my animal feed range to include everything from hamsters to horses!
What are the plans for 2016? Our future plans for 2016 include a dog grooming & bathing service within the shop, a collection point for wash & repair horse rugs and clipper blade sharpening.

Park Life Interview with Dale & Vicky McQueen of McQueen Gin Callander
Dale comes from a technical engineering background, a Graduate of Herriot Watt University with 42 years experience in engineering and sales, during which he took a year out to run a pub/restaurant with his wife Vicky.
Dale – I was looking for a change in lifestyle from corporate life and have always been interested in the science of distilling. Gin was an opportunity to move into a growing market and create something unique and Scottish.
Vicky draws her experience in catering from an early age working in the family café and has extensive knowledge in catering from running a gluten-free restaurant to being supplier to Chatsworth with glutenfree Bakewell pies. Due to illness she was forced to retire early, but still enjoys cooking and baking for friends, family and charity events. Vicky has been key to choosing the right botanicals to make the gin.
What is unique about your gin?
It is completely innovative in terms of the gin flavours and packaging, we distill the flavour into the gin during the process and the flavours are SMOKEY CHILLI world first. We will launch with four flavours – Smokey Chilli, Chocolate Mint, Sweet Citrus and Mocha – all of which taste great on their own or CHOCOLATE in a gin &MINT tonic or cocktail.
What inspired you to go into the Gin making business?

Chris Martin named as a Finalist In Scottish Charity Awards Chris Martin, Managing Director of Callander Youth Project Trust is in the running for a 2016 Scottish Charity Award. Organised by Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO), the Awards, which are free to enter, celebrate the life-changing work of charities, community groups and individuals dedicated to making Scotland a better place to live. When asked for a comment, Chris said “I am both humbled and delighted to be shortlisted for the category of Exceptional Employee. I am happy to work tirelessly in my role as I am a strong advocate of the fact that ‘Youth Work Changes Lives’ and, as a product of good quality youth work myself, I am keen to facilitate opportunities for young people to engage with rural youth work services.
Martin Sime, Chief Executive, SCVO, said: “Year after year Scottish charities and voluntary organisations prove themselves to be beacons for creativity, tenacity and innovation. This year’s Scottish Charity Awards finalists demonstrate these qualities in abundance and are shining examples of how people can work together to make Scotland a better place.” All shortlisted entries will also compete for the People’s Choice Award which will be decided by the public via online voting. Callander Youth Project Trust is an independent, voluntary youth organisation, delivering a wide range of key services for over 100 young
people up to the age of 25 in the 400 square miles of rural surrounding area. These services include community youth clubs, job clubs, holiday activity programmes, art sessions, as well as health and sport initiatives. The charity also delivers a dedicated support project at the local secondary school, and bespoke employability support for young people who have left school and are looking for work. They have taken a hugely entrepreneurial and innovative approach in raising money to become self-financing, in order to create opportunities for young people. It was for this that CYPT deservedly became the overall winners of YouthLink Scotland’s 8th National Youth Worker of the Year Awards in Edinburgh last year. The addition of a social enterprise wing for CYPT has not happened overnight. Inspiring Scotland invested over £1M in the project through their 14:19 Fund seven years ago. CYPT were encouraged to
be entrepreneurial in their approach and create a legacy as well as form a self-sustaining youth project. They bought a failing pub/hotel business from Punch Taverns in 2011 and set about developing an infrastructure, firstly within the staff team and secondly within the physical building. In 2013 CYPT were able to open their popular Bridgend Café, where produce is locally sourced. Many of the vegetables and herbs used are grown in CYPT’s own garden! Through investment from Triodos, Social Investment Scotland, and FVL LEADER, CYPT were then able to upgrade the building to a 5 star standard, awarded by Visit Scotland in November 2014. The staff team continued delivery of their core youth work services throughout the physical renovations, showing that young people are at the heart of everything they do and are critical to the on-going success of their award-winning organisation. CYPT have mapped their provision across the Employability Pipeline: They work with young people who are furthest removed from the labour market through Activity Agreement provision. Furthermore, volunteering opportunities are offered throughout the social enterprise activity. CYPT have accessed the Community Jobs Scotland scheme and offer placements in the Bridgend Café and Callander Hostel. After the young people have graduated the CJS programme they are offer Modern Apprenticeships in Business & Administration; Youth Work as well as Hospitality, Supervision and Leadership pitched at a level that | 33 www.parklifescotland.co.uk is bespoke to the learner.

FRASER C ROBB CUSTOMERS SUPPORT STRATHCARRON HOSPICE “First customer to haggle upwards in over 40 years of being in business!” Fraser C Robb were recently approached by customers Alan and Eilidh Gilmour, from Aberfoyle. They had an Argo off road vehicle which they no longer needed and were keen to get it fully operational to sell and raise money for Strathcarron Hospice. Fraser C Robb got the machine ready and even found a buyer. When the buyer, Grant Simpson discovered that the proceeds were going to this good cause he upped the price from £2,200 to £2,500. All of this money has gone to help the hospice, who need £10,000 a day to provide their specialist palliative care services. Fraser Robb says ‘We were very pleased to assist, and to see money go to this special charity. I think that Grant may be the first customer to haggle upwards in over 40 years of being in business! You can understand why though Strathcarron Hospice is a very good cause. Strathcarron Hospice supported Eilidh’s daughter Laura Leven and her two sons offering incredible specialist care and comfort.

Last year we decided to exhibit at the Ideal home show at the SECC, Glasgow which proved a great success so we decided to exhibit there again this year. This has allowed us to develop into different markets and has brought some great projects including creating a small garden for a hotel to allow the wedding parties to have their photographs taken in beautiful surroundings. property which saw the demolition and restructuring of 3 rooms into one to create a large open plan kitchen/ dining/living space with views out onto a new large patio and landscaped area. The diary is starting to fill up which is a great feeling with work programmed for late summer . We continue to be flexible with client needs whilst still carrying out our core services such as drainage, landscaping and groundworks and continue to offer quality services and value for money.
after
This project was run by ourselves and involved demolition of internal wall to turn 3 rooms into one big living room/kitchen diner. Also the demolition of external walls whilst providing structural support then installation of steel beam. We then re- insulated and plastered the interior of the house, installed large sliding window (Installed by a joiner) and laid new hardwood flooring and tiles and installed new wood burning stove.

Now open at the kiosk on Luss Pier St Mocha, the coffee shop and ice cream parlour opened in Balmaha by The Oak Tree Inn has just celebrated its second birthday. Another milestone has also been reached, with the serving of its 100,000th scoop of ice cream. The Fraser family opened the coffee shop in Balmaha to offer visitors a quality experience, including artisanroasted coffee. Brothers Stuart and David Fraser developed the brand and building, Stuart also created ‘Loch Lomond Luxury’ - Loch Lomond’s first and only authentic ice cream range.
Now after the success of St Mocha in Balmaha, the brothers are seeking new outlets for it around Loch Lomond, with the next now open at the kiosk on Luss Pier. Stuart explains ‘we are delighted to expand St Mocha to new locations around the loch side. The kiosk on Luss Pier is a very exciting opportunity, in an iconic setting. We will literally be bringing St Mocha Coffee and Loch Lomond Luxury Ice Cream by boat across the water’.

Park Life Interview
with Paul and Sirin Wood of Hewitt & Aker What prompted you and Paul to step into the world Fine Food and Wine of Fine Food and Wine?
Due to the nature of our business, extensive travel took us all over the world, and the biggest joy has always been indulging in our love of food wherever business travels took us, even planning holidays and days out centred around where to eat! It has been an unspoken ambition of us both, to get involved in “something to do with food & drink“, it was only at the beginning of 2016, that a viable opportunity presented itself, in form of an ideal property becoming available in Killearn, namely the Old Mill Gift Shop.
Paul & Sirin Wood, from Leeds & Istanbul respectively, met whilst working in the Clothing Industry. Having worked and lived in London previously, a business related relocation brought them to Buchlyvie in 1996. In 2000 they set up their own apparel sourcing business, and since the birth of their daughter Alexandra in 2006, have been in search of a more locally centred and better work life balance (it has only taken ten years!)
From there the idea was born. Both being huge devotees of cheese, charcuterie, good bread and good wine, and always having had to travel a distance to get good quality produce, it was immediately obvious, which kind of store we wanted to put together. The product range we will be offering is focused on provenance and quality, as well as finding the best products both locally & Internationally, as we are both fully aware of the most important fact: we are only going to be as good as our produce. A wide variety of cheese, charcuterie, breads & bakery, wine and craft ales, chocolates, deli classics such as olives, pickles and other dips, will be offered as well as a carefully selected collection of condiments. Bespoke cheese & charcuterie boards will be offered for dinner parties, entertaining etc. The tea and coffee offering is concentrated on specialised, single origin produce, introducing our long standing personal favourites, Dammann teas and Julius Meinl coffees, as well as one of the pioneers of direct coffee business Johan & Nystrom.

Will you be using some local suppliers? We are working closely with amazing local producers such as Kember & Jones of Glasgow, and Mhor Bread of Callander, St Andrew’s Farm, Loch Inverawe for smoked salmon, Fallen Brewery, Fyne Ales, Glengoyne Distilery, Skinners of Kippen Butchers, as well as amazing British Charcuterie Producers Beal’s Farm. Our continental Charcuterie offering is also being sourced directly where we can from high quality Spanish, Austrian & French producers.
Our biggest ambition is to provide a high quality service to our local area and be a first stop for good quality everyday items. We hope to work together with our local neighbours such as The Old Mill Pub and the Three Sisters Bake, and contribute to Killearn becoming a Centre of Excellence & Destination point for food & drink.
Paul is working hard in putting together an eclectic and wide ranging wine selection to offer an alternative to every taste and budget , and again reflect on our ambition of being an everyday destination and not just for a “treat”. We plan to hold regular wine tastings together with cheese, and other name and Logo Font seasonal produce. Take away sandwiches and coffee will be an important part of our services.

Park Life Interview
with Abbé Farrell, Gartmore Village Hall Coordinator Gartmore Village Hall is now entering its third year since its major refurbishment was completed in 2014, and is proving to be a very popular venue for all sorts of events large and small! In the last year footfall has risen to over 14,500 visitors, with over 60 different groups using the hall for fitness classes, theatre groups, horticulture and much more. Abbé Farrell is their newly appointed Coordinator, and with her wide range of experience in Marketing and Events, she is looking forward to coordinating a range of event bookings and promoting the Hall further for community use and external events. She tells us a little bit more about the Hall and what we can look out for in the future. “Gartmore Village Hall is first and foremost a community venue. We aim to cater for all with classes ranging from Pilates to Circuit training, Parent and Toddler groups, Community Cinema and various theatrical productions. The Hall is a fantastic entertainment venue, enjoyed by locals and music fans from all over Scotland. Lots of people have attended a variety of gigs, with acts such as Skerryvore, James Grant, Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham gracing our stage. It’s a fabulous venue!” “The Hall is a great asset to the community, and we continue to attract

users locally and from further afield in order to cover our running costs and ensure that the Hall is around for future generations to enjoy. This year we plan to promote corporate events and business meetings both small
weddings and other celebrations. We have an attractive south-facing Garden Room, with direct access to the outside grounds adjacent to the Main Hall, with several meeting rooms of various sizes also available
and large. With our newly installed free Wi-Fi, projection equipment and refreshment facilities available in each meeting room, it’s the perfect place to hold conferences, team building days and meetings – within the beautiful surroundings of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. It also makes the perfect venue for functions too. The venue comprises a very large Main Hall, which can seat 220, theatre style for an event on stage, and 130 seated for a meal such as Burns Suppers or
to hire… along with a well equipped kitchen and bar area, and a fantastic view too!” “Above all Gartmore Village Hall continues to be at the heart of the community, and we really look forward to seeing old faces and new enjoy the facilities it has to offer. Park Life Interview with Ross Anderson of Andrew Anderson & Sons Funeral Directors How long has your business been running? Andrew Anderson & Sons Funeral Directors have been in business since 1969. What’s the most important thing to remember when organising a funera? At Andrew Anderson & Sons the bereaved family always comes first. We strive to put their minds at ease and do everything in our upmost power to make sure that they have all their wishes for their loved one put into fruition. Our job is to take away as much of the stress as possible and do everything we can to help them at their most challenging time. They put their trust in us to take care of every detail and know we are looking after their loved one until they are laid to rest. With times changing are you able to cater for the many different funeral requests? We have always had a “can do” attitude. Our aim is to always give the client exactly what they ask for no matter how big or small. This sometimes can mean thinking outside the box or gaining help from outside sources. It can be challenging at times but always very rewarding.
Andrew Anderson & Sons Funeral Directors Est. 1969 We are proud to offer a 24 hour caring and professional service to the local community We are pleased to offer Golden Charter Pre-Paid Funeral Plans “Creating peace of mind for you and your family” A wide range of memorial stones are available. We can also clean and add further inscription to existing family memorials. For all enquiries Callander Tel: 01877 330398 • Balfron Tel: 01360 441023
