my top 2023 trend tips to make your home look fabulous this winter! Jennifer Suzanne

AUTUMN AND WINTER 2023 TRENDS Now that the seasonal chill has set in and the stormy wet weather returns, homeowners are now spending more time indoors. Here are my top favourite winter design trends and how to make your property feel warm and snug with inspirational décor tips.

EARTHY AND COOL COLOUR A good foundation of winter interiors starts with colour scheme and the addition of fabrics to complement. At Jennifer Suzanne Interiors, I spend a considerable amount of thought on researching the perfect colour scheme and fabrics for my clients’ concept designs. In 2023, neutral shades of oatmeal and caramel are emerging as the new trends to soften up the ‘neutral grey trend’, these earthy colours fit well with wood accents, plants and natural fabrics to bring the outdoor feel indoors, making it cosy and welcoming. A touch of vibrancy with spice colours, such as cinnamon shades, adds richness to the winter months. Another colour trend of autumn into winter is of cool ocean-blue coastal colours such as deep blue shades, indigo and royal blue adding to the winter contemporary atmosphere. These blue shades look great paired with wood accents, plants and textured neutral accessories.

WINTER LAYERS AND TEXTURES Just as we would layer up our clothes to keep warm to brave the cold outdoors, the same goes for layering up your home ready for winter. Adding floor rugs, cushions, throw blankets and curtains alongside blinds creates a cosy environment during the winter months. Think about fabric textures as well as keeping to your chosen décor. Choose luxurious fabrics such as velvets, wool, faux fur - and I love the addition of a bouclé fabric to add in that contemporary statement.

VINTAGE, SECOND-HAND AND FURNITURE UPCYCLING Designers are sourcing second-hand furniture and existing furniture then upcycling it to make it feel like a new furniture piece. I love to upcycle if possible and I love the clients’ appreciation of how these items can bring warmth and soul to their homes. It’s always a fun journey to upcycle a furniture piece. I re-design it by selecting a new paint scheme, adding stencils and on lays, updating the handles and adding legs if the furniture benefits from added height. I also love to add fabric and wallpaper inserts, and mirror for that added extra designer touch. Also, clients are considering how they can make there homes as environmentally friendly as possible and are choosing to ask me as their designer, to source either secondhand, upcycled or upholstered to help the environment by less furniture going into landfill. Need advice of upcycling project? Please get in touch via my contact details.

THE CHRISTMAS EDIT AT JENNIFER SUZANNE INTERIORS Christmas time is all about creating a beautiful and inviting home and trending for 2023 is to go all out to impress by adding a touch of glamour with luxury metallics such as bronze, gold and champagne. Combine these with the rustic trends of farmhouse style, featuring things like vintage ornaments and quirky farmhouse characters. And for sustainable Christmas décor, switch out plastic and add more natural materials such as recycled wood, pinecones, holly, cinnamon sticks and handmade wreaths. I have selected my favorite Christmas styling from my Christmas edit including a battery powered lamp which is great for adding an ambient glow to any dark areas of your home, to quirky mice tea light holders. Cute woodland decorations are wearing beautifully detailed and jolly coordinating green jumpers and scarves. This will add some fun farmhouse-character to your home.

festive feasts and fun with frisbees Long summer days feel like a distant memory and with the darker nights come the short cold days.

and straw. Hutches should be cleaned out regularly and checked daily to ensure that they are not damp. If it’s really cold bring them indoors and check them regularly. Don’t forget to keep checking that their water bottles are working properly.

It’s not just us who feel the cold, our pets do too. As Autumn turns to winter it’s important for dogs to ease into exercise, especially if they have done less over the hot summer months so build the exercise up gradually and don’t forget the important warm up. On the dry days why not play ball or frisbee with them or even go for a run together if you’re feeling active yourself. On wet days you could play games around the house to add to their metal stimulation, you can also brush up on their training while having fun.

Take care when decorating the house for seasonal festivities, pets may chew on electric wires or decorations, some of which may give them a shock or can be very dangerous in other ways for your furry friend. Seasonal foliage can often be toxic to pets so keep them well out of reach, bear in mind that cats can jump pretty high up to investigate decorations. At this time of year it’s lovely to bake tasty treats for your loved ones and there are loads of homemade treat ideas online for cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies, parrots and other species of pets too, this is not only a tasty treat for them, but also adds enrichment to their lives. You can also find some great ideas for keeping the boredom away for your little friends, from snuffle mats to puzzle games and interactive feeders too.

Just like us humans not all dogs are the same, some dog breeds will be able to handle the cold much better than others, such as those with thick double coats like Siberian Huskies. Dogs with thin coats can be very vulnerable in cold weather as can small dogs, thinner dogs, puppies and older dogs, who will all get cold quicker. Pop a little coat on them if you feel they need it and watch out for signs of them being cold when you’re out, they may whine, seem anxious, shiver, lift their paws up or seem generally uncomfortable, get them home and warm them up. If they suffer with arthritis, the cold and wet weather can often make the joints feel stiffer, so keep the affected area warm and dry.

Don’t forget the Wildlife as the winter months approach, they will need some help, why not put some food out for them if you can spare it. Birds puff out their feathers to stay warm so please don’t mistake this for a fat bird, it could well be the complete opposite and they may really need some yummy scraps. Whatever you do ‘Enjoy the Festive feasts and fun with frisbees!’

Cats may be reluctant to go out, preferring to stay inside and get cosy, well who can blame them! You may like to pop a litter tray down for them, if you have more than one cat, put more than one litter tray down as they often don’t like to share. Pets that live outside such as rabbits, will need plenty of extra warm bedding such as hay

Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

While it’s mild and there’s no frost in the ground plant bare root hedging and fruit trees. For some winter colour in the garden use shrubs such as Viburnum tinus, Skimmias, Callicarpa or Leucothoe. There is a wide choice of smaller shrubs available which can be planted into baskets and pots for colour during the winter. Continue planting pansies, wallflowers and winter bedding, the sooner it’s done now the better. If we do get a sharp frost winter pansy flowers will droop down but once they thaw out during the day, they pop back up giving colour even on a cold day. One of the best Christmas house plants is the Poinsettia. It gives instant colour in a room. Available from late November onwards, they like good light during the day

and a warm room, never in a draught. Only water when the soil is dry and never stand in water for longer than 10 minutes. Planted Arrangements in baskets make an ideal present, both for the keen garden or for someone who just likes plants. For a living gift consider buying a shrub for the garden or a planted-up tub or hanging basket specifically designed for winter colour. From the end of November, freshly cut Christmas trees will be available in centres. When you get your tree home, put it in a stand or pot that can be kept moist, as warm temperatures and dry air inside the home make the tree absorb water very rapidly.

Real Christmas Trees & Holly Wreaths available from end of November (we’ll net and load them into your car for you)

duck & turkey thigh terrine with pickled walnut SERVES 6

1 star anise Thyme Flat leaf parsley Pickled walnuts Pancetta slices

INGREDIENTS: 500g of duck legs - skin on 350g of turkey thigh - skin on 100g shallots 4 garlic cloves

METHOD - read through first then measure out all of your ingredients before starting •

Place the whole peeled shallots, duck legs and turkey thigh in a roasting tin with enough goose fat to cover the meat, about a litre should be enough, add a sprig of thyme, 1 star anise and 4 garlic cloves cover with foil and cook for 3.5hrs at 110oC. Check the meat after about 2.5 hours as all ovens are different and yours could be ready sooner. Once out of the oven allow to cool down enough so you can take the skins off without burning your fingers. Put the skins back in the oven to crispen up. • Shred the turkey and duck into a mixing bowl with a small ladle of the goose fat, chopped parsley, chopped pickled walnuts and chop the cooked shallots into the mix too. If the mix seems a little dry just add more goose fat until it appears glossy. • Line the terrine with cling film, use butter to line the tin to help the cling film stick to the sides. Press the meat mixture into the terrine or any rectangular container will do. It is just to set the meat into a shape easy to slice. Chop and sprinkle the crispy skin over the top of the terrine and place in the fridge overnight. When ready to eat just pop out of the mould and slice into 2 cm slices. To serve Serve with bitter leaves, fig chutney (available on my website takefood.co.uk/recipes-and-stories/), a few slices of leftover pickled walnuts and a dark cereal bread toasted. I use pumpernickel but a walnut loaf would be great. METHOD - read through first then measure out all of your ingredients before starting

running the london marathon In April James Arnold is running the 2024 London Marathon, in memory of his great friend Josh Forster from Codsall, who we tragically lost in March, just 6 months before his 29th birthday.

Please make a small donation if you can. Your contribution will directly aid their impactful initiatives. Join us in honouring Josh’s memory and advocating for this important cause. Together, let’s work towards creating a world where nobody feels isolated in their journey.

He’s running for Movember, a charity dedicated to men’s mental health and suicide prevention.

James’ sights are set on completing the marathon in under 4 hours. A big challenge, but it’s nothing in comparison to the sobering statistic that across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with 3 out of 4 suicides in the UK being men.

Meet our Head Girl for 2023-24 particularly busy year ahead. When asked how she would manage her Head Girl responsibilities amongst all of this, she responded: “being chosen as Head Girl is something I am very proud of… there were many students who had faith in me and thought I would be a great fit for the role and I am pleased to be able to act as a role model for them.” At WGHS, the vertical form system creates an atmosphere of transparency and a family environment, where younger girls can openly and comfortable communicate with their older peers. When joining in year 7, girls automatically have a whole form group of ‘older sisters’ who can make the settling in process that little bit easier. On top of this, WGHS runs a series of workshops geared towards making friends and feeling happy at school, which year7 attended as a year group earlier this month.

Each year WGHS staff and students prepare for the announcement of our new Head Girl team and prefects. The application process is rigorous, and the students undergo various assessment stages before being added to a final shortlist. The calibre of candidates, as one would imagine, is always very high, but this year, Harriet Agbonmare was awarded the badge and has told us what it means to her to be the face of the student body. Being at Girls’ High has many perks: not only is WGHS an academically highachieving school, but the community that staff and students create is an integral part of the identity. Harriet, who was anti-bullying ambassador and Charity & citizenship prefect last academic year, particularly values the ideology that “everyone has a place at Girls’ High and you can be whoever you want to be, not a fixed identity but one that changes and grows with you”.

If you want to join our warm, inclusive and motivated student body, please see the admissions page on our school website for how to apply.

Sixth Form boarding offers the perfect stepping stone between home and university. Our senior boarding house provides a large modern communal area, a fun American themed diner and twin bedrooms with en-suite facilities. Within the safety net of the boarding community, students learn to adjust to the freedom and independence of being away from home. Time previously spent travelling to and from school can be used far more productively. Students become more involved in the many extra-curricular activities the school offers, with opportunities to take on leadership roles, helping to increase their confidence and to grow as individuals.

excellence at old hall school by head, anna karacan term. But I genuinely did also think all the work done each and every day at Old Hall throughout the year would mean we were in the best place to pass this latest challenge with flying colours too. And I am thrilled to say we did.

We know that children thrive when they feel secure and safe. They like routine, they become attached to their favourite things and people, and they like to know what is happening next! But children are also the original experts at adapting, learning new things and braving the unknown. In the years before a child reaches 11 they learn endless new skills and go through some of life’s most momentous transitions. And I believe they often do the latter with confidence and with a huge smile on their face if we, the teachers and parents, get that first bit right.

We met all the statutory requirements the ISI team must scrutinise, including safeguarding measures, and when they looked at our academic and other achievements they rated us excellent across the board - the highest rating you can get.

At Old Hall we had to put that theory to the test just as we were ready to celebrate a wonderful summer term in the final couple of weeks before the summer holidays. As we were putting the finishing touches to our transition day - when children get to meet their new teacher for the academic year ahead - we got “that call”. Within 24 hours an inspection team would be arriving to make sure all was well just as our entire community was adapting, trying something new and braving a little of the unknown.

I was particularly proud that they found our children to be excellent communicators and decisionmakers with high levels of academic achievement and abilities. Even while in a new situation the inspectors could see these children were happy and engaged learners. For me it confirmed what we believe, and that is that Old Hall is a great school. It also reassured and confirmed to us that we have created a school ethos of putting children first - where all children are enabled to reach their full potential and are ready to embrace new opportunities and situations. Their needs are of paramount importance and as a team we will always do all we can to ensure their wellbeing and success.

I imagine most headteachers would admit ideally an inspection would fall when their school is running to a tried and trusted routine that would show them off at their best. Transition day is exciting but somewhat unpredictable too with a degree of stepping outside of everyone’s comfort zone. We also had new staff not only getting the chance to meet their new class but also getting to know their new school.

The report was a tribute to all at Old Hall and also ended up being the best way to celebrate an excellent year and begin a new one.

I have to admit that this did all make my heart beat a little faster - I was a little concerned for everyone involved going through an inspection at such a busy point in the

160 years of excellence in education at tettenhall college one of a host of enrichment programmes or clubs from Duke of Edinburgh Award, sport, music, drama and many more!

Tettenhall College has enjoyed celebrating their 160-year anniversary this year with a fabulous array of events during Grand Celebration Week. Bringing together hundreds of people from the Tettenhall community, from pupils and staff, governors to Old Tettenhallians, parents, friends and family, everyone joined in commemorating the enduring commitment to excellence in education at Tettenhall College.

Boarding is a wonderful opportunity for pupils to experience independence and get a taste of life away from home in a safe, supported, and nurtured environment. Not only do boarders join us from overseas but from around the UK too which combined brings a wonderfully cosmopolitan and enriching aspect to the whole school. Increasingly, many of our day pupils are taking up the opportunity to try flexi or weekly boarding especially during busy examination periods or when preparing for major productions.

Through such celebrations it was clear to see that our pupils carry the strong and deeply embedded values of the school. Values which put ambition, character, community, creativity, and opportunity at the heart of everything we do. Discover Tettenhall College and see what we have to offer.

Scholarships and bursaries Tettenhall College offers a range of Scholarships which may be awarded for entry into years 7, 9 or 12. Tettenhall College is committed to ensuring that admission is available to as many deserving and qualifying pupils as possible. Scholarships are awarded in academic, sport, performing arts, art, and music. Families have the opportunity to apply for a bursary award, a means-tested assessment which may result in a percentage reduction in school fees.

Tettenhall College is a school with so much to offer, we offer pupils an encouraging, supportive, and caring environment to learn in. Small class sizes are a key strength for us, allowing teaching staff to understand their pupils and respond to their individual needs, whether academic, practical, or emotional. Every child’s contribution to school life is recognised and every success is shared. Outside of the classroom we are proud of the extensive range of activities, clubs, and societies our pupils all can access. discover goa By Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist Goa is India’s smallest and wealthiest state attracting more than two million tourists annually, drawn to its beautiful beaches thronged with swaying palm trees, the sedate pace of life and World Heritage architecture.

The Sé Cathedral, the largest church in India, is also located in Old Goa. The cathedral, completed in 1619 was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese over a Muslim army, which resulted in the capture of Goa. This spectacular building reflects the Portuguese –Manueline architecture and features an impressive Tuscan exterior and a magnificent Corinthian interior, where several elaborate paintings are displayed and the baptismal font, dating back to 1532, was used by St. Francis Xavier. Panaji, the capital of Goa, lies on the banks of the Madovi River and on the main square is another striking example of baroque architecture. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, surrounded by tall palm trees, features an ornate white façade with a large church bell, which was installed in 1871. This beautiful church was once a chapel, built by the Portuguese in 1541. Panaji, at that time, was the first port of call for Portuguese vessels sailing from Lisbon and the ship’s crews would frequent the chapel. The church was rebuilt in 1691 and is one of Goa’s main attractions.

Goa, ruled by the Portuguese for nearly 500 years, offers visitors a fascinating insight into a rich and vibrant culture and a colourful history. To discover Goa’s historical Portuguese influence I visited the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site and an outstanding example of baroque architecture. Located in Old Goa, the basilica is the final resting place of St. Francis Xavier, a Basque Roman Catholic missionary who co founded the Society of Jesus. Known as the Apostle of the Indies he is considered one of the most notable missionaries and pilgrims from all over the world visit this site to view his elaborately decorated silver casket. The Basilica, consecrated in 1605, is recognised as a landmark of Christianity and I was enthralled.

For nature lovers, an early morning visit to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, offers the ideal opportunity to admire the feathered residents and to hear the spellbinding birdsong. The sanctuary is located on the western tip of Charao Island and can be reached easily by taking the ferry from Ribandar Wharf, which is a 15 minute taxi ride from Panaji. This lush mangrove swamp covers 1.8 square kilometres and a wide variety of migratory and local birds including western reef heron and striated heron, little bittern, black bittern, red knot and jack snipe are attracted to this area. Flying foxes, jackals and crocodiles have been spotted and the watch-tower is the perfect spot to survey the beautiful surroundings. To view another example of Mother Nature’s beauty and to experience an unforgettable adventure I made my way to Dudhsagar Falls, located on the Mandovi River, 60 kilometres from Panaji. Although the site is not easy to get to and involves some arduous trekking for the inexperienced, you will be richly rewarded with a wonderful view of four tiers of cascading water tumbling down from over 300 metres. Visitors are welcome to take a dip in the cool waters but should beware of the inquisitive local monkeys who are keen to examine the contents of unattended bags! Goa offers an extensive selection of exotic beaches including Baga Beach, known for its crowded parties, enthusiastic nightlife and an abundance of beach shacks serving fresh seafood dishes. The popular water sports and dolphin cruises attract the hordes and national wind surfing competitions take place every year from September to November. For those seeking uninterrupted relaxation, Miramar Beach in Panjim is the ideal spot as there are no beach shacks and a more laid back vibe. After my extensive exploration I was keen to take a nap in the lap of luxury and headed to the Taj

Exotica Resort, which covers 56 acres and is located at Benaulim, a one hour drive from Panaji. On arrival, I was escorted to the check-in desk in a flash and I selected a luxury suite measuring 115 square metres. Located in the resort’s main building this sumptuously furnished suite, facing the Arabian Sea, consists of a separate living room with plush seating and a dining area and a bedroom featuring a large double bed swathed in cool, crisp linens and plump pillows. After a comfortable and deep slumber and a soothing bath in the luxurious tub, I headed for the Sala Da Pranzo for breakfast. I ordered the delicious homemade pancakes with maple syrup and a piping hot cup of tea and studied my itinerary for the day, which suggested a visit to the Benaulim or Vaddi beaches or a visit to the Jive Spa or activities including tennis, badminton, cricket or golf. I decided to head for the hotel’s pool and I selected a comfortable sun lounger. I ordered a glass of iced fresh orange juice and held my glass aloft to make a toast to gorgeous Goa and then I swiftly embarked on a wonderful snooze. ‘Top tip’ For more information on the featured accommodation visit tajhotels.com

here at the flower shop, we are already thinking about christmas! YES, I’M ALREADY PLANNING MY CHRISTMAS FLOWERS! My fairy lights are going up mid-November, then start of December sees the flowers arrive. Firstly, my door wreath! What can I say? As a florist they are amazing. If anyone has ever been on a wreath-making class that I hold, will realise how creative we can be. The amount of beautiful foliage we can include is endless. I always start with a mossed wreath frame then add masses of blue spruce. Not only does it smell amazing - just like a real Christmas tree smells - but the blue colour gives a great base to work from. I then add holly and eucalyptus, red berries, orange slices, cones, touches of thistles and cinnamon slices. At this stage I would be deciding what colour spray to use. I think I will be opting for gold this year with a touch of gold glitter. You can add fresh flowers to your door wreath, however, I personally enjoy seasonal foliage. I’m treating myself to another wreath inside my home. With this one I am going to create it to compliment the door wreath but add quirky novelties and baubles. Yes, you’ve guessed it… I’ll be adding fairy lights! You can buy great battery fairy lights on fine wire so the wire looks almost invisible. I’ll mist it gently every few days and it will stay great throughout December.

here are just some of the fabulous wreaths we create…. which is your favourite?

A SPECIAL WOW FOR THE DAY! I’m still a big kid at heart and I will decorate the fireplace ready for when Santa arrives on Christmas Eve. I aim for this display to be made 1 week before Christmas, so I get the excitement on the run up, but looks great for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Stockings hang either side of my fireplace display. Again, I use masses of blue spruce, bundles of holly and cones but in this display, I’ll add small touches of fresh flowers such as roses, gerberas, skimmia, eustoma and longlasting seasonal flowers. And. fairy lights will be included!

weddings THE ALL IMPORTANT CHRISTMAS TABLE CENTREPIECE I LOVE dressing the table for Christmas dinner. In my head I must think I’m running a famous restaurant! I try to fold the napkins in a fancy shape and add clusters of winter foliage with small cones on each place setting. My Christmas mats are all placed, and the cutlery is staged ready for the banquet - and my table cloth screams Christmas! My table always has a special floral arrangement. The shape this year will be a long display as I have a rectangular table. If I was using a round table then an allround display would be best. The selection will compliment the fireplace display but instead of fairy lights I’ll be adding real cream candles. That’s it… the table is READY!

what does winter mean to you? With the change in the weather and longer evenings Winter is a season cherished by many but not looked forward to by others! For those of us with good hearing the sound of crackling fires, carol singers and the crunch of footsteps on a frosty morning are easy to take for granted.

Even if you live alone you should still wear your hearing aids, the noises you make and your home makes are really important to stimulate the brain so that it’s ready to understand speech!

The most important thing is to enjoy the company of friends and family during the festive season and create special memories. If you can’t hear as well as you used to this can be a challenge.

We can test your hearing for FREE!

Our expert audiologists and earcare specialists are on hand to offer great, friendly advice and look after you and your ears.

How can you help yourself?

We can check your ears for earwax and remove it for you safely and effectively in our clinic using the very best equipment considered to be the gold standard in earcare

If you need advice on the latest hearing aid technology, appropriate assisted listening devices or how to connect to your mobile phone, we can help!

Position yourself: Choose a seat that has it’s back to a wall wherever possible. This will help to reduce the effect of background noise. Good lighting will also help you focus on the people speaking

Relax: Anxiety and stress can make it harder to concentrate, try to stay relaxed

Limit the numbers: with a hearing loss it becomes very difficult to follow group conversations. Try to stick to small groups so you won’t feel left out

How can we help?

Don’t be left out of those special Christmas conversation this year, we can help.

Use your hearing aids if you have them – you should try to wear your hearing aids as much as possible not just for those occasions when you think you might need them! The biggest mistake people make is to pick and choose when they wear their hearing aids, it simply won’t work and you’ll be left feeling disappointed when you really want to hear. Your brain needs to be well trained to be able to listen, this can take time.

sell the family home and split the sale proceeds by agreement and go their separate ways only to find that the ex-spouse makes financial claims against them at a future date which can be several years later as there is no time limit to making a claim.

A financial remedy order is a court order that sets out the financial agreement a divorcing couple have reached which prevents either spouse making future claims against the other spouse or their estate in the event of their death. The financial remedy order covers the redistribution of the assets within the marriage, for example, the family home, savings and investments and pensions. These assets need to be divided by agreement at the time the parties get divorced by way of obtaining a financial remedy order approved by the court as only a financial remedy order will bring the financial side of the marriage to a conclusion and prevent either spouse from making future financial claims against the other or the other’s estate in the event of their death. Many couples get divorced,

what happens when you stop working? planning for the next chapter of life (retirement planning) Why Now is the Perfect Time to Start

financial planning today, you have more time to ensure that your plans come to fruition. Clearly understanding where you today, will help ensure that if you have to do some catching up, it will much easier even when you are within a 15-year the end goal. By planning for longer, you’re far more likely to achieve your goals and make the next chapter of life what you want it to be.

For many individuals in their 50s, the thought of retirement is both tantalisingly close and yet alarmingly near at the same time. With retirement just over the horizon for some, the next chapter of life looms large. It should be full of promise, relaxation, and perhaps a bit of adventure. However, to get the next chapter of life (retirement years) right, it’s imperative to get everything in order sooner rather than later. Here’s why.

3. When to Begin Your Retirement Journey While the best advice is always “the earlier, the better”, it’s never too late. Starting in your 50s still offers a considerable runway. The critical factor is to be proactive. Begin by evaluating your current financial status, work out what savings and investments you have, considering retirement options, and consulting financial experts is for most people very helpful and enlightening.

1. The Clock is Ticking: Seize the Day! If you’re over 50 and aspire to hang up your work boots in the next 15 years, there’s a ticking clock in the background. While 15 years might seem like a long time, in the world of financial planning, it’s just around the corner. With each passing day, the window to make impactful financial decisions narrows. So, now is the opportune time to delve deep into your retirement plans and lay a robust foundation.

4. Create Your Retirement Road Map The journey towards the next chapter of life (a worryfree retirement) is like traversing unfamiliar terrain: having a map is indispensable. Creating a ‘Retirement Road Map’ serves as a blueprint for your financial future. It not only details your savings and investment trajectory but also aligns with life goals and milestones

2. The Power of Early Planning Though one might argue that you’re already in the latter part of your career, there’s a distinct advantage to planning now rather than later. By starting your

In Conclusion

you foresee in your retirement years. This holistic view ensures no stone remains unturned.

The transition into retirement is a significant life event, and thorough preparation is key. While it might be tempting to think there’s plenty of time left, the truth is, every moment counts. Your 50s offer a unique blend of life experience and time – a combination perfect for laying down strong retirement plans.

5. Understanding Your Income Needs This is a big one. Understanding your income needs during retirement can be a tricky affair. But it’s essential to work out what income you will need. So, it’s a step you can’t afford to skip. You must work out how much you’ll need monthly or annually so that you can make the most of life once you stop working. Also, remember to account for inflation, unforeseen medical expenses, and other potential outgoings. This evaluation will provide you with clarity on whether you’re saving sufficiently or if adjustments are needed.

So, as the saying goes, “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” Your future retired self will thank you for it. The value of your investments can go down and up in value. Capital at risk.

6. It’s Not Just About the Money While finances are a really important part of retirement planning, envisioning your retired life’s activities is just as important. Do you see yourself travelling the world? Perhaps taking up a hobby or dedicating time to a cause close to your heart? Or maybe just enjoying the simple pleasures, like spending time with grandchildren or gardening? Knowing what these aspirations are will help in budgeting for them and ensures you’re financially and emotionally prepared for this new chapter.

estate planning Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death.

would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried. Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.

What is an ‘estate’ Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions.

Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children.

Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.

Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.

What is a Will? A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.

Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms - A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.

Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do. Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:

When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.

- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it. - Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.

Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.

- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.

Inheritance tax It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.

- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly. Benefits of a Will

The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries.

These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will: You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.

How much does a Will cost? This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you

first stop wolverhampton’s seasonal fashion statement! As the leaves begin to fall and the chillier winds start to blow, we can spend a long time thinking about what seasonal fashion accessories to wear this Autumn, never mind what tyres to wrap our car in.

Not only does First Stop Wolverhampton stock the very best performing all-season products, but the team is also offering free tyre checks to all motorists as the temperatures begin to cool, to ensure all customers are as safe as possible as the nights begin to draw in.

If First Stop Wolverhampton said that an all-season tyre was the most important purchase anyone could make right now then some people might raise an eyebrow, but the difference between these products and a typical summer tyre really are like night and day.

First Stop Wolverhampton owner Simon Bennett said: “We feel that a balance can be struck where families can drive safely in all road conditions in the UK without breaking the bank, and all-season tyres strikes that perfect balance for many motorists.”

An all-season tyre offers a balance of capabilities, providing great performance in wet and dry conditions, particularly when temperatures drop below 7 degrees. They have tread depths and rubber compounds that are engineered to provide longer tread life than summer tyres and are capable of providing superior grip in the colder months.

First Stop Wolverhampton, situated in Chapel Ash, offers the full range of automotive services including MOTs, servicing, batteries, wheel balancing, brakes and all other mechanical repairs. Its wheel alignment equipment also makes it one of the most technologically advanced garages in the city. And it goes without saying that its range of tyres is amongst the most comprehensive in Wolverhampton, with a wide range of products readily available to suit the driving styles and budgets of all motorists.

In other words, they are a fashionable choice for this time of year and a product that First Stop Wolverhampton recommends highly. What’s more, there is no need to change back to a summer tyre in the months ahead, as an all-season tyre does exactly what it says, performing all year round.

honda jazz ex hybrid The Honda Jazz brought a unique approach to the car market, its internal space belies its external dimensions and now nearly 20 years plus after the 1st incarnation of the Jazz, the latest derivative has hit the streets, writes Bob Hickman. This new refreshed Jazz has introduced sporty styling and increased specification levels and an increase in performance with more power available. Externally the changes are simple, the iconic shape of the Jazz hasn’t really changed. The bumpers have been slightly modified but put the two models’ side by side which I was able to do, and you notice the subtle changes. It is the interior and the driving dynamics that are the most important aspects of the new Jazz. It has been built to comply with all the green issues and the ultra-efficient hybrid power train now has 10kW increase in power for a smoother, more refined driving experience. The hybrid technology and increased power output to 90kW ensures proper responses, improved performance and extra power. Although extra power has been achieved it has not seen an increase in CO2 emissions and this is an important feature.

quality and a panache to them, and the Jazz which has been around for so long now, ticks all the relevant boxes and it encourages a relaxed rewarding driving style. The dashboard itself has been re-designed and has an almost minimalistic appearance, a lot of the information is contained within the touch screen and there is also a plethora of other information on the dashboard.

The concept of the Jazz has always been correct, it is a vehicle that has wonderful interior space and the magic seating arrangements, that have to be seen to be believed. You could actually get a washing machine in the back of the car. Serious amounts of glass in the interior is always welcome, pleasant place to be ensconced within. The very small, thin A pillars i.e. the windscreen, windscreen surround, make all round visibility exceptionally good and gives unrivalled forward visibility.

The interior can easily accommodate 5 adults at a push but is more suited to 2 adults in the front and 2 in the back or 3 children. The boot is adequate for carrying capacity and if you drop the seats, you have multiple ways of this being done and the capacity increases dramatically. All the models within the jazz range are equipped with ABS and a plethora of air bags, other features included as standard was the speed limiter, lane departure warning devices and various items which include a traffic sign recogniser. It is gratifying to note that you can cancel some of these defaults settings so you’re actually driving the car as opposed to the car driving you.

There is only one engine choice, a 1.5-litre petrol engine, allied to an electric motor this gives wonderful performance, linear like acceleration and very low CO2 emissions. Combined figures could possibly be in the mid-60’s and at one occasion I actually saw 80.4mpg shown on the computer. The Jazz has always been a safe and dependable vehicle, some say a little boring, but Honda’s have a

seat leon hatchback 1.5 tsi evo fr sport The market place for a conventional family car is diminishing with the plethora of SUV’s however the Seat Leon fits in to this category. I do like the looks of the Leon it is quirky and of course being from the Seat factory you know it is going to be a quality vehicle because a lot of the under pining’s are from the famous Volkswagen, Audi stable, writes Bob Hickman. The Leon is a, very pleasant vehicle. The triangular daytime running lights seem to have been unified as one of Seats focus points and the trim on the FR version, which I had, looked extremely good. The interior lighting is something you need to experience to appreciate. The driving perspective of the Leon is good, you easily get yourself comfortable, with loads of adjustments of the seats for driver and passenger and the amount of room in the cabin is exceptional.

found on the Leon was a rear parking camera. Yes, there was an absolute plethora of parking sensors front, rear and side, but the reassurance of the camera how close you were getting to the item while the parking sensors were screaming at you to stop is a feature I miss.

One thing that I have to be honest and upfront about, I do not like the way car manufacturers are incorporating almost every feature on to the large touch screen. If you want to adjust the heating, adjust the radio controls, to reduce a whole plethora of features you need to avert your eyes when you are perhaps on the motorway to touch these particular sliding features. I am not a lover of the way manufactures are moving to everything being touchscreen. I prefer to have a button on the steering wheel, something on the stalk, but perhaps I am old fashioned.

On the motorway or the dual carriageway, the Seat is a quiet and an able performer, there is very little wind noise and I found it be extremely stable when you were cruising at the legal limit. It didn’t seem to be bother at all by overtaking lorries or the odd cross wind.

The Leon as tested had a 1.5-litre engine and to my surprise had a 6-speed manual gearbox. It had a reasonably low CO2 emissions and a 0-60 gallop can be done in marginally over 9 seconds and a top speed for those interested is 129mph. The average fuel consumption figures by the manufacturer are given between 45 and 49mpg and on several occasions I eclipsed 50mpg which I think is exceptionally good.

The boot space on the Leon at 380 litres is ok, it can swallow up the suitcases, pushchair, or a golf bag at a push, it is not overly generous and there is also a large sill area to overcome to put heavier items in to the boot. I do like the factor that the rear 60/40 seats split and therefore can make quite a big carrying capacity. The whole Leon range is a safety conscious vehicle with 6 air bags, and a variety of collision warnings and automatic emergency braking features.

The Leon is without doubt a very user-friendly comfortable family car, it does everything, to use a cliché, it said it would do on the box, in and around town it was an adequate, able and comfortable companion. The driver can get himself comfortable with a steering wheel that has a wide range of up and down, in and out, and the driver can adjust the seat in many different ways. The visibility is also good, both front and rear, and another feature that I was disappointed not to have

The Leon range vary from £23,335 to £32,235, the car as tested, the 1.5-litre TSI EVO FR Sport had an on the road price of £29,970 but this did include a safety and driving pack, and a spare space saver wheel at £125.
