NEW AUTUMN COLLECTIONS OUT NOW - BEAUMONT TEXTILES, PRESTIGIOUS, CHATHAM GLYN, DESIGN STUDIO DISPLAY DRIED FLOWERS Displaying dried flowers such as pampas grass and dried ruscus add a subtle, rustic styling element to your room as summer transitions into autumn. And the best part about these? They’re so low maintenance! For a glamorous Halloween centerpiece idea, paint your pumpkin white and use it as a vase to home a stunning dried flower arrangement for the wow SCATTERfactor.AUTUMNAL

Scattering textured and warmer coloured cushions and throws instantly creates a cosy feel in any space. I am obsessed with chunky, knitted throws at this time of year in richer beiges, browns and burnt oranges such as this one from Dunelm to drape over the arm of a sofa or on the back of an armchair.

CUSHIONS AND THROWS

Inspire yourself by the season. Think earthy, natural, rustic textures and colours. Adding jute placemats paired with a garland brings the outdoors in for a calm and atmospheric dinner setting with loved ones. Harvest season is in its prime at this time, so fruits and vegetables such as pumpkins or squashes make for a great table decor addition, with the benefit of adding a pop of colour too!

Set the tone of autumn in your house with your senses! Autumnal scents add ambience to your space and create a cosy vibe. I love browsing the candle shelves in September/ October because the scents are just the best at this time of year. Home Sense carries a range of affordable Sand & Fog candles. A couple of my favourites are ‘White Pumpkin’ and ‘Honeycrisp Harvest’. They also stock them in pumpkin-shaped glass jars so they’re a styling piece as well as making the room smell amazing. A top tip is to combine scented candles with reed diffusers so the scent is double-layered and lingers even after the candle is blown out.

Wreaths and garlands aren’t just for Christmas! Create the warmest welcome as you pull onto your drive by placing an autumnal wreath on your front door. I love the wild- twiggy style wreaths combined with the warm, rich oranges and browns from dried flowers. This laid back style sets the tone for your decor throughout the rest of the house. You can also incorporate some purples, teal and olive green for a more transitional, bohemian style wreath as the summer fades into autumn.

Autumn is all about natural materials and shapes. Organic, shaped clay ceramics create a sense of comfort and relaxation, especially when placed directly next to other natural materials such as wool, linen or hessian. These can be incorporated into the dining room in the forms of plates, jugs and bowls but also in the living area or bedrooms for vases or lamps.

Claverley Farm Logs is a family business based on the outskirts of the village of Claverley. Brothers Chris and Tim ensure the logs they sell are well seasoned and barn stored ready for you to burn. All of our Barn stored logs are 20% or less moisture and are a mix of oak, ash and Birch. The Kiln dried logs are less than 18% moisture and are ash. Both types are ideal as it is important to burn dry wood so not to damage your burner or chimney. Our logs are also approved by the Woodsure ‘Ready to Burn’ initiative. This approval is testament that our logs are of the highest quality. We sell them in either Bulk Bags or loose Loads (2.5 bags worth) and deliver them up to a 12mile radius of our farm. The majority of our wood is locally sourced and is from well managed woodlands. We look forward to seeing new and existing customers throughout this winter ahead. Please do telephone us for more information or go onto our website where you will see the full range of products that we sell which you can also purchase online.

Keeping the heat in this winter will be a priority and the good news for homeowners is that upgrading their windows, doors, or conservatory roof are the most instantly rewarding ways of energy-proofing a home.

“While home improvements have always been desirable due to aesthetics, we are now seeing homeowners look at them from an energy saving standpoint. With sustainability and thermal efficiency such an issue, it’s no surprise that consumers have a better understanding of window energy ratings and U-values and are more aware of how they can save energy in their home.”

With experts forecasting the October energy price cap could rise by up to 78%, taking the average annual bills to a whopping £3,500, the scale and extent of the challenges facing households is set to get even tougher.

To help you get the home improvements you need to reduce your energy bills, Wolverhampton Glass is offering up to 35% off windows, doors and conservatories.

Modern energy efficient windows and exterior doors lock the heat inside a home while blocking the cold out, containing and conserving heat within the home in the Allwinter.an existing conservatory with a polycarbonate roof will need to retain heat in the winter will be a cuttingedge replacement warm roof.

“The easiest way to insulate a house and make it more energy efficient is to replace single glazed or old existing double glazed windows with modern, A+ rated double, triple, or secondary glazing, frames and panels which allow more energy into a property than they lose, potentially saving as much as 30% on heating bills during the winter,” added Neal.

“Upgrading exterior doors and replacing a conservatory roof will also make sure homeowners don’t feel the pinch and have more money in their pocket for their family.”

“The one-off government support payments only scratch the surface of soaring household energy bills, and with experts forecasting another 4% rise in energy prices in the first quarter of 2023, now is the perfect time for households to reduce their energy spending,” said Neal.

It means that homeowners need to think seriously about reducing their energy bills to cope with the price hike, according to Neal Harper, Managing Director of leading Midland’s home improvement company Wolverhampton Glass.

When the team came to install I was blown away by how efficient and helpful they were; Alek and Mark talked me through every stage from the groundscrew building supports through to installing the data cabling. I also tweaked the design of the decking, making it slightly bigger and adding some steps, this was no trouble to them at all. We are so glad that we went for the antique composite cladding along with the coffee composite decking the contrast works fantastically well with the Aluminium Anthracite bifold doors and with no maintenance, superb advice again. It was a significant investment however worth every penny! Highly recommended. I have no qualms in saying that these guys are the best in the business & offer a fantastic product that is far superior to any of its rivals.

I cannot speak highly enough of the entire service from design to installation and quality of the finished room by IGS, Ian was so helpful during the design process with his knowledge and experience, the garden room was space planned with office desk, bookcase, sofa and wall mounted LED. All the office furniture was made to measure by IGS in their very own manufacturing base in Wolverhampton which helped the space planning.

Once a state grammar school for boys, this 510-year-old establishment now offers the very best 4-18 through-school independent education for boys and girls in the City of Wolverhampton and its Aenvirons.much-celebrated aspect of the School is its ability to be future focused and equip students for life. This is highlighted in Wolverhampton Grammar School’s approach to embracing the use of digital technology in the classroom. Outsiders looking in might think that an iPad for every student is merely a gimmick, whereas in fact it can add a fourth dimension to teaching and learning. The raison d’être behind the introduction of its iPad scheme is constantly borne out by students’ greater engagement with their subject matter - be that a study of geometric shapes or a recount of a moment in history. The journey began back in 2017 and shortly afterwards, Wolverhampton Grammar School was shortlisted for the Times Education Supplement Independent Schools Award for the “Best use of Technology”. Five years on, the use of technology is seamlessly integrated into a teaching style which continues to emphasise outstanding teacher and student relationships. Right from the beginning of their WGS journey the youngest children in Reception have access to iPads. From Year 3 upwards this moves to personal ownership but handwriting remains an important skill to be taught, just as much as a teaching style where human relationships is paramount. It is this blending learning that is so compelling and empowers students to interrogate and investigate a mix of tailored resources, fuelling individuality of learning.

As Head Alex Frazer remarks, “Wolverhampton Grammar School has a long and proud history but one of our greatest traditions is that of looking forward and not standing still. Whilst retaining the best elements of a time-honoured approach to education, we never stop anticipating the future. We want to equip our students with the skills to navigate the careers of tomorrow, many of which are yet to be written.”

At Wolverhampton Grammar School, students and staff have wholeheartedly embraced the use of digital technology. Prospective families are invited to visit on Saturday 8th October to find out more. 32

These sizzling summer months have brought great joy and celebrations to the Midlands. From the success of the 2022 Commonwealth Games to enjoying long hot days, everyone has been busy with holidays and those long-awaited are no exception and they have been filling us in on their adventures over the summer.

Cliveden House in Berkshire is infamous for its wild parties, scandalous affairs and where Meghan Markle stayed the night before her wedding. This luxury country estate was the backdrop of their best friend’s Julie and Roy Millard’s daughter`s wedding. The house and grounds encapsulated the romance of the day for Laura and Josh and the day was a perfect blend of true glamour with the intimacy of a family wedding. Definitely a day to remember!

To continue the celebrations, the friends were flown to Marbella to soak up the sun and party the evenings away in Puerto Banus. Sandbanks in Poole, is the epitome of the English Riviera with the white sands, luxury properties and glamourous yachts. Staying at the boutique Harbour Heights Hotel overlooking Poole harbour, Nick & Royston joined friends for The Sandbanks Polo. A highlight in the polo calendar is The British Beach Polo Championships and this event is the largest beach polo event in the world. Champagne kicked off the day, followed by a sumptuous lunch whilst watching the polo, then top DJs for a full-on party late into the evening. An amazing time, with amazing company! 42

Nick and Royston joined friend, TV`s Christopher Biggins, to watch the latest production of Romeo and Juliet at Stafford Castle. Their mutual friend, comedienne and actress Gill Jordan or as we know her Doreen Tipton, was playing the nurse and invited her close friends to come and Itwatch.was the 30th anniversary of The Stafford Festival Shakespeare productions at the castle and after the last two years of cancellations, it was going to return in a spectacular showpiece. With 11,000 attending, it was a great atmosphere and in this historic backdrop, it was a thrill to watch.

Friends and fashion photographers, Gary and Lewis, threw their annual White and Silver Party held at The Manor Hotel in Birmingham. Nick and Royston were invited to join their team, models and friends who have worked closely with Gary and Lewis over the years. It was a fabulous night full of fun, laughter and frivolities.

California The Golden State

If you want to experience it all, then a multi-centre holiday in Florida can allow you to experience the excitement of Disney, the beaches of the Key West and the vibrancy of Miami.

travel

America’s Golden State of California can offer you amazing culture in San Francisco, mouth-watering cuisine in Santa Barbara, wine tasting in Napa or Sonoma, beautiful coastline along the Big Sur, or shopping galore in Los Angeles. Explore the vibrant golden beaches of Santa Monica and Laguna Beach, get close to nature in the forests of giant redwoods and sequoias or relax by hot springs in desert resorts.

In California you can experience it all with either a multicentre holiday with flights between each destination, or see it all in a classic American car and road trip across the state.

America really does have something to offer for everyone, whether you want to enjoy a city break in New York, the coastline of California or the theme parks in Florida, here are some of my top picks.

Florida gets its name for its all-year-round sunshine, making it a destination for any time of the year. With its picture blue skies, warm waters and sun-soaked, white sandy beaches, what is there not to love?

My family and I are off on our much-anticipated Californian Road Trip this Summer, after several postponements due to Covid, so I thought I would focus this month’s article on America!

Florida The Sunshine State

But Florida is more than just sunshine, whether you want to get close to wildlife in its natural habitat, travel along the Everglades in an airboat, meet your favourite Characters at Disney World or enjoy white knuckle rides at Universal, Florida has a lot to offer.

The silver State of Nevada is a state of contrasts. From the neon lights, glitzy casinos and glamorous clubs of Las Vegas, to the captivating Western towns and mesmerising parks of Northern Nevada, the diversity of the state is jaw dropping.

The vastness of this amazing country means I’m not able to cover all the other fantastic places there are to visit in this article, however, if you are looking to put together your own American Road Trip, get in touch and find out how I can help put together the perfect itinerary for you.

If you are simply taking a trip to its famous Sin City, Las Vegas, with its neon lights, nightlife, crazy sights, crazy people and wild gambling, you won’t be disappointed.

PersonalBrookTravel Consultant

However, travel away from the city and you will find snow-capped mountains, vast meadows, sprawling valleys and deep canyons. From the tranquillity of Lake Tahoe and Lake Mead, with its monumental Hoover Dam, to a journey along the Loneliest Road – part of the old Pony Express Trail, a visit to its well-known ghost towns or a trip to Death Valley National Park, there is lots to explore in this amazing State.

If you do just visit the city that never sleeps, you will experience an abundance of unique and exciting activities. From its famous landmarks such as the Empire State building and Times Square, to its individual and distinctive neighbourhoods with their array of restaurants, to its famous art galleries or shows on Broadway, New York City never fails to impress.

Explore further afield and you’ll find the tranquil vineyards of Finger Lakes, spectacular thundering Niagara Falls, the sparkling beaches of Long Island or the moody peaks of the Adirondack Mountains.

A lot of people travel to New York State simply to visit the Big Apple, which certainly won’t disappoint, however, there is a lot more to this part of America than just the hustle, bustle and bright lights of its famous city.

Whilst you have been collecting images and ideas online by saving them on Pinterest or by saving screenshots it is always a great benefit to look at which florist business name the pictures belong to. This ensures that you know the style of the florist and what wealth of experience they have. If you can’t see the style you are looking for on their gallery, you are allowed to ask them if they are capable to create the designs you require and ask to see more images. When you have shortlisted your florists, hopefully including ourselves on the shortlist, then book your consultation with a member of our design team. Following your consultation you will receive a full quotation based on your ideas and individual theme. Should you wish us to fulfil your wedding flowers, then confirm and save your date and arrange payment of your booking deposit. You will then receive your receipt and confirmation.

Getting ourselves ready for long dark nights and dull days isn’t the best, but the bright vibrant colour we have enjoyed all summer is going straight through into the autumn – winter season; raspberry pinks, and gorgeous shades of green which has been key this year. Look out for fabulous knitwear, lots of coloured leather, embellished accessories, and the aviator jacket is back, probably thanks to Top Gun! Kate Spade is one of my favourite shops to visit in London, but an online fix shows us gorgeous accessories ready for the new autumn season.

Emerald green has been a key colour so far this year. Wear it from head to toe and add raspberry or violet accessories. It’s always great to see the new season’s knitwear. I would happily buy them all! The twin set is back - take a look at Ralph Lauren in John Lewis. Teeth are removed and replaced with dental implants which act as new, secure roots. A couple of hours later a preprepared provisional bridge is fitted restoring your smile but with immediate function from fixed replacement teeth. After six months or so the initial immediate function bridge is replaced with the final restorations constructed with individually crafted ceramic teeth. This results in aesthetic and very strong replacement teeth.

As a medical practice it’s important to us that we avoid any risk to our patients, such as the spread of infection. This can happen by using polish that has previously been used on someone with fungal nail. There is also a risk of damaging the nail plates if you go for a treatment with someone who has had inadequate training.

misconduct in divorce still costs

The recent case of VV v VV [2022] highlights that whilst costs orders within the family court are rare, in some circumstances poor behaviour will not go unpunished.

The case involved a whirlwind romance between a wealthy US Tech entrepreneur and a Scandinavian composer which led to a short marriage of only five months. Despite the wealth involved, the feature of the case was the wife’s culpability for the husband’s financial ruin. By her interference in his business affairs whilst the divorce proceedings were progressing, the effect of which was to cost him” tens of millions of dollars”, the award the court made was limited only to her immediate needs. Whilst those needs were assessed at £750,000, this award was based on a sum she needed to redeem her mortgage, a further sum to clear all her outstanding legal costs, plus £150,000 a year “rehabilitative maintenance” for 3 years. Significantly, the judge commented that it would have been much greater had it not been for her behaviour and the court has since ordered the wife to pay £100,000 of her former husband’s costs.

business 69 Lisa

Lisa Ridge of Thornes commented that, “whilst £750,000 will seem to most like a considerable sum to recover, this was relatively nominal compared to the wealth that was at stake. Whilst the court does make allowances for imperfect conduct of those involved in divorce proceedings due to the emotional nature of the process, this case serves as a timely reminder that such tolerance on the part of the court is not limitless.”

Normal life expectancy was around age 70 in the past, so retirement was often for quite a short time. Work was often a lot more physical, whereas in today’s world, more of us have jobs that are not physical at all. Today many of us are expected to live well into our 80’s and beyond. If you retire at a traditional age in your mid 60’s, that’s a lot of time retired and a lot of time to fill. So, I am now seeing more people leaving their current roles, but not retiring in the traditional sense. They are moving onto something new, often to do something that they have never done before. Helping them to stay ‘relevant’ on their terms. I have a client about to retire who is going to be a ‘turnstile’ operator at Molineux from this coming season. A lifelong Wolves fan who wants to give back to the club. No financial reason at all, just for the love of it.

Why has the thought of retiring changed?

Does this mean that I don’t need to plan for retirement? Absolutely not. In fact, it’s more important than ever. Planning to be financially independent in retirement is as important as ever as more of us are living longer. Being financially independent in retirement gives us a great deal more choices.

• We can work the hours we want to work. 70 you want to retire worryfree or want to be financially independent?

Over the years as a financial planner, I hear more and more people saying that they don’t want to retire and don’t like the idea of it all. Not because they cannot afford to, but because they want to keep being active in some capacity. They have a real concern about what they will do with their time. If that resonates with you, you are not alone.

Here are my tips for those who want to be financially independent in their later years.

2. Think about when you would want to transition from your current work to the next chapter?

4. Consider amalgamating your retirement plans together in preparation for the future. Being clear about your future plans can be a challenge, so making the right choice is essential. None of us want to make any mistakes that we need to rectify. If you are uncertain about your future plans or need reassurance you are on track, it’s useful to speak to a financial adviser. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. 71 finance Martin Dodd is an Independent Financial Adviser providing financial planning advice in the Wolverhampton area. Midlands Investment Agency is based in Tettenhall High Street. Contact him on 01902 742221.

3. Work out if you are on track to achieve financial independence.

1. Understand exactly what your current situation is – What have you accumulated so far?

• We can dip in and out of work as it suits us. So, if you are in your 50s and starting to think about later life, what should you be thinking about?

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs)

own!

As we live longer, the incidence of strokes, dementia and loss of mental capacity is becoming more prevalent, with more than two million people in the UK unable to make their own decisions. Hopefully, you’ll live to a ripe old age without facing these issues.  However, if you do experience any of these, it can be without warning and could be a stressful time for you and your family.  Having the right measures in place can mean a much easier process when your family need to help you, causing much relief for busy family members and leaving you feeling less of a burden.

Think of LPAs like insurance; you may never need them, but if you do, and you don’t have them, the consequences can be pretty dreadful.  Without an LPA, if you lose mental capacity to make decisions, somebody would need to apply to court, which is a lengthy, expensive and intrusive process for your loved ones to undertake.

This is where Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) can help, and I believe they are possibly more important than a Will, as they help you during your lifetime, if necessary.  LPAs enable you to nominate people to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to, or act for you if you are hospitalised or immobile. There are two types of LPA: one for financial matters and one for health and welfare decisions.

Fireworks can be very scary for some pets, loud bangs, flashing lights and other unfamiliar sounds, fireworks

As the leaves begin to fall, the clocks go back and the dark nights start to draw in. Our attention turns to Halloween and then Bonfire night just a few days later, with it comes chocolate and sweets, elaborate costumes, parties, bonfires and fireworks. For many people this is a time of fun and excitement, especially if you have young children, but for a lot of pets and wildlife this is a particularly dangerous and distressing time.

actually create a vibration, humans aren’t as aware of this but animals can feel them and it can be terrifying for some of the more sensitive souls. Keep your pets indoors, make them a little den, a safe and comfortable place to hide. You can also turn the TV up slightly and close blinds and curtains to help take their mind off what’s going on outside. It’s a good idea to feed your pet before it gets dark and if you have a dog that needs to go out in the garden make sure you stay with them, not only to reassure them but to keep them safe. Make sure you check that gates are closed as dogs may bolt if scared and if you are opening doors ensure that your pet is securely inside and can’t dart out. If you are building a bonfire, remember to keep the wildlife in mind, don’t built on top of leaves as there may be hedgehogs or other wildlife hiding underneath them. Ideally build the bonfire just before it’s lit to ensure that there are no animals hiding inside it. It’s not just wildlife to consider as cats and other pets can sneak in there too, if the bonfire is left unsupervised at all check it again before lighting. Keep everyone safe and enjoy the seasonal celebrations. Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

Libby Williams MHAO AHdip Animal Healer & Holistic Therapist 73 keeping your pets safe this autumn pets & garden

There are several things that you can do to keep your pets safe and make this time less stressful for them. Chocolate and other Halloween treats are very yummy and it’s tempting to share them with our lovely pets especially if they are looking up at you with those adorable eyes, but this is not a good idea, chocolate is toxic to dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals. Many sweets, cakes and nut butters contain a sweetener called Xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs and cats and can cause liver failure and ultimately death. What’s most concerning is that Xylitol is being used more and more in peanut butter and other nut butters, a lot of pet parents like to use peanut butter in toys for their pets so it is imperative to always check the ingredients. There are many recipes for pet friendly treats on the internet, they can be really easy to make and use lovely healthy, natural tasty ingredients. Why not bake some special Halloween/ Bonfire treats for your gorgeous pets, you can have lots of fun making them, cutting them in to spooky shapes and coming up with some fun names for them

If we get a nice spell of weather through August and into the beginning of September the flowering season of summer bedding and perennials will continue into early autumn. The range of new varieties of tried and tested herbaceous perennials has expanded quickly over the last few years with the introduction of new foxgloves, delphiniums and Lupins alongside the newer plants of perennial Salvia, Gaura and Heuchera - they make a cost effective alternative to summer bedding. Buying perennials from spring through to autumn will give colour for many months of the year.

Once borders have been cleared of summer bedding, you can replant with winter pansies, violas, sweet williams and wallflowers. Hopefully if the weather has been moist we’ll have some of our own field grown wallflowers available from the end of September – they give excellent value for moneyflowering in the spring with the bulbs.

Hessian sacks that are available from garden centres are ideal for this purpose. Continue to pick runner beans and courgettes on a regular basis, so that they don’t become stringy. Pick any tomatoes before the first frosts and ripen on the windowsill or use for green chutney. Another pest becoming more common is woolly aphid which usually attacks fruit trees, particularly apples. As the name suggests this looks like woolly deposits on the stems of trees. Inside are the aphids. It can be controlled by spraying Provanto Fruit & Veg Bug killer onto the stems. Make sure that you follow the directions on the bottle as there are set minimum intervals before you can pick fruit. Pick early apples and pears as they become ripe. Eat the earlier varieties straight away, storing later ripening ones for later use. Cover autumn fruiting raspberries against birds. The old fruiting canes can be pruned out during the winter months as the autumn varieties fruit on new season’s growth each Cleanyear. out greenhouses before putting in overwintering plants and insulate with bubble. Check over heaters ready for the first frosts. As you bring in plants to over winter watch out for vine weevil larvae, especially on fuchsias. If you do see signs of them, drench the compost with Bugclear Vine Weevil control. Buy prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas flowering and plant them in bowls with Bulb Compost by midSeptember. Give them a drink and put in a cool, dark place, bringing gradually into the light and warmth once the shoots are approx 3cm high.

Harvest onions and potatoes now – lift up onions and allow to dry out where they’ve been growing if the weather is fine, before storing. Potatoes should be stored in a cool but frost free environment.

Once your baskets have been emptied why not re-plant for winter colour, there’s plenty to choose from – pansies, violas, polyanthus, heathers, ivies and don’t forget to add a few spring flowering bulbs for added colour. Most garden centres sell smaller sized shrubs that are suitable for tubs and baskets and can then be planted out in the garden next spring. These include gaultherias, leucothoe, skimmias and grasses.

Summer baskets and tubs should still be in their prime through September and possibly into October if we don’t get any early frosts, but as the nights draw in and the weather gets cooler, they’ll begin to fade. Continue to dead head and feed regularly to encourage a late show of colour.

When a model has been a huge success for the Company it is difficult to know how to make it better, but Kia with the Sportage have introduced a 5th generation of their top selling and probably their most popular vehicle, writes Bob Hickman.

External changes have been somewhat dramatic, look at the front, huge LED running lights, someone described them as a tiger nosed grille, it really does give presence. The rear also gets quite quirky LED lights and the whole car has a mass of angles and creases that could be a panel beaters nightmare to repair, but it does stand out, you have to make your own conclusions. The new vehicle also has a hugely updated infotainment system and an absolute plethora of extra driving aids.

kia sportage 1.6 t-gdi

My particular test car is fitted with a multi-adjustable electronically controlled driver’s seat and in addition to the fully adjustable steering wheel which anyone of any stature should be able to get comfortable.

There are numerous variants of the Kia Sportage range and the choice is rather extensive. There is a choice of petrol, diesel, mild hybrid, full hybrid, and plug in hybrid, buyers can also choose between a front or an all-wheel drive. My particular test vehicle was equipped with a 1598cc petrol engine and it was what I would describe as conventional, no hybrid, no assistance with electric motors, just a conventional internal combustion engine. The 6-speed manual gearbox was a small negative for me, 5th and 6th gears were really only of use on a motorway or dual carriageway, around town they are virtually to be forgotten.

Kia have equipped the vehicle with an awful lot of safety equipment some of which can be annoying, one particular feature for me was an warning of a vehicle travelling in front of me, if the Kia thought I was getting a little too close then the Forward Collision Avoidance Light would come on and if you didn’t react it would apply the brakes on your behalf.

The interior of the Kia was one of plenty of space both for the driver and passenger and the rear passengers shouldn’t really have too much of a problem with ample knee and headroom. The driver has the benefit of quite a huge panel in the dashboard and in the central panel in the middle of the car with Infotainment and driver’s display. Both are easy to understand, there again you customise as to what you want to see before you. I particularly like to always see a digital speeding counter displayed.

There can be little doubt that Kia with the new 5th Generation of the Sportage are continuing to be on a winning streak. The vehicle as tested had an on the road price of £30,975, it also comes with Kia’s wonderful 7-year or 100,000 miles warranty, a 12-year antiperforation warranty, a paint warranty of 5-years and it has Kia’s Roadside Assistance of 1 year, so a superb warranty package is included by Kia who were one of the pioneers and leaders of this huge increase of warranty and peace of mind for owners. 80

motoring

On the road the Kia is a very easy driving companion, because of its higher stance visibility is excellent and the power steering always seemed to have just the right amount of assistance, making low speed manoeuvrability absolute ease. On twisty roads it didn’t rock and roll too much and it was in its element on dual carriageways and motorways.

Kia suggests that the 0-60 could be achieved in 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 113mph. The CO2 g/km is sadly on the high side at 154 and the fuel consumption quoted by Kia on a combined cycle is marginally over 41mpg.

Time will tell but it does take time to invade this market - Toyota with its Lexus brand is still battling on but now the name Lexus is synonymous with that quality upmarket player Toyota, and so Hyundai have taken a somewhat brave step to introduce the Genesis range into this sector. Primarily there will be an SUV, probably the flagship, but there is also going to be saloons and estate versions, and a full EV on the horizon in the future. The question of course is the product up to the hype? I was privileged to be invited to the launch and had the opportunity to drive the all-new saloon version and also the GV70, the SUV version.

The G80 Genesis is priced on the road as £47,950, but with the various additions that have been equipped i.e., sunroof at £1,500 and a wonderful sound system at £800, add-on to the cost of the vehicle and my test vehicle was £54,280. 81 new brand of car maker

Genesis is intending to be different; you will not be able to buy a Genesis at a traditional dealer, it is all done on-line and by the web. The car is then delivered, in a custom trailer, to the owner’s home. The owner will benefit from an extensive package which is called the Genesis 5-year care. It will have a 5-year warranty, 5-year servicing, 5-year courtesy car, 5-year update on maps and the technology that is required to operate the car together with 24-hour roadside assistance. The G80 saloon really proved to be an executive car in every area. They are available as petrol or diesel and the particular test car that I was able to have a brief sojourn with was equipped with a 2.5-cylinder diesel engine producing 300bhp.

The external appearance is one of sweeping lines, with a large grille, a very long bonnet, and lots of use of chrome which I felt was an attractive package. It had a long wheelbase and this translates to wonderful amounts of space within the cabin, and the interior is without doubt one of the highlights. It was very luxurious, everywhere you looked the equipment, fittings and the materials used were all of high quality.
