flooring trends 2023/24 by

Jennifer Suzanne

One of the most asked questions, as an interior designer is, what flooring should I choose? To help get you started, I have outlined the flooring trends you can expect to see in 2023.

When choosing flooring, whether it is for a hallway, kitchen, living room, bathroom, or bedroom, choose the overall style you want to create; from contemporary and modern design to warm and traditional.

The type of flooring you decide on will have that instant impact to your interior ‘look and feel’ and is a design element you will keep for a number of years, so choosing the right flooring can be tricky.

Things to consider when updating your flooring is your everyday lifestyle, as it needs to complement your everyday living. A home with children or pets requires a hard wearing flooring type that needs to be stain resistant, easy to clean, or less likely to scratch easily. Also think about the noise factor and sunlight, as too much sun can damage a wood floor.

Budget is key as flooring types and designs can range in price per square metre and will be a big portion of it in terms of the quantities required. So consider the purchase and installation costs when choosing your flooring.

LATEST SPRING COLLECTIONS OUT NOW. NEW PATTERN BOOKS FROM BEAUMONTS & PRESTIGIOUS TEXTILES

1. SUSTAINABLE CARPETS

In recent client projects, I have been sourcing more natural, sustainable, handcrafted carpets for their homes. Sustainable carpet material crafted from renewable materials such as wool, sisal and seagrass, are natural products that are less harmful to the environment.

Wool carpet is a fantastic product for our homes and is naturally renewable as each sheep grows a new fleece every year. Wool can also be from the coat of a goat and spring is the time of year when all fleece is shorn off the animals and the protein fibre carded and spun into yarns for textile products.

Wool carpet is a great insulator with many benefits and is soft, easy to clean and naturally dirt-repellent. It is hard wearing too for high traffic areas.

Working in collaboration with world leaders of environmentally friendly carpets, I have a variety of patterns, textures and colour carpet samples for your interior carpet projects.

If you need further information please contact me.

2. TILE TRENDS CHECKERBOARD

Checkerboard is making a comeback, as recently suggested in ‘House Beautiful’ magazine, hottest flooring trends for 2023. Whilst it’s traditionally monochrome, we are also seeing modern alternatives using a variety of playful colour schemes. They are a great way to add pattern and visual interest to a room and they look especially good in hallways, bathrooms, and kitchens.

I recently worked with a client to transform a utility boot room space and used checkerboard floor tiles. This flooring style added a timeless, heritage feel that complemented the rest of the farmhouse interiors.

TERRACOTTA

Timeless terracotta tiles never really go out of fashion.

They are warm, earthy, rustic, a raw colour and traditional lived-in design. To add a contemporary twist, lay the tiles in a herringbone pattern.

STONE

Porcelain stone tiles in natural tones are making a comeback. Classic, chalky, softer tones reflect the landscape around us. Stone finishes are set to make a statement and remain a top choice in 2023.

GEOMETRIC

Don’t be afraid to inject vibrant shades and contemporary geometric flooring patterns into your home or commercial space.

Decorative geometric tiles draw the eye in and create a statement feature. Team with neutral paint shades and let the flooring command the attention.

ARTEFACT CUBE FLOORING

If you want to express your individual style in your flooring choice, cube flooring is a great option. I have selected this artefact cubestyle wood flooring pattern as trending styles for 2023/24.

The cube floor will look stunning in your entrance hallway or commercial property foyer.

NATURAL COLOUR

Natural, earthy, raw colours and texture, all create the perfect ambience to relax and unwind. There’s no better way to complement a relaxing space than with natural wood flooring.

Timeless wooden style patterns such as parquet and herringbone influence designs to add depth and character. Throughout 2023, we expect wooden aesthetics in herringbone to remain a popular choice. Herringbone can really open up a space as it’s a flowing pattern so it can make the illusion the room is bigger.

Remember to focus on getting your proportions right. For smaller spaces, use lighter flooring in small size herringbone. For open plan or large spaces, choose wide planks or oversized herringbone or chevron design.

NOIR DARK WOOD

A striking dark flooring instantly creates mystery and drama. Reflecting on the ‘film noir’ genre of escapism. Dark wooden flooring colour is a powerful flooring trend that is bold and beautiful and looks fantastic paired with a polished brass feature strip.

In a living room space, complement the flooring with fabrics, contemporary lighting and furnishings. Want more information on wooden flooring styles? Please contact Jennifer email jennifer@jennfersuzanne.co.uk

4. INDOOR TO OUTDOOR TILES

As the development of tile technology continues, we now have the option available to choose the same tile material for a smooth, seamless transition from inside to outside.

Enhancing our connection between the home and nature has become important to the homeowner, having their exterior and interiors complementing one another.

As a designer I collaborate with tile specification experts in the beginning of the build project to help give advice and source the best product.

It’s an important decision to know if the indoor tile is suitable for outdoors and it is anti-slip and weather/ frost proof. I can recommend the Venistone 20mm as a suitable indoor and outdoor tile and it is available in five colours.

Contact Jennifer to discuss your indoor and outdoor tile options.

There’s plenty to plant out and do in the vegetable plot now. Plant smaller quantities little and often to keep a steady supply of veg for the kitchen.

Tomato, Cucumber and Pepper plants should not be planted outside until the end of May and inside need some heat at night if temperatures are dropping low.

Watch out for slug damage on young herbaceous plants, and summer bedding such as Marigolds. Use slug pellets or one of the natural controls that are available. ‘Slug Gone’ is one such product that is made from sheep’s wool, it’s sold in pellet form which you put round the base of plants and once dampened its small fibres act as an irritant to slugs.

Summer bedding can be planted outside from the end of May onwards, so long as we aren’t getting any late frosts.

Antirrhinums, Asters and Lobelia first, leaving Marigolds, Begonias, Impatiens and Geraniums slightly later. Water well to get established, then, feed fortnightly and dead head regularly.

There’s plenty of moss in lawns again this year and MO Bacter organic moss treatment is the ideal product to use against it. It can be applied to your lawn any time from March through to September, it contains an organic fertilizer that releases over a 3 month period which digests the moss, greens the lawn and improves the soil. It leaves no unsightly black patches and scarifying is not necessary.

keep your bunny bouncing towards summer

Were almost at the turn of the season once again and it’s an ideal time to make sure your beloved bunny is fit, healthy and ready to bounce in to Summer.

Flystrike can be a problem for rabbits in the warmer weather, many flies are harmless but some, such as the bluebottle will lay their eggs on poor bunnies’ fur. When the eggs hatch the maggots begin to eat the rabbit’s flesh and sadly this can cause shock and death in a very short amount of time.

Flies are particularly attracted to soiled or damp fir around bunny’s bottom. It is good practice to check your rabbit daily throughout the year anyway, but especially in the warmer weather to ensure that they are clean and healthy. Pay particular attention to their behind, keep this area well groomed, clean and dry which will help minimise the risk of Flystrike and ensure that any issues are dealt with immediately. Should you notice any problems, ensure that you contact your Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible.

Rabbits teeth continuously grow throughout their lifetime, so it is vital that your rabbit is given the correct diet to ensure good dental health. Hay and grass are very important for a rabbit and should account for at least 80% of their diet, fresh hay should be available to them at all times. Good quality hay from a variety of sources is essential, as well as keeping the teeth healthy it also helps prevent boredom, keeps the jaw strong and maintains a healthy gut.

Dandelion have a lot of health benefits as they are high in fiber, antioxidants and a good source of minerals as well as vitamins. Rabbits absolutely love Dandelions and they can eat the leaves as well as the flower, these along with twigs can be mixed into the rabbit’s hay and be hidden to make his or her life more interesting. In the wild rabbits would forage for a large percentage of their time. Something for bunny to safely chew on would also be a good source of amusement as well as playing a valuable role in helping to keep their teeth growth under control.

Take care with Rabbit Mixes as they can cause bunny to feed selectively, picking out their favourite bits and not eating others that contain vital nutrients. Pellets on the other hand are full of fibre and have an even spread of nutrients to prevent selective feeding. Don’t let bunny fill up on too many pellets though, they need to eat enough hay to help keep their teeth healthy.

It’s a good idea to get an annual check-up with the Vet to ensure that your bunny stays in ‘tip hop’ I mean, tip top condition and keeps bouncing all year long!!!

Important always check that your garden plants are non-toxic for rabbits and that vegetables and herbs given to them are clean and not sprayed with chemicals. Do not feed your rabbit lawn mower grass cuttings. If you are ever concerned about your pet always consult your veterinarian.

an invitation to discover more

Dear Readers

Many of you will have heard about Tettenhall College. It’s that lovely school tucked away at the end of the high street in Tettenhall. A school whose walls create a beautiful boundary for our amazing facilities and our super pupils.

Those historic walls contain a school where the majority of the 500 pupils are British and local to this area –more than 80%. Yet it is also home to a wonderfully cosmopolitan boarding community of students from more than 24 countries, with 100 full time boarders thriving, growing and bringing so much to our school.

Perhaps you have friends whose children attend TC. You might have visited us for our wonderful annual fireworks event (more than 3,000 of you did last year!). Perhaps your children have played sport on our pitches, or perhaps you drive past regularly and spot our lovely twinkling lights on a dark evening.

TC is a school that’s thriving. Under its Headmaster Mr Chris McAllister, pupil numbers have never been healthier. The school is going from strength to strength in its 160th year, with a leadership team that is driven, ambitious and experienced. It’s a team that’s bringing the school together to make it greater than the sum of its parts.

There’s a core set of values followed on a daily basis at TC: Ambition, Character, Community, Creativity and Opportunity. Simple statements perhaps. Yet values

are only meaningful when the children understand their meaning and how they can personally bring them to life in everything they do.

Children at TC are known. They are individuals whose personal skills and talents form their individual learning plan. We aspire for academic achievement and excellence for every single pupil. That’s a given. Just take a look at our university destinations. They are excellent. What is often lost in the educational landscape of today, is the importance of knowing a child, to ensure that they are fulfilled in their learning, secure in their relationships and confident in themselves. TC nurtures this and when you meet the pupils, you’ll see it. When you meet our staff, you’ll understand it.

The story of TC could fill many books and would take many words to tell. Yet we would love for as many children as possible, to experience and benefit from all that we deliver. As a registered charity we continue in our commitment to bringing scholarship and bursary opportunities to deserving children. We also ensure that every family who commits to being part of the ‘TC family’ is known and valued.

The world of today is a challenging and complicated one. TC is committed to ensuring that every pupil who experiences its education will be well placed to tackle all that they will face with compassion, gratitude, intelligence, and as a citizen of our global world.

We can’t wait to meet you and welcome you to TC.

an action-packed term at old hall

A Shropshire school is gearing up for a packed summer term of adventure trips, competitive sporting fixtures, music performances, lavish drama productions and a royal celebration.

Old Hall School in Wellington will also be launching its latest programme of afterschool clubs as part of the ambitions Horizons programme.

Staff and pupils will be stepping into action as soon as they return from the Easter break with the first full week back featuring a whole-school cross country race and a voice concert for children in years three and four.

There will be four other concerts including musical performances by pupils throughout the term featuring piano, guitars and drums while they will also take part in a poetry recital.

The children will take on schools from across the region with more than 20 competitive fixtures planned next term including boys’ and girls’ cricket. In May pupils from as young as seven head off on residential trips to locations such as Anglesey, Culmington Manor and Cirencester for three-to-four day trips.

Matilda will take centre stage in June as years five and six hold their annual production following on from the highly successful comedy ‘Star Warts - The Umpire Strikes Back’ by years three and four at the end of the Lent Term.

Head of Old Hall Anna Karacan said today the school was determined to end the academic year on a high with a busy summer term full of opportunities to hone talents and try something new.

“It is exciting looking at the calendar which has events

every single week with the potential to be the absolute highlight of the term for pupils,” she added.

“I am extremely grateful to my team who work so hard to arrange all these wonderful events which give children the chance to perform, compete and to feel a real sense of achievement above and beyond what they might do in the classroom. It is a packed schedule which features so many different skills that there really is a chance for everyone to shine.”

The school will also host ABRSM Music examinations and LAMDA exams together with a summer fete before pupils break up for half term.

Plans are also in the pipeline for an event to mark the King’s Coronation in May which will bring families together for a celebration involving the entire school community.

“This term may officially mark the end of the academic year but at Old Hall we see it as full of potential beginnings and reasons to forge ahead in ensuring our pupils are achieving the best they can.

“We like to be busy and we like to continually look at where we can add something new to inspire our youngsters to have broad-based ambitions and grow in confidence.”

The Horizons programme of after school clubs this term includes Podcasting, History Mysteries, Coding, Athletics, Pottery and the O Zone club in the new outdoor classroom.

St Chad’s CofE First school

“The vision for the school as a loving family results in a community which celebrates diversity and values each individual as precious. Consequently, pupils love school and enjoy learning, St Chad’s Church of England (VC) First School is changing lives.”

Not our words, but the words contained in our most recent SIAMS inspection during which the school received the highest possible grade of “Excellent”.

The report describes the “powerful sense of mutual trust and nurture which characterises the school” leading to a “safe and secure learning environment” where all pupils including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and pupils considered to be disadvantaged are thriving.

Life at St. Chad’s has lasting impact.”

St Chad’s Church of England (VC) First School has been part of the lives of our families for generations. There can’t be many schools where children can talk about their grandparent’s grandparents attending before them.

Whilst we are a very forward looking, innovative school our school is also living history. Built in 1874 it stands proudly across from the church in the friendly village of Pattingham. Victorian log books, kept in school, give us glimpses of a bygone era, entries speak of ”two-week Whitsuntide holidays, school closure for harvesting.” Even “Chad” the rocking horse, that stands proudly in the corridor, is mentioned in 1906.

Whilst much has changed over the years one thing remains the same. St. Chad’s Church of England (VC) First School prides itself on its family feel.

We believe that every member of our school community is unique. As a church school our foundations for living and learning are built around the teachings of the bible. The message of God’s love and our core values of joy, peace, hope, wisdom, dignity and community are at the heart of school life at St Chad’s enabling us to inspire confident learners, who will thrive in an ever-changing world. From forest schools to French, music to maths, our curriculum supports the development of the whole child, mind, body and spirit. Our children are encouraged to be Geographers, Historians, Scientists, Writers, Mathematicians, Ecologists, Musicians and so much more besides.

Whilst we are very proud of our rich history, we are also very excited about the future. Now part of South Staffordshire Learning Partnership, a family of schools with the shared ambition of providing the best possible educational experience for our young people, we get to help to shape the future learning journeys of each of our students right up to the end of 6th Form. wgs students swap uk classroom for opportunity to teach in morocco

An exciting new partnership with Association Aghbalou, an educational charity, has offered students at Wolverhampton Grammar School the opportunity to teach young Moroccans in a school in the countryside outside Marrakech.

Saâd Baddou of Association Aghbalou said, “The visit by Wolverhampton Grammar students and teachers has had an enormous impact. We have been able to establish a co-operation between different levels of schooling and to help embed English teaching now and for the future.”

Maisie (16) who is interested in becoming a teacher found her interests in education were furthered by her time in Morocco. The Wolverhampton Grammar student said, “The children in my class didn’t speak any English but they were able to learn from us and start using words and phrases both inside and outside the classroom. It was rewarding to see the growth in their use of language by the end of the week. It has certainly made me even more determined to pursue a career in teaching.”

After six weeks of training and learning useful teaching skills, 10 WGS students accompanied by the Head and 2 teachers set off for Marrakech. Following a day of acclimatization and the chance to experience some local culture, it was soon time to visit L’École de Douar Shib, a primary school, 15 miles outside the city. It is believed that this is the first time that anyone has brought school students from overseas to teach and as a result the project has attracted the interest of the Moroccan Education Minister and local press.

The programme for the week consisted of 3 hours of English tuition every morning with other subjects such as Art, Music and Sport taught in the afternoon. WGS students were supported by students from L’École Normale Supérieure de Marrakech (part of the Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech) who are currently studying for teaching degrees.

Celebrating Diversity at WGHS

It is no secret that Wolverhampton Girls’ High School regularly produces some of the best exam results in the area. In the last academic year, 100% of students achieved grade 5 or above for Maths and English exams, with 84.2% of students achieving grades 7-9 in all of their GCSE subjects. Choosing a school, however, should be about more than academic excellence, and at WGHS, community comes first: the school’s aim is that every girl feels welcome, safe and happy when they are learning. Over the course of the past few months, staff and students have been working together to produce an exciting, inclusive program of events that are focussed on fun, engaging activities for girls to participate in.

Of course, the school offers extracurricular courses, such as the Duke of Edinburgh award, which is currently ongoing, but we wanted to go a step further for our students.

Last month, the school arranged a Culture Day, where students dressed in traditional clothing and strutted their stuff on the fashion show catwalk, as well as some girls organising a dance show to perform styles from all over the world. The atmosphere in the corridors and

at the various events that had been organised was unexplainable, with staff also taking part and embracing their roots. One girl’s response to the day was that she found it ‘heart-warming to know that (she) can be herself in school and not have to hide where (she) come(s) from.’

In the same week, students were encouraged to tap into their competitive sides in the annual House Winter Games. Students spent the day off timetable participating in a wide range of sporting games and activities. The sports events were just the beginning: different departments put on various events to meet everyone’s strengths, there was even a board game play-off! At the end of the day, the results were read out, announcing that Audley house were our 2023 winners. Events like this are what many of our students look forward to all year round, so to see such happy faces was a great reminder of how much WGHS has to offer.

Not every young person has the opportunity to show who they truly are, but at WGHS it is our mission to ensure that every student can flourish and be proud of where they come from. Academic excellence comes second to student happiness at our school.

• Weigh the fish mix and divide it equally into 4 balls. Make sure the eggs are dry then flatten a ball in your hand then carefully wrap it around the egg leaving no gaps. Repeat with all eggs.

• Turn the fryer on to 175oC and then in the 3 shallow bowls place the panko crumbs in one, flour with cayenne and salt in one and the fifth egg whisked up with a little salt in the third shallow bowl. One by one, pane the eggs by rolling them in flour, then egg and then in the panko breadcrumbs and set aside on the tray until all 4 are ready.

METHOD - read through first then measure out all of your ingredients before starting

• When the oil is hot fry the scotch eggs for 5 minutes and drain on kitchen roll. Allow to rest for a few minutes. Whilst resting mix together some 1 tbsp of dijon mustard with 3 tbsp of mayo and a squeeze of lemon.

• Slice the cucumber thinly lengthways and mix the watercress and excess herbs together then share between four plates. Squeeze a little lemon juice over the salad and place a dolop of dijon mayo on the side with a scotch egg. Fingers crossed your yolk is still runny. Serve with a cold glass of Prosecco or elderflower presse.

pattingham drama is busy rehearsing for its latest comedy play, ‘nigel slater’s toast’

In May, Pattingham Drama will be performing ‘Nigel Slater’s Toast’, a play written by Henry Filloux-Bennett and based on the British Book Awards Biography of the Year. ‘Toast’ is the story of Nigel Slater’s childhood in Wolverhampton, told through the tastes and smells he shares with his mother, culminating in the young Nigel’s escape to London. From making the perfect sherry trifle, through the playground politics of sweets, the rigid rules of restaurant dining, and a domestic war over cakes, this is a moving and evocative tale of love, loss and …… food, mainly toast!

Unashamedly intimate and occasionally unsettling, it has been translated into six languages and is a GCSE O level set text. Winner of six literary awards, including the National Book Awards British Biography of the Year, it is by turns funny and desperately sad. ‘Toast’ has been

made into a BBC film starring Helena Bonham Carter and Freddie Highmore and has been part of the Berlin, Warsaw and Taipai Film Festivals.

The amateur production takes place in Pattingham Village Hall starting on Wednesday 17th through to Saturday 20th May 2023, beginning each evening at 7.30pm. Drinks will be available from the bar.

The tickets cost just £10 each and are available by calling 01902 700748 or from the box office at boxoffice@ pattinghamdramagroup.co.uk.

[This amateur production of ‘Nigel Slater’s Toast’ is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. – www.concordtheatricals.co.uk]

ROYSTON BLYTHE ANNUAL PARTY

The annual Royston Blythe Team party returned this year for the first time in 3 years! This long-awaited event has always been the team`s highlight of the year and this year was no exception. Returning at The Park House, Shifnal, this year’s theme was Full on Glamour.

A great excuse to put on the glad rags, guests were greeted with Britain’s Got Talent’s finalists an amazing singer and saxophonists to kick off the evening. During dinner, Trixie the Drag Queen chose her victims to mock at the delight of the rest of the room. Then everyone was up on the dance floor with a Dream Girls tribute group. After a difficult few years, it was a great opportunity for the two salons to come together, celebrate all their hard work, an amazing team spirit and the fun ethos of this unique company.

THE ROYAL VISIT TO HEAVEN

Deborah Mitchell has been close friends with Nick and Royston for over 25 years. Her worldwide beauty brand Heaven has gone from strength to strength over the last 23 years. With many fans including Royalty and A- lists celebs, she has extending her Buisness empire with a new state of the art factory in Telford.

HRH the Queen Consort was invited by Deborah to revisit the factory after having to cancel an earlier date due to her resent illness. The private visit was the official opening of her new factory attended by her team and close friends.

Nick and Royston were asked to join the party and meet HRH, which was a great honour. Her warmth, humour and down to earth personality shone through and charmed everyone in the room.

It was an opportunity of a lifetime and a day they will never forget.

ROYSTON’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Royston’s birthday celebrations started with an impromptu invitation from close friend Niki from Jersey to join her and her family in Marbella to celebrate their son’s 18th Birthday.

The evening started at Marbella’s exclusive restaurant the ‘Supper Club’. It was the perfect venue for show stopping acts and entertainment, followed by a top DJ. The party was in full swing with Royston at the forefront dancing on the tables - a spectacular evening to start the weekend.

A surprise visit by friends Wes and Pete, continued the festivities for the following days. Stunning weather, fabulous shopping and exquisite food, and this was only the start! Returning back to the UK, the partying continued with a weekend in London with fabulous Kat and Robbie Hubble.

Dinner followed at one of Royston’s favourite and glamorous Asian restaurants, ‘Park Chinios’. The hedonistic club is the ultimate experience of exotic food sensations, singers, acrobats and burlesque dancers.

The perfect end to the perfect birthday.

Happy Birthday Royston! x

Serendipity

SERENDIPITY IS A ‘ONE OF A KIND ‘ LITTLE SHOP THAT NESTLES WITHIN CODSALL VILLAGE.

Most of its visitors will describe it as an Aladdin’s cave and spend many an hour mooching upstairs and downstairs where both old and new items for your home are displayed in a warm and homely environment. You will find an array of lamps, cosy throws, candles, ornaments, mirrors, gifts and also unusual outdoor items for your garden.

In 2022, the owner Dee O’Hara, decided to introduce a dress agency into part of the shop which has proven to be a great success.

High-end high street labels and designer brands for both men and women, have been selling well including handbags, shoes and accessories.

(All items are requested to be brought in on hangers, clean, ironed and lightly worn). After many enquiries, Dee has also decided to take in and sell Mother of the Bride outfits on a commission basis and also sell and hire out hats and fascinators for weddings, Ascot and Cheltenham races etc.

Special occasions can be very costly so it seems that it will be a very welcome addition to this growing dress agency.

(Anybody who is interested in bringing in wedding outfits are requested to call the shop first to arrange a time to discuss pricing and displaying).

creating your wedding theme in florals & foliage

When you start to plan your wedding, you will naturally notice that you are creating a style that is individual to yourselves. It may be a subtle theme with a twist of your style or a themed wedding that captures your favourite things. Most themes can be worked into your flowers. Very popular themes are woodland & rustic, boho styled, English afternoon tea and romantic & dreamy.

For the more creative couples, the ideas will include a more dominant focal theme. I have created some very eyecatching themed weddings as a florist.

There are always weddings I will remember designing for the fun and expressions that I see on people’s faces when the designs become a reality.

weddings 46
This rustic theme styled wedding was particularly memorable. We started with these lovely gypsophila posies for the bridesmaids, the stems bound in hessian and string, with a little teal diamante to complement the dresses.

The great thing about decorating your civil ceremony is that all items can be transferred over into the wedding breakfast room, so you get the joy of the displays ALL day!

It is great to continue your theme throughout the venue on your wedding day. These centrepieces create a real statement for your wedding breakfast. You can opt for low-level centrepieces or go for a tall arrangement which creates a WOW factor for you and your guests.

GET READY FOR A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER

“I always strive to make my clients feel perfect and this comes from not always feeling so great myself,” explains renowned skincare guru Deborah Mitchell, the face behind celebrity skincare brand Heaven Skincare. “As a teenager I suffered from severe acne and was left with scarring in my 20s. Then I had my children and, like many women, I’ve got far too many wobbly bits; added to that my age and you’ll often find me staring into the mirror examining the latest wrinkles and pigmentation. So yes, I understand how it feels to be unhappy with your skin but I also understand how to change that.”

Deborah and her highly trained Heaven Medispa team offer an impressive range of treatments, from fat-busting to wrinkle-reducing, using the very latest technology to soothe and smooth from top to toe. Delivering impressive results, the ethos behind every therapy is to ensure clients feel happy about themselves, to face the world with confidence and to be their beautiful best.

“It may feel like you’ve still got months until you head off on your summer holidays, but you can start planning ahead with a series of treatments that will have you feeling confident by the time you hit the beach.

“I want everyone who walks through the doors of a Heaven Medispa to know that we are there to guide them, to advise them, to pamper them and to make them feel great, whether that’s recommending one of our amazing skincare products or showcasing our highly effective and cutting-edge treatments.

“My exclusive Lipolis7 machine, for example, offers body contouring and shaping, and because we combine it with our Bee Slim massage, which has intensive movements, it helps reduce lymphatic fat too.”

Among the most popular treatments offered by Heaven is the new Collagen Facial. Developed exclusively by Deborah, it leaves skin looking refreshed, more youthful and radiant. Centred around her

bestselling Collagen Drops, it combines the very best anti-ageing products with unique hands-on massage techniques to deliver impressive results.

“My clients want great result fast and now, more than ever, they want value for money too – and that’s exactly what my Collagen Facial does. Because it combines my innovative Collagen Drops with products containing vitamin C it actually enhances collagen synthesis for an anti-ageing effect.

Heaven Skincare offers a one-stop shop for beauty perfection at its flagship salon in Shifnal, from deep mind-changing relaxation to the very best skincare products in the world. Whether you want to tone the tummy ready for the beach, enjoy the most effective anti-ageing facial or feel happier about the reflection in the mirror, all treatments start with a consultation to find out what it is you are looking for and how to achieve it.

“I understand that whatever procedure you opt for, it’s vital that you feel comfortable and in good hands. My Heaven angels are there to answer any questions you may have and advise you on how many treatments are required to get the right result for you. We want to give you the confidence to show off your body with pride, to feel just the way you want to and to enjoy summer with the biggest smile on your face,” adds Deborah.

Those summer holiday might still feel far off, but it’s the perfect time to prep for a beautiful summer. Heaven Skincare’s Medispa offers a range of innovative treatments designed to not only boost your confidence but soothe the mind and soul too.

hear the sounds of summer

As the days are getting longer and the warm summer nights approach isn’t it time you had your ears checked?

We think nothing of going to the optician or dentist but when it comes to our hearing there is often a reluctance to look for help. Accepting that you have a problem with your hearing is the first step. Now you can choose a hearing company that can help.

Where do I start?

Recommendation is always a great place to start. If a friend or family member has had great service then you can too! Or search online for your local audiologist, read the reviews and see what others have to say

Private Independent Audiologists

An independent hearing company, like our Hear in Hagley, Hear in Wombourne and Hear in Rubery clinics, offer a level of personal service that can’t often be provided by chain-based companies or the NHS. Our dedicated clinics are designed with you and your ears in mind!

What can I expect?

•Professional team

We pride ourselves on our professionalism and expertise. As fully qualified audiology professionals you are in safe hands. Our clinics at Hagley, Wombourne and Rubery are dedicated to hearing care, that’s just what we do.

•Personal service

You are important to us and we genuinely care about you and your ears. More often than not we can remember which hearing aids you are wearing if you pop in for filters or batteries. We are happy to chat about your health, the family and even the latest holiday you’ve been on!

We aim to give you the best customer experience, after all, this relationship can last for a number of years as we look after you on your hearing journey.

•Detailed Product Knowledge

Our excellent product knowledge with access to all the hearing aids on offer ensures that we can recommend the very latest technology to help you hear better.

Unlike the high street chains we are not tied to any particular manufacturer and we don’t have sales targets which means we can focus on you!

•Continuity of Care

As a small family business you are most likely to see the same audiologist – Jo or Sophie when you visit us. If its wax removal or hearing aid servicing, Wyll, Yvette and Julia are on hand to help. In larger organisations, you may see one of many audiologists or even a locum who will have to learn about your hearing history each time you visit.

•No need to rush

We like you to feel relaxed as we discuss your listening needs and will work with you to ensure you make the right decision. This can be done with a tea or coffee in hand, we even provide the biscuits!

Given the choice, where would you prefer to be seen when discussing your ears and hearing?

and divorce

Pensions can often be ignored on divorce, particularly when people are not legally represented.

However, ignoring any marital pension pots can mean people could miss out on potential long-term income and future financial security for their later years.

How will my pensions be taken into account by the court?

The total value of the pensions you have each acquired is taken into account. This means all your pensions, even those which accrued prior to the marriage not just the ones you or your ex-partner built up while you were married or in a civil partnership.

However, depending on the circumstances, a financial settlement can be reached which excludes pensions that

accumulated outside the period of the marriage (this can also include any period you spent living together, provided there wasn’t any break between you prior to any marriage / civil partnership).

For further information and advice relating to your pensions and resolution of your finances on divorce please contact Lisa Ridge on 01902 313311 or lisaridge@thornessolicitors. co.uk for further information or visit wwww.thornessolicitors.co.uk.

the pension world has suddenly become more generous

Jeremy Hunt’s budget in March brought about some significant changes to how pensions can be funded. The bottom line is that they have made them more generous.

Whilst not welcomed by all, this is a much needed improvement to the pension rules. Over the last decade the rules for pensions have not kept pace with inflation, and in fact went backwords. Additionally, the rules were leading to significant numbers of people permanently leaving the workforce well before the normal State Pension retirement age.

The biggest sector by far of the working population affected are high earners in the NHS. Consultants have been leaving the NHS early because the pension rules were costing them personally. In effect, consultants have been paying additional tax over and above their normal tax just to work. Understandably, they have been deciding in significant numbers to retire early. And once people retire, they rarely return to the workforce.

As such Jeremy Hunt has decided that to encourage

them not to leave the NHS, the rules for pensions will be changed subject to going through parliament to make pensions more generous for everyone.

So, what are the proposed changes to pensions that should take effect in 2023?

The Lifetime Allowance of £1,073,100 has been removed altogether. Previously this was the maximum amount that a pension could grow to before additionally tax charges would be applied. There are some exemptions if the member had protection in place. However, it is now possible for pension values to increase to an uncapped level.

The new maximum Annual Allowance will also increase from £40,000 a year to £60,000. This again will encourage more people to continue to work, pay taxes and not retire.

For ultra-high earners, the tapered annual allowance will also increase from £4,000 to £10,000 a year.

Why is this important to you.

66 finance

One of the reasons, why many people have been sceptical about pensions is the restricted rules. There is however very good reason to seriously consider pensions not only because of the rule changes, but also because of the benefits that they offer which are often overlooked.

Here are my reasons why pensions still have a place and should be considered in the right circumstances.

• What is invest will receive a tax advantage through tax relief.

• There is no tax on the growth of your investments whilst it remains invested.

• A tax-free withdrawal can be made from age 55 of up to 25%.

• Any residual pension fund value can potentially pass to the next generation and in some cases tax free.

• Pensions are currently exempt from Inheritance Tax.

It may be time to revisit your current pension situation.

The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested.

Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

estate planning

Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death.

What is an ‘estate’

Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions.

Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.

What is a Will?

A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.

Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do.

Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:

- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.

- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.

- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.

- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly.

Benefits of a Will

These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will: You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.

Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.

Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.

Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children.

Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.

Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms - A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.

When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.

Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.

Inheritance tax

It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.

The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries.

How

much does a Will cost?

This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

Brindley Kia is looking forward to a greener future thanks to the £2 million eco-conscious redevelopment of its Wolverhampton site.

Work is underway to demolish the existing building, and a new state of the art showroom will be built in its place. This is a massive investment for the group and shows the confidence in the quality of the Kia franchise that surpassed the massive milestone of 100,000 cars registered in the UK in 2022.

The Penn Road dealership is staying open throughout the development which started earlier this month and is expected to take around 10-months and cost £2 million. There will be a temporary Sales office on site along with our Aftersales departments. This will ensure that there will be minimal inconvenience for customers throughout the build.

Always ahead of the curve, the site continues the group’s eco-conscious objectives by installing green technology throughout the build and will include additional vehicle charging points for electric cars, as well as Solar panels to reduce the sites carbon footprint. In the last two years, the group has spent over £1,500,000 on both solar panels and electric car charging points to future proof the group as electric cars become increasingly popular.

The thriving business has been a landmark on the Penn Road for many years, becoming a Brindley site in 1997

and has represented the award-winning Kia franchise for almost twenty years. In that time Kia has grown beyond recognition in both the quality, and number of cars that it sells in the UK winning many awards including ‘Overall Car of the Year’ for their EV6 for 2022.

The fantastic growth the group has enjoyed over recent years, has led it to move their head office from Penn Road to a new 7-acre site at Featherstone that combines as a group car preparation and storage centre. It is also home of the group’s Fleet department which has grown massively and now supplies over 4000 cars per annum to customers all over the UK.

The Wolverhampton Kia site is one of two Kia dealerships that the group represents, the other located in Tipton. Other franchises represented by the group over 11 sites are: Honda, Hyundai, MG, Volvo, Nissan, Mazda and Maxus.

The Brindley Group was founded over 90 years ago, and enjoys a fantastic heritage, remaining one of the few large family-owned Motor Groups in the Midlands. Founded by Bill Brindley in 1931 selling Morris cars from a wooden shed in Codsall, it has grown from strength to strength. From the 1960’s the group was managed by Robin Brindley and under his diligent stewardship the group expanded to the size it is today. Robin remains the Chairman of Brindley Garages which in recent years has been run by his Stepson Che Watson, who is Managing Director.

SsangYong Musso Saracen

The SsangYong brand has changed so much recently, that you now really do need to check out the range of vehicles on offer, a previous range of somewhat non-descript models are now surprisingly good cars, writes Bob Hickman.

The SsangYong Vehicles from South Korean were always priced to undercut the competition. The current range continue this theme, now, however they are well-equipped and styled to stand out in a crowd.

The SsangYong Musso Saracen fits into the new category of huge working trucks, the Americans love this type of vehicle and if you look around today you will be surprised just how many of these big pick-up trucks are on our roads.

You literally have to climb into the vehicle, its height necessitates some assistance, especially if you are a little vertically challenged!! the running boards and a huge grab handle all help, the Musso is a big vehicle., once inside, you have impressive levels of luxury for what is essentially a working truck.

Passenger space is excellent, I remember the earlier twin cab pick up trucks where the rear passengers had no head, leg or shoulder room, not in the Musso, as its exterior size suggests, interior space is brilliant.

The driver benefits from a heated steering wheel, also electrical adjustment of the seat. Both the front seats are heated, but in addition they can be cooled. Electric windows and mirrors are further standard features, as is a large touchscreen with displays including a reversing camera which is a necessity on a vehicle of this size, apple play and android auto is included in addition to an excellent Tom Tom based satellite navigation system.

The Musso makes a huge statement sitting on its black alloy wheels which contrast nicely with the red paintwork, the black roller blind load cover and roll-over hoops add to the image and gives the Musso presence.

The Musso is powered by a 2.2-litre 181PS diesel engine pumping out 420Nm of pulling power, the vehicle is heavy at

nearly 2.2 tonnes but it can reach 115mph and return around 33mpg.

The trade user will note it can tow a 3.5-tonne trailer and carry a payload of just over a tonne in the back, very useful features if you are in the business of moving equipment. The SsangYong’s engine felt perfectly refined, with good pulling power when needed, yet able to cruise quietly enough at motorway speeds.

Economy is about where you would expect it be with a vehicle like this, and during my test it returned an average of 28 mpg during about 200 miles of mixed driving.

When I had the vehicle on test it arrived just as we were engulfed by the March snow fall, the proper four-wheel-drive system was an education, the vehicle was an able companion to be cocooned within, the snow- and ice-covered roads were dealt with without issue. The option of 2 High, 4 High and 4 Low range gears, controlled through its six-speed automatic gearbox, was a delight.

The big SsangYong’s handling was impressive for such a big vehicle. It did feel bouncy at times, that did not detract from the driving enjoyment, on the motorway and A class dual carriageway it felt a reassuring and comfortable companion.

With a 7 year, 150-000-mile warranty, a 2.2-litre diesel engine and 3.5-tonne towing capacity, this Saracen model is an attractive proposition, particularly if you run a business, which can make it a very financially cost-effective choice at £38,643.

Honda HR-V

Honda has introduced the 3rd generation of the HR-V and this particular derivative certainly stands out, writes Bob

The square design front is seriously making a statement, I am not convinced that the grille in the colour coded paintwork works, contrasting colours or chrome effect front grille I believe look better. If you get the opportunity have a look at the rear when the lights are on, it is a kaleidoscope of colour and really does look outstanding.

This latest generation has received an extensive overhaul and is now available purely as a hybrid utilising Honda’s brilliant 1.5-litre petrol engine, allied to batteries and electric power. No leads or plugs necessary, the engine recharges the battery.

The cabin is really spacious, and the HR-V comes, with Honda’s wonderful magic rear seats, so when you are not utilising the rear seats you have almost van-like carrying capacity, check them out. A combined petrol engine with the electric motors is the source of power, the transition between petrol and electric is seamless, the only way you know is a little EV light on the dashboard, but the economics of the HR-V are outstanding. The petrol engine produces 107bhp, add in to that the electric motors and you have quite a powerful vehicle. The 0-60 is claimed to be about 10.6 seconds and the top speed is 105mph, which in this day and age is possibly low but then again with our speed restrictions who needs more. The claimed combined fuel figure of 52.3 mpg should be achievable, I have to be honest during my sojourn with the HR-V I averaged 67mpg, perhaps I am light footed because I tended to be able to utilise EV power an awful lot of the time. CO2 g/km is quoted at 122g/km.

I loved the cabin, it is very, very spacious, and the 9” touchscreen is high up on the dashboard and it had a mixture of various dials behind the steering wheel, you need to get used to these features, and as a Honda owner myself, the familiarity between the two made life a lot easier.

Visibility is excellent due to the large windows. I particularly liked

the manoeuvrability, whilst you look at the vehicle you see it is a long vehicle but it was extremely easy to park. Comfort for passengers and the amount of space for all occupants was a delight.

The driver has a pleasant environment to be cocooned within, the automatic transmission worked well, the transition between electric and petrol power is impossible to note. The HR-V has 3 driving modes, Economy, Normal and Sport. In Sport mode it makes the throttle response slightly quicker and it makes the steering just a little heavier so you get more feedback if you decide to push on, but then again, I don’t think you buy this type of vehicle to push on.

The equipment that Honda have installed in the vehicle is on the high side, there is Adaptive Cruise Control, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, lane assist and lane departure features.

Without doubt the HR-V is a bright, modern looking vehicle with excellent technological features including, for those rear passengers who are obsessive with their electronic devices rear USB chargers.

Honda HR-V’s start from £26,960 and the on the road price of the HR-V Advance Style vehicle, as tested, was £32,605 and this did include an £825 premium for the wonderful Crystal Red metallic paint.

hiq inflating wolverhampton motorists’ spirits with free car checks!

Founded over a century ago in the year that Wolves once won the FA Cup, it’s safe to say that Chapel Ash-based HiQ is one of the most iconic garages in Wolverhampton.

Originally founded as Staffordshire Tyre Repair Company in 1908, HiQ has evolved like the city itself to become a leader in automotive services, with all 10 local mechanics boasting the highest qualifications in vehicle maintenance.

When it comes to conventional diesel and petrol cars – not to mention hybrids and EVs - there’s not a make and model of vehicle that the team doesn’t have experience in fixing. In many ways, very little has changed at the family-run garage over the years, with owner Simon Bennett insisting on tyre, wheel alignment and bumper-to-bumper car checks free of charge.

The customary honest service is the same as it has always been, in a warm and welcoming setting which separates HiQ from so many competitors. There are no hidden charges or nasty surprises when you book in with HiQ, only a memorable experience befitting of the Bennett family.

HiQ offers the full range of automotive services including MOTs, servicing, batteries, wheel balancing, brakes and all other mechanical repairs. Its investment in the latest Supertracker wheel alignment equipment also makes it one of the most technologically advanced garages in the area for this nature of work.

Meanwhile, its tyre range is one of the most extensive imaginable, with great performing products stored in-house for cars, vans, 4x4s, trailers, hatchbacks and sports utility vehicles. Whatever the budget, HiQ can find a solution.

Simon Bennett, who took over the reins from his dad Colin, said: “We’re extremely proud of our Wolverhampton roots and we feel like we’re a trusted part of the community.

“To see so many repeat customers does fill us with pride, but we will be equally thrilled to see some new faces, so if there are any motorists who haven’t dropped by, then we’d love to see them!”
