Decorating with Patterens Patterns give personality to a space so doesn’t be afraid to use them. Pattern 2 should combine colours of the first fabric but be smaller scale pattern.

Here are 5 mixing pattern tips.

Tip 1 Pattern designs, as a rule of thumb 3 patterns together is always a good place to start.

Pattern 3 should be a complimentary shade or neutral textured piece but this scale should be the smallest pattern.

Choose prints and patterns with one colour in common, for a look that feels coordinated but not too matched’.

super swimming at old hall “Fortunately, thanks to having a fabulous swimming pool on-site, which we share with Wrekin College, we have been able to maintain swimming lessons in strict class bubbles throughout the time the school has been open,” said Mr Stott.

A Shropshire headteacher has backed calls to get children back in the pool as he described the benefits of swimming as “almost immeasurable”. Martin Stott, the headteacher at Old Hall School in Wellington, said they had doubled their efforts to ensure swimming lessons remained ring-fenced in the weekly diary knowing it was a skill that actively saved lives.

“Our online learning has also ensured the children are all relatively on track academically, meaning we have not needed to sacrifice our swimming time to help them catch up on other key skills.

Swim England, the sport’s governing body, recently called on parents and schools to get children swimming again as they released statistics that showed five million swimming sessions were lost during the pandemic.

“The benefits to the children are almost immeasurable - not only in terms of exercise but also for their mental well-being and the fact this is a skill which actively saves lives.” Most children at the school can swim 25 metres confidently by the age of seven and will take part in competitive swimming events and galas where they earn points for their house from as early as the age of five.

Mr Stott said they had been fortunate at Old Hall that while the schools were allowed to open, swimming sessions had continued in strict class bubbles. “At Old Hall, every child swims at least once a week from the moment they start in reception and many go on to take part in extra swim squad sessions as they progress through the school,” added Mr Stott.

By the time they are aged seven, some of them will be swimming competitively against other schools and even go on to compete at regional and national levels.

“It’s a part of the weekly timetable that is so important to us that we will do everything in our power to ring-fence it in the school calendar throughout the year. Those efforts have doubled as swimming has come under threat elsewhere thanks to a series of national lockdowns.”

International Gymnast, Gabriella W (Year 10), National Cricketer, Davina P (Year 9) and National Cheerleading Champion, Scarlett W (Year 9), have maintained strict training regimes and faced challenging practise environments, emerging as even more esteemed and celebrated Sportswomen.

Having been selected for Team England prior to Lockdown 1.0, Scarlett, who lives in Bridgnorth, has continued to attend seven virtual classes a week alongside numerous strength and conditioning sessions. Competitions have recently concentrated on individual skills and Scarlett won a national ‘turning’ competition via her submission entry online. She continues to upload weekly videos of her choreography to team England and is looking forward to travelling internationally with the squad once restrictions lift.

With gymnasiums having to close their doors through the pandemic, fervent gymnasts have faced true motivational challenges, with no apparatus or gym space to practise. Gabriella, from Wednesfield, made it her mission to use this unique period to hone her core skills and form through daily zoom sessions, resulting in her fitness and sporting condition being at a record high. Gabriella is now en-route to being selected for the Commonwealth Games, 2022.

INGREDIENTS • •

500g of salmon fillet from the middle of the fish with the skin off - ask your fishmonger - I get my fish from Nick at Goughs in tettenhall 50g maldon sea salt

50g Demerara sugar 1 bunch of dill - take of the stalks and chop them up finely - save the fronds of dill for later 1 tsp of pink peppercorns 1 tsp of lightly crushed fennel seeds

Pat the fish dry with a paper towel. Mix your salt, sugar and spices together in a bowl. Place cling film in the bottom of a rectangle glass container or a plastic container will do. Pour half the salt mix over the cling film in the bottom of the container. Place the salmon on the salt mix and pour the rest over the top of the salmon. Make sure the fish is equally coated with the salt mix. Wrap the cling film around the salmon to seal and place in the fridge for 3 days. Turn it over everyday. After 3 days it will feel tougher and when unwrapping it watch out for the liquid, do it near the sink. Rinse the salmon under the cold tap and pat dry with kitchen roll. When ready to serve slice the salmon as thinly as you like it. BRINING INGREDIENTS

1 fennel A few radish 500ml of water 50g maldon sea salt

250ml of vinegar 25g demerara sugar Half lemon skin zest julienne - there is a tool that makes this easy - email me mike@takefood.co.uk for the link. 500ml of water 50g maldon sea salt

Thinly slice the fennel and radish Julienne the lemon - you can cut the peel off carefully with a sharp knife and then cut into strips or use a julienne peeler. Dissolve the salt in the water and submerge the veg in the water then leave in fridge for 24 hours. The next day drain the brining liquid from the fennel and rinse the fennel well to remove the salt Pack into a sterilised glass jar - to sterilise the jar simply wash in hot soapy water, rinse off and dry in oven at 120oC for about 15 minutes. Remove rubber seal if your jar has one. You can use Milton which is easier. Heat the vinegar, sugar and spices until the sugar has dissolved and pour into the jar making sure it covers the veg. Leave in the fridge until your salmon is cured. INGREDIENTS •

Mix these 2 ingredients together well in a bowl. Done. Serve with slices of Milwaukee rye bread or another dark rye bread, fronds of dill and a few capers as a buffet so everyone can get stuck in and share or if you prefer you can make them up ready to eat.

USEFUL INFO Preparation time: 30mins Cook time: 30mins (plus minimum 30mins marinading) Pre-heat your grill to medium. Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees (side dish dependant)

Equipment: Non stick baking dish, medium mixing bowl, metal tongs, sharp knife, 1x tablespoon, 1x teaspoon, scissors, colander, 4x serving dishes, pastry brush.

½ celeriac 2tbsps full fat mayonnaise Handful of fresh chives 2tsps mild curry powder 1tsp white wine vinegar 1tsp rock salt

8x rashers back bacon 3tbsps maple syrup Black pepper

METHOD - read through first then measure out all of your ingredients before starting •

If serving a potato side dish prepare and cook as appropriate.

Peel and slice the celeriac into thin strips, place in a bowl with salt. Set aside for at least 10 minutes.

In a bowl mix mayonnaise chopped chives, vinegar, pepper and curry powder. Set aside.

Thoroughly was off the celeriac to remove all the salt (the celeriac should have softened slightly.) Add to the mayonnaise mixture and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (the longer the better)

Place the bacon in our ovenproof dish and cover with syrup place on the lowest shelf under the heat. Cook slowly, occasionally basting with the syrup.

Prepare and cook your green vegetables.

•

Once most of the syrup has coated the bacon and the edges start to caramelise, remove from the grill and rest for 2 minutes.

Place the bacon on a serving dish and drizzle over any remaining pan juices.

•

Decant the celeriac and serve.

•

Complete your chosen sides and dig in!

They hunted around charity and antique shops….explored Ebay and that gave me some great items to incorporate. I especially liked the red glass apple in Snow White and the carriage and glass slipper in Cinderella. The Bride and Grooms head table was fully themed as Tangled. We added yellow lanterns, Tiara and leather satchel. Touches of wood and floral detail really worked well……what do you think?

But this can also be a hazardous time for our precious ones, doggie dangers lurk in the summer! Dogs can overheat when it’s too hot so it’s best to go for your walk early in the morning or late evening. Check the pavement to ensure that it isn’t too hot for your lovely one to walk on, a dog’s pads are sensitive and every year many poor souls end up at the Vets suffering with burnt paws. Ideally take a water bottle out with you so that your dog can have little sips of water if they want them. Ensure that you avoid going out with your dog all together between 12 and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest and if it’s too hot at other times then don’t walk at all.

Lurking in the long grass may be another summer danger! Ticks can be found all year round but summer is the most common time to for dogs to pick them up when they are racing through grass, shrubs or even piles of leaves. Tick bites can be uncomfortable and in unfortunate cases the dog can have an allergic reaction or worse contract tick transmitting diseases such as Lyme disease. It’s best practice to thoroughly brush your dog and then check them over after a walk especially under their front and back legs as well as in between their toes. More obscure places to look are their ears, eyelids and tails. If you find a tick it needs to be removed carefully, ask your Vet for advice if necessary.

Never leave your dog in a car on a warm day even if the window is open or the car is parked in the shade because this is still dangerous for a dog, they can overheat very quickly. Certain breeds of dogs are more at risk of heat stroke especially brachycephalic breeds (flat faced) like English Bulldogs and Pugs. Puppies and old dogs, long haired dogs, dark coated dogs, overweight dogs and those with medical conditions are also amongst those that are likely to suffer more easily so take care not to walk when it’s too hot.

time to get gardening Hopefully as we progress through the warmer months the weather will settle down. After being warm, then cold and warm again during May, plants could do with a settled period of sunshine – with some rain at night of course.

Delphiniums and the butterfly loving Verbena bonanariensis and the ever popular perennial Geraniums. Hostas are good for a shady spot with their coloured foliage, watch out for the slugs though, especially if the ground is damp.

As we move from June into July and August there’s still time to plant larger pots of Geraniums, Fuchsias, Cosmos and Dahlias to fill in any gaps in borders. Water to get established and feed on a weekly basis. Dead head regularly and you’ll have colour through to the first autumn frosts, which hopefully will be late starting.

Now is a good time to add new plants to your pond. There’s a good selection of marginal and deep water plants available. Keep marginals on a ledge at the edges of the pool and not too deep – Iris, Caltha, Primulas and Bulrushes are all good examples. For the middle/deeper parts of the pool water lilies are good and can give good protection for any fish you have in the pool. Most plants come ready planted in aquatic pots so just need placing into the pool. Don’t forget marginals need not be planted in the pool – if you have a damp, boggy area plants like Iris, Primulas and Lobelias will all grow happily.

Hanging Baskets need liquid feeding weekly - even with the slow release fertilizers added to composts, you’ll see the extra benefits from liquid feed. Baskets soon dry out especially when they’re sheltered from rain at the side of a house so watering morning and night in very warm weather is a must. Keep sowing or planting salad crops such as lettuce, spinach, spring onions and radish in the veg patch to get a continuous harvest. Use very fine netting to cover cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and other particularly susceptible vegetables against flies, pigeons and butterflies. Harvest peas and runner beans regularly whilst they are young and tender, freeze any spares for home grown vegetables during the winter months. Keep beans and peas moist and spray over the foliage to encourage pods to set. There’s plenty of choice in the herbaceous sections at the moment as well as the ever popular Lupins – especially the newer West Country Range, there’s the Salvias – Hot Lips being a good one,

Remember they’ll need frost protection once the winter frosts appear in November and December. If you want Hyacinths in flower for Christmas, they must be planted and put into a dark cool place in September. Most varieties require an 8-10 week cool period followed by 2-3 weeks of warmer conditions to bring them into flower. Use a compost specifically for bulbs as it will contain charcoal to keep the soil sweet.

is bitcoin investing really investing? It probably has not escaped your attention that digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin are creating huge excitement amongst investors right now. But is Crypto really a wise long-term place to invest your money?

The major problem so far with Crypto is its frightening volatility. As I write this article, my holding has lost approximately 25% in one week! Any investment that can move that quickly, should be handled with great care. On the other side of the coin, no pun intended, the rises can be as equally dramatic, which is why investors are so captivated by this style of investing. The temptation for some investors is to go ‘all in’ on Crypto, however I would be very cautious about this strategy. Some investors have been drawn into Crypto because they are perhaps impatient to see their money growth. Being impatient is the enemy of all investors. Being a patient investor is a great virtue, as anyone who has been a successful investor will tell you. You have to let time do the work for you.

Fans of Crypto currency investing believe that it is a game changer. It remains to be seen if that is the case and it is certainly far too early for anyone to say with any certainty that that will be the case. Anyone suggesting that Crypto is a panacea for investors, should probably be viewed with some scepticism for the time being. People like me and other personal finance experts regard Crypto as a potentially dangerous investment in the wrong hands. Don’t get me wrong, there is certainly an opportunity with Crypto investing, and I even purchased a small amount myself 3 years ago. I have not touched my initial investment, so have watched the journey of ups and downs over time.

The future for Crypto In my opinion, Crypto is not going to go away anytime soon. Long term, I expect it to become

more and more mainstream. The more mainstream that Crypto becomes, the less volatile it will become. What that will mean, is that over time, it will eventually stop moving so wildly and is likely to perform more like other investments. It will go up and go down more slowly. The big question is. “Will current Crypto investors be as interested, if it does not have the perceive ability to transform a person’s wealth so rapidly?” I suspect not. As with any investment, there is no guarantee that positive returns will be achieved, and investors may get back less than the amount they invested. nissan leaf controls to use a cliche come immediately to hand, the steering wheel has a plethora of controls. The 8” touchscreen infotainment system proved to be an easy companion and I really liked the display in front of the driver, that had multi-options and especially the one that showed a digital speed. There was also the option to show the range still left and the battery capacity, all these items are essential when you have an electric vehicle.

The Nissan Leaf was one of the first electric modern cars that could be purchased, it is probably the world’s best selling electric passenger car, writes Bob Hickman. It is quite a large vehicle, a genuine 5 seater, and it has a practical range in excess of 200miles which makes the Leaf a very user friendly vehicle. The Nissan Leaf is available as a 3 grade option, Acnta, the N-Connecta which was my test vehicle and the top specification,Tekna.

The all round visibility on the Leaf is exceptionally good, it had parking sensors to the front and rear and in addition a rear view camera. Rear passenger space was quite good and it had the advantage of a 60/40 split to the rear seats to increase capacity.

The Leaf is pure electric, no hybrid, no engine to top up batteries. My test vehicle was fitted with 62 kKh electric motor, sufficient to enable a remarkable 0-60 gallop is a mere 6.9 seconds and a potential top speed of 98mph. A lot of people are concerned about the range that the vehicle is possible to be driven, a full charge overnight using the garage 13amp socket revealed a potential range of 230 miles could be possible. When you consider most people’s commute may be 20 or 30 miles in each direction the Leaf has attraction and advantages.

To recharge the Leaf is simplicity in itself, a small button on the dashboard is pressed and a flap on the bonnet is opened to reveal 2 input connectors, one enables you to just plug in to your mains electric supply. The 2nd is for the rapid charge systems. A rough guide, if you have 6 watt box fitted at home, it would take potentially 11 hours to charge in full, commercial chargers can take 90minutes to charge up to 80%.

There are certain aspects of the Leaf that have been upgraded from the initial model, the acceleration even in Eco mode is excellent, but cancel the Eco and the acceleration is incredible, a further little button also acts as a strong retardation and re-charge facility, take your foot off and the vehicle slows itself down dramatically and it works to stop the car and even allow it to be held on a hill.

The Nissan Leaf really is an exceptional vehicle, stunning in its performance and looks and without doubt they are at the forefront of the technology. Nissan offer a three year warranty and the Leaf as tested was priced at £32,720.

The driving dynamics of the Leaf were of a very pleasant companion, it is so quiet apart from wind and tyre noise, its acceleration surprises a good many people at the traffic lights, and also I found it to be relaxing because there are no gears to change, its like driving an automatic, put your foot on the accelerator and off it goes. The driver’s seat and wheel were adjustable, all the

renault clio e-tech hybrid The interior is of a high quality with plush materials, I liked the soft coatings to the dashboard and the door panels. Instrumentation is really well driver focused with a large central dash infotainment screen where, most if not, all of the operational aspects are controlled from.

The latest incarnation of Clio is a curvaceous, sleek, coupe style vehicle, Renault have worked very hard to ensure that the Clio retains its brand loyalty, but capitalises and gains more buyers in to the hotly competitive super mini and now the more important hybrid category, writes Bob Hickman.

The seats were supportive and the ability to be comfortable as a driver were enhanced by the height and reach steering wheel and also the height adjustable seat.

The new Clio is both wider, longer and lower with an extended wheelbase which translates to more interior space. It looks a little like a 3-door because if you look closely the rear door handles have been hidden very carefully to make the vehicle look like a coupe.

Prices start in the region of £20,000 and there are choices in trim levels between Play, Iconic, S-Edition and as in my test car the RS-Line.

Renault describes the Clio as a super-mini, it will accommodate 3 adults at a push, but if you are a 6 footer you will struggle for the legroom. The rear of the vehicle is reasonably big for its external size and the boot whilst not over generous has the ability to be extended by dropping the seats.

Equipment levels are quite good, even the base entry level gets air conditioning, cruise control, power folding mirrors, multi-media system with Blue Tooth and a DAB and there is a range of Advance Driver Assistance Systems, (ADAS).

The E-Tech hybrid is equipped with a 1598cc petrol engine and in addition a 1.2 KHW electric motor. This is producing a joint power output of 103bhp, sufficient to give a 0-62 gallop in 9.9 secs and a top speed of 112mph.

It is pretty true to say that most people will have at some point of encountered a Renault Clio, they have been around for so long and have sold in their millions and there is little doubt that the latest incarnation of the all new Clio will be another success.

E-TECH is not a plug in rechargeable, it is a self charging hybrid and the 1.2 KHW battery motor is charged by regeneration and engine power. This does allow quite an extensive range of small urban duties in pure electric mode and if you lock in to EV(Electric Vehicle) a green light on the dashboard shows up, you can then travel quite a distance in pure electric mode.

The price of the Clio E-Tech Hybrid as tested was £24,355, this did include the metallic paint and a luxury pack and a somewhat extortionate £200 for a spare wheel.

The driving dynamics of the vehicle was of a companion that was responsive, handled wonderfully, braked superbly, and was at all times accommodating. During an extensive period of motoring, no motorway, but B roads A Roads, I managed to achieve marginally over 60mpg and I think that is quite exceptional.
