FARMHOUSE NEUTRALS
In keeping with the popular natural country farmhouse interior décor, decorate this Christmas with white, black, navy, natural wood tones and other neutrals which can all look just as effective and festive as the more traditional red and green Christmas colours. The best Christmas decor is the kind that matches your existing home colour scheme. You don’t have to go all out on red and green if that’s not your normal year-round aesthetic.
NATURAL & WOODLAND CREATURES
Nature-inspired Christmas décor includes natural materials like pine cones, flowers and dried fruit. A woodland theme opens the door for decorations depicting many of nature’s creatures, including woodland mice, deer, birds, and other forest animals.
Woodland animals dressed with cosy-knit jumpers and holding presents & snowballs are popular for decoration and add so much fun and personality to your Christmas tree décor; it almost brings your tree to life.

LIGHT IT UP
LED lights seem to get smaller every year. This makes it possible to add them into garlands, wreaths or even trees, with strings of LED lights already fitted so there’s less faffing and plugging in. Gorgeous LED light-up stars look beautiful on a fire place mantle and the warm glow of the lights makes the room feel so cosy and welcoming. It’s certainly not Christmas without adding lots of string lighting ambience around the home.

FLOCKED SNOW-COVERED TREES
Flocked, fake and fabulous Christmas trees are trending this season.
You may be wondering “What is a flocked tree?”. They are artificial Christmas trees that have been dusted or flocked with a generous amount of fake snow.
Decorating a flocked tree can be as simple or as lavish as you like. You can leave it natural and just let the flocking do the talking or you can use the wintery fake snow as a neutral background to offset your colourful ornaments.

DIY DÉCOR AND CRAFT CLASSES
Last year, I was lucky enough to attend a fabulous Christmas door wreath-making class and I certainly see this a growing trends of DIY décor. Getting creative and making your own Christmas displays is back by popular demand for 2022. Look out for your local floristry shop for Christmas wreath workshops.
With the nights drawing in, it’s a great time to get to grips with learning a new craft and planning to make your own decorations that you’ve always liked the look of; from crochet, lino cutting to macramé. I would, of course, recommended making your own front door wreath and decorations as it so rewarding to do so.

HONEYCOMB PAPER DECORATIONS
Paper décor is set to be one of the biggest trends for 2022. It ticks all the boxes; fun, eco-friendly and easy to make! Choose honeycomb-shaped trees, hearts, baubles in colourful rich emeralds and burgundy shades. It’s been a key trend for all seasons and seems to be even more popular for Christmas holiday décor. FROST AND MINT
Frosted glass ornaments and mint-y colours play perfectly with the winter theme. They look well with traditional pine-y greens or decorating a frosted or flocked Christmas tree.
CANDLES
It’s really all about the candles this year! Beautiful tapered candles in candlesticks are set to be a key part of the 2022 Christmas table scape. It’s a great way to support small businesses by sourcing original designs. I love some of the more of the quirky designs on the market in two-tone colours, twisted shaped and embellished candles to add a pop of colour to Christmas tables.
I hope you enjoyed my Christmas decoration suggestions. If you have an interior project you need advising on or help with styling your home ready for Christmas, please get in touch with Jennifer via the contact details below.
Also, all Christmas products imagery are available to order.

Claverley farm logs
Claverley Farm Logs is a family business based on the outskirts of the village of Claverley.
Brothers Chris and Tim ensure the logs they sell are well seasoned and barn stored ready for you to burn. All of our Barn stored logs are 20% or less moisture and are a mix of oak, ash and Birch.
The Kiln dried logs are less than 18% moisture and are ash. Both types are ideal as it is important to burn dry wood so not to damage your burner or chimney. Our logs are also approved by the Woodsure ‘Ready to Burn’
initiative. This approval is testament that our logs are of the highest quality. We sell them in either Bulk Bags or loose Loads (2.5 bags worth) and deliver them up to a 12mile radius of our farm. The majority of our wood is locally sourced and is from well managed woodlands.
We look forward to seeing new and existing customers throughout this winter ahead. Please do telephone us for more information or go onto our website where you will see the full range of products that we sell which you can also purchase online.

top award at old hall
The new Headteacher at a Midlands school has started the academic year in a celebratory mood announcing two top national awards.
Mrs. Anna Karacan joined Old Hall School in September from her previous role as Deputy Head at Kellet School in Hong Kong, one of the top 100 prep schools in the world.
Pupils were welcomed back by Mrs. Karacan after the summer break with the announcement they had not only picked up a top sports prize but had also been awarded the prestigious Green Flag status for Eco-Schools.
The school clinched the Government-led Platinum Schools Games Award for the third year running which recognises commitment to sport and keeping young people active.
The school’s Eco Committee has also been working hard to secure Old Hall’s Green Flag and Mrs. Karacan said she was delighted to announce they were successful in that goal.
The announcements came as Mrs. Karacan also met with parents and families during match teas, coffee mornings, and more formal year group meetings at the start of term.
“I have been given a wonderfully warm welcome at Old Hall and really pleased that the first few weeks of term offered a number of opportunities to meet with parents while I was also getting to know their children better,” added Mrs. Karacan, who is also on the playground each morning as parents arrive to drop off their children.
“There is a real buzz of excitement in the school and it was wonderful to start the term celebrating news of awards and other successes won through hard work and determination.”
Mrs. Karacan said she was also encouraged by a really positive reaction to plans she outlined for the school including a stronger framework to offer more opportunities for higher academic achievement and pathways to excellence in a variety of areas including the arts and sports.
She also plans to work closely with colleagues at Wrekin College, also part of the same Educational Trust, to maximise expertise and state-of-the-art facilities on the Wellington Campus. They include a swimming pool, specialist Music and Business Schools, tennis courts, and two Astro Turfs. Building work also gets underway this year on a new Design and Technology School.
“I want to work as a community when it comes to any developments at Old Hall and with that in mind, I have sent a comprehensive survey out to our families to give their feedback on what works for them at Old Hall and what they would like to see change. I am really encouraged that parents are keen to take part in this process. A school where staff, parents, and our pupils are engaged and committed to looking at where things work and where they can be improved help to create a community where children are happy and want to do well while in the best possible environment for them to reach their potential.”

wgs pathway to success
Wolverhampton Grammar School students have been celebrating the strongest A Level exam results at the School for over 10 years, with 48% of all grades awarded A*/A and 72% A*- B. 64% of Cambridge Technical qualifications were at Distinction* and Distinction. The Year 11s also achieved a fantastic 72% of grades at 9-7 (A*/A equivalent) at GCSE, nearly 20 percentage points higher than the same figure in 2019.
From Art to Languages, Business to Psychology, Chemistry to Sport, students can study from a choice of 20 A Levels and 2 Cambridge Technicals. Many students also take an Extended Project Qualification. A huge advantage of choosing WGS Sixth Form is the flexibility in subject choice with no option blocks curtailing combinations. Staff really do go the extra mile to make students’ preferred subject options work for them.
Recognising that private education is a considerable investment, Wolverhampton Grammar School offers value for money with increased teaching hours per subject in the Lower and Upper Sixth (Years 12-13) to enable students to gain deeper subject knowledge. Enviable staff to student ratios mean that class sizes are no more than 15 and teachers really get to know each individual well. Dedicated careers staff and expertise in higher education ensures that students secure the right pathway for them - be that university entrance, an apprenticeship, taking a gap year or going into employment. Included in the school fees is the widest offering of extra-curricular clubs, societies and overseas educational visits of any independent school in the area.
For those in search of fee assistance a generous bursary scheme offers the opportunity of a WGS education to deserving recipients from all backgrounds. As well as recognising academic excellence, these include a Sixth Form Sports scholarship awarded to a student who can demonstrate a strong sporting ability such as county, regional or national representation in their chosen sport. In addition to means-tested awards, further opportunity exists for students demonstrating musical scholarship.
Students interested in entering the Sixth Form are invited to the Wolverhampton Grammar School Sixth Form Subject Options Evening on Thursday 17th November and those registering for Year 7 should register for the Year 7 Entrance Test on Saturday 14th January. Following the expansion of its Junior School, children can now join Wolverhampton Grammar School from the age of 4 years and continue right through to Sixth Form. The next Junior School Open Day will be held on Saturday 28th January 2023. Contact Admissions on Tel: 01902 422939 to register your interest.

what's on
Wombourne Choral Society’s Christmas Concert on Saturday 10th December 2022 in Beckminster Methodist Church, Wolverhampton will have a very specific Baroque French feel to it, transporting the audience back to a 17th century Christmas celebration with Charpentier, one of France’s most popular composers.
The main attraction will be the Baroque period instrument ensemble joining the choir in performances of Charpentier’s ‘Messe de Minuit’, ‘Noels pour les instruments’ and several traditional French carols. This combination will make this concert performance particularly rare and one not to be missed.
The instrument ensemble will include the Theorbo, which is a bass continuo lute-like instrument, together with baroque violins and flutes and an historically informed performance.
Tickets for the concert are £15 each with children under 16 free. These are available from choir members, online at the website www.wombournechoralsociety.org.uk , phoning 01902 744447 or at the door on the night.

local choir to perform a french christmas concert not to be missed… brewood singers perform a christmas concert in pattingham
As part of the 3-day Christmas Tree Festival to be held in St Chad’s Church, Pattingham in December 2022, Brewood Singers will be performing a special Christmas Concert
As a new venture, the Choir is starting a Youth Choir and is approaching local schools and colleges to gather aspiring singers, probably in the age range 13 to 18/21 years old. This will be fun and musically educational with opportunities for concert performances for the young singers on their own, or jointly with the Senior Choir. Further information can be obtained from our Chairman, Henry Ibberson (07775 680705 – ibberson@uwclub.net).
Wombourne & District Choral Society is a well-established, mixed choir of some 60 singers, drawn from the local area and has a varied repertoire, mainly full classical works, often performed with soloists and an orchestra. New singers are always welcome to the choir. Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings, 7.30 to 9.30pm during term time at Springdale Methodist Church, Warstones Road, Penn, Wolverhampton WV4 4LF. The play made its world premiere at the Library Theatre, Scarborough on 26th June 1972 and its London début at the Criterion Theatre on 4th July 1973, transferring to the Vaudeville Theatre in September 1974, completing a run of 973 performances. Its official New York Broadway début was at the Music Box Theatre in October 1974. It ran for 591 performances in its first run on Broadway up to March 1976.
In November, Pattingham Drama will be performing ‘Absurd Person Singular’, a play written in 1972 by Alan Ayckbourn which still looks fresh 50 years on, with Ayckbourn’s keen sense of mischief to the fore.
Divided into three acts, it documents the changing fortunes of three married couples. Each act takes place at a Christmas celebration in the kitchen of one of the couple’s homes on successive Christmas Eves. The amateur production takes place in Pattingham Village Hall starting
The BBC produced a television drama, adapted from the play, first broadcast on 1st January 1985. It was directed by Michael Simpson and starred John Baddeley, Cheryl Campbell, Michael Gambon, Nicky Henson, Lesley Joseph, Maureen Lipman, Geoffrey Palmer and Prunella Scales.
The tickets cost just £10 each and are available by calling 01902 700748 or from the box office at boxoffice@ pattinghamdramagroup.co.uk.

nick & royston
Spending special moments with old friends and new friends has been a priority for Nick & Royston this year.
With weddings and parties having been postponed over the last few years, this year has seen many important occasions that Nick & Royston have relished the celebrations.
KAREN`S 60TH BIRTHDAY PARTY
After meeting professional model Karen at a mutual friend’s party, they completely hit it off! Nick & Royston were delighted to share Kazza’s special birthday at The Bracebridge at Sutton Park. The restaurant is situated in the heart of Sutton Park and overlooks the very beautiful Bracebridge pool. The outdoor terrace was the perfect setting for a champagne reception, followed by a delicious dinner in the art deco restaurant. The evening was full of glamorous guests, great music and dancing late under the stars.
SAILING THE GREEK ISLANDS
Wherever they go, Nick & Royston attract new friends! Their down-to-earth sense of humour and fun-loving personalities are like bees to the honey pot, and they love nothing more than meeting new and interesting people.
During their last trip to Marbella, by chance they met up with friends from Jersey. The friends were holidaying over the summer months on a yacht sailing around the Greek Islands and invited them to join them for a week. Picking up the super yacht in Corfu, the group visited Aristotle Onassis’ private island, Skorpios, then on to Zante and then finally Sicily. It was an amazing experience, having never visited the Greek islands before, enjoying life on the seas and zipping about on a jet ski. It was a life they could get used to!

DARBY WARD’S WEDDING
After being friends with Dawn and Ashley Ward for many years, they have watched Darby grow up, so it was a special day seeing her marry fiancé Michael Corrado Jackson. Nick & Royston joined close family and friends a few days before the wedding to start the celebrations that were held at the luxurious Grand Hotel du Cap-Ferrat. This timeless, elegant and iconic venue on the Cote D`Azur, was a regular haunt for Sir Winston Churchill and Elizabeth Taylor and was the perfect setting for classic French romance.
The wedding was a magical affair, with seven bridesmaids, an abundance of white roses and the stunning Mediterranean as the backdrop for the ceremony. The day was full of love and happiness for this gorgeous couple and the evening was lit up with fireworks and an amazing party.
ADVENTURES IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE
After enjoying the wedding, Nick & Royston decided to extend their vacation with friends Wes & Pete, to enjoy all the delights of the French Riviera. Staying at the Hotel Byblos St Tropez, there was nowhere more glamorous, chic and full of beautiful people. St Tropez offers stunning beaches, fabulous food and every designer shop that you can imagine, even Royston couldn’t get bored! The next spot was Cannes, pre drinks at The Carlton Beach and then lunch at La Colombro D`Or. As a special surprise, close friends Jo & Malcolm Bridgwood and Julie & Roy Millard joined them at Le Club 55 to celebrate Malcolm’s 60th Birthday. There was no stopping this lot, the evenings were as full as the days; from Royston nearly getting arrested at the infamous restaurant Opera to partying the night away! There is no slowing down for these two.
A big Thank You to all their friends for their generosity, fun and memories that they will never forget.

american road trip!
America really does have something to offer for everyone, whether you want to enjoy a city break in New York, the coastline of California or the theme parks in Florida, here are some of my top picks.
California The Golden State
America’s Golden State of California can offer you amazing culture in San Francisco, mouth-watering cuisine in Santa Barbara, wine tasting in Napa or Sonoma, beautiful coastline along the Big Sur, or shopping galore in Los Angeles. Explore the vibrant golden beaches of Santa Monica and Laguna Beach, get close to nature in the forests of giant redwoods and sequoias or relax by hot springs in desert resorts.
In California you can experience it all with either a multicentre holiday with flights between each destination, or see it all in a classic American car and road trip across the state.
Katie Brook, Personal Travel Consultant
Florida The Sunshine State
Florida gets its name for its all-year-round sunshine, making it a destination for any time of the year. With its picture blue skies, warm waters and sun-soaked, white sandy beaches, what is there not to love?
But Florida is more than just sunshine, whether you want to get close to wildlife in its natural habitat, travel along the Everglades in an airboat, meet your favourite Characters at Disney World or enjoy white knuckle rides at Universal, Florida has a lot to offer.
If you want to experience it all, then a multi-centre holiday in Florida can allow you to experience the excitement of Disney, the beaches of the Key West and the vibrancy of Miami.

New York State ‘The Big Apple’
A lot of people travel to New York State simply to visit the Big Apple, which certainly won’t disappoint, however, there is a lot more to this part of America than just the hustle, bustle and bright lights of its famous city.
Explore further afield and you’ll find the tranquil vineyards of Finger Lakes, spectacular thundering Niagara Falls, the sparkling beaches of Long Island or the moody peaks of the Adirondack Mountains.
If you do just visit the city that never sleeps, you will experience an abundance of unique and exciting activities. From its famous landmarks such as the Empire State building and Times Square, to its individual and distinctive neighbourhoods with their array of restaurants, to its famous art galleries or shows on Broadway, New York City never fails to impress.
Nevada The Silver State
The silver State of Nevada is a state of contrasts. From the neon lights, glitzy casinos and glamorous clubs of Las Vegas, to the captivating Western towns and mesmerising parks of Northern Nevada, the diversity of the state is jaw dropping.
If you are simply taking a trip to its famous Sin City, Las Vegas, with its neon lights, nightlife, crazy sights, crazy people and wild gambling, you won’t be disappointed. However, travel away from the city and you will find snow-capped mountains, vast meadows, sprawling valleys and deep canyons. From the tranquillity of Lake Tahoe and Lake Mead, with its monumental Hoover Dam, to a journey along the Loneliest Road – part of the old Pony Express Trail, a visit to its well-known ghost towns or a trip to Death Valley National Park, there is lots to explore in this amazing State.
The rest of America
The vastness of this amazing country means I’m not able to cover all the other fantastic places there are to visit in this article, however, if you are looking to put together your own American Road Trip, get in touch and find out how I can help put together the perfect itinerary for you.

here at the flower shop, we are already thinking about christmas!
we cannot wait for the festive season
YES, I’M ALREADY PLANNING MY CHRISTMAS FLOWERS!
My fairy lights are going up mid-November, then start of December sees the flowers arrive. Firstly, my door wreath! What can I say? As a florist they are amazing. Anyone who has ever been on a wreathmaking class that I hold, will realise how creative we can be. The amount of beautiful foliage we can include is endless. I always start with a mossed wreath frame then add masses of blue spruce. Not only does it smell amazing just like a real Christmas tree smells, but the blue colour gives a great base to work from. I then add holly and eucalyptus together with red berries, orange slices, cones, touches of thistles and cinnamon slices. At this stage I would be thinking mmmm… what colour spray to use. I think I’m opting for silver this year with a touch of silver glitter. You can add fresh flowers to your door wreath but personally I enjoy foliage. I’m treating myself to another wreath inside my home. With this one I am going to create it to complement the door wreath but add quirky novelties and baubles. Yes, you’ve guessed it... I’ll be adding fairy lights! You can buy great battery fairy lights on fine wire so the wire looks almost invisible. I’ll mist it gently every few days and it will stay great throughout December.

A SPECIAL WOW FOR THE DAY!
I’m still a big kid at heart and I will decorate the fireplace ready for when Santa arrives on Christmas Eve. I aim for this display to be made 1 week before Christmas so I get the excitement during the run up, but looks great for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Stockings hang either side of my fireplace display. Again, there’ll be masses of blue spruce, bundles of holly and cones but in this display, I’ll add small touches with fresh flowers such as roses, gerberas, skimmia, eustoma and long lasting seasonal flowers. Yes…. fairy lights will be included!
THE ALL-IMPORTANT CHRISTMAS TABLE CENTREPIECE
I LOVE dressing the table for Christmas dinner. In my head I must think I’m running a famous restaurant! I try to fold the napkins in a fancy shape and add clusters of winter foliage with small cones on each place setting. My Christmas mats are all laid and the cutlery is staged ready for the banquet, and my table cloth screams Christmas! My table always has a special floral arrangement. The shape this year will be a long display as I have a rectangle table. If I was using a round table then an all-round display would be best. The selection will complement the fireplace display but instead of fairy lights I’ll be adding real cream candles. That’s it… the table is READY!

“Beautifulflowers,always”
As we get closer to Christmas I have started looking at party outfits and fabulous accessories. Hopefully this year, we can enjoy a normal party season!
I didn’t have to look very far for beautiful jewellery. Elie Top has created a beautiful collection for Zara and as gold jewellery is back on trend, it’s a perfect treat or gift for a stylish friend. Fabulous eye-popping colour is still key so don’t be a shrinking violet. Make sure you buy statement pieces to last all season!
SPARKLE & SHINE
This year I discovered Rixo on Marylebone High St. It’s a gorgeous vintage-styled dress shop. I literally had to put my hands in my pockets and haven’t stopped lusting after a Rixo dress! I’ve added sassy ankle boots from Michael Kors which will be a staple in your party wardrobe for years.
Reiss is a brand I always admire with their luxe fabrics, sophisticated colours and always very stylish. I love this metallic tunic; add beautiful accessories and you are party ready.

PARTY ON
have chosen four very different party dresses; all beautiful colours hopefully appealing to everyone. Jaeger is now on M&S’s website. The fuchsia dress with cut-out detail is a classic look - just add metallic accessories. The dress by Gemy Maalouf popped up on my Instagram & as it’s so beautiful I wanted to share it with you. I love the fringe dress from Anthroplolgie and perfect for dancing in velvet shoes. Recently I have been helping a lovely lady who reads my fashion edit to choose her Mother of the Bride outfit. Choosing statement pieces for your wardrobe is very satisfying. Massimo Dutti have designed a Limited Edition range which is so eye-popping & stylish. It took me an age to decide what to share with you. Make sure you visit the website & take a look. I’ve chosen matching accessories from Jasper Conran, Zara & Aspinal of London. Loafers are the flat shoe for this season & a coloured bag is an easy way to add a pop of colour.

RED
Block colour is one of my favourite trends & this season you can’t go wrong with red. The red twill coat from M&S is fabulous. I recently tried it on in our local store & it’s a great shape. Look at M&S for sports luxe pieces too. Me and Em are one of my favourite brands. They layer outfits really well & create interesting separates in fabulous colours. Trainers are still key - add these chunky sneakers from Russell & Bromley.

DEBORAH MITCHELL
“I have dedicated my life to creating revolutionary skincare treatments which have transformed the way my clients both look and feel. And now, I’m delighted to offer professional advanced fillers in addition to the specialist treatments already available at my Shifnal-based salon, Heaven Medi-Spa and at Harvey Nicols at the Mailbox in Birmingham”.
“People are increasingly worried about the shape of their facial features and fillers are a massively effective tool in making a real difference. Although I am primarily a holistic therapist I want to bring my clients all treatments that will make them look and feel their best.”
And, Deborah is fully qualified to perform the treatment after achieving the highest possible accreditation from the UK’s leading training school:
“I’m thrilled to be able to offer fillers which create a really natural and flattering look no matter where they are being injected and my clients have been amazed by how just a small amount of filler can enhance their entire face.”
Deborah also uses fillers to perform treatments which offer clients a real alternative to surgery:
“Using fillers I’m able to offer treatments like ‘Russian Lips’ and ‘Twinkle Nose’ as well as non-surgical facelifts. I can also use the fillersto change features that
clients are unhappy with, like a hook nose, as well as being able to use fat removal injections to reduce unwanted fat in the cheeks and jaw line.”
Ironically, Deborah first trained in collagen injections at the age of 22 years old, but refused to carry out the treatment once she learned that they were created using un-natural ingredients.

“Collagen is found in abundance in our skin when we are young, but as we get older the amount diminishes – in fact, by the time we’re 50 we’ve already lost up to a third, and this leads to a dry complexion and signs of ageing,” explains Deborah. “Thankfully, my new Collagen Drops help boost that lost collagen… and then some. I’ve been working on these new supplements for a number of years now and because I am using high levels of collagen the results so far have been just amazing.”

is it time to treat your ears to an mot?
The warm days of summer may be a distant memory as we head into winter and the festive period, but there’s no better time to give your ears a Winter MOT.
Why miss out the sound of carol singers, the laughter shared with the family on Christmas Day or just the simple crackle of logs on the fire. At Hear in Hagley, Hear in Wombourne and Hear in Rubery we are passionate and dedicated to bringing every day, simple sounds back to life.
Quite often it’s the clarity that we lose first and this can start in our 50’s. However, it takes many years for hearing loss to develop. We may start to accuse people of mumbling or blame the quality of some tv programs when in fact its our own ears that the problem. If things are ‘loud enough but not clear’ it might be time for a check of your hearing.
We offer FREE hearing assessments so if you know someone that may not be hearing so well perhaps it’s time for a visit to your local ‘Hear in’ clinic.
It might just be ear wax and the great news is that this is easily fixed. If it’s a hearing solution you need, we can advise you on the very latest technology. With interest free finance you can even spread the cost and our 60day money back guarantee allows plenty of time to try your hearing aids out in the situations you’ve been missing out on so there’s nothing to lose
We are a family run independent hearing care business and are proud to be able to offer the very latest in hearing aid technology, the best and most professional

We all love to be pampered, whether it’s for a special occasion or just a feel good treat.
It’s easy to forget about your feet as the winter months approach, hidden away in socks and boots. Not only do your feet bear the brunt of all that Christmas shopping, it’s not long till you’ll be showing them off in those new sparkly sandals at the Christmas parties. For those perfect winter toes, preparation is the key and here are some tips to prepare your feet to party.
One of the most popular forms of pampering is a pedicure. There’s no better feeling than having your feet look and feel good and here at Foot Therapy, that’s our aim.
Aside from the 30 minute Chiropody, we also provide a service called the Steri-Pedi (short for sterile pedicure) which gives all the joy of a pedicure with a few added extras.
1. Keep heels for special occasions. Save backless highheeled shoes for evening glamour, they force your toes to claw as you walk, straining muscles if worn over a long period.
5. Use a foot file once a week to help combat any hard skin. Remove old nail varnish prior to the party season to help rehydrate your nails.

separating finances in divorce –what are you entitled to?
Separating finances when going through divorce can be tricky. Common questions will usually be ‘What am I entitled to?’ ‘Can I stay in my home?’ ‘Will my pension be affected?’. These can be difficult questions to answer and will depend on your individual circumstances. The starting point for a division of assets is usually a 50/50 split. This can include assets in both joint names or a parties sole name. A number of factors will need to be considered and these include needs, age, length of the marriage and any dependants.
These are just some of the factors to be considered, and circumstances can sometimes result in a departure from equality.
For example if the marriage is short in length pre-marital assets may not be included when dividing the assets. If one spouse lives with dependants (children of the family) their housing and income needs may be greater and thus
they may need a greater share of the assets to meet their reasonable needs on divorce.
To conclude when dealing with finances on divorce, the Court have powers to distribute assets held in both names, including pensions or the sale of a property. If you are currently separating from a partner or going through a divorce and would like to explore your options and receive advice and dedicated client care regarding the division of your assets please do not hesitate to contact Paige Bowyer or a member of our friendly and professional team regarding your circumstances, please call 01902 313311 or visit www.thornessolicitors.co.uk for more information.

living through the “i” of the storm
High Inflation, rising interest rate and economic instability. From a financial and investor perspective, it is important for us all to understand what is going on and how to deal with it from an emotional perspective. It would be very easy to react and possibly make emotional decisions about our pensions and investments right now.
It has been impossible to escape the negative news over the last few months as both the UK and the global economy continues to wrestle with the hang-over from Covid and more latterly rising inflation and interest rates to levels that have not been seen for a long time.
The consequence of this is that VERY few investment and pension funds are reporting any positive returns over the last 12 months. EVERYONE is suffering as it is virtually impossible to escape the downturn.
A few of my clients have asked me if they should move to cash or even invest in completely different assets. Since 1929, the date of one of the most memorable stock market declines in history, there have been 26 bear market periods. On 26 occasions, the bear market was followed by a bull run and markets performed very strongly afterwards. Bear runs, compared to bull runs, have always been a very short period relative to bull runs.
There is no reason to think that this time will be any different.
Most investors start their investment journey when markets are rising. Few investors have the confidence to invest when markets are falling. Although in reality, ‘long term’ investors should be investing when markets are in decline. Few are brave enough to do this though.
The temptation for both experienced and new investors is to jump off the investment train when it’s heading in the wrong direction. Or think that they need to fundamentally change their investments to something new, because their investments are not working right now.
But here is the problem with making drastic changes right now.
No. 1 – It is ‘TIME’ in the market not ‘TIMING’ the market. That means that you have let time do the work. Jumping in and out of the market is a game of luck as no one knows exactly what will happen and when. You just cannot get this right on a consistent basis, if at all.
No. 2 – If you do decide to pull out of your investments now, that’s one decision. However, there are 2 problems to take into consideration. Firstly, where to put your money and secondly on what basis do you decide to re-invest and into what. Deciding when to re-invest can be a
64 finance
paralyzing decision and for many investors, they never come back to investing.
No 3 – Moving to cash right now could be the worst of all decisions especially if you do not need the money in the near term and you are a longterm investor. Why? Inflation is the hidden ‘killer’ of the value of money. Money loses purchasing power over time, and at 10% this is happening very quickly. At least even if your investments are losing value now, when the markets start to rise again, your investments will increase in value. Moving to cash will permanently destroy the value of money. It’s as simple as that.
At times like these, some investors think that we will never get out of this MESS and believe that investing is impossible, and you cannot make money. All I can say, is that we have been here before and we have come out the other side. This time will be no different. So, it’s important not to PANIC or at the least try not to, although I appreciate that it is not always easy.
If you are struggling or concerned, here’s my advice of how to deal with the emotional turmoil.
1. Markets go up all the time – Just not every day.
2. Every Bear market is followed by a Bull run.
3. Invest with a long-term mind set – If you do
not need the money today, try not to worry.
4. Having secure regular income is more important than the value of your investments.
5. If your income is secure and you don’t need the money now, is the current value that important.
6. Try to understand how much you can afford the values to fall by before it starts to have an impact on you financially. For example, if your income was dependent upon your investments, could a fall jeopardise your future income.
7. Make sure you invest into a diversified portfolio and don’t hold all your eggs in one basket.
8. Finally, in the absence of a logical reason to change course, don’t make any changes.

estate planning
Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death.
What is an ‘estate’
Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions.
Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.
What is a Will?
A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.
Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do.
Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:
- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.
- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.
- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.
- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly.
Benefits of a Will
These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will: You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.
Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.
Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.
Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children.
Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.
Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms - A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.
When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.
Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.
Inheritance tax
It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.
The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries.
How much does a Will cost?
This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

seasonal dangers and delights for pets
As the evenings get darker and the days get colder many of us look forward to Christmas and all the beautiful decorations and yummy festive treats. Our pets love to join in the fun too, but there are hidden dangers that you may not be aware of.
Seasonal foliage such as Mistletoe, Poinsettia and Ivy are all toxic to dogs, cats and other pets such as rabbits. Holly in particular can cause severe gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs and Lilies can be fatal to cats, even if just a small amount is ingested it can cause severe kidney failure, so ensure Lilies are well out of reach as pets may also be tempted to drink water from the vase. If you have a pet bird keep a close eye on them when they are flying about near your decorations, Ivy and Mistletoe can be deadly to pet birds and many other decorative plants such as Poinsettia can be toxic too. Out and about, check cars before you start them as cats like to climb inside a car engine to keep warm. If you have a cat you may like to pop a litter tray down for them, they may prefer to stay indoors on particularly cold days. If you have more than one cat, put more than one litter tray down. Antifreeze is poisonous to dogs and cats, they will be tempted to lick it as it’s so sweet, just a tiny bit can kill so it needs to be kept well out of reach and take care not to spill any.
It’s great to share the tasty treats with our furry friends but take care that you know what’s in those treats. Chocolate is toxic for dogs and Christmas pudding
contains sultanas, raisins and currants which are toxic too, so mince pies and Christmas pud are off the menu for our precious pooches. You could always try making a dog friendly mince pie with real meat and carrots, why not add some sweet potato too and come up with a fun festive name for them. There are loads of homemade treat ideas online for cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies, parrots and other species of pets too, why not take a look and make them some special seasonal delights of their own.
Wildlife will start to struggle more as the winter months approach, why not help by putting some food out for them. As well as wild bird seed and nuts from the pet shop, you could pop out some kitchen scraps such as cooked peas, cooked unsalted bacon and beef fat, apples and pears and cooked eggs. Ensure you chop the scraps up in to small pieces or crush them and leave fresh water out for the birds too. Birds puff out their feathers to stay warm so please don’t mistake this for a fat bird, it could well be the complete opposite and they may really need those yummy scraps.
Have a fabulous festive season and keep each other safe and snuggly!!!
Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

pets & garden
as the year ends...
Well, we’ve made it to the end of another year! One that’s had many lows as well as a few highs. One of the constants about any year is the beauty and serenity that can come from having a garden and being in the fresh air. Life may throw all sorts at us, as it has done over the last two years, but there’s always the garden and outdoor space to ease a troubled mind. It may be coming towards the end of the year, but there’s always something that can still be done in the garden.
While it’s mild and there’s no frost in the ground plant bare root hedging and fruit trees. For some winter colour in the garden use shrubs such as Viburnum tinus, Skimmias, Callicarpa or Leucothoe. There is a wide choice of smaller shrubs available which can be planted into baskets and pots for colour during the winter and then transferred into the garden in the spring when you replant for summer.
Continue planting pansies, wallflowers and winter bedding, the sooner it’s done now the better. If we do get a sharp frost winter pansy flowers will droop down but once they thaw out during the day, they pop back up giving colour even on a cold day. Winter pansies and violas much prefer the colder days to the mild damp ones, which can cause leaf spot problems on the leaves. November is the ideal month for planting tulip bulbs.
One of the best Christmas house plants is the Poinsettia. It gives instant colour in a room. Available from late November onwards, they like good light during the day and a warm room, never in a draught. Only water when the soil is dry and never stand in water for longer than 10 minutes. Anthuriums or Flamingo flowers are becoming more popular and the flowers will last for months.
In a cooler room the brightly coloured cyclamen is ideal. They need good light at all times. Only water just as the foliage begins to wilt and make sure that any excess water is removed from saucers after 15 minutes. Christmas cacti have beautiful shrimp like red, pink, white or lavender flowers. Azaleas will flourish in either a warm or cool room and are very easy to keep, requiring plenty of water. Cacti and succulents are very popular again this year and are ideal presents for encouraging the younger generation into gardening.
Planted Arrangements in baskets make an ideal present, both for the keen garden or for someone
who just likes plants, these can be gift wrapped in cellophane and topped with a ribbon, as can any other plant we sell. For a living gift consider buying a shrub for the garden or a planted-up tub or hanging basket specifically designed for winter colour.
From the end of November, freshly cut Christmas trees will be available in centres. When you get your tree home, put it in a stand or pot that can be kept moist, as warm temperatures and dry air inside the home make the tree absorb water very rapidly. Keep away from hot radiators, open fires and TV sets. This also applies to rooted trees, especially if you’re planning on planting it in the garden after Christmas.
We would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you all again in the spring.

toyota aygo x
The market place seems to be awash with midsize SUV’s and often overlooked is what used to be categorised as the Super Mini, now Toyota with the Aygo X, have upgraded and up-specified their little car, and it is going to be well worth having a second glance at this so called Super Mini. Writes Bob Hickman.
The styling helps to make it stand out from a plethora of other diminutive cars, it has body cladding, you can have up to 18” alloy wheels and the contrasting colour and the wheel trims really do make a stand out vehicle. Whilst the Aygo is on the small size externally, the interior is not actually too bad. It was a 5-door option and the rear 2 seats are not really designed to stretch to 6footers like myself, you could manage at a push as long as the driver and front passenger are courteous with how much room they would like. Headroom was particularly limited and you will find that your head would be touching the roof. The boot is never going to be a major feature on a little car like this and at 231 litres it was sufficient but this is not a vehicle to ride with 4 people and all their luggage for a weekend or long break.
The Aygo has just one particular engine derivative, a 3-cylinder, 1-litre producing 72bhp, my particular test car drove through an automatic gearbox and while some commentators have complained about it, I found it a perfectly adequate companion. Certainly, at times it sounded noisy and laborious but it did what it was supposed to do.
Performance is not one of its strong points and I think perhaps 90bhp may have been needed. The 0-60 speed is marginally over 14 seconds, and top speed is in the region of 95-98mph. The economy as you would expect was good, and on occasions the computer told me that I was doing over 65mpg, the average for the week was 55mpg. The CO emissions are 109g/km.
There is little doubt that the Aygo is primarily a city or town car, in and around town you appreciate its tiny, diminutive footprint especially when trying to park. The power steering for a car of
this size, was perfectly adequate and on multi-storey car parks where lots of manoeuvring is required it was an absolute joy.
It is not really comfortable on motorways or dual carriageways, obviously it was capable of doing it, but you don’t buy an Aygo when you are constantly doing 200+ miles on motorway or dual carriageway journeys.
I was disappointed that the infotainment system did not have a satellite navigation system incorporated, the top specs do have that feature, but it is possible to plug in and avail yourself of Apple Play or Android Auto and sometimes the Apple Play navigation is better than some of the in-built systems. As standard the Aygo gets a reasonable sized touchscreen and this incorporates the Toyota infotainment software, it was clear, easy to understand and operate whilst on the move. USB ports are there to enable you to connect your phones to get the advantage of the extra features.
The small binnacle in front of the driver contained the normal information you want and there is a plethora of buttons and switches on the steering wheel. The cruise control and the infotainment setting were also contained within the wheel as was a trip computer and the important miles to the gallon display and the amount of fuel left on your journey.
Aygo’s are competitively priced and they range from £15405 to marginally over £21350. The Aygo Edge x as tested was £18205. All Toyota’s come with an extensive warranty of 3 years.

lexus nx 350h
Lexus have introduced another derivative in to the SUV family, the 2nd generation of the NX a hybrid in keeping with the current philosophy of electric and going green where we can, writes Bob Hickman.
The NX certainly is a stand out car, it is not what I would usually expect of Lexus. If you look at the picture it has a huge stance and eludes presence the front is almost aggressive in style.
It is a big car, on a recent sojourn and leaving the vehicle at a park and ride, it was a struggle to actually fit it in to one of the bays and I was a bit concerned if an overzealous park attendant might penalise me for being a couple inches over the white line.
It has a sporty look with a sloping coupe roof style, but there is quite an amount of headroom for all passengers, certainly the rear of the vehicle swallows 3 adults with decent legroom as well. Plenty of storage places have been incorporated. The boot capacity is certainly in keeping with the external size and will swallow all the luggage 5 adults could wish to carry.
Inside the vehicle it is a delight, wherever you look the materials are of a quality and somewhat tactile in their appearance. The new version is certainly packed with new technology which will take some time to get used to. The Infotainment system is excellent, the touchscreen is a big vast improvement on to this model.
There is little doubt this is well-made, stylish and pleasant companion.
There are options to be made, the NX 350h which was the test vehicle and was the self-charging hybrid derivative, which has the benefit of a 4-cylinder 2487cc petrol engine allied to extra assistance from an electric motor. I like the concept that you do not have to plug in the vehicle to re-charge the battery, the engine does it for me and that is a bonus. You can run on EV mode only, but not for a great huge distance, this is more of an assistance to the petrol engine.
The NX 350h is a large vehicle with a length of 4660mms overall width of 1865mms, and weighing in at 1870kg it still
had power in abundance. The 0-60 could be achieved in 7.7 seconds and a 124mph top speed would be permissible if it is allowed. The fuel consumption is quoted as being between 44 and 47 mpg and during my time with the vehicle I achieved 46mpg, which is virtually spot on what is suggested. CO emissions are 133 -146g/km.
The vehicle warranty is an interesting one, Lexus Relax covers the vehicles up to 10 years or up to 100,000 miles but this is available only to customers whose vehicles are serviced at a Lexus centre where t’s and c’s apply. 3 years paintwork and 12-year anti-corrosion and a 3-year Roadside Assistance. Service is required annually or at 10,000 miles.
Lexus is a brand that has established itself in the premium car sector the NX 350h is in real direct competition with BMW X3 or the Audi Q5 and I think out of those 3 the Lexus, if you want something slightly different with a striking appearance then the Lexus possibly may tick the box.
NX 350h with the Premium Plus pack has an on the road price of £50,260.
