create your ideal home office with these inspiring ideas by Jennifer Suzanne Whether the space is an entire room where you can shut the door or it’s just a cosy, small nook in the corner of a living room, there are plenty of home office ideas that can help you maximise space without skimping on style. Since the pandemic has led to an increase in businesses working from home, the home office has become part of many homes. As with other rooms, this one has to integrate into the interior design of the house and keep up with the latest trends for a stylish result. If you work from home, it means you need a working space that will suit your every-day working environment. Considering you will spend most of your time here, you should opt for a productive environment that will uplift your mood and boost creativity. I have prepared a list of best trends for a home office in 2022 to match or to help you achieve an up-todate result.

6

trends CLASSIC COUNTRY For a classic office design, choose wooden desks, leather chairs, wicker baskets, wall lights, chandeliers, panelling, bookcases and accessories such as vases and ornaments. Mix stripes and floral patterns.

STYLISH & SLEEK To create a sleek look, add in reflective surfaces such as mirrored, glass or crystal finishes. Use luxurious textured wallpaper, built-in desks, storage, shelving, spotlights, metallic silvers and golds, dark painted walls, cool neutral tones together with artwork in sleek frames, plain rugs, art deco styling and Orchids.

home

SCANDI Choose modern and practical designs; natureinspired light oak furniture, shelves, painted finishes, black accents, organic shaped mirrors, contemporary lighting such as exposed lamps, leafy plants in rattan and wicker baskets, dried flowers and concrete vases.

Comfy and stylish office chairs

The 2022 trends stress the importance of comfort within a workplace, particularly if it is a home office. You spend the most time on chairs whilst working, and an appropriate choice in this sense, will keep it both comfy and stylish. Take a look at the following options - even a dining chair can double up as an office chair. Classic Country Style: For this look choose a traditional elegant style. •

Luxury materials such as leather, linen, button-back chesterfields in plain or striped styles

Stylish and sleek: Choose sophisticated and statement styles. •

Velvets, linen, textured fabrics, neutral colours, black or metallic chrome and brass finishes

Scandi: Modern and practical is the way forward. •

Chairs made of nature-inspired materials for an ecostyle; clean, sleek, and minimal in design and form, and in basic colours like grey, white, and black

BRINGING NATURE INTO THE HOME OFFICE Whether your workspace is a small and cosy or large and open space, plants will help elevate the space. They are great for adding in colour and also help purify the air around you. MY TOP FAVOURITE OFFICE PLANTS: For a low maintenance option, choose succulents or similar plants. Go for Aloe Vera, Zamioculcas (these are great for rooms that don’t get much natural light) or Haworthia. A standing pot plant such as Dracaena, will add colour to your office and is good in most light spaces. For a flowering option choose a peace lily. This will bring purifying properties and add a feeling of tranquillity to any office.

LIGHTING YOUR HOME Place your desk close to your window to get as much natural light, as it is scientifically proven that exposure to daylight will boost your productivity, health and wellbeing. Being able to look outside onto a garden or a view is another pro, as regular screen breaks can help prevent eye strain. Inspire creativity with statement lamps. Choose a stylish table lamp that will transform your working space and think bold colours and shapes to add a personal touch to your space. Hang a bulb from a ceiling for a space saving solution and it’s a good option if you only have space for a small desk. Consider wall lights to add a stylish touch to your home office. Picture lights can enhance artwork or mount wall lights onto your built in storage. These are also great to create a classic office style. Benefit from desk light to illuminate the space and help with adding extra light for precision whilst doing tasks late at night.

I hope you enjoyed my home office trends. Please get in touch if you need any assistance with your interior spaces.

local company helps customer with free install after devastating news When Roland Hunt of Solihull was made redundant unexpectedly he was devastated – and with the last payment of a conservatory roof installation due he was worried that he wouldn’t be able to get the project finished.

roof fitted when he was able to, despite fearing that day may be a long way away, Wolverhampton Glass’ MD Neal Harper phoned him back to say they would install the roof for free. “It was totally unexpected, and I was absolutely over the moon; it really did restore my faith in human kindness,” said Mr Hunt.

He need not have worried though. When Wolverhampton Glass, who were doing the install, heard his plight, they did the install for free, much to Mr Hunt’s delight.

“Matt Tingle, who headed up the team, got as many of their lads as possible to get the job done, despite some being on their day off, and they did an absolutely fantastic job. I can’t thank or praise Wolverhampton Glass enough, they are great people.”

“My old plastic conservatory roof desperately needed replacing and after having to push the installation date back to January after a close death in the family, I got an email telling me I was going to be made redundant,” explained the 58-year-old creative artworker. “I was devastated and when I looked at my finances I knew I couldn’t afford to have it fitted.”

Neal said: “It was very upsetting to hear Mr Hunt’s struggles and we all wanted to do something for him. Like some he could have just left us in the lurch with a roof we could do nothing with, but he didn’t, and we are delighted that we could help him.”

After explaining to Wolverhampton Glass that he would only be able to pay half now and then the rest to get the

efficient and helpful I cannot speak highly enough of the entire service from design to installation and quality of the finished room by IGS, Ian was so helpful during the design process with his knowledge and experience, the garden room was space planned with office desk, bookcase, sofa and wall mounted LED. All the office furniture was made to measure by IGS in their very own manufacturing base in Wolverhampton which helped the space planning. When the team came to install I was blown away by how efficient and helpful they were; Alek and Mark talked me through every stage from the groundscrew building supports through to installing the data cabling. I also tweaked the design of the decking, making it slightly bigger and adding some steps, this was no trouble to them at all. We are so glad that we went for the antique composite cladding along with the coffee composite decking the contrast works fantastically well with the Aluminium Anthracite bifold doors and with no maintenance, superb advice again. It was a significant investment however worth every penny! Highly recommended. I have no qualms in saying that these guys are the best in the business & offer a fantastic product that is far superior to any of its rivals. Chris & Angela Waterhouse - Wellington Shropshire

never mind the school bell as hot air balloon launches the day in special surprise for shropshire pupils Pupils at a Shropshire school were left wowed after arriving for class to find a Hot Air Balloon in their playing fields.

“It is always worthwhile to encourage situations where young children get to meet real people in unusual jobs so they can see for themselves how many opportunities there are out there in terms of careers and even just trying new things.”

The youngsters at the Old Hall School in Wellington then gathered outside to see the red balloon inflate to create a stunning sight on the grounds early on Friday morning.

Matt Jones, Managing Director of Virgin Balloon Flights said: “With such a busy flying season across the whole of the UK, it really does feel special when we’re able to say ‘yes’ to an invitation from a local school.

Organised by Virgin Balloon Flights the colourful spectacle was greeted with cheers of delight as the pilot guided the balloon on a few short trips up and down, with the tether attached, so they see it in the air. Headteacher Martin Stott said the balloon certainly caused a great deal of excitement with pupils surprised by the early morning visitor.

“Hot air balloons give you the same magical feeling whatever your age – the sight of them brings joy to both kids and grown-ups alike.

“It was lovely to see such delight on their faces as they spotted the balloon in the playing fields,” added Mr Stott,

“We’ve been doing this for almost 28 years now and we never tire of seeing the expressions of wonder and happiness when our big red balloons drop in.”

“I think they could not quite believe what they were seeing. It’s not every day a hot air balloon ends up in your school playground.

The balloon was at the school for just over an hour with the visit proving a resounding success.

“We are also so grateful to pilot Steve for talking to the children and answering questions so they could find out more about hot air balloons and what a fascinating job it is to fly in them.

the tettenhall college difference Tettenhall College is a wonderful day and boarding school. It is a school that genuinely and successfully combines academic achievement and personal growth, with the very best delivery of pastoral care and an emphasis on kindness, gratitude and good manners. This is what the very best schools do. They allow children to be happy, confident and engaged individuals who are nurtured to love learning, challenge and success.

What Scholarship really means This educational philosophy underpins the approach to scholarship at Tettenhall College. To be a Scholar is a privilege, a reward and a responsibility. Pupils who enter the College at either Year 7, Year 9 or Year 12 are given the opportunity to be assessed for scholarship, and those demonstrating the highest levels of attainment and potential are made awards. All scholars are required to complete Scholars’ Tasks each term, to ensure their commitment to onward learning and personal growth. However, the fundamental difference at Tettenhall College is that every pupil in the Senior School and Sixth Form has a Scholars’ Handbook. Every pupil is welcome and encouraged to aspire to scholarship.

Firm foundations for success The Preparatory Pathways Programme is tailor made to ensure children from the age of 2 upwards progress through a structured and comprehensive learning journey. This continues through the Senior School and into Sixth Form, where their own Pathways Programme delivers outstanding levels of success. A 100% A Level pass rate, 85% A* to B grades and 100% of students securing their first choice of university are all markers of this.

smoked salmon & fennel risotto 2 banana shallot 4 cloves of garlic 30g unsalted butter 15ml olive oil 250ml of dry white wine 50g petit pois 1 baby fennel bulb 300g smoked salmon A few basil leaves Cracked black pepper Maldon sea salt

SERVES 4 COOKING UTENSILS: Heavy based pans Spatula Measuring jug Chopping board Sharp cooks knife Fine grater Ladle INGREDIENTS: 250g Arborio rice 750ml of chicken stock

METHOD - read through first then measure out all of your ingredients before starting 1 Melt the butter in the pan and add olive oil to help prevent burning. Finely dice the shallots and soften gently in the butter for 15 minutes and then finely slice the garlic and fennel and add to the shallot. Soften for another 5 minutes and then add the rice stirring until rice is coated with butter then add petit pois. 2 Mix the wine and stock together and keep warm in a separate pan. Ladle the wine and stock in a bit at a time continuously stirring and allowing the rice to absorb the liquid until adding more. The rice needs to be cooked until it still has a little bite but not chalky. A risotto usually takes 20 minutes to cook so keep this in mind when you are trying to work out if cooked. Check seasoning and add a pinch of maldon salt if needed. 3 When your are ready to serve tear the smoked salmon and fold into the rice with torn leaves of basil. Grate parmesan and sprinkle cracked black pepper over to serve. I prefer my risotto a little less creamy so I don’t always use all of the wine and stock and finish off by placing the lid on the pan to steam to finish.

hair & beauty

nick & royston Royston Blythe has been a massive influence in the hairdressing industry for the last 49 years. This dynamic duo, Nick and Royston, have created a successful salon group, achieved an abundance of awards and their careers have offered them opportunities most people could only dream of. Nick and Royston have established an environment of passion and creativity that not only inspires their clients but has also created a wealth of talent in the RB team. It has been a while since we caught up with them to reflect on their flamboyant careers and learn what keeps them still at the top of their game.

Q. Why did you choose hairdressing as a career? Nick - I was thick at school but loved fashion and wanted to be part of that industry. In those days you had to go to university and with my background that was never going to be an option for me. My auntie arranged an interview for a Saturday job in a salon and when I walked in, I knew it was for me. I left school at 15 and started work full time. Royston - I loved to play with my sister’s hair and then I started to cut all the neighbour’s hair. It seemed to come naturally to me, so there was nothing else I ever wanted to do.

Q. You have both been hairdressing for nearly 50 years, yet you still work daily in the salons. What motivates you? Nick - We have been so fortunate with the fabulous people we have met and the places this job has taken us to, but I am still happiest behind the chair looking after our amazing clients. I love the buzz and chat in the salon. We work with an incredibly talented team, so there is always competition to keep producing great work. I still want to keep challenging myself and I never want to stop! Royston - We have a talented team that is passionate about hairdressing. They want to achieve great things and I’m right behind them. Education and the desire to keep improving still drives me and the team with the same values motivating us every day.

44

hair & beauty Q. What have been the highlights over the years? Nick - OMG too many to name! I have experienced things I never dreamed possible for a lad from Wednesfield. I have been lucky enough to be four times winner of ‘Midlands Hairdresser of the Year`, yet I hope we have stayed grounded. We are proud of Wolverhampton, so we have stayed affordable with our prices, loyal to our clients, shared successes with our team and supported other local businesses. Royston - Looking back, for two Black Country boys, we can`t believe where we have been and what we have been up to… Some I can’t even mention! Highlights include opening a salon at The Dorchester Hotel in London, working with Christian Lacroix in the South of France, trips all over the world for L’Oréal, creating a show for the Thai royal family and the Golden Jubilee show at Buckingham Palace. But the biggest highlight was meeting Nick and enjoying a very happy life together.

Q If you were just starting out on your careers now, would you still choose hairdressing? What advice would you share? Nick - Absolutely! My mom worked in a kitchen and my dad, at Goodyears. I have been places and achieved things I never thought possible when I was at school. Hairdressing has given me the platform to succeed. I love clients, both new and old, and many have been loyal to us for over 40 years. But it is not just what you do but who you share it with, and we have an amazing team that are like family to us. We have had the most incredible times with them and will continue to do so. My advice would be to train in a great salon that continually invests in education, offers you opportunities to achieve great success and be part of a team that you can create memories with. Royston - I would not change anything! We have worked very hard for the last 50 years, but hairdressing has given us a great lifestyle, wonderful friends and the stories I could tell would make a great book! My biggest advice is work in the right environment and surround yourself with talent. Hairdressing is continually progressing. Skills and motivation can fade, so to be the very best, work alongside the very best.

travel

holidays are back! As we are now well into spring and looking forward to the summer months, I have been looking back over the first few months of the year and reflecting on what a huge difference it has been for the travel Industry compared to the same period last year. As Covid restrictions have eased and more and more countries have lessened their entry requirements, including the UK, travel has opened up again with a huge swath of people looking to embrace the freedom of exploring other countries again or simply sitting on the beach or by the pool with a cocktail soaking up the sun and re-energising.

Katie Brook, Personal Travel Consultant The number one issue when demand is high is availability. A combination of holidays moved due to Covid and the huge influx of new bookings means availability is less. What does that mean for you if you are yet to book your holiday but want to get away? Apart from finding the exact holiday you are looking for; less availability can impact on price. The good news is, as we have seen demand increase, we have also seen some of the main travel operators increasing their routes to popular destinations in response. How can I help? As a Personal Travel Consultant, I have access to over 500 suppliers to source the best holiday options for my customers, ensuring the best value for money, with all my holidays being fully ABTA and ATOL protected, giving complete peace of mind. This includes all the main tour operators such as Jet2, TUI and Easyjet holidays, to name a few, as well as popular cruise lines such as P&O ferries, MSC Cruises and Silversea. So from staycations to vacations, packaged holidays to tailor made itineraries, city breaks to beach holidays, cruises to road trips, I am your one stop shop for all your holiday needs.

Bookings over the first part of the year have been record breaking. If I look purely at the statistics from the travel company I work with, Not Just Travel, over January and February we were seeing daily record breaking numbers of bookings being made, even compared to pre-Covid times. This is fantastic for an industry that was hit very hard by the restrictions imposed by Covid and is great for the countries around the world that rely on the tourism industry for survival. But what does it mean for the customer and what a dvise can I give if you are yet to book your next holiday adventure?

46

travel

In addition, you get my fully personalised service, which means I can offer advice and guidance, whether that be in terms of finding the perfect holiday for you or ensuring you understand the latest travel requirements for the country you are visiting and that they are suitable for you. If you are yet to book your next holiday but are still feeling a bit worried about travelling and concerned about having to search through dozens of options to find the best holiday for you – don’t be! Contact me and I will take all the stress away from finding the holiday of your dreams, ensuring you have all the latest advice and information; from enquiry, to booking, to departure and return.

creating your wedding theme in flowers When you start to plan your wedding, you naturally will notice that you will be creating a style that is individual to yourselves. It may be a subtle theme with a twist of your style or a themed wedding that captures your favourite things. Most themes can be worked into your flowers. Very popular themes are Woodland & Rustic, Boho styled, English Afternoon Tea, Romantic & Dreamy and Disney Themed. For the more creative couples the ideas will include a more dominant focal theme. I have created some very eye-catching themed weddings as a florist. There are always weddings that I will always remember designing for the fun and expressions that I see on people faces when the designs become real.

ADDING A FLORAL TOUCH TO YOUR CAKE.. Don’t forget the cake in your theme. To add detail to your wedding cake is always a treat…..they smell divine. In my job I am so lucky to meet and work alongside some amazing cake designers. When coordinating your cake florals with your florist I always recommend that you forward your cake designers details and then your florist should contact them direct. Your florist should then receive your cake sketches and brief to establish the correct quantity of flowers and foliage required.

TABLE PLAN DECORATION…. There is a wide range of areas you can decorate within your wedding venue. It is a lovely touch to add an arrangement next to your table plan. As you can see from the image this creates a real feature for that all important guest list.

I have to confess, I chose a few dresses then started looking at millinery, which immediately focused my mind. Beautiful creations, whether they are bespoke from Sally at Sharper Millinery or ready to wear, they are such glamorous items to buy, so make a day of it. This monochrome dress from Chi Chi London is a fabulous shape; accessorised with a fabulous hatinator and sparkly shoes from Zara. The jumpsuit is by Jane, a super stylish British brand created by Jane Lewis, 20 years ago. I have added metallic shoes from Anthropologie and hat by KJ Millinery.

This is a glorious page of eye popping sherbet shades. ‘Never Fully Dressed’ is a super colourful brand with an eclectic mix of fabrics that you can go and look at in Frasers, Wolverhampton. I’ve added block colour accessories; I love the vinyl bag from Aldo, it comes in 3 colours and have a look at katmaconie.com - the shoes are amazing, not for everyone, but totally gorgeous. The orange tea dress from Ted Baker would take you to numerous events. Dress with feathers and beads as I have done or wear it every day with pumps. The Reiss wide leg trouser is totally on trend and I love how they have mixed the different shades of sherbet.

Adrianna Papell is a very glamorous brand. It has a fabulous range of styles and an excellent plus size range which is great to see they cater for everyone. I love this stunning asymmetric dress, definitely a dress to make an entrance. I’ve teamed it with a fuschia hatinator and stylish snake heels from Moda In Pelle. The floral hat by Sharper Millinery would also look wonderful, making a real statement. The classic dress by John Charles with stylish feathery cuffs would be perfect for Mother of the Bride, just add metallic accessories. Now is a great opportunity to make positive changes in your life and your dental care is no exception. Resolutions are often made in the new year, but is 2022 the year you enhance your smile? Whether you want an aesthetic improvement or to replace missing or failing natural teeth, dental implants can offer many possibilities.

With his wife focusing on business development the clinic soon became one of the busiest in the country. The demand for Jon’s time continues to grow and he is always delighted when seeing happy patients return for further implant treatment or having been recommended by those who have benefitted from treatment provided. He continues to accept new patients for implant consultations and is dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for those who want to improve their smile or have lost or are losing teeth.

In 1991 Jonathon Pugh arrived in Wolverhampton to take on a Dental Practice on the West Park. 30 years later he is still serving the people of Wolverhampton but is now based on the Tettenhall Road. His career pathway changed as a result of a New Year resolution. Towards the end of 2011 he decided to open a new Implant Clinic and work only with dental implants. This ambition was realised in the April of 2012 and Jon has placed over 5,000 implants in the last ten years.

Though born in Birmingham, Wolverhampton has been Jon’s adopted home for many years. 2021 saw his 30th anniversary in the city. When not at the clinic, Jon is very family focused and lives locally with his wife Bibi and their four children.

Jon was born and educated in Birmingham, graduating from the University of Birmingham in 1987 with honours and a distinction in clinical dentistry. His Master’s degree in Implant dentistry was completed at Warwick University, again with a distinction. His reputation in the implant world was well established by the time the new clinic opened. Jon was travelling across Europe to the world’s finest teaching institutions to hone his skills. He was also lecturing in the UK and abroad eager to share his knowledge and experiences. His motivation is based on the improvement in the quality of life he can offer his patients and their

keep your bunny bouncing towards summer Were almost at the turn of the season once again and it’s an ideal time to make sure your beloved bunny is fit, healthy and ready to bounce in to Summer.

in fiber, antioxidants and a good source of minerals as well as vitamins. Rabbits absolutely love Dandelions and they can eat the leaves as well as the flower, these along with twigs can be mixed into the rabbit’s hay and be hidden to make his or her life more interesting. In the wild rabbits would forage for a large percentage of their time. Something for bunny to safely chew on would also be a good source of amusement as well as playing a valuable role in helping to keep their teeth growth under control.

Flystrike can be a problem for rabbits in the warmer weather, many flies are harmless but some, such as the bluebottle will lay their eggs on poor bunnies’ fur. When the eggs hatch the maggots begin to eat the rabbit’s flesh and sadly this can cause shock and death in a very short amount of time.

Take care with Rabbit Mixes as they can cause bunny to feed selectively, picking out their favourite bits and not eating others that contain vital nutrients. Pellets on the other hand are full of fibre and have an even spread of nutrients to prevent selective feeding. Don’t let bunny fill up on too many pellets though, they need to eat enough hay to help keep their teeth healthy.

Flies are particularly attracted to soiled or damp fir around bunny’s bottom. It is good practice to check your rabbit daily throughout the year anyway, but especially in the warmer weather to ensure that they are clean and healthy. Pay particular attention to their behind, keep this area well groomed, clean and dry which will help minimise the risk of Flystrike and ensure that any issues are dealt with immediately. Should you notice any problems, ensure that you contact your Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible.

It’s a good idea to get an annual check-up with the Vet to ensure that your bunny stays in ‘tip hop’ I mean, tip top condition and keeps bouncing all year long!!!

Rabbits teeth continuously grow throughout their lifetime, so it is vital that your rabbit is given the correct diet to ensure good dental health. Hay and grass are very important for a rabbit and should account for at least 80% of their diet, fresh hay should be available to them at all times. Good quality hay from a variety of sources is essential, as well as keeping the teeth healthy it also helps prevent boredom, keeps the jaw strong and maintains a healthy gut.

Important always check that your garden plants are non-toxic for rabbits and that vegetables and herbs given to them are clean and not sprayed with chemicals. Do not feed your rabbit lawn mower grass cuttings. If you are ever concerned about your pet always consult your veterinarian. Libby Williams MHAO AHdip Animal Healer & Holistic Therapist

time to get gardening splash of colour, along with the hardy Geraniums and the coloured leaves of the Heuchera. Don’t forget the traditional Delphiniums and Foxgloves which always give a good show.

There’s plenty to plant out and do in the vegetable plot at the moment. Plant smaller quantities little and often to keep a steady supply of veg for the kitchen. Most garden centres sell packs of vegetable plants so it’s easy to plant out a few every fortnight as well as sowing seeds of radish, spring onions and basil.

Summer bedding can be planted outside from the end of May onwards, so long as we aren’t getting any late frosts. Antirrhinums, Asters and Lobelia first, leaving Marigolds, Begonias, Impatiens and Geraniums until the beginning of June if necessary. Water well to get established, then, feed fortnightly and dead head regularly. Look out for the new Impatiens Beacon which is Downy Mildew resistant, supplies will be limited, but if you do see them give them a go, trial results have been good so far.

Cover fruit bushes with netting to stop the birds picking your fruit before you do. Spray fruit trees before flowers open and after fruit has set to keep bugs under control. Provado Fruit and Veg Bug Killer is a good insecticide, but unfortunately fungicides for edible crops have been removed from the market. Keep bushes watered where possible if it’s dry to discourage mildews. Make sure that you clear up any diseased foliage when seen.

Hoe borders frequently, preferably on a nice sunny day and any weeds that are beginning to get established will wilt and die off quickly; regular hoeing will also allow air into the top layer of soil and encourage root growth.

Tomato, Cucumber and Pepper plants should not be planted outside until the end of May and inside need some heat at night if temperatures are dropping low.

As the weather improves the grass will start growing and need cutting. Do a light cut first, gradually reducing the mower height over several cuts. There’s plenty of moss in lawns again this year and MO Bacter organic moss treatment is the ideal product to use against it. It can be applied to your lawn any time from March through to September, it contains an organic fertilizer that releases over a 3 month period which digests the moss, greens the lawn and improves the soil. It leaves no unsightly black patches and scarifying is not necessary. An added bonus is that if you accidently get in on your borders it won’t harm the plants in them.

Watch out for slug damage on young herbaceous plants, and summer bedding such as Marigolds. Use slug pellets or one of the natural controls that are available. ‘Slug Gone’ is a relatively new product that is made from sheep’s wool, it’s sold in pellet form which you put round the base of plants and once dampened its small fibres act as an irritant to slugs. Many herbaceous plants flower in their first year and there’s always a good selection available on our outdoor tables. The first batch of West Country Lupins should be ready now with their many vibrant colours they make a delightful

estate planning Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death.

Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.

What is an ‘estate’

Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.

Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions. Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.

Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children. Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.

What is a Will? A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.

Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms - A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.

Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do.

When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.

Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements: - Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.

Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.

- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.

Inheritance tax It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.

- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax. - Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly. Benefits of a Will

The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries.

These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will:

How much does a Will cost?

You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.

This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

8 reasons not to check your investments every day into making the wrong decision. This is why as financial advisers; we recommend only viewing your investments on a monthly basis at the most.

The stock markets have been going through a volatile period this year. Firstly, inflation fees and the likelihood of increases in interest rate, followed more recently by the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. The Coronavirus pandemic initially caused the the stock markets to fall in March of 2020.

If you are still not convinced, here’s our top 8 reasons for not looking at your investments every day. Always Invest with the long-term in mind – Short term investing is all but impossible as there are too many variables that will affect your investments.

However, the falls caused by Covid-19 in March 2020 are now well behind us. If you were invested or held money in a pension back in 2020 and regularly checked your investments, it would have been easy to lose your nerve and to sell your investments, putting your money into cash. That would have been the worst possible decisions at the time. Sadly, many investors did exactly that, causing them to miss out on the market rebound which saw large gains.

Your investment strategy should not change because of short terms events – Trying to second guess the markets and making the right decision in the short term is all but impossible at the best of times. Looking at your investments will cause you unnecessary stress – Beings stressed by the value of your investments can lead you into masking the wrong decision in the long run.

Looking at your investments too often can lead you

76

finance

Looking to often will lead you into making emotional knee jerk decisions – Emotional investment decisions are rarely logical and often leads to making mistakes.

Martin Dodd is an Independent Financial Adviser providing financial planning advice in the Wolverhampton area. Midlands Investment Agency is based in Tettenhall High Street.

In volatile times it’s impossible to fully understand the mass of information available – Information overload massively increases the chances of you making poor decisions.

Contact him on 01902 742221 if you are concerned about your investments.

Investors should be thinking long-term – What is happening now is not likely to be that relevant in the long run. You could be invested for 30 or more.

As with any investment, there is no guarantee that the target return will be achieved, and investors may get back less than the amount they invested. Past performance and forecasts are not reliable indicators of future performance. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change.

For most investors, time is on our side – Let time make your investments work for you. It’s ‘time in’ the market not ‘timing’ the market. It is impossible to time the market constantly and outperformance is virtually impossible – Many have tried and just about all of them have failed.

an end to the divorce ‘blame-game’ The long awaited and significant amendments to the Divorce Laws in England and Wales will be in place from 6 April 2022 when the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 (also known as the “DDSA”) comes into effect. Previously there has been one ground for divorce- the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. If one party wished to start divorce proceedings immediately following separation, they had to rely on their spouse’s adultery, unreasonable behaviour, separation for 2 years with mutual consent or 5 years without.

seat ibiza fr The Seat Ibiza has long been accepted as one of the best cars in its category, the new model Ibiza really does have a sporty look to it and I suggest that it has a youthful appeal but more on that later, writes Bob Hickman.

feels solid and up to the standard of its siblings within the VAG stable. The engine in the particular FR derivative was a diminutive 1-litre, 999cc, 3-cylinder, this produced a reasonable 95bhp sufficient to give you a top speed of 116mph and a 0-60 gallop in about 11 seconds.

The vehicle has excellent safety and economical benefits from its ownership, low insurance group with reasonable fuel consumption really does make it an excellent buy.

The important CO2 figures is given as 124g/km, so not an expensive vehicle to tax. Seat claim the fuel figures could be between 47-51mpg and during a week and quite a few varied miles I only managed to achieve 42mpg according to the computer.

Several features that I think should be taken in to account, the Ibiza is a car, dare I say, for those who just want a car to do what it says on the package. Perhaps those people who buy a mobile phone, who only want the phone to make phone calls and don’t want the bells and whistles of internet and cameras and all the rest of the paraphernalia and I think the Ibiza will tick the box for a considerable amount of buying public.

The interior space was more than adequate, there was a lack of adjustments for the driver, just height and the reach were for the steering wheel, rear passengers couldn’t complain about the amount of space and for the size of the vehicle the boot was more than adequate.

I must explain, it still has a key yes, a remote feature but you put the key in the ignition to start the engine, a manual 5-speed gearbox, it had an old fashioned handbrake, it doesn’t have a plethora of electronic devices that worry . It doesn’t try to wrench the wheel out of your hand should you dare to cross a white line, it doesn’t apply the brakes if it deems you are too close to the vehicle in front, it is a car to drive in and not worrying about the other issues. This vehicle did not have rear parking aids and this was a particular feature that I actually did miss, it just meant you had to take more care reversing.

The basic price of the Seat Ibiza 1-litre FR manual was £19,955. Seat’s pricing structure is on the road and includes the first registration fee, number plates and 12 months road tax. It benefited from a 3-year or 60,000 miles mechanical warranty, a 12-year body warranty and 2-years Seat service mobility valid in more than 30 countries in Europe and its borders.

The Ibiza is available as either a 3 or 5 door with choices of equipment and trim levels and a whole plethora of engine options, so it can appeal to those who are looking for keen prices, high specifications and high quality. I love the sweeping dashboard, it has a soft touchy feel the quality has improved dramatically. The switchgear

suzuki swace The Suzuki Swace took me back quite a few years to when manufacturers got their heads together and produced cars that were the same except for the badges, Suzuki have been a partner of Toyota for sometime and have collaborated to create the Swace which is in effect a Toyota Corolla estate, and that is not a bad thing, writes Bob Hickman.

have a satellite navigation system, despite a huge 8” touchscreen it did detract slightly. Yes, you can plug your apple or android kit in and the maps appear and the navigational system does work. The driving perspective was one of a willing companion, a small green light on the dashboard EV lights up to tell you that you are driving on pure electric power, by gentle use of the brakes and acceleration you can put power back in to the battery system. The transition from battery to petrol was so smooth and the only discernible difference the EV light on th dashboard goes off and you go back in to petrol mode.

The Swace is equipped with Toyota’s 1.8 petrol hybrid system, which in itself is a little gem. It has 102bhp allied to a quite substantial powered 53bhp motor with automatic transmission, and another bonus, you can in fact drive the Swace on electric power for a short distance. The 0-62 sprint takes about 11 seconds and a top speed where legal is 112mph. I particularly like the fuel efficiency, even on my varied driving conditions according to the computer I achieved over 50mpg and on numerous occasions 60mpg was being achieved.

The prices range from £27,499 to £29,299 the Suzuki Swace is slightly different but with the brilliant reliability and engineering of Toyota under pinning it, this could well be a vehicle worthy of a second glance especially if you are in the marketplace for a good old fashioned estate car.

The Swace shares a lot with its Corolla sibling, the little changes that have been included, difference to the bumper and grille and their huge Suzuki badge is prolifically noticeable. The interior space in the Swace is really excellent, the amount of legroom in comparison to the alternative market is very generous, it can easily can accommodate 3 children in the rear and you can actually accommodate 5 people, 3 adults in the back for a short journey. The amount of boot space is quite considerable and when you factor in a false boot floor that can be removed, then the space becomes even greater. There are 2 trim levels available, the SZ-T and SZ5, both are well equipped vehicles, however, one item that I was somewhat disappointed with was the test vehicle did not
