It’s no secret that energy prices have skyrocketed recently. With the news that millions of households could face a second record jump in energy bills next spring, on top of the estimated £139 increase this winter, there’s never been a better time to think about reducing your energy bills. Windows and exterior doors are vulnerable points for heat to escape, or for cold to enter, with windows typically accounting for 10% of total heat lost. The easiest and quickest way to make sure your home is insulated and warm for winter, whilst also protecting your pocket, is to upgrade to modern and energy efficient windows and doors now. You could save as much as 30-40% on your heating bills if you do! By making your home more energy efficient, you are also helping the environment too, so it’s a win-win situation.

We’re here to help energy proof your home and save you money this winter Get your quote today, call 01902 773831

WREATHS I am a huge fan of creating a warm welcome this holiday season, starting with your front door décor, so first on the list is a beautiful Christmas wreath. A wreath can not only set the tone, it’s often the first thing your guests will see when they come and visit or passersby will enjoy as the first impression of your home. A trend for 2021 will be DIY Christmas décor so why not think about creating your own wreaths and garlands this year. It’s a great way to get outside and collect cuttings of gorgeous natural foliage from leafy green ivy, holly and adding fallen pine cones, dried oranges and feathers.

Free Local Delivery & Free Disposal of Old Bed GARLANDS I like to make my own entrance door, staircase and mantle garland. Again using a collection of foliage and adding string lights wrapped around the greenery, it looks really festive and for a bit of luxury add in gold or silver, by spray painting your foliage and adding a beautiful velvet ribbon to tie in your Christmas colour theme. My favourite colours for this season are greens, gold, silver, shades of raspberry and plum tones, which are a contemporary twist on the classic red. Also if you prefer a more natural style this year, Christmas 2021 colour trends will be more softer and natural, neutral tones inspired by connecting your home with the outdoors.

CHRISTMAS TREE Next setting the scene for rest of your interior décor is ‘the Christmas tree’. Firstly are you a faux or a real tree fan, personally I have the mix of the two, I like a real Christmas tree in my living room and a faux tree in the kitchen. I love to decorate the trees in completely different styles, one very sophisticated and elegant and then the other tree can be a bolder colour and most importantly I have a bit of fun!

7

You can be creative as you like when it comes to decorating your tree but my 4 top tips for making it look more professional are: 1.BASE Start with a good base, whether it is real or faux, making sure the naked tree is looking at it’s best we don’t want a wonky lopsided tree so spend some time making sure that the tree is upright and the branches look even. If it’s a faux you can shape the branches by fluffing it and making the branches look more natural and if it’s a real you can trim and tidy until your happy with the shape.

N O W O N E L SA

2. THEME Choose a colour theme and stick with decorations that work with that theme for example John Lewis will have a selection of themed decorations and are great for inspiration. I have found that most retail companies colour code the decorations making it much easier to shop.

3. LIGHTS

FULL PAYMENT ON COMPLETION

Start with the lights always first! It’s so much more difficult to do this after you have added decorations like bauble and garlands.

I purchased an amazing set of vertical LED lights two years ago and they make my tree sparkle at night, so it is definitely worth investing in a set. LED will continue to be a trend this year, but it’s actually becoming a popular accessory for all year round, extending its use beyond just the festive season.

4. BALANCE Start from the top and work down to bottom, this way you can go back and check the tree and spot gaps. I buy my decoration in sets of 3, 6 or 12 and add in a Z shape. You can hang large baubles closer to the centre and small ones towards the end of the tree branch, your most precious delicate baubles can be hung higher on the tree to protect them from being damaged. The White company recommends 80 baubles for a 7.5 tree.

TABLE DECOR A key trend for Christmas table wear in 2021 will see white on white, keeping the style contemporary paired back elegance with fine bone china, beautiful linens and vintage-inspired candlesticks, teamed with tactile cushions, greenery and a sparkle wreath. I often look at companies like The White Company and Cox and Cox for inspirational ideas. Or if you prefer to be more nostalgic, traditional style, a big 2021 Christmas trend for your tableware will be dressing tables with vintage ornaments, old crockery and passed down tablecloths, which only evokes the best memories of the past and is also environmentally friendly. A great place to source is to shop around vintage shows or find local crafters that sell unique decorations that are hand made, or if you feeling creative you can make your from recycled materials. CANDLES Lets not forget scents in the home at Christmas this is the perfect time to add in a beautiful fragrant candle that fills your home with the scent of Christmas, there are so many options of candles that create scents that are Christmas themed. Look out for scent with cinnamon, mulled wine, Christmas pine tree, gingerbread and roast chestnuts. Or if its DIY scent the easiest way is to make one is to create a pomander ball, simply by poking cloves into fresh oranges. Simple but effective and they also make great decorations.

If you need more inspiration for Christmas décor, I’ll be sharing lots of my own personal Christmas style tips on my social media so please follow me on Instagram @jennifersuzanneinteriors

claverley farm logs Claverley Farm Logs is a family business based on the outskirts of the village of Claverley. Brothers Chris and Tim ensure the logs they sell are well seasoned and barn stored ready for you to burn. All of our Barn stored logs are 20% or less moisture and are a mix of oak, ash and Birch. The Kiln dried logs are less than 18% moisture and are oak, ash and birch. Both types are ideal as it is important to burn dry wood so not to damage your burner or chimney. Our logs are also approved by the Woodsure ‘Ready to Burn’ initiative. This

approval is testament that our logs are of the highest quality. We sell them in either Bulk Bags or loose Loads (2.5 bags worth) and deliver them up to a 12mile radius of our farm. The majority of our wood is locally soured and is from well managed woodlands. We look forward to seeing new and existing customers throughout this winter ahead. Please do telephone us for more information or go onto our website where you will see the full range of products that we sell which you can also purchase online.

antiques & curios from chillington hall to sell at cuttlestones in december Mr Ray Roberts, who sadly passed away last year. Locals will no doubt remember Ray for his dapper style and for driving around in his stunning vintage Bentley – which is among the lots we will be selling in December.”

A taxidermy menagerie and tribal art are just some of the treasures hailing from stately Chillington Hall near Brewood that will go under the hammer at local auction house Cuttlestones’ December Antiques Sale. The lots have been consigned by owner John Giffard as he and wife Crescent prepare to hand tenure of the main hall to the next generation, as Head Auctioneer & MD at Cuttlestones, Ben Gamble, explains:

Lots from Chillington and from Ray Roberts’ estate – including the 1949 Bentley Mark VI Sports model - will feature in a diverse catalogue which will also cover vintage advertising signs, paintings, furniture, jewellery, silver, ceramics and other traditional antiques.

“We’re honoured that John has chosen Cuttlestones to handle their attic sale lots – and we’ve made some really interesting finds. Chillington is a such a landmark we’re sure the items will generate significant interest not only from serious collectors but also from locals keen to invest in a piece of the estate’s history.

The two-day online auction will take place on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd December at Cuttlestones’ Penkridge Sale Room. Live online bidding, telephone and commission bidding options will be available and viewing will be strictly by appointment on Monday 29th & Tuesday 30th November. For details visit www.cuttlestones.co.uk or call 01785 714905.

“This sale is even more special as the catalogue also features items from the estate of well-known Penkridge Antiquarian book and antique dealer

tta awards night a great success!

Wolverhampton based company Tile Choice who now and now have 18 stores throughout the central region, plus an online store, for the second year running picked up another industry Gold Award in “Excellence in Marketing”. This is on the back of 2020 winning an award for “Best E-Commerce Website”.

On the evening of September 10th 2021 the tiling industry celebrated an “in person” get-together at the annual TTA Awards. This was the first industry gathering to have taken place for two years and there was a real sense of occasion and pleasure in being able to meet up for a celebration and enjoy a long-anticipated catch-up and chat with friends and colleagues old and new.

“This is the 6th time we have won a TTA Award and as a company, we’ve been working very hard the last year despite all the restrictions ensuring Tile Choice remains at the forefront of customer’s minds whilst also bringing focus to the tile industry and the products we sell within main stream media platforms”.

The Awards were held in a Covid-secure fashion, with all the recommended precautions taken. TTA would like to thank everyone who attended and who helped to make the evening safe and successful.

“We are extremely proud to be recognised by our piers at The Tile Association for the work our dedicated team have put in over the years to making Tile Choice a continuing success”.

The sold-out Awards night was held at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club, which was a great venue, and the evening was hosted once again by the ever-popular Kyran Bracken MBE. His hilarious stories from his illustrious career in international rugby (and

It was also a successful night for the TTA’s nominated charity Children Today. The fundraising draw raised a very impressive total of £1,600.

Dancing on Ice) once again kept everyone entertained. He also did a great job as a host for the evening, leading the presentations with pace, humour and professionalism. The spotlight however was firmly on the Award winners and TTA would once again like to congratulate all the winners and finalists. You are all a credit to our industry and your recognition at the TTA’s awards night is richly deserved.

we love reading at old hall! “I think it may even make it less intimidating for some so they are more likely to explore books independently. Outdoor learning is also very important to us and we are always looking at ways in which the children can take their lessons outside.”

A Shropshire school has been given a special gift to encourage youngsters to read more - a literacy ‘shed’ for the playground. The new Reading Shed at the Old Hall School in Wellington has been packed with books and forms part of an outdoor learning area for youngsters at the school. It was given to the school by a former member of staff to encourage reading for pleasure as much as for education.

Mr Stott said it was lovely to see the children get so excited to find out what books were inside the shed and talk about the books they would love to have in there.

Headteacher Mr Martin Stott said today that the school had held a special outdoor assembly to officially unveil the new shed and it had caused great excitement among the pupils.

“We are extremely grateful for this gift to the school. Staff past and present have always supported our drive to find imaginative ways to help the children enjoy learning and trying something new. This is a wonderful addition to the playground.”

“All our children go to the school library at least once a week and this is an additional vibrant place where children can choose from an extensive selection of different reading material,” he added.

The school will be holding a Discovery Morning, especially for younger children on January 22nd, 2022, when parents can come along and see the library and Reading Shed in action. For more information visit www.oldhall.co.uk or call 01952 223117.

“And the shed has helped to take some of this enthusiasm outside and allows the children to share a passion for books in a more informal setting.”

tettenhall college pupil published in captain sir tom moore’s new book - ‘100 reasons to hope’ Manon’s Mum Fabienne said: “The girls were so passionate about spreading ‘Happy News’ during the pandemic and it’s fantastic to see them recognised for it. They got to meet Captain Tom’s family and visit the garden where he made history through his sponsored walk to raise funds for the NHS.”

Two budding journalists from Shropshire have been recognised by the family of Captain Sir Tom Moore, after promoting positive news coverage to their community during lockdowns 1.0 and 2.0. Year 8 pupil at Tettenhall College Manon McAllister, and her friend Eva Spickernell, released their own newspaper ‘Happy News’ to their village of Beckbury, near Albrighton, to lift spirits of the locals during the pandemic, through positive and encouraging stories from Shropshire and around the globe.

Headmaster of Tettenhall College, Christopher McAllister added: “I’m incredibly proud of Manon for her inspiring display of kindness and encouragement. Community is a core value of the College and it’s great to see Manon carry this attribute outside of the College gates and into her neighbourhood.”

‘100 Reasons to Hope’ was published earlier this month and features 100 inspiring stories from all over the UK. Stories of faith, perseverance and the joy of community during a most difficult time.

travel

September and October have been exciting months in travel for lots of reasons. Gilly Bachelor, Personal Travel Consultant

The first three reasons are very special to me personally!

green lists have merged into one category, and you can now return to the UK without having to take a covid test before you leave your holiday destination.

I was a guest at the incredible Travel Industry Awards, it was an amazing event in London where I was a finalist for home-working Travel Agent of the Year. I did not win, it was a hugely impressive field of 8 agents, but I was delighted to be shortlisted and to take part in such an incredible event!

All travellers - except children under 5 - will still need to pre-book and pay for a covid test, which needs to be taken within two days of arriving back in the UK. However, new rules allowing travellers returning to England to take lateral flow tests instead of more expensive PCR tests came into force on 24 October, just in time for those returning from half term holidays. Fully vaccinated passengers will have to buy these tests from a Government authorised provider, and will need to upload photos of their Covid-19 tests for verification. You will also need to complete a Passenger Locator Form, no more than 48 hours before your return.

And the second reason? I hosted my first ‘live’ event at my offices in Brewood. Before Covid I used to host one a month, and it was wonderful to welcome 20 guests, to a presentation from Sandals Resorts. It was a fun evening with rum cocktails and jerk chicken! I’m also delighted to write that I’m getting wonderful feedback from my clients that are travelling, and new booking levels have rocketed over the past two months.

If you’re not fully vaccinated things are much more challenging, as you will still need to test within 72 hours of entering the UK, and you will also have to do PCR tests day 2 and 8 when you’re in the UK. You must also self-isolate for 10 days. Test to Release

There’s also great news for anyone that’s fully vaccinated if you’re looking to go on holiday! The Travel Traffic Light System has been simplified for fully vaccinated travellers, as the amber and

40

travel

is still an option for unvaccinated passengers who want to shorten their time in quarantine. Also, the red list remains, but it is now a lot shorter. The FCDO has updated its advice too! This is where a lot of people get confused as the Travel Traffic Light System is managed by the Department of Transport and is an assessment of risk from travellers returning to the UK. The FCDO’s ‘all but essential travel’ advice has often been at odds with the Department for Transport’s assessment of risk from travellers returning from these countries. So, it is great news that the FCDO has changed its advice on so many destinations; if its advice is against all but essential travel, almost all travel insurance policies will be void.

After a difficult 18 months, it has been incredible for the industry to get back to what they do best in creating stunning looks and the team at Royston Blythe couldn`t wait to show off their talent. `Competitions are a great motivator for the team. We have always encouraged our team to have dreams and we help them achieve these with developing their skills and talents. There are so many hairdressers out there, but consistent training and education is what set us and salons like us apart from them. We need to invest in our future hairdressers, to encourage school leavers that Hairdressing is a serious career to maintain salons high standards. We fear that in 10 years, there will be a real shortage of Hairdressers. The Colour Trophy recognises these talents and what a great way for clients to know they are having the very best stylist and colour technician in their area` says Nick Malenko.

winter weddings “What is there not to love about a Winter wedding?” Beautiful flowers, a wealth of foliages with beautiful fragrances and berries and colours that capture nature. Then mix them all together with fragrance, wood, candles and fairy lights giving the perfect combination for a magical and Wintery wedding. ADDING A WINTER THEME TO YOUR WEDDING Are you looking for a frosty morning Winter styled wedding or a romantic white winter wonderland wedding theme? The differences are somewhat slight but the overall theme captures a different colouring. A frosty Winter wedding has whites and ivory floral shades mixed with mixed foliages and berries. A sprinkle of silver glitter and touches of silver creates a crisp and fresh look.

ON TREND…. Silvery tones foliages such as Dusty Miller and succulents are very popular choices. They add great differences in textures and help to add interest and ultimately the frosty feeling!

weddings

DID YOU KNOW… One of the favourite berries to use in Winter displays is Hypericum. But did you know that the berries are available in traditional colours of reds but also in white, peach and even green. The magic of creating a Winter wonderland styled wedding is instantly captured by adding the snow factor! A bridal handtie looks fabulous with large open headed white roses, snow effect cones, mistletoe, white double freesias and touches of spruce. Gypsophila is still a favourite filler flower to use with brides and when using within a winter wonderland wedding can in moderation look like little touches of snow. To compliment the bridal flowers, then I suggest using tall branches with a minimum of 1 metre in height of willow that have been dusted in snow effect. Within the willow it is always a great idea to have fairy lights woven in. Displayed in a large heavy pot adds interest to corners of your venue, placed down your ceremony aisle and even as a centrepiece on your guest tables. To vary the colouring of your Winter wonderland wedding touches of champagne gold can add warmth and a touch of opulence. Lengths of crystals and white and ivory flowers draped within the willow or on your table linen look breathtaking.

Florist tips Use Winter foliages such as spruce, hellebores, mistletoe and holly. The spruce will instantly add the winter fragrance. Wherever possible include candles. In the daytime during your wedding breakfast they add an element of interest, however as the day light hours are reduced when the afternoon starts to get darker the candles add the magical feeling and then look great for your night celebration. A simple idea of crackle effect vases, votives, tall glass vases and even foliage garlands can be transformed by adding fairy lights within. There are so many different colours available but I always advise warm white colour. It matches the colour of your real candles perfectly. The classic winter flower is Amarylsis. Large flamboyant flowers are a must for Winter. An entrance table with snow willow and these blooms are eyecatching. If all these ideas sound just what you would like to decorate your home over the Christmas period, then why not pop into your local florist. They are there to help you style your home with flowers and foliage for Christmas. Take your favourite vase that matches your home décor and ask them to add the floral touch your require for your home.

If you work at a desk, in the workplace or at home, it’s too easy to stay sitting all day long only taking short, infrequent breaks and even staying put to eat lunch. It is no surprise that people are working longer and harder than ever before, the problem is that staying seated in the same position places strain on your back.

Wherever you are working, getting away from your desk at lunchtime and at regular intervals throughout your working day is vital, even if it’s just for 10-15 minutes.

celebrating 30 years in wolverhampton! skills. He was also lecturing in the UK and abroad, eager to share his knowledge and experiences.

Jonathon Pugh arrived in Wolverhampton in 1991 to take on a dental practice on the West Park. 30 years later he is still serving the people of Wolverhampton, now based at Parkdale Dental & Implant Clinic on Tettenhall Road.

The decision was made and Parkdale Dental & Implant Clinic was opened on Tettenhall Road. With Bibi focusing on business development, the clinic soon became extremely busy. Jon has placed over 5,000 implants in the last ten years with his practice being limited to implant work only. The demand for his time continues to go from strength to strength. He continues to accepts new patients for implant consultations and is dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for those who have lost or are losing teeth.

Jon was born and educated in Birmingham, graduating from the University of Birmingham in 1987 with honours and a distinction in clinical dentistry. His Master’s degree in Implant dentistry was completed at Warwick University, again with a distinction. During his early years in Wolverhampton, Jon worked as a general dentist but also set up an NHS orthodontic service (braces) for the city’s children. Though he enjoyed all aspects of dental work his main interest was in surgery, specifically the placement and restoration of dental implants.

Though born in Birmingham, Wolverhampton has been Jon’s home for many years. He now lives locally with his wife Bibi and their four children. Smile with confidence again with dental implants - come and meet Jon for a complimentary consultation. Please contact Parkdale Dental & Implant Clinic’s dedicated reception team on 01902 420654 to book your appointment today.

In 2011 Jon’s wife Bibi encouraged him to leave general dentistry and orthodontics to focus on implant dentistry. This was a truly difficult decision as Jon had worked on the West Park for 20 years, by this time building close relationships with his loyal patient base. However, the demands on his time were becoming overwhelming. His reputation in the implant world was well established by this time and it had become his passion. Jon was travelling across Europe to the world’s finest teaching institutions to hone his

festive feasts and fun with frisbees Long summer days feel like a distant memory and with the darker nights come the short cold days.

them regularly. Don’t forget to keep checking that their water bottles are working properly.

It’s not just us who feel the cold, our pets do too. As Autumn turns to winter it’s important for dogs to ease into exercise, especially if they have done less over the hot summer months so build the exercise up gradually and don’t forget the important warm up. On the dry days why not play ball or frisbee with them or even go for a run together if you’re feeling active yourself. On wet days you could play games around the house to add to their metal stimulation, you can also brush up on their training while having fun.

Take care when decorating the house for seasonal festivities, pets may chew on electric wires or decorations, some of which may give them a shock or can be very dangerous in other ways for your furry friend. Seasonal foliage can often be toxic to pets so keep them well out of reach, bear in mind that cats can jump pretty high up to investigate decorations. At this time of year it’s lovely to bake tasty treats for your loved ones and there are loads of homemade treat ideas online for cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies, parrots and other species of pets too, this is not only a tasty treat for them, but also adds enrichment to their lives. You can also find some great ideas for keeping the boredom away for your little friends, from snuffle mats to puzzle games and interactive feeders too.

Just like us humans not all dogs are the same, some dog breeds will be able to handle the cold much better than others, such as those with thick double coats like Siberian Huskies. Dogs with thin coats can be very vulnerable in cold weather as can small dogs, thinner dogs, puppies and older dogs, who will all get cold quicker. Pop a little coat on them if you feel they need it and watch out for signs of them being cold when you’re out, they may whine, seem anxious, shiver, lift their paws up or seem generally uncomfortable, get them home and warm them up. If they suffer with arthritis, the cold and wet weather can often make the joints feel stiffer, so keep the affected area warm and dry.

Don’t forget the Wildlife as the winter months approach, they will need some help, why not put some food out for them if you can spare it. Birds puff out their feathers to stay warm so please don’t mistake this for a fat bird, it could well be the complete opposite and they may really need some yummy scraps. Whatever you do ‘Enjoy the Festive feasts and fun with frisbees!’ Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

Cats may be reluctant to go out, preferring to stay inside and get cosy, well who can blame them! You may like to pop a litter tray down for them, if you have more than one cat, put more than one litter tray down as they often don’t like to share. Pets that live outside such as rabbits, will need plenty of extra warm bedding such as hay and straw. Hutches should be cleaned out regularly and checked daily to ensure that they are not damp. If it’s really cold bring them indoors and check

as the year ends... who just likes plants, these can be gift wrapped in cellophane and topped with a ribbon, as can any other plant we sell. For a living gift consider buying a shrub for the garden or a planted-up tub or hanging basket specifically designed for winter colour.

Well, we’ve made it to the end of another year! One that’s had many lows as well as a few highs. One of the constants about any year is the beauty and serenity that can come from having a garden and being in the fresh air. Life may throw all sorts at us, as it has done over the last two years, but there’s always the garden and outdoor space to ease a troubled mind. It may be coming towards the end of the year, but there’s always something that can still be done in the garden.

From the end of November, freshly cut Christmas trees will be available in centres. When you get your tree home, put it in a stand or pot that can be kept moist, as warm temperatures and dry air inside the home make the tree absorb water very rapidly. Keep away from hot radiators, open fires and TV sets. This also applies to rooted trees, especially if you’re planning on planting it in the garden after Christmas.

While it’s mild and there’s no frost in the ground plant bare root hedging and fruit trees. For some winter colour in the garden use shrubs such as Viburnum tinus, Skimmias, Callicarpa or Leucothoe. There is a wide choice of smaller shrubs available which can be planted into baskets and pots for colour during the winter and then transferred into the garden in the spring when you replant for summer.

We would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you all again in the spring.

Continue planting pansies, wallflowers and winter bedding, the sooner it’s done now the better. If we do get a sharp frost winter pansy flowers will droop down but once they thaw out during the day, they pop back up giving colour even on a cold day. Winter pansies and violas much prefer the colder days to the mild damp ones, which can cause leaf spot problems on the leaves. November is the ideal month for planting tulip bulbs. One of the best Christmas house plants is the Poinsettia. It gives instant colour in a room. Available from late November onwards, they like good light during the day and a warm room, never in a draught. Only water when the soil is dry and never stand in water for longer than 10 minutes. Anthuriums or Flamingo flowers are becoming more popular and the flowers will last for months. In a cooler room the brightly coloured cyclamen is ideal. They need good light at all times. Only water just as the foliage begins to wilt and make sure that any excess water is removed from saucers after 15 minutes. Christmas cacti have beautiful shrimp like red, pink, white or lavender flowers. Azaleas will flourish in either a warm or cool room and are very easy to keep, requiring plenty of water. Cacti and succulents are very popular again this year and are ideal presents for encouraging the younger generation into gardening. Planted Arrangements in baskets make an ideal present, both for the keen garden or for someone

why should you have lasting power of attorneys? for example, a relative who you don’t believe has your best interests at heart.

At Thornes we will always recommend to our clients that they consider having LPA’s for both Finance and Health & Wellbeing. Having an LPA in place means that you will have peace of mind that someone, or a number of people you know and who you trust (called attorneys) can make decisions on your behalf when you are no longer able to and make sure your wishes are met.

These have been the strangest of times and you may not yet feel confident to come out to visit us with your instruction! No need to worry, we can talk to you over the phone and agree safe ways of working together that work for you. To find out more about our legal services and to speak to a member of our Wills and Probate Team please call us on 01902 313311.

Any new LPA must be discussed with a qualified professional such as a solicitor, who must verify that you know what you are agreeing to and that you have not been coerced into signing. An LPA does not instantly give power to your ‘attorney’ though – it is only triggered when the appropriate circumstances arise i.e. when you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself. If you become incapacitated without an LPA, decision-making responsibilities could be awarded to anyone by the Court of Protection – including,

easy money for the tax collector available tax allowances. A Will also ensures that your money goes exactly where you intend it to.

The amount of money passing from one generation to the next is growing every year and more of us are being caught by the Inheritance Tax trap.

2. Make gifts from your assets now

As the Inheritance Tax (IHT) thresholds have now been frozen for over five years, every year the amount of tax raised is increasing. As far as HMRC is concerned, this is free money that they have to do very little to collect. HMRC can sit back and just wait for the money to arrive, year after year.

Making a gift during your lifetime can reduce the value of your estate immediately. You can also take advantage of the 7-year gift rule to reduce the IHT liability. 3. Invest in IHT planning investments There are various investment opportunities available that can be used that will take advantage of both the 7 year and 2 year rules that will reduce the tax burden. Most of these are designed to be low risk which fits in well with those that wish to avoid speculative investments.

But does it have to be that way? There are legal and legitimate ways to reduce and avoid IHT, for those that wish to plan. Over the last 6 months I have worked on one particular case where the family will reduce their IHT liability by over £300,000 when the planning comes to fruition. Not a small amount of saving I am sure you agree. The family were all of the opinion that they had already paid significant amounts of tax during their working lives, and they wanted to preserve as much as they could for the next generations.

4. Take out a life insurance policy The use of life insurance is often not discussed; however they can be very effective in helping ensure that the full amount of an estate can pass to the next generation. The proceeds of a life assurance policy are used to pay the IHT liability if the other options are not suitable.

So, it’s essential to consider all options when it comes to IHT planning. I often get asked when should planning start. It’s easier to say, when not to start. And that is when you get too old as time is important for any planning to be fully effective. Ideally conversations should start in your sixties, however sometimes we have been involved in planning when clients are in their late 80’s.

5. Spend it during your lifetime Finally, make the most of what you have and enjoy the money you have built up over your lifetime. My father always used to say, “there are no pockets in shrouds, so make sure you do everything that you want to before it is too late.”

So, what can you do and where should you start when it comes to IHT planning?

estate planning Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.

Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death. What is an ‘estate’

Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.

Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions. Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.

Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children. Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.

What is a Will? A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.

Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.

Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do. Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:

When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.

- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.

Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.

- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.

Inheritance tax

- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.

It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.

- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly.

The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries.

Benefits of a Will These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will:

How much does a Will cost?

You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.

This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

fiesta st-line edition When you have been the best selling car for over a decade you cannot afford to stand still, with over 1 1/4 million Fiesta’s sold, and myself being one of those purchasers many years ago, the all new Fiesta really is a very desirable car, writes Bob Hickman.

the equations covered.

There are several options to choose and specifications, Trend, Titanium,Titanium X, and in the test car ST-Line Edition. There are various options in engines, and if an automatic ticks the box, there is that version as well.

From a driving perspective the little engine was quite responsive, it thrived on revs, but woe betide you if you are in and around town or on countrified roads and are not doing in excess of at least 43mph, do not attempt to try 5th or 6th. They have obviously been incorporated to improve the CO emissions and fuel consumption, but they are only really suited for dual carriageway or motorway type of driving where the speed is higher. This was a disappointment.

The parking sensors and keyless entry together with a push/start button, cruise control , air conditioning, electric windows show that the little Fiesta is a well equipped vehicle.

The test car was fitted with a 1-litre turbo-charged petrol hybrid engine which produces 125bhp. This is joined with a 48volt battery pack which gives a little bit of extra assistance. During a reasonably lengthy test period, without too much motorway, I averaged 48mpg. Ford is claiming that the maximum speed for this diminutive little vehicle should be quite high at 126mph and they suggest a 0-62 gallop could be achieved in 9.4secs. They are also suggesting that the all important CO2 g/km will be 117.

The on the road price of the Fiesta ST-Line Edition was £21,160, the premium colour Chrome Blue paint added £500 and the Driver Assistance Pack added on £900 extra, making the on the road price £23,580.

This Fiesta with the ST-Line spec makes it a more sportier vehicle with a more visual appearance. Badges suggest this is a sporty derivative, it had aluminium pedals and a good degree of specification. Ride comfort is debatable, it has been sold as a sporty vehicle and the suspension and somewhat large 17” wheels give a firm ride, especially over poor road surfaces and uneven road. The plus side of the suspension is that the vehicle handles extremely well and at all times is balanced, the steering precise giving excellent feed back. The level of equipment on the ST-Line is quite extensive, it has a wonderful Satellite Navigational System, and an 8” screen that is easily understandable and having Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, it has all

skoda octavia iv se l hatch Skoda Octavia has many guises, it has converted thousands of people to the brand, and now the Octavia iV as it is badged, has made this family hatchback even more appealing, writes Bob Hickman. The Octavia is quite a bit bigger than most of its rivals but that having being said it is a wonderful vehicle to be cocooned in. My derivative was powered by a 1.4-litre engine allied to a 85 kW electric motor. The below floor level contains the 13 kWh battery pack which aids handling and lowers the centre of gravity. The power train produces quite a useful 204ps which should allow a 0-60 gallop in marginally over 7 seconds and a top speed where permissible of 136mph. The vehicle had a 6-speed automatic transmission. One of the big features though it is a hybrid, that means you can have up to 43miles of pure electric driving. The hybrid mode has 2 power sources, it allows charging the battery by using the recuperation on the move from the engine or you can plug in your charge cable and fully restore the battery from empty in just marginally over 3.5 hours. There can be little doubt by utilising your own power source the new Octavia has the ability to be a reasonably economical vehicle to run.

Apple Car Play and Android auto with a virtual cockpit display. Externally LED lights front and rear have been incorporated and there is a huge plethora of safety features. If you are a motorist that likes toys there is keyless entry and start system, Adaptive cruise control, automatic lights and rain sensing wipers, the front seats benefit from heating. Included are parking sensors both front and at the back, and another feature that is useful, is the auto brake hold.

The cabin itself is a relaxing environment with suede on the upholstery and the dashboard. There are some really useful features and it is rewarding to report there is ample space within the vehicle for 4 or 5 adults and the 450 litre boot really is cavernous compared to some other vehicles.

The Skoda Octavia iV SE L hatch has a recommended price on the road of £33,150, but Skoda added to the vehicle wonderful 19” alloy wheels as a £900 option, my vehicle also had a rear view parking camera at £605 and this together with the Pearlescent metallic paint at £595, all added to the cost implication.

From a technology point of view every vehicle within this particular SE range has a dual zone climate control, a wonderful 10” infotainment system incorporating
