home
Since starting my interior design company Jennifer Suzanne Interiors, I have explored many panelling solutions for clients’ homes.
One of my first design projects was a period-style property renovation with one of the rooms previously used as an unloved dining room; I re-designed the space into a relaxing cool home bar and entertaining space.
The main feature of the bar was panelled walls. I designed a replica mould of the existing alcove panelling by creating a template moulding of the original panelling, in the alcove then had the moulding cut to fit that shape. I applied the bead moulding onto the straight edge of the MDF panels to create a beautiful shadow gap that added in depth and character to the design.
I love that panelling can create a distinctive style in your home. If you’re after a rustic country house look or want to give your space a modern feel, wall panelling, cladding and moulding are all great ways to lift a space and a fantastic way to add character, style, and texture to the walls.
Adding wall panelling is also a practical choice, as it can add protection to walls purposely concealing unattractive and uneven surfaces whilst also helping to avoid general wear and tear from family life (or cover up signs of previous accidents).
Plus it can add a level of insulation too. It also adds extra durability to walls in high-traffic areas such as staircases and hallways.
Panelling works in pretty much any room; from bedrooms to bathrooms, living rooms to kitchens. There are various styles of wall panels and I find choosing the perfect choice rejuvenates your well-worn interior walls or adds in character to a new build. Here are my top wall panelling styles, tried and tested at Jennifer Suzanne Interiors.
WOODEN SLAT PANELS
A wood slat wall is made of slim, vertical strips of wood placed on an acoustic felt backing, usually in black or grey felt.
They run from floor to ceiling. They’re attached to the wall with nails. The slats range from ½-inch wide to 2-inches wide, depending on the look you’re going for. Also available in white wash, natural oak, walnut, grey, black and blue oxide. They are easy to install yourself, instantly enhancing your bedroom, living room, or office into a refined, modern space.

SHAKER STYLE PANELS
Shaker style is a popular style of panelling comprising plain straight lines and just a simple frame, especially in keeping with the Arts & Crafts style of homes. Shaker wall panels will be made from MDF rails and can be configured in any design, height and width. Simple lines suitable for any room.

DECORATIVE WALL MOULDING PANELS
Using wall mouldings is an excellent way to create stunning designs that can add character to any interior. Whether it’s a Victorian mansion, Edwardian property or a modern build, decorative moulding panelling can enhance the ambiance of any interior.
There are plenty of options to suit every property type; from the design of a replica of an existing panel or finely intricate and sculpted design. For more ideas of moulding panels, please contact Jennifer at Jennifer Suzanne Interiors.

LUXURY MAKEOVER
VERTICAL PANELS
Vertical panelling is one of the easiest ways to heighten your walls and create openness in a smaller space. It’s a detail that will also create dimension and visual interest to your walls. Designed as flat moulding that fit together to create vertical Wainscoting, it’s a great look for hallways, bedrooms and bathrooms as it can seem almost nautical in style. It can be painted in any colour or have wooden vertical panels for a rustic look.

LINEAR FLUTED PANELS
Fluted wood can be natural, composite or synthetic, but its key feature is its “fluting” or the concave carving of the wood. This beautiful wall panel design works seamlessly into both traditional settings and more contemporary interior styles. The repetitive scalloped wall panel detailing is reminiscent of traditional style v groove Wainscoting but has modern look proportions and design. This versatile wall panel is the ideal choice for half-height wall panelling and for panelling a wall from floor to ceiling. The design looks great used in bathrooms, bedrooms and hallway panelling.
CEILING PANELS
Ceiling panels can add an architectural, traditional element to a space, as well as making a room feel more cosy and intimate through the layering of materials. Choose panel materials that are suitable for the ceiling due to the weight and size, using options such as MDF, foam and vinyl that are lightweight materials to add to your ceiling space.
Coffered ceiling panel is a sunken panel and one that can add depth and drama to a space. Wooden panels on your ceiling add texture and depth using natural materials to add warmth and rustic charm to your ceilings. Coordinate your wall panels with your ceiling panels, to create a bold and cohesive look.

As we approach autumn there’s a lovely range of herbaceous perennials still giving colour in the garden. Heuchera have lovely coloured foliage all year round from lime green, through copper and bronze and the lovely purple shades. Another good one is Echinacea with their brightly coloured flowers and prominent centres.
In the veg patch, start to harvest onions and potatoes now – lift up onions and allow to dry out where they’ve been growing if the weather is fine, before storing. Potatoes should be stored in a cool but frost-free environment.
Lawns can be treated with a specific Autumn feed from September onwards – these contain less nitrogen than the spring forms so that you don’t get the lush green growth which can be damaged by early frosts.
Replant cleared borders with winter pansies, violas, sweet williams and wallflowers. Spring flowering bulbs should be available from the August Bank Holiday, most bulbs can be planted as soon as you get them, but tulips can be planted later – through into November if the weather is mild. When planting in tubs put several layers on bulbs in first starting with daffodils then the smaller bulbs and finally plant pansies, violas or wallflowers last.
Buy prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas flowering and plant them in bowls with Bulb Compost by mid-September. Bulb fibre contains charcoal which helps to keep the compost ‘sweet’ whilst the bulbs are in the dark. Give them a drink and put in a cool, dark place, bringing gradually into the light and warmth once the shoots are approx 3cm high.

have an awesome autumn and keep your pets safe
As the days start to shorten and the light nights become a thing of the past, our environment changes and the fallen leaves create a carpet of golden browns for us to admire and our pets to run through and play in.
Fallen leaves bring new hidden dangers for our furry friends, there can often be a lot of debris under leaf litter such as broken glass. Cuts and grazes are quite common in the Autumn and although they are often painful for your pet it won’t always be apparent that they are hurting. Its good practice to check your dogs and cats once they come in from a walk, check their pads and in-between their toes as well as a good once over to make sure that they haven’t got anything stuck in their fur or skin.
Ticks can become active again in the cooler Autumn months and Fleas hide in fallen foliage so can easily be picked up by your cat or dog, keep a regular watch for any unwanted guests that your pet may be hosting.
Kids often like to play with Conkers and you yourself may have even put some in your house to keep spiders away. Conkers and Acorns are actually toxic to dogs so take care if you have them in your home and when you are out and about, especially if you have a puppy because they like to explore the world with their mouth.
Fireworks can be very scary for some pets, loud bangs, flashing lights and other unfamiliar sounds. Fireworks actually create a vibration; humans aren’t aware of this but animals can feel them and it can be terrifying for some. Keep your pets indoors, make them a little den,
a safe and comfortable place to hide. You can also turn the TV up slightly and close blinds and curtains to help take their mind off what’s going on outside. It’s a good idea to walk and feed your pet before it gets dark and if you have a dog that needs to go out in the garden make sure that you stay with them, not only to reassure them but to keep them safe. Make sure you check that the gates are closed as dogs may bolt and if you are opening doors ensure that your pet is securely inside and can’t dart out.
Hedgehogs and other wildlife hide underneath piles of leaves and wood so if you build a bonfire, do so just before its lit to ensure that there are no animals hiding inside. It’s not just wildlife to consider as cats and other pets can sneak in too, if you leave the bonfire unsupervised then check it again before lighting.
There’s lots of fun to be had at this time of year, with Halloween, Bonfire night and other seasonal activities. Why not brighten up your pet’s day too by coming up with some fun indoor games to play with them, get the kids involved too. You could make them some fresh fun nutritional treats, there’s lots of ideas on the internet. Not only will they be a treat but will also provide you pets with some extra vitamins to help support their immune system as winter approaches.
Have an awesome autumn and keep your pets safe!
If you are ever concerned about your pet always consult your veterinarian, it’s a good idea to have an annual check up to ensure that your pet is fit and healthy.

a family for learning from nursery to sixth form
I’m delighted to welcome you to The South Staffordshire Learning Partnership, a growing family of schools incorporating Codsall Community High School, Bilbrook Church of England Middle School, Perton Middle School, Lane Green First School and St Chad’s Church of England (VC) First School.
We exist to provide the best educational journey for our children, from nursery to sixth form. We have an exceptional reputation for our nurturing environments, academic and sporting provision as well as a strong track record of success throughout.
Our educational vision is simple, to ensure that every child’s journey is shaped by a consistent approach that enables children to flourish as wellrounded people that achieve outstanding results.
We aim to develop a world class learning environment through a simple focus on the most important element of our job – teaching and learning. We are relentless about excellent provision in all of our classrooms.
It’s not just about the academic work that goes on within The Learning Partnership. The last number of years have been challenging for everyone so we work in partnership with our parents to ensure that the children are supported, are kind to others and have an educational experience which enriches them and exposes them to new experiences and
new opportunities. We want our students to be considerate, open and inclusive people who go on and make a success of life once they’ve left the safety of the school environment. We aim to produce self-sufficient, resilient and hardworking young people who have a zest for life and make the most of the opportunities afforded to them.
Whilst all five schools are part of the same Learning Partnership each school flourishes and enhances its own unique identity within our family of schools. Each school has a very distinct character and we encourage and celebrate that. Whilst each school can benefit from being within the learning partnership and the broad aspiration of excellence in all that we do is consistent, it’s still important that each school maintains its uniqueness.
Parents choose an individual school, not a collective of schools and therefore it’s vitally important that we don’t lose sight of the things that make them special. Parents are always incredibly impressed by what they see in the classrooms and corridors and we are always delighted to be able to demonstrate to parents just what makes each of our schools so special.”

discover tettenhall college
Tettenhall College is a wonderful day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 2 – 18 years of age. Whilst 80% of our 500 pupils are British and local to this area, we are home to a wonderfully cosmopolitan boarding community of students from more than 24 countries, with 100 full-time boarders thriving, growing, and bringing so much to our school.
Located in Tettenhall, the school walls create a beautiful boundary for our pupils and is home to a wonderful campus full of heritage buildings, modern facilities, acres of woodland, playing fields, pitches, and a full-scale Victorian theatre. It is quite possibly one of the most wonderful educational settings within the region.
TC is a school that’s thriving. Under its Headmaster Mr Christopher McAllister, pupil numbers have never been healthier. The school is going from strength to strength in its 160th year, with a leadership team that is driven, ambitious and experienced. It’s a team that’s bringing the school together to make it greater than the sum of its parts. There’s a core set of values followed daily at TC: Ambition, Character, Community, Creativity and Opportunity. Simple statements perhaps, yet values are only meaningful when the children understand their
meaning and how they can personally bring them to life in everything they do.
Children at TC are known. They are individuals whose personal skills and talents form their individual learning plan. We aspire for academic achievement and excellence for every pupil. Look at our university destinations, they are excellent. What is often lost in the educational landscape of today, is the importance of knowing a child, ensuring that they are fulfilled in their learning, secure in their relationships and confident in themselves. TC nurtures this and when you meet the pupils, you’ll see it. When you meet our staff, you’ll understand it. We want as many children as possible to experience and benefit from all that we deliver. As a registered charity we continue bringing scholarship and bursary opportunities to deserving children. We also ensure that every family who commits to being part of the ‘TC family’ is known and valued.
The world of today is challenging, TC is committed to ensuring all pupils who experiences its education will be well placed to tackle all that they will face with compassion, gratitude, intelligence, and as a citizen of our global world.
We can’t wait to meet you and welcome you to TC.

independent schools of the year award
Wolverhampton Grammar School’s outstanding educational partnerships have been shortlisted for an Independent Schools of the Year Award 2023.
The award nomination celebrates the work of the School’s Jenyns Library and in particular, Head Librarian, Zoe Rowley. Enabling children to meet that one inspirational speaker or to read a life-shaping book can really set them on the path to a lifetime of academic and social achievement. Over the last nine years, Mrs Rowley has worked tirelessly to create opportunities for school children across Wolverhampton and the West Midlands.
Working with Authors Aloud UK, Wolverhampton Grammar School is now the ‘go-to’ school for publishers, providing unrivalled access to the best-loved children’s authors. This year author visits have included Thomas Taylor who illustrated the cover art for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, AF Steadman, Chris Smith and Jamie Johnson series author Dan Freedman. On World Book Day 2023, Wolverhampton Grammar School brought together 750 school children from 20 schools for a fantastic event at Grand Station with the prized How to Train Your Dragon author Cressida Cowell. Thanks to the generous support of the Merchant Taylors’ Foundation, every child was also gifted a signed hardback copy of Cressida’s latest book.
Emily Birch, a teacher at St. Bartholomew’s Primary School commented, “Many thanks Zoe and the WGS team for your continued commitment to inspiring a community of young readers across Wolverhampton.”
The Jenyns Library is at the heart of the School and every child joining Wolverhampton Grammar School is gifted a book. Students take part in Book Clubs, bookrelated school trips and become regular visitors to the library. One of the popular extra-curricular clubs is the BBC Young Reporter Club. For the second year running a WGS pupil has been named the West Midlands Regional Winner. Congratulations to Luke in Year 11, who as a keen football player and referee, chose to explore the issue of concussion in football. His report will be professionally produced and aired on the BBC later this year.
To find out more about Wolverhampton Grammar School, please register for our Open Day on Saturday 7th October at www.wgs.org. uk or book a tour with the Admissions Team: Tel. 01902 422939.

excellence at old hall school
Shropshire’s Old Hall School was today celebrating all-round excellence as it achieved the top rating in every area in its recent inspection.
A team from the Independent Schools Inspectorate lauded the pupils’ academic achievements as “outstanding” as they rated the school “excellent” across the board.
Their personal development and other achievements were also given high praise as the report commended the school for meeting its aim of cultivating an ethos where children were “enabled to achieve their full potential”.
Head at Old Hall Mrs Anna Karacan today said she was delighted the school had been given such a brilliant report which reflected a community committed to being the best it could be in so many different ways.
“This is a tribute to every pupil, parent, and member of staff who are part of the Old Hall family. We know Old Hall is an excellent school that offers children a first-rate education, both academically and pastorally, and this report is well-deserved recognition of that.”
The report particularly praised the high quality of pupils’ knowledge and understanding adding that it was thanks to the breadth and balance of the academic and extensive co-curricular programme at Old Hall.
Communication skills were found to be “outstanding” while pupils also impressed with their “high level” of mathematical abilities and their ICT achievements.
In every age group pupils were described as respectful of each other and seen to have advanced moral sensibilities. Pupils become outstanding decision-makers added the report which also pointed out they make strong contributions to others both within and beyond the school.
Mrs. Karacan said she was pleased to see inspectors recognise efforts by the school to go above and beyond as teaching was credited for challenging and stretching pupils and the Old Hall Horizons after-school programme, newly introduced this year, was singled out for its wide range of activities and clubs.
“In all lessons seen, pupils exhibited very high levels of engagement and concentration, focused very well on their tasks, and were eager to contribute their ideas and produce the best work that they could.” the report stated.
Sport, music, and LAMDA at the school also won plaudits for a range of top results in exams and competitive fixtures and tournaments at regional and county levels.
The inspectors noted that a range of specialist rooms and resources help pupils to hone these skills, which include state-of-the-art facilities both at Old Hall and Wrekin College - the linked senior school which shares the same campus.
Developments across the Wrekin Old Hall Trust in recent years have included a new covered outdoor classroom, new artificial playing surface, and Music School with a double height ensemble rehearsal space while the schools also share a six-lane 25m swimming pool.
For more information about Old Hall and to read the report in full visit www.wrekinoldhall.com.
Wrekin College and Old Hall School will be holding a joint Open Day on Saturday 7th October; for more details and to book your place visit www.wrekinoldhall.com.

200g of sun-blush tomatoes
1 packet of basil
400ml double cream
6 eggs
Maldon sea salt
Extra virgin olive oil

Chopping board
Cooks knife
26 cm pastry ring
Jug
Whisk
Roasting tin
Roasting tray
Parchment paper
Rice or baking beans
Prep time - 20 minutes
Total cooking time - 1 hour
Oven heat - 170oC
METHOD - read through first then measure out all of your ingredients before starting
• Wash and dice the vegetables into 1-inch chunks, toss with oil, sprinkle with sea salt and throw in the roasting tin. Remove the garlic cloves from the outer paper and add to the veg.
• Roast the veg for at least 30 minutes at 170oC turning occasionally.
• Place the pastry ring on the lined roasting tray and carefully push the pastry inside. Where the pastry doesn’t fit the ring just use the excess and push into the empty spaces. Carefully check all around to make sure there are no holes. Brush with egg yolk.
• Scrunch up a piece of parchment paper to fit inside the pastry. Fill with rice and blind bake for about 20 minutes. Remove the paper and rice and bake for a further 10 minutes to crispen the bottom.
• Whisk 4 eggs into 400ml of double cream with a sprinkle of salt to help smooth out the egg. Fill the pastry case with the vegetables and torn basil leaves then pour over the cream and egg mix. Bake for about 45 minutes at 160oC. When ready it should have a slight wobble in the middle. Allow to cool overnight for it to set correctly or just serve it hot immediately with a green salad and some new potatoes.

BENIDORM
Benidorm was a destination that proved to be a highlight for Nick and Royston. The creator of the beloved TV series of the same name, Derren Litten, extended a warm invitation for them to experience the charms of his acclaimed bar, ‘Mateos.’ This establishment, named in homage to Derren’s partner, brought to life the show’s iconic locale and set the stage for an exhilarating week in the sun. Benidorm’s genuine and light-hearted atmosphere captured their hearts; settling into the historic district, meeting many new friends, even mingling with characters from ‘Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun’ at the Villamar Campsite. Eager for an encore, they’ve already locked in plans for a return trip. One can’t help but wish for a reimagined TV series by Derren, starring none other than Nick and Royston!
LONDON DINNER PARTY
The elegant confines of the French restaurant, Oslo Court, set the scene for a memorable evening. Hosting the dinner party was Lisa Voice and among the esteemed guests, were Christopher Biggins and Stephanie Beacham, luminaries of the entertainment world. Nick and Royston`s connection with Christopher spans years, a testament to their close friendship.
The evening was a dazzling affair with such a variety of characters, comprising hilarious stories from the stage and world of entertainment. Fun and laughter was the essence of the evening.
SANDBANKS POLO 2023
Sandbanks Polo has evolved into an annual tradition, etching its place in Nick and Royston’s yearly calendar after the resounding success of last year’s event. Against the backdrop of Sandbanks Beach in Poole, SandPolo emerges as a two-day extravaganza, a spectacle of world-class polo underscored by the clinking of champagne glasses within glamorous company. Following the excitement of the polo matches, a beachside revelry ensued complete with live performances and the beats of renowned DJs. As the weekend culminated, Nick and Royston joined friends and retreated to the newly revamped Nici Hotel in Bournemouth. Nestled between breathtaking vistas and a Miamiinspired pool, this luxurious haven graces the coastline, providing an idyllic conclusion to an exhilarating weekend.

All aboard the Venice Simplon Orient Express
By Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist
For those seeking the ideal gift for someone special or pondering on how to celebrate in style, I experienced the ultimate in luxurious rail travel, thought to be lost to a bygone era, and it is absolutely unforgettable. Yearning for a touch of glamour and romance, I embarked on the Venice Simplon Orient Express.
decor of exquisite mahogany panelling inlaid with individual marquetry patterns of Art Deco floral and leaf, flower garland, flower basket, trapeze and tiger lily. Each cabin offers comfortable seating with plump headrests and an original wash basin with hot and cold water. As I relaxed in the most enchanting surroundings, I gazed upon the passing scenery from my private window whilst sipping on a perfectly chilled glass of champagne; this thrilling experience is simply delightful and made to be shared.
Leaving my cabin, I set off to explore my surroundings and came upon the captivating on-board bar where I was easily persuaded to enjoy a cocktail with my fellow passengers and as we chatted we were serenaded by the gentle strains of the baby grand piano, expertly played by the resident pianist.
Conversations turned to our thoughts of the passengers of the past, the intrigue which still prevails today. We imagined perceived situations of long ago with spies plotting schemes in every corner and we were all transported to another era.
Following in the footsteps of royalty, aristocrats and high profile personalities this is a journey like no other. From the moment passengers arrive on the platform and the elegant train pulls slowly into the station, all eyes are focused on the beauty of the Wagon-Lit carriages.
Standing on the platform in Budapest and more than a little excited as I undertook my overnight journey to London, I was swept away in the romance of the nostalgic atmosphere, smart uniformed porters whisked away my luggage and my charming cabin steward escorted me to a sumptuously furnished private cabin with banquette seating, which converts to a comfortable sleeping berth with luxurious bedding.
The authentic vintage carriages reflect the opulence of rail travel in the 1920’s and 1930’s and feature a rich

Back to the present day and I made my way to the elegant dining car where a five star luncheon, prepared by highly skilled French chefs, was presented. Crisp white linens, twinkling crystal glassware, fine china crockery and of course, the first class service, which easily meets the demands of the most discerning guest. The perfectly presented three-course lunch menu included the most succulent cod dish, flavoured with pistachio and I have to confess that I indulged in the most unforgettable chocolate dessert.
Each tempting course deserves to be savoured at leisure and of course, is accompanied by the finest wines.
After dining I took a leisurely stroll along the corridor of fascinating carriages and visited Agatha Christie’s cabin, which still features a holder for a gentleman’s fob watch on the wall. Agatha Christie became a regular passenger on the train, and was often accompanied by her typewriter. It is said that she was inspired to write Murder on the Orient Express as a result of an incident in 1931 when her journey aboard was delayed for two days due to a thunder storm and the tracks were flooded. On another occasion she was on the platform at Calais when she slipped on ice and fell underneath the train. She was swiftly rescued by a porter and her love for the train never diminished.
I returned to my cabin and succumbed to a comfortable snooze, soothed by the gentle sway of the train and the soft clickety-clack of the train tracks. It was soon time to dress for dinner and I followed a group of ladies in flowing gowns and gentlemen in resplendent attire making their way to the dining car.
Another extravagant dining experience awaited the guests. The four course dinner, which included the finest fillet of beef and accompanied by the ideal red wine, selected by the expert sommelier, was absolutely perfect.
On returning to my cabin I discovered that it had been transformed into a bedroom and following my deep slumber I awoke with the larks and the most delicious breakfast was presented to me by my attentive cabin steward and included hot croissants, piping hot coffee, chilled orange juice and a fine selection of pastries and I confess that I indulged willingly.
All too soon I was disembarking but the adventure continued as the second part of my journey included the most lavish afternoon tea experience on board the British Pullman from Folkestone to London Victoria. The cream and umber coloured Pullman carriages are elegantly furnished and rich in history. Ibis, the oldest carriage, was built in 1925 and features exquisite marquetry medallions and Liberty print upholstery and it was once part of the Cunard boat train transporting passengers to Southampton. Audrey, built in 1932, was used regularly by our late members of the Royal Family, including the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.
Cygnus, with its original Australian walnut panels, mirrors and old prints featured in the film Agatha and Perseus, the carriage which once carried Russian leaders Bulganin and Khrushchev during a state visit to Britain in 1965, once formed part of Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral train.
The Venice Simplon Orient Express and the British Pullman offers passengers an unforgettable journey, the opportunity to experience the very best service, and the finest dining experiences in the most elegant of settings.
As my journey came to an end, I reflected on the words of Agatha Christie ‘All my life I had wanted to go on the Orient Express. When I had travelled to France or Spain or Italy, the Orient Express had often been standing at Calais and I had longed to climb up into it’

healthy ears, healthy brain!
You may have read about the link between dementia and hearing loss. Let’s try and help you understand a little more so that you can be comfortable with the facts.
Studies have explored the relationship between these two conditions, and researchers have identified some potential connections. Here are some key points to consider:
1. Cognitive Load: Hearing loss requires additional cognitive effort or concentration to process auditory information, especially in challenging listening environments. This increased cognitive load may lead to cognitive fatigue, which could contribute to cognitive decline over time.
2. Social Isolation: Hearing loss can often lead to social isolation and reduced engagement in social activities. Social isolation has been associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
3. Brain Structure: Studies using brain imaging techniques have shown that untreated hearing loss is associated with accelerated brain atrophy, particularly in areas responsible for processing auditory information and those linked to memory and cognition.
4. Shared Risk Factors: Hearing loss and cognitive decline share some common risk factors, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and smoking. These factors may contribute to both conditions independently or interactively.
5. Neurotransmitter and Vascular Factors: Some researchers propose that hearing loss may affect neurotransmitter pathways and blood flow in the brain, potentially influencing cognitive function negatively.
It’s important to note that although there is a link between hearing loss and cognitive decline, it does not necessarily mean that hearing loss directly causes cognitive decline so try not to worry. More research is needed understand the relationship between these two conditions.
How can you help yourself? The key is to maintain a healthy lifestyle;
• Regular exercise – Golfing, a regular exercise class or playing with your grandchildren is great, but even a short walk in the garden or around your home can help!
• Eat a healthy balanced diet – don’t give up the things you love but balance it out with that healthy food!
• Keep mentally active – crosswords, puzzles and quizzes are a great way to keep that brain active!
• Socialise – family, friends or a local group even if its just for coffee is great stimulation for the brain!
• Check your hearing! We can help you with this one! Our friendly expert audiology teams are on hand to give great advice and support
Early intervention with hearing aids or other hearing assistive devices can improve communication and potentially reduce some of the cognitive load associated with hearing loss.

As we live longer, the incidence of strokes, dementia and loss of mental capacity is becoming more prevalent, with more than two million people in the UK unable to make their own decisions. Hopefully, you’ll live to a ripe old age without facing these issues. However, if you do experience any of these, it can be without warning and could be a stressful time for you and your family. Having the right measures in place can mean a much easier process when your family need to help you, causing much relief for busy family members and leaving you feeling less of a burden.
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs)
This is where Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) can help, and I believe they are possibly more important than a Will, as they help you during your lifetime, if necessary. LPAs enable you to nominate people to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to, or act for you if you are hospitalised or immobile. There are two types
of LPA: one for financial matters and one for health and welfare decisions.
My extensive experience of preparing LPAs for clients means I can help you find solutions to suit your particular circumstances, including who to choose as Attorneys, and how they should act together.
Think of LPAs like insurance; you may never need them, but if you do, and you don’t have them, the consequences can be pretty dreadful. Without an LPA, if you lose mental capacity to make decisions, somebody would need to apply to court, which is a lengthy, expensive and intrusive process for your loved ones to undertake.
So, take that first step towards reassurance and relief and contact Gavin Ward at Kenneth Jones Solicitors in Tettenhall on 01902 745773.

are you guilty of putting your head in the sand when considering later life? perhaps now is the time to get organised.
As we navigate through life, financial stability is important to most us, if not all. Yet, as we enter our senior years, thoughts frequently turn from immediate financial health to the legacy we leave behind. If you are aged 50 or older, it’s perhaps time to ask yourself a pivotal question: are you planning on creating generational wealth?
Generational wealth is the financial legacy you pass on to the next generation, a tangible representation of the hard work and wise financial decisions made throughout your life. The wealth you created not only provides a safety net for your children but also allows them to explore opportunities that may have otherwise been out of reach. With effective generational wealth planning, you’re not just leaving an inheritance, you’re shaping the financial future of your lineage.
A significant component of generational wealth planning is understanding and preparing for the complexities of inheritance tax, which brings us to a key question: what is inheritance tax? Inheritance tax, known colloquially in the UK as the ‘death duties’ is a levy paid on the estate
(property, money, and possessions) of someone who has passed away. It is a fundamental consideration of wealth planning, especially for those wishing to pass on a substantial legacy to the next generation.
The question of when you have to pay inheritance tax is pivotal. The tax is typically due within six months from the end of the month in which the deceased passed away. If the tax due is not paid within this period, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) may charge interest on the outstanding amount.
Now, who has to pay inheritance tax? Usually, the executor of the will or the administrator of the estate takes on this responsibility. If there is no will, the law decides who the administrator is (usually the closest relative). The tax is paid out of the deceased’s estate before any distribution to the beneficiaries. However, in some cases, if the estate can’t pay, beneficiaries may become responsible for the tax.
So, how do you go about inheritance tax planning? Inheritance tax planning is an essential aspect of generational wealth management, and it starts with
60 finance
planning ahead: the importance of generational wealth management for over 50s
understanding the thresholds and reliefs. You can pass on up to £325,000 to your heirs without them having to pay inheritance tax - this is known as the ‘nil-rate band.’ Any amount above this threshold is potentially taxed at 40%.
The aim of inheritance tax planning is to maximise your nil-rate band and take advantage of available reliefs, such as the residence nil-rate band, which applies if you’re passing your home to a direct descendant. Inheritance tax planning also includes making gifts, establishing trusts, and considering life insurance options, all with the aim of reducing the amount of tax your estate will owe upon your demise.
Achieving effective generational wealth planning, however, requires more than just a keen understanding of inheritance tax. It needs a holistic view of your current wealth, envisaged future expenses, and the legacy you wish to leave behind. Engaging a professional financial adviser who specialises in inheritance planning can be a prudent step, providing you with the advice and guidance needed to navigate these critical decisions.
In conclusion, if you are aged 50 or older, now is the optimal time to consider generational wealth planning. Understanding and planning for inheritance tax is a fundamental part of this process, ensuring that your wealth is preserved and passed on to future generations with minimal tax implications. The legacy you leave behind can shape your family’s financial future, and getting your plans in order well in advance can ensure this legacy is as robust and beneficial as possible.

separating finances in divorce –what are you entitled to?
Separating finances when going through divorce can be tricky. Common questions will usually be ‘What am I entitled to?’ ‘Can I stay in my home?’ ‘Will my pension be affected?’. These can be difficult questions to answer and will depend on your individual circumstances. The starting point for a division of assets is usually a 50/50 split. This can include assets in both joint names or a parties sole name. A number of factors will need to be considered and these include needs, age, length of the marriage and any dependants.
These are just some of the factors to be considered, and circumstances can sometimes result in a departure from equality. For example if the marriage is short in length pre-marital assets may not be included when dividing the assets. If one spouse lives with dependants (children of the family) their housing and income needs may be greater and thus they may need a greater share of the assets to meet their reasonable needs on divorce.
To conclude when dealing with finances on divorce, the Court have powers to distribute assets held in both names, including pensions or the sale of a property. If you are currently separating from a partner or going through a divorce and would like to explore your options and receive advice and dedicated client care regarding the division of your assets please do not hesitate to contact Lisa Ridge or a member of our friendly and professional team regarding your circumstances, please call 01902 313311 or visit www.thornessolicitors. co.uk for more information.

suzuki s-cross ultra glide
The Suzuki S-Cross has been available for quite a time and as time moves on, it was time for a makeover and an update. The latest Suzuki S-Cross SUV externally has received quite a few changes, writes Bob Hickman.
It is more muscular in design, larger and more angular. The front has a raised bonnet, a new grille, a huge amount of LED lamps are now fitted. Roof rails and an integrated rear spoiler have been incorporated as well. The interior has an all-new design and is more spacious and versatile.
Suzuki has always been easy on the eye and easy to live with vehicle and the new S-Cross will be a welcome addition.
One of the most important features of the new S-Cross is it is a full hybrid. The basic power plant is a 1462cc 4-cylinder petrol engine. This produces 115ps, but when you add in to this an electric motor producing marginally under 25ps, you have quite a lively performer. Bring in to the equation low emissions of 118g/km and a projected 54mpg on the combined cycle and I think you start to understand why this particular new S-Cross will tick a lot of boxes for a discerning buyer.
Suzuki has an AGS (Auto Gear Shift), It sounds a mouthful but it is effectively an automatic transmission system.
There is an option to choose between standard or Eco driving mode, and in addition my particular Ultra Glide had a choice, dependant on the conditions, of variable traction control because it had 4-wheel drive.
The Suzuki has always been an able off-road performer and the All-Grip system allows you to choose between Automatic, Sport, Snow, lock it in to a mode where the going gets tough is simplicity in itself.
The S-Cross is a very safe vehicle, there is a comprehensive list of active and passive safety features, it has scored 5 stars in the Euro NCap test and it is equipped with 7 air bags, dual sense brake support, lane departure prevention, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitors, the list goes on and on. Fortunately, it is possible to disengage some of the vehicle features so to be able to enjoy your driving and not the vehicle deciding what you should or not be doing. One particular feature that is available, and very useful in this day and age, is the hill-hold control.
The S-Cross accommodates 4-adults, 5 at an absolute push, rear space is at a premium. From a driving perspective infotainment and communications are controlled from the 9” display screen, this included a very good DAB digital radio, USB connectors, a navigational system which enabled you, if you so wished, to incorporate Android Auto and Apple Car Play.
The little bit of extra height in the S-Cross gives increased all round visibility especially with the amount of glass which was contained within the vehicle.
On open roads it performed admirably, the opportunity to actually take it off road did occur on one occasion, and, due to a deluge it was a delight to introduce the 4-wheel system to expedite ourselves from a somewhat slippery field where we had been enjoying a summer fete.
The amount of equipment is on the high side, the Ultra, as tested had wonderful leather seat upholstery, an integrated-on board navigational system, a huge sliding panoramic sunroof, which at times was somewhat problematic with the heat that we suddenly encountered during the ownership of the vehicle and I was pleased for the curtain which prevented the glare of the sun.
The S-Cross is priced for £26,749 for the entry level Motion, my Ultra Grade Hybrid ALLGRIP model was £31,549.

subaru outback 2.5i boxer touring lineartronic awd
The name Subaru has been synonymous with off road vehicles since they were imported in to the UK in the early 70’s, and the Outback continues that well proven tradition, writes Bob Hickman. The exterior, it looks like an estate car on steroids, not so much a SUV but an over grown estate vehicle. The benefits from a decent 4-wheel drive is the way it is able to adapt to any sort of road conditions, there could be a car boot sale and trying to extricate from the muddy field or more importantly when the weather does turn and everyone is floundering in the snow and ice, you just sail serenely past.
The Outback is a large vehicle, make no mistake, just under 5 metres long, it is large car, but when you actually sit in the driver’s seat, surrounded and cocooned in a degree of luxury, it doesn’t feel that intimidating. It is also on the narrower side so once again it is a vehicle that is practical in all aspects. Due to the length the vehicle is a very spacious car inside and has lots of practicality. The slightly raised position does increase your visibility and the large amount of glass makes it relatively easy to manoeuvre and have a decent view.
The suspension is ok, certainly off-road it was a superb performer and on open motorways and dual carriageways it was stable and it was secure. Where it does tick all the boxes is if you should venture off the beaten track.
The Outback has permanent 4-wheel drive facility and the well proven Boxer engine which is a 2,498cc, which is producing quite a healthy 169ps, the 0-60 gallop is 10.2 secs and the engine is a confident performer and its automatic transmission will take it up to a top speed in the region of 120mph.
The Subaru Range does not include a diesel option, neither is a manual gearbox a further option.
The level and standard of equipment is on the high side, you expect to see things like automatic rain sensing windscreen wipers and door mirrors that fold automatically. I particularly like the 18” alloy wheels, they gave a quality feel to it, I think the roof rails which are always a useful feature for extra luggage capacity.
The sunroof I kept it in the closed position, my period with the Subaru it was very intense, hot, sunny period and the sun through the glass was somewhat problematic.
The interior has a plethora of cubby holes and cup holders and door pockets, all manor of items, another feature that is useful is the powered tail gate with the handsfree function, and I do like the tonneau cover, so that if you have a few things in the boot it will cover them away from prying eyes. The dual zone automatic air conditioner was an additional added feature to dial in the temperature that you wanted on either side of the vehicle. Entertainment was an audio with an 11.6” screen and addition a Harman & Kardon audio system, this has to be experienced to be believed.
The Satellite Navigation was a joy and easy to operate and the voice recognition system, although I didn’t over tax it, was a useful facility for if you like lots of toys and gadgets.
The Subaru is a safe car, it has like most vehicles, a plethora of air bags including front, side, curtain, knee, seat cushions, in addition a reversing camera for a vehicle of this length was quite useful and a first for me was the factor that it had a washer to keep the lens of the rear camera from getting dirty and clouded.
All in all, those of you who are friends of Subaru’s will be impressed by the Outback. My particular derivative had an on the road price of £42,495.

all departments remain open as redevelopment of brindley kia wolverhampton takes shape
first stop the first name on wolverhampton motorists’ lips!
First Stop Wolverhampton is the first garage name on motorists’ lips, following an eye-catching refurbishment along Chapel Ash which has put the centre’s name up in lights - quite literally!
Formerly known as HiQ, the garage is one of Wolverhampton’s oldest and most iconic around, with first impressions lasting with tens of thousands of drivers over many years.
But with illuminated, striking signage, new equipment and access to an even wider range of premium tyres, motorists can now look forward to an even more memorable service. And to celebrate the new chapter in the company’s history, free tyre safety checks are being offered to all.
Owner Simon Bennett made the decision to become a First Stop franchise partner, which has allowed for a number of improvements including a £25,000 makeover. The garage, which was originally founded over 100 years ago as Staffordshire Motor Tyre Company, has evolved to become a leader in automotive services today, with all mechanics from the local area and boasting extensive qualifications in vehicle maintenance.
It now stocks a broader range of premium tyres featuring the prestigious Bridgestone and Firestone ranges for the first time, while a number of exciting new promotions and offers will also be rolled out. Technicians will also be trained to even higher levels and existing garage equipment will also be upgraded.
Owner Simon Bennett, who took over the reins from his dad Colin, said:
“We are extremely excited to be embarking on a new journey with First Stop. The partnership will allow us to offer our customers an even better service and stay ahead of the game when it comes to technology and mobility solutions in an ever-changing marketplace.”
“We want to reassure customers that the same team that they are familiar with will remain, along with our customary levels of honesty and trust.”
First Stop’s Retail Network Manager Mark Widdows said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Simon and his team to the First Stop Network. The reputation he has built up in Wolverhampton over the years is second-to-none and his decision to partner with us validates our own franchise proposition.
“Each garage we partner with shares our same values and are respected businesses in their communities. It goes without saying that we couldn’t think of a more fitting garage to partner with than First Stop Wolverhampton. We will now be able to offer them support in a number of ways and we can’t wait to get to work.”
First Stop Wolverhampton offers the full range of automotive services including MOTs, servicing, batteries, wheel balancing, brakes and all other mechanical repairs. Its investment in the latest wheel alignment equipment also makes it one of the most technologically advanced garages in the city for this nature of work. Meanwhile, its tyre range will now be even more comprehensive, with great performing products stored in-house for cars, vans, 4x4s, trailers, hatchbacks and sports utility vehicles.
