UNIQUENESS AND ECLECTIC DESIGN
Entering into 2023 we’re making room for pieces that are unique, meaningful and stand out. As a designer, I spend time with my clients getting to know their personality and lifestyle. I prefer to source pieces and design layouts that make their space feel unique. Whether that’s a really distinctive chair, coffee table or statement floor lamp, we’re making room for pieces that stand out by doing so or zoning rooms that makes for a less traditional layout.
NATURE INSPIRED ORGANIC MATERIALS
Natural elements like marble, rattan, wicker, and cane will continue to have a strong presence in design next year. Nature has a calming effect and it is so important that our homes feel calm in a chaotic world. Organic materials such as wood and colours inspired by nature are popular furniture choices in 2023.
One of my favourite cost-effective styling tips to create an organic look is as simple as snipping branches or stems from your outside surroundings and adding them to earth-tone vases. Think oversized when cutting, to create a sense of drama in your displays.
It’s time to upgrade your garage door to a Garolla electric door. Not only are they strong and secure, they are also thermally insulated. So if you’re transforming the garage into a home gym, o ce or even a garden bar, Garolla is perfect for you. Give us a call today and we’ll come and measure up FREE of charge. PAINTED CEILINGS
Many use walls as an extension of their warm and cosy space - but it doesn’t have to end there. Refer to the ceiling as the 5th wall, and depending on the space and architecture of a room, painting the ceiling can create a sense of cohesiveness.
STATEMENT OVERSIZED LAMPS AND WALL LIGHTS
Although recessed lighting is certainly not going anywhere, statement lamps and wall lights, even just as decorative pieces more so than for lighting, will be incorporated into spaces. Also oversize to create interest and a sense of fun. Brass wall lights will continue to be a popular metallic tone over the next year.
VINTAGE FURNITURE
If you love to collect second hand pieces, then 2023 is your year! Vintage-inspired furniture is expected to make a comeback. Vintage is the perfect way to add a unique, classic and timeless feel to your home. Websites, including Facebook Marketplace, are excellent to source your second-hand finds as are local antique stores; a great way to be eco-friendly and find a bargain piece!
COLOURFUL, PATTERN FABRICS
As 2023 is the year of colour and pattern, as a designer I am noticing clients are willing to experiment with colour, pattern and unique eye-catching pieces that become the focal point of the room. Patterns on fabric will be en vogue in 2023 with stripes, block prints and vintage-inspired patterns. I have an amazing range of fabric suppliers that I can source the most beautiful fabrics from so if you are looking to find that unique fabric to add interest to your upholstery please do get in touch. I designed a living room with these beautiful upholstery fabrics for armchair, footstool and cushions inspired by classic English countryside prints.

CURTAINS AND CUSHION TRIMMINGS
2023 will be the year of trims in fashion. I have been adding trims into my curtains, pelmets, cushions and upholstery pieces and have plans to continue in 2023 with the super contemporary approach to tassels, trims and piping edges. There are hundreds of designs and colours to elevate your interior spaces.
WALLPAPER
For 2023, wallpaper is still as popular and can direct the mood of the room. My clients are open to more colour and bolder statement wallpapers for 2023; murals, stripes, botanical prints, large-scale geometrics, textured neutrals and abstract modern patterns. I am lucky to see so many fantastic wallpaper suppliers and I would love to source your perfect wallpaper print for 2023. Please do get in touch as I would love to work on your wallpaper project.

CURVED FURNITURE
To create a softness in a room, I am noticing more curves on furniture design such as dining chairs, sofas, armchairs, curved coffee tables and desks. Curved interiors are proven to give off a relaxing and calming feel due to the rounded organic appearance.
COLOUR TRENDS
EARTH TONES AND WARM NEUTRALS
The consensus is that grey is out and warm earthy tones and warm neutrals will continue to dominate in 2023, e.g., muted earth shades of terracotta, green, yellow and plum. I think we will still see a lot of water tones like greens and blues. Warm neutrals will play a big part through to warmer beiges and light taupe tan in 2023 for a softer approach.
PINK AND ROSE
Pink by nature is a colour that promotes tranquillity and healing so it is no wonder that homeowners are now more receptive than ever to this rosy hue. With paint companies like Farrow and Ball and Benjamin Moore all choosing a pink-infused hue as their colour of the year, it seems that 2023 is set to be quite the blushing year.
RICH, DARK COLOURS
Experimenting with bold, dark colours such as chocolate brown, dark jade, ochre and charcoal colours have a wonderful depth to them and you can’t get this from light neutrals. From painted kitchen units, wardrobe doors to feature walls, painted ceilings and all over rooms in dark colours, are a real treat for the eyes.

Claverley farm logs
Claverley Farm Logs is a family business based on the outskirts of the village of Claverley. Brothers Chris and Tim ensure the logs they sell are well seasoned and barn stored ready for you to burn. All of our Barn stored logs are 20% or less moisture and are a mix of oak, ash and Birch. The Kiln dried logs are less than 18% moisture and are ash. Both types are ideal as it is important to burn dry wood so not to damage your burner or chimney. Our logs are also approved by the Woodsure ‘Ready to Burn’
initiative. This approval is testament that our logs are of the highest quality. We sell them in either Bulk Bags or loose Loads (2.5 bags worth) and deliver them up to a 12mile radius of our farm. The majority of our wood is locally sourced and is from well managed woodlands. We look forward to seeing new and existing customers throughout this winter ahead. Please do telephone us for more information or go onto our website where you will see the full range of products that we sell which you can also purchase online.

reduce your heating bills with thermal linings
Do thermal linings work ?
Thermal linings are an effective way to keep heat in your room and cold air out during the winter months. In summer thermal linings also help to keep rooms cooler.
How do they work ?
By creating a pocket of air between the curtain and the window which serves the purpose of preventing warmth from the room seeping out of the window. Thermal curtain lining improves the R-value (the rating of the insulation) while reducing the U-value (thermal transmittance).
Is thermal lining thicker ?
Thermal lining is slightly thicker fabric (210g/m2) then cotton linings (180g/m2).
What is the difference from blackout lining
?
Black out curtains are primarily designed to prevent light penetration through the fabric and so reduce the amount of light entering the room. Thermal curtains are designed to reduce heat loss from the room in the winter and keep the room cooler during the summer.
Do curtains keep heat in better than blinds ?
According to research by the University of Salford, closing thermal lined curtains at dusk will minimise heat loss by 15-17%.
The number for blinds is a little lower at 12-14% but can be less for venetian blinds and shutter due to their slats.

Serendipity
SERENDIPITY IS A ‘ONE OF A KIND ‘ LITTLE SHOP THAT NESTLES WITHIN CODSALL VILLAGE.
Most of its visitors will describe it as an Aladdin’s cave and spend many an hour mooching upstairs and downstairs where both old and new items for your home are displayed in a warm and homely environment.
You will find an array of lamps, cosy throws, candles, ornaments, mirrors, gifts and also unusual outdoor items for your garden.
In 2022, the owner Dee O’Hara, decided to introduce a dress agency into part of the shop which has proven to be a great success.
High-end high street labels and designer brands for both men and women, have been selling well including handbags, shoes and accessories.
(All items are requested to be brought in on hangers, clean, ironed and lightly worn). After many enquiries, Dee has also decided to take in and sell Mother of the Bride outfits on a commission basis and also sell and hire out hats and fascinators for weddings, Ascot and Cheltenham races etc.
Special occasions can be very costly so it seems that it will be a very welcome addition to this growing dress agency.
(Anybody who is interested in bringing in wedding outfits are requested to call the shop first to arrange a time to discuss pricing and displaying).

full potential at old hall
The head of a Shropshire school has announced moves to upgrade its Parents’ Evenings while also sending home more reports to improve efforts to help pupils reach their full potential.
Anna Karacan, who joined Old Hall School in September from Kellett in Hong Kong, said the move was part of an extensive plan, working alongside parents, to create the highest possible standards at the school.
It comes as Mrs. Karacan said she was delighted to have received an “incredible response” to a parents’ survey she issued within her first few weeks in the role.
She said increasing the number of Parents’ Evenings to three each year was one of the first developments she wanted to share following the survey.
Schools in the UK have to provide at least one Parent Evening a year with most holding two.
“We will now hold a Parents’ Evening every term for every year group,” she said.
“I am a fierce advocate of parents who want the best from a school for their children and who are actively engaged in their child’s education and making demands of their child’s school. I believe it is really important that you know how your child is progressing academically and that we as teachers share their strengths and key
points for development, in order to support them together to fulfill their potential.
“More frequent Parents’ Evenings will provide greater opportunity for parents and teachers to come together to talk through a child’s development and look at any areas that do need more focus and those that are real strengths and are an integral part of boosting a child’s confidence across the board.”
The school will also now send a formal report home at the end of each term which will give an Attitude to Learning Grade and a Teacher Assessment Grade.
“I have been so impressed with the community I have seen in action throughout this first part of the Christmas Term. I have also been hugely inspired by the parent’s survey which shows families who care very deeply for and are proud of this school while also eager to help drive forward change so it can build on what it is good at to be even better.
“Together with my team, we are aiming for Old Hall to be a leading school both regionally and nationally in terms of academic standards and pathway programs in drama, sport, and life skills.”
Mrs Karacan said children had really embraced her message of making the most of any opportunity open to them.

new year heralds new extracurricular opportunities
After the excitement of the Christmas festivities we all need something to look forward to in the New Year. Luckily students at Wolverhampton Grammar School have the ideal pick-me-up waiting for them. WGS proudly offers the most varied and plentiful selection of extra-curricular clubs and activities of all the schools in the area.
Students can indulge and explore a huge number of interests, ranging from calligraphy and cooking to photography, Pokémon Go, BBC Young Reporter and Big Band. Many of these opportunities, including Medics Society, student newspaper and the Green Power project, are run by Sixth Formers; providing extra opportunities for leadership, mentoring and enterprise.
What can WGS students look forward to in 2023? With extra-curricular trips firmly back in the calendar there is plenty to tempt those seeking adventure! Perhaps a sports and cultural tour to South Africa? A French trip to Château du Broutel in Northern France, a visit to the First World War battlefield sites at Ypres and the Somme, or even a chance to volunteer at a school in Morocco?
This academic year has already seen three such successful international trips. The spectacular view of the Northern Lights on the Land of Science tour to Iceland will surely be an experience difficult to surpass! This much anticipated trip offered the chance to see some of the natural phenomena studied across all year groups in Science subjects.
The Sports department were busy with two European tours. Boys and girls took part in a Portugal Football Development Tour which provided a golden opportunity to train in world class facilities, interact with elite players and learn from the highly qualified coaches. Further north, 29 Year 8 and 9 girls travelled to Valkenburg in the Netherlands for a Hockey and Netball tour. They enjoyed coaching masterclasses and games against local sides, including playing at the incredible facilities of the Horst Hockey Club. On both tours there was time to appreciate local culture.
This abundance of extra-curricular opportunities is undoubtedly one of the huge benefits of choosing to study at Wolverhampton Grammar School. Why not visit to find out more?

tettenhall college a firm foundation for success
Tettenhall College is a wonderful day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 2 – 18 years of age. Whilst 80% of our pupils are British, with many coming from the local area, we are also home to around 100 boarders, who come from 23 different countries. We allow our pupils to gain a global perspective, whilst enjoying the beautiful campus environment full of outstanding facilities and nestled in our protected woodland.
Tettenhall College is a school that genuinely and successfully combines academic achievement and personal growth, with the very best delivery of pastoral care and an emphasis on kindness, gratitude and good manners. This is what the very best schools do. They allow children to be happy, confident and engaged individuals who are nurtured to love learning, challenge and success.
Firm Foundations for Success
The TC Preparatory Pathways Programme is tailor made to ensure children from the age of 2 upwards progress through a structured and comprehensive learning journey. This continues through the Senior School and into Sixth Form where their own Pathways Programme delivers outstanding levels of success. Each year we delight in seeing our pupils progress to some of the finest universities in the UK and also internationally, leading to professional and successful careers in a wide range of fields.
What Scholarship really means
This educational philosophy underpins the approach to scholarship at Tettenhall College. To be a scholar is a privilege, a reward and a responsibility. Pupils who enter the College at either Year 7, Year 9 or Year 12 are given the opportunity to be assessed for scholarship, and those demonstrating the highest levels of attainment and potential are made awards. All scholars are required to complete tasks each term, to ensure their commitment to ongoing learning and personal growth. However, the fundamental difference at Tettenhall College is that every pupil in the Senior School and Sixth Form has a scholars’ handbook. Every pupil is actively encouraged to demonstrate scholarship in all areas of the curriculum, allowing inclusive learning to lead to the very highest outcomes.

aromatic roast chicken & kale
with wild mushrooms and italian parsley
1 bottle of olive oil
1 packet of maldon sea salt
Chopping board
Sharp knife
INGREDIENTS:
1 medium free range chicken
1 large garlic bulb
30g organic dried turmeric
1 packet of fennel seeds
1 packet of dried chilli flakes
1 tsp of nigella seeds
1 tsp of coriander seeds
1 packet of cracked black peppercorns
1 packet of cavolo nero
1 packet of unsalted butter
1 packet of ceps or chestnut mushrooms
1 packet of flat leaf parsley
1 lemon
EQUIPMENT
Roasting tray Parchment paper
Mixing bowls
Pestle and mortar or pepper mill
Frying pan
Carving knife Small sauce pan Small whisk
Prep time - 20 minutes
Cooking - medium sized chicken 1hr 40 minutes | Setting - Creme fraiche 6 days
METHOD - read through first then measure out all of your ingredients before starting
Turn the oven on to 180oC.
Mix the turmeric with about 50ml of olive oil and rub all over the chicken, season with sea salt and gently toast 1 teaspoon of each of the whole spices for a few minutes in a dry frying pan, allow to cool and roughly crush with the pestle and mortar or pour into mill and give it a twist all over the chicken skin. Place the parsley stalks inside the cavity of the chicken with the whole garlic bulb and a few slices of lemon.
Once the chicken is cooked remove from the tray onto a board, place a piece of foil over it and rest for 20 minutes. Take the garlic out and squeeze the soft garlic puree into the meat juices. If needed use water to deglaze the tray and pour into a pan. Simmer the juices adding a few nobs of butter to emulsify and create the sauce. Slice the mushrooms and gently cook in a nob of butter with a little water and add in chopped parsley leaves and kale leaves. I cut off the very end of the stalk keeping most of it whole but you can remove it all if you prefer. Once the kale has cooked for about 30 seconds plate the kale and mushrooms up carve the chicken breast off the carcass and serve with the sauce. Chop up some parsley to garnish if you like. You can use white wine instead of water in the mushrooms and kale if you like a bit of a boozy flavour. Simmer the left over chicken to make a soup. Serve with a green bean and pesto salad. Add potatoes if you’re not watching your carbs.

new year, new you
This New Year people are indulging in retrospection and re-evaluating some of their life choices. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity for all those who have failed to start making the changes that they said they would make next week, next month, or perhaps when winter starts.
Well, now is your chance to sit down and prepare a list of important lifestyle changes you want to make, and being the charitable and caring bunch that we are here at Lifehack, we’ve decided to give you a bit of help –because since the majority of people fail to stick to their resolution, you’ll need all the help you can get.
GET IN SHAPE
Losing weight is the top resolution for the English, and combined with “exercise more” and “stay fit and healthy” it is something that over a third of the population wishes to achieve. It’s easy enough to start an exercise and diet program, but the trick is to find a decent one that will give you steady results and will be easy to stick to in the long run. Have a look at these tricks, hacks, exercises and mistakes to avoid to make the best our of your resolution.
START EATING HEALTHIER FOOD
This is usually an extension of the previous resolution. Switching to a healthier diet can be incredibly tricky when we are surrounded by cheap junk food. However, with a good amount of determination and some basic tips you can slowly develop healthier eating habits.
Learn to control emotional eating, be aware of reasons for diets to fail, make use of these tricks and have a look at these awesome and healthy recipes.
STOP PROCRASTINATING
The biggest barrier that keeps most people from reaching their goals is the desire to relax and do something fun instead of working hard. Once you get used to procrastinating it’s difficult to snap yourself out of it, so you’ll need to put in a lot of work to change this bad habit. There are many useful tips out there to find your way to stop procrastinating. There are also tools which can help you achieve this task.
MEET NEW PEOPLE
When we get stuck in a rut, we usually end up staying at home most of the time, missing out on a lot of interesting opportunities for networking and having fun. Meeting new people can be beneficial to your mental well-being and help your career, so don’t be afraid to get out there and make some friends. Overcome your shyness, get some knowledge and go and get to know new and interesting people.
BECOME MORE CONFIDENT AND TAKE SOME CHANCES
If you are confident other people notice it, and it is much easier to have your opinions heard, ask people out on dates and get ahead at work. A good dose of
36
self-confidence will help you lead a much happier life overall. Don’t hesitate to get some input on ways to boost your confidence.
EARN MORE MONEY
Even billionaires are always looking for ways to earn more money, and we common folk can definitely use an additional source of income to make life a bit more comfortable. Fortunately there are plenty of options available, like having sidejobs, working as a freelancer or using the internet to your advantage.
REDUCE STRESS
They say that stress is one of the biggest killers out there, and it can have a very destructive effect on your relationships as well as your health. It may be an unavoidable side effect of our hectic modern lifestyles, but it can be effectively managed with the help of useful, unconventional and easy to practice tricks.
LEARN TO BE HAPPIER WITH YOUR LIFE
Even those that are in decent shape, make a good living and have stress under control can still be unhappy. It takes time and patience to learn how to find joy in the little things and not to let problems bring you down.
GET MORE QUALITY SLEEP
With big TV’s, computers, smartphones, tablets and all sorts of gadgets with glowing lights and beeping alerts,
it can be hard to get enough sleep at night. You should be gunning for at least 8 hours of sleep a night, and there are fairly simple ways to achieve this number if you make use of science and everyday hacks.
WATCH LESS TV
The average person wastes a lot of time in front of the TV, time that could have been better spent developing skills, learning or keeping your body active. Once you manage to cut down on TV time, you will realize just how long and productive a day can really be.
HAVE BETTER SEX
Any healthy relationship requires a good deal of intimacy, and sex can actually help keep us mentally and physically healthy. The idea is to make it a fun and rewarding experience, and this is something that comes with practice and exercise.
SPEND MORE TIME WITH THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER
There is just too little time in this life for us to waste it on insincere, duplicitous and toxic people. We should focus on the people who we care about deeply and who care about us, as this is the best way to stay happy.

30 FABULOUS YEARS AT ROYSTON BLYTHE
When the world of hairdressing is constantly changing, it is a breath of fresh air to visit a salon and see the same faces, people that get to know you and your families and who build close relationships. The longstanding team at Royston`s have shared their clients’ lives including the highs, the lows and are not only their hairdressers but also their friends.
Royston Blythe started with a team of three 32 years ago but over the years they have grown a team of loyal and dedicated colleagues that have been instrumental in the success of the business.
ONE VERY SPECIAL TEAM MEMBER IS RITA MASON
Celebrating 30 years is the fabulous Rita; the Jackie Onassis of the salon. Infamous for her chic style, RB`s first receptionist in 1992 ran this incredibly busy salon single-handedly and is mother to the team. She knows everyone in Wolverhampton! With her flair and elegance, clients regularly seek her fashion advice. She is a fountain of knowledge (including home interiors), life issues and finds positivity in every situation.
At 80 this year (would you believe it?) she is the essence of the salon and is still at the helm on the busiest days to welcome all and keep an eye on the smooth running of the salon.
To celebrate this milestone, Nick and Royston invited Rita, her gorgeous daughters, close friends and the team to Sunday lunch and party afterwards. Nick`s heartfelt words did ensure there was not a dry eye in the house but once the singer started, Rita was first up on the dance floor and was the last one standing!

WE ASKED RITA...
`What is your favourite memory from the last 30 years? `
“I thank my best friend Jackie for introducing me to Nick and Royston. She said you will love working with these boys, and I have never looked back. We have shared both the sad times and the good, but the lad’s generosity and kindness has always been at the heart of everything. It has never felt like work with lovely clients to chat to. I laugh every day and I hope the fun never ends.”
Nick and Royston replied, “Rita is incredibly special to us. She has defended and supported us throughout the years and is a true and loyal friend. We share so many memories, funny ones, naughty ones, and the characters we still miss over the years. We just want her to carry on forever! Our only regret was that our lovely friend Jackie Taylor couldn`t be with us today (you were missed) to celebrate our Rita but we sent her all our love.”
After visiting the salon, I now appreciate why Royston Blythe is described as a family. It is a unique salon. Ladies, whatever your age, whoever you are, you will always be made to feel welcome and leave feeling fabulous.

dreaming of longer days and warmer weather?
With Christmas done for another year and winter now fully set in, many of us are starting to dream of the return of longer days and warmer weather. What better way to do this than by booking your next summer holiday. January and February are historically one of the busiest times for bookings in the travel industry and therefore there are generally good deals to be found. If you’re looking at booking some summer sun, here is some inspiration to help you decide the best destination for you.

Spain
Spain continues to be a hugely popular destination for holiday makers from the UK, with a huge variety of options to suit all tastes. Whether you are looking to travel to one of the islands of the Canaries or Balearics, or pop over to the mainland, the variety of options across Spain ensures there is something for everyone. With relatively short flight times and numerous flight options from UK airports, it remains a great option for families, for those looking for nightlife, or for those looking to explore its cultural and historic sites.
Spain is an extremely diverse country with passionate people and amazing cuisine and wine. It offers fabulous beaches; a wonderful climate, with options all year round; amazing cities to explore; world-famous festivities; and numerous historical sites.
With its fantastic climate, delightful beaches, relaxed way of life and fascinating ancient history, Greece has options for everyone. The biggest question is which island do you choose, or why not island hop and see a few. From the larger islands of Crete and Corfu, to the smaller islands of Santorini and Mykonos, and everything in between, you will not be disappointed. Greece enjoys one of Europe’s warmest climates with much sunshine and little rainfall.
Greece Cyprus
With its proximity to the landmass of Asia, Cyprus is one of the hottest parts of Europe, so if you’re after the sun, sea and beaches, Cyprus is a fantastic choice for you. However, in addition to this, Cyprus also offers fascinating ancient history as well as the amazing scenery of the pine-clad Troodos Mountains and Mount Olympus.

Turkey is an increasingly popular destination for summer holidays, with a huge array of amazing hotels offering 5-star luxury at affordable prices. If you are looking for all-inclusive luxury with activities for all the family and guaranteed sunshine, then Turkey is the place for you.
However, Turkey offers far more than this. With worldfamous archaeological sites and monuments, sitting side by side with the natural beauty of pine forested hillsides, formidable mountain ranges and long, wide beaches, Turkey has activities to suit everyone.
Italy
With its fabulous climate, beautiful scenery and magnificent architecture, it’s not surprising Italy has been a favourite place for British holidaymakers for many years. Not to mention the amazing food! With the amazing coastlines of Sorrento and the Amalfi coast or Tuscany; the islands of Sardinia and Sicily; the many Lakes; and the cities of Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan or Verona, to name a few. Italy again is a country with something for everyone, but where do you visit first?
With history, culture and spectacular scenery, it’s not surprising Croatia has become one of Europe’s most intriguing and rewarding holiday destinations. More than one hundred of its beaches enjoy blue flag status. They are mostly pebble and shingle and the waters are clean and crystal clear. Inland there are beautiful pine forests, ancient olive groves and vineyards, and fragrant lavender fields alongside the stunning lakes and waterfalls. And then you have the charming towns, pretty fishing villages and numerous UNESCO World heritage sites. It’s no wonder Croatia should be on everyone’s list of places to visit.

IhopeyouallhadagreatChristmas,andIwish youallahappyandhealthy2023.
The new year brings new flower trends and designers creating designs to inspire couples in the world of wedding flowers and styling. In my wedding flower orders, I have already noticed a very big increase in weddings throughout the year and not just for the summer months, as couples are selecting spring and autumn weddings. This is great for florists as in addition to us working with fabulous summer blooms, our selection and creativity then absorbs the natural and delicate spring flowers for weddings at the start of the year through to the extreme of autumnal weddings where we use stronger flowers and textures such as berries, oak leaves, carthamus and pussy willow. I really feel lucky to have such an amazing job.

WHAT IS MY BIRTH FLOWER?
Every month has a birth flower with its very own special meaning. It is thought that birth month flowers originated in Roman times when birthday celebrations first began. This can be extremely useful when choosing the perfect flowers for a loved one:
JANUARY - CARNATION AND SNOWDROP
The January birth flowers are carnation and snowdrop.
Carnations are a true favourite. They come in a variety of colours and make a lovely addition to any bouquet of flowers because of their long lasting freshness. The carnation flower symbolises love, captivation and distinction.
Snowdrops are appropriate either as an expression of celebration or as an expression of sympathy. The snowdrop flower symbolises purity, innocence and sympathy.
FEBRUARY - VIOLET AND IRIS
The February birth flowers are Violet and Iris.
February is always associated with Valentine’s Day and it always surprises people when they find out that roses are not officially the birth flower of the month.
Violets symbolise delicate love, affection, modesty, faith, nobility, intuition and dignity. The blue variation symbolises love and faithfulness, white violets represent purity and chastity and yellow violets represent high worth and goodness.
Irises are large, colourful and beautiful flowers. They symbolise wisdom, hope, trust & valour.
VALENTINE’S DAY
Tuesday, 14th February 2023, will be a huge event in our florist calendar our most popular bouquet being the ‘True Romantic’ which consists of 12 long-stemmed beautiful red roses embedded in lush foliages. Red roses symbolise LOVE; what better way to treat your loved one.

“Beautifulflowers,always”
As we get closer to Christmas I have started looking at party outfits and fabulous accessories. Hopefully this year, we can enjoy a normal party season! I didn’t have to look very far for beautiful jewellery. Elie Top has created a beautiful collection for Zara and as gold jewellery is back on trend, it’s a perfect treat or gift for a stylish friend. Fabulous eye-popping colour is still key so don’t be a shrinking violet. Make sure you buy statement pieces to last all season!
I am always drawn to anthropologie.com as they have different brands under one roof, selling unique & very individual pieces, like this corset-shaped sweatshirt by Pilco. Look out for fringing & feathers along with shiny fabrics in casual styles. Bags are still quilted, but check out the new grab bag from River Island. We have all got black boots, so look out for something different. These leather boots from Zara have a metal flower on the toe, very on trend!

Fat Dissolving injections are a safe, effective treatment that reduces fat cells in the treated area. It produces long lasting results, which means you can banish those annoyingly wobbly bits. It can be used to treat exercise resistant, pockets of fat around the chin, chest, abdomen, thighs, knees and ankles. It is very effective for body contouring.
Whilst the body can regenerate fat cells - the process is very slow. So once fat cells are removed from a localised area your results are as good as permanent. However, if you do not continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle then your body will put on weight in other areas of your body where fat cells remain.
Lipolis 7 collapses fat within the legs, abdomen and buttocks at first and then rejuvenates throughout the body especially the face. After the fat is collapsed by cavitation, Radio Frequency melts the fat further. Different handles are used in different parts of the body. Radio Frequency continues tightening the skin, which improves orange peel. The effect of skin rejuvenation is very evident. Finally a hollow handle massages rhythmically imitating human hands to dissolve small pieces fat, which promotes the lymphatic system to eliminate the toxins out of the body.

Chilblains are small, itchy, painful lumps that develop on the skin as an abnormal response to cold weather and they are usually red or purplish . Anyone can get chilblains at any age. They are common in children as they are in elderly people. They can come up if the skin is warmed up too quickly after it has been exposed to the cold for example with a hot water bottle or by sitting very close to a fire and can be itchy and sore. The tiny blood vessels under the skin narrow when the skin gets cold and the blood supply can become very slow, this can cause areas of inflammation and swelling.

change your world, your look, your thoughts
As 2023 starts, many of us see a significant increase in weight, as we looked to food for comfort over recent years of restrictions. Now is a great time for positive change.
New Year’s resolutions come and go, but LighterLife has spent over 30 years developing a nutritionally complete Very Low-Calorie Diet for safe, effective and rapid weight loss, a unique mindfulness approach and a personal mentor like me to support you, weekly friendly virtual sessions, a WhatsApp group for clients, and all the LighterLife support.
The reason that so many ‘ordinary’ diets fail is because they don’t tackle the reasons behind why people overeat in the first place. They suggest the answers are in the food and focus on calories and complex foodplans. LighterLife offers a weight management plan to suit your weight loss needs that doesn’t just include meal replacement products but access to our unique behaviour change programme.
With LighterLife you can lose a stone a month, every month so if you start your LighterLife adventure today you could lose 3 stone by Easter and another 3 stone by the summer holidays.
We’ve a range of plans depending on how quickly you want to lose weight, all leading to personalised Management plans to help you achieve a healthy, balanced way of eating for life with on-going support.

is it time for new ears for new years?
Christmas has come and gone and it may have been harder to enjoy the family fun, if you couldn’t join in due to not being able to hear very well. Hearing loss is often realised when there is extra noise, hustle and bustle and parties – sounds you can’t turn up and down.
If this was you or a loved one, why not have those ears checked for FREE by our professional hearing care team and let us help you hear those all-important sounds of life in 2023?
It may be as simple as having your ears unblocked or trying a new hearing solution you didn’t know about. Better hearing should be and can be simple.
Did you know ears not only help you hear, but also aid balance?
Older adults, with hearing loss, are 3 times more likely to experience falls than those with good hearing. Falls can have an impact on our physical and mental health with pain, distress, and the loss of both confidence and independence occurring as a result.
Studies have shown that there is an association between age-related hearing loss and the increased risk of mobility-related problems including walking difficulties, slower gait speed, loss of balance, and falls. We know there are other factors that could increase the chance of a fall but improving someone’s hearing can really help reduce the risk.
At any of our ‘Hear in’ clinics we can help by offering both ear wax removal and FREE hearing assessments where you will be given the best possible independent advice without obligation.
As a local, family business we pride ourselves on our excellent, professional service and our clinic facilities are second to none. All hearing aid solutions come with a 60-day money back guarantee and also interest free finance available for up to 12 months*. You really do have nothing to lose by trying, and we are with you every step of the way. *subject to credit check
We are lucky to be able to make a difference to peoples listening lives every single day. It’s what we love, it’s what we do!
Why not get in touch and start this New Year with new ears!

intervenor claims “the bank of mom and dad”
In view of property prices increasing, it is getting more difficult for young couples to get on the property ladder which is resulting in relatives contributing towards the deposit in order to assist them purchase their first home. This can lead to problems further down the line if a couple decides to divorce or sell the property.
In cases where parties decide to divorce, the relative who has contributed towards the deposit can attempt to claim the monies back by way of claiming they have a “beneficial interest” in the property. Alternatively, the party to the marriage whose relative has contributed can make an application to the court that their relative be joined into the Financial Remedy Proceedings as an Intervenor (third party) to the proceedings. Intervenor proceedings can be very costly and usually involve a contested hearing where parties give evidence to the court in relation to their claim. This can be easily remedied if, at the time of the purchase,
clarification of the deposit monies is sought as to whether it is being gifted outright. If this is the case, a Deed of Gift can be drawn up and signed by the parties. If, on the other hand, the relative is not intending the deposit monies to be given as a gift, a Trust Deed could be drawn up at the time of the conveyance to define each parties share of the property and subsequently avoid expensive litigation at a later date.

thinking about retirement when you are 50 and over - ten tips to think about
Reaching age 50 is pivotal age for most of us. Hitting 50 evokes all sorts of thoughts, thinking about not working forever and retirement often comes to mind. Age 50 is the wake-up call. Here are my top ten planning tips which we share with clients.
1. Understand clearly what you have saved so far
Start by requesting information from your pension providers about the values and where it is invested.
2. Will you still live in the same home when you retire?
Some people move to a new place, some never to move, and some downsize. Think about what you want to happen and start planning.
3. When do you plan to retire?
Most will not receive a State Pension until age 67. But many of us want to retire or
semi retire before this age. How will you fill the gap?
4. How much will you spend each month now?
What the State Pension providess will not be enough to live on. Calculate how much money you are spending now, to better understand how much your life costs each month.
5. How much will you spend each month in retirement?
Now calculate what your income in retirement will need to be. Remove costs such as your mortgage if this will be paid off and add in any new retirement costs.
6. Do you think you will have enough saved?
If you think that your retirement savings will not be sufficient, if you can increase your monthly amount, start now. The longer you invest for, the better.
66 finance
7. Consider your wife/husband or partner
If you will be sharing the monthly expenditure in retirement with your other half, consider their situation as well. How much will they be contributing each month?
8. Keep your plans under review
Taking retirement planning seriously should start at age 50 if you haven’t already. Checking your pension regularly is a good habit to get into. Most pensions can be viewed online.
9. How will you take income from your pension?
It is possible to withdraw income directly from your pension. You can still choose an annuity, which will provide a guaranteed income for the rest of your life. Which option would work best for you?
10. Are you invested in the right investments?
It is really important to make sure that your pension investments are invested in the right funds for you. Understanding how much risk you are taking and if your investments are performing is now really important.
Action Call
If you are on track and are confident that all is in order, that’s great. However, if you concerned about your plans for retirement, now is the time to take action. Delaying only makes the problem harder to solve if something needs to be fixed.

planning for the future
A new year can bring about a renewed focus. You might be in the process of purchasing your first home, getting married or having children. These milestones tend to focus our minds on the future and ensuring that our family is provided for in the event that we are incapacitated or die. The best way to do this is through estate planning with a trusted solicitor.
What is an ‘estate’
An estate consists of everything you own, for example your home, other property, savings accounts, investments, life insurance, and other personal possessions.
What is a Will?
A Will is a legal document in which a person (Testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.
What is Trust?
A trust is a legal arrangement for holding and managing your assets.
This can be a useful way to ensure that assets are retained in the family, particularly when the beneficiary is under the age of 18, vulnerable or cannot handle their own
affairs. Trusts have their own specific tax implications which should be explored at the outset.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney
A lasting power of attorney allows your appointed attorney(s) to make decision about your financial affairs or health and care. It comes into effect in the event that you lose mental capacity or you are unable to make decisions for yourself. You can restrict the decisions your attorney can make and state that the lasting power of attorney only comes into force if you lose mental capacity.
This can give you peace of mind to know that your attorney will make sure that your financial affairs and health and care needs are met in the event that you lose mental capacity.
For a no obligation discussion, please feel free to call Kenneth Jones on 01902 745772 or email gavin@kenneth-jones.co.uk.

winter wonders and warnings for pets
Winter is upon us and wow is it cold! We really need to wrap up warm and make sure we take care of ourselves properly and ensure that we are getting the right vitamins. Our pets need extra care too, dogs get cold just like we do! If your dogs’ ears are cold especially around the edges this means that they are a bit chilly too, so get them warmed up.
Why not make a bone broth for your cat or dog, you might enjoy some yourself too. After you’ve eaten your roast chicken, simply boil the chicken carcass up and simmer for a couple of hours, strain and then safely dispose of the bones so that animals can’t get to them. (Cooked chicken bones can be a dangerous choking hazard and can splinter). You are then left with the broth which is full of wonderful nutrients that may help give you and your fury ones a winter immune system boost. Offer your dog or cat a small amount on a separate saucer, you can serve it slightly warm, just tepid, so that it gives your dog and cat a nice warm glowing feeling and of course a nutritional boost.
When out and about be mindful that Antifreeze is poisonous to dogs and cats, they can be tempted to lick it as it tastes so sweet but sadly it would only take a little taste to kill so please take care not to spill any yourself and keep an eye on your precious ones. Wash your dogs’ feet off after a walk, especially if the gritters have been out because rock salt is actually harmful to dogs,
it can cause burns/frostbite in their pads and may also make them poorly if they lick it off themselves. Rabbits and some other pets that live outside, will need to be brought in from the cold and put in a garage or conservatory, make sure that they have extra hay for bedding and cover part of their hutch and runs to help provide more insulation. Pets can burn more calories in the cold weather so you may need to increase what you feed them. Check their water regularly, especially water bottles as these may freeze particularly at the end, you may need to press the end in every could of hours to make sure it’s still working.
Don’t forget to spare a thought for the wildlife and pop some fresh water and food out for them if you are able to. Remember, as well as wild bird seed and nuts from the pet shop, you could pop out some kitchen scraps such as cooked peas, cooked unsalted bacon and beef fat, apples and pears and cooked eggs. Ensure you chop the scraps up in to small pieces or crush them. keep each other safe and snuggly, remember the warnings and enjoy the winter wonders!!!
Do not feed bone broth if your dog or cat has related allergies or have any other medical issues that need to be taken in to consideration. Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

a new year, a new season
As we say farewell to another Christmas and herald in a new year, it’s time to start
for the coming season.
Seed potatoes usually arrive at the start of the year, weather permitting – buy them in January, if possible, as the most popular varieties soon sell. Once you get them home, put them to chit (allow shoots to form) in old egg trays. Place them in a light, cool and frost-free environment. You can start seed potatoes growing in pots inside as early as you like, so long as they are protected from frost.
If you haven’t used winter wash on your fruit trees yet, it’s important to do this every year to clear up any pests and their eggs left overwintering on your trees. Choose a mild day before the buds start to burst.
If snow and hard frosts arrive, make sure vulnerable plants such as Hebe, Phormium, Cordyline, palms and tree ferns are covered with fleece. Remember to make sure outdoor taps are lagged and covered over in the
winter to prevent any cracking and leaks caused by freezing.
If you want to start something off early in the greenhouse, try sowing some sweet pea seeds in a cool environment. Use a seed compost and sow them into posts, two to three seeds per pot. When they’re ready for planting out, the roots will have grown through the pot and it’s then very easy to just pop the plant into the ground or a container.
Look out for signs of colour in your garden: plants such as hamamelis (witch hazel), snowdrops, viburnum tinus and hellebores will all show signs that suggest spring is on its way.
Don’t forget our feathered friends, especially if the weather is poor – stock your bird table with peanuts, seed, mealworms, fat balls and feeders. Clean off bird tables regularly and remember to put out fresh water daily.

hyundai i20 n
There can be little doubt that the Hyundai manufacturer is on a role, the i20 N has just recently been named the best Top Hatch in the Car Buyer Awards of 2023, writes Bob Hickman.
The i20 N has been a resounding success for the Hyundai brand, it has reintroduced the hot hatch to the market place that those of us of a certain age were saddened when it went in to a demise but perhaps the worm is turning and the day of the hot hatch is returning.
Car Buyer describe the i20 N as practical enough to be used every day but with bags of performance and engaged handling and they suggest that if you are after a hot hatch brimming with personality, then this is the one that should be at the top of your list.
The Hyundai i20 N is a superb performer. It certainly looks the part, it has huge spoilers, body kits and excessive looking wings. You could consider it to be a bit OTT, a bit like the Civic Type R but to those purists who like a sporty car that performs it will be a delight.
The interior has seats that hug you like that long lost Aunt, because after all this is a sporty derivative and thrives on being driven firmly, progressively, with an exhilarating feel in and around country lanes. Surprisingly enough there is quite a bit of space within the vehicle and passengers have not been overlooked. The suggestion that this is a sporty vehicle is obvious as soon as you look at the aluminium pedals that control the vehicle. The dashboard and instrumentation are quite complicated with various modes and buttons to choose from. It will go from Normal, Ecco or a Power Mode, everything suddenly lights up in red and the performance, steering, braking is all tweaked by the on-board computer system.
Whilst the i20 N looks and feels the part, the main feature without doubt is the engine. It is a 1.6-litre turbo charged, 4-cylinder, producing 204bhp.It has power in abundance, a top speed is claimed at 142mph and the 0-60 gallop can be achieved in just marginally over 6 seconds.
Whilst the vehicle is undoubtedly sporty, the driving aspect is quite sublime, you have rear parking sensors and a rear camera making it easier to park, the steering is on the heavy side is as you would expect from a vehicle of a sporty nature. The suspension is on the stiff side, and if you are not a lover of bouncy type suspension you may need to take a long test run.
The Pirelli Zero tyres grip the road leech-like in all conditions and on a particular sojourn in to the twisty, A and B roads in Shropshire, on a wet damp day, they really did come in to their own.
Hyundai have not skimped on interior features, a quite extensive list of standard features include, heated front seats, a wireless charging pad for your phone, cruise control, a 10.3inch touchscreen with satellite navigation that was an absolute delight to operate, Apple Car Play and Android Auto is a feature, add further to the equation a DAB radio and Blue Tooth Connectivity and you start to have a vehicle that in addition to being very sporty, it is also a friendly companion. There can be little doubt that when you purchase a i20 N you will need to sit for some time and wade your way through the on-line tutorial, there are a plethora of switches and buttons on the steering wheel and you need to take time to understand fully just what they will do.
The i20 N comes with an extensive 5-year unlimited warranty mileage and is priced currently at £24,995 on the road, the hot hatch is back and in the capable hands of Hyundai.

skoda kamiq monte carlo
The market place is awash with SUV’S, some of them are so large as to be almost a nuisance as to where to park and what to do with them, but within small SUV’S Skoda have introduced the Kamiq, writes Bob Hickman.
It is an excellent small SUV, with a reasonably spacious cabin and a superb number of high-tech features. Skoda have ensured that the Kamiq is going to be a pleasant companion, the cockpit is in keeping with most Skoda’s, it is more sensible and reassuring than having lots of odd features. One is the virtual cockpit, as Skoda is part of the mighty VAG group they have borrowed this idea from Audi. It replaces normal dials that you would see directly in front of your line of sight with digital configurations.
My particular derivative had a 9.2-inch screen fitted in the centre of the dashboard, it was bright, clear, very easy to use and it was a pleasure to be able to navigate through it without getting lost with too many options. Talking of equipment, Apple Car Play and Android Auto for those persons who still prefer to use their own smart phone equipment is also included.
All the vehicles within the Kamiq range have height adjustable driver’s seat, and on certain models upward they have height adjustable for the passenger seat, so you can get comfy no matter what your size or stature. The steering wheel from a driver’s perspective moves in and out as well as up and down, so again a comfort feature. I like the factor that all the controls are centrally positioned and very easy to use, yes you do need to take your time with the plethora of equipment that is controlled by the steering wheel. Skoda have gone over the top by the amount of storage, huge door bins, big glove box, cup holders between the front seats, and various other cup holders which will hold a bottle.
If the Kamiq is on your shopping list and you are a diesel lover then sadly you will have to look elsewhere. The Kamiq is only available with 2 petrol derivatives. A 95bhp 1.0 litre or a 110bhp 1.0 litre, which is the test car that I was privileged to utilise for a week. It also has a 150bhp 1.5 litre petrol which is
very lively performer.
My particular derivative was equipped with the brilliant VAG DSG automatic gearbox which always seemed to know the correct ratio for whatever circumstances.
The Kamiq has really been pigeon holed in to the comfort sector and the suspension is such that it soaked up bumps without any problem whatsoever. It is never a vehicle to take on twisty B roads, to try and prove that it had a sporty connotation, it is more at home cruising on motorways and A roads. The big bonus is that it does have quite a tight turning circle, useful on car park and in manoeuvrability situations where you are wanting to turn the car around quickly.
The Kamiq has a reasonable amount of cargo space, 400 litre boot, drop the rear seats down and it increases to quite a healthy 1400 litres and it proved to be a very willing companion for numerous trips to the tip to assist a friend of mine who had done a garage makeover.
There can be little doubt over the years Skoda have come on in leaps and bounds and the Kamiq is a good build quality, the plastics are nice and tactile to the touch. If you do want to be one of the green fraternities then you have to look for your vehicle elsewhere as the Kamiq is not available currently as either a hybrid or an electric.
The Kamiq Monte Carlo, the test vehicle, was equipped with a 1-litre engine producing 110bhp, it has a CO2 figure of 137, a top speed of 123mph and the 0-60 gallop could be achieved in just marginally over 10 seconds.
The list of standard features on the Monte Carlo version is extremely extensive, a particularly like the 18” black alloy wheels, they seem to set off the Velvet Red paintwork, brilliantly. The electronic equipment fitted as standard to the Monte Carlo included rear parking sensors, rear camera and of course the Skoda’s novel feature on certain models, an umbrella in the driver’s door and a torch in the boot.
The Kamiq Monte Carlo as tested, is priced at £28,810 on the road.

COLLAGEN DROPS.
GREAT TASTE & FAST RESULTS
Made in England with over 10 years of research
EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF COLLAGEN AND HYALURONIC ACID COMBINED!
Collagen is found in abundance in younger skin; it’s what helps preserve its elasticity.
As we age the amount diminishes – in fact, by the time we’re 50 we’ve already lost up to a third, leading to a dry complexion and signs of ageing. Our Heaven Collagen Drops help boost lost collagen… and then some.
Our skin cells naturally produce hyaluronic acid to maintain healthy moisture levels. By using products that contain this super powered ingredient, your complexion will look more youthful and radiant, and feel softer.
Don’t just take our word for it; research shows when taken consistently as a supplement, hyaluronic acid can decrease the appearance of fine lines, reverse sun damage and even boost nail strength.
