stylish and energy efficient? your home can be both efficient composite door will not only look great but keep the heat in and any unwanted draughts out.

It’s a new year, which means a new start. And with energy efficiency on the agenda for homeowners, now is as good a time as any to make sure you are doing your bit for the environment.

It might also be time to finally bring your conservatory into the 21st century, particularly if you are experiencing heat loss in your conservatory roofs, due to a dated polycarbonate roof.

And when it comes to home improvements, you don’t have to compromise on style to keep those heating bills down.

The good news is you can replace it with a solid titled roof or thermally efficient glass roof, greatly reducing the energy costs by retaining a moderated living temperature in your conservatory. And with several styles to choose from, both will feel like a natural extension of your property.

Wolverhampton Glass has been installing high quality windows, doors, and conservatories to homes across the West Midlands for more than 40 years so is well placed to provide the improvements you want while energy proofing your home in the process.

Keeping the heat in and cold out while staying true to your property can be done – and the less your heating bills are, the less impact your home will have on the environment.

Windows are a particularly vulnerable point for heat to escape, with old existing double glazing not performing as it should, but they are the most instantly rewarding way of energy-proofing your home.

As part of Sustainium Group, a consortium of world-class home improvement companies that think differently, Wolverhampton Glass believes that homeowners deserve innovative, quality products and wonderful customer experience – and believe these should be provided in an ethical and sustainable way.

Whether you’re after colourful uPVC casement window, a sustainably sourced bespoke timber flush sash, or an ultra-thin, modern, aluminium window, the look of your home will not be compromised. All come with high-performance double and triple glazing options, which are highly energy efficient and will also help insulate your home against external noise.

claverley farm logs Claverley Farm Logs is a family business based on the outskirts of the village of Claverley. Brothers Chris and Tim ensure the logs they sell are well seasoned and barn stored ready for you to burn. All of our Seasoned logs are less than 22% moisture and are a mix of oak, chestnut and Birch. The kiln dried logs are less than 18% Moisture and are Oak, Ash and Birch. Both types are ideal as it is important to burn dry wood so not to damage your burner or chimney. We sell them in either Bulk Bags

or Loose Loads (2.5 bags worth) and deliver them up to a 12mile radius of our farm. The majority of our wood is locally sourced and is from well managed woodlands. We only sell hardwoods as they are denser than softwoods and therefore have a longer burning time. We look forward to seeing new and existing customers throughout this winter ahead. Please do telephone us for more information or go onto our website where you will see the full range of products that we sell which you can also purchase online.

selling jewellery: why auction offers the safest bet diamond and guilloche enamel pendant, which sold for £1,150. Modern jewellery also performs well – back in September a collection of modern designer jewellery sold for a combined total over £21,000, the star lot a Theo Fennell of London ‘Whip’ collection collarette, bangle & 2 pairs of earrings which achieved £6,200

When it comes to unlocking the value of gold and fine jewellery, by selling at auction you can rest assured of the best possible price for your items, as MD and Head Auctioneer at local auction house Cuttlestones explains… If, during lockdown, you’ve been going through your jewellery box and drawers and come across a piece of jewellery you inherited but are never going to wear, don’t be tempted to cash it in through a ‘cash for gold’ scheme – you could get a lot less than its true value!

For a free, no obligation valuation of jewellery or other antiques and collectibles, email photos to valuations@cuttlestones.co.uk or send via WhatsApp to 07949 603872. A full sale calendar as well as catalogues for forthcoming sales can be found at www.cuttlestones.co.uk

By selling at auction you can achieve a better price based on its intrinsic value as a piece as opposed to just its ‘scrap value’. For example, a 1930s gold bracelet with strong art deco styling will be of far greater interest to the collecting community therefore stand a chance of selling for way above its scrap value (it’s weight value would be the ‘baseline’ you could expect to achieve). Recent jewellery highlights from the Cuttlestones saleroom include a Victorian-style sapphire pendant set with diamonds that sold for £11,000 and a Victorian

cleaning services

a bright and beautiful home for 2021 It’s New Year & time for fresh starts. Now the decorations are packed away it could be time for some organisation to get your home 2021-ready. Here are our tips for the 3 most hated housework tasks.

a cleaning product specifically for bathrooms and ideally, something eco friendly for the health of your family. You can deal with mildew by using an old toothbrush. For a really shiny shower screen make a solution of 1-part distilled vinegar to 4 water, spray and wipe off.

1. Deep cleaning the kitchen After the Festive Feast, now’s the time for a deep clean. Take everything off the tops of cupboards and clear the surfaces, so you can get to grips with grease. Spray your kitchen cleaner on all surfaces, including the hob and leave for 5 minutes, then rinse with a microfibre cloth and warm water. Dry, and polish gloss finishes and tiles with a glass cleaner and a very dry, soft cloth. Remove the grills from hood extractors and scrub with a firm brush and soapy water. Once they are clean, you can maintain these by simply putting them through the dishwasher once a week. Always start high and move down. Use a limescale remover on the sink and polish with baby oil to make it shine. And finally, a good vacuum and mop for the floor, with a fresh mop head.

3. The Ironing mountain You need a good steam iron, so maybe time to invest in a steam generator iron in the sales. To help in future, hang clothes straight after washing and only spin on highest speed if they are going straight into the tumble dryer. To help with a pile of really creased clothes, spray lightly with water and pop in the tumble dryer to make half the creases drop away. If this all sounds too much, give Bright and Beautiful Wolverhampton a call. We offer eco-friendly, regular housekeeping services and one-off deep cleans, as well as laundry and ironing services. You can have a sparkly bathroom. But no-one said you had to do it yourself!

An entrance assessment day is taking place on January 30 for boys and girls looking to join the school from September 2021 in Years 7, 8 and 9 - which will be the first time the school has ever welcomed a Year 9 cohort.

A new fleet of minibuses will be used to launch an extended set of routes enabling children from across Shropshire and Staffordshire to travel to the school. Mrs Morris added: “To celebrate the extension to the senior school department, a highly competitive fee initiative is offered with places from Year 6 standing at £8,000 per year, rising by £500 per year to £10,000 per year in Year 11.

Headmistress at Birchfield School, Sarah Morris, said since announcing that the senior school was being extended to provide a full programme of GCSEs in the years ahead, interest in the school had surged.

“The entrance assessment for pupils interested in joining our classes in years 7, 8 and 9 from September 2021 will take place on Saturday, 30th January.

She said: “We will continue to educate pupils in Years 7 and 8 to the very highest academic standards, and the school boasts a superb record of 41 scholarships achieved in the past three years alone across academic, sporting, artistic and musical disciplines.

“We are also holding two open mornings on January 15 and 16 between 10am and 12.30pm, and are happy to arrange personal tours.

“However, from September 2021, we will be extending our offering to deliver a three-year programme of GCSEs alongside a full and varied curriculum when a new Year 9 class joins.”

“This is a wonderful time to be joining Birchfield School and we are expecting an influx of visitors, so please do get in touch for more information.” Anyone interested can email admissions@birchfieldschool.co.uk or visit www.birchfieldschool.co.uk

Pathways to success in School House, where common room spaces, cocurricular facilities, boarding facilities for full-time, weekly and flexi boarders, will all be developed.

When we welcome new families to Tettenhall College, I am always reminded of how much we have to tell them. It is a real highlight of my day when I have the opportunity to talk about this wonderful school, its heritage and the careful and very deliberate combination of pursuing excellence and personal care, absolutely at the same time.

Senior School pupils are also taking their first steps on the Pathways Programme, offering enhanced career development opportunities, life skills and a focus on life after school, whether at the best universities or beyond.

Despite the challenges that 2020 has thrown at the world, and perhaps indeed because of these, I have been so pleased to welcome an increasing number of parents who are keen to consider Tettenhall College for their children. Many tell me how they have heard about our consistent and determined mission to teach and educate throughout lockdowns and restrictions. They have heard great things about our teachers providing daily face to face remote learning and, as soon as we could possibly and safely do it, getting our young learners back in the classroom where they have remained with a full and expansive timetable.

There has never been a better time to get in touch and start a conversation with us about you, your family and your ambitions. With options to suit all circumstances, both day and boarding, we are confident that there is a tailored package to suit you. Personal virtual tours are currently available, as are one to one meetings with myself. We have two Entrance Assessment events taking place at the beginning of the year. Our Entrance Assessment for Y7 – Y9 takes place on Saturday 23rd January 2021, with scholarship assessments being completed during the week prior to this.

My team and I here at Tettenhall College have ambitious plans for 2021 and beyond; these are already underway. Our Senior School pupils are already experiencing the new and refreshed Scholarship Programme that ensures that scholarship in all its forms is accessible to every pupil, whether they have received a formal award or are working towards that level.

Our Sixth Form Entrance Assessment will take place on Saturday 27th February, with our scholarship assessments taking place that week. So, please do contact us, let’s start a conversation. I can assure you of a very warm welcome and a commitment to high and shared ambitions.

Whilst our facilities are truly excellent and our school site is outstanding, we are continuing to invest in upgrading further areas to meet the demands of modern independent schooling. Early in 2021 work will begin on a high-grade project

a helping hand at christmas disappoint and the worry about costs in the New Year. For this reason, Rev Lee Plummer, our newly appointed chaplain and myself have asked our school community to lend a hand – to make Christmas a little easier for families in our local area who cannot afford even life’s basics this year.”

A Shropshire school has joined forces with Telford FoodBanks and Babybank to help families in need this Christmas. Old Hall School in Wellington has teamed up with those working in the community to create a wishlist of items that could make a big difference this festive season and are needed urgently.

The ‘Wish list’ contains many of the everyday essentials that the Food Bank supplies to families throughout the year. At this time of year however, the demand is always greater than the supply. The list has been compiled in conjunction with the Food Banks and Baby Bank to ensure that the school donates items needed most urgently.

Families from the schools are being encouraged to make donations from the list in a Covid-Safe way. They can be ordered from home online and the donations will be delivered directly to school which will take charge of handing them over to be used where they are most needed.

They include non-perishable food items, toiletries, nappies and wipes together with infant milk.

“As we head towards Christmas 2020, I think we all appreciate that the festive season this year will be one like no other,“ said Sue Stevens, Head of RE and History at Old Hall School.

“Our Year 5 pupils are going to be taking a lead in promoting this venture as part of their current Religious Studies unit of work,” added Mrs Stevens.

“Whilst for many of us the year has been a challenge, for some people in our local area it has been both heart-breaking and tragic with loss of family, income, businesses, and even their homes.

“Once we have received all the donations Rev Plummer and myself will then deliver the boxes to Telford Crisis Support who liaise with all the Food Banks to ensure that goods are directed to where the need is greatest.”

“Christmas brings with it many pressures for families – the expectations, the desire not to

nick & royston's diary It may have been the most bizarre and unexpected year of our lifetimes and reflecting back over 2020 certainly brings with it a mixture of emotions but there are definitely moments to treasure and who better to catch up with than our fabulous duo Royston and Nick to find out their favourite highlights of 2020!

The Lock Down

Over the months of lockdown, it was hard not to reflect on life and what’s really important to us all. After 30 years, running a very successful business and building a celebrity and media career, it gave Nick and Royston a rare commodity – time off! Life became more simplistic, with the salons closed and their phones were now not ringing constantly, this gave them chance to walk the dog, enjoy the fabulous weather and their home-life. For this workaholic duo, 2020 has been a time to appreciate their lives. As much as they love the high life, health, true friendships and loving what you do every day, is what makes them truly happy. Thank you to our team and friends, for all their loyalty and support especially this year.

National Hair Sunday

Nick and Royston wanted to come up with a way of recognising the amazing efforts and say thank you to our frontline NHS workers for everything they have done for our country, so National Hair Sunday was born. With all their contacts in the media, the industry and on social media they decided to offer support and raise awareness, they quickly decided to make it a national campaign. They got to work by asking hairdressers around the UK to commit to a free day of hairdressing for frontline workers. The response was unbelievable and they were supported by the entire hairdressing press, local press and over 1500 hair salons around the UK and Ireland including many of the biggest hairdressing groups in the country. National Hair Sunday was held on the first Sunday after lockdown. Frontline workers were invited to Royston Blythe and many salons all around the country for free hairdressing services as an enormous thank you! It was a wonderful day for everyone involved and being able to organise this for the NHS workers has to be Royston and Nick’s absolute highlight of 2020.

Cheshire Housewives

After being given the thumbs up, filming of the Housewives of Cheshire was allowed to continue after the summer lockdown. Lots of fun and frolics with the housewives kept Royston and Nick busy over the summer months! With hilarious moments, lavish garden parties and special gettogethers with the glamorous ladies which have been aired on ITVBe’s Real Housewives of Cheshire, this has offered lots of light relief and entertainment over the autumn months. Let’s look forward to a happier, healthy and safer New Year for us all.

Midlands Hairdresser of the Year 2020

The lockdown in November was another disappointment for not only Nick and Royston, but again so many of their lovely clients. The shining star on their return was Nick winning the prestigious British Hairdressing Award – `Midlands Hairdresser of the Year 2020`. This will be the 4th time he has won this National Award, recognising his unique talent by icons of the hairdressing industry. The final is usually held at London’s Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair, however this year Awards were held virtually. Watched remotely by the all the team, Rylan Clark- Neal announced Nick as the Midland Hairdresser winner. Nick, Royston and all the team were ecstatic: “The BHA Awards is the pinnacle of any year, but winning this year means even more to Nick, Royston and their wonderful team. This is an incredible boost to the team and clients after such a difficult year.” With the salons back open and more in demand than ever, all at Royston Blythe look forward to a happy and healthy 2021.

travel

my ‘ten top travel tips’ Essential reading if you are planning to go abroad in 2021. My ‘Ten Top Travel Tips’ Essential reading if you are planning to go abroad in 2021. 1. Check Your Passport! From the 1st January 2021 (with Brexit) for most destinations you will now need a minimum of 6 months left on your passport. 2. Keep Up-To-Date With Destination Entry Requirements. It’s highly likely that the entry requirements for your holiday destination will change between the time you book and travel. To enter most (if not all destinations) in 2021 you will require evidence of a negative Covid test, so it’s really important to factor in the cost and timings of this test to make sure you meet the requirements.

Gilly Bachelor, Travel Expert It is now almost twelve months since we started to hear news reports about a mystery virus that was creating havoc in China, and none of us could have anticipated that we would still be feeling the impact twelve months later.

3. Check Your Travel Insurance. Polices vary, and whilst most now include cover for Covid-related medical expenses and repatriation costs, most do not cover cancellation costs if you test positive prior to travelling, or have to self-isolate.

It has been a tough year in travel (though I really don’t think anyone got through 2020 unscathed) however, from late 2020 bookings really ramped up with clients determined to get something in their diary to look forward to!

4. Be Prepared For Change! Whether we like it or not, airlines are changing their flight schedules (often at short notice) and hotels are changing their opening dates.

I did spend a lot of time in 2020 securing rebookings and refunds for my clients but I’m also delighted to share with you that I had clients who successfully travelled to Mainland Greece, Crete, Portugal, Dubai, St Lucia, Antigua, The Maldives and the Canary Islands from August 2020 onwards, but these trips took meticulous planning.

5. Book A ‘Package’. If you book a package holiday (e.g. including a flight, hotel and transfers) you are financially protected against changes and entitled to a refund or rebooking.

To help you with your planning I’ve put together a list of my Top Ten Travel Tips for 2021, as planning and booking a holiday has never been more complex.

6. Make Sure ‘Add On Extras’ Have Free Cancellations. These could include an airport hotel, lounge and parking. You don’t want to be left out-

of-pocket if your holiday is cancelled or amended.

you return to the UK), we’ve got competitivelypriced, indirect flight options from Manchester or Birmingham.

7. Only Book A Holiday if it is ABTA and/or ATOL Protected. These schemes are designed to protect you if your holiday company or airline fails, a genuine reality in these challenging times.

The best time to visit The Maldives is November to April, but don’t rule out our Summer months, as whilst you may experience some rain, there’s still plenty of sunshine plus great prices! So, it could make your ‘bucket list’ destination surprisingly affordable.

8. Don’t Look Until You’re Ready To Book. With so many holidays rebooked from 2020 in to 2021 availability is already limited and prices are rising. 9. Plan Ahead. You can now book lots of holidays in to 2022! You can ‘lock-in’ your dream holiday with a small deposit, with the final balance not due up to 6 weeks before travel.

Do you want to find out more about how I work, and the service I can offer you? There’s no fees for my service, and never any obligation to book, so what have you got to lose? Let’s get an appointment in the diary today. You can come to my beautiful office in Brewood, but we can also schedule a video call if you prefer.

10. Book Your Holiday With A Travel Agent. This affords you the best protection and support should something change or go wrong, ideally someone that’s been helpful and available throughout these unprecedented times!

If you want the reassurance of planning and booking your holiday with someone that’s passionate about travel and customer service please get in touch. E:gilly.bachelor@notjusttravel. com M:07970102161.

Here’s my destination recommendation for 2021 – The Maldives. The Maldives has been very popular for travel from December 2020 onwards, as it’s the perfect destination for ‘social distancing’ on your own resort island. The great news is that with Dubai now in the Travel Corridor (so there’s no need to quarantine when

looking ahead to your wedding day, selecting your flowers and making the plans that’s right for you both With last year being a year that no-one could of expected with weddings being postponed its time to start looking ahead. I hope you all had a great Christmas in our bubbles and I wish you all a healthy 2021. The New Year brings new flower trends and designers creating new designs to inspire couples in the world of wedding flowers and styling. In my wedding flower orders I have already noticed a big increase in weddings throughout the year and not just for the summer months, as couples are selecting spring and autumn weddings. This is great for florists as in addition to us working with fabulous summer blooms our selection and creativity then absorbs the natural and delicate spring flowers for weddings at the start of the year to the extreme of autumnal weddings where we use stronger flowers and textures such as berries, oak leaves, carthamus and pussy willow. I really feel lucky to have an amazing job.

PLANNING AND SELECTING YOUR WEDDING FLOWERS AND FLORIST When you start to plan your wedding flowers, I suggest your first steps is to view their work. This can be achieved by viewing your florist’s online gallery which should be on their website or social media account. If you like their style of floristry then I recommend either a phone call of pop into the shop for a chat to firstly introduce yourselves to them and also to explain the ideas briefly that you have for your big day. From this you can then you can book your consultation with them which gives you the opportunity to explain in more depth your ideas and colours. The florist will then be able to cost your order to assist you with your budgeting. Obtain several quotes and then decide which florist you feel can create your ideas and be part of your big day and also which florist you felt you can relax and express yourself and ideas more freely. Many venues have built up relations with suppliers and if you contact your wedding planner they can suggest a few handpicked florists, which may prove valuable when you are looking for reputable suppliers. A small deposit will secure your date and you can then feel that your wedding flower order is being managed. At intervals throughout the planning stage book review appointments to keep you order up to with any changes that need making. Your florist will prompt you for information when it is needed so don’t worry if you get distracted with your suppliers and plans. They will keep you on track. One BIG tip when you liaise with your suppliers. Suppliers only know whatever you tell them. If you want a certain picture captured, then let your photographer know. If there is a certain flower you really do not like, then make sure your florist knows your preferences. A big significant thing if you have an allergy to pollen. If you let your florist know they will avoid all flowers with fragrance.

MY RECOMMENDATIONS Having been a wedding florist for 21 years, I have had the pleasure to met and work alongside other amazing suppliers within the wedding industry. Here is a few of my favourites

Lipolis 7 collapses fat within the legs, abdomen and buttocks at first and then rejuvenates throughout the body especially the face. After the fat is collapsed by cavitation, Radio Frequency melts the fat further. Different handles are used in different parts of the body. Radio Frequency continues tightening the skin, which improves orange peel. The effect of skin rejuvenation is very evident. Finally a hollow handle massages rhythmically imitating human hands to dissolve small pieces fat, which promotes the lymphatic system to eliminate the toxins out of the body.

After fat dissolving and Lipolis7 this looks better straight away then continues to reduce over the next 6/8 weeks. More can be added every 14 days.

So why choose the dentist?

Anti-wrinkle injections have revolutionised the treatment of wrinkles and are great for elimination and prevention of forehead lines and those around the eyes.

You will be in safe hands with us. Dentists are highly trained in facial anatomy. This knowledge, coupled with steady hands and experience in administering pain-free injections, makes us the ideal first port of call when considering facial aesthetic treatments.

We use our facial muscles for smiling, frowning and other expressions and, over time, prominent lines may be formed in the outer layers of skin. Injections into these overactive muscles can safely smooth these problem areas. As part of the ageing process we also lose midface volume. mind your posture: buying a bed Chiropractors are often asked for advice on the selection of beds and mattresses and, in truth, there is no one solution that suits all. Choosing the right bed can minimise those factors that may lead to, or aggravate back pain. We come in different weights, shapes and sizes, but have one thing in common; we spend more than a third of our lives in bed, so should choose our beds carefully.

If you are lying on your side, your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your spine should not sag (bed too soft) or bow (bed too hard). The longer you can spend lying on a mattress before you buy it, the more accurate this feeling will be. ¨ Your pillow should be an extension of this i.e. your neck should be a continuation of the straight spine and not too high or too low. Always shop with your partner as your respective ideal mattress tensions could be very different. If this is the case, buy beds from a range that allow two single mattresses to be zipped together, so that you both get the support you need. For more information on how to maintain a healthy posture, or if you have neck, back or joint pain, talk to one of the Chiropractors at The Tettenhall Road Chiropractic Clinic.

Which is better, a hard or soft mattress? The best mattress is a ’supportive one‘. A 16 stone person sleeping on a mattress may not get the same support as a 10 stone person sleeping on the same mattress. How do I know which is the right mattress for me?

pets & garden

wishing for those long sunny days to be near There’s a nip in the air, the dark nights are here and we’re wishing for those long sunny days to be near.

for them, there are many ideas or even readymade games on the internet to choose from, whatever species your furry one is I’m sure they’ll enjoy it. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise so if you’re finding it hard to get out and about as much as you would like games are a good way to keep them stimulated and happy.

With our heating on and our curtains drawn, the air in the home can be quite dry and this can cause pets to have dry noses, dry throats and dry skin. It can also cause them and us to be itchy and possibly develop upper respiratory issues, we also dehydrate quicker when the central heating is on. It’s important to ensure that the house is kept properly ventilated and clean fresh water is always available for your furry ones, put a bowl of water in a couple of different rooms around the house to encourage them to have a drink.

When you do venture out of the house check cars before you start them as cats like to climb inside a car engine to keep warm. If you have a cat you may like to pop a litter tray down for them, they may prefer to stay indoors on particularly cold days. Wash your dogs’ feet off after a walk, especially if the gritters have been out because rock salt is actually harmful to dogs, it can cause burns/frostbite on their pads and may also make them poorly if they lick it off themselves.

Fresh air is so important and sunlight is vital for all mammals. Sunlight is important for overall health and wellbeing, so even though there is less of it at this time of the year get out in the daylight for a nice walk with your precious ones or potter around the garden if you can.

Please remember to spare a thought for the wildlife and pop some fresh water and food out for them if you can. Remember a fluffed-up bird doesn’t mean they are fat; they are trying to keep warm and could really use some food to give them energy to generate more body heat.

To give your cat and dog, as well as yourself, a nutritional boost and help fend off any grotty bugs that may be lurking, you could make a bone broth. After you’ve eaten your roast chicken, simply boil the chicken carcass up and simmer for a few hours, strain and then safely dispose of the bones so that animals can’t get to them. (Cooked chicken bones can be a dangerous choking hazard and can splinter). You are then left with the broth which is full of wonderful nutrients that may help give you and your furry ones a winter immune system boost. Offer your dog or cat a small amount on a separate saucer, you can serve it slightly warm, just tepid for them and do yourself a nice warm mug full too, ideal after that chilly daytime walk.

Keep warm, happy and healthy while you’re wishing for those long sunny days to be near! Do not feed bone broth if your dog or cat has related allergies or have any other medical issues that need to be taken into consideration. Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

a new year, a new season Seed potatoes usually arrive at the start of the New Year, weather permitting. Once you get them home, put them to chit (allow shoots to form), egg trays are ideal for this, place them in a light, cool and frost free environment. You can start seed potatoes growing in pots inside as early as you like, so long as they are protected from any frosts we may have.

it out, wash it down and disinfect it. Only wash glass down on a mild day to avoid cracking cold panes of glass. Having a clean greenhouse at the beginning of the season ensures that seeds and plants get off to a good start. If you want to start something off early in the greenhouse try sowing some sweet pea seeds in a cool environment. Use a seed compost and sow them into peat pots 2 to 3 seeds per pot. When they’re ready for planting out the roots will have grown through the pot and its then very easy to just pop the plant into the ground or a container.

If you haven’t used winter wash on your fruit trees yet, do so on a mild day before the buds start to burst, this will clear up any pests and their eggs left overwintering on your trees. Make sure you have a grease band wrapped round tree stems, this can be kept on all year round to catch any pests climbing up the tree.

Plug plants will be available around the beginning of March, but they will need heat to start with. Grow them in the house to get a head start, but remember you need to take note of the weather conditions and not be in a rush to put tender plants out before May time.

If the weathers fine and frost free, get out into the garden to finish any clearing up jobs that weren’t done at the end of 2020, especially tidying up leaves and debris. This will help to prevent disease from spreading and removes hiding places for slugs and snails. If the snow and hard frosts do arrive make sure vulnerable plants – Hebe, Phormium, Cordyline, Palms and Tree Ferns are covered with fleece. Remember to make sure outdoor taps are lagged and covered over in the winter to prevent any cracking and leaks caused by freezing.

Don’t forget our feathered friends, especially if the weather is poor – we’ve always got peanuts, seed, mealworms, fat balls and feeders in stock. Clean off bird tables regularly and remember to put out fresh water daily. Lealans Garden Centre 01902 700 209 enquiries@lealansgradencentre.co.uk www.lealansgardencentre.co.uk

co-parenting during covid; a practical guide online – gaming. If the usual direct contact cannot occur, try video contact for story time or a game together, or even watch a film together via skype! Make the quality time exciting and something to look forward too

Mahrukh Ahmed During these recent times, co parenting during the pandemic has been troublesome. So much so that legislation has implemented specific allowances for child contact to occur during lockdown restrictions, despite social distancing rules. Government guidelines have made an exception for children (under the age of 18) to travel between households when parents do not live in the same house. In accordance with The Children’s Act 1989, the welfare of the child is always paramount, and to prevent healthy contact between a child and parent would be jeopardizing this greatly. This is why we have put together some top tips for maintaining child contact between separated parents and children during Covid-19 •

Be Pleasant- remember that your child is aware of the atmosphere you are in, and feels the effect of tension probably more than you do. If you have any disagreements with your co-parent do not let this affect the contact between you and your child. Be co-operative - if you feel you are unable to make direct communication with your co-parent, try and use family members/friends or your legal representative to help ease things along. Remember to put the health of everyone at the top of your priority.

Be punctual - most complaints come from early/ late parents. Remember that the contact you have with your child will be the most exciting part of their day. Refrain from disappointing the residing parent and child and attend your contact session on time.

Be creative - do not estimate the power of a letter or a card, asking your child to draw pictures of what they have done at home can keep their mind occupied and have the child and yourself create a scrapbook of your communication

Be patient - Remember, everyone reacts differently, and emotions vary from person to person. The global crisis is a worrying time for all, and the energy you show will have an effect on your children. Remain optimistic, positive, and understanding towards your child and reassure them that despite the government measures, they will not be left alone.

Routines are changing, lifestyles have been amended and it can feel like the new “norm “is out of our control. As parents, the court understands that control, routine, and every-day procedure is vital for a child’s upbringings. However, it is essential to remember that the difficulty we are in will eventually end.

Be transparent - As this are worrying times, it is always concerning whether children or loved ones will be exposed to the virus or to any symptoms. Therefore, parents should remember to provide each other with any information they feel is relevant that could be confirmed or suspected exposure to Covid-19

Life will return to normal and we will return to the activities we enjoy. The most beneficial thing you can for your children and your co-parenting is to be understanding and patient. Keeping disputes and contradictions to a minimum will help you and your family manage the stress.

Be tech-savvy - The present crisis presents parents an opportunity to work together and be flexible. The 21st Century child has never been more familiar with the use of facetime, zoom, and

last minute inheritance tax planning bill. This is because making gifts can be very difficult as approval from the Court of Protection is required. The Court of Protection’s will not allow assets to be gifted away in most cases. This can make it difficult to plan for passing on your wealth tax-efficiently.

Inheritance Tax – a tax that often hits normal people hard and is increasing year by year. More and more people are falling into the tax trap. I sometimes hear ordinary people say, “I’ve paid tax all my life, why should I pay it again?” In 2019, HMRC raised over £5 billion from Inheritance Tax, and research at the time suggested that around a third of the population aged 55 and over that seek financial advice from an Independent Financial Adviser have not even considered Inheritance Tax planning, despite the tax rate being 40%.

What can be done instead? Let’s assume that your total estate is worth £1.5 million and have been widowed. Depending upon your circumstances, your estate may have to pay tax of between £200,000 and £340,000. Even though you may have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, you can still plan to reduce the tax bill. You probably will not be able to gift assets away or you may need to retain full use of your assets. Even if you can make gifts, you will need to live a further seven years for the gift to fully fall outside of your estate for inheritance tax purposes, by which time it may be too late.

For many people, Inheritance Tax planning (legally of course) can appear to be too complex, as most people need to retain use of their assets during their lives, to provide them with an income. Quite often the planning is either not carried out at all or is put off until an illness comes along and suddenly there is a desire to reduce the tax Bill due if at all possible.

What can be done if I decide that you must take action?

So, can you still tax plan if you have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place.

There are a number possible solutions – Either you or your Attorneys can decide to make investment decisions on your behalf that can help

If there is a Lasting Power of Attorney in place many people think that there is nothing that can be done to plan to reduce an inheritance tax

significantly. There are investment solutions that have been in existence for a very long time but are rarely used as many investors are unaware that they even exists. In fact these types of investments have been around since 1976 but until the last 10 years have not really been accessible to many, other than the very wealthy. This type of planning is now available to just about anyone that wishes to plan to reduce their Inheritance Tax bill.

the case. Some of these types of investments are towards the lower end of the risk spectrum and only targeting modest returns and as capital preservation is very important. Inheritance tax is a complicated area of financial planning and it is advisable to seek specific financial advice from an independent financial adviser before making any decisions to invest or plan for inheritance tax.

If an investment is made it must be held for a minimum of two years and owned at the point of your death for the investment to fall outside of your estate. This could save your children from a substantial inheritance tax bill. It may not entirely eliminate the tax liability, but it could make a big difference.

As with any investment, there is no guarantee that the target return will be achieved, and investors may get back less than the amount they invested. Past performance and forecasts are not a reliable indicator of future performance. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change. The availability of Business Relief depends on the companies in which investments are arranged into maintaining their tax status.

By using this type of strategy, there is no life insurance requiring medical underwriting and no requirement to survive for seven years after making any gifts. In addition, if necessary, withdrawals can be made at any time, without jeopardising the plans to mitigate against inheritance tax.

Martin Dodd is an Independent Financial Adviser providing financial advice in the Wolverhampton area. Midlands Investment Agency is based in Tettenhall High Street. Contact him on 01902 742221.

peugeot 2008 gt-line 1.2 litre puretech 130 On the open road the Peugeot is quite a willing performer, very little body lean considering it is an SUV, and it performs quite well on open, twisty roads.

In the prolific market place for an SUV, today you have to stand out to sell your model, and the new Peugeot 2008 certainly fits that criteria, it is based on the brilliant 208, writes Bob Hickman.

The 1199cc 3-cylinder engine produces 131bhp and it was driven through a 6-speed manual gearbox, this really was a delight to use.

It has a bold look, the colour schemes are outstanding and with creases and sweeping lines all over the place, this really is a stand out vehicle, possibly because of its French flair.

Peugeot claim a top speed of 122mph could be possible and they suggest the 0-62 gallop could be done in 8.9 seconds. The combined figure of 43.7mpg should be achievable. The CO2 emission figure is given as 132g/km.

The inside has not been overlooked either, the colour scheme is wonderful, the huge infotainment system is eye opening, its bold and with the massive screen that it has available, it really is a step forward in interior design. The first of the two screens is conventional, its set within the centre of the dash board, and it really does operate everything from the sat navigational system to the heating system and the other various ambient items. The second screen replaces the conventional instrument binnacle that you would normally find behind the steering wheel and it supposedly has a 3D effect. It is fully customisable and to do this you really do need to sit down with the handbook and work it through because it is complicated. The only negativity that I found with this was the factor that whilst there is a small steering wheel the instrumentation binnacle is placed in such a position that if you have the seat either too low or the steering wheel too high then the view is a little restrictive.

There are 6 trims to choose from, Active, Alert, Active Premium, Alert Premium, GT-Line and GT. The entry level comes with 16 alloy wheels, air conditioning, electrically heated door mirrors, parking sensors, LED Lights, the basic entry level is quite well equipped. The choice of engines vary, all based on a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder derivative, producing either 100, 130 or 155 bhp. If the 6-speed manual gearbox is not up to your liking and you prefer the automatic route there is an 8-speed box available as an option. There is also a further choice to be made of a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel which can produce up to 62mpg. The Peugeot 2008 really is worthy of serious consideration, check out the colour schemes available, my test car was finished in Fusion Orange metallic, the leather seating with green stitching was outstanding.

Interior space is really excellent, 2, 6ft adults can be accommodated in the front with ample head, shoulder, knee room, the passengers in the rear may have to be aware their knees could be in contact with the front seats if sitting behind a fellow tall person, but there is still plenty of headroom.

The test car on the road price was ÂŁ26,580 and has a 3-year or 60,000 mile warranty and the suggested interval for servicing was at 1 year or 12,500 miles.

honda type hr-v 1.5 vtec ex My test car had the automatic gearbox and Honda claim a 0-60 of a somewhat lethargic 11.4seconds and a top speed of 116mph. They project a combined fuel figure of 50.4mpg, if economy is your forte then the 1.6 diesel is reported as doing 70mpg. The fuel emissions are on the high side in the 1.5-litre VTEC at 130.

The Honda HR-V is another entrant in to the overpopulated family SUV marketplace, writes Bob Hickman. One big feature where the HR-V really does shine amongst the opposition, is the interior space, if you need to carry loads of luggage then this is the vehicle for you. With the rear seats in place it can carry considerable amounts but drop the seats down and the flat floor makes loading heavy items dead easy and you have a huge amount of space. There is also a considerable amount of underfloor storage.

The driving dynamics of the HR-V are of a pleasant companion, the variable ratio electronically assisted rack and pinion steering system felt accurate and had a nice degree of weighting. The vehicle was an able performer on twisty B roads with little or no body roll considering the size of the vehicle I think this is a tribute to the Honda engineers and the excellent performance dampers and suspension revisions that have been carried out.

I liked the combination of the soft touchy feel to the instrumentation and switchgear, the trim and leather in my particular vehicle were a considerable asset. All the main dials and controls are within easy reach of the driver and the technology that has been included, including an excellent satellite navigation system, is a delight and very easy to use.

I am not quite sure what Honda have done with the 1.5-litre VTEC engine in the HR-V, in my vehicle it was noisy and lethargic and the CDT automatic gearbox really did labour, it groaned and when you tried to accelerate firmly the noise factor and the whole aspect was disappointing and having driven many other Hondas with the same engine and an automatic gear box I wasn’t quite certain what had gone wrong with the HR-V.

The interior is roomy with excellent leg and headroom but not just front but rear seat occupants as well. All the range have cruise control fitted and as you would expect Blue Tooth for telephone connection and a decent DAB sound system. The steering wheel contains an awful lot of the controls for the vehicle, so no fiddling with the centre infotainment screen.

For my money and I am a lover of automatics, if it was an HRV on my buying list I would stick with the manual gearbox.

The choice of engine is between the well proven 1.5-litre VTEC petrol or a more frugal 1.6-litre DTEC diesel engine. The petrol engine has a choice between a 6-speed manual or an automatic option. If diesel is your choice then you are only able to choose the 6-speed manual gearbox.

The price of the HR-V range start at £20,690 for the petrol derivative and top out at £27,500 for the top specification EX with the automatic gearbox.
