Gardens can be big or small. Terraces, courtyards and patios are extensions of our interior living spaces. In 2023, brands and manufacturers are launching outdoor furniture that mimics high-end living. Dining room furniture can be equally outdoors.

The outdoor living trend is here to stay and it is all about connecting your interior space with the extension of outdoor furniture and accessories. During Covid we found that the outdoor space provided a place for friends and family to spend quality time together. Now that our daily lives are returning to normal, our garden spaces are still so important for a calming escape; a place to relax and refresh after a long day.

Do you want to create a designer look in your garden? Here are my top garden style trends for 2023 and how to achieve that look.

MEDITERRANEAN STYLE

To create a slice of the Mediterranean in your garden, choose earthy tones and naturalcoloured outdoor furniture,

Get the look:

Think about positioning furniture under a large tree or pergola to create a shaded seating area that would be perfect to enjoy in warmer weather. Another ideal addition would be to add an outdoor pizza oven to cook your pizzas outside, true Italian style. Also plant olive trees, source a stone water feature and textured outdoor cushions and throws.

SCANDINAVIAN

For a contemporary modern, sleek garden look, get inspired by Scandinavian style furniture.

Get the look:

Select sleek corner-style sofas and pared back design against fresh lush green grass and potted plants, finished with wooden decking or sleek contemporary outdoor patio slabs. Adding an outdoor fireplace with a shelf for holding logs, is a great styling option, to fire it up once the sun sets.

COUNTRY COTTAGE

‘Cottage core’ interior trend has allowed country cottage gardens to still be as trendy as ever.

Get the look:

Choose rattan style furniture, relaxing padded seating, swinging chairs and rustic garden pots, with borders filled with a selection of wildflowers, such as daisies, honeysuckle, foxglove and marigolds. Style your seating with soft green patterned outdoor cushions and casual throws.

Super stylish garden sets that are worthy of an indoor space with a fire pit, a dining table and dining chairs that could look just at home in your dining room.

Get the look:

Dark grey and black lightweight aluminium furniture with waterproof upholstered seating, creates a statement that is worthy of a cocktail evening in your garden.

OUTDOOR TEXTILES

Another way to embrace the indoor-outdoor trend is to design an outdoor space that doesn’t hold back when it comes to textiles. Make your garden patio a more welcoming space with pillows and rugs designed to be used outdoors.

I sourced this great range of recycled waterproof cushions made from 100% PET with repellant lining. Cushion covers and cushion pads are available to order from Jennifer Suzanne Interiors.

LIVING GREEN WALLS

Vertical planting will save you space and bring life to dull outdoor walls. A plant wall is a vertical collection of plants, flowers or other foliage, that grows on or against a wall. Plant walls are brilliant space-savers as they keep the floor clear and can inject nature and colour into even the smallest terrace or balcony.

Get the look:

One way to create a plant wall is with a ready-made kit. These kits usually consist of panels that can be fitted together to cover whatever size is needed. Choose plants that are easy to grow and don’t grow too big.

SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE

Prioritise the environment in 2023 by choosing materials that are eco friendly. Recycled plastics, rattan and bamboo are all great outdoor sustainable options.

There’s plenty to plant out and do in the vegetable plot now. Plant smaller quantities little and often to keep a steady supply of veg for the kitchen.

Tomato, Cucumber and Pepper plants should not be planted outside until the end of May and inside need some heat at night if temperatures are dropping low.

Watch out for slug damage on young herbaceous plants, and summer bedding such as Marigolds. Use slug pellets or one of the natural controls that are available. ‘Slug Gone’ is one such product that is made from sheep’s wool, it’s sold in pellet form which you put round the base of plants and once dampened its small fibres act as an irritant to slugs.

Summer bedding can be planted outside from the end of May onwards, so long as we aren’t getting any late frosts. Antirrhinums, Asters and Lobelia first, leaving Marigolds, Begonias, Impatiens and Geraniums slightly later. Water well to get established, then, feed fortnightly and dead head regularly.

There’s plenty of moss in lawns again this year and MO Bacter organic moss treatment is the ideal product to use against it. It can be applied to your lawn any time from March through to September, it contains an organic fertilizer that releases over a 3 month period which digests the moss, greens the lawn and improves the soil. It leaves no unsightly black patches and scarifying is not necessary.

doggie dangers lurk in the summer

Long sunny days, ice creams, walks on the beach and fun with friends, summer delights that we and our dogs dream of. But this can also be a hazardous time for our precious ones, doggie dangers lurk in the summer!

Dogs can overheat when it’s too hot so it’s best to go for your walk early in the morning or late evening. Check the pavement to ensure that it isn’t too hot for your lovely one to walk on, a dog’s pads are sensitive and every year many poor souls end up at the Vets suffering with burnt paws. Ideally take a water bottle out with you so that your dog can have little sips of water if they want them. Ensure that you avoid going out with your dog all together between 12 and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest and if it’s too hot at other times then don’t walk at all.

Never leave your dog in a car on a warm day even if the window is open or the car is parked in the shade because this is still dangerous for a dog, they can overheat very quickly. Certain breeds of dogs are more at risk of heat stroke especially brachycephalic breeds (flat faced) like English Bulldogs and Pugs. Puppies and old dogs, long haired dogs, dark coated dogs, overweight dogs and those with medical conditions are also amongst those that are likely to suffer more easily so take care not to walk when it’s too hot.

Many of us will be enjoying tasty treats in the warm weather but take care if you are sharing them with your dogs. There may be a hidden danger lurking called Xylitol, a sweetener that is used in many foods including peanut butter, yogurt, sweets, ice cream, cakes and jams. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and can cause liver

failure and ultimately death. What is most concerning is that it is being used more and more commonly in peanut butter and other nut butters, it has several names, such as E967 and Meso-Xylitol so if in doubt don’t give it to your furry friend. A lot of pet parents use peanut butter in toys for their pets, so it is imperative that you check the ingredients to ensure that it is safe. Why not use a different kind of healthy treat in their toy, you could mash up some boiled egg or some nice cooked white fish or chicken, don’t forget to remove all bones you don’t want them choking and thoroughly wash their toys after they have finished.

Lurking in the long grass may be another summer danger! Ticks can be found all year round but summer is the most common time to for dogs to pick them up when they are racing through grass, shrubs or even piles of leaves. Tick bites can be uncomfortable and in unfortunate cases the dog can have an allergic reaction or worse contract tick transmitting diseases such as Lyme disease. It’s best practice to thoroughly brush your dog and then check them over after a walk especially under their front and back legs as well as in between their toes. More obscure places to look are their ears, eyelids and tails. If you find a tick it needs to be removed carefully, ask your Vet for advice if necessary.

Enjoy the lovely warm days but keep a look out for the doggie dangers that lurk this summer!

Always contact your veterinarian if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

from strength to strength at wrekin and old hall

A Shropshire educational trust is celebrating a string of international and national successes for pupils which has seen children come together from across its two schools.

The Wrekin and Old Hall Trust looks after children aged from four to 18 and this year clocked up successes in numerous disciplines.

Teams from Wrekin College reached the national finals in netball and football while individual winners celebrated new titles and prizes across the board with accolades in ballroom and latin dancing, Jiu Jitsu and British Eventing together with a double European gold in Pickleball.

Old Hall has seen its swimmers enjoy a triumphant year in the pool culminating in two relay teams qualifying for the national IAPS Swimming finals at the Olympic Pool.

Talented musicians from both schools came together in the award-winning Concert Band to take its second top platinum award at the NCBF finals in Manchester in April.

The Wrekin College Jazz Band also picked up a gold award while two soloists won prizes.

Numerous regional titles have also been clinched in rugby, hockey and netball with plans to celebrate the triumphant year at special end of term events this summer. The success comes as the Trust announces various new developments as a result of increased numbers with interest for places at Wrekin and Old Hall at an all-time high.

Mr Tim Firth, headteacher at Wrekin College, said today he was very proud of seeing both teams and individuals challenge themselves to perform exceptionally well at a national level.

“It has been an exciting year for Wrekin which has also seen work start on our new Design School,” he added. This adds to the Music School, Dance Studio and Business School, both launched in the last six years, which are specially designed to support specialist learning in those areas. The Business School boasts its own lecture theatre and board room while the Music School has a double height ensemble space for groups.

“Our strategy, which is producing consistent rewards, is to have staff, facilities and an ambitious outlook which can encourage the best in any child no matter where their strengths lie. This also ensures they are ready for the world outside of school and in a position to maximise any opportunity that might come along for them.”

At Old Hall headteacher Mrs Anna Karacan said the use of the state-of-the-art facilities on the shared campus was a huge hit with children and parents.

The school also launched a new after-school programme this year with clubs for STEM, Podcasting, Mini Duke and sports.

“Interest in Old Hall from parents across the region is at an all-time high and I am delighted that they see our school as a first choice for their children,” she added.

“It is wonderful that we have access to a campus which has seen such significant investment in recent years and in areas now being recognised as vital in terms of preparing children for senior school and life beyond the classroom.”

growing family of schools

I’m delighted to introduce The South Staffordshire Learning Partnership, a growing family of schools incorporating Codsall Community High School, Bilbrook Church of England Middle School, Perton Middle School, Lane Green First School and St Chad’s Church of England (VC) First School.

We exist to provide the best educational journey for our children, from nursery to sixth form. We have an exceptional reputation for our nurturing environments, their academic and sporting provision as well as a strong track record of success at each phase of education.

Our educational vision is to ensure that every child’s journey is shaped by a consistent approach that enables children to flourish as well-rounded people that achieve outstanding results.

We aim to develop a world class learning environment through a consistent focus on the really important element of our job – teaching and learning. We relentlessly focus on excellent provision in all of our classrooms.

It’s not just about the academic work that goes on within The Learning Partnership. The last number of years have been challenging for everyone so we work in partnership with our parents to ensure that the children are supported, kind to others and have an educational

experience which enriches them and exposes them to new experiences and new opportunities. We want our students to be considerate, open and inclusive people who go on and make a success of life once they’ve left the safety of the school environment. We aim to produce self-sufficient, resilient and hardworking young people who have a zest for life and make the most of the opportunities afforded to them.

Whilst all five schools are part of the same Learning Partnership we are determined to allow each to flourish and develop to enhance its own unique identity. Each school has a very distinct character and we encourage and celebrate that. Whilst each school can benefit from being within the learning partnership and the broad aspiration of excellence in all that we do is consistent, it’s still important that each school maintains its uniqueness.

Parents choose an individual school, not a collective of schools and therefore it’s vitally important that we don’t lose sight of the things that make them special. Parents are always incredibly impressed by what they see in the classrooms and corridors and we are always delighted to be able to demonstrate to parents just what makes each of our schools so special.”

students run 170 miles in 24 hours for charity

Over the last 25 years more than £100,000 has been raised for charitable causes by Wolverhampton Grammar School’s annual Coast 2 Coast Challenge. The annual sponsored challenge sees a group of Year 10 students (aged 15 years), complete a non-stop relay from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire. The aim is to cover the 170-mile journey in just one day. In doing so, the students face some of the steepest inclines in the country including the infamous Hardknott Pass, whilst raising money for good causes.

Following an intense 16-week training programme, this year’s team: Charlotte, Zena, Ashwin, Charlie, India, Reuben, Chris, Dylan, Tia and Matthew, completed the challenge during half-term. They ran non-stop for 24 hours and 46 minutes and raised an incredible £5,623 for Place2Be, the UK’s leading school-based mental health charity.

WGS

Coast 2 Coast challenge was the wonderful idea of a former staff member, Michelle Craig, who joined us from a school in New Zealand; she set up the first sponsored relay in 1999. Each year we are fortunate to be supported by a group of sponsors and our thanks go to RMW Electrical Services Ltd, The Shingler Group, The Blakemore Foundation, Holroyd Howe, Premier Sports and of course St Bees School who provide accommodation for us the night before the challenge.

We are so proud of this year’s team and the wonderful staff who supported them. Over 25 years an impressive 248 pairs of legs have crossed a total of 4,280 miles and raised well over £100k for 25 different charities – it has been a life-changing experience for everyone involved.”

Those who would still like to support the challenge can visit the school’s JustGiving page at justgiving. com/page/wgs-coast2coast2023

discover tettenhall college

Tettenhall College is a wonderful day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 2 – 18 years of age. Whilst 80% of our 500 pupils are British and local to this area, we are home to a wonderfully cosmopolitan boarding community of students from more than 24 countries, with 100 full-time boarders thriving, growing, and bringing so much to our school.

Located in Tettenhall, the school walls create a beautiful boundary for our pupils and is home to a wonderful campus full of heritage buildings, modern facilities, acres of woodland, playing fields, pitches, and a fullscale Victorian theatre. It is quite possibly one of the most wonderful educational settings within the region.

TC is a school that’s thriving. Under its Headmaster Mr Christopher McAllister, pupil numbers have never been healthier. The school is going from strength to strength in its 160th year, with a leadership team that is driven, ambitious and experienced. It’s a team that’s bringing the school together to make it greater than the sum of its parts.

There’s a core set of values followed daily at TC: Ambition, Character, Community, Creativity and Opportunity. Simple statements perhaps, yet values are only meaningful when the children understand their meaning and how they can personally bring them to life in everything they do.

Children at TC are known. They are individuals whose personal skills and talents form their individual learning plan. We aspire for academic achievement and excellence for every pupil. Look at our university destinations, they are excellent. What is often lost in the educational landscape of today, is the importance of knowing a child, ensuring that they are fulfilled in their learning, secure in their relationships and confident in themselves. TC nurtures this and when you meet the pupils, you’ll see it. When you meet our staff, you’ll understand it.

We want as many children as possible to experience and benefit from all that we deliver. As a registered charity we continue bringing scholarship and bursary opportunities to deserving children. We also ensure that every family who commits to being part of the ‘TC family’ is known and valued.

The world of today is challenging, TC is committed to ensuring all pupils who experiences its education will be well placed to tackle all that they will face with compassion, gratitude, intelligence, and as a citizen of our global world.

We can’t wait to meet you and welcome you to TC.

A DIARY OF EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES

With the announcement of their retirement from a remarkable 50-year career in the hairdressing industry, the dynamic duo of Nick and Royston are not planning to slow down anytime soon. As they embark on a new chapter in their lives, we eagerly anticipate following their captivating adventures.

CLIVEDEN HOUSE BIRTHDAY PARTY

Following heartfelt farewells to their team and cherished clients, Nick and Royston were treated to a well-deserved break at Cliveden House in Berkshire, where they joined in the celebration of Lisa Voice’s birthday. Lisa, an heiress and music publisher, has been a close friend of Nick and Royston for many years, having previously been the girlfriend of the legendary Rock & Roll icon, Billy Fury. The party was further enlivened by the presence of Tania Fossey, Creative Director of Bayliss and Harding, and an unexpected visit from the sensational Globe Girls, known for their electrifying performances at numerous events hosted by Nick and Royston. Their weekend at Cliveden House was a delightful escape filled with indulgent beauty treatments, leisurely afternoon teas, scenic boat trips along the river, and exquisite culinary experiences at the resort’s renowned restaurants.

CRUISING ON CELEBRITY BEYOND

This year marked the launch of the highly anticipated Celebrity Beyond, the epitome of luxury cruising. With its stunning suites designed by Kelly Hoppen and private sundecks by the pool, Nick and Royston found it hard to disembark from this opulent ship. They embarked on a Mediterranean voyage, visiting breathtaking destinations like Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, and Istanbul. During the 12-day journey, they revelled in relaxation, savoured Michelin-star cuisine, and were enthralled by starstudded performances. Britain’s Got Talent finalist Andrew Derbyshire, who had previously serenaded the couple at their wedding in The Dorchester, astounded the audience with his exceptional show.

Royston shared their unforgettable experiences on Instagram, allowing us all to vicariously accompany them on their incredible journey.

BIRMINGHAM GAY PRIDE

Fresh off their return from Rome, Nick and Royston swiftly attired themselves in their finest regalia to join friends at Birmingham Gay Pride. As VIP guests, they wholeheartedly supported this magnificent two-day event held in Birmingham’s vibrant Gay Village. The renowned Cabaret Marquee showcased the crème de la crème of drag acts from across the UK, featuring performances by Suga babes, Gabrielle, and B*Witched. With over 40,000 attendees revelling in the empowering theme of “Power in Pride”, the atmosphere was electric, creating an unforgettable celebration.

SOHO FARMHOUSE

Situated in the idyllic Oxfordshire countryside and offering exclusive accommodations, Soho Farmhouse is a celebrity members’ club that provides an array of amenities, including a wellness spa, lakeside pool parties, exceptional dining options, and a vibrant bar and nightclub. When their close friend Pete organized his 40th Birthday Bash at this enchanting venue, Nick and Royston were asked to join them. The weekend was packed with thrilling activities such as scenic bike rides, rejuvenating spa experiences, clay pigeon shooting, and even a cosy film screening at the Electric barn. Bathed in glorious sunshine, and with the esteemed presence of fellow guests like Joe Wicks and Ellen DeGeneres, it proved to be an extraordinary weekend of celebration.

With eager anticipation, we await the next captivating edition of Nick and Royston’s adventures as they continue to weave their magical tapestry of experiences.

FLOWERS FOR YOUR WEDDING

It’s lovely to see more and more couples carefully planning and selecting flowers to grow in theirs and family member’s gardens to incorporate within your wedding flower selection. In some instances, they use only home garden flowers throughout without the need of using commercially grown flowers.

Ask your wedding florist about including your grown flowers within your selection.

BE INSPIRED WITH WHAT IS AROUND YOU

A lot of us have been waiting for summer flowers to arrive to admire the glorious colours and to inspire us. The beauty of summer flowers is that it expresses itself in so many different colour variables. There are so many shades of one colour that can make a gentle stroll around where you live so special and with its amazing colours, look like a painter’s palette. Subtle colour changes consume the intense sunlight to allow flowers to truly showcase their beauty. As the daylight hours extend and temperatures reach their highest, just take the time to watch the incredible world of nature and flowers that surrounds us all.

I personally adore large deep borders in eye-catching blues, purples and lilacs. By planting your tallest flowers at the back and staggering the heights, it allows your flowers to have their own space to show their true beauty. Whether your preference with your planting of flowers is in block colours for impact or you choose to mix the colours throughout, all flowers look equally amazing and create an explosion of colour. Plan visits to open residential gardens in your area and National Trust gardens. It is great to pick up ideas and tips from the gardener. These creative gardeners that design show-stopping gardens at scheduled days throughout the year, open their garden to the public. After a stroll around their garden take the opportunity to chat to the proud owners and relax with tea and homemade cakes. Many gardeners sell cuttings off their plants displayed with a small contribution that will be paid to their nominated charity. I have picked up many cuttings off gardeners on open days. It is exciting to see the plant that the cutting has been taken from. It allows me to see the height and span my cutting could grow to. The gardener always shares with me helpful hints on how to look after it, which is a great advantage.

If you die without making a Will, you die intestate. This means your estate is distributed to your family members in accordance with the rules of intestacy, irrespective of what your intentions actually were and that means your estate might not be divided in the way you want or expect. The law around intestacy is designed to ensure that the deceased’s nearest relatives, in particular the spouse, receives the estate. They do not allow for modern family relationships, e.g., they make no provision for unmarried and unregistered partners. This means that on intestacy, the surviving partner will not automatically inherit any of the property or possessions owned in the sole name of the deceased.

The order of priority in distributing the estate is as follows:-

1. Your spouse

2. Your children

3. Your parents

4. Your brothers and sisters

5. Your half-brothers and half sisters

6. Your grandparents

7. Your uncles and aunts (your parents’ siblings)

8. Your uncles and aunts (your parents’ half siblings)

9. The Government

Where any of the relatives above die before you, their children or other descendants automatically take their place in order of priority. In order to protect your estate come and see one of our team who can guide you through the process for your peace of mind.

the importance of early retirement planning: a guide for those aged 45 and above

Have you ever envisioned what your retirement might look like? It should be a period filled with leisurely pursuits, travel, and quality time with loved ones. Unfortunately, this is not the case for too many of us.

So, to ensure that this vision becomes a reality, it’s more essential than ever to start sorting out your retirement plans in advance. This is particularly important if you are aged 45 or older. Here’s why.

Why is Retirement Planning Important?

Retirement planning is paramount for several reasons. First and foremost, it provides financial security. With life expectancies on the rise, you may spend a third of your life in retirement. Thus, having a comprehensive plan can ensure that your savings last as long as you do. Furthermore, retirement planning can help you to maintain your standard of living, meet unexpected costs and leave a legacy for your children.

Will Your Income Meet Your Needs?

Understanding whether your income will meet your needs during retirement is a crucial part of planning. It involves evaluating your likely retirement income, which can come from various sources such as state pensions, private pensions, and savings. It’s important to consider your desired lifestyle in retirement. Will you want to travel? Do you plan to support family members

financially? These factors can significantly influence the amount of money you’ll need.

Are You Really Ready for Retirement?

Retirement readiness is not solely about having enough money. It also involves considering factors such as your physical health, mental well-being, and social networks. Retirement brings a significant lifestyle change, and it’s crucial to ensure that you’re prepared for these changes.

For instance, do you have plans to stay active and engaged? Some individuals may choose to volunteer, take up a hobby or even start a small business in retirement. Furthermore, it’s important to consider the impact of retirement on your mental health. Are you prepared for the changes in daily structure and the potential for increased isolation.

What Are Your Retirement Planning Options?

Retirement planning options are varied and depend on your personal circumstances and goals. Here are a few key options:

1. State Pension: The UK government provides a state pension to those who have made sufficient National Insurance contributions. It’s a regular payment that you can claim once you reach state pension age.

2. Workplace or Private Pension Schemes: These can be workplace pensions or personal pensions.

62 finance

They’re an effective way to save for retirement, often offering tax benefits. You can contribute to these schemes, and often, your employer will too.

3. Defined Benefit Pension Benefits: This type of retirement income usually comes from working for the local authority or Government body. Historically, they were available from the private sector however these are now less and less common.

4. Investments: Investing can provide an additional income stream in retirement. This could include investments in the stock market, Fixed Interest investments, or property. However, it’s crucial to understand that all investments come with risk.

5. Savings: Regular saving can accumulate a significant amount over time. You might consider saving in a high-interest account, or a tax-efficient Individual Savings Account (ISA).

Pensions from the Government and Private Pension Schemes

Government pensions and private pension schemes play a crucial role in retirement planning. The state pension can provide a basic income in retirement, but for most, it won’t be enough to maintain their preretirement standard of living. A full State Pension in the current tax year is £203.85 a week and requires 35 years of National Insurance contribution credits to

have been paid. It’s a good idea to check you’re your National Insurance records are up to date.

So, if the state pension is unlikely to be sufficient, that’s where private pension schemes come in.

Private pension schemes allow you to build up a pension pot, which you can then use to provide an income in retirement. With most private pension schemes, your contributions are boosted by tax relief, meaning the government effectively contributes to your pension pot too.

In conclusion, retirement planning is essential, particularly for those aged 45 or above. Starting your planning now can ensure you have a financially secure and fulfilling retirement. Remember, it’s never too late to start planning for your future.

The value of your investments can go down and up in value. Capital at risk.

estate planning

Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death.

What is an ‘estate’

Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions.

Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.

What is a Will?

A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.

Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do.

Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:

- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.

- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.

- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.

- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly.

Benefits of a Will

These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will: You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.

Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.

Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.

Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children.

Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.

Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms - A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.

When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.

Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.

Inheritance tax

It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.

The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries.

How

much does a Will cost?

This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

first stop the first name on wolverhampton motorists’ lips!

First Stop Wolverhampton is the first garage name on motorists’ lips, following an eye-catching refurbishment along Chapel Ash which has put the centre’s name up in lights - quite literally!

Formerly known as HiQ, the garage is one of Wolverhampton’s oldest and most iconic around, with first impressions lasting with tens of thousands of drivers over many years.

But with illuminated, striking signage, new equipment and access to an even wider range of premium tyres, motorists can now look forward to an even more memorable service. And to celebrate the new chapter in the company’s history, free tyre safety checks are being offered to all.

Owner Simon Bennett made the decision to become a First Stop franchise partner, which has allowed for a number of improvements including a £25,000 makeover. The garage, which was originally founded over 100 years ago as Staffordshire Motor Tyre Company, has evolved to become a leader in

automotive services today, with all mechanics from the local area and boasting extensive qualifications in vehicle maintenance.

It now stocks a broader range of premium tyres featuring the prestigious Bridgestone and Firestone ranges for the first time, while a number of exciting new promotions and offers will also be rolled out. Technicians will also be trained to even higher levels and existing garage equipment will also be upgraded.

Owner Simon Bennett, who took over the reins from his dad Colin, said:

“We are extremely excited to be embarking on a new journey with First Stop. The partnership will allow us to offer our customers an even better service and stay ahead of the game when it comes to technology and mobility solutions in an ever-changing marketplace.”

“We want to reassure customers that the same team that they are familiar with will remain, along with our customary levels of honesty and trust.”

First Stop’s Retail Network Manager Mark Widdows said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Simon and his team to the First Stop Network. The reputation he has built up in Wolverhampton over the years is second-to-none and his decision to partner with us validates our own franchise proposition.

“Each garage we partner with shares our same values and are respected businesses in their communities. It goes without saying that we couldn’t think of a more fitting garage to partner with than First Stop Wolverhampton. We will now be able to offer them support in a number of ways and we can’t wait to get to work.”

First Stop Wolverhampton offers the full range of automotive services including MOTs, servicing, batteries, wheel balancing, brakes and all other mechanical repairs. Its investment in the latest wheel alignment equipment also makes it one of the most technologically advanced garages in the city for this nature of work. Meanwhile, its tyre range will now be even more comprehensive, with great performing products stored

in-house for cars, vans, 4x4s, trailers, hatchbacks and sports utility vehicles.

honda civic

The current Civic is the 11th incarnation writes Bob Hickman, I remember well the first Civic they were small, diminutive cars, and like most manufacturer with their product, the Civic has now grown in to quite a large, 4/5-seater saloon.

Only available as a 2-litre, petrol Hybrid, with electric battery motor assistance. The engine is 1998cc and when you add in the electric motor you end up with a 186-power train which is quite substantial. Honda suggests that a maximum speed of 112mph and a 0-60 gallop in marginally over 8 seconds.

Where the Civic scores highly is in the CO2 emissions, as low as 95, a combined mpg of 56.5mpg is the quoted figure however during my time with the vehicle the computer suggested I had achieved 52.5mpg which on varied roads encompassing quite a lot of inner City and a fair few miles on dual carriageways and a little bit extra on motorway, I thought this to be exceptional, when you consider the size of the vehicle.

What is beneficial with the hybrid there is no need to have a huge umbilical cord to recharge. The vehicle itself detects the terrain and the battery life and the vehicle runs on either EV (a little symbol on the dashboard) tells you are running on pure electric mode or when a little extra boost is needed the engine just kicks in to life without any fuss or trouble whatsoever, in fact it is very difficult and almost impossible to discern the differential between petrol and electric, such is the smooth transition. The interior of the Civic is quite a pleasant environment to be cocooned within, it will easily accommodate 5 adults but 4 would be far more comfortable, with ample leg, shoulder room, height is slightly restricted due to the coupe styling of the rear of the vehicle.

The level of equipment within the Civic is very good. All of the version are equipped with a 9” display screen with infotainment facilities It is very easy to operate, for those who use their mobile in Apple play or Android auto features then it is quite easy to connect via the USB and the screen displays everything that you would need.

My particular test car was the Advance, the top specification, and this had a totally digitalised display in front of the driver and also the central console. You can alter the display to whatever you choose to want to have displayed. I like to have a digital speed display right in front of me.

The driving dynamics of the Civic are one of a delightful companion, especially in and round town, the power steering was just perfectly balanced, not too over sensitive that you couldn’t feel what the car was doing and gave the right amount of assistance. Visibility all round was again a bonus due to the large amount of glass that has been incorporated within the Civic. One feature that does get a plus mark was the luggage facility, the boot is large, what was attractive was the factor that the lip was not too high, so those of you who want to lift in pushchairs and heavy loads, the golf bag or trolley you haven’t got to go on a physical education course to be able to lift things to an unsustainable height.

The interior was one of being reassured of the quality and brand name that is Honda, all the materials felt smooth, no rough plastic, switches on dials operated exactly as they should, doors closed with a reassuring clunk and all in all you could tell that this was a vehicle of quality.

Honda is known for its reliability and with a wealth of experience and knowledge of hybrid engine technology and offer a 5-year, 90,000-mile warranty on each of the hybrid batteries and this is in addition to a 3-year warranty on all the other parts and equipment with the vehicle.

The price of the vehicle is £34,650 and added to mine was £975 supplement for the metallic blue paint, giving the Civic an on the road price of £35,625.

volvo xc40 recharge pro

The Volvo XC40 has been around for a little time but now a makeover has been introduced to the external and internal appearance, but the major feature of the new XC40 is it has now become a fully electric SUV, designed to compete with plethora of other SUVs in the pure electric market, writes Bob Hickman.

Externally it is difficult to know that the new XC40 is pure electic, the external dimensions look very similar to the conventional petrol and diesel XC40 with the exception of the front grille has now been effectively closed off because there is no need for air to run through the radiator or be part of the cooling.

The XC40 has a lovely wonderful high seating position with generous amounts of legroom, both front and in the rear, and this high seating position, gives wonderful panoramic views from the vehicle. In addition, the carrying capacity is excellent with a huge boot. The XC 40 has a plethora, of technical features so much so I reckon it would take you a week to learn the full capacity of this vehicle. However, if you are a technophobe, it is without doubt the vehicle for you.

One of the features that you become acquainted with are the huge mapping displays, one is contained within the conventional binnacle, in front of the steering wheel, and the other Google maps on the huge infotainment system. The trim itself is beautiful, the dashboard is clear and the controls to use a cliche all fall nicely to hand, although you do need to work and check on what they all actually do.

The major difference however with this particular XC40 is the fact that it is a pure electric. The 231bhp electric motor is a willing companion, and performance is linear like in its 0-60 acceleration in just 7 seconds, a top speed of 99mph is claimed but it is not about top speed when you go electric.

Volvo suggest that the range could be up to 262 miles. The charging time is academic, it all hinges on what you actually choose to use it for. If you use a very fast charger 150-kilowatt charger then you could charge it to 80% in 32 minutes, the conventional 11 kilowatt in 11 hours, if you plug in to the mains at home then you are talking 24 hours plus to recharge fully from zero.

To drive the vehicle is in itself simplicity, enter the driving seat, there is no need to put a key in the ignition, it is all done electronically, choose drive or reverse whatever you want, a plethora of information comes up on the screen including an incredible overview camera that gives a full view of the car and surroundings and away you go. It really is as easy as that, no gears to worry about, select drive, point it and you are away.

The driving dynamics were of a vehicle that defied its large size, there was no discernible rock and roll-on A and B category roads, it was a comfortable companion. One feature that was startling and needed to really check the handbook to find out how to modify it, was the re-charging under deceleration, take your foot off the accelerator and it was almost like applying the brakes such was the retardation effect that at times I was worried that someone behind me would run in to me, but I shouldn’t have worried because when the vehicle entered in to this mode, it actually put on the brake lights. It reminded me many years ago of when I drove coaches and they had a Telmar electronic braking system that worked on the prop shaft, the Volvo system enabled you, if you are very frugal on the accelerator pedal to put power back in to the battery.

If a pure electric is for you, the XC40 with the Volvo name that is known for safety and security, should be on your shopping list, be prepared to dig deeply, the XC40 Recharge range is available on the road from £45,750.
