FINNISH DESIGN THRIVES FROM TIMELESS QUALITY AND CLOSENESS WITH NATURE The product design field has been always strong in Finland and design is a natural part of Finns’ everyday life. Finland´s golden design era started in the 50´s and 60´s – and these timeless design products are still in production and loved by Finns today. Nowadays, a new generation of young designers has stepped in and many companies are collaborating with fresh talents, creating new classics. Finnish design is known for its timelessness, for being of exceptionally good quality and for its high artistic value. At the moment, Finnish design is going through a progressive phase where crisp creativity is boiling to the surface. Closeness to nature and honesty are evidently present in Finnish design, yet there’s a novel urban touch to this new point of view. Although Finnish design belongs to the Scandinavian family, it often stands out as the bold, playful one.

Our goal was to create a brand that was practical yet personal at the same time and to concentrate on balance, timeless designs and enduring materials. The men behind FRENN are Antti Laitinen and Jarkko Kallio, experts who have worked in a variety of roles in the textile trade. Antti grew up surrounded by fabric swatches in rural Kuopio and has worked for all major menswear companies in Finland. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone in the Finnish design industry Jarkko doesn’t know. He has been working in Finnish lifestyle industry for 20 years. Both value a personal touch and believe firmly in the power of teamwork. FRENN arose from a desire to create pieces that people would cherish for years, if not decades.

Gemmi is a fur fashion brand with a heritage dating back to 1917. In December 2014 new owners acquired the fur factory based in the small town of Loviisa, Finland. The new owners are committed to preserving the town’s unique craftsmanship, combining it with a design philosophy rooted in modern urban sophistication. Gemmi’s collection of lightweight fur garments include reversible parkas, vests and jackets, made from the highest quality blue fox fur from strictly regulated Finnish farms. Along with the parka, Gemmi designs fashionforward light fur coats

that combine patterns and colours for a contemporary feel. The collection for both women and men are based on the Finnish sense of aesthetics and functionality. All Gemmi products are designed and handmade in the own factory, with a passion for carrying on pushing the boundaries of modernday fur fashion. While Gemmi mainly is an export company, it’s collection of fur garments and accessories can now also be found in a flagship store opened in Helsinki earlier this year.

Lapponia Jewelry Oy is a Finnish jewelry company established in 1960. Award-winning master silversmith and visionary Pekka Anttila (1931–1985) founded the company. In 1963, the company employed its first artist, goldsmith Björn Weckström. In Weckström’s hands, the rough shape and matte surface of gold nuggets from Lapland were fashioned into sculptural jewelry.
