A Christmas Message from Rev. George Mackay at Broomhill and Hyndland Linked Churches “What team,” I asked the children, ‘does God support?” They looked at me in a strange way and then came out with answers like St Mirren because they used to play at Love Street. Then there was the cynical comment about it being a ‘big’ team because they always got the decisions. “It’s not Hearts is it?” they groaned, knowing my loyalty to the Edinburgh club. After delaying long enough, I took out the scarf and they got the message. Why do people follow the
West End Life Magazine
Christian faith? Why are pews in churches filled on Christmas Eve with those gathered wishing to sing those good old carols that remind them of Christmas long ago ? Why do we mark the birth of a child, this child in the world? It’s about love from a God who realises that the only way for any relationship to work, we have to do it together. That’s what makes the Good News – God born in our world as one of us. Join us at Broomhill and Hyndland and may you re-kindle that flame, a flame that has never been extinguished, of a God who loves you and meets you and I in our terms. Oh, and the team? God and Man United of course !! All welcome to join the festive services at Broomhill and Hyndland Churches:

How to Avoid a New Year Debt Hangover In this issue our editor Charles Briggs looks at simple, common-sense strategies on how to deal with Christmas spending as this can easily be a challenging time. Often our New Year financial plans are thrown into turmoil simply because of the fall out of excessive Christmas spending. Christmas has a strange ability to stretch us to our limits - our sanity, our time and especially our money. The best way to make sure you don’t start out the New Year with a mountain of holiday debt is to start planning. What should come as no surprise are your spending totals–meaning don’t get so caught up with shopping fever that you spend without thinking and end up wondering where all the money went. Just as you make a budget for your monthly expenses, you should also make a spending plan for your holiday expenses. The reason for a special budget is simple. It’s easy for your spending to get away from you when you have so many shops waving signs in front of your face that say “30% off” or “Christmas sale.” The temptation to make an impulse purchase can get to you. Your budget will keep you focused so you know when the spending needs to stop. If it doesn’t, you’ll pay for this Christmas until next Halloween. Plus, if you use credit cards and have no budget, your spend can quickly get out of control. Add in the interest when the bill doesn’t get paid on time, and Christmas could end up very expensive indeed. No “sale” or “special offer” is worth busting your budget over, so before each shopping trip, determine who you are going out to buy for and take only cash to get the gifts. Once you’re done, return home. It will help to keep the joy in your holidays and the stress out.
6 | West End Life – December/January 2014
Our Christmas Budget Tips Before You Start
1. Stay Calm: Don’t get too caught up in the buying frenzy or fall for marketing tactics retailers use to get you to spend more. Avoid advertisements and try not to compare your holiday spending habits with others’. Just stay focused on your own budget. 2. Start Early: You can save on gift-giving by starting now. This will give you plenty of time to wait for the right deal, make sure items will be shipped and received on time. Getting an early start will cut down on stress, too! 3. Avoid Paying on Credit: It might be a good strategy to charge holiday gifts to your credit card to earn points, but make sure you don’t spend more than you can pay off right away. Getting hit with credit card interest could make your Christmas purchases 15-20% higher.
Smart Shopping
4. Shop With a List: Whether you’re shopping for food or gifts for the family or friends, go with a list in hand to avoid buying unnecessary items and going over budget. 5. Bundle Online Orders: This will save on shipping, and ordering all at once could help you reach the larger spending limits that often come with larger savings (such as £10 off £100, for example).
Gift Giving
6. Set-Up a Secret Santa: For big groups, such as family or colleagues, a Secret Santa gift exchange can be a great way to make sure everyone gets a gift, without breaking the bank. 7. Send an E-card: Paying for Christmas cards, a family photo and the postage can really add up. Skip the snail mail and opt for an electronic greeting.

Get Ready for Winter Motoring Getting your car ready for winter is vital. Take the car down to your local garage and get them to have a look at the underside. The exhaust should appear to be in good condition. If the exhaust appears to be just about to go, have it replaced before it lets you down at the wrong time. Whilst you are there get your tyres looked at. Areas of uneven wear, cracked sidewalls, or nails stuck in the tread, should all be fixed. Ensure there is enough tread to meet more than the legal minimum,

if not, get the tyre replaced. It is essential you have four good tyres to cope with winter road conditions and don’t forget the spare! The secret of safe, and efficient motoring lies in good, regular servicing. Which means your car should cope with the winter ahead. Regular Winter Checks Battery - Cold starting in winter takes a fair amount of charge. Only a good battery can cope. Keep the terminals well-greased to stop corrosion and keep the charge flowing. Radiator - Check the fluid level on a regular basis. Top it up as required with an anti-freeze and water mix. Lights - Keep the lights at the front and back clean. You want to see and to be seen when it’s dark. Windscreens and wipers - Keep the washers topped-up with a good quality fluid. Water is not enough - it will freeze in cold conditions. Examine the wiper blades regularly, they must work efficiently to be effective. Tyres - Check the pressures every week. They are all that rest between you and the road. Unless they are right, your brakes won’t function correctly, your steering will be less efficient and your car’s road holding will be impaired.

I’m ready for winter this year By Ellen Arnison
It catches me out every time – the first frost of the year. I’m ready to leap into the car to get smallest son to nursery when I realise I can’t see a thing and I’ve no flipping idea where the de-icer is. Later that day the news reports the first few cases of thefts of cars warming up in the drive and I know I’m not alone. This year, though, I’ve decided to get ready for winter – with its cold snaps and nasty rounds of colds and flu.
Here’s what I plan to do: ■ Make sure my home is as cosy as possible with
warm curtains and lagged pipes.
■ Make sure we have the following essentials and
that I know where they are: a torch and spare batteries, a radio and spare batteries, essential medication and a first aid kit, a stash of bottled water and ready-to-eat food, copies of important documents, pencil, paper, penknife whistle and spare keys to house and car.
■ Restock the medicine cabinet with cold
remedies and painkillers.
■ Make sure we’ve got enough of the medicines
that we need on repeat prescription.
■ Take a note of when the GP
■ Pack an emergency kit for the car – just in
case – that will include a torch, water and warm clothes, a blanket, a reflective warning sign and a shovel.
■ Make a note of emergency phone numbers,
doctors, schools etc – and keep a list at home and on my mobile.
surgery is closed.
■ Finding the snow
shovel and getting some grit and salt.

Mon£y Saving Tips T h is In previous articles I have discussed the macroeconomic impacts on our finances, whether it be the referendum, rising house prices or falling unemployment. In this article I’d like to continue the themes developed last time about the small behavioural changes we can make that can save cash. Regularly review the costs of our monthly overheads Like any company, we as individuals should get used to regularly reviewing the costs of the
services we buy. Home and car insurance are regular offenders for keeping their most attractive deals for new customers and punishing existing customers for their inertia. Overpay your mortgage Not strictly a money saving technique, of course, however, in the longer term, the amounts that can be saved are staggering. On a £125,000 mortgage taken out over 25 years, paying an overpayment of £100 per month would mean the mortgage is repaid five years early and over £14,000 saved over the course of the mortgage. Mobile Phones The number of tariffs available for mobile phones is bewildering. However, there’s plenty of free advice online about what constitutes a good tariff and a bad

tariff. Also, if you’re on a monthly contract, check whether it has expired. If you’re happy with your existing phone, change to a SIM only deal. Equally, if you’re thinking about upgrading, work out whether you can buy the phone outwith the contract. Depending on usage, it might be cheaper to stay on a SIM only deal and buy the phone directly from the supplier.
There are plenty of other money saving tips available, and with Christmas just around the corner, hopefully the tips included here and those available online, will jog all our memories in January when the credit card bills come rolling in! Overcoming Dyslexia and Language Processing difficulties If your child’s reading and writing is not progressing at the rate you expect, it may be he/she is dyslexic.
Cellfield gives hope and success to local children
Kirstie Price Director of Cellfield for Glasgow North and West
Cellfield is an innovative, intervention for dyslexia and other reading and language difficulties. There are other approaches that help address reading difficulties but what differentiates Cellfield is that it has identified the critical functions in the brain necessary for normal reading with fluency and comprehension. Cellfield is a computerbased multisensory approach, which targets these brain functions and helps children overcome language processing difficulties.
Comments from Parents “We think of Cellfield as our long awaited miracle. It opened the gate and introduced our 10 year old son to the literary world. His confidence in dealing with language based maths problems and English comprehension is coming on leaps and bounds. “Cellfield for us has been amazing. Before the programme our daughter found reading exhausting and instead of enjoying a book she viewed it very much as a chore. The change is just unbelievable. Not only has our daughter found enjoyment in reading, her speed and fluency has also improved enormously.

Pear Tarte Tatin or upside down tart You can use apples or pears for this recipe. I prefer pears straight from the garden. The best pears for this dish are Comice, they are firm when ripe and hold their shape when cooked. The also grow well in Scotland. Serves 4 2 large pears (or 4 small) 140g butter 140g caser sugar 1 star anise 1 vanilla pod 1 cardamom pod ½ cinnamon stick Splash of brandy (optional) 300g butter puff pastry Method 1. Peel and half the pears length ways and using a tea spoon remove the core. 2. In a thick based pot add the sugar, butter and all spices and gently heat until it starts to colour. 3. Add pears, carefully, with the rounded side down. 4. When the pears have a little colour and the caramel is the colour of toffee. Add a splash of brandy sauce remove from heat. 5. Carefully remove pears and place them round side down into 10 cm individual tart pans, if you don’t have these, space them out on a tray allowing 4cm between each one. 6. Spoon 3 table spoon s of the caramel over the pears, set aside to cool. 7. Divide the pastry into 4, roll into as best a circle as possible with a diameter of 12cm. 8. When pears are cool wrap the pastry over the top and gently tuck down the sides. It should still look circular rather than taking on the pear shape too much. Make a small hole in the middle of pastry with a skewer, this will allow steam to escape and West End Life Magazine
help crisp it up. 9. Place in oven at 200C/fan180C/gas 6 10. Cook for 10-12 min or until pastry is golden brown, let rest for 5 min and carefully turn out. I you are looking for extra sauce, simply add a splash of cream to pot with excess caramel, bring to boil and drizzle on plate. Serve with a generous scoop of ice cream, I use Katy Rodgers Original Ice cream, and she also does a Christmas pudding flavour. Recipe supplied by Fintry Inn

Halotherapy – revolutionary ‘salt therapy’ that is changing lives… In recent years, concerns have been raised that people are consuming too much salt. High levels of sodium in the diet are believed to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes and may also cause high blood pressure. However, salt is also essential for the human body to function. It is required for blood, sweat, digestive juices and efficient nerve transmission. Beyond that though, salt is now being recognised as having natural healing properties. It is a powerful anti-bacterial agent and is a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine. For almost 200 years, people in Eastern Europe (Poland and Russia particularly) have been visiting salt mines and natural salt caves to take advantage of the healing properties of salt.

Speleotherapy as it is known is still used today to treat a wide range of respiratory and skin conditions. If there are no natural caves or mines nearby, there is still a way to enjoy these health benefits. Halotherapy. A new halotherapy centre is due to open in Glasgow in early 2015. Salann Halotherapy will be only the second centre of its kind in Scotland and will have two full size treatment rooms, one for up to 12 adults and the other for up to 10 children accompanied by adults. There will also be a third smaller VIP treatment room that can hold two people. The treatment rooms or “salt caves” will recreate the natural salt cave micro-climate using a special machine called a halogenerator. The machine will grind up sodium chloride crystals into ultra-fine particles and circulates the particles in the atmosphere. These particles, invisible to the naked eye, will penetrate deep into the respiratory system, reducing

Christmas Day with a difference Alternative ways to have a Cool Yule If you can’t face the thought of eating and drinking until your clothes part at the seams - or of watching the Great Escape on telly for the 500th time - perhaps it’s time you treated yourself to an alternative Christmas. If it’s action you are looking for, head for the hills and tackle one of Scotland’s Munros. Many are accessible within a short drive from Glasgow, so dig out the walking boots and waterproofs and off you go. If a 3,000ft climb seems a bit much, then take a gentle stroll around the city parks. They’ll be quiet over yuletide so you can amble along with the family without negotiating the crowds for once. And since the city streets will be devoid of heavy traffic, you could oil up your trusty iron steed and take an urban bike ride. Christmas is the one day of the year when you can have the road to yourself for once. Despite the erratic Scottish weather, the Christmas season is often one of the busiest for action sports such as surfing and skiing. There are plenty of outfits that will hire out the appropriate gear and provide instruction too. If you really want to go for it, check out VisitScotland’s website for details. Why not trade in the turkey for penguin - at Edinburgh Zoo that is? The Zoo is open as normal on Christmas Day, so why not catch up with the penguin parade and find out the latest on giant pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang. And let’s not forget about the true spirit of Christmas – a time of giving. If you want to give of your time, volunteering might be just the thing for you.
Check in with the Glasgow charities who might be seeking extra help at this time of year. Whether it is helping out providing for the homeless, serving in a soup kitchen or helping out in a care home – many worthy organisations will be glad of your help. If you haven’t darkened the doors of your church for years – or have never been a regular – why not join the thousands who attend

the many services provided by differing denominations across Glasgow. And if you really want to recharge your mental and spiritual batteries – why not take yourself off on a retreat? You’d be surprise how many and how varied they are – and if its peace you are looking for, it might be just what you need.

Christmas Turkey with a Shallot Stuffing Turkey is the traditional centre of our Christmas dinner tables and so we’re featuring this Christmas classic.
Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 90 minutes You’ll need: • 2.5kg Turkey • 2 tbsp rapeseed oil • Sea salt and black pepper For the stuffing: • 35g butter • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil • 4 shallots, peeled and finely chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped • 125g dried figs, chopped into small cubes • 1 small eating apples • 125g fresh breadcrumbs • 1 tbsp fresh sage leaves, chopped • 350g sausage meat • 2 tbsp of parsley, chopped • 1 large egg beaten • Sea salt and black pepper What to do: • Preheat oven to 230°C/Gas Mark 8 • Remove turkey giblets and reserve. Rinse the turkey inside and out and dry well. • Place the turkey in a large roasting pan, brush the turkey generously with rapeseed oil and season with sea salt and black pepper and cover with foil. • Place the prepared turkey in the pre-heated oven and cook at this temperature for the first 30 minutes. Then, lower the oven temperature to 180°C/Gas Mark West End Life Magazine
4 and cook for approximately 30 minutes per kilo, basting every hour. • To prepare the stuffing, heat the butter and rapeseed oil until the butter has melted. Add the shallot and fry gently until well softened but not browned. Stir in the garlic and season well with sea salt and black pepper. Remove from the heat and place in a bowl, leave to cool. • Peel the apples, cut into quarters, remove the core and cut into small cubes. Mix the figs, apples, breadcrumbs, sage, sausage meat and parsley with the shallots, season well with sea salt and black pepper using clean hands and then mix in the beaten egg. The mixture should be quite firm, with wet hands, mould the stuffing into balls the size of a golf ball. • Place on a greased baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through. Alternatively you can use the mixture to stuff an onion, per person, and place the rest of the mixture into an ovenproof dish to cook. • Take one small onion per person
and peel, leaving the top of the onion intact and the base root in place. Peel and boil, whole, in salted boiling water for 8-10 minutes, until just soft, drain and cool in cold water. Drain and cut the top off the onion, about three quarters of the way up, so as to make a lid. Using a sharp knife, hollow out the onion and stuff with the stuffing mixture, replace the lid and brush all over with rape seed oil. Bake for 30-35 minutes in the oven alongside the turkey until cooked through and slightly caramelised. • When the turkey is approximately 35 minutes before the end of cooking, remove the foil, drain off any of the excess fat and cook for a further 35 minutes or until golden brown. • Transfer the turkey to a platter and cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 20-30 minutes. • Serve the turkey carved with stuffing balls or stuffed onions and gravy. • Per serving (based on 10) 491 calories 25.6g fat 8.5g saturates www.westendlife.biz | 23
Jangled nerves, jangled nerves, jangled all the days... By Ellen Arnison
By now there will can be no more denial, the festive season is coming our way like a juggernaut hurtling down the motorway, scattering glitter as it gathers speed. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing more lovely than Christmas morning with pajamaed children clambering into bed with me exclaiming “he’s been” as they delve into the bottom of a stuffed stocking. But the first ads started sneaking onto the telly and the first chocolate Santa into the shops a good two months ago – by the time it comes, I’ve just about had enough. I’ve partied and cooked; shopped and wrapped; planned and re-planned; eaten and drank; cried and laughed at nativity plays, and even had to remind myself (once again) that I don’t much like mince pies. And the climax of it all – putting that huge roasted bird down on the dining table and calling the kids away from their
new toys – somehow leaves me limp and exhausted. Once again, it’ll have been a bit of a marathon to get to that point. The absolute high point for me is after the children have finally given in and gone to sleep on Christmas Eve. Sneaking into their rooms with a crackling, misshapen tube of wool stuffed with treats and surprises. Oh that and putting the clocks back in the hope they won’t get up until something like a decent hour. (Try it, it really works) Meantime, in the spirit of do what I say not what I do, try not to take it too seriously, there’ll be another Christmas along in a few short months and don’t forget to have a merry little time for yourself too. And if you can, cheat – no one’s life was ruined by eating shop-bought sausage rolls or getting presents out from under an artificial tree. And here’s an alternative version of a seasonal classic.
A Mother’s Twelve Days of Christmas On the first day of Christmas, My family sent to me A list of things for under the tree (The first sign of the approaching season, “just watch this advert mum” and “look at this catalogue, mum”. ) On the second day of Christmas, My family sent to me Two oven gloves (For all the cooking that’s going to be done over the next few weeks) And a list of things for under the tree On the third day of Christmas, My family sent to me socks, large men’s, (Bigger, the better to be stuffed with presents) Two oven gloves And a list of things for under the tree On the fourth day of Christmas, My family sent to me Four calling cards (Left by delivery people when I wasn’t in so I have to phone to arrange another day for whatever essential gift to be delivered) Socks, large men’s, Two oven gloves And a list of things for under the tree

Tis the season to be merry
(and inspired by magical gift ideas…)
at De Courcy’s Arcade, Cresswell Lane…
It’s funny, but De Courcy’s Arcade seems to have the ability to make every day feel like Christmas Eve – it’s just got that feel about it. Even balmy sunny Saturdays and Tuesday’s in Spring feel festive! But now it really is Christmas and now you really can go shopping for lots of lovely gifts! Twinkly lights, an array of tempting dining options and a huge range of quirky and innovative gifts, housewares, art and crafts. This trendy little gem, just waiting for you to discover, is tucked away in Cresswell Lane, just off Byres Road in Glasgow’s leafy West End. Perhaps it is in the shadow of the more-well known shops on the main street or the iconic party destination of nearby Ashton Lane, but De Courcy’s is well worth seeking out, for its own unique charm and personality. If you stand in Ashton Lane and follow the cobbles north past the car park along the thoroughfare as it narrows, you’ll find yourself in Cresswell Lane. Then leading off the whitewashed lane – which is strung with hundreds of fairy lights and lined with tables and chairs from the excellent local eateries – you’ll find De Courcy’s.
It’s a far cry from the stable buildings that it used to be in a bygone era – a place that the grander residents used to keep their horses. It’s easy to see why visitors today describe De Courcy’s as a treasure trove because there are plenty of charming and quirky gift shops – some specialising in works by Scottish crafters – as well as boutiques packed with unique pieces, both old and new. It’s the place to head for if you are looking for inspiration for a gift with a difference. Many of the shops carry ranges of vintage garments – this can often mean picking up a highquality, beautifully made item at a fraction of its original price. It also means you can be pretty certain that no one else will have one the same. The newest residents of De Courcy’s Arcade include LUXEcasa, a haven of home interiors and Alison’s Vintage and Retro Attic – THE place for lovers of vintage homewares. Then there’s Art Pistol, giving emerging artists a real shot, and generally promoting the very best of independent UK based artists. Art Pistol has been online and popping up all over Glasgow and Scotland since 2011, before settling in Cresswell Lane earlier

this year – and they love their new home as much as you will love the contemporary art that they offer. The Arcade and surrounding area aren’t just about spending money, they’re about hanging out and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere – perhaps enjoying a tasty treat or coffee. Remarkably, when you consider how close the incredibly noisy and bustling Byres Road is, Cresswell Lane is a haven of peace for some seriously considered shopping. While the Arcade is a longestablished Glasgow institution, it has evolved in recent years. If you haven’t been for a while, it’s always worth a return visit to see what’s new or to rediscover an old favourite. Many visitors aren’t interested in shopping they simply want to sit in one of the cafes and restaurants and watch the world go by. The home baking and delicious snacks may be distracting for a while, but there’s always something going on around De Courcy’s Arcade. Perhaps it’s the sense of community among traders and regular visitors, but, one thing’s for certain, this part of the city is a very special place, where it’s easy to feel at home. The traders, craftsmen and women and business people take a special pride in the place they work from as well as the work they do. That’s why you can be sure their welcome is warm and every bit as genuine as it seems. @westendlife
Glasgow Gallery –
artpistol going great guns
Like a bag of expertly microwaved popcorn, the Art Pistol gallery have stopped popping up around Glasgow and set up residence on the West End’s charming Cresswell Lane. If Art Pistol were popcorn… they’d be a great big box of salty and sweet. Their fresh white walls consumed with edgy, beautiful and generally different art. Disclaimer: Art Pistol do not sell popcorn. Ali from Art Pistol even tells me that he’s indifferent to popcorn. Too late. The analogy paints a good picture, and that’s important for an art gallery. Their walls are positively brimming with a fascinating mix of contemporary art from the best emerging artists and some well-established gallery favourites too.
A new Winter Show now dominates their walls, with artwork ranging from super affordable to heart-rate-increasing - although a 0% interest offer on purchases will reduce the pulse a bit. But art should get the pulse racing, speak to you on a personal level, or just raise a smile. And that’s what sets this unique art gallery apart. It is all a bit different and
the prices will please. If you like weird and wonderful or bold and beautiful, then Art Pistol is where you’ll discover it. They’re a refreshing addition to Glasgow’s already vibrant and esteemed art scene, and just on your West End doorstep. Or visit www.artpistol.co.uk to view the work of hundreds of emerging and independent UK artists.

Perfect Gifts for Christmas…
Nancy Smillie Shop
Janet and John are an arts & crafts gallery/shop in the heart of Glasgow’s West End, situated upstairs in the lovely De Courcy’s Arcade. They represent over 45 artists & crafters, both local and from across Scotland. A high proportion of the purchase price goes back into supporting the work of our contributing artists and crafters. Most of the work that they sell is handmade. Even the cards, prints and mugs have a significant handmade element in their production. They now have a wide range of Christmas gifts to suit all budgets. The photograph featured here is the Baljaffray Handknits Christmas Stocking – these mini stockings are tree decorations and are £2.75 each. Pop in and discover some wonderful, hand-made, unique Scottish Christmas gifts.
Starting off as a small outlet offering a meticulously selected range of ceramics, jewellery and glass, the Nancy Smillie Shop is now something of a Glasgow institiution. Now with its main shop in Cresswell Lane there’s an Aladdin’s Cave of gifts, furniture and jewellery on offer. The one constant over the 20 years is the commitment to quality and style that epitomised the first Nancy Smillie Shop. Every item is created and selected with love and care… making heirlooms for the future. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift or the exact piece to complete your home, you’ll find it here.

Traditional Christmas Gift Guide for Kids By Mariessa Devlin, Enchanted Forest Nurseries. At this time of year, we wait in anticipation for so many things and the department store adverts signify that Christmas is just around the corner. This year the magic is captured so well with fairies, cute penguins and of course Santa cast as the stars in the adverts. The magic of Christmas is already coming alive as our two year old mentions Santa and Christmas regularly. An easy gift guide for Santa this year, as our daughter would like a ‘bouncy ball’, so that shouldn’t be too much work for the elves!! Choosing the right gifts for children under the age of five needn’t be a chore. In our gift guide, we have looked for gifts that will provide fun, but for the adults we will let you know what educational value the gift has too. So…in no particular order…. and with many traditional favourites, go ahead, let your little ones unwrap the best Christmas ever: Toy Kitchen and Role Play Food Kitchens provide hours of endless fun for both boys and girls, whilst being a powerful way for children to develop social skills, their imagination and empathy Film Themed Toys Such toys are all the range, but can produce hours of imaginative play for children Play Tents They come in varying sizes, so fit any size of room or budget. West End Life Magazine
Most are pop-up so fold down for easy storage. Tents provide fantastic hideaways and dens for children, their dolls and action toys where their imagination can turn the tents into caves, castles and adult-free zones! Dolls house/Dolls Providing a wealth of enjoyment for little ones who can learn about themselves from caring for a doll, as well as learning self-help skills and fine motor skills. Wooden Garages/Work Benches With a focus on imaginative play, these toys are excellent for developing fine motor skills and dexterity in young children, as well as let them discover new things Ride on toys/trikes Most can be used indoors and outdoors, with the outdoor option having the added bonus of getting children exposed to fresh air (and sometimes a little rain). Great for teaching little ones skills in balance and gross motor control. Search for 3-in-1 trikes, a great buy that grows with your child as they become more independent Books Let’s foster a love for learning…. books are a fun way for children to learn. Coming in all shapes and sizes, large print, small print, photo books, board books. For under 3s board books are the best, much more durable and resilient to being chewed! By sharing different types of books with children, they can enjoy various types of reading experiences, for example rhyming books can help children build in
confidence when they can start to join in. Happy reading! Building blocks Construction toys provide wonderful opportunities for children (of all ages) to be creative enabling them to experiment with different designs and shapes. Building blocks also offer links to numeracy where children can use counting and colour as part of their designs. Using their little fingers to construct zoos, buildings and many designs also develops their fine and gross motor skills Dressing-Up Clothes A firm favourite for even the youngest children – dressing up clothes opens up a whole new world of make believe for children…..knights, fairies, princesses, heroes… allowing them to develop their communication skills as they learn to converse in their new ‘roles’ Raincoat and Wellies Let’s prepare our children for the winter without minimising their time outside, after all the classic childhood activity of splashing in puddles develops balance, coordination and gross motor skills, not to mention that this is Peppa Pig’s favourite hobby! Jewel in the city’s crown The quiet streets and splendid architecture of Hyndland It is hard to believe that 100 years ago, the Hyndland area of Glasgow was mainly farmland. Now, of course, it boasts splendid architecture with Edwardian tenements, impressive churches and picturesque gardens, and has become one of the city’s most desirable areas.
Red sandstone tenements and townhouses are enlivened by ornate carvings and stained glass and private and communal gardens bring colour to the attractive terraces. With average property prices much higher than most of the rest of the city, Hyndland is home mainly to professionals - and has also attracted writers, artists, actors and footballers of note. Hyndland Secondary School is a popular choice with parents and children and Glasgow University is close at hand. Hyndland is also home to high-quality retail outlets, which include busy restaurants, cafes, pubs, delicatessens, hair and beauty salons and providers of luxury goods.
The area has a range of select boutiques and designers shops providing fashionable clothing and accessories. Book and art lovers are also well catered for and a range of museums and galleries is close at hand. Rugby and bowling enthusiasts can be found at play in the area’s clubs. The jewel of the West End is well served by bus, rail and subway. The perfect place to spend some quality time this festive season.

GLASGOW CLINIC SEES OFF STIFF COMPETITION (including Harley Street) TO WIN TOP AESTHETIC AWARD
Clinetix, a Scottish aesthetic clinic, run by husband and wife, Dr Simon Ravichandran and Dr Emma Ravichandran, has seen off stiff competition to win Best Aesthetic Clinic 2014 in the prestigious MyFaceMyBody Awards. Clinetix beat entries from throughout the UK, including Harley Street based clinics, to pick up the coveted award at a glittering ceremony in London (November 1 2014) The MyFaceMyBody Awards are the only consumer awards dedicated to the cosmetic, aesthetic and dental industry and recognise outstanding service as well as product innovation and popularity. Clinetix offers a range of
treatments including wrinkle relaxing treatments, dermal fillers treatments, skin rejuvenation and semi-permanent make up, at their clinics in Bothwell and Hyndland, Glasgow. Dr Emma Ravichandran says, “The whole team is delighted to have picked up the award for Best Aesthetic Clinic 2014. “We take a holistic approach to all our patients and our aim is to address all the signs of ageing, rather than concentrating on a line here or a blemish there. Dangers for your pet at Christmas Time
Don’t let your pet become a “foreign body” statistic this Christmas. Every year, vets have to operate on many unfortunate pets that have succumbed to the temptation of the treasures beneath the tree and swallowed something they shouldn’t have. Plants and Trees Take care with floral arrangements and plants especially if you have cats; all lilies are toxic to cats and the pollen can easily get on their coats if they
brush past an arrangement and they can then ingest the toxins when they groom themselves. Poinsettias are also a common addition to the home at Christmas but they are toxic to your pet if ingested. If you have a “real” Christmas tree then pick up any dropping needles as they can get stuck in your pet’s paws. Pine trees can also be a cause of skin irritation in pets with skin allergies. Chocolate Many households hang chocolate treats on the tree or wrap presents containing chocolate and place them underneath the tree. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate is the worst as it contains a greater concentration of the toxic chemical, theobromine. Dogs especially are attracted to the smell of chocolate
treats. So please remember don’t leave any chocolate treats in reach of pets. Shut them out of the room where the tree is when you go to bed or go out. Decorations Cats love to play with string and tinsel is even more attractive as it sparkles. So again take care not to leave them unattended with the Christmas tree decorations. Tinsel can get stuck in the digestive tract if ingested causing serious problems for your pet and often requiring an operation to remove it. Alcohol A lot of us like a “tipple” at Christmas, but remember not to leave your glass unattended, as often dogs will “finish off” your beverage. Pets have a low tolerance for alcohol and it can seriously damage their liver.
